or Doug, a business administration major, college was an accumulation of experiences that are setting him up to launch a business. Liberal arts courses made him a better intellectual and led to relationships with professors outside of his major. Business courses taught him about management and crafting mission statements. Leadership programs and Greek Life inspired a devotion to service and a mentoring program with other young men. And rediscovering a love of the saxophone injected creativity into all of his work,
and provided moments of respite in an otherwise jammed schedule. The next stop is Columbia Law School, where he will broaden the scope of his skills and add a legal framework to support his entrepreneurial goals. “I love wrestling with bigger questions that might not have a numerical answer,” he says. “The most important thing I’ve learned at Elon is that learning isn’t about a classroom or a particular location. It’s about the world.”

At Elon we don’t think your major defines you. In fact, we believe you’ll be more successful if
you expand your circle of interests. Elon is all about collaboration—a combination of many things to make a better whole. Team-taught classes pair professors in different disciplines to provide more inclusive views of issues. Cross-campus departments collaborate to plan conferences and celebrations. And all of the university’s 200+ student organizations were founded by students who worked together to turn their ideas into reality. Simply put, you’ll apply what you learn in the classroom to real life experiences and you’ll see why Elon sets the standard for engaged learning.

learned at Elon has blown the doors off of my expectations.” ~Doug Spencer ’16

R
yan’s time in Ethiopia was everything he expected and also completely different than anticipated. That dichotomy was what he’d hoped for. The psychology and philosophy double major spent Winter Term 2016 abroad as part of the “Ethiopia and Tanzania: An Exploration of History, Culture and the Natural World in East Africa” course. He went to museums, ate authentic food and visited towns and cities across the country. He also confronted stories of genocide and the uncertainty that comes with living in an unknown culture. Since his return, a friendship with an Ethiopian
teenager has led to an ongoing exchange of emails, and Ryan says that personal connection keeps the course alive in his mind. Cultural immersion is a hallmark of global study, but Ryan says he also finds that his on-campus courses challenge him in similar ways. “Before transferring to Elon I attended a much larger university where learning was really about memorization,” he says. “Here, the professors push you to analyze the situation and really explain your reasoning as it relates to life and society.”

K
athleen doesn’t like to be idle. An exercise science major, she chose Elon because of the opportunities to collaborate with faculty on indepth, multi-year research projects. Her interest is neuroscience research in brain stimulation, and she worked closely with her mentor, Associate Professor of Exercise Science Caroline Ketchum, to explore the field. “Instead of only writing individual papers for my classes, I was fully immersed in the research
process,” she says. “I’ve done everything from learning how to develop a meaningful question to writing a manuscript for publication in an academic journal.” In addition to her rigorous coursework and research, Kathleen has been an active volunteer since middle school. The list is long: stroke rehabilitation, Special Olympics, Best Buddies, tutoring and therapeutic horseback riding, to name a few.
