“A little rebellion now and then is a good thing”
– Thomas Jefferson
Meeting the CHALLENGE
HOW MIGHT WE IMPROVE
TRADITIONAL LEGAL EDUCATION? With a little rebellion to keep pace with the times
Meeting the CHALLENGE
Our nation was founded by people who were driven to design a more perfect union, to find a better way. Thomas Jefferson believed in the intrinsic value of “a little rebellion” and understood that “institutions must advance also to keep pace with the times.” Elon Law is leading a revolution in legal education. Our curriculum is deeply experiential, highly personal, and based on the idea that students learn best when they “learn by doing.” Our students enroll in course-connected residencies; workshop labs to introduce you to the practice of law from day one; bridgeto-practice courses; and a leadership program anchored in team-based legal problem solving for regional clients. The quality and quantity of Elon Law’s hands-on coursework for required academic credit are unparalleled in American legal education. JOIN US IN THE REVOLUTION. From its founding in 2006, Elon University School of Law has creatively addressed widely recognized shortcomings of traditional legal education by: ›P roviding more real-world experiences › Sequencing the curriculum to provide a
logical progression of learning
› Increasing rigorous skills training › Connecting student experiences to the
legal profession
› Engaging social justice issues as part
of the curriculum › Creating value by reducing the length and cost of the program In offering our innovative solutions to the critiques of traditional legal education, we thought deeply about the knowledge, skills and broader professional competencies essential for graduates to excel as modern lawyers, and then we designed the curriculum from the ground up.
Our carefully crafted sequence of courses and experiences integrates the best of traditional classroom instruction with highly experiential professional residency placements unlike any other American law school. Elon Law empowers students to gain the knowledge, skills, judgment and professionalism that are crucial in today’s world of law - and the world of law tomorrow. We do this because the law itself never stops evolving. Technological and cultural forces are constantly shaping the way it is practiced and applied. That’s why the best lawyers are those with entrepreneurial mindsets. They recognize legal issues, and identify legal solutions, to make our world a more just place for all. We also understand it is crucial to reduce tuition and position students to accelerate their careers – so Elon Law did exactly that. Students attending Elon Law will earn a law degree in less time and at lower cost, and will begin their careers with more realworld experiences that create more opportunities for success. Elon Law is providing national leadership in the innovation of legal education because we are 100 percent committed to our students’ success in a rapidly changing world. Join us. We’re different, and better, by design.

A sequence of THINKING and DOING Elon Law’s most important innovation is the redesign and strategic sequence of its curriculum, weaving practice-based learning into the entire student experience. The traditional approach to law school includes a highly structured first year, and increasingly less structure in the second and third years. Elon’s approach is more purposeful: ›› Foundation courses in legal analysis, communication, leadership and
professionalism
›› Core legal subjects taught by professors with significant practice experience ›› Emphasis on skills development in legal writing, communication
and advocacy
