It was just him, a camera, some audio equipment and the entire city of San Francisco. Now all he needed was a brilliant story idea. Randy was one of five finalists and to win it all, he had to conceive, shoot and edit a TV news story on an economic topic impacting the Bay Area. This was no moment to panic. Randy hustled into action, buffered by years spent working with Elon’s studentrun TV news show, Phoenix14News. Randy had covered presidential debates, reported live from President Obama’s inauguration, and served as an anchor and senior correspondent. The Hearst assignment was tough, but he was prepared. Randy came up with a story that focused on the fishing industry and sailed into first place. Creativity. Experience. Success.

It’s never too early to think about the rest of your life. What profession piques your interest? Where do you want to go to graduate school? How do you define success? Four years working with Elon’s award-winning professors will help you answer those questions. And after graduation you’ll join a tight-knit alumni network that connects graduates across the globe.

Luke Johnson ’07 It’s one thing to earn an “A” from your professor. It’s even better when a former U.S. Poet Laureate and Pulitzer Prize winner singles out your work. Not even a year after graduation, Luke was selected for inclusion in the "Best New Poets 2008" anthology. Since then his poems have appeared in more than 15 national literary magazines and Luke has received awards from the Academy of American Poets and the Atlantic Monthly. Remembering the Old Testament While Walking the Dog Cobwebs pearl on the hedge-top while the dog leans on the roots. This part of morning it’s just us and the old-timers taking our walks, a light frost still dusting the shadowed half of the yard, sunlight brimming over roofs newly shingled since the windstorm last month that brought down a live power line into a pile of leaves, whipping up a wildfire. Then, the whole valley smelled like a woodstove during a white winter, smoke drifting for the sky like morning fog lifting—What does it mean to be holy, to be in one place thinking of another, to hear a voice come from something burning, something alive fizzling away?—one of those mornings, the only sound came from a woodpecker hammering an oak tree. I stood still, listening, straining to hear the fire.

A campus with a conscience The Elon community is committed to creating a healthier planet, and efforts start right here. Students hop biodiesel shuttles to class and rent hybrid Zipcars for errands and weekend trips. Reclaimed storm water irrigates campus lawns, and Campus Dining serves locally grown produce when possible and has ditched trays to encourage diners to be more mindful in their food choices.
Lindner Hall, home of Elon College, the College of Arts and Sciences, was built with sustainability in mind and achieved LEED Gold certification. The building provides bike racks and showers for those who cycle to campus and offers preferred parking for low-emitting vehicles. An interactive display screen in the lobby shows real-time energy and water consumption and tracks energy created by photovoltaic panels on the roof.
