The State of California Sues Activision Blizzard Brandon Lee Ramirez Opinion Editor brandon.ramirez3017@my.riohondo.edu
T
he California Department of Fair Employment and Housing is suing games publisher Activision Blizzard after a two year investigation. The suit was filed on July 20, alleging that Activision Blizzard was violating California’s workplace protections. The suit brings to light the “frat boy” culture of the company. Women employed by Activision Blizzard were less likely to be promoted and more likely to be fired. This is accompanied by claims that men who were promoted had passed responsibilities over to their female staff in favor of playing Call of Duty. As well as pay discrepancies between men and women. Additionally, the staff at Activision Blizzard would reportedly take part in “cube crawls”. These “cube crawls” entailed the male staff drinking and going to hit on their female counterparts during work hours. Following the suit and the publicity it garnered, Activision Blizzard began to react. Former US Homeland Security advisor, now Activision executive, Fran Townsend had denied the allegations facing her company. She
faced heavy scrutiny following her statement. Similarly, an internal email from CEO Bobby Kotick gained harsh criticism, being seen as tone deaf by staff. Activision Blizzard also hired WilmerHale to fight the suit, generating concern due to claims of the firm being union busters. The staff also reacted, coming together for a walk out to protest the treatment by the company. Ubisoft staff also made a statement in solidarity with the workers of Activision Blizzard. The statement comes after Ubisoft’s own internal problems with sexual harassment. More claims followed the initial backlash against Activision Blizzard. Details regarding an alleged “Cosby Suite” came to light. As well as claims that the sexual misconduct was an open secret. With details of the alleged “constant sexual harassment” coming out, higher-ups at the company have began leaving. Most recently, the lawsuit has only increased in severity. The State Of California has updated their complaints against Activision Blizzard. Now claiming that Activision Blizzard has shredded documents relating to the investigation that should have remained available. Further, they brought

Activision Blizzard also has announced plans to change the company culture and appoint new senior executives. In a press release from Sep 13 they announced “Julie Hodges, Senior Vice President, Corporate HR and

ealth officials have been contemplating whether or not to make the Covid-19 vaccine mandatory for weeks now. Officials have given the executive order that Los Angeles County will now require the COVID vaccine for all indoor bars, nightclubs, wineries, and breweries. Both employees and customers will need to have at least one dose of the vaccine by Oct. 7, and need to be fully vaccinated by Nov. 4. Indoor events of more than 1,000 people already require vaccination. The order will now extend that requirement to outside events as well, including theme parks. Vaccination for indoor restaurants is not yet required but suggested. The purpose of this mandate is to ensure the safety of others and help reduce the spread of Covid-19. L.A. County Supervisor Hilda Solis said she agrees with the order, but is curious on how the order will be implemented. In the past, many businesses have ignored the mandate. Officials assure they will be more strict this time around. Many entertainment businesses will now require proof of vaccination as well. The L.A. Philharmonic Association, Goldenvoice which produces Coachella and Stagecoach, and the Hollywood Pantages Theatre, will all now require guests

wished to remain anonymous. When asked about how she felt about the mandate in Los Angeles county she was appalled. “I am not vaccinated and nor will I be forced to get vaccinated. It is my right to not get vaccinated and I will not let L.A. county change that” she stated. When asked what if the same mandate was ordered in Orange County she responded, “That just will not happen. If it does there will be tons of people protesting. It is our right.” I also asked a resident of L.A. county named Joseph Ayala how he felt about the mandate. Ayala’s response was, “I am fully vaccinated and I know the purpose of this mandate is to protect our society and keep as many people safe as possible.” When asked how he felt about those opposed to the vaccine Ayala answered, “Those people have turned this pandemic into a game of politics.” Ayala’s response brought up a very controversial topic. Is the vaccine mandate ethically wrong? If so, is it wrong yet understandable? Unfortunately, this pandemic has caused a huge division between us all. However, whether you agree or not, you must be vaccinated by Oct. 7 to attend outings in L.A. county. Health officials hope this urges people to go get vaccinated, and hope to see the number of vaccinated people go up greatly.

ho would’ve thought red, white, and blue can be so stunning? Make way for the celebrities who attended the biggest event in the fashion industry! After a very much long awaited time due to Covid-19, the 2021 Met Gala returns to New York sparking up a variety of ideas for this year's theme “American Independence.” Celebrities appeared in their most memorable suits and dresses on Monday, September 13th causing the public to be left stunned. The night of the Met Gala will also be the opening of Andrew Bolton’s new two part exhibition, to celebrate young unknown fashion designers and social changes that have impacted America. “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion '' will be the first part of Bolton’s exhibition and will open on September 18, 2021 at the Anna Wintour Costume Center. The biggest fashion event was set on focusing more on younger generations because of the exhibition celebrating young designers. Because of this and Covid-19, the guest list is a lot smaller than usual. Nonetheless, 2021 Met Gala was just as memorable! With the theme reflecting off America’s identity, celebrities did not disappoint showing up in bold spectacular outfits. For many celebrities and American designers, they took the chance to show what the theme means to them and how they could portray it to the world. Celebrities not only did that but, they set the bar high for the future Met Galas. From Kendall Jenner's custom Givenchy, inspired by Audrey Hepburn’s look in My Fair Lady, to Billie’s gorgeous corset gown custom made by Oscar de la Renta, celebrities did not hold back from re-creating inspired looks from their favorite old hollywood fashion looks.

Wooly Mammoths May Return to Earth Jonathon Carmona

ieroglyphics have been drawn, fossils have been found, stories have been told, but the legend of woolly mammoths may not end there as we head for the future. After having been extinct for 10,000 years, woolly mammoths could potentially walk the Earth again. Bioscience and genetics company, Colossal, has raised $15 million to fund a woolly mammoth revival project, where scientists will look to engineer a set of elephant-mammoth hybrid embryos, a dream they hope to accomplish by 2027. Co-founded by Ben Lamm, a science and tech entrepreneur, and George Church, a professor of genetics at Harvard Medical School, known for pioneering new approaches to gene editing, Colossal is looking to engineer new embryos using mammoth DNA and skin cells from Asian elephants. Asian elephants, who are also at risk of extinction, are
the closest animals related to mammoths. Scientists will take the skin cells of these elephants and reprogram them into more versatile stem cells that carry mammoth DNA. The elephant-mammoth embryos will then be carried to term in a surrogate mother or artificial womb. Researchers are hoping to have the first set of calves within six years. This tinkering could potentially have benefits on all fronts, not just for us humans but the animals facing extinction and a world begging for an ice age. Scientists hope to conserve Asian elephants by giving them traits that will help them thrive in the Arctic. They believe introducing elephant-mammoth hybrids to the Arctic tundra may help restore the habitat by knocking down trees and restoring the Arctic grasslands. Many scientists suspect that mammoths were vital for the thriving Arctic grasslands of the past, knocking down trees, digging up dirt, and fertilizing the soil all on their own. The other hand shows a

ow that preseason has come to an end, it is time for all NFL players to prepare for the big season ahead of them. The only difference between then and now is we can all be together now. As we all gather around with our families and friends to watch our teams win and lose. After a horrible year of being apart and only being able to watch from our screens to now be able to hear the roar of the crowd in person. The sound of the kickoff and all the fans cheering in unison for their team. We all deserve to be able to support and see our teams together but not without precautions and safety procedures that we all need to follow. That way we can continue to enjoy the games in person longer and not put ourselves at risk. Out of the 32 teams that played this week, you can assume that 16 had won. Yes, this is only the first week of the season but can we already see a rising star in the crowd or perhaps an underdog that no one will see coming this season? Then again isn’t that beauty in it? The expectations and excitement of a new season. Especially with all the new rookies looking to prove themselves and veterans trying to continue their success to create a legacy. Possibly even having the end goal of making it into

For the start of Week 1, the first game took place on Thursday afternoon. Then the following nine games occurred in the afternoon and four in the later evening on Sunday. Finally, one game took place on
Monday night. The team that dominated the most was the New Orlean Saints, they took a mashing lead against the Green Bay Packers with a score of 38 to 3. Then right behind them was the Philadelphia Eagles against the Atlanta Falcons with an outstanding score of 32 to 6. There were also some nail-biting, close games like the Miami Dolphins against the
New England Patriots with a tight score of 17 to 16. Also right behind them with a close score of 19 to 14 was the New York Jets coming out on top against the Carolina Panthers. Yet the game that everyone was looking forward to seeing was the Los Angeles Rams against the Chicago Bears. As Matthew Stafford faces against an unfamiliar opponent with
an unfamiliar team in his Rams debut as the new quarterback. Both teams have very strong defense so it could have gone either way. Yet the Los Angeles Rams won with a score of 34 to 14. Overall we can already see that this season has potential and it’s only Week 1. Who knows what is yet to come and like all of you, I can’t wait to find out next Thursday night.

fter nine consecutive years, the Los Angeles Dodgers with a record of 94- 54 are back in the postseason once again. Overall, this season has been one of the toughest seasons yet due to multiple Injuries and off field distractions. The Los Angeles Dodgers faced adversity straight on this season despite their record and still clinched a playoff berth while chasing down the hated San Francisco Giants with fourteen games left in the season. The Reigning World Series champs are known to have a flexible roster with players playing multiple positions with many players getting injured. They really showcased the talent they have this season with help of OF Mookie Betts , OF Chris Taylor, 1B Max Muncy, 3B Justin Turner, 2B Trea Turner, SP Julio Urias, SP Walker Buehler, and SP Max Scherzer providing relief throughout this season.
This organization always wants to contend in the postseason and they don’t care what it takes. They get players that they need at the trade deadline in July to make the team stronger and better, which they did this year once again by landing starting pitcher Max Scherzer and second baseman Trea Turner from the Washington nationals. As the season comes to an end with two weeks remaining veteran Starting Pitcher Clayton Kershaw returned this past week and now the Dodgers are in full force in all aspects of the team with their flexible roster ready for another deep postseason run in October. Since they already clinched a playoff berth with the Wild Card and all the eyes on the National West title now as every game matters the Dodgers are expected to win the division but this is the first time they are chasing down another team for 1st place in the division in order to avoid the one game Wild Card game and just advance to NLDS.

Streaming Services Hurt Movie Theaters Ryan Leon
Opinion Co-Editor
ryan.leon7365@my.riohondo.edu
A
s we continue to grapple with the never-ending COVID-19 pandemic that has upended just about everything in our lives, businesses such as movie theaters have been grappling with the fact that they have taken a huge hit in terms of sales. In March 2020, movie theaters across the country and throughout other places in the world were forced to shut down, which caused concern for many in the film industry, and no one knew for certain when theaters would open again (if at all). At the beginning of the pandemic, it was deemed unsafe by city officials to gather in large groups. So naturally, it made sense that movie theaters would have no choice but to close their doors. This was especially hard for employees because it meant they would have to find another job in an already difficult situation or file for unemployment. I was one of those employees and I chose the latter. Cinepolis in Pico Rivera, Calif. is one of the thousands of cinemas that shut down at the start of the pandemic last year. This was a very popular theater that the citizens of Pico Rivera and others living in neighboring cities attended. I remember it being packed with guests every weekend whenever a new movie came out. That all changed when the Coronavirus hit the U.S. Soon after the closure, streaming services became more popular than ever. Websites like Netflix, Hulu,
Amazon Prime Video, and Disney Plus were already huge platforms prior to the pandemic. However, their popularity soared to new heights once movies were no longer available for viewing at theaters. This popularity quickly caught the attention of other companies and thus, the age of online streaming began to expand exponentially. Now, on top of Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney Plus, other online streaming services have been established. From perhaps the biggest new addition to the online streaming world in HBO Max to other services like Paramount Plus, Peacock, YouTube TV, and more, it seems to me that online streaming services have begun to take over movie theaters as audiences’ preferred method of film bingeing. However, movie theaters have tried to regain their losses since reopening earlier this year. Since March 2021, Cinepolis has not had nearly enough guests come in to watch a movie as they did prior to the shutdown. There is no doubt that all the online streaming services out there are to blame for this lower moviegoer turnout. This is particularly noticeable because of what I have seen while working at the theater since returning. The best example that I can give is when the recent “Black Widow” movie from Marvel Studios came out in April. “Black Widow” was supposed to be the next big Marvel movie to premier in theaters until Disney decided to release the film on Disney Plus alongside them. This was

unsurprisingly a massive blow to movie theaters because they didn’t just lose money due to limited capacity, they also lost money to potential guests deciding to watch the movie at home online instead. As a result of this, other theaters including Cinepolis didn't receive as many guests as they would have liked which, in turn, hurt “Black Widow” and everyone associated with that film because of mediocre box office sales. Scarlett Johansson, the star of “Black Widow”, went as far as suing Disney for not honoring her contract and refusing to pay her owed salary earnings after premiering the film on Disney Plus. This isn’t to say that online streaming services are
completely bad because they aren’t. After all, we’re still living in a world that is currently going through a global pandemic. Yes, it is true that movie theaters are losing money because of them, but I can see why it's also a good thing to have them around. Thanks to the plethora of streaming services at our fingertips, people who aren't ready to go out and watch a movie around other people or who feel uncomfortable about that thought can now enjoy most new movies in the comfort of their own homes as soon as they become available! It’s difficult to say whether online streaming services will become a thing of the past once the world returns to anything close to the normalcy we all
remember or if they will remain a part of our movie loving lives. If I was a betting man, then I would have to go with the latter. At the end of the day, it's up to the person to choose if they still want to experience that amazing feeling of watching a grand spectacle on the big screen surrounded by others or go the more laid-back route and enjoy a film on the couch or wherever it is they watch films. Outdoor projector anyone? While streaming services may be bad business for movie theaters, they are not bad for everybody. No matter how people choose to watch films, it's a great thing to know that there are plenty of options out there for everyone to explore.

In conjunction with the COVID-19 pandemic, box office sales remained stagnant from 2015 to 2018 and saw a significant drop in sales after the pandemic as a result of the growing number of online streaming services.

Netflix’s ‘Clickbait’ Limited Series: TV Review Valeria Yanez Reporter

C
lickbait is a limited series that has reached the top 10 most viewed in the U.S. for Netflix. The series consists of eight episodes each being around forty to fifty minutes long. The show gives you a mix of a thriller and drama all in one. Clickbait is the perfect title for this series. It's thorough and clever. The limited series starts off with a normal American family who above all love each other despite their differences. Nick Brewer is a character on the show who is abducted; leaving his family with questions after a video of him goes viral online. In the video Nick is holding up a sign with a very serious confession. It becomes an internet sensation leaving the public to create theories of their own. Furthermore, the series shows how nowadays the inter-
net can be very deceitful. Nick Brewer seemed to live a double-life, the media soon found out secrets they started to pull off of Nick and his various accounts with social media. The media blew out of proportion details of what happened for the sake of views. Meanwhile, the Brewer family has to fight for Nick and prove that he is innocent; not knowing what is true and what isn’t. With every episode secrets unfold giving us a bit of truth every time. The truth always comes to light, at least we hope so. Most of all, Clickbait is about a man who is part of a horrible tragedy, whose family's mission is to find him innocent and clear his name. The series makes great points on how sowciety thinks they know someone or something based on news or posts on social media. In reality, a lot can be blown out of proportion. The internet will always be deceitful. Therefore, Clickbait on Netflix gets a 9/10.

fter more than a year of distance learning, schools K-12 are fully reopening, and students are more frustrated than ever. The cause of this; the American school system, 8 hours a day, 6 classes, 7 days a week. As of March 2020, most schools transitioned to virtual learning, a new and challenging concept for all teachers and students, transforming the meaning of school. After many years of having a teacher physically present, there was something odd/unrealistic about someone behind a screen. The option of attending class fell into the student’s hands, literally, with their laptop in front of them and the power button at their fingertips; for those who lacked motivation, it was a convenience, and for others with chaotic lives, it was an obstacle. The pandemic changed schools, it changed lives, and it also changed the way of learning. There is a lack of focus on students’ mental health in schools, and while counselors do exist, that isn’t enough. Many adolescents at
a young age find it difficult to seek help or ask for advice. This post-pandemic educational system deserves a change as well. Schools districts throughout the entire country should implement mental health campaigns and free therapy groups. Instead of leaving it to students to look for help, staff members should seek out to them. Finding motivation was difficult for all Americans during the pandemic. According to the CDC, “120,000 children lost a family member due to COVID-19”. There were other worries and priorities aside from school, including finding a way to survive physically, mentally, and emotionally. As October comes around the corner, test scores and grades are lower than ever. The NWEA projected, “Students would return in the fall with 70% of the learning gains in reading and less than 50% of the gains in math compared with a typical school year.” Students officially lost a year and a half of learning; is it possible to get it back? A student attending Los Altos High School in Hacienda
Heights, California, states, “In my Math 1 Honors class, the class average is a D+, even if it’s an honors class, that’s never happened before”. Another student said, “In my English Class, no one ever wants to participate at all.” There is a disconnection between students and their education, and while grades are plummeting, there is a significant rise in depression rates. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, “The percentage of adolescents screening positive for depressive symptoms increased from 5.0% to 6.2%”. These numbers are from students, children, and adolescents whose lives are just beginning. When issues like depression and anxiety begin to play a significant role in their lives and become more noticeable, there should be questions on what schools should be doing to help, especially because this is where the majority of their day is spent; it is their community. Students can definitely bounce back, but they cannot do it on their own.
