Rio Hondo College Scholarship Deadline

Spring 2023 semester scholarships awarded to students will be announced by the Rio Hondo College Foundation Friday, March 24. The final day to apply for is Friday, March 10. To apply for any scholarships, students first need a minimum 2.0 GPA to meet the application requirements.

Then, after filling out the application with details such as their student ID and unofficial transcripts, students need a letter of recommendation. The letter should include the recommender’s complete contact information. However, those applying for a scholarship cannot input the letter. Instead, the recommender must add the story to the application before students can submit it.

As part of the application process, students must also complete a personal essay between 300 and 900 words. The prompt for the essay is “Who Am I.” The essay should include each student’s accomplishments and their personal and academic challenges. In addition, the essay should mention why you’re attending college, what your college and career goals are, and how you hope to use the scholarship.

But students won’t have to wait long to hear a response. Between Feb. 21 and Sunday, March 19, the Rio Hondo College Foundation Matching and Review Committee will match students to whichever scholarships their application best fits and meets the requirements.

By March 24, the Rio Hondo College Foundation will inform students if they are eligible to receive any scholarships. For students still filling out the application, the Rio Hondo College Student Success and Dream Center has multiple YouTube videos about how to apply for Rio Hondo College Foundation scholarships.

Students can access the Rio Hondo College Foundation page and the student portal, AccessRio. Students can also go to the Finances tab on AccessRio, the fourth tab on the right-hand side, and scroll down to click “Apply Here For Scholarships.”

The fundraising event, A Taste of Rio–hosted by the Río Hondo College Foundation–returns June 23. Rio Hondo College Foundation scholarship applications have been open since Feb. 16.

LAFC Chops Down the Timbers

New Name, Same Home

Los Angeles FC’s home arena changed its name from Banc of California Stadium to BMO Stadium. BMO, which stands for Bank of Montreal, is a Canadian financial institution. BMO is moving into the U.S by proposing a takeover of the Californiabased Bank of the West.

The Canadian financial firm also owns the naming rights to Toronto’s FC’s home arena called BMO Field. They have also partnered up with CF Montréal, and Vancouver Whitecaps FC.

The Los Angeles Football Club defeated the Portland Timbers 3-1 on March 4. Having lost their last matchup against LAFC, the Timbers are continuing their active losing streak against the LA club. Kickoff was at 1:55 p.m., a slight delay due to LAFC celebrating their championship win of last season.

A Portland player was fouled a minute after the initial whistle. About 10 minutes into the game, the LAFC set up a dangerous counterattack. David Bingham and the Timbers’ defense put a stop to all of that commotion with successful deflections and a save.

Gaming Computer 101

@pdr.glvz

Gaming has become a keystone in everyday life and has made an impact on pop culture as a whole. Many consumers are out buying the latest XBOX, Playstation and Nintendo consoles. The PC gaming market is ever growing and reaching audiences of all ages. But why? Well like anything, a computer has many components that make it functional, and a combination of different parts produce different results. Average desktop computers aren’t meant for gaming due to their internal parts; they were built for day to day tasks such as internet browsing and tasking on Excel.

Ok so we know how a computer works, but what does any of it mean? These

by Kellyn Acosta set up Giorgio Chiellini to bag the team’s first goal of the season. Not too long after, LAFC was awarded a penalty as Timbers’ Santiago Moreno landed a foul on Christian Paredes. Carlos Vela took the penalty and placed it in the bottom right part of the net, making the score 2-0 LAFC. Before the first half of the game ended, Joe Dickerson, head referee, added nine minutes of stoppage time. While not much happened in this period, the Timbers set up an attack that led to John McCarthy making an outstretched save. Seven minutes into the second half of playing time, Vela sent a through pass to Mahala Opoku which added LAFC’s lead. LA leads 3-0.

Portland wasn’t going to go down without a fight, however. At 62’ Juan Mosquera led a charge downfield, where he placed a ball for Evander which led to the Timbers’ opening goal. They still trail 3-1.

Throughout the second half, LAFC had been making little mistakes that Portland continued to exploit. At 83’ Paredes capitalized on the rebound of another shot. Portland inches closer to LAFC as the score is 3-2.

In the four minutes of stoppage time, neither team was able to do much and the score remained the same. Because of this, LAFC stood victorious in their first game at the newly named BMO stadium.

According to ESPN, “The name change in Los Angeles has been brewing since 2020, when Banc of California backed out of its reported 15-year naming rights deal first signed in 2016.” The club and the bank didn’t mention a reason for the bank’s step back from the deal.

LAFC won its first MLS Championship last fall against Philadelphia on penalty kicks to claim the MLS title. LAFC was awarded two Supporter’s Shield titles for having the best overall regular season record out of the MLS teams.

BMO also announced a partnership deal with Angel City. LAFC’s stadium first opened their gates in April 2018. According to LAFC, LAFC’s stadium has been sold out for every MLS regularseason and playoff match since its opening in 2018.

The stadium is located next door to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in Exposition Park. The stadium is set to host soccer games and track and field events during the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028. It has also hosted rugby, boxing and numerous concerts.

parts all vary in the sense that they are interchangeable (to a degree) which brings many users to build computers which is a common hobby. Building a computer may seem like a daring task but by watching a few videos on Youtube and having some confidence, it should be a piece of cake. This is the method which many PC users choose to go since they get to pick the components which they see fit for their needs. Some people may require more storage because

they may play a lot of games.

The price point, is this expensive? Well yes and no. There is no definitive answer on how much a computer costs because could a computer cost $700? Yes. Can it cost $1,500? Yes. Can it cost $3,000? Yes. Can it cost $10,000? YES. Aside from building, the fear of not knowing a price point can shoo away a lot of people, so where do you start or how do you know?

Pictured above is a list of parts for a budget build that can be an intro to the PC gaming world.

Is The New MLB Pitch Clock a Good Idea?

Going into the 2023 season, MLB has implemented one of the most significant rule changes, possibly changing baseball as we know it.

Back in 2015 MLB announced the introduction of the pitch clock to the minor leagues. It wasn’t until several years later in September of 2022 that they announced the introduction of the rule to the major league level.

For example, in last Saturday’s Braves versus Red Sox game, batter Cal Conley experienced a rule violation. It was the bottom of the ninth inning, tied game, bases loaded, full count, and Conley was setting up for the pitch when the timer hit eight seconds. The umpire then awarded pitcher Robert Kwiatkowski strike three, ending the game at a draw. Conley then jogged down to first, thinking the pitcher violated the time clock by taking too long to deliver the pitch.

The Los Angeles Angels and Seattle Mariners also experienced the rule change when they played a complete nine-inning game in just two hours and 16 minutes. Almost a whole hour shorter than the average game.

Explanation

The new pitch timer is expected to speed up the game. Pitchers have twenty seconds to pitch the ball. The batter must be in the box before the timer displays eight seconds. A ball or strike will be added to the count depending on who violates the time.

When asking baseball fans how they felt about this new rule, they were definitely not

happy with it. Angels fan Pete Soto answered, “Personally, I don’t like the new rule at all. I think it only benefits pitchers allowing them to set the pace of the game”. Another fan who wanted to remain anonymous said “Real baseball fans appreciate the long games because they know the mental game going on too. Speeding up the game just isn’t fun and takes away the mental aspect”.

Speeding up the game just isn’t fun and takes away the mental aspect”.

- Soto Said

In baseball, pitchers are taught to set the pace and control the game. However, batters are taught not to let pitchers do that and take their time throwing pitchers out of their groove.

Reason

Some believe that MLB implemented the rule to please fans and get them to stay the whole game and spend more money. Often people show up to the games, post a few pictures, and leave early because the games last up to three hours on average. According to statista all games from 2000 to 2022 average out to be three hours and three minutes long.

MLB wants to try and stop spectators from leaving. They want them to stay for the whole game and spend more money, whether it’s on concession stands or merchandise. By shortening games fans will hopefully lose less interest and not leave games early.

Coaching and Mentoring the Future

Rene Herrera is head coach of Rio Hondo’s women’s basketball team and a RHC alumni who played basketball here. Coach Herrera led the women’s basketball team to their first playoff win in 17 years this season. Herrera wanted to work at RHC but was told to get his bachelor’s, master’s and to come back and apply.

That is exactly what Herrera did, after playing college basketball at Whittier College.

“Rio helped mold me and shaped me and helped me build relationships, and it kind of opened my eyes and gave me a sense of belonging. I got support here and that’s the only way I was able to get out. I asked for helped and people helped me. What better place to come back home,” Herrera explained why he chose to go back to RHC and work there. Herrera wanted to help put

RHC and put it on the map.

Coach Herrera worked with wanting to bring in people into RHC and has been successful.

“We coach them up and build them up,” Herrera said. One thing he has learned from coaching is that every kid is different. “I can’t talk to one kid a specific way and hope that it’s gonna be the same with the next kid. There are some kids I can yell and they’ll respond, there’s some kids I gotta pull over and encourage. Coaching has different styles just like teaching and learning.” Herrera knows when to make teaching more simpler for his players to understand and the challenges he gets put through. Herrera likes to treat his players as if they were his kids to help pave the way just like the people paved the way for him so his daughters can get help along the way.

Herrera’s life revolves around basketball , “my hobbies are basketball 24/7. My kids are very involved in basketball. I run a club Runs up in Hoop and I got 16 teams and I’m around it 24/7. I’m always helping one of the teams out developing kids.”

Herrera did mention on what he likes to do on his time off with his family, “When we do

have some free time, we like to go to family vacations, and go to Cancun, and go to Florida, Vegas just (to) relax and get away,” Herrera spoke about his family time. Herrera is all about living in the moment ever since the pandemic happened. “I try to pause every now and then, take short breaths and really focus on things that matter the most.”

Herrera has been coaching since 2006, after he stopped playing 2005 at college level.

“So I have been an assistant coach at the JC(Junior College) level at the division three level, and I have head coach for the high school level on boys and girls side for eight or nine years, then I have been head coach here(RHC)so I have been doing a little bit over 17,18 years as a head coach. It’s been a great ride,” Herrera said.

Coach Herrera talked about how RHC women’s basketball won their first playoff win in 17 years. “It is a great accomplishment. I was part of the last group who won a playoff game, I was an assistant coach. Anything can happen. I thought we played well enough to compete and we lost a couple of games towards the end in our conference and hurt us with our

numbers. Had we won those games we probably would of got a better draw. But that’s just the way it is in basketball. But to win a playoff game and for these girls to leave a mark and

Roudrunners Bounce Back From a TwoGame Losing Streak

Roadrunners Beat

Cerritos Falcons 6-4

The Roadrunners caught a break. They finally got a huge win after being on a twogame losing streak against El Camino College last month.

Thursday’s game was supposed to take place Feb. 28, but due to the rain, it was postponed until Thursday, March 2. The Roadrunners had a conference game against Cerritos College.

The Final Score of the Game was 6-4

At the top of the fifth inning, Falcons player #25, Nico Briones hit a home run to make it 3-2. During the bottom of the sixth inning, the Roadrunner, #5, Diego Flores, hit a double RBI (runs batted in). Then, #2, Aaron Gutierrez, scored to make it 4-2. And then, at the top of the seventh inning, from Cerritos College, #38, Daniel Castellanos, walked advancing, #29, Carlos Vega, to second base and, #25, Nico Briones, to third base. While #15, Andy Vega, scored to make it 4-3. Following that, #11, Miles Hughes, walked an RBI. Next, Castellanos, #38, advanced to

second base, as #29, Briones, scored. The game tied up 4-4. While at the bottom of the eighth inning, Roadrunner #5, Diego Flores, hit a double RBI so #26, Dylan Schumacher, could advance to third base, which made it easy for #8, Joshua Perez, and #23, Derek Cruz, to score. That made the final score 6-4. Speaking with Coach Mike Salazar Salazar after the game, he talked about the game against Cerritos College being postponed and how they prepare for comeback games like these. “We want to be ready to play everyday. It was a nice day today and it was all cleared up,” he said. “We prepare to be in tough games and to be ready to go. They did a good job at realizing what they were prepared for. Every game is pretty good, so just be ready for every game, just doing our job, just to prepare for a good game on Saturday, March. 4.”

Races a 1-2 Finish

Fernando Alonso Drives to his 99th Podium

Luis Martinez

@luismartineznew Lights Go Off

Max Verstappen won his first opening race, the 2023 Bahrain Grand Prix on March 5, as he and teammate Sergio (Checo) Perez took first and second place respectively. Fernando Alonso also came out in third to fill out the final podium position. Alonso also took home the “Driver of the Day” award for his various overtakes throughout

the race. This was his first podium since the 2021 Qatar Grand Prix, and some would argue his first deserved podium in almost a decade.

The Grid

Tragedy struck a few teams as there were a few early retirements this race day. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc notably had his race end early in lap 41 while sitting

comfortably in third place. McLaren struggled this race day as well, having one retirement in Oscar Piastri on his debut race and Lando Norris needing five pit stops. Norris’s pit stops were vast in length and amount. His longest pit stops were reaching times of over 11 seconds. This race was most likely just a testing session for McLaren. Although they had a collision in the fourth turn of the

race between teammates, Aston Martin found its pace and had third and sixth-place finishes.

Lance Stroll of Aston Martin raced through injury as well. His status on if he would even race was unclear until a few days before the race weekend.

The Checkered Flag

Aston Martin looks to have a competitive car and will look to challenge Red Bull for the constructor’s championship.

Ferrari and Mercedes both look to have uncertain futures for this season. Ferrari’s reliability issues are back once again. Mercedes’ W14 looks to be off pace just like last year’s car. A fresh sight to see, two Hispanic drivers took twothirds of the podium. Both Checo of Mexico and Alonso of Spain brought a certain spice to the podium that had been lacking for quite some time.
