With the gaming industry being the colossal unstoppable juggernaut in the entertainment industry, with gamers worldwide projected to spend $138 billion according to CNBC, a career in the profession seems to be more lucrative than ever.

According to Huffington Post influencers like Ninja or Shroud were reported to have made $8,000 dollars in one month. It seems the thought of being a streamer seems like more than a childhood fantasy. Many seemingly have tried to strike the hot iron of the

gaming industry as Twitch.tv reported that in 2017 had over 150,000 partnered affiliate streamers according to TechCrunch.com. Like with any career path, streaming comes with its fair share of troubled waters that can be difficult for anyone. Grinding countless

hours or dealing with social media are just some of the issues you will have to tackle if you want a prosperous career in steaming. Luis Gutierrez a former Rio Hondo graduate when asked on why he started to stream stated, “well I used to stream early on. When I first

got my Xbox One back before I went to college to try to become a journalist I would stream every now and then. And when I stream on Twitch.Tv because the Xbox One has a built-in app for it I started to gain a little bit of a following but I wasn’t consistent enough with it. Then

him choose the streaming career path. “Okay so obviously I’m a voice actor and when I was four years old, my mom found me in the back of our family car doing voices. Just being weird and making noises. So I have always been weird and enjoy making people laugh. So I would join Teamspeaks, Ventrillo communi-

ties and troll people and what not and I enjoy making people laugh. And as I got older I thought how I am going to do this and pay the bills? So how I am going to do this. And then Justin. tv came out when I was 15 and 14 and tried that for a little bit. Then things looked like that I was going to get into voice acting heavily. So I would use

that as my primary source of income. But still commit to streaming four to five hours a night.” David Love stated in regards to why he started streaming on Twitch.tv. Love spoke on the downside of streaming and stated that, for one it is not easy. “For both the growing aspect and also doing it. Like ugh I was getting crap from my sister-in-

law and she was asking how could you be tired from playing video games all day. Because you know, it is not a ‘real job’. How could that be as tiring as a real job? And I was like video games alone all day can be exhausting. Depending on the game, playing the game, interacting with chat, doing my voices all day, going back and forth all day trying to

entertain the people in game as well in the stream. This is takes way more out of you than most jobs. Especially in a game like League of Legends in high competitive setting where you have to pay attention and 24/7 there is no breaks.” Love was asked about advice he would have for anyone looking to stream and stated that, “Getting past that three viewer threshold, is insane. Just getting above five is so hard. And even when times I have 20-25 viewers even for a couple hours, it is so hard to get my average for the month above like nine. And becoming an affiliate with Twitch is super easy. But getting to partnership is where things start to get hard. That is when you know this is really your job. Because you know you are going to have to invest 40 a week minimum to whether you are streaming or not in networking yourself and stuff like that.” Love stated that it like a business, “You have to differentiate yourself from every other streamer out there. So for me not only I’m com-

peting with streamers that do voice acting in some re-

And you never stop improving. Like for me I can do over

70 characters from League, like my Draven voice for instance or my Ezreal voice I still notice the subtle differences that I can improve on.” Alexa is a full time streamer and internet personality with over 50,000 followers on her twitch channel stated that what to avoid and what affected her most when streaming was “Burnout, it’s probably the one thing that happens a lot. I take a lot of negativity as well, it definitely impacts me more than I let on. If you aren’t too aware of who you are, and what not you will let a lot of social media get to you. That’s one of the biggest things I still have issues with, I just can’t stop reading negativity. Streaming feels a lot more interactive, and you feel that you need to be your best 100% of the time, which isn’t ideal whatsoever. A lot of people make the mistake of just grinding hours for streaming when it’s about the energy you bring in those hours collectively.”

Why Would They Even Make This?

Story and Pictures By Evan Cookman

When the announcement that the Banana Splits were going to get their own R-rated horror film was revealed to the public a few weeks ago, many individuals online only had one question to ask: Why would they make this? For those unaware on what the Banana Splits are, they were a live action television show created by Hanna Barbara during the sixties. It was a variety program following the silly antics of four main characters: Fleegle, Bingo, Drooper and Snorky. Naturally, the fact that the Banana Splits of all things was getting its own movie let alone a R-rated horror film confused many people online. Many people even believed that all of this was just some elaborate joke crafted by Warner Brothers and

the SYFY network with help from Blue Ribbon Content, since they were the producers for the film. Some people even believed that this film was just some random horror film that Warner Brothers had lying around and just decided to add the Banana Splits cast for whatever reason. Regardless of many peoples beliefs, this film is real and it will be coming out this August. The film will follow a boy named Harley (played by Finlay Wojtak-Hissong from The Kindness of Strangers) and his family going to the taping of the Banana Splits television show for his birthday, but things go horribly wrong and the Banana Splits casts start murdering everyone in the studio. Now, Harley has to survive against these dangerous furry

animatronics. All of this information comes from the trailer, since we were only told that a Banana Splits movie was happening and that is was going to be a horror film. We didn’t know anything beforehand like if the Banana Splits cast were going to be the killers or even if it was going to take place in modern day. Since the trailer was released earlier this month, many questions involving the film have been answered, but even more questions have been raised thanks to the trailer. From the trailer, we can tell that it does take place in modern day since modern cellphones are used throughout the trailer. That solves the whole when does this film take place question, but it brings up the question about why there’s a Banana Splits television show in modern times and why the kids are going so crazy about it. Children in the year 2019 aren’t going to be captivated

by something like the Banana Splits. In fact, they would probably be more terrified of them given how cheap the costumes look throughout the trailer and children tend to be scared of furry children mascots due to the uncanny valley. Plus, the trailer didn’t show any blood leading to many people believing that the gore for this film will be rather minimal and cheap at best. Another question this trailer answers is that the Banana Splits are indeed the killers for this film. They are animatronics, which does somewhat explain how they could kill all these people without being stopped by security. However, this does beg the question as to why are they animatronics? Given the quick glimpses we see of their show, it seems pretty cheap and the costumes aren’t exactly well

kept. It seems like a very low budget show. So, how could they afford these advanced robots that can move, dance, sing and even drive little cars? It just seems easier to just pay some guys to wear the costumes then spend all this extra money on animatronics. No one working on the film has come forward to give their thoughts or opinions on the criticism or even the production of the film itself. Warner Brothers, the SYFY channel and Blue Ribbon Content have been very quiet about the production of this film. Despite that, the Banana Splits movie will be coming out August 14 this year and many people are excited to see the quality of this film.

Top 10 Best Summer NOW SHOWING

Story and Pictures By Evan Cookman

10. The Horror at Party Beach If you’re looking for a old goofy horror movie to watch around this time, then this film is perfect for you. This film is full of that old cheesy sixties goodness. It has wooden acting, with a love story that’s about as riveting as a two planks of wood trying to make small talk. As well as a monster design that looks straight out of an old kaiju movie. It’s not a great film, but it’s a lot of fun to watch it. It’s one of those films that’s great to watch with a bunch of friends and you making fun of it. NOW SHOWING

9. Blood Beach This is yet another film centered around a group of teenagers being terrorized by something at the beach, but this time it’s a low budget eighties movie instead of a low budget sixties movie. Despite its rather low budget, it makes up for it a bit with some half decent makeup, some decent acting from some of the cast. The use of a minimalist effect, with not showing the monster until the very end is fantastic, though that could just be chopped up to the low budget. NOW SHOWING

8. I Know What You Did Last Summer This is well known classic that’s been referenced and joked about since its release back in the late nineties. It’s the newest release on this list, but it still deserves all the admiration it gets. It’s a decent mystery horror film with characters that are pretty cliché and a twists that’s very uninspiring. Despite that, it is still a fun watch especially if you’re looking for a bit of mystery in her horror movies.

NOW SHOWING

7. Tourist Trap This 1979 film is definitely a step up from the previous entries. This film has more dynamic characters and a romance that is somewhat more developed. This film even has a unique design for the killer, known as Plasterface, with a more doll like mask covering his face. Oddly, this film is both a thriller and slasher movie with characters questioning their sanity when things start moving on their own, especially the mannequins seen throughout the film. It’s a must watch if you’re looking for a film that can combine both the elements of a slasher and a thriller together. 8

Horror Movies 6. Piranha 3DD

NOW SHOWING

Now, for a film that doesn’t even take itself remotely seriously. Piranha 3DD is a rather raunchy film with no sense of subtlety that really revels in that. The plot is something we’ve seen before. A group of teenagers are just trying to have fun during summer break and suddenly piranhas start acting everyone at the beach. A very simple story, but that’s all that’s really needed for this film. The real stars for this film goes without saying since they’re in the title of the film. This film is all about piranhas and women. This film takes pride in that and it’s kind of enjoyable seeing the great lengths the film makers will go to put both these stars in almost every scene. The film is raunchy, and has fun with that aspect. They even make fun of the title of the film , in the film itself. If you’re looking for a film that doesn’t take itself seriously and just looking for a decent B movie, this film is for you. NOW SHOWING

5. Devil’s Reject This film is not for the faint of heart. It’s rather gorey and full of sexual content, but that’s not new if you’re familiar with the director/writer, Rob Zombie’s other works. This film also has a dark sense of humor with the character Captain Spaulding. He’s the main character in all tense of purposes and he steals every scenes he’s in. He’s not exactly over the top and he doesn’t overstay his welcome. He’s technically just doing the things a clown would do during the summer. Granted it is in a more gruesome and kind of stereotypical redneck sort of way. He makes the film fun and aids a bit of light hearted moments to the darker moments of the film. Even if he’s the one causing them.

4. Sleepaway Camp This film is fondly remembered for one particular scene at the very end of the film. One of the greatest apsects of the film, is when the main character, Angela acts serious. The girl who plays her, despite being so young, manages to pull off a rather menacing aura to her. You feel her anger and aggression whenever someone gets her angry. Now the ending is something that people most likely know about. It’s been joked, referenced and parodied since the film came out, but the film has more going for it than that one shocking scene. An interesting thing about this film is that it’s one of the few horror movies not afraid to kill off children. It adds a layer of danger cause it’s not just the adults that are in trouble, it’s also the children too. Plenty of the other household horror movies don’t even have the will to do that.

3. Texas Chainsaw Massacre This film actually does take place during the summer oddly enough. This isn’t a film you would associate with summer, but it’s there. The clothes that all the characters wear are clothes you would normally wear during the summer time and the characters talk about how hot it is. The praise that this film receives is fantastic. It’s cinematography and it’s set design are unique and gives this film its own identity. Despite this film being criticized for being remembered for containing copious amounts of blood, it actually barely has any blood and doesn’t show the violence committed by Leatherface. This does manage to make the film scarier since the viewers imagination will begin to cook up some dreadful scenarios. It’s a film that paved the way for other slasher horror films like Nightmare on Elm Street and Halloween. It created one of the first big icons of the horror genre with Leatherface. Because of those facts, it’s one of the best summer horror movies you will come across.

NOW SHOWING

2. Jaws A film centered around a shark that’s terrorizing a small beach town Jaws. Given how the number of people this shark could kill, everyone is afraid to go into the water. It’s another classic horror movie with characters that you like and don’t want to see dead. Plus, it uses the minimalist effect with the shark to make the audience anticipate when the shark is going to pop up. When it does pop up, it’s a big shock to the audience.

1. Friday the 13th When someone thinks of this movie franchise, what do they think? They most likely think of some hockey mask guy killing teenagers at a summer camp. This is the perfect movie to watch during the summer. It’s centered around a summer camp, it’s full of characters that you could enjoy, with a sympathetic main villain. Most importantly, the films feel like a ghost story someone would tell to their friends around the fire at summer camp. It’s full of tall tales about some hockey mask guy that goes on adventures at a camp, New York, a boat and space. That’s what makes the Friday the 13th franchise the perfect horror movies to watch during the summer.

The Shining: How is it relevant today and how does it relate to its sequel, Doctor Sleep? Story & Pictures By Mason Tyler

Ever since its release in the U.S. on May 23, 1980, Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining positions itself as one of the most powerful, smart and faithfully outstand- ing examples of post-war American horror cinema through equal measures of inspiring devotion, im- itation and obsession. From its enthralling opening sequence to its gnomic final shot, The Shining avoids the typical bumps and jumps that are the usual stock in trade of horror, and rather forms a mood of am- biguity and paranoia, implanting seeds of doubt and uncertainty that stay longer after the final credits have rolled. Although originally critically dismissed, Kubrick’s version of The Shining is now viewed as a classic. And with

its long-awaited sequel, Doctor Sleep, coming to theaters on November 8, it is time that I explain why this movie is relevant today. Like Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo, Kubrick’s film did not find favour to its original release, with

numerous in the extensive critical community sniffly closing that ‘a silly ghost story’ was beneath the talents of the director. This was echoed in The Shining becoming the only one of Kubrick’s post 1960s films that did not receive a single Oscar or Golden Globe nomination in any category.

As a matter of fact, The Shining’s most note- worthy piece of modern-day recognition was to earn the filmmaker a nomination for Worst Director at the initial Golden Raspberry Awards in 1981. This was a long wa from Kubrick’s specified purpose when he threw himself into the project back in the late 70s after the commercial and critical failure of Barry Lyndon, Kubrick’s costume drama. Appealing his interest in making the movie was fired by reading the galleys of the novel and his own captivation with the idea of ESP, Kubrick was also mindful of the commercial advantages that horror presented. The conventional success of films like Rosemary’s Baby, The Exorcist and The Omen had shown that the horror genre was docile to a more grounded 11

and particular style of filmmaking, while it was certainly not a bad idea to drawback oneself to the rising star that was Stephen King. A complete admirer of Friedkin and Polanski’s films, Kubrick was also deeply influenced by Eraserhead, David Lynch’s 1977 debut feature. An intensely surreal portrait of urban isolation and familial dysfunction, Lynch’s Eraserhead, with its striking use of sound and haunting camera moves, made a big impression on Kubrick so much that he screened Lynch’s film for cast and crew to connect the mood he was trying to achieve with The Shining. The key to establishing said mood was Kubrick and production designer Roy Walker’s construction of the Overlook Hotel’s interior at the EMI Elstree Studios in Borehamwood.

Magnificently lit by director of photography John Alcott, the sets created an immense and continuous world that seems to be perpetually bathed in bright, white light. This made it perfect since there are no dark corners in the hotel, no obvious places to hide and no oldstyle gothic horror trappings to fall back on. Also assisting this disquieting sense of space and size was the film’s groundbreaking use of Steadicam. One of the first movies to use this technique, the floating, intangible camerawork was initially planned to only make up a small portion of the film, but its use grew considerably during the almost year-long production. Through typical Kubrick fashion, the director worked carefully with Steadicam inventor Garrett Brown, and together they

created a new ‘low mode’ bracket for the camera. This allowed Kubrick to shoot much closer to the floor than had previously possibly. Several of the film’s signature sequences ended up being filmed using this precise set-up. This includes Danny’s iconic race around the Overlook’s corridors on his tricycle. As was typical in any Kubrick film, the shoot itself was difficult and tense, particularly with the director famously clashing with leading lady Shelley Duvall over her more improvisational method to acting. The pressure became so bad that Duvall fell ill for months while her hair started to fall out due to the stress of working with the director. Relations were equally tense with the star of the movie Jack Nicholson, who would also cross swords with

the “perfectionist director” over his tendency for dozens of takes. Irritating Nicholson further was Kubrick’s routine of lighting scenes with the lead actors instead of stand-ins, demanding him to be on set for far longer than was necessary, while the continuously evolving script meant that the cast had little time to learn their lines. However, Kubrick’s problems with his creative partners weren’t just limited to onscreen collaborators. One of the most famously tense relationships was with King himself ever since Kubrick rejected King’s initial screenplay adaptation while replacing him on the proj- ect with novelist Diane Johnson. In retaliation, King was famously indifferent to Kubrick’s casting of Nicholson as struggling writer Jack Torrance(King

originally wanted Richard Drey- fuss in the role). This antagonism continued long after the film’s release even after King’s own, less than successful TV remake which was based on his novel. Regardless, Kubrick’s film adaptation has influenced other filmmakers while its famous lines (“Redrum” and “Here’s Johnny!”) have been routinely parodied, homaged and sampled by all comers. And with the upcoming, long-awaited sequel, Doctor Sleep, coming to theaters this November, we get a sense from the trailer that director Mike Flanagan is providing the same element from Kubrick. That of isolationism. That being said, it is no secret that The Shining is, and will remain, the scariest and influential horror film of all time.

My objective for my artwork is to capture the concept that dimensional universes exist. I am very attracted by the potential of what our subconscious can provide to our consciousness, the unconscious can provide to our consciousness, the unconscious and concealed is too raw to not want to reveal. Most of my artwork centralizes to the idea of the unknown, which unravels to the direction of death, dimensional worlds, and the unlimited potential that our subconscious provides for ourselves.

REVERSE FLASH ORIGINS SPOTLIGHT FEATURING: COLIN BASS Story and Photos By: Jake Laurell The Reverse Flash; the hit fan series that premiered a year ago on Nerdbot’s Youtube,is now premiering its second season. Nerdbot is a media company that focuses on the “nerd” side of culture like comic books, video games, anime and more. With the second season now fully underway, The Reverse Flash series shows no sign of slowing down, as its success was kickstarted with a hefty 65k viewership. Star and writer of the show, Colin Bass ,gave his thoughts about the production overall, and where the direction of the show could be headed narratively! “We did a quick Reverse Flash short back in 2016 and while researching the character, I realized that there wasn’t a good reason for Eobard to hate

Barry so much. So I thought it would be interesting if we did kind of an Anakin Skywalker/ Lex Luthor take on the story. I love the idea of Eobard trying to be good at first and then slowly

descend into the darkness. All with glimpses of hope mixed into the story,” Bass stated on his inspirations of the origins of the show. Bass spoke a little about the lengthy process of what it takes to operate a

fan made show of this large of a production. For him personally, “it is very challenging. I really have to write outside the box. I write around

our limitations and then we do our best to keep it growing and evolving with each episode. Luckily we have some awesome people that supply their own

costumes/props and NerdBot has been a huge help with supplying the necessary equipment. It’s a huge team effort. So then once I finish my rough draft, I send it to our producer and our di-

rector for approval. Sometimes I dream too big so they have to tell me what we can and can’t do. Or they might not like certain dialogue lines, etc. Then after I get the

script approved, we schedule a weekend, film the whole weekend, then it goes to Sean for editing. Then Sean sends the rough draft to Golden for the VFX and then we have Jake score it! Then we release it. It’s quite the process.” Bass thought that, what made the Reverse Flash different from other fan made shows was ... “I’d like to say depth. Eobard was always this bad ass one dimensional character to me. With RFO, you can see he’s trying to do the right thing but he’s just going about it the wrong way. Lots of misunderstandings and loss has lead to Eobard becoming more and more evil, but at the end of the day…he still loves Flash and wants to be a hero like him. He’s just really bad at it.”
