CNN Sues The W hite House Over The Banning of Acosta ANAMARIA APARICIO Reporter

CNN filed a lawsuit against The White House over the recent suspension of Jim Acosta’s press pass. The lawsuit alleged that Acosta and CNN’s First and Fifth Amendment were being violated, but as of recent, their lawsuit has been dropped according to the networks communication team and Acosta has restored his press pass. On Friday November 16, 2018, federal judge Timothy J. Kelly ruled that CNN correspondent Jim Acosta can keep his White House press pass. As of most recent, Monday November 19, 2018, both parties dropped their efforts on ruling against each other. According to CNBC, White House representative Sandra Huckabee Sanders stated to reporters, “This afternoon we have notified Jim Acosta and CNN that his hard pass has been restored,We have also notified him of certain rules that will govern White House press conferences going forward.” These new rules are, “A journalist called upon to ask a question will ask a single question and then will yield the floor to other journalists. At the discretion of the President or other White House official taking questions, a follow-up question or questions may be permitted; and where a follow up has been allowed and asked, the questioner will then yield the
floor.“Yielding the floor” includes, when applicable, physically surrendering the microphone to White House staff for use by the next questioner.Failure to abide by any of rules 1-3 may result in suspension or revocation of the journalist’s hard pass.” This began when Trump called on Acosta

get away with this.” Murad Saakyan, a Journalism Professor at Rio Hondo, stated that, “Trump can’t eliminate freedom of the press but he can evoke violence during one of this rallies which he does frequently. Calling journalists ‘enemies of the people’ is what is causing Americans to seek news from sketchy websites because according to the President of the United States, we can’t trust what we hear on CNN or MSNBC. “ CNN had received support from more than a dozen news outlets. From the Associated Press to USA Today, The Washington Post, Politico, and Fox News. This isn’t the first time something like this happens. Saakyan also stated, “This administration has clearly decided to pick and choose who gets to be labeled ‘real news’ and which gets to be labeled ‘fake news.’ There was a photograph taken at a Trump rally where one of his supporters is wearing a shirt that gives instructions on how to hang a journalist. It’s a crazy time to be a journalist right now. But this isn’t new. Richard Nixon tried to revoke The Washington Post from getting into the White House. This was because Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein blew the Watergate scandal wide open in 1972. Trump is trying to ban one journalist, Nixon tried to stop an entire publication.”

Rio Hondo Board of Trustees Say Goodbye to Mary Ann Pacheco and Madeline Shapiro
BRAYAN ALTAMIRANO/EPM Board members Diana Laureano, Vicky Santana, Mary Ann Pachecho, School President Teresa Dreyfuss, and board members Norma Edith Garcia and Gary Mendez pose for a picture during Shapiro’s and Pacheco’s last board meeting.

After losing their bid for re-election Board of Trustee President Madeline Shapiro (Area 5) and Trustee Member Mary Ann Pacheco (Area 1) attended their last board meeting Nov. 14th in the boardroom. Newcomers Rosaelva Lomeli, who is replacing Mary Ann Pacheco, and Oscar Valladares, who is replacing Madeline Shapiro, will be sworn in Dec. 12th. It was an evening of heartfelt goodbyes as the two now former trustees received commendations and certificates for their lifetime service to Rio Hondo College.
“Some of us are less concerned with the common good and more concerned with a self serving agenda and those so inclined seem to pursue their agendas relentlessly to the detriment of all.” - Madeline Shapiro Shapiro was a former educator in East Whittier City School District for over 24 years before becoming a trustee in 2009. Pacheco was a former full-time English professor at Rio Hondo College for 37 years before she was elected to the board
in 2011. The offices of Majority Leader Ian Calderon sent Ruby Calderon to present certificates for trustee Shapiro and trustee Pacheco. “Thank you for your outstanding and dedicated service to the students of Rio Hondo College. Your efforts were truly invaluable and will benefit our community for generations on behalf of the residents of the 57th District,” said Ruby. Mayor of South El Monte Gloria Olmos and her mayor Pro Tem Angel Richards were also in attendance to give their respects to trustees Shapiro and Pacheco. “I want to thank you for all your hard work, on behalf of the city of South El Monte, myself and mayor Pro Tem and the council, for your commitment to teaching and education and for serving the students…You left a legacy behind of powerful women following in your footsteps… God bless you on your future endeavors,” said Mayor Olmos to Shapiro. Mayor Olmos couldn’t hold back her emotions as she presented Pacheco with her certificate from the city of South El Monte, stating that “Mary Ann, you’ve been a pillar in our community for many, many years but have served as a board member tremendously…for your hard work and dedication to education we want to thank you,” continued Mayor Olmos, “I remember thinking ‘when I grow up I want to be like her.’ You have energy that is amazing and you have served your community extremely well. Your [successor’s] going to have big shoes to fill, I reminded her of that coming in. I said to her ‘Now that you got there you’re going to
have some big shoes to fill,’ because you [Mary Ann] are everywhere.” Mayor Pro Tem Richards also praised Pacheco’s legacy of advocating for students from South El Monte and the district as a whole. The offices of some of California’s Democratic leaders sent commendations and certificates for both Shapiro and Pacheco. From Senator Dianne Feinstein to Congresswoman Linda Sanchez and assemblymembers Cristina Garcia, Ed Chau, and Blanca Rubio, as well as the mayor of Whittier Joe Venatieri. “Trustee Shapiro was here when I was first elected...Thank you for your mentorship and support. A lot of the initiatives that we have here at Rio Hondo College, the fact that we are student centered came from the heart of the board of trustees and in that way we have no differences amongst us. We all came from the same place. Madeline, thank you for your service, you will both be missed. It’s kind of ironic that now that you’re retired you have all this time to be our second ambassadors your time on the board is also coming to an end,” said board member Vicky Santana. “Mary Ann and Madeline, I just want to thank you both for bringing such heart, some passion and compassion, civility and professionalism to this board. I’m really thankful that together through- we went through some difficult times. I think Vicky put it well, we were always focused on students and what’s best for the college. And even though we disagreed on details we always reached the same conclusion. I just want to thank you for that,”
said board member Norma Edith Garcia, “This is a legacy, also, of educators who have committed their entire life to service, to students and to the community.” Rio Hondo President Teresa Dreyfuss also shared words about these two women, “I have worked with Madeline for the past nine years and with Mary Ann for the past five years as a board member...including during negotiations on opposite sides. We worked hard as a team and they work so hard for the students and for the success of students...Thank you for your work to the college. I know your heart, both of you, are for student success. We will miss you tremendously.” Shapiro took a moment to speak to the board and that she had been advised to talk about her tenure here and accomplishments, but admitted she felt uncomfortable doing so. Instead, she decided to speak about what she has learned in her time as a board member. “First and foremost I have learned that governing for someone like me,” said Shapiro, “from the beginning I’ve always wanted to do what is best for the college and have endeavoured to put students first and treat employees and colleagues with the respect they deserve. The difficulty in pursuing this course in governing arises from two sources. The first is the varying perspectives in constituents...the deeper problem to be dealt with has to do with the nature of human beings. Some of us are less concerned with the common good and more concerned with a self serving agenda and those so inclined seem pursue those agendas relentlessly to the detriment of all. It is not difficult task to delude oneself into thinking that ‘if something is good for me it is good period.’ People in any sort of leadership position with this self serving, non-reflecting mindset usually do great harm when remained unchecked. And I’ve learned that when you check such people you become their enemy and are treated accordingly. I accept that. Standing up to bullies has been the core of my work in my role as a teacher, union leader, and as a trustee. Sometimes the bullies win temporarily.” Shapiro went on to thank the students and employees that spoke to her “honestly about their concerns” and trusted her enough to continuously stand by her
when they disagreed with her. She also thanked President Dreyfuss’ creativity in solving “very difficult problems.” “I’m very emotional right now,” admitted Pacheco when she stood before the board, “thank you so much...I have now served on the board of trustees for five years and have the opportunity to work with some outstanding and truly dedicated board members...For me in whatever role I was engaged it was always about the people. They were and are Rio Hondo College...I am grateful for the
“I understand that during the course of the election some staff members stated that they hated me. It saddens me profoundly. There is much too much hatred in the world today. It mustn’t find a place at Rio Hondo College.” - Mary Ann Pachecho experiences I have, the skills I was able to develop and the perspective I was able to maintain...I have always tried to do my best to whatever I have committed to...I think I was a good teacher, focusing not on the subject matter as on the students and their learning I think I was a good union leader, advocating for both faculty and students and for a better future for both. I think I was a good trustee, working hard to promote the college and to build community partnerships. I gave all that I could for the college, the students, and the communities they come from...I understand that during the course of the election some staff members stated that they hated me. It saddens me profoundly. There is much too much hatred in the world today. It musn’t find a place at Rio Hondo College. I hope that the energy required to hate is used for better ends. Transformed and directed towards other most positive things. I don’t hate anyone and I wish only the very best for everyone at Rio Hondo College.”

A Veteran’s Day ceremony took place Tuesday, November 13 in Rio Hondo’s lower quad. Past and present Rio student and staff veterans from were honored during the celebration. The college campus is closed on the actual Veteran’s Day date every year, but that doesn’t stop Rio Hondo from recognizing its veterans. The college held a ceremony the following day, just as they did a year ago. This year, Rio specially honored Yoshio Nakamura, a World War II veteran who also taught at Rio Hondo after his time in the service. Nakamura had the chance to speak about his life at the ceremony. Nakamura, a Japanese man was in a tough position when he was a El Monte High School student. The Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor during the time, and Nakamura was in a jam, a Japanese-American who was frowned upon by other Americans on a day-today basis. “Adult American citizens of Japanese ancestry were soon classified as enemy

aliens,” Nakamura said. “Well rumors about us were repeated... lies, actually repeated as news by commentators, press and political figures, we were painted with the same ugly brush describing the enemy.” The attack on Pearl Harbor is what pushed Nakamura to join the U.S. service. He went on to earn a French Legion of Honour Medal, Good Conduct Medal and a Congressional Gold Medal, the highest honor a U.S. citizen can receive. While not every Rio Hondo veteran had the chance to speak, a “Wall of Courage” was up at the Veteran’s Day event. The wall featured photos of Rio’s veterans, including staff member Nakamura. Nakamura ended his speech with a quote he heard from Captain Ronald Reagan during a burial ceremony for World War II heroes. “And so I quote,” Nakamura said, “‘The blood that has sunk into the sand is all one color. America stands unique in the world: the only country not founded on race, but in a way an ideal. Not in spite of, but because of our polyglot background, we have had all the strength in the world. That is the American way.’”

Amazon Working with ICE Agents RAMON ALVARADO Science & Tech Editor
ramon.alvarado7328@my.riohondo.edu
An open letter had been sent out by Amazon employees calling out Chief Executive Jeffrey P. Bezos on their sale contracts with ICE for AWS Rekognition, or powerful facial recognition, as described in the letter. This letter is asking for Bezo to cut all ties with the U.S. agency and stop all sales of any facial recognition technologies to law-enforcement agencies. Employees are protesting President Trump’s administration, recently halted, policy of separating families at the U.S.-Mexico border. Workers at Amazon received the news from the American Civil Liberties Union or ACLU, which exposes Amazon of offering product that “Can be readily used to violate civil liberties and civil rights.” Product such as, Rekognition, which has the ability to be to able to analyze and recognize over a hundred people in one picture, all in real time. “We don’t have to wait to find out how these technologies will be used. We already know that in the midst of historic militarization of police, renewed targeting of Black activists, and the growth of a federal deportation force currently engaged in human rights abuses — this will be another powerful tool for the surveillance state, and ultimately serve to harm the most marginalized.” Said in the letter.
PHOTO ILLUSTRATION BY RAMON ALVARADO Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents have been busy since President Donald Trump has taken office. They are now working with corporate giant Amazon to track down illegal citizens.
This past summer Amazon met with ICE in Silicon Valley to present its facial-recognition, powered by AI. In an official letter written by Amazon they wrote: “We are ready and willing to support the vital (Homeland Security Investigations) mission.” Amazon also list those that have already invested in Rekognition, and among those are Orlando, Florida, and the Washington County Sheriff’s Department in Oregon. Both of which have already built a hefty database of mugshots with up to 300,000, all linked up to Rekognition, since 2017. Employees also demanded in the letter that Amazon needs to stop providing infrastructure to Plantir, a Silicon Valley database firm. According to the letter, this database helps ICE power its detention and deportation programs. “In the face of this immoral U.S. policy, and the US’s increasingly inhumane treatment of refugees and immigrants beyond this specific policy, we are deeply concerned that Amazon is implicated, providing infrastructure and services that enable ICE and DHS.” stated the letter. Amazon workers have been working with shareholders, civil rights groups and even concerned consumers to shed more light on the company’s doings. The Amazon CEO, Bezos has yet to release a statement addressing the problem that concerns his company.
Advancing CCTV Could Help Track People Down VINCENT FRANCO Photo Editor

Technology is growing fast. There are tons of cameras that are being made with little protection. Such as webcams, which are connecting families together from different parts of the world, in home security cameras, as well as store security cameras. Most of the time the cameras are based by WiFi and can be viewed on any electronic device such as phone, tablet or even computers. They’re easily accessed and there’s no way to tell if someone has hacked into the camera. Shodan, a website that claims to be the world’s first search engine for internet-connected devices allows
users to see which of their devices are connected to the Internet, see it’s location, and who is using it. Since its creation in 2009, the site quickly exposed how vulnerable a number of so-called Internet of things devices were to hacking. Shodan now has a dedicated section that allows users to browse through unsecured webcams to gain a shocking amount of access into people’s private lives. It doesn’t require much technical know-how; users just need to create an account to get limited access into people’s webcams. Those willing to pay can get unlimited access. With time progress and more camera are being made with little to no protection, making it easier for people to access. As technology
advances, people will be able to find someone in a surveillance video could soon be as easy as Googling them. Such as descriptions of a people of interest, as well as suspect or a missing person, are normally given in terms of their height, gender or clothing. Shodan’s been used to find webcams with security so low that you only needed to type an IP address into your browser to peer into people’s homes, security offices, hospital operating rooms, child care centers. After finding a vulnerability in a common piece of building software, Cylance security researcher Billy Rios used Shodan, in conjunction with another tool, to find banks, apartment buildings, convention centers and even Google’s headquarters in
Australia, had security, lights and heating and cooling systems online that could be controlled by a hacker. “There are 2,000 facilities on the Internet right now that if someone guesses the IP address, they can take over the buildings,” says Rios. “Everything is going on the Internet whether you want it or not,” says Matherly who is a university’s supercomputer center. There are ways to prevent from random people to searching and hacking into the security camera which are to do research on the product, make sure to have a secure password and to change it every two months as technology expand be sure to be a step ahead to protect your family.

Disney Pushes Avengers: Infinity War For an Oscar DANIELLE ANZURES Reporter

For a little over a month, it’s been known that Black Panther was Disney/Marvel’s main hope for the 2019 Oscars. And while Black Panther is still on Disney’s main hope for an Oscar nomination, it seems Infinity War will be joining the competition. With Black Panther having 16 potential Oscar categories, Infinity War’s 11 wanted categories is far more than originally wanted. In fact, it’s 10 more than originally pushed for. Disney was only pushing to get a nomination for Infinity War for the Best Visual Effects category according to IGN. The categories now include: Best Director: Anthony and Joe Russo Best Adapted Screenplay: Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely
Best Film Editing: Jeffrey Ford, ACE, Matthew Schmidt Best Cinematography: Trent Opaloch Best Production Design: Charles Wood - Set Decorator: Leslie A. Pope Best Costume Design: Judianna Makovsky Best Makeup & Hairstyling: Janine Thompson, John Blake, Brian Sipe
Deleeuw, Kelly Port, Russell Earl, Dan Sudick But don’t think Disney’s Marvel movies are where their hands in the cookie jar end pertaining to the Oscars. Also being pushed for Oscar nominations are Incredibles II, Ralph Breaks the Internet, Mary Poppins Returns and the animated short Bao. Fans and audiences alike will have to wait until January 22 to see if any of these movies make the nomination list.

Action heavy films or those with numerous shots dealing with CGI are mostly awarded in the technical categories such as Best Visual Effects, Best Production Design, and Best Sound Mixing. Disney and Marvel Studios wish to break the mold and are attempting to chase the more prestigious awards next year with them wanting the Russo Brothers as Best Directors. This push in the Oscars could signal a different time in Hollywood for comic book films being acknowledged for more than just being viewed as “popcorn movies.”

Chucky Keeps His Name in “Child’s Play” Reboot DANIELLE ANZURES Reporter
danielle.anzures8473@my.riohondo.edu
IMAGE VIA IMDB The reboot will apparently focus on the dolls AI going on the fritz rather than being possesed by a nototious serial killer as in the original 1988 film.
There hasn’t been a shortage of Child’s Play movies for a while. Since its original release in 1988, the killer doll has starred in seven movies total with the most recent being released in 2017. But for the first time, Child’s Play is joining the slasher film rank and is getting a remake. A few changes have already been made with the little information given, including a change for the doll’s brand. In the original, Chucky is a toy doll called a “Good Guy” doll. For the 2019 remake, the name seems to have been switched to the name “Buddi” as seen in a promotional image on the movie’s official Twitter account. The name may have some connection to the male
doll from the 80s called “My Buddy.” This doll was rumored to the inspiration behind Chucky’s original design. And with the name change, it seems the inspiration is going further than before. Of course with this change, fans fear the iconic redheaded killer doll would lose his name as well. However, those fears can be put to rest. Chucky’s name is here to stay according to bloody-disgusting.com. It is also being reported that the original voice actor for Chucky in all past movies, Brad Dourif, will not return for this remake. Also not returning to the project is the creator of the Child’s Play franchise Don Mancini and his producer partner David Kirschner. Mancini has had a hand in all past Chucky movies, but both he and his partner declined
roles as executive producers on the project. According to Entertainment Weekly, the new film would “muddy” the franchise. Joining the project is Seth Grahame-Smith, a producer on the film It, along with his producing partner David Katzenberg. Aubrey Plaza and Gabriel Bateman will be taking on the roles of mother and son. The movie will come from the MGM/Orion Pictures company. The writer for the project is Tyler Burton Smith and directer Norwegian filmmaker Lars Klevberg. As for who will take over the iconic role of Chucky, we’ll have to wait and see. The Child’s Play remake hits theaters June 21, 2019.
MTV Reviving Spring Break For 2019
IMAGE VIA PINTEREST Spring break on MTVs slate of programming was highly successful in its time back in the 90s and heading into the 2000s. A stage being surrounded by younger music lovers in the vacinity of a pool is an image that gravitated to audiences when Spring Break would air. Now with their attempt to provide more suitable shows, MTV will showcase younger participaters giving back to their communities.
DANIELLE ANZURES Reporter

As 2019 approaches, MTV is planning to breathe life back into Spring Break. This new incarnation of the once popular program will take place and air March 19 through the 21 at the Grand Oasis Hotel in Cancún, Mexico.
While the event will still have its common celebrity guests and music performances, things will be switched up and include alternative events showing young activists who use their break to give back to the community. The news broke out right after MTV’s takeover of the SnowGlobe Music Festival
and is a big part of MTV’s plans to expand it’s live events businesses and “grow beyond cable,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. The news of this revival is not surprising as it follows in the heels of many other reboots of MTV’s classic era shows including; Jersey Shore, TRL, The Real World, The Hills, and Cribs.
Spring Break got its start in 1986 and continued to air on MTV until 2005. After that, it was moved to MTVU where is stayed until its end in 2014. The show has been filmed everywhere including the Caribbean and around South America. Pink and Lil Wayne have been featured artists on the show and stars like Jimmy
Fallon and Drew Barrymore have been included on the show. Under Chris McCarthy, who is the network president, MTV has stepped away from their scripted content and has gone back to its beginnings that made the network a success when it originally launched in the 80s.

A Black Friday 2018 Survival Guide BETSY SEGURA Reporter
betsy.segura4835@my.riohondo.edu
Thanksgiving is around the corner and it’s time to be thankful for what we have. But the day after is the best part, which is Black Friday! How do we survive the dreadful yet rewarding night? Heather Hebert from Know News has a couple of tips for us. Read the papers Thanksgiving papers will be released on Wednesday with lots of coupons, sales, and deals listed from several stores. Take all that you can and look through them while the turkey is in the oven during Thanksgiving. Make an agenda Black Friday sales can get pretty crazy, make sure you choose the best players for your shopping team! They must withstand the long lines, the urge to fight over an item and overall, be patient. Dress for the event You’ll want to avoid layers in case your plan is to try on clothes. You’ll also need to avoid it to have better mobility. Remember to pack light
and let go of unnecessary items when you could be carrying the ones that are on sale. Stick to your budget If you’ve created an agenda, then you should have calculated how much money you’ll be using. Don’t take cash. Make sure it’s in your cards and guard them with your life. Black Friday shoppers are perfect victims for pickpockets. Prioritize department stores You can stop by Walmart any time you’d like, but if you really want that new flat screen TV, you’ll head over to Best Buy first. Recharge As odd as this one sounds, it’s important for you to take a break and recharge your body and mind before returning to the insanity. You can sit in the car parking lot with some of your treasures or eat Thanksgiving leftovers while you discuss the weird things that have happened that night. Power naps are encouraged, too! Always check what you purchase You don’t want to end up with two left shoes or the completely wrong size simply because you were in a rush!
This goes for clothes as well. Clothes are often mistreated and you should make sure it isn’t damaged before purchasing it. Don’t take kids! This one comes from me, but it’s also a given. We’ve seen how violent people can get over material objects on television. They’re like zombies after a meal, please don’t take any kids into this violent environment. Risk vs. Reward Black Friday shoppers have been tased, peppersprayed, arrested, killed, even trampled under crowds. Your life is not worth a $2 dish towel, nobody’s life is. Think very carefully about the items you’re purchasing. Do you need them? Or do you want them? Black Friday shopping can be very dangerous, but if you’re still stuck on the idea that you should shop, try Cyber Monday. There are early sales that begin on Thanksgiving day. You can stick the turkey in the oven while shopping online rather than risking your life the same night. Good luck to all and may the odds be in your favor.

A new study conducted at San Diego State University, published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior, looked at over 26,000 Americans sexual behaviors dating back to 1989. What they found first was that married couples or couples living together had sex 16 fewer times per year in 2010-2014 compared to 2000-2004. Overall, Americans have
had sex 9 times fewer per year in 2010-2014 compared to 1995-1999. Lead author of the study and Psychology Professor at San Diego State Jean M. Twenge, explains in his book called Generation Me, that it’s Millennials that are having the least amount of sex when compared to others. “Despite their reputation for hooking up, Millennials and the generation after them (known as iGen or Generation Z) are actually having sex less often than their parents and grandparents did when they were young,” says Twenge. “That’s partially because fewer iGen’ers and Millennials have steady
partners.” What this means is unless you’re involved in a serious relationship chances are you’re not getting any action. The Atlantic’s piece called “Why Are Young People Having So Little Sex?” explains that college pressure and the fact of being too busy is affecting young adults sex lives. Millennials also seem to be insecure in their own skin which is holding them back from having sex. Jonah Disend, founder of the branding consultancy Redscout says to Bloomberg, “Millennials don’t like to get naked. If you go to the gym now, everyone under 30 will

iGen’ers, but everyone’s collectively going through some type of dry spell or doing other things they find fullfilling and that’s okay.
Tips on Skin Types and Foundation ARLINE CHAIDEZ Reporter

Knowing your skin type will help you determine what products to use and what products to avoid. Here are the 5 common skin types: • Normal • Oily • Dry • Combination • Sensitive Normal skin type has good circulation and there will not be any trace of sebum(oil) on the tissue. Normal skin is soft, with a smooth even skin tone. You may use any products on this skin type. Oily skin is shiny, thick and dull colored. Often skin has coarse pores and pimples and some blemished. It is prone to blackheads. What to use: oil-free primers or mattifiers, long-lasting matte foundations.
Dry skin can flake, crack, peel or become itchy, irritated or inflamed. By maintaining dry skin, gently apply a rich moisturizer, serums and hydrating mist. Avoid any setting powders, matte foundation, or oil-free products. Combination Skin is having oily and dry skin in certain areas of your face. Typically oily on the forehead, nose, and chin and dry on cheeks. You want to prep the t-zone as you would for oily skin and cheeks as dry skin. So treat each as two skin types. Sensitive skin is a condition in which the skin is prone to itching and irritation when using certain beauty products. Avoid any scented products. Finding a suitable shade for your skin color can be very difficult. To find the perfect match you must first find your undertone. There are three

lean toward a yellow tone. If you have neutral undertones, your skin will have a pink undertone. The plus side of buying
foundation is you can always go home and try it out. If it doesn’t work out you can always return it with your money back guarantee.

Aside from Korea’s strict policies, the Nightlife in South Korea is remarkably mesmorizing.
Korea is a wonderful place to visit for its unique and delicious food to its beautiful scenery. Like any country, it has its rules. Coming from Los Angeles, it may be hard to believe that in Korea it is illegal for vendors to sell on the streets. Although It is common to find a little food or clothing stand. Some sellers tend to be elderly folk and law officers can be understanding and passive. There are certain areas where it is strictly prohibited to sell any kind of product. For example, the metro station. In these stands, you
can find things from $1 to $6 like jeans, hoodies, glasses, and even shoes. These products are not the best quality but people do shop at these stands. If someone is caught drinking or smoking in a public area, there is a fine of 100,000 KRW which is equivalent to $90 in the U.S. A majority of tourists are unaware of this policy. In some cases, They’re let off with a warning. Unfortunately, it’s illegal to gamble in Korea. The only legal casino located for residents is in a remote area called Gangwon Land. Luckily, it is legal for tourists to gamble. Children under the age of 16 are not allowed to play
video games from 12 p.m. to 6 a.m. There are areas called “PC Bangs,” similar to a PC Cafe. Adults with full-time jobs and kids come to these PC rooms to enjoy video games. Some of the rooms contain small beds and showers for overnight stays. From a long night of gaming, visitors can get some rest or take a shower. Lastly, it is illegal to watch porn in Korea. If you try to access any website, it will be blocked and that goes for any kind of content related to pornography. These are just a view of the very unique rules that Koreans follow on a day to day bases.

SANTA ANA DONS CONQUER RIO MADELYN GASTELUM Reporter

Wednesday, Nov. 14, Rio Hondo men’s basketball faced off against Santa Ana College at home and lost by 10 points at the final buzzer. The Roadrunners started off strong against the SAC Dons with a few new faces out on the court as the starting five. The fresh blood didn’t help the Roadrunners with the final outcome as they fell to the same patterns from the previous home game. Rio Hondo put pressure on the Dons with an aggressive defense but spread their men too far leaving large holes for Santa Ana to break the defense and fight their way into the paint. The first half of the game Rio was able to keep up with the Dons with some big 3-point shots made by freshman guard Kevin Sandoval coming off the bench with a big impact for the team. Though Rio worked hard to put up numbers, the team still struggled offensively scoring less than 50 percent of the overall field goal average
The 2018 Rio Hondo Men’s soccer season came to an end Saturday night as one Roadrunner eliminated another from Southern California Regionals. The visiting College of the Desert Roadrunners sprinted past the Rio Roadrunners, hosts at the campus’ athletics field, 3-2 in a frenetic playoff match. Underdogs as the no. 10 seed, the Desert Roadrunners scored three goals that were unanswered until a late surge by no. 7 Rio narrowed the defeat. Goals in the first 10 minutes of each half by Desert midfielder Lucas

Rosales blew the wind out of Rio’s sails twice. A third was added in the 70th minute by midfielder Daniel Romero which had frustrated Rio players with their heads in their hands in disgust after going down 3-0 with their friends and family in the stands. Rio would bite back twice with five minutes remaining, but it was too little, too late for the Roadrunners from Whittier. “I believe that the kids gave it their best shot at the end,” Head coach Orlando Brenes said, “We had a pretty decent game, we gave up some terrible goals but I think the kids played their hearts out and I’m good with that.” A brace from sophomore midfielder Angel Flores late in the game posed as a delayed comeback but it wasn’t enough to salvage the season for Rio. “The season was a bit topsy-turvy in the sense that we started off very strong and then we faded. We tied some teams that we should have beat so our record should probably have been better than it is but even with our record right now, we’re over .500 and that’s the way it is sometimes.” CONT. Coming off a loss in the regular season finale, the Rio Hondo women’s soccer team were definitely ready to move on to the next phase of the season. The Rio Hondo College women’s soccer team began their postseason run Saturday, Nov. 18 at the Roadrunners athletics field. They hosted and defeated the Citrus College Owls 3-1 to advance further in the Southern California Community College Athletics Association Regionals. The Rio Hondo women came into this game as a no. 7 seed while the Owls came into this game as the no. 10 seed. Rio Hondo was the favorite as they came in with an 11-3-5 overall record and a record of 4-2-2 in the South Coast Conference at second place. The Citrus College Owls ended the regular season with an overall record of 10-6-4 overall and a 2-4-2 mark in the Western State Conference-East division that earned them fourth place in the WSC East. The Roadrunners and the Owls both didn’t finish the season strong. With just their second win in six tries, the Rio Hondo women proved Citrus were the inferior team. Freshman defender Marissa Morales cashed in on an assist from another freshman defender Viviana Ramirez while freshman forward Serina Vargas continued her excellence on the season with two goals of her own. They came on assists from freshman defender Jacqueline Torres-Espinoza, and Morales. The Rio women look to continue their playoff run against Santiago Canyon today on the road. In their first game, the Santiago Canyon Hawks made easy work of Golden West College in a 3-0 win with Santiago as the locals. Seeded at no. 2, the Hawks will be expected to win this evening. The Rio Hondo Roadrunners will have their hands full as they will come in as the underdog against an undefeated Hawks team.

a 41.2%, and a 34.2% for the attempted 3- pointer shots. The first half of the game ended 41-41 but Rios game play dropped after the start of the second. Santa Ana capitalized on Rio’s mishandled ball control and used the turnovers in their favor. Three minutes into the half SAC pulled ahead and led 49-45 and the Roadrunners couldn’t push back. Rio were unable to collect rebounds, giving SAC the opportunity to put more points up. With 8 minutes left, Rio was trailing by 14 points at 50-64. The Rroadrunners started to crumble with the pressure and the ball handling became very individual with multiple opportunities missed during their offensive plays. Head coach Steve Johnson called a full timeout in hopes to regroup his players and slow the fast pace of the game. After the timeout, the Roadrunners came out with a different spirit. Rio started to play aggressively and started to rebound better. This change in the game led to a comeback by Rio Hondo but it came too late into the half. The game closed out with Rio scoring 40 points in the half and Santa Ana leading at 50. The final scored was 81-91. MEN’S SOCCER PAGE 12 Rio goalkeeper Jesus
Rendon, one of the seven sophomores that played their final game for the Rio Hondo men’s soccer program, was the man of the match for Rio as his key saves throughout the game kept Desert from extending the lead further. “This season has been one crazy roller coaster,” Rendon said, “But I’m glad I was able to play with my brothers this season.”
