EDITOR’S NOTE Hello fellow reader, I and the rest of my staff were very excited when given the opportunity to put together our very own magazine. Naturally, for my staff and me, a soccer/football magazine came to mind. Each and every one of our staff members are very passionate about the game and being able to put a magazine together about it, was an amazing experience. With the recent spread of COVID-19, it was undoubtedly a very tough time for all footballers around the world. At the time of the magazine’s publication, all seasons are typically over around all of Europe, but since football has just returned in many of these European countries, it was hard to include content on the 2019/20 season. All content for the European Leagues are up to date to the 2018/19 season, meanwhile, the UEFA Champions League is up to date to the current time of publication. Football is not only a game, but it is also a lifestyle. With all our ideas, thoughts, and energy, into making this magazine, we hope you the reader can feel that same energy and passion the way we do for many of the world’s best leagues and of course for the beautiful game. Cheers, Enrique Medina

Photo by:Jesus Manriquez Major league Soccer, America’s top flight soccer league, is one of the biggest leagues in North America and one of the fastest growing leagues in the world. The MLS is considered a young league compared to the other leagues in North America, it is only 25 years old. A lot has changed since the first edition back in 1996. The first edition consisted of 10 teams: Columbus Crew, D.C. United, New England Revolution, NY/NJ MetroStars, Tampa Bay Mutiny, Colorado Rapids, Dallas Burn, Kansas City Wiz, Los Angeles Galaxy, and San Jose Clash. Most of these teams didn’t even have their own stadiums to play on, in the case of the LA Galaxy, they used to play at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. Today, the MLS is made up of 26 teams, with

some of the best stadiums across the continent. The LA Galaxy hold the record for most MLS Cups with five, but it is across town rivals LAFC who set up the record for best regular season for an MLS team. The black and gold set up the record for most points, highest goal differential, tied with the most goals scored, most goals scored by one player in a season (Carlos Vela), fastest team to 100 points, earliest team to clinch playoff spot and least losses in MLS season. The MLS format is a lot different compared to the rest of the leagues across the world. For starters, the MLS does not have promotion and relegation, teams from the first division can’t go down to the second division and vice versa. This is probably the biggest question when it comes to the MLS, as many believe it holds the level of competitiveness back. The format is a lot similar to the one in the NFL or MLB. The regular season is from March to late September or early October. The league is divided into two conferences, East and West. At the end of the regular season, the team with the most points is awarded the ‘Supporters’ Shield’ and earns home- field advantage throughout the playoffs. The playoffs consists of 14 teams battling to reach the MLS Cup championship

game in early November. Unlike other leagues where new established teams usually have to go through several divisions in order to get to the top flight, in the MLS that’s not the case. All you need is an ownership group, since hundreds of millions of dollars are needed, find a stadium, obtain city approval and pay the franchise fee. According to multiple reports, the franchise fee for upcoming franchises is set to be around $200 million dollars. You can basically buy yourself into the league. Last year the MLS announced plans to expand to 30 teams for the upcoming years. Sacramento and St.Louis are two likely cities to have their own team in the upcoming years. Even though the MLS is different from the rest in North America, it is still the most attractive for players who are leaving soccer’s highest level in Europe. Ever since David Beckham came to the United States and showed the league to the world, more soccer super stars followed his steps throughout the years. Stars like David Villa, Steven Gerrard, Carlos Vela, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thierry Henry. The world class infrastructure, the financial support and the number of super stars are what makes the MLS a fast growing league across the U.S and the world.

Arguably the most competitive football league in the world today, the top tier English league known as the Premier League has had its fair share of memories. The Premier League first began in 1992, and prior to its existence was previously known as the English Football League. The English Football League began all the way back in 1888 all the way until 1992 and included clubs from both England and Wales in the top division. In the Premier League, there are 20 teams in the top division with three teams relegated to the English second division at the end of the season. The Premier League winner every year is similar to all the other leagues around Europe, winning via a points system where a win gives three points, a draw gives one point, and a loss gives no points. The current teams in the Premier League as of this season are: Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea, Spurs, Arsenal, Wolves, Leicester City, Sheffield United, Burnley, Everton, Crystal Palace, Southampton, Newcastle, Brighton, Watford, West Ham United, Bournemouth, Aston Villa, and Norwich City. Over the years the Premier League has seen its fair share of talent over the years from the likes of Dennis Bergkamp, Thierry Henry, David Beckham, Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard, Ryan Giggs, and John Terry. That talent continues even more today with the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Mohamed Salah, Virgil Van Dijk, Harry Kane, Marcus Rashford, Jamie Vardy, Raheem Sterling among so many others. The current champions Manchester City, have won the Premier League a whopping four times in the leagues 27-year history, but have been outdone on the all-time charts by Chelsea who have won the league five times and Manchester United who have won the league an astound-

ing 13 times. The only other winners of the Premier League include Arsenal who has won the league three times and Leicester City and Blackburn who have each won it once. The league has seen unforgettable moments to that will never be forgotten throughout the football landscape from Sergio Aguero’s last gasp title-winning goal in the last game of the season in 2012, to Leicester City’s 5000 to 1 odds to win the league to becoming champions in 2016, to Arsenal’s Invincibles season back in 03/04. The Premier League teams are distinct compared to other leagues around the world, as typically most Premier League teams play with a high tempo style of play. On top of the high tempo play style, the league is hugely watched around the world and holds home to some of the most amazing fan bases and stadiums in the world. Its amazing players and attractive play style play a huge part in that. The Premier League today holds itself as kings of all European Leagues as it is currently the most-watched league in the world. It continues to supply amazing generational teams and talent and is the epitome of the best of what club football gets.

The Campeonato Nacional de Liga de Primera División, or most commonly known as La Liga, is the men’s top professional football division of the Spanish football league system. It is one of the top 5 soccer leagues in Europe and the world. Real Madrid C.F holds the record for the most league titles with 33, followed by F.C Barcelona with 26. Although Real Madrid have won the most titles, it has been F.C Barcelona who have dominated Spain’s top flight in the 21st century with 10 titles. Although only nine teams have been crowned champions in the history of the competition, it is still one of the most dominant leagues across Europe. Since 1999, the Spanish clubs have won 18 European titles, nine in the last 11 years. Real Madrid, Barcelona, Sevilla and Atletico Madrid have dominated the Champions League and Europa League throughout those years. Real Madrid C.F vs F.C Barcelona, better known as ‘El Clasico’ is Spain’s biggest matchup and arguably the biggest club match in the world. ‘El Clasico’ can attract an average of 400-600 million people in 180 or more countries, everytime the two giants collide. Not only does ‘La Liga’ have some of the best teams across Europe, but also the best players. For

a long time, ‘La Liga’ was known as “La liga de las estrellas” or the league with the stars. Many of football’s best players in history have played in Spain. Legends such as Diego Maradona, Ferenc Puskas, Johan Cruyff, Ronaldinho, Zinedine Zidane, Xavi Herenandez, Andres Iniesta and the two most dominant players to have played in Spain, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Messi and Ronaldo gave the world of football arguably the biggest player rivalry in the history of the sport. During the nine years that Ronaldo spent in Spain with Real Madrid, Messi and Ronaldo dominated the world of football. The Ballon D’or, an award given to the best player of the year, was shared between the two with five awards each. During those nine years, Messi scored 472 goals and provided 196 assists for Barcelona compared to Ronaldos’ 450 goals and 119 assists for Real Madrid across all competitions. Messi also holds the record for most goals and assists in the competition. The Argentine has scored 440 goals and provided 176 assists in his 16 years in Spain. While people can have their preferences between the two, we can all agree that these two have shown a consistency that we have never seen before.

The Best of the Best By: Enrique medina Imagine a league where you can see the most elite footballers from all around Europe play. It doesn’t matter if it’s a team from England, Spain, Germany, Italy, France or another country, the UEFA Champions League is this. The Champions League is the definition of the world’s most elite football on the planet, home to countless stars and countless amazing teams, all together in one league to ultimately crown one as the best in Europe. The Champions League, formerly known as the European Cup, has been around since the 1955/56 season. The tournament used to include only 16 teams with there being only one team from a certain European country with the winners from the previous season also in the tournament. Since the 1992/93 season though, the Champions League has since included a group stage format with the top two winners of each group advancing to the knockout stages. The knockout stages are played over two legs with the team with more goals advancing over the two games. If both teams were to tie after two games, the team with more away goals advances or if not otherwise, the teams go to extra time with potential penalties in the second leg. The knockout stage includes the round of 16, a quarterfinal, and semi-final, before the main event of the final. The final itself is only one game for all the marbles. This format has set up countless memories and comebacks over the Champions League’s history. From Tottenham’s amazing comeback in the semi-final in 2019, to FC Barcelona’s unforgettable ‘La Remontada,’ to Kaka’s dominance in the 2007 semi-finals vs.

Manchester United, there have been countless clashes between Europe’s club giants. The record holders for the most Champions Leagues/European titles won belongs to Real Madrid who has won the competition a stunning 13 teams, followed by AC Milan who has won the competition seven times, and Liverpool who has won the Champions League six times. A total of 19 other clubs have won the lucrative competition over the years. The Champions League essentially is the only chance you can see a team from one European country play another. Ever dreamt of seeing FC Barcelona play against Manchester United? Real Madrid against Juventus? Bayern Munich against PSG? The Champions League not only allows this to happen but this has allowed us to see players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Ronaldinho, Paolo Maldini, Steven Gerrard, and other greats of the game to square off against each other. New rivalries have been created, more drama has emerged, and new legends and moments have come because of the Champions League. The ultimate club competition, kids grow up dreaming to win the most coveted club prize in the world. People cherish everything about it. From the anthem to the pre-game and postgame celebrations and so much more beyond. The Champions League has brought people together and the world together to see the best in the world go “mano a mano.” That’s why not only is the Champions League the mostwatched football games on the planet, but also the most coveted and most celebrated, rightly so.

Italian Serie A: the best league in Italy By:Jesus Marquez

The Italian league known as the Serie A is arguably one of the most competitive league in Europe today and has one of the greatest clubs in the world. Serie A is known for having the biggest clubs in history and producing Italian and international players since the 1920’s through now. The Italian league began in 1898 and the competition was organized into regional groups. Since the growth of teams joining regional championships, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) and CCI split in 1921. During the mid 1920s, different arrangements were tried until several inter-regional divisions merged into one. After making arrangements, the league became the Lega Serie A in 1964. As years passed the number of teams in the league was mixed. For most of Serie A’s history, there were 16 and 18 teams competing at the top level. However, there have been 20 clubs altogether. In the season 1947-48 was the only season with 21 clubs for political reasons. From 2004 to present, only 20 teams are competing at the top level. As usual all the leagues around Europe win via a point system where a win gives three points, a draw one point, and a loss gives no points. The Italian league also have top four places to get into the champions league and teams that finish in the bottom three get relegated to serie B which is the second division. Serie A has seen its fair share of talent over the years from the likes of Ronaldo, John Charles, Silvio Piola, Marco van Basten, Zinedine Zidane, Francesco Totti, Gianluigi Buffon, Roberto Baggio, Diego Maradona and Paolo Maldini. In Serie A there are a lot of successful teams in terms of winning titles for years and history. The three most successful clubs are Juventus, AC Milan and Internazionale. These three club giants have the most trophies in the league, but the team that won the most Is Juventus with 35 titles while Milan and Internazionale are tied with 18. However, the Italian team that won the most Champions Leagues is AC Milan with seven. Internationale has also won titles, the most successful was winning four straight Serie A titles. Yet Juventus continues to dominate the italian league in the last decade. As the league continues it gets more competitive every year since there are more teams trying to compete: Roma, Napoli, A.S. Roma, SS Lazio, and Atalanta B.C. are

in the hunt for a trophy. Even though they have titles in the early and mid 20th century, the underdogs have a chance to win something in the future. The league has seen unforgettable moments throughout the football landscape. One of the greatest moments in Serie A was when Juventus won the league five consecutive times. Another great moment was when the legendary player Maradona joined Napoli from FC Barcelona in 1984. His mere arrival in the city, enriched with Italian culture, woke the city from its slumber. Over 75,000 Napoli supporters were excited and he was unveiled at Napoli and a local newspaper even went on to claim, “Mayor, houses, schools, buses employment and sanitation, none of this matters because we have Maradona. Maradona led Napoli to their first ever league title in the 1986/87 season. He also won Serie A title In season 1989/90 season, won one Coppa Italia, one UEFA Cup and one Supercoppa Italiana. Another great moment was when Gonzalo Higuain equalled Rossetti’s 36 goals in a season record after nearly 50 years. The record seemed uncatchable for 85 seasons until Higuain equalled his record in the last season of the Serie A, forever making him one of the finest strikers to have played in the league. Last but not least the most unforgettable moments was when AC Milan 58 games unbeaten run between 1991-93 highest in top 5 European leagues. The side’s unbeaten streak was threatened on numerous occasions, but they showed character and grit to come back from behind several times to help establish themselves as one of the most dominant teams to have plied their trade in the Serie A. While their streak ended in March 1993, when Parma beat them by a solitary goal courtesy of a Faustino Asprilla strike, it did not deter the Milan club

from winning the title. Serie A today holds itself as one of the best European Leagues as it is currently the mostwatched league in the world. It continues to supply amazing generational teams and talent and is the epitome of the best of what club football gets.

Obviously one of the top leagues in Europe, the German Bundesliga has one of the best teams in world football as well as having the greatest moments in history. The German league is known for having ultras rising flags around the stadiums, great atmosphere, and best players in world football. The German Bundesliga first began in 1963 in Dortmund and the first season started in 1963. German Football started before World War 2 and played at an amateur level in a large number of sub-regional until, in 1949, part-time (semi-) professionalism was introduced and only five regional Oberligen remained. During the War the 1930/40 season was suspended and continued in late October. As the war progressed the league became more regionalized. In addition it expanded into occupied land, some of them annexed into Germany. The last German championship was played one year before World War 2 ended and won by Dresdner SC in 1943. But, the last official league game was played on April 23 1945 being the FC Bayern Munich faced TSV 1860 Munich derby ending with the result 3-2. In1963 German Bundesliga had 16 teams. The main reason it was enlarged to 18 teams in the mid 1960’s was because Hertha Berlin got demoted on account of a bribery scandal and the powers that Wwanted to replace them with another Berlin club for political reasons. Now everything has changed, In the Bundesliga it’s a little different than other leagues. In Germany two teams get relegated to the second division while the team that sits in 16th place faces the team that is in third place in the second division. For Example, last season in the 18/19 season VfB Stuttgart sit 16th place in the top division while Union Berlin sit in third in the second division. That means these two clubs have to play against each other in a relegation playoff. Whoever wins gets promoted to the top division. Meanwhile, the team that finishes top of the German Bundesliga wins the Meisterschale trophy and earns a place in the Champions League. The teams that sit on second, third, and fourth get to the champions league as well. The German Bundesliga winner every year is similar to all the other leagues around Europe, winning via a points system where a

1 win gives three points, a draw gives one point, and a loss gives no points. The current clubs in the league as of this season are Bayern Munich, Dortmund, RB Leipzig, Borussia Monchengladbach, Bayer Leverkusen, Wolfsburg, Hoffenheim SC Freiburg Eintracht Frankfurt, Hertha Berlin, Schalke, Union Berlin, Mainz, FC Koln, Augsburg, Dusseldorf, Werder, and Paderborn. Over the years the German Bundesliga has seen its fair share of legendary players like Miroslav Klose, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Sepp Maier, Lothar Matthaus, Oliver Kahn, Jupp Heynckes, Uwe Seeler, Franz Beckenbauer, and Gerd Muller. That talent resumes even more today with the likes of Jerome Boateng, Robert Lewandowski, Thomas Muller, Manuel Neuer, Mats Hummels, Marco Reus. Furthermore, there are now future youngWW players like Serge Gnabry, Kai Havertz, Dayot Upamecano, and Erling Braut Haland and Alphonso Davies. The current champions Bayern Munich have won the most Bundesliga titles with 28. From all the german clubs, Bayern has been dominating the league for years. No german team could match Bayern level because they have produced great players, and buy top class players from around the world. The Bavarians have also won a record of 19 DFB-Pokal and 7 supercups. Also, they have won 5 Champions league titles. The likes of Borussia Dortmund RB Leipzig and other teams have trouble competing with the biggest club in Germany. Let not forget the fans who support their german clubs. The German Bundesliga is known to have the greatest atmosphere and fill the whole stadium with flags. The ultras and fans from each team chant, sing, jump and show their passion for the club. Even though their clubs may have good or bad seasons they are always there to support their team every week. Today the German Bundesliga holds itself as one of the best European Leagues as it is currently the most-watched league in the world. It continues to supply amazing generational teams and talent and is the epitome of the best of what club football gets
