The Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreations had its end of summer concert at the Whittier Narrows Recreation Area this past September 27th. Delta Nove, a Long Beach based band closed off the season with a psychedelic instrumental breakdown that attracted park goers and family alike. “My kids love coming to park events,” said Maria Garcia, “they love music and they love the park, this is a great way to get them out of the house.” While the turnout was sparse, the people that did attend enjoyed free popcorn and snow cones with the relaxing music. “We usually have a better turnout for our events,” said Luis Guerrero, a Parks and Recreations supervisor with the Whittier Narrows Park, “but it was scheduled on a weekday. It could have been planned better.” The concert itself was a combined effort between the LA County Arts Commission, who provided the grant, the city of Hacienda Heights, who provided the sound equipment, and the Whittier

Yale Classmates of Brett Kavanaugh Says He was Lying DIANA JUAREZ
Managing Editor diana.juarez8805@my.riohondo.edu
A former classmate of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh says Kavanaugh is lying about his drinking habits during his college years. Charles Ludington, who went to Yale with Kavanaugh, said that Kavanaugh has downplayed his drinking during his testimony in a statement to CNN. “For the fact is, at Yale, and I can speak to no other times, Brett was a frequent drinker, and a heavy drinker. I know, because, especially in our first two years of college, I often drank with him.” During his testimony to a judiciary committee Thursday, Kavanaugh denied blacking out from drinking.
Ludington also described Kavanaugh as a violent drunk, saying he would often become “belligerent and aggressive” when he was drinking. “On one of the last occasions I purposely socialized with Brett, I witnessed him respond to a semi-hostile remark, not by defusing the situation, but by throwing his beer in the man’s face and starting a fight that ended with one of our mutual friends in jail.” “It is truth that is at stake,” Ludington said, “and I believe that the ability to speak the truth, even when it does not reflect well upon oneself, is a paramount quality we seek in our nation’s most powerful judges.” While Ludington doesn’t think that being a heavy
drinker shouldn’t follow someone for the rest of their life, he does criticize Kavanaugh lying about it, saying if Kavanaugh “lied about his past actions on national television, and more especially while speaking under oath in front of the United States Senate, I believe those lies should have consequences.” Ludington in his statement said he felt a sense duty to go to the FBI and tell them of his drinking experience with Kavanaugh, and he told the Times he would be going to the FBI this Monday. Ludington is a professor at North Carolina State University and has done small political work with Democratic candidates according to The New York Times.

Self Help Graphics Shares Roots of Latino Art On Campus Continued
Gazebo tents with tables were available for students to sit and work on their art. Once they finished, they were given a ticket to grab tacos with choice of meat and beverages such as Horchata and Watermelon. Martha Carrillo, an instructor for the organization says their motive to bringing these workshops is
so these cultural crafts won’t be forgotten. “Most art is now made digitally, and we want everyone to remember that it can be hands on. It feels like you are actually creating art rather than clicking with a mouse and a keyboard,” says Carrillo. Anahi Gomez, an English major gathered with
friends at a table and worked on stencil printmaking while they carved out their pieces with an x-acto knife. Gomez says she was headed towards the library until she was allured by the printmaking workshop. She was easily mistaken for an art major for her incredible cut out of an elephant. Friends were amazed
as they tried to convince her to change her major. Her print close to completion, she headed back to the workshop to screen print her piece. It came out to a beauteous purple to blue gradient. “Elephants are beautiful creatures, they bring good luck,” says Anahi Gomez.
Gomez and friends agreed they would like to see more cultural art events to campus and a pumpkin carving workshop for October. For those who missed this cultural experience can visit Rio Hondo’s Art Gallery October 18 through November 16 for a 45 annual Dia de los Muertos celebration with Self Help Graphics & Art.
Tr ump Administration Expands on Immig ration Rule LEO JOHN VILLANUEVA Reporter
leo.villanueva0001@my.riohondo.edu
The topic of Immigration has been a source of heated debate in America, and a thorn in President Trump’s side. President Trump made campaign promises to reform immigration, build a great wall, and make Mexico pay for it. The President has been trying to make good on that promise since his inauguration, but not unchallenged. Mainstream media, as well as social media, have been weaponized in the war against President Trump’s administration’s attempts to implement, and expand, immigration laws and policies with an endless onslaught of speculative coverage. Citizens and immigrants have relentlessly protested the President’s stance and ac-
tions on immigration, calling for his impeachment, and the abolishment of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The latest proposed change to immigration policy by the Trump Administration focuses on expanding the “public charge” rule found in the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA), section 212(a)(4). “Public charge” was a term introduced and stipulated in the Immigration Act of 1882, and was used to classify immigrants denied entry into the U.S. that had no means of sustainability. The conditions for denial were based on health, family assets, financial status, education, skills, and age. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) recently posted an advanced copy of the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM). Once the rule
is published in the Federal Register, the public can comment on the proposal for a 60-day period. The DHS’s defines a “public charge” as “. . . an individual who is likely to become primarily dependent on the government for subsistence, as demonstrated by either the receipt of public cash assistance for income maintenance or institutionalization for long-term care at government expense. In 1952, immigration was as highly debated as it is today, with a startling difference; Harry S. Truman (D) was president, the 82nd congress was in session, and was democratically run by senate majority leader: Ernest McFarland and house speaker: Sam Rayburn (D). H.R. 5678 (the Immigration and Nationality ACT), also known as the The McCarran-Walter bill of 1952 ,
named after Senator Pat McCarran (D), and Congressman Francis Walter (D), sponsors of the bill, was vetoed by President Truman; Truman’s veto was overridden by a vote of 278 to 112 in the house, and 57 to 26 in the senate. The INA is a matrix of titles, chapters, and sections, recognized as a body of law codified under title 8 of the United States Code (U.S.C.). The INA has been amended and modified over the decades; the most significant change was made in 1965, granting all immigrants an equal opportunity. Those advocating for immigration are concerned that this change will make it near impossible to immigrate to the U.S, as well as create undue hardship for those already in the here; the administrations sentiment is optimistic.
According to Melissa Boteach at Center for American Progress, “This is an attack on working families and says that you would have to achieve the American dream somewhere else before you even come here.”(CNN) “Under long-standing federal law, those seeking to immigrate to the United States must show they can support themselves financially,” said Secretary Nielsen. “. . . This proposed rule will implement a law passed by Congress intended to promote immigrant self-sufficiency and protect finite resources by ensuring that they are not likely to become burdens on American taxpayers.”(Homeland Security) It is expected that advocacy groups will challenge this rule in court.

Sat u r n’s Moon, Tita n Sees First Dust Stor ms EVELYN VARGAS

NASA’s spacecraft Cassini has displayed images that visibly appear to be huge dust storms located in the equatorial regions of Saturn’s moon called Titan. On Sept. 24 it was described and published in Nature Geoscience. Although Earth and Mars have also had dust storms Titan has been classified as the third Solar System body because dust storms have also been spotted in it. This finding has helped scientists to have a better and more well understanding at the captivating and dynamic type of environment Saturn’s largest moon, TItan is all about. Titan is said and described to be a very active moon, with this new discovery scientists as well as astronomers are able to add

Scientists Create Immature Human Eggs Out of Blood

Researchers from Japan have been able to create oogonia, primitive precursors to the human eggs out of the human blood cells. This making a remarkable achievement to the competition to manufacturing lab-grown eggs and sperm the fastest. With this research the Japanese scientist conducted they are a step closer to the technology that has the potential to transform reproduction for the future. Previous research was conducted on mice in which they used stem cell-generated eggs and sperm and the results were not as expected to be, so scientists considered other options. With this unsuccessful experiment scientists turned to the usage of human blood cells, and were used to develop induced pluripotent (iPS) meaning stem cells. iPS is better described as victims of “molecular amnesia” and they have no identity however they have the power to transform into any type of cell, this including blood to liver inclusively even a bone. The Japanese group of scientists coordinated their
research by transforming the blank slate cells into the “primordia” reproductive ones. Then they incubated the cells with artificial ovaries that were created with the use of embryonic mouse over a four month period. By the end of the test, the cells had transformed into oogonia yet they were still way too mature for the fertilization process, but successfully a step closer to reproduction for the future. The research and experimental efforts scientists are developing has the sufficient potential to entirely redefine the process of the human reproduction. Even though the results were “immature eggs” with further research and development it is a matter of time for scientists to be able to produce fully mature, lab-manufactured eggs. Within time the results of this experiment will benefit the individuals that face infertility issues, or same-sex couples as well as others who are incapable to conceive may be able to have offspring with their owned shared DNA. As it is possible for human cells to produce lab-grown eggs, it would theoretically make it viable for scientists to be able to reproduce babies out of other individuals blood, hair or skin cells.
ways similar to Earth. An example is that in Earth there are rivers, lakes, and seas that are filled with liquid and
water, on the other hand, Titan primarily consists of methane and ethane that flows just like water does in
Earth. Titan is also similar to Earth because the hydrocarbon molecules evaporate and condense into clouds that later rain back onto the ground, surprisingly Earth does that similar type of process with different substances. The variation of the weather on Titan within the start and end of every season it is undergoing makes it resemble the way Earth works as well. It is believed that the dust storms were formed as the sun crossed Titan’s equator, which lead into the formation of immense clouds in the tropical regions that caused these so called methane storms. The spacecraft Cassini was able to capture these storms during the few flybys it had with Titan. The strong dust storms that occurred in Titan implies that Titan’s equatorial sections are very active and changing consistently.

“Ralph Breaks The Internet” made headlines when a trailer to its film with all the Disney princess are together in one scene. The film that is set to release November 21, 2018, was facing criticism when Princess Tiana from “Princess and The Frog” looked like her skin tone had been lighted as well as her facial features. According to Cartoon Brew, a report Wall Street Journal stated that Disney started the process of reanimating the character “immediately after the images were released.” Because this was highly criticized, the studio invited representatives of Color of Change. The Racial advocacy group, who spread the word of this change on Princess Tiana, uploaded a poster that compared the differences of the old vs new Princess Tiana with the hashtag “Don’t White Wash Tiana.” The poster also had a headline with the words, “Disney, Don’t WhiteWash Your Only Black Princess” These representatives were there to to add input into how the studio should redesign the character. Former Employee Sues Telltale Games for Breaking Labor Laws

A former employee from Telltale Games has filed a class-action lawsuit against the company for reportedly breaking both California and Nationwide Labor Laws. This is being done at attempt to get the proper compensation for both the employee and the rest of the Telltale staff that was laid off September 22. Telltale is located in San Francisco. The complaint was filed September 25 and cited Telltale’s violation of the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act,
also known as the WARN Act, as the cause for the lawsuit according the website Polygon. Vernie Roberts, the former employee, says Telltale let go of employees “without cause” and without providing them with “advance written notice as required by the WARN Act.” The federal WARN Act is a law that requires most businesses with at least 100 full time employees to notify employees 60 days in advance of any closures or major layoffs. A mass layoff is defined by the Warn Act as the laying off of 50 or more employees in a 30 day period or let go of 500 or more
workers. The California version of the Warn Act is more strict with business’ requirements, while it still requires a 60 day notice, it adds part time workers into the mix. Instead defining a mass layoff as 75 full- or part-time workers being let go, and applies to any reduction of at least 50 employees. According to the lawsuit Telltale fired 275 employees without any warning and this means Telltale violated both the federal and state WARN Act. This would require Telltale to pay laid off employee not only their respective wages, but also; commissions, salary, bonuses, accrued holiday pay, failed pension and 401k contributions. Along with that, Telltale would also have to pay employee benefits under ERISA, Employee Retirement Income Security Act, and pay for medical expenses following the 60 days after the mass layoff.
The layoff was a surprise to the former Telltale employees, and reports from IGN states employees were only given 30 minutes to leave the building after it was announced Telltale would be closing.

Disney Will Still Use James Gunn’s “Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 3” Script ANAMARIA APARICIO Reporter

James Gunn, Director of “Guardians of the Galaxy” series, was fired back in July due to tweets on rape and pedophilia resurfacing. Because of this the film was put on hold indefinitely and will most likely push back the films original release in 2020. Despite there being some thoughts that he might be rehired, Disney has no intention of hiring him again. But just because James Gunn is out as director, that doesn’t mean that his script is. Disney still hopes to use Gunns scripts to continue the filming of “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3” after it was put on hold to look for a new director. This statement was said by his brother Sean Gunn, who also portrays Ravager Kraglin and provides the motion-capture performance for Rocket Raccoon in the film. Comic Book Resources wrote in their article than in an interview with Tulsa World, Sean Gunn stated, “I don’t really know yet what’s going on with Guardians 3. I know that Disney still wants to make the movie. I know that they have
every intention of using the script that my brother wrote,” The entire controversy caused outrage and gained support from fans and celebrities alike. Celebrities like Dave Bautista, who plays Drax in the “Guardians of the Galaxy’ films, threatened to quit if the film continues without him. According to Consequence of Sound, in a reply to a fans tweet about coming back to his role in the movie, bautista stated, “I’m legally obligated to,” but he added, “Guardians without James Gunn is not what I signed up for. GOTG w/o James Gunn just isn’t GOTG.” Because the film was put on indefinite hold, the crew and cast was allowed to work on other projects in the meantime. But Sean Gunn stated to Tulsa World that this could be tricky for Disney. “Obviously, I think it’s a tricky proposition for them to find another director to step in — and also the scheduling of a lot of other actors who are incredibly busy can’t be easy.” Sean believes that his role in the film as Kraglin isn’t finished though. New Line Cinema Wins Bidding War for “Train to Busan” Remake DANIELLE ANZURES Reporter
danielle.anzures8473@my.riohondo.edu
New Line Cinema has just won the bidding war for the American remake of the Korean Zombie Horror film, “Train for Busan.” The film will be produced by James Wan and written by Gary Dauberman, best known for their work on “The Conjuring” series, according to The Hollywood Report. The movie will be produced with Wan’s production banner Atomic Monster. Gaumont, a French film company, is also on board to produced the remake. Also joining the project is Michael Clear, Atomic Monster’s president of production. The original 2016 film focused on a train ride that going from Busan from Seoul with it’s main characters being a workaholic divorced dad and his daughter. The films initial release at the Cannes Film Festival was both a financial and critical success. There were around five studios bidding for the remake around a week ago,
not only including New Line, but also; Universal, Paramount, Studio 8, Netflix, and Lionsgate. By September 24, the fight was between New Line and Lionsgate, the next day rolled around on New Line had won the round. Given that this is a horror film, it’s safe to say that Wan is prepared for the job, not only has he done work on “The Conjuring” movies, but he also worked on recent financial success “The Nun.” Meanwhile, Dauberman not only has worked alongside Wan in “The Conjuring’s” “Annabelle” spin off, but has also worked on 2017’s “It” which was liked by both critics and audiences. He will also return to work on the sequel to the aforementioned film. He also is working on the DC horror show “Swamp Thing.” With these two on set for the zombie film, there will be high expectations for the “Train to Busan” remake.
IMAGE VIA INVERSE.COM Fans of the zombie film have expressed their dislike about the original being remade so soon after its 2016 release. The involvement of producer James Wann does; however, bring some hope into developing a worthy remake of the cult classic.

eauty and skin care trends are quick to spread with help from the internet. Currently Korea is dominating that domain and even when they do take ideas from other countries, they are the ones to get them to the mainstream. A thing people are doing now is washing their face with sparkling water. The idea did originate from Japan, but was adopted and popularized by Koreans. “Some spas in Korea have used carbonated mineral water to treat the skin,” Alicia Yoon from Peach and Lily told Coveteur,
“Sometimes it’s soaking the face in this water, or the aesthetician may recommend soaking cotton pads with carbonated mineral water and dabbing them onto the skin after cleansing.” Yoon says mineral water works better than the everyday regular water for cleansing the face. It supposed to help enhance your skincare products and could also help with pores without using harsh products. It is also supposed be more gentle for all skin types, but you should be wary of how much is being used. Well there’s only one way to find out if this does

anything and that’s by doing it ourselves. Before you get to the sparkling water cleanse the face with whatever you have. While the dunking method is the most tempting it’s not the easiest to do. Instead use the dab method and do it for around 15 seconds. Also make sure that the sparkling water is regular and not with bubbles. The results are going to be minimal, which makes sense as this was done once, but I can attest that it does make the face will feel more firm and a little more refreshed. This possibly did help current
skin care products do a better job. In terms of the pores, not much happened, but this might need to be repeated to see better results. Definitely not as painless as originally thought to be, but there was warnings not to use too much. Overall if you want to add sparkling water to your skincare routine go for it, but be careful of how much you use and how frequently it’s used. For more information on skin care consider talking to a dermatologist as everyone’s skin is different.

Last Minute Penalty Aids Men’s Soccer IGNACIO CERVANTES Sports Editor

The Rio Hondo men’s soccer team and the Mt. San Antonio College Mouties ended in a 1-1 tie Friday, Sept. 28 at the Rio Hondo soccer field. A late Maxwell Rodriguez penalty earned the Roadrunners an unexpected tie after Rio Hondo sophomore defender Roman Delgado was shown a red card in the 57th minute for a malicious tackle on a Mouties player. The first half saw both teams vying for the lead as Rio Hondo’s possession-heavy tactics were answered with quick counter-attacks from Mt. SAC. Both teams had chances to go in front and after both attacks hit the bar, the game went into halftime as a scoreless yet entertaining first period. At the re-start, the Roadrunners began the second half on the front-foot. Showing command and domination following head coach Orlando Brenes’ halftime pep talk, things suddenly got difficult for the hosts as right defender Delgado’s late sliding tackle appeared too strong for the referee whom quickly reached for his back pocket to pull out and show the Rio defender a red card.
“We never quit playing, we made that happen and they were deserving of it. After playing all half with a man short I was very proud of the players,” said Brenes.

Mt. San Antonio College goalkeeper Alfredo Lopez’s fails to stop a penalty shot from Rio Hondo defender Maxwell Roadriguez, giving the Roadrunners the tie.
A straight red card means the player must leave the field and his team can not substitute someone in his place, instead they are forced to play with a man down for the remainder of the match. The referee’s decision changed the momentum of the game instantly. It took just three minutes following the red card for the Mounties to make the man advantage count as sophomore defender Alfonso Lopez put the visitors in front. For the following 30 minutes, Mt. SAC enjoyed possession of the ball while the
Roadrunners defended. With one player more, the Mounties were on the prowl but didn’t manage to stretch its lead. Their inability to do so would come back to bite them as an 89th minute handball in the penalty box gave the Rio a chance to tie the game. With the pressure on, freshman defender Rodriguez made no mistake from the spot as his shot went past Mounties freshman goalkeeper John Samano to earn the Roadrunners a draw with essentially the last kick of the game. mentioned that, with the penalty being the last play of the game, his leadership abilities took over as he knew he would be able to deal with the scrutiny if he were to miss. With conviction, the defender was covered in glory after converting the chance. “It was relief.” said Rodriguez about the moment after he scored, “Going down a man for 30 minutes, getting attacked the whole time and having to make defensive stops and then getting that PK felt great.” Up next for the Roadrunners is a non-conference matchup with the Moorpark College Vikings today, October 2 at Moorpark. Coach Brenes was proud of his team and mentioned the momentum at the end of the game will need to be transferred over to today’s game against the Vikings in order to succeed. “When you play a team like this and playing a man short, the victory was playing them to the better end regardless of whether we played with a man short, the kids did that. We never quit playing, we made that happen and they were deserving of it. After playing all half with a man short I was very proud of the players,” said Brenes.
