#MeToo A Year Later
FACTS: It’s not just women Men started to speak up about their experiences too. It’s rare for men to come out saying they have been sexually harassed or assaulted – but you’d be surprised at the staggering number of victims that have come forward, accusing many well-known men and women of this despicable act.
It’s not just trending in America
In Malaysia, people have taken it to social media to share their stories with the hashtag. These brave souls are mostly all very young – most not even 20 years old yet. And that’s not even the tip of the iceberg. With the rising reports of rape, sexual harassment in the office, streets and school as well as sexual assault, organizations have taken it into their own hands to stop and prevent this – educating young people on the importance of consent and regarding sex education.
The backlash
Many have said that this movement is a way of attention seeking and how they ‘deserved’ it which all leads back to a big problem – victim blaming. Victims are the first to blame – what they wear, where they were and who they were with, apparently all ‘play a role’ in whether they are prone to sexual assault or not. There is also a very idiotic excuse on why men sexually harass or assault; ‘it’s just the way men are’. Generations after generations, this excuse has been brought up whenever a victim wants to come forward. In today’s society, women (and even woke men) are more empowered than ever before – standing up for themselves and not giving men that excuse. Instead of teaching our daughters and sons to dress conservatively and to act a certain way, it’s better to teach them to NOT rape or sexually harass. Data Gathered From SevenPie.com

It’s now been a year since the #MeToo movement first came into the spotlight on October 5, 2017, after The New York Times published an article detailing decades of allegations of sexual harassment against Harvey Weinstein. The #MeToo movement was first created in 2007 by Taran Burke, who created her organization called Just Be Inc. This organization is a nonprofit organization that helps victims of sexual harassment and assault. This hashtag has now been used throughout the year by victims of sexual violence to tell their stories and by those who are there to show that they stand in solidarity with the victims. Although this hashtag has now brought awareness to the issue, many still have a problem believing the victims, specifically men in power. When men in power are accused of sexual violence the first question and statement that always comes to play is that, “How do we know this really happen?” and “ This can ruin their lives.” According to The New York Times, President Donald Trump, held a rally October 2, 2018 in Southaven, Mississippi, where he openly imitated Christine Blasey Ford testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee. “How did you get home? I don’t remember. How’d you get there? I don’t remember. Where is the place? I don’t remember. How many years ago was it? I don’t know. I don’t know. I don’t know. I don’t know. What neighborhood was it in? I don’t know. Where’s the house? I don’t know. Upstairs, downstairs, where was it? I don’t know,” Mr. Trump said, as the crowd applauded. “But I had one beer. That’s the only thing I remember.” He then continues by saying, “And a man’s life is in tatters. A man’s life is shattered. His wife is shattered. They destroy people. They want to destroy people. These are really evil people.” Trump’s words come from Dr. Ford sexual assault accusations on Brett Kavanaugh, after he nominated Kavanaugh to be the Supreme Court’s 114th Justice. Trump wasn’t the only one to say that the life of a man is shattered with such accusation, but so did KavaContinued On Page 4

With only a short month away till voting day here in California, it’s important for you to know what you’ll be voting for. Here at El Paisano we want to give you an extensive look into the different propositions and candidates that will be on the ballot this year. To Begin, let’s start off with Democratic Candidate Gavin Newsom, 50. Newsom was the former Mayor
of San Francisco from 20042011 and is currently serving as Lieutenant Governor of California. He’s well known for immediately pushing the county-clerk to issue samesex marriage licenses, allowing over 4,000 couples to get married. But before his political career, Newsom, started in the wine industry. Opening a wine shop in the bay area, with some help from Billionaire Gordon Getty. Newsom was later assigned a job in Parking and
Traffic Commissions, by then San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown, and made his way up since. Because of his pushes for things like same-sex marriage, Newsom has built up a reputation as progressive juggernaut. In this race Newsom is continuing to pursue that reputation and is taking on issues like stricter gun laws here in California, defending immigrant communities around California, and is trying to put California “First”. He has also been endorsed by the San Francisco Chronicle. The Sacramento Bee on the other hand thinks different. According to one of their editorials, Newsom wasn’t always such a “Liberal Crusader.” Criticizing him for financial backings by the Getty oil fortunes and calling
his job as Lieutenant Governor, a job with only a few built in responsibilities. Newsom refused to interview for the story and has not yet commented on it. Our other candidate is Republican John Cox,62, who’s also never started off as a politician, but as a Businessman and Real Estate Agent. Cox grew up under the supervision of a single mother in Chicago Illinois. He attended University of Illinois at Chicago and Illinois Institute of Chicago, where he got his law degree. With Cox’s suburban and working class background his main political philosophy is, if he could make it rich through hard work and gumption, so can anyone. This isn’t Cox’s first
run in with politics, back in 2008 he ran for president which ended unsuccessful. He even lost his run for public office twice. Although after these failures, Cox is still fully backed and endorsed by President Trump, even if he admits he didn’t vote for him back in 2016. This endorsement is what most likely kept him in the race. One major interest of Cox’s is to pass a neighborhood legislature, which will cut up California into thousand pint size districts, leaving 50,000 - 10,000 Californians for each lawmaker. According to the Los Angeles times, this plan will rid of “Corny” politicians and the influence of special interests.
A Look at California Propositions 1-6 CYNTHIA RIZO
News Editor cynthia.rizo1559@my.riohondo.edu
Proposition 1 Authorizes $4 billion in general obligation bonds for existing affordable housing programs for low-income residents, veterans, farmworkers, manufactured and mobile homes. The fiscal impact will increase the state costs to repay bonds averaging about $170 million annually over the next 35 years. A yes vote allows the State of California to issue $4 billion in bonds for existing affordable housing programs for low-income residents, veterans and farmworkers. Private investors would buy the bonds and the State would repay them with revenues from California’s General Fund. A no vote on this measure means the state could not sell $4 billion in general obligation bonds to fund veterans and affordable housing. Proposition 2 amends Mental Health Services Act to fund No Place Like Home Program, which finances housing for individuals with mental illness. Ratifies existing law
establishing the No Place Like Home Program. The fiscal impact allows the state to use up to $140 million per year of county mental health funds to repay up to $2 billion in bonds. These bonds would fund housing for those with mental illness who are homeless. A yes vote allows the State to spend Proposition 63 (known as the Mental Health Services Act) tax revenue on $2 Billion in bonds for housing people in need of mental health services. A no vote on this measure means the state’s ability to use existing county mental health funds to pay for housing for those with mental illness who are homeless would depend on future court decisions. Proposition 3 authorizes $8.877 billion in state general obligation bonds for various infrastructure projects. The fiscal impact will increase state costs to repay bonds averaging $430 million per year over 40 years. Local government savings for water-related projects, likely averaging a couple hundred million dollars annually over the next few decades. A yes
vote authorizes the State to issue $8.877 Billion in general obligation bonds for water infrastructure, groundwater supplies and storage, surface water storage, and dam repairs. It also includes money for watershed and fishery improvements along with habitat protection and restoration. A no vote on this measure means: The state could not sell $8.9 billion in general obligation bonds to fund various water and environmental projects. JAKE LAURELL
Reporter jake.laurell7011@my.riohondo.edu
Proposition 4 would authorize a fund of 1.5$ billion dollars obligated bonds to provide for the Children’s Hospital Bond Act Fund. The fund of 1.5$ billion dollars would allocate the funds to the following: 72 percent of the money would go to eight nonprofit hospitals allowing them to provide comprehensive services to high amount of children that are eligible for government programs and better treat kids with special needs eligible for California
Children’s Services. 18 percent would go to five University of California general acute hospitals. 10 percent would go to public and private hospitals that provide pediatric services to to any child in California that are eligible for California Children’s Services. This measure has the support from the California Teachers Association and the California Children’s Hospital Association supports the prop. Proposition 5 amends proposition 13 to allow homebuyer of the age of 55 or older or severely disabled to transfer the tax-assessed values from their previous home to their new home no matter the new home’s market value, no the new home’s location in the state, and no matter the number of moves. As of the current day homebuyers of the age of 55 or older can transfer their tax assessments from their prior home to their new home if the the home’s market value is higher than the previous homes. If the new proposition is passed if stuck in a situation
where the new home value is different from the previous home the assessed value would be adjusted. If the new home has a higher value then previous home the assessed value be adjusted upwards and vice versa. This prop has support from the California Association of Realtors and the Homeownership for Families and Tax Savings for Seniors Proposition 6 is the removal of the fuel tax increase and vehicle fees that were passed in 2017 including the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017 (RRAA) along with requiring voter approval for the California State Legislature to impose, increase, or prolong fuel taxes or vehicle fees in the future. The RRAA was enacted into law in April in 2017. The RRAA increased the price of gas per gallon and raising the price of diesel fuel per gallon by .20$ and increasing the sales tax on diesel fuels by four additional percent. This law also created an yearly transportation improvement fee, and a zero-emission vehicles fee.

Proposition 7 conforms California daylight saving time to federal law. This proposition will allow legislature to change daylight saving time period by a two-thirds vote. Fiscal Impact meaning the impact this would have on californians would not be direct because changes to daylight saving time would depend on future decisions by the Legislature and potentially the federal government. What your vote means, voting Yes would allow for change in daylight saving time. If the change is allowed by the federal government. Without need for any legislative change, California would maintain its current daylight saving time period which ranges from early March to early November. A No vote on this measure means: California would keep its current daylight saving time period. With the approval of PropERIKA SUAREZ

What is Costa-Hawkins and what will Proposition 10 do? It is a law that applies rent control on single-family homes, take away the right of landlords to charge what they want for apartments after a rent-controlled tenant moves out. Control rents on buildings constructed after 1995. The law also locked into place rules in cities with rent control when Costa-Hawkins passed. If Proposition 10 passes, it does not change existing rent control policies, it repeals Costa-Hawkins.
osition 7, the biannual time changes would end. Medical researchers and economists agree that daylight savings can affect the health and productivity of the workforce, students and seniors. If Proposition 7 was denied permanent Daylight Saving time would remain, subject to federal approval. It would be light in the evening in the summer, as it is now, but winter mornings would be dark for an extra hour. The senator against this measure is, Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson. For more info to those who are for the measure, visit www. YesProp7.info. Proposition 8 regulates how much outpatient kidney dialysis clinics charge for treatment. This proposition requires refunds and penalties if charges exceed limit. It also requires annual reporting to the state. It does not allow clinics to refuse or treat patients based on payment source. The annual effect on state and local governments will range from a net posi-
tive impact in the low tens of millions of dollars to net negative impact in the tens of millions of dollars. Voting Yes on this measure means Kidney dialysis clinics would have their revenues limited by a formula and could be required to pay refunds to some parties (mainly health insurance companies) who pay for treatment. Voting No means, Kidney dialysis clinics would not have their revenues limited by a formula and would not be required to pay rebates. Given that dialysis is a life saving treatment from where dialysis corporations making huge profits but don’t invest enough in basic sanitation and patient care. Voting Yes would mean, supporting investment in quality patient care and ends overcharging that drives up costs for Californians. The ones whose purpose is to save lives are surprisingly against this measure. Thousands of nurses, doctors, patients, including the American Nurses Association\California, California
Medical Association, American College of Emergency Physicians of CA are opposed. Reason being, it would result in the closure of many dialysis clinics in California— dangerously reducing access to care, putting the lives of vulnerable dialysis patients at risk, and increasing costs for California taxpayers. For more info on both sides of the measure, visit www.YesOn8. com or www.NoProp8.com. Proposition 9, requires notification to victim and opportunity for input during phases of the criminal justice process, including bail, pleas, sentencing and parole. It establishes victim safety to be considered when determining bail or release on parole. Allows for more people to be allowed to attend and testify on behalf of victims at parole hearings. The measure reduces the number of parole hearings to which prisoners are entitled. Requires that victims receive written notification of their constitutional rights. Also, the measure establish-
So a bypass would not, in most cases, immediately lead to new rent control rules. Instead, it would allow cities and counties to make policies without any restrictions. According to LA Times, Supporters say Proposition 10 will offer relief for tenants on rent of house or apartments and that would help housing affordability problems in California. Opponents say it will prevent housing construction, where levels are already low and further increase costs and make the housing crisis worse.
Registration Guide says supporters believe it will restore authority to establish rent control in local communities, putting fair, annual limits on the amount landlords can raise rent. This keeps tenants in their homes rather than being pushed far away or into homelessness. As for Proposition 11, It would apply emergency medical technicians and paramedics working for private ambulance services must stay reachable during paid work breaks so that they can respond immediately to a 911 call when needed. In this case, there is not much to go
against it. Supporters of Proposition 10 say California faces disasters quite too often and prop. 11 will ensure EMTs and paramedics are paid to be reachable during breaks to save lives. In an emergency, seconds are the difference between life and death. So far, no one opposes the proposition. Proposition 12 will free chickens and hens of Cages. It requires that eggs being sold in California come from cage-free hens by the beginning of 2022. This also means that all veal and pork products sold in

The fiscal estimate provided by the California Legislative Analyst’s Office says, Potential loss of future state savings on prison operations and potential increased county jail operating costs that could collectively amount to hundreds of millions of dollars annually, due to restricting the early release of inmates to reduce facility overcrowding.Net savings in the low tens of millions of dollars annually for the administration of parole hearings and revocations, unless the changes in parole revocation procedures were found to conflict with federal legal requirements. California must come from calves or breeding pigs (or their offspring) that were not confined. Even though these animals end up on our plate, they should live freely. Those for this proposition say confining a baby veal calf, mother pig, or egg-laying hen inside a tiny cage is cruel. Products from these suffering animals threaten food safety. Those against it say that the egg industry betrays animals and voters. Californians already voted to ban cages by 2015 and will only legalize cages until 2022. On Wednesday October 3 cellphones all across the country produced an emergency alert sound and it was regarding a presidential alert. The sound was emitted on all cell phones regardless if they were on silent mode or do not disturb or what cellular company, with the only exception of the phones that didn’t receive the alert because they were turned off or out of range. This Presidential Alert was the first nationwide test purposely design to alert people of an urgent circumstance, dangerous threat,

terrorist attack, pandemic or natural disaster. “THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System,” it stated. “No action is needed”. Moments later this alert spread from cell phones to televisions and radios. However this wireless emer-
gency alert system was just a test but if a real catastrophe were to happen, the president or whoever the person in charge is would take the decision to send a nationwide alert, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency would immediately push the button. With this alert being
nationwide there was no way to avoid which led to complaints on social media. Before the wireless alert it was believed by officials that it would roughly reach about 75 percent of the approximate 225 million cell phones in the country, they highly wished for this number to increase. This test was origi-
nally intended to take place last month but it delayed by Hurricane Florence. The federal government designed a system to issue alerts, scripted in coordination with multiple government issues. Although they are limited to 90 characters, it will be extended to 360 in the future. Wireless Emergency Alert System has been utilized by local governments for more than 40,000 times since 2012 according to the F.C.C. Users could be permitted to unsubscribe from local alerts such as extreme weather or missing children incidents. Yet users are unable to do that from presidential alerts.

The Women’s and Children’s Crisis Shelter (WCCS) of Whittier hosted its 4th annual Lip Sync Event this past Oct. 4th at the Whittier Community Theater. The event, which was created to kick off Domestic Violence Awareness Month, helps victims and allies alike “Speak Out for Those Who Can’t.” Maria Martinez, a survivor of domestic violence, was the guest speaker and shared her heart wrenching story of domestic violence and how she was able to get out of that situation only after her abuser started hurting her kids. She managed to get out of her situation by going to a women’s shelter and is now working and giving her children a better life.
“I want to let young women know that the biggest red flags in behavior is jealousy and a controlling attitude,” said Martinez, “they are gateway behaviors to abusive relationships.” Officer Esteban Medina, a motorcycle officer for the Whittier Police Department served as Master of Ceremonies for the competition. Whittier community leaders dressed up to perform some of their favorite songs and try and win the audience’s favor. Every vote from the audience cost a dollar with full proceeds going to the WCCS. The show opened with WCCS board performing “Reach out, I’ll be there” by the Four Tops. Rio Hondo’s own Ruthie Flores is on the board and along with her colleagues gave a rousing performance that got everyone pumped up for the
competition. Whittier City Council member Cathy Warner, along with Mayor Joe Vinateiri and fellow Council Member Fernando Dutra performed a medley of “Simple Song of Freedom” and “Give Peace a Chance” in which Mayor Vinateiri held up a sign that read “Reelect Cathy Warner” during the last half of their show. Rio Hondo’s very own trustees Mary Ann Pacheco, Madeline Shapiro, and president of academic senate Michelle Bean put on their dancing shoes and gave an impassioned rendition of “Yes We Can, Can” as the Rio Sisters. Dawning black and gold, the Rio Sisters danced and lip synced across the stage. Nicholas Morlet, a Whittier native and realtor got everyone on their
feet when his “Oldman” presentation morphed into “Uptown Funk.” Morlet’s wife was very proud of his performance. “He likes to perform, we actually met in choir,” said Mandy Morlet, “he didn’t even practice any of it, just went up there and did his thing.” The Brookdale Uptown Whittier senior living center had a choreographed dance to “It’s Raining Men” that starred Joan Kemski and Jean Steele. Complete with special effects, the ladies and gentlemen of Brookdale charmed the audience. Whittier Host Lyons had a “YMCA” dance-along that had everyone in the audience cheering. And while all the performances were amazing, it was Rob Marin that stole the show with his production of “All
DIANA JUAREZ/EPM That Jazz.” Ultimately, it was the Whittier Host Lyons that won the competition. The total amount of the funds raised that night are pending. “Tonight’s money goes to the women and children in the shelters,” said WCCS President Julie Peoples, “we do more than offer a safe haven, we make sure the children there have what they need. And while I want to thank every vendor and donor, this year we want to give a huge thanks to Credit Union of Southern California for donating $10,000.” If you or anyone you know is in a situation where they need help the WCCS has 24 hour hotline (562) 945-393924.

China’s answer for anti-submarine warfare is to develop a massive “Death Star” type satellite, titled ‘Project Guanlan’ which means “watching the big waves”. Once the satellite is complete it should be able to locate submarines from an estimated 1,600 feet below sea, with an artificial laser beam that can reach up to about a Billion times hotter than the sun. This project started in May at the Pilot National Laboratory for Marine Science and Technology in Qingdao, Shandong, and has over 20 other universities all over China working on all the main components for the satellite. The main purpose of this satellite is to get a better view of what’s going on inside the world’s oceans. Essentially changing the game for naval warfare. According to ‘South Morning Science Post’One researcher, Song Xiaoquan, says that it’ll make the top of the ocean more “Transparent”. He tells the science magazine that “It will change almost everything.” But this isn’t the first time researchers have tried to build, or come up with a satellite of this scale. Researchers have been trying to develop an artificial laser like this for about half a century now. Doubt for the success

of this satellite is very high amongst some researchers, labeling it mission impossible. One Lidar scientist told ‘South Morning Science post’ that being able to look 1,600 under the sea would literally take some kind of spy gadget
from out of the Tom Cruise blockbuster movies ‘Mission Impossible.’ Completely uninvolved with the project, this scientist refuses to share his name due to the “sensitivity” of the subject. There are also all the fog, murky waters, and marine
life that the beam would have trouble going through. Penetrating through mother nature’s natural darkness would be nearly impossible. China although has agreed to still fund the project due to the new perspective taken on it.
Cancer Immunotherapy Wins 2018 Nobel Prize in Medicine DANIEL GOMEZ

On October 1st, two doctors were awarded this years Nobel Prize in Medicine. James Allison of the University of Texas at Austin and Tasuku Honjo of Kyoto University accepted the prize together for their research in cancer treatment. The focus of their research is manipulating the human immune system to naturally battle cancer, a treatment called Immunotherapy. The Nobel Prize cele-

brates the achievements of cultural and scientific advances in six different fields. For receiving the prize in medicine, Dr. Allison and Dr. Honjo were given a 1.01 million dollar prize that they will split evenly. Along with this, is the glory of winning such an influential award. Dr. Allison stated, “I’m honored and humbled to receive this prestigious recognition.” With this recognition a spotlight will be shined on scientists’ battle against cancer. Cancer treatment is a varied field with many types
of possible solutions, as such the research to find the best solution is an important task. The most common types of treatment include surgery and chemotherapy, but others exist including immunotherapy. For a long time, immunotherapy faced skepticism from researchers due to its inconsistency and inability to treat all cancers. The main goal of immunotherapy is to enable the body’s immune system to kill cancer cells, which does not happen naturally. Cancer cells contain inhibitors that shut down the
immune system. Dr. Allison focused on an existing protein and found a way to suppress allowing the immune system to function properly. Dr. Honjo discovered a new protein that would allow for a similar result. This process has been referred to as taking the brakes off the immune system. It is not perfect, being very costly and unable to treat all cancers, but it is still a large step forward in the fight against cancer. This award brings more attention to the hard work of researchers as they take steps toward finding a cure.
California becomes the first state to enforce a strict net neutrality law that restricts ISPs (internet service providers) from slowing down or blocking any type content. It will also restrict ISPs from charging apps for faster access for customers. Hours after Gov. Jerry Brown signed the bill the Department of Justice files a lawsuit against California. The Department of justice claims that the bill is illegal and the state has no right in enacting such law. According to Attorney General Jeff Sessions , “states do not regulate interstate commerce—the federal government does.” “Once again the California legislature has enacted an extreme and illegal state law attempting to frustrate federal policy. The Justice Department should not have to spend valuable time and resources to file this suit today, but we have a duty to defend the prerogatives of the federal government and protect our Constitutional order.” After former President Obama placed a federal net neutrality law and since it has been repealed California is the third state to enact a net neutrality law. State senator Scott Wiener co-author of the bill believes that this can be a stepping stone for other states to follow. If the federal government will do nothing to regulate the ISPs then it is up to them to regulate them. “It’s critically important for states to step in… what California does definitely impacts the national conversation. I do believe that this bill… will move us in a positive direction nationally on net neutrality,” Scott Wiener states. Many lawyers are split on whether the law is legal or illegal and if the state is within its jurisdiction to enact net neutrality. The Department of Justice may not be the only ones that sue California for this bill, ISPs may also join in on the lawsuit. The groups fighting the net neutrality bill may cause such movements to last many years. So this is something everyone will be keeping their eyes on.

On October 1, 2018 NASA (the National Aeronautics and Space Administration) proudly honor and celebrate their 60th birthday. Although it was founded on the 29th of July on 1958 the very first time NASA began to operate was on the 1st of October of that same year. Exactly 60 years ago the United States and what was then the Soviet Union were competing against each other in the so called “Space Rage” contest in which these two
nations went against each other and the clock as to who would be the first to breakout Earth’s gravitational pull and demonstrate whose technology and innovations was the strongest and successful. Politics and the Space Race that happened between that year were a lot for NASA and a huge responsibility to prove themselves. As to when it came to the innovations in Science and the technology specifically in Materials Science and Engineering, new obstacles were faced regarding space exploration because those demanded brand new solutions.
The ones traveling to, and working in were not restricted from these solutions, but NASA officially founded the principle that stated that “activities in space should be devoted to peaceful purposes for the benefit of all mankind.” NASA has done many things such as basic materials science solutions that we use on Earth, to the more sophisticated and futuristic solutions that could sometime improve the lifestyle of many millions of people. NASA has made some huge improvements when it comes to innovations and over the
last six decades a lot has been developed and manufactured by this federal agency of the United States. An example of how NASA is a part of the materials we use, you might consider and take note of the fact that sneakers we use have to deal with space one way or another. However, a pair of Nike Airs have a direct and straight descend from NASA technology which was developed by an aerospace engineer and Nike researcher, M. Frank Rudy. Gene Editing Can Speed Up Plant Growth
EVELYN VARGAS
Reporter evelyn.vargas3749@my.riohondo.edu
Taming vines from the wild as well as bushes, and other plants can turn them into new plants and crops. Biologists experimented with genes from ground cherries have been edited together which subsequently generated plants that produced larger fruits, as it was reported by research done in the past. Zachary Lippman, a plant biologist at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in New York had conducted an experiment in which he used domestication in tomato plants. As a result the tomatoes developed into a largerbigger size than the average, the outcome of those particular tomatoes
made it a one step closerstep more near to becoming a major berry crop. Plant biologist Joyce Van Eck of Cornell University, Lippmann as well as his colleagues got together to comprehend the ground cherries genetic structure and figured out which specific genes in particular give the domestic tomatoes the characteristics they have. Further along the experimentation, cutting one gene named (SELF-PRUNING 5G) with the gene editor (CRISPR/Cas9) generated a mutation that fabricatedcreated the plants to produce more flowers and additional fruit. The plants that underwent the experiment provided 50 percent more fruit than the ones that were not.left out of the experiment. It was
also discovered that cutting a second gene (CLV1) caused the the fruit to grow approximately 24 percent heavier. With this research it is possible that breeders might make mutations to plants by irradiating seeds or treating them with chemicals however, this process will take decades and the results might not come out as expected. Gene editing benefitted the process asbecause it helped condense the time to a much smaller number of years. Though the plants that underwent the experiment are not completely domesticated seeing thatsince a couple of them still drop fruit, despite that researchers are figuring out ways to make modifications and improve the results.

Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock JAIME APARICIO A&E Editor
jaime.aparicio2474@my.riohondo.edu
Though there have been a few comic book based movies in the year thus far, with James Wan’s “Aquaman” yet to be released December 14, most of the box-office success belongs to Marvel Studios. With the character Spider-Man being on loan to Marvel Studios from Sony Pictures, Sony decided to take a different route with Spidey related characters and build their own cinematic universe. The first film in that universe is the newly released “Venom.” The movie stars Tom Hardy as the title character Eddie Brock who eventually comes into contact with an alien symbiote called Venom. Co-stars include Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Jenny Slate, and Woody Harrelson.
IMAGE VIA MASHABLE.COM
Though the film does suffer from script issues, the initial plot is straight-forward with Ahmed’s character trying to improve upon humanity with his technologybased company The Life Foundation. He attempts to try and achieve this goal with the alien symbiotes obtained from a space mission that doesn’t quite end well. Hardy’s character Brock, comes into play, as seen in the trailers, to try and uncover wrong doings within The LIfe Foundation but instead comes out of the situation with a lot more than he bargained for. The film does feature several moments of comedy that may be hit or miss with audiences, but the dark humor suites the Venom character as taken from the source material. While Brock does have a sense of what is
Michelle Williams as Anne Weying
Riz Ahmed as Carlton Drake
considered right and wrong, the alien symbiote does not. And thus the conflicting, yet humorous, and sometimes heartfelt relationship between host and symbiote begins. The film also features action scenes that may seem too dark to be fully appreciated, but the CGI scenes that feature Brock transform into Venom are satisfying to watch. As it is also featured in the trailers, Brock does clash with Ahmed’s character Carlton Drake in a CGI mashup that has its moments of cool factor. Before the film’s initial release, fans speculated that Tom Holland, the current star portraying Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, would cameo in the film in some way or another. Although “Venom”
director Ruben Fleischer has been coy about the character appearing in the film during promotional interviews, it seems that Fleischer was just trying to steer fans away from being disappointed. In an interview conducted by Moviefone, Fleischer was asked if the famed web-slinger would make an appearance. Fleischer had this to say, “From its inception, at least as long as I’ve been a part of it, there was always a defined rule -- no Spider-Man. The challenge, obviously, is that in the comics he’s so defined by Spider-Man. But because of “SpiderMan 3,” we kind of saw the true-to-the-comics version and -- because of corporate stuff I don’t understand and probably shouldn’t talk about -- we couldn’t use Spider-Man in this movie. So that put

the onus upon us to create something original.” So Marvel Comics fans expecting to see the two characters confront one another on the big-screen again, will have to wait for another time when Sony and Marvel Studios decide to extend their deal and continue to share the SpiderMan character. But although Spider-Man does not have a confrontation with Venom in the current film, a mid-credits scene does introduce another vital character with a close and twisted relationship with Brock. A relationship suited to be explored in a possible sequel if the film continues to perform well in the box-office. “Venom” is now playing in theaters everywhere.

New “Chronicles of Narnia” films and TV shows are set to be produced by Netflix. The news was posted on the Chronicles of Narnia Facebook page October 3. Netflix will be the studio for the projects and will be producing with the entertainment company, eOne’s. Mark Gordon, for eOne, will be joining as a producer for the project. Douglas Gresham and Vincent Sieber will also be serving as executive producers for the series and features. “C.S. Lewis’ beloved Chronicles of Narnia stories have resonated with generations of readers around the world,” said Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer from Netflix in a statement. “Families have fallen in love with characters like Aslan and the entire world of Narnia, and we’re thrilled to be their home for years to come,” Sarandos said. “It is wonderful to know that folks from all over are looking forward to seeing more of Narnia, and that the advances in production and distribution technology have made it possible

for us to make Narnian adventures come to life all over the world,” said Douglas Gresham, stepson of C.S. Lewis in a statement. “Netflix seems to be the very best medium with which to achieve this aim, and I am looking forward to working with them towards this goal.” There are seven “Chronicles of Narnia” books, first being released in 1956 and is still being continuously published to this day, that Netflix will get to work with. There’s been
100 million copies sold and the series has been translated in more than 47 languages worldwide. The previous adaptations from Disney include “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” (2005), “Prince Caspian” (2008) and “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” (2010) being distributed by 20th Century Fox. Together, these movies have grossed over $1.5 billion worldwide. And before that, there have been other adaptations done
on the series, including a BBC tv series done in the 80s. “Narnia is one of those rare properties that spans multiple generations and geographies,” said Gordon. “eOne and I are excited to be collaborating with The C.S. Lewis Company and Netflix who have the capacity to translate the Narnia universe into both stellar feature-length and episodic programming. We cannot wait to get started on the multiple productions we hope to
undertake.” The idea of combining a television and film universe that are linked together, similar to what Star Trek and Marvel, has done in talks for a while with both eOne and Sony on board for it. Sony however will not be involved in the project anymore. There is currently no release date for any of these projects.

Heartthrob Noah Centineo will be joining the “Charlie’s Angels” reboot. Centineo, who broke into audience’s hearts with his role in “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before,” will now make the move to the big screen. The “Charlie’s Angels” reboot will be a game changer for Centineo who is primarily known for his rom-com films. It’ll be a nice change to see
the 22-year-old in an actioncomedy. Don’t worry too much for the actor will still be wooing audiences as he will be playing a love interest according to The Hollywood Reporter. There’s no information on whose love interest Centineo will be playing, but there are definitely some fun options. The current cast includes Kristen Stewart, Ella Balinska and Naomi Scott as our trio of leading ladies. Filming has already begun. Elizabeth Banks,
best known for her role as Effie Trinket in the “Hunger Games” series will be serving as director, writer and producer for the film. She will also be starring as one of the Bosleys alongside Patrick Stewart and Djimon Hounsou. The reboot will be taking influence from both the popular 70s show, as well the film from the 2000s that starred Drew Barrymore, Lucy Liu, and Cameron Diaz as the iconic trio. It will still have a new modern feel to it that a new generation can enjoy. The film is projected to hit theaters September 27, 2019.

Artist Kanye West took to instagram to show his support for President Trump with a picture of him wearing his “Make America Great Again” hat. Not only this but with a caption of, “This represents good and America becoming whole again. We will no longer outsource to other countries,” he wrote in a post, accompanied by a photo of him in the MAGA hat.
We build factories here in America and create jobs. We will provide jobs for all who are free from prisons as we abolish the 13th amendment. Message sent with love.” This didn’t sit well with many people and faced criticism. Not only was he faced by criticism by some of his fans, but as well with celebrities who didn’t sit well with West’s caption. One celebrity whose comment was posted all over social media was Lana Del Rey’s. “Trump becoming our
president was a loss for the country but your support of him is a loss for the culture. I can only assume you relate to his personality on some level. Delusions of Grandeur, extreme issues with narcissism — none of which would be a talking point if we weren’t speaking about the man leading our country. If you think it’s alright to support someone who believes it’s OK to grab women by the pussy just because he’s famous then you need an intervention as
much as he does, something so many narcissists will never get because there just isn’t enough help for the issue. Message sent with concern that will never be addressed.” Lana Del Rey was one of the artist who performed in West wedding back in 2014. Many people were surprised as well as proud of Lana Del Rey for speaking her voice. But Lana Del Rey wasn’t the only artist to say something. Chris Evans also took to twitter to reply to a tweet with the same photo
and caption West posted on instagram, “There’s nothing more maddening than debating with someone who doesn’t know history, doesn’t read books, and frames their myopia as virtue. The level of unapologetic conjecture i’ve encountered lately isn’t just frustrating, it’s retrogressive, unprecedented and absolutely terrifying.” West then took to twitter to clarify that he doesn’t want to abolish, but amend the 13th amendment.
The Writer’s Room Assembles for The Yet-To-Be Titled “Indiana Jones 5” ANAMARIA APARICIO Reporter
anamaria.aparicio8532@my.riohondo.edu
Indiana Jones has been a popular series since it’s first release in June 1, 1981 with “Raiders of The Lost Ark.” But now this series has gone so far that it’s coming out with a fifth film. It’s set release date is July 9th, 2021. The biggest news with this new film is that the setting will once again be global. With the previous film, most of the scenes were taken on U.S soil. Although it’s not a sure thing if that could be a reason, but the previous film, “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” didn’t do so well, but according to Slashfilm, “All signs seem to
indicate that when it comes to Indiana Jones 5, Steven Spielberg and company are determined to get things right.” The film was originally set to release July 10, 2020 and begin filming April 2019. But the film was set back due to key member of the creative team not being able to sign off on a script. They were originally going to get started on the filming with a script by David Koepp, who also wrote the script for “Crystal Skull,” but was thrown out and Jonathan Kasdan was hired to write a new script. Word is out that Kasdan will be having some help with the script, creating a writers room. According to Slash film, in an interview with Coming
Soon, Indiana Jones producer Frank Marshall revealed that he’s creating a room for writers to speak their ideas. “I’m just here trying to get the writers room together. Well, I dunno if you’d call it a writers room, but a lot of people that we trust pitch ideas and things. Gathering info,” Marshall said. He then added that Kasdan is still taking the lead on the script. One thing that is a for sure deal in the next Indiana Jones installment is Steven Spielberg is set to direct “Indiana Jones 5,” as well as Harrison Ford confirmed to return for his role as the title character.

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT Rapper Lil Wayne Releases Twelfth Album, “Tha Carter V”
IMAGE VIA HIPHOPDX.COM
Speaking Out For Those Who Can’t
Lil Wayne’s long awaited “Tha Carter V” had finally been released. “Tha Carter V” is the twelfth studio album by rapper Lil Wayne. It was released September
28, 2018 by Young Money Entertainment, Republic Records and Universal Music Group. The album had a difficult upbringing: There had been a battle between his mentor Birdman and Cash Money’s label boss, a dispute which the rapper finally won
in June. There were five years of release dates missed and rescheduled. “V” was released into a very different world than the album was intended to in 2013. With 23 songs, Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, XXXTentacion, Nicki Minaj
and Travis Scott, among others contributed to the album. Musically, despite the time this album has been kept from listeners some of the songs in “V” are, fresh, flush and even fun and energetic at times, with a hint of Southern trap and rap-rock sounds that Wayne pretty much started in the first place. Heavily autotuned Wayne sings on the gentle “What About Me.” To hear Wayne cackle out the lines “I see death around the corner/ And the U-turn sign lookin’ like a smile,” after XXXTentacion’s haunting chorus at the top of “Don’t Cry,” forces a look at mortality in this album. With guests from Wayne’s mother on the opening track “I Love You Dwayne,” spoken directly to him and his daughter Reginae Carter in “Famous.” “V” has a more emotional side that some of Wayne’s coldest moments on the previous “Carters” missed. In “Dark Side of the Moon” Wayne and Nicki Minaj are getting both uncanny and romantic at the same time. Wayne along with Scott gives his opinion on who rules the hip hop genre on “Let It Fly,” Wayne spits, “I’m revived, it’s C5/ Been arrived, kiss the sky, did the time/ Please advise it is advise or be advised, and we advise/ You not f— with me and mine.” Giving the impression he believes he, himself rules the rap kingdom. In “Open Letter” Wayne becomes vulnerable with his willingness to share his
insecurities and on “Can’t Be Broken,” he speaks of finding the strength to stay strong and carry on. The album’s finale, “Let It All Work Out,” is commended with a Sampha sample that shows Wayne at his most vulnerable and heartbroken. Wayne becomes transparent while discussing a childhood suicide attempt (“I found my momma’s pistol where she always hide it/ I cry, put it to my head and thought about it”), Wayne paints a dramatic portrait of feeling like he has come undone yet coming together again, with the grace of God. Wayne takes all of us back to the pinnacle of Hip hop and R&B with the boastful party track, “Start This S**t Off Right” the song features Ashanti, Mack Maine, and Mannie Fresh. According to the original tracklist, the song was supposed to feature Christina Milian. However, the song was saved from the first version of the album. As opposed to any “Carter” before this, Lil Wayne has created “V” to be a back-to-front journey, where the sacred and the self righteous meet, with his mom, daughter, and musical influences. In the five years since its original planned release, “V” has one of the longest backstories in hip-hop history and it even concludes on an up-note. The biggest surprise of it all is that long chronicle of “The Carter V” actually has a happy ending.

I did not have a chance to study abroad when I was in college, so being a professor in the program was a way to make up for that. Living abroad in such an incredible city was fantastic.” Aside from the beauty and excitement of London, Wetsman says it was relieving to get away from the daily hustle and bustle of city life here in the states. This experience will expose you to new possibilities, and no doubt broaden your horizons. You’re offered an opportunity to take your generals, or continue your education at every level. One selling point that would stand out for any student of Theater, English, or just a fan of Shakespeare is a chance to visit the Globe Theatre for a performance. The cost of the program is high (over
$10,000 altogether), however, financial aid can cover the cost. Wetsman says he’s never had a student interested in studying abroad that couldn’t go due to funding issues. Scholarships are available. Students interested should contact Prof.

Talk with your partner and overall enjoy spending your time with them. Since we’re discussing self-care, a DIY spa date is a must. You can look up a couple of simple DIY masks and take goofy pictures with the masks on, followed by the glow up. You can go to the gym together, hype each other up. If the gym isn’t your shtick, you can take a hike. Literally, taking a hike in nature is free and the sunrise/sunset pictures are worth the hike. Parking shouldn’t cost you more than five dollars. Flat tire? No worries, walk around the neighborhood with your beverage of choice or take the bus. Play tourist-what hotspots does your city have to offer?
Be mindful of excessive spending. Remember that communication is key, so if you have to cut back for a while, let your partner know. Not only will it be in your best interest, but you won’t be stressing out about the expensive dates. Who knows, you may find new hobbies. Overall the main thing to consider is having fun on a memorable date with your significant other.

ind yourself late or rushing to school some of these life hacks might help life a little easier. Instead of rushing to find what to wear, not matching, and unsure about the weather. Trying to spend the night before setting out clothes it will save about on average 15 minutes. After finding what to wear and the shirt is all wrinkled but don’t have time to iron try leaving shirt in the bathroom. When showering the steam will leave a wrinkle free shirt. Also while showering you can brush your teeth while in
the shower to save time. For girls an important makeup tool that is a 3-in-1 Mineral Fusion which takes care of eyeshadow, blush, and lipstick which is very helpful and can save time. While making breakfast, but do not have time to make scrambled eggs, get a mug crack some egg in the mug and heat them in the microwave for fast results. Want coffee, but no coffee maker? Get coffee mug and put a coffee filter with a rubber band wrapped around mug, pour coffee grinds on the filter then pour hot water into the mug. If there is an important reminder such as to print homework and meet deadline, here are two methods to help remind you. Put a sticky note in places
that will be seen such as a mirror or doors. Another helpful tool is making a checklist so you can visually see what has been finished or what needs to be done. Packing hot meals for school but no microwave at school, try heating your meals at home and placing hot food in a thermos; it will stay hot until lunchtime. Before leaving make sure you place important items such as homework, book,or even car keys place them by the door so, won’t have to spend time trying to find them or even forget them. When leaving and you see the gas tank on empty and unsure if you would make it to school try filling up the gas tank the night before leaving.
West vs Evans BETSY SEGURA Reporter

any of you are probably wondering what actor Chris Evans and rapper Kanye West are feuding about. Long story short, Kanye West took a picture with his MAGA ( Make America Great Again) hat whilst in his comfortable private jet. The picture was tweeted with the following: “This represents good and America becoming whole again. We will no longer outsource to other countries. We build factories here in America and create jobs. We will provide jobs for all who are free from prisons as we abolish the 13th amendment. Message sent with love.” As you can imagine, this sparked outrage among the community. For those of you who don’t know, the 13th amendment abolished slavery and involuntary servitude with the exception of punishment for a crime in 1865. Though the comment is alarming, it isn’t shocking. In early May West was in an interview with radio host, Charlamagne Tha God, when he voiced his
opinion on 400 years of slavery being a choice. West took to Twitter where he explained the “slavery was a choice” issue, only to make the issue about himself. Chris Evans had this to say about the rapper’s post: “There’s nothing more maddening than debating someone who doesn’t know history, doesn’t read books, and frames their myopia as virtue. The level of unapologetic conjecture I’ve encountered lately isn’t just frustrating, it’s retrogressive, unprecedented and absolutely terrifying.” Evans was only one of the many outraged people who took to Twitter and summing it up for all to see. Does Kanye not know about the entirety of the 13th amendment? Does he realize that he stands on a platform but contains no positive messages for the younger generations? West did what he does best, connecting the offending comment back to himself. Whilst on Saturday Night Live, West delivered a ProTrump speech that went unaired, however, the is video circulating the net. Fellow guests of the television show described the rant as being held hostage by West.
NOAH GARCIA/EPM Kanye West is known to start controversy in the social media ring; his opponent this time around is Captain America himself, Chris Evans. DING DING!

1) Wash, exfoliate and moisturize face: To get the best results make sure to wash, exfoliate and moisturize your face. Make sure to wash your face with warm water that will clear up the dead skin and hydrating dry areas of the face. Skin glow will go away once you apply makeup if you take too long. 2) Eye look before foundation: As many YouTube gurus do on their makeup tutorials they start off by doing their eye makeup before they start applying foundation. By doing this step first you avoid having fall out on cheeks and under eyes. Also by applying a primer to the eye lid that guarantees a smoother finishing look. 3) Make your eye look more appealing: Adding eyeliner to your look can make the eye look more appealing. If you have tried to two do a wing liner you know the
struggle of applying a dark black or brown liner to the eye and trying to make them both look identical. Start off by sketching the base of the top part of your lid do back and forth motions. Start at the outer corner of the eye and work your way towards the tear duct. Make sure to get as close as you can to the lash roots as possible to fill in the gaps. To define the look use eyeshadow underneath. 4) Natural but beautiful and easy eye look: Warm tones for dark eyes, cool tones for light eyes is the trick. A medium shade in the crease can make eyes appear larger. 5) Eye brows: Last but not least eyebrows are the key to a beautiful look. Make sure to always groom your eyebrows and when defining them do sharp edges. Following the direction your hair grows with your brush or pencil do hair like strokes to create the most natural look.

Women’s Volleyball Drop To 1-1 After Chaffey Defeat Chaffey College 3 | Rio Hondo 2

After a bright start to the match, the hosting Rio Hondo women’s volleyball team were unable to finsih off the Chaffey College Panthers as the visitors managed to run away with a 3-2 win at the Rio gymnasium. After taking sets no. 1 and 3, the Lady Roadrunners missed two opportunities to start the South Coast Conference-North season with a win. Set no. 2 finished 25-23 in favor of the Panthers with Rio leading the majority of the time and sets no. 4 and 5 were gifted as Chaffey got by with little effort. “We’ve got to stay in the right mind set, positivity goes a long way. We’re still dwelling on our mistakes,” said Rio Hondo head coach Teddi Esko, “In set five, we threw in the towel and we didn’t amnage the game. We lost ball control, we were quiet.” The squad, which is filled with first-year players, has looked promising throughout its games the past two weeks
but it’s inexperience continues to haunt them late in sets when it comes to closing games out. It’s been a learning curve for coach Esko’s talented but raw youngsters whom have a quick opportunity to bounce back and go 2-1 in league against the Pasadena City College Lancers. Like the Roadrunners, the Lancers go into the match 1-1. Both teams have the opportunity to take a step in the right direction as far as standings in the SCC-North division go. The Lady Roadrunners have played a plethora of state ranked teams throughout its preseason so these tests in conference should feel as winnable tasks. “We’re going to get back in the gym and we’re going to remind them the importance of max effort all the time,” said Esko, “For me, as a coach, I’m not entirely satisfied.” The Lady Roadrunners host Pasadena tomorrow, Oct. 10 at Rio’s gym

NBA Season Preview Women’s Soccer Earn Shutout JARBAS FARIA Reporter

This 2018/2019 NBA season should be a good one. The season is stored with wild trades and amazing free agency transactions. Not only did the Golden State Warriors, winners of four of the last five seasons, not lose any players, they actually gained arguably the best Center in the league, Demarcus Cousins. The Los Angeles Lakers made some big-time offseason moves and are in the talks of winning the NBA Finals. The biggest addition the Lakers got is the best player in the leauge LeBron James. LeBron left the Cleveland Cavaliers and joined a very young Lakers team. This Lakers team has some top young players like Lonzo Ball and. Brandon Ingram. They also signed former all star Rajon Rondo and Defensive Player of the Year Lance Stephenson. Other big name players that joined other is Demar Derozon joining the San Antonio Spurs and Kawhi Leonard joining the Toronto Raptors. Dwayne Wade re-signed with the Miami Heat and Jimmy Butler turned down a 4 year, $120 million deal with the Minnesota Timberwolves. These are very strong additions to these teams. here is so much good
young talented players entering the league, it’s scary. This year no. number 1 overall pick was Deandre Ayton signing with the Phoenix Suns, this was a huge draft pick for the Suns who haven’t had a solid big man since Shaquille O’neal back in 2009. Ayton is a 7-foot 1 inch center that seems to fit perfectly in the new era of the NBA. With the second overall pick the Sacramento Kings selected Marvin Bagley, Bagley had an outstanding year at Duke and is a do-it-all big man. Some big names that were taken in the draft were Trae Young going to the Atlanta Hawks. Trae Young has talked about being the next Stephen Curry with unbelievable three-point shot. Trae Young led college in points and assist per game at 28 points per game and 10 assist per game. With the 11th pick, the Denver Nuggets selected 6-foot-’10-inch small forward Michael Porter Jr. A lot of people were surprised to see him fall this deep in the draft as a lot of people predicted him to be the first overall pick. But due to a back injury, Michael Porter’s draft stock dropped. It seems like every team has a very talented youngster on their team and it shows how much the game is changing. The NBA is starting to become so much more entertaining and fast paced due to these young additions.

Two assists for freshman Danielle Moore and five different goal scorers during Rio Hondo women’s soccer team’s 5-0 win over the Pasadena City College Lancers allowed the Lady Roadrunners to cruise to a 3-0 South Coast Conference record Friday, October 5. At Robinson Stadium in Pasadena, Calif., Rio goalkeepers Izella Delgado, sophomore, and Dominique Valdez, freshman, earned a combined shutout to extened the team’s shutout streak to over 450 minutes of game play.
“Shutouts win games, shutouts are created by team play and that is what the coaching staff and team is working towards every day at training,” said head coach Jennifer Tanaka, “Sophomore Goalkeeper, Izella Delgadillo, has been amazing protecting the goal this season, Marissa Morales along with Viviana Ramirez, Karina Banda, Ruby Magallon and Jacqueline Torres-Espinosa have been solid defensively this season.” Coach Tanaka mentioned that in training the team has been working on scoring from offensive opportunities and was pround to see five goals from the attack. Along with freshman for-
ward Serina Vargas, Monroe’s ability to create chance after chance helped in making sure the forwards had enough to chances created going forward. Rio’s 30 shots were five times the amount the Lancers were able to reach. Four saves from Delgado and Valdez kept the clean sheet in tact as Pasadena’s four shots on goal were each repelled. A very tough preseason schedule which included no. 1 state-ranked Santa Barbara Community College prepared the Lady Roadrunners to welcome any opponent and believe further in their journey towards a state championships.
