Enthusiastic counselor, Julio Flores, is known for his big smile and outgoing personality. His big heart has lead him to forgo his 30th birthday and instead raise money for AIDS/LifeCycle. Flores didn’t want an over the top birthday because he said that he feels truly blessed with everything that he has and he wanted to do for his big 3-0. “It started as an opportunity to do something more meaningful, as I hit a birth-
day milestone,” he said. “I wanted to forgo a birthday party and instead celebrate the lives of those affected by HIV/AIDS, both present and past.” While talking to a friend about not wanting a party, he was told about the AIDS/ LifeCycle and decided that he was going to cycle from San Francisco to Los Angeles over seven days riding a total of 545 miles. Former Student Jesus Manriquez, “ I wasn’t surprised when he told our class he didn’t want a party instead he was going to do a bike ride for a charity.”
The opening ceremony for the ride will be a special one as AIDS/LifeCycle will have riderless bikes to honor those who have lost their battle to HIV/AIDS. Flores has been preparing for this ride by going to a spin class four days a week, called the Sweat Shop. He has taken a liking to spinning, as well as riding his bike on the weekend. With only one off day during the week that day being Wednesday.Flores’ donation page is helping spread the word for the cause. So far he has raised A renowned comic book writ-
er George Perez donated to his donation page. Perez has a personal connection to the cause. His friend Patrick Anthony Crosby who died of AIDS, was a life cut to short. Flores said it would only be right if he rode for him throughout these seven days. Flores had a goal of raising $10,000 and met that goal and raised more than he had anticipated getting $10,392 in donations in only six weeks. He said without the help and generosity of the Rio Hondo staff and their donations meeting this goal would not be possible and he is forever grateful for them. Counseling receptionist, Patricia Castillo said “ I love it! It’s nice to have someone that takes the time to help others and I love that he has met his donation goal.” The money will help those suffering from HIV and AIDS in the LGBTQ community. The mission of the ride is to provide free HIV/AIDS medical care, testing, and preven-
tion services to San Francisco AIDS Foundation and the Los Angeles LGBT Center. As well as reduce new HIV infections and improve quality of life for people living with HIV/AIDS. Flores is looking forward to day five of the race which is red dress day. The cyclist wear red during the ride to commemorate those who have died and celebrate their life. The mission of the ride is to provide free HIV/AIDS medical care, testing, and prevention services to San Francisco AIDS Foundation and the Los Angeles LGBT Center. When they cross the finish line they will be hearing the chants of many the pride parade. The AIDS/LifeCycle started in 1993 and has raised over $200 million and has had 42,000 riders participating in the journey from San Francisco to Los Angeles. Columbine Obsessed Woman Found Dead SAMUEL GARCIA Reporter
samuel.garcia8465@my.riohondo.edu
April 17, 18-year-old Sol Pais was found dead with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The FBI stated that the body was found near Mount Evans, where she was spotted earlier. Officials say that Pais had an obsession with the
1999 Columbine High School Massacre, which left 20 students and one teacher dead. The event took place 20 years ago this week. Police say that Pais flew from Miami to Denver and immediately bought a pump-action shotgun and ammunition. Schools in the area were placed on lockdown - including Columbine.
Pais kept a journal, where she wrote about suicide and acquiring weapons. NBC News states that she uploaded these journal entries to a personal blog, which set off red flags when she purchased a shotgun upon landing in Denver. “Had a dream last night about the future and it was eye opening,” says one of the entries. “Was only a week
away from the day and I had my [expletive] shotgun…” Police aren’t sure if she planned on attacking Columbine specifically, but it’s likely not a coincidence that she landed flew to Denver during the 20th anniversary of the Columbine Massacre, according to NBC news. “We are relieved that the threat to our schools and community is no longer pres-
ent,” said Jason Glass, superintendent of the Jefferson County public school district, including Columbine High School. “While this threat has been the most significant, it is not the only challenge facing our schools and our community in these days leading up to the Columbine anniversary.”

Sony Teases New Details For Next-Gen System
JAIME APARICIO / EL PAISANO NEWS With Sony announcing their work on upcoming technology, many gamers on social media expressed their dislike on a new potential console. Remarks ranging from an “unnecessary upgrade” to “why wasn’t the PS4 backwards compatible from the beginning” were apparent on sites such as Facebook and Twitter.
DAVID IBARRA Reporter
david.ibarra4617@my.riohondo.edu
Sony’s new system, which has remained unnamed, has hit the forefront of conversation. With the Playstation 4 nearing its six year anniversary later in the year, a next-generation console is rumored to be hitting stores in the near future. Lead System Architect Mark Cerny has announced some of the internal plans
for the new system. Some of the new internal parts of the console will include a high-spec solid state drive for memory and storage, a graphics processing unit that will support ray tracing, and will offer backwards compatibility so users will be able to play their PS4 games. Speaking with Wired, Cerny revealed that the GPU will support ray tracing, which is described as the ability to render light to bounce off objects in a
game, so that the lighting and graphics as a whole can become more advanced. It is a form of technology that has been implemented in Hollywood movies, but has not been implemented into video games. Sony looks to reach new heights with its next-gen system. It will also support 8K graphics. Further discussing new heights for the next-gen system with Wired, Cerny exemplified how much faster a game will load and process
its downloads. He used a PS4 Pro to show a 15-second fast travel within the Sony exclusive Spider-man game. He then did the same thing on a Playstation devkit for the new system, which only took 0.8 seconds. This is a result of specializing in an SSD for the next-gen console, making it faster to process downloads and game speeds. Cerny also confirmed that the coming console will accept physical copies of games and media, as well as
the ability to play PS4 games. There has been a lot kept under wraps with the new system. Price points and design remain a mystery and will more than likely remain one until the product has been completed. Cerny guaranteed to Wired that the console will not release this year and little promotion will be done for it while they continue to make the console a true upgrade from 2013’s Playstation 4.
Coachella Highlights: Weekend One ASHLEY LOZANO Reporter
ashley.lozano1408@ my.riohondo.edu
The much anticipated Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival finally took place in Indio April 12-14 and many memorable things happened on the first of two weekends. From on stage malfunctions, surprise artists performing, history being made, and memorial dedications, Coachella 2019 was definitely one for the books. Technical difficulties seemed to be a common thing at the festival. Multiple performances were affected
by Mic malfunctions and light displays not cooperating. Artist Billie Eilish started her performance 35 minutes late due to the screens not working. Her performance also included a Mic malfunction from guest performer Vince Staples. When Staples appeared on stage the audience quickly noticed that his Mic wasn’t on. Although they the finished song, his Mic never turned on. During Ariana Grande’s performance, Nicki Minaj did a surprise performance singing their single “Bang Bang.” When Minaj’s performance cue
came up, they struggled to get the lyrics right. Apparently Minaj’s ear piece malfunctioned causing her to stumble her words. On the brighter side of things, Coachella made their own festival history on four separate occasions. Grande is now the youngest person to ever headline the festival. Composer, Calypso Rose, is the oldest person to ever perform at Coachella at 78-years-old. The group “Perfume” became the first ever “J-pop” artist to perform at this festival and the group “Blackpink” became the first all-girls “K-pop” group to
also perform. Some artist performances included emotional tributes and touching speeches. During Kid Cudi’s performance, he dedicated his hit-single “Pursuit of Happiness” to Mac Miller and Nipsey Hussle. Miller and Hussle were close friends to the singer and the performance brought out emotions to much of the crowd. Singer Anderson Paak, also dedicated a song to both men who recently passed away. He sang Mac Miller’s song “Dang” that also featured Paak. Headliner, Childish Gambino,
took a moment during his performance and delivered an emotional speech that was not only dedicated to Miller and Hussle as well, but to his father, who passed away this year. Although many complications occurred, weekend one of Coachella was a success. It was definitely an emotional rollercoaster for many, but it received many positive reviews from festival goers. Now to wait for weekend two and see what it brings.

Game Of Thrones Season 8: Episode 2 Recap ESTEVAN MACIAS Reporter
estevan.macias6303@my.riohondo.edu
We are back for another new episode of Game of Thrones. This time with less recap and more set up to what will happen in later episodes. Overall a good episode and expecting this to be the last of the “heartfelt” episodes. Now onto the recap and remember. WINTERFELL and The LANNISTERS The episode starts up with Jaime Lannister in front of queen and her
council. Everyone is of course skeptical for their own reasons until Brienne vouches for him. Jaime gets a lot of development this episode as he even talks to Bran. Which has him apologizing for what he had done which is something his character in the past would never do. Bran sees it as more of it made them both into the people they are today so all is forgiven for now. Tyrion is also having his own troubles as Jamie reveals that Cersei was never planning to fight with them. This makes him
as The Hand look like a fool in Daenerys eyes. It is not until Jorah convinces her that Tyrion has done more good then bad. He also goes on to convince her to talk to Sansa as well. WINTERFELL and PREPARATIONS As we see throughout the episode, Winterfell is working non-stop to prepare for the battle against the walkers. As we see more dragon glass weapons then ever and we get lots of planning in the war room. There, Bran reveals that the Night King
is actually after him. While after we have a lot of the cast hanging around the fire before the big fight. Here we get Brienne getting knighted by Jamie which was a really beautiful moment. After, Podric starts to sing Jennie’s Song while we get shots of characters who care for one another. Which also includes a newly found love in Gendry and Arya. This scene really sets up more stakes as does the episode for what could be entirely lost in the next. ENDING and WRAP UP In the last few minutes
we finally get John revealing his true identity to Daenreys. She may not fully believe him but she does take concern in him being the rightful heir to the throne. We then get our final shot with the White Walkers lined up and staring directly at Jon, Tyrion and Daenreys. With only 4 episodes left and next week episode being a very large battle, I would expect some heartbreaking losses very soon.

They are also regarded as some of the best rappers of all time. The two have worked on music before with one of their hit singles, “In the Morning” reaching the top 1oo of the Billboard charts back in 2011. Aside from that song, Drake and J. Cole have seldom collaborated with each other. Drake is currently doing big concerts in Europe for his “Assassination Vacation” Tour. Recently at his concert in London, he brought out J. Cole to perform his hit song, “Middle Child”. After the performance, Drake spoke to the crowd and hinted at making new music with J. Cole. When speaking on the mic he stated, “I can’t wait to make some new music with you. I know we were working. I can’t wait to let these people hear it.” As soon as the large crowd heard about the news they exploded in excitement. What better way to guess an outcome of the finale with the announcement of a music playlist. Titled, “Game of Thrones: The End is Coming,” was put together by the two co-creators of the show and is a total of fifty songtracks with a duration time of 3 hours and 24 minutes (WHOA). As if it wasn’t enough to set hidden “Iron Thrones” and also stage a global traveling exhibit, Benioff and Weiss have made this playlist with the intent of giving “hints” about the season and what is to come and how it will end (Some artists featured on the playlist include: Rage Against the Machine, Led Zeppelin, the Doors, The Black Keys, The White Stripes, Kanye West, Royal Blood, Thrice, Black Sabbath, Slayer, Sleigh Bells, Black Flag, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and even U2 (and that’s just naming a few). Started Rio...
Going to Harvard
DIANA JUAREZ Managing Editor diana.juarez8805@my.riohondo.edu
DIANA JUAREZ / EL PAISANO NEWS Andrew Guerrero struggled to reach his dreams but was recently accepted to Harvard’s PhD program. Once a Rio student, Guerrero is now finishing up his bachelor’s degree at UCLA.
Start Rio, Go Anywhere. We’ve all heard that slogan at different times and from different people. The goal is to inspire us to start our education at Rio and, with hard work and determination, go anywhere. That’s exactly what Andrew Guerrero did. Guerrero, now 28 yearsold, grew up and spent most of his time in San Gabriel Valley, East Los Angeles, and Whittier. “I got kicked out of a lot of high schools,” said Guerrero, “La Puente high school, and even continuation school, you know?” It wasn’t until his uncle was murdered in gang violence that Guerrero decided to turn his life around. “I didn’t want to put my mom through that. And I was headed the same way. But then I thought to myself ‘what’s the most ‘respectable’ thing that a person of color can do? What’s the one thing that makes us look respectable? Join the armed forces.’ So I went to the Marine recruitment center and really,
that’s where it all changed for me,” said Guerrero. The Marine recruitment enter wouldn’t accept him until he got his GED, so Guerrero went to La Puente high school and started working towards completing the requirements to join the Marine Corp. This was what made Guerrero decide to start at Rio. “I figured, if I’m going to have to go to school I may as well take a class I like,” said Guerrero, “and when I got that first A? Man, forget it. It as a great feeling. I had never gotten an a in anything.” Guerrero slowly but surely got into the swing of things, and after a few snags, managed to finish a general education associates here at Rio. Guerrero even went to Spain for study abroad while at Rio. He applied to UCLA, his childhood dream school, and was accepted. “Rio gave me many opportunities and they were always very accessible. Everyone should take advantage of the opportunities here. I think seeing people from Rio go to my dream school helped me a lot,” said Guerrero. It wasn’t all sunshine and daisies for him, however. Guerrero had to drop out of UCLA after his first year due to personal reasons. “My family supported me and pushed me to go back and thankfully, UCLA was ok with me going back so I was able to
5 imagine what it all means. I believe that reading some if not most of the music titles, can relate a lot to the show. For example, Rage Against the Machine’s track, “Sleep Now In the Fire” can translate to the battle of fire and ice. As far as other tracks go, some which have some significance to the Starks or the North, which carry keywords/phrases of wolves. I even believe that The Black Key’s “Howlin’ For You” can be about Jon’s feelings for Daenerys. A track titled, “Wolves of Winter” by Biffy Clyro is CLEARLY about the Starks of Winterfell. The track, “Bottom Of The Deep Blue Sea” by MISSIO has to be about the battle that is yet to happen on the sea with Theon and his uncle, Euron. Even the Pixies’ song, “Wave of Mutilation” could hold several meanings. It talks about waves of the sea, and Theon had already been mutilated. Whatever the case, I think this is one fun way that the creators are challenging diehard GoT fans to use their noodles before we actually get to see what really is going to go down. In my personal opinion, I think that either Daenerys or Jon Snow are going to sacrifice their lives to save the Seven Kingdoms from the treacherous grasp of winter forever. enroll again. Once I was back in I made my own little community with other students of color,” he explains. “I would remind them to look around, ‘UCLA was never promised to us. We worked [hard] to get here. Be proud,’ I would tell them. It was hard because a lot of the time I wasn’t just telling them these things for them, but for me. I needed to hear it, even if it’s from my own mouth.” He hit the ground running once he got back and worked with Million Dollar Hoods on researching racial profiling in the police. It is thanks to his hard work and determination that Guerrero decided to apply to Harvard. “I’m skipping my master’s degree and going straight for a PhD. Harvard actually flew me out to see the campus and meet my cohort,” said an enthusiastic Guerrero. His passion for social justice is palpable, and there is no doubt that he is passionate about his work. Guerrero, like many students at Rio, didn’t have things handed to him. He struggled and fought every step of the way to get where he wanted to go. Now, he’s ready to go to Harvard in the fall and see where his dreams take him. It goes to show that you really can Start Rio and Go Anywhere.

LIFESTYLES La Llorona Folktale Importance of “Now, La Llorona roams the rivers and lakes for Daily Routines 6
eternity, crying out and looking for her children.” ASHLEY LOZANO REPORTER
ashley.lozano1408@my.riohondo.edu
The folklore of ‘La Llorona’ has been told for generations and with the new movie “The Curse of La Llorona” that just released, the urban legend is gaining more popularity with the variety of versions of the story. La Llorona, spanish for the weeping woman, is a Mexican folklore has been used for scary storytelling to terrify people or to get children from staying out too late in the night. There are many versions of the story but the common theme is that the ghost of a woman, who drowned her children in a river, can be heard crying and calling out for her children in nearby rivers and lakes. Many believe that if you hear or see La Llorona it will cause you misfortune. Since there are many versions of the story, the exact origin of La Llorona is unknown, but it is commonly told in Hispanic culture. One version of story, and the most commonly told, goes that La Llorona was originally named Maria, who was a beautiful woman from a very poor village, that caught the attention of a wealthy man who was passing through her
village. He instantly fell in love with her and the two got married. They eventually had two boys but the husband was always traveling and was never home. Maria noticed that her husband was falling out of love for her and one day he returned with a new younger woman, said his goodbyes to his sons, and didn’t acknowledge Maria to even say bye. Maria was heartbroken and beyond angry about her husband leaving her that in an angry rage she took her children to the river and drowned them. Realizing what she had done, she ran along the river looking for their bodies, who had already been carried away with the water. Maria was eventually found dead along the river after a few days of looking for her children. When at the gates of heaven, she was questioned about the whereabouts of her children and was forbidden to enter the afterlife until she found them. Now, La Llorona roams the rivers and lakes for eternity, crying out and looking for her children. A different version of La Llorona is that she was beautiful woman that adored the attention of the men in her poor village. She would often wear an elegant white dress
at night to thrill the men. However, Maria had two sons that would get in the way of her having evenings out with the men in her village. One day her children were found drowned by the river and many people in her village thought she drowned them to have the freedom to be with the men freely and others believed that the children drowned for being left neglected by their mother. Many people claim to have seen and/or heard La Llorona near rivers and described her to be a thin, tall women wearing a white or black gown with a veil crying out, ¡Ay, mis hijos! (Oh, my children.) It seems like there are many stories past down through generations about people who claim to have seen or heard her. Whether these claims are real or not, the simple thought of possibly hearing or seeing a women crying by a river, is a terrifying thought and encounter. Regardless of what version of the story people were told of La Llorona, it is still a scary tale to tell late at night or by a river at night. It’s an old story that still scares many and will most likely continue to do so for many more years.
ANAMARIA APARICIO/ EL PAISANO NEWS In some traditions it is said that La Llorona is resentful and seizes other’s children to drown in place of her own or she is a warning and those who hear her cries will die soon themselves.

When you create a routine and stick to it allows you to get the most important thing done first and out of the way. There is no room for neglect.
ANAMARIA APARICIO Lifestyles Editor
anamaria.aparicio8532@my.riohondo.edu
For some people a daily routine can seem boring and repetitive, but the truth is that a daily routine is important for our mental health. Developing a routine is helpful in making us feel more in control of everything and make room for important things. As a child we are set with certain routines, like when to go to bed, when to have meals, and when to play with friends. As an adult some people don’t have that daily routine anymore and because of this many people feel like they are stressed, anxious, overwhelmed. That’s because they’ll most likely try to cram everything in at the same time. When having daily routines, a person can become more efficient. You no longer have to think about what comes next or what to begin with because it has now become one of your daily task. This now allows you to do things more quickly and get them done. Not only are you becoming more efficient, but also allowing yourself to have more freetime. Your no longer spending your time making plans, decision-making and making preparations. There is now time disposable to do anything you please or do nothing at all. Daily routines also help us get rid of bad habits and create good habits. That’s
is because if you start doing something good continuously, you’ll eventually do it without realizing and forget all about the bad. If you’re one of those people who struggle with procrastination, then having a daily routine can be good for you. When having a set of tasks become a routine, it improves the chance of completing them because it becomes ingrained into our system and we almost do it subconsciously. This as well can you achieve your goals a lot faster. In order to reach success or become perfect at something, a person but practice what their doing over and over again. But, if you procrastinate on getting it done or practicing, there’s no way for you to reach this goal. By allowing yourself to be repetitive and practice daily you perfect a skill. Although daily routines are important, if this is something you are not use to, it is best to start off small. For example to just have a routine on certain days. Whether that just be the weekend or certain days of the week. Then slowly but surely you have start adding more days into your routine until eventually this becomes daily. Most importantly is to stay motivated. It’s easy to get side tracked or lose motivation. But doing something continuously can create discipline and eventually doing your daily task will come naturally. to you.

If a tree falls in the woods, and no one’s around, does it make a sound? Well, unfortunately, you won’t get the answer here. But, what you will discover is that a meteor exploded in earth’s atmosphere, and nobody noticed. December 18, 2018, said meteor did just that. The blast occurred over the Bering Sea, but scientists didn’t realize this until March 18, since the surrounding area is extremely remote. Lindley Johnson, NASA’s planetary defense attorney, reported that the blast gave off an energy of 173 kilotons. The atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima gave off 15 kilotons of energy.
Meteor Explodes in Earth’s Atmosphere
A similar event happened in 2013, when a meteor exploded above Chelyabinsk in Russia. It exploded 19 miles above the ground. Thousands of buildings were destroyed and thousands of people were injured. Don’t be scared, though. Images from Japan’s Himawari satellite show the explosion as a little dot against the earth’s atmosphere. So while it sounds scary to think that scientists missed an explosion that had more power than the atomic bomb, events like this don’t happen very often. Johnson states that events like this happen once or twice every 100 years. So rest easy, America. We probably won’t live to see another event like this.

A great shoe for women at work, out on the town, or special occasions is wedge heels which come in many attractive styles. They look similar to high heels, but offer greater stability. Wedgies can be found in shoe, boot, and half heels styles. Women can wear Wedgies all day comfortably, and walk sure-footedly. There are some shoes that are not healthy for people’s feet and cause a variety of health issues. One shoe that is really painful is high heels. Folks may look good in high heels, but in reality, they’re impractical, and can be dangerous. High heels burden your feet, legs, hips and back. The potential for falls and twisting an ankle outweigh the benefits. Flip Flops may have been among the first shoes humans walked on, but they are the most painful and harmful footwear wear. Sandals offer zero protection and support. The tread life on sandals my be high, but once again, the cons outweigh the pros. It’s possible to look good and wear healthy shoes: Be good to your feet, and your feet will be good to you!

The Los Angeles Galaxy continued its perfect April Friday night as Diego Polenta’s late goal sparked Dignity Health Sports Park into frenzy as Houston Dynamo were left heartbroken on the road. The 2-1 win was the Galaxy’s fifth consecutive. With one game in hand, they’re one point behind the leaguehigh for points. There was a relentless fight in the Galaxy’s spirits as Polenta’s header from Jonathan dos Santos’ corner kick capped a never-say-die attitude during 90 minutes where head coach Guillermo
Baros-Schelotto said his team found another way to win a game. “We did everything to get the ball, to be direct and play but for everything we did on the field was to win,” Schelotto said. “It wasn’t for a tie or to keep the ball. We fought and we won.” In Schelotto’s eyes, Polenta personifies a fighter. He mentioned his new defender is a winner and a warrior and that Friday the rest of the squad felt it which spread into their style of play. Throughout the first half, the Galaxy were fine with defending and allowing Houston long strings of possession with only two chances creat-
ed. After Zlatan Ibrahimovic earned and scored a penalty at the 30 minute mark things were calm in the Galaxy’s game management. In the second half, Houston’s Alberth Elis matched Ibrahimovic by provoking and scoring a penalty himself five minutes into the second half to equalize for the Dynamo. The game opened up and both teams fought for the lead as each goalkeeper, David Bingham and Joe Willis for Houston, were called upon for saves to stay in the game. First Bingham in the 54th minute when Dynamo forward Mauro Manotas wriggled behind the defense
onto a loose ball just outside the six yard box where his attempt around the goalkeeper fell short. Just 20 minutes later, Willis used the tip of his shoulder to parry away Emmanuel Boateng’s attempted chip after the Galaxy winger was put through by Ibrahimovic. Manotas will be upset with himself after this match because minutes before Polenta would bag the three points with his goal, the Houston forward had another chance to put his team ahead. His well-timed run gave him space in the box to put past Bingham, but the Galaxy goalkeeper used a right foot to keep the ball out.
The Galaxy continue climbing Major League Soccer rankings recently as a shaky start to 2019 has greatly improved the last month. Schelotto’s high pressing, high intensity, always energetic expectancies have lifted the five-time MLS champion out of its outdated, hoofing balls up to superstars days where Robbie Keane or Landon Donovan graced the pitch. “Today I think Houston tried to tie when we looked forward to win,” Schelotto said. “And I am happy because we found another way.” With speedsters like Lletget and Boateng along with tireless work-horses like Antuna and Jonathan dos Santos topped with Zlatan, arguably one of the greatest finishers in world football, adding the Argentine’s tactical approach to the game was a home run by LA Galaxy staff. Youngster Julian Araujo became the second teenager to start for the LA Galaxy this weekend. Rolf Feltscher’s injury gave Schelotto the opportunity to rest his trust on the 17-year-old who arrived in March to the Galaxy’s academy before debuting for the senior team in Sunday’s 2-0 win against Philadelphia. Another debutant in the form of a second half substitute was newly acquired Giancarlo Gonzalez who arrived last week from Italian side Bologna. The veteran center back will arrive as a boost to a Galaxy backline that has leaked six goals in six games. Up next for the Galaxy is a midweek trip to Minnesota where Minnesota United will host Los Angeles in their new Allianz Field. Sunday the Galaxy return to Dignity Health Sports Park to take on Real Salt Lake back at home.

Yelich, Astros Among MLB’s Best DAVID IBARRA Reporter
david.ibarra4617@my.riohondo.edu
The third week of baseball was a fun one. There were plenty of surprises from top teams underperforming to players continuing their hot streaks. I will discuss three performances that have been impressive and worthy enough to garner praise and three performances that were underwhelming and disappointing. Here is this MLB week’s 3 Up, 3 Down.
3 Up ASTROS Record: Last 10: Run differential: +26 33 hits against Texas this weekend Undefeated at home It’s 21 games in and the Houston Astros are yet to lose in 2019. And 7-3 in their last ten, the Astros seem to be shaping up to be the team they were when they
won the world series in 2017. Jose Altuve has increased his batting average to .316 and homered five times last week. The pitching staff has been top tier, which allows the team as a whole to carry a +26 run differential. It seems that things are heating up in Houston, and the baseball world is being reminded of the powerhouse team.
YELICH
Batting Average: .351 Home runs: 11 Runs Batted In: 29 Leads the league in home runs The defending MVP of the 2018 season is stacking up a strong resume in 2019. In 77 at bats, Yelich is hitting .351 with 11 home runs and 29 RBIs. Yelich leads the league in home runs and runs batted in and has set a franchise record for most home runs through the opening month of the season. With a struggling pitching rotation, Yelich has been the star that Milwaukee has needed to keep the team afloat -- sitting at second place in the NL Central.
KERSH AND CO. Dodgers starting rotation has heated up after rough start. The return of Clayton Kershaw mixed with Walker Buehler’s improvements and Hyun-jin Ryu’s solid contributions have lifted the Dodgers to a 7-3 record in the last 10 games. Record: 15-9, 1st in NL West Last 10: 7-3 What has seemed like a rollercoaster ride for Los Angeles’ pitching is quickly rising up again. After losing three of their starting five pitchers to injury at the beginning of the season, the Dodgers have used their depth to remain elite. Friday’s matchup saw Stripling deliver a 4.2-inning outing with 8 strikeouts and two earned runs. Before that, earlier in the week from April 14-17, Dodgers starters pitched a combined 28 IP while only allowing 5 earned runs. Paired with Bellinger’s MVP-caliber season, LA has found themselves on a six-game win streak after dropping six straight. The ability for starters to go late into games has allowed an already-taxed bullpen to rest.
3 Down BO’SOX
Record: 9-13, 4th in AL East -40 run differential Boston continues to regress as the season goes on. The defending champs are 5-5 in their last 10 and the American League MVP Mookie Betts is hitting only .216 through 74 plate appearances. The team as a whole has an abysmal -40 run differential and is last place in the AL east. It seems like Boston is spurting into decent performances but find themselves falling back into the losing category.
SLEEPY GIANTS Record: 9-14, Last in NL West Last 10: 5-5 Giants hitting this year has been underwhelming to say the least. Through 21 games, San Francisco is batting .206, that lands at third worst throughout the league. They are last place in OPS and only have 63 runs in 21 games. Their pitching has been a bright spot in a team that
seems to have dissipated early on in the season. Pitching has kept them in fourth place. Kevin Pillar, their latest acquisition has been hot and hopefully that sends ripples throughout a struggling offensive lineup.
MARLINS Record: 6-16, worst in MLB Projected wins: 65.4 It probably isn’t fair to pick on the worst team in baseball, but here we are. Miami snapped a four-game losing streak on Friday and showed promise for a team that traded away its stars in hopes to rebuild a contending franchise. The Marlins stand at the bottom half of every offensive category in the league. As a result, they let go of their hitting coach. Miami has a date with the AL central leaders Cleveland Indians in the coming week. They also have to face Washington and Philadelphia. It won’t be an easy way to a winning season for a team that has not won a series this year. May the baseball gods stand by Miami!

he weekend of April 13, the LA Times hosted the Festival of Books at Universit y of Southern California. There were many different booths and stands throughout USC’s campus that offered any thing from cooking demonstrations to free new reads. The Festival of Books also offered many opportunities to meet an array of authors and find out more about them and why they wrote their books. One of these author meet and greets was the “American Dreams Deferred” conversation, where guests can learn about the immigrant experience from multiple perspectives. Authors Julissa Arce and Rey na Grande were there to talk more about their books and the different stories they lived. Arce spoke about her book,

“I write my stories now not for the outside world to understand but for those who are like me. I wanted to give a book for someone who has lived the same story to make our hearts more proud.” Julissa Arce made many acknowledgments to authors who have inspired her, one of them was the other author at the conversation, Reyna Grande. The book “A Dream Called Home” by Reyna Grande is a memoir about her childhood leading up to her leaving for college. Grande spoke about the thoughts that always sat in the back of her mind growing up undocumented. One of the biggest fears was that if she didn’t do well in school and well in life she would be the reason that her family would be sent home. Grande said that this is still a fear for children today and emphasized the importance of paying attention to what is going on in politics, “Everything we do or don’t

There are a lot of thing that happen before and after and it is important to change our mindsets, “we need to look at it not as a crime but an act of survival.” In her book she talked about how her father was a big dreamer and how he would always talk about the dreams that he had for his family.
“We felt like we couldn’t dream like that because how could we accomplish those dreams if we couldn’t even get our papers? But my father told us something that really stuck with us. ‘Just because we are undocumented doesn’t mean we cannot dream.’” Grande also revealed her biggest challenge she had from writing her book. Grande had trouble to take control of what she was most ashamed of. “It took me almost four years to write my first memoir because I couldn’t figure out how to say my side of the story and to make me a protagonist in it.” Grande said she was never proud of being a ‘border-crosser’ because it was never something that was not spoken about. “It took me a long time to get control of what I was ashamed of but when I did that I knew nothing was going to stop me,” Grande followed this by revealing that she gained a lot of pride after as well. Grande said that her biggest motivation for overcoming an obstacle is her nine year old self, “If I could run across the border when I was 9. I can run across any border.” Out of all the literature that is currently listed in the common core curriculum for the K-12 grades only 2.5% of those books have Latinx characters. Without book signings and events like the Festival of Books many people wouldn’t know of the literature that is out there. Authors Arce and Grande both hope that their books will give those out there with similar stories a sense of pride in themselves and their stories. Arce said that the feeling she got from reading “House on Mango Street” is what she wants to give to her Latinx readers. The LA Times Festival of Books gave a great opportunit y to readers and fans to get to know authors that they probably wouldn’t encounter otherwise. Additionally it gave the chance for many to see representation for people of color within an industry that doesn’t have much to offer yet.

Endgame. The End of an Cinematic Era. JESUS MANRIQUEZ
Reporter jesus.manriquez9661@my.riohondo.edu
Avengers: Endgame, one of the most anticipated movies of the year, if not the decade, comes out in theaters this Thursday, April 25. We were all left speechless after the events of Infinity War, and now we get to find out what happens after the snap. Many theories have gone around involving the plot of the movie, mainly on how our heroes will fi x things. Here is what we could expect from Avengers: Endgame. Great Plot Story During Infinity War, we saw that the main protagonist was Thanos. We got to see things from his point of view. Since we saw him snap his fingers and wipe out half of all living things in the universe, we have been left out wondering how will the survivors fi x everything? Many theories have gone around, with the possibility of time travel being the most popular. If our heroes do in fact time travel to past events in previous movies, we could be seeing one the best superhero movie of all time. The fact that the Russo brothers, directors of the last two Avengers films, have said everything we have seen on trailers and commercials are from the first 15 minutes of the movie, tells us that we are

in for a big surprise. Death of a Major Character(s) Avengers:Endgame will be the last movie of phase four, or the infinity saga, in the MCU. Everything we have watched since 2008 with the beginning of the MCU with Iron Man, ends here, it has all been leading to this. The phrase “endgame” is usually used in a game of chess, where sometimes you must give up important pieces in order to reach a common goal, victory. This tells us that maybe some of our heroes may have to make a big sacrifice in order to fi x everything, maybe even sacrifice their own lives. Actress Elizabeth Olsen, who plays Scarlet Witch in the MCU, said last year that in Avengers 4 that things would only get worse
for our heroes. Many have speculated that it could be Iron Man or Captain America who die since both are at the end of their contract with Marvel. We will have to wait one more week to find out. A New Villain? One of the biggest questions coming into the movie is, what will happen next? Many people have speculated about who might be the next big villain for the future of the MCU. In many promotional toy boxes in other countries, descriptions at the back of these toys give us a hint. The descriptions talk about the mighty heroes having to fi x everything that happened in Infinity War, but having to face a new and bigger threat. So what or who could this new threat be? One of the most popular theories
is that Galactus will make an appearance in the future. Galactus is a cosmic entity that consumes planets to sustain his life. There was also another theory that we may be seeing the return of a villain that has made an appearance before in the MCU, many have speculated that it could be Ultron from Avengers: Age of Ultron. Avengers: Endgame is just around the corner and the hype keeps getting bigger and bigger. For many of us it is the culmination to a big part of our lives, we grew up watching these heroes in the last 11 years. There has been a lot speculation surrounding the movie and we know so much about it, but at the same time we don’t know much. The movie is said to be three hours and 22 minutes long so all of our questions should be answered by the end of the movie. And one thing is for certain, it will be a big hit. Pre sale tickets broke the previous record held by Star Wars: The Force Awakens, in just six hours. If you do not want the movie spoiled for you, be aware that a leak has been going around online. If you get to watch the movie earlier than others please don’t spoil it for others, like Marvel has been promoting. I hope you all enjoy it. #DontSpoilTheEndgame
Make America Great Again, Trump. ASHLEY LOZANO Reporter
ashley.lozano1408@my.riohomndo.edu
Tragedy struck Paris, France this week when a sudden fire broke out at the historic, Notre-Dame Cathedral. The fire started at the roof of the 850-year-old cathedral and after 15 hours of the fire spreading, it managed to destroy a huge part of the building. Luckily, most of the artwork inside the cathedral was saved when the fire first started but some still managed to get damaged or completely destroyed. After the fire was finally controlled and everyone saw all the damage that was done, many began to donate money to help reconstruct the cathedral. President of the french Republic, Emmanuel Macron, began a fundraiser and in just 24 hours it had reached almost one billion dollars. Many people continue to offer a helpful hand after this tragic incident, but one person who offered their assistance and many weren’t too happy about was President Donald Trump. Trump responded after the tragedy by tweeting, “Just

had a wonderful conversation with @Pontifex Francis offering condolences from the People of the United States for the horrible and destructive fire at Notre Dame Cathedral, I offered the help of our great experts on renovation and construction as I did in my conversation yesterday with President @EmmanuelMacron of France.” Although the tweet seems like an innocent response to a country who just had a big loss, the contro-
versy behind Trump offering help is that he’s offering quick aid when there are things in THIS country that also need that urgency of help. Places like Flint, Michigan and Puerto Rico really need that assistance greatly as well. Twitter user Eugene Gu, tweeted his frustration saying, “Whereas Flint doesn’t have clean drinking water, Puerto Rico hasn’t fully recovered, and 3 black churches burned to the ground without
comment, Trump offers money to rebuild Notre Dame. That’s not America first. That’s white people first, even if they live in far away countries.” The fire at Notre-Dame is without a doubt a very unfortunate and upsetting thing to happened and although it holds hundreds of years of history, it is still just a building. With all the money donated by people in France themselves, it looks like the country has it under control. No people were injured in the fire, it was just a building burning down. Even though that builing has many memories, it can be restored. Whereas in Flint, people are suffering and continue to deal with their contaminated water supply for the past FIVE YEARS! Many children become sick and have many difficulties growing up becasue the water is extremely bad. These are people being affect not just a buliding. Instead of Trump putting his energy into helping the cathedral, he needs to help the people in his country first. Afterall, he wants to make America great again, right?
