DIANA JUAREZ/ EL PAISANO NEWS The students of the Forensics Speech and Debate Team, honored at the board meeting, May 8, 2019- Not only has the team won dozens of awards this season, they have placed first in debate at the nationals tournament that they attended in March.

Awards Presented at Board Meeting DIANA JUAREZ Managing Editor Diana.juarez8805@my.riohondo.edu

After over 60 hours of intensive workshops and training, the 7th cohort of the Rio Hondo College Leadership Academy (RHCLA) were awarded their certificate of completion May 8, 2019 during a board meeting. The eight staff members participated in a ten month long fully funded training program that will better help them during their current and future employment. The eight month program, which starts in the fall, runs through the school year and involves at least 6 hours of outside assignments and

activities each month. The RHCLA was created in order for “the college to ‘grow its own’ leaders” by training current staff to have the opportunity to enhance their own capacity to lead more effectively. With a focus on self-awareness and effective communication, among other things, the RHCLA program is expected to begin its eighth cohort this upcoming fall. “I want to thank President Dreyfuss for her continued support...and especially to doctor Russell Castaneda-Calleros and Katie O’Brien for all of their efforts,” said Kelly Lynch, a FLEX committee member. But, the RHCLA program was not the only one celebrat-

ed during the board meeting. The 2019 Forensics and Debate team were also recognized during the meeting for winning awards at the National Championships. Professor Grant Tovmassian was on hand to speak about his team and award them their certificates. “I’m proud to say that this year we were tremendously successful on the competition circuit and we were able to bring the national championship [awards] to Rio Hondo,” said professor Tovmassian. It wasn’t just the student members that were recognized, but the coaches that helped get them to the national championships. “The real reason we were able to finally achieve this

success is because of the tremendous amount of work our coaches have put in into working with our students... Usually we have practices roughly about 16 hours per week and competitions Friday, Saturday, and Sunday...It’s with extra pleasure that I would like to recognize them,” said Professor Tovmassian. “I would like to thank all of you for the amazing opportunity to witness and to show not just our staff, our region, but the world that any student with the right support...we can all thrive. Thank you for bringing the championship home. But, most importantly thank you for volunteering and for your dedication to show us, the

board, that we need to invest because this is what happens when we invest..There’s a lot to be done from the board’s perspective to make sure that we fully support you and the next generation that comes through Rio Hondo,” said vice president of the board of trustees, Oscar Valladares. Professor Tovmassian also personally thanked President Dreyfuss for her support throughout the years and said that, “this year, president Dreyfuss has been very generous enough to support us with upcoming tournaments and cycles. Which means that that support is already taking effect and so we are very very thankful.”

Rio Hondo’s Campus Wide Repairs

LEO VILLANUEVA Reporter

Leo.villanueva0001@my.riohondo.edu

Navigating construction sites seems to have become an integral part of student life for Roadrunners. An email was sent out February 26th, informing

faculty members and students of a road closure on Circle Drive. With each new semester comes carmageddon, thanks to the fine job of security: a potential traffic and parking disaster was averted. According to Yulian Ligioso, Vice President of Finance & Business, a hot-water leak

was discovered under the roadway of Circle Drive near the Central Plant. The leak has been repaired, but work was halted due to heavy rainfall. An inspection of the site will be performed this week. Rio’s complex plumbing infrastructure combined with the lower quad’s topography presented challenges in locating the leak, but with the help of a drain camera, the leak

has been narrowed down to an area near the café. A plan to replace the faulty pipe, or perform a bypass is the next step. The Finance & Business dept. is contemplating a facilities bond for 2020, which will include infrastructure needs, and within those needs will be a plan to phase out Rio’s aging Central Plant. The “L” Tower, formerly the library, is being seismical-

ly retrofitted and upgraded to bring the building into compliance with Title 24/CBC. Among those upgrades are new restrooms, and new elevators. Contractors have clearly marked and secured each site. It is advisable to maintain a safe distance from all construction equipment and barriers.

NOAH GARCIA/ EL PAISANO NEWS Superintendent / President Teresa Dreyfuss addressing the crowd about her experience at the college as well as her journey , May 9, 2019 - During her speech, she also expressed gratitude for her family, whose been a constant source of strength and support for her over the years.

After years of Service, Superintendent/ President Teresa Dreyfuss is Retiring NOAH GARCIA Editor-in-Chief noah.garcia3720@my.riohondo.edu

The position of President/ Superintendent is often a short one, where the seat is filled for a couple of years and then the person is replaced. This short lifespan makes it hard for them to accomplish much, especially with the shifting needs and viewpoints of the college and its interests. Teresa Dreyfuss and Rio Hondo have always had intersecting goals; those being the flourishing of its students and the betterment of its community. After 32 years of dedicated service, Superintendent/ President Dreyfuss is retiring from her position, a time capped by her Retirement Celebration Dinner at the Doubletree Hotel in Whittier, Thursday May 9, 2019. The dinner started at 6:30, with opening remarks by the Master of Ceremonies Henry Gee, which eventually led to Dreyfuss addressing the crowd and thanking them for their support of her work. During her own speech, Dreyfuss remarked on her time at the school and how she had achieved so much , “I’m grateful for Rio Hondo College for making my American dream come true … Education has been my ticket to succeed, along with my strong work ethic, discipline, determination, and always remember where I came from.” It was then that she re-

ceived accommodations from dozens of people, all representing cities, programs and special interest groups- With several city officials presenting her awards for the works shes done for their communities. Many of the speakers praised Teresa for creating an flourishing platform for their communities to stand on. Martin J. Plourde, Superintendent of the Whittier Union High School District, conveyed the reach her positive influence has had on the area. “You don’t know too many superintendent presidents, who can truly say that their legacy is affecting the current 11,00 students and the future hundreds of students that will be coming to our districts and matriculating to Rio Hondo College, because of the hope Teresa Dreyfuss gives our kids.” Norma Edith Garcia, Member of Rios Board of Trustees,

addressed the crowd on the dedication Dreyfuss has had to the college and it’s community. “We know that the average Superintendent / President works three to five years, if they’re lucky. At Rio Hondo College, she has managed to serve over 20 students annually, over 1000 staff and faculty annually with a budget of almost 90 million annual . What I’ve learned from you ( Dreyfuss) is that we just can’t just think about today, but plan tomorrow because there is a lot of responsibilities on our shoulders. ” Many people praised her creation of dozens of different programs with her smart monetary management has helped Rio Hondo, as well as its contributors to Flourish. At the end of the night, Celebrity Cici Lau ( Brooklyn 99 / Legally Blonde ) entertained the crowd with her voice as well as filling the dance floor

with attendees. From a young age, Teresa was encouraged to pursue higher learning, with her mother doing all of the housework so that she could focus on her studies. She would later im-

migrate to America from Taiwan, where she’d eventually work at Rio as an accountant in 1987. She would steadily rise through the ranks, as she would become interim superintendent/president in 2012, later permanently taking the post a year later. President Dreyfuss has racked up a number of achievements during the last several years. This includes ensuring no layoffs and furloughs during the last economic recession, execute close to $300 million in construction projects, open three regional campuses, create a four-year degree in automotive technology as well as a free year of tuition for incoming high schoolers named the “Rio Promise”. Earlier this year, She was awarded with the Distinguished Woman of the Year for the 57th Assembly District . Dreyfuss officially retires on June 30th, filling a position in the community that will be hard to fill.

Flores didn’t want an over the top birthday because he said that he feels truly blessed with everything that he has and he wanted to do for his big 3-0. “It started as an opportunity to do something more meaningful, as I hit a birthday milestone,” he said. “I wanted to forgo a birthday party and instead celebrate the lives of those affected by HIV/AIDS, both present and past.” While talking to a friend about not wanting a party, he was told about the AIDS/ LifeCycle and decided that he was going to cycle from San Francisco to Los Angeles over seven days riding a total of 545 miles. Former Student Jesus Manriquez, “ I wasn’t surprised when he told our class he didn’t want a party instead he was going to do a bike ride for a charity.” The opening ceremony for the ride will be a special one as AIDS/LifeCycle will have riderless bikes to honor those who have lost their battle to HIV/AIDS. Flores has been preparing for this ride by going to a spin class four days a week, called the Sweat Shop. He has taken a liking to spinning, as well as riding his bike on the weekend. With only one off day during the week that day being Wednesday. Flores’ donation page is helping spread the word for the cause. So far he has raised A renowned comic book writer George Perez donated to his donation page. Perez has a personal connection to the cause. His friend Patrick Anthony Crosby who died of AIDS, was a life cut to short. Flores said it would only be right if he rode for him throughout these seven days.

Flores had a goal of raising $10,000 and met that goal and raised more than he had anticipated getting $10,392 in donations in only six weeks. He said without the help and generosity of the Rio Hondo staff and their donations meeting this goal would not be possible and he is forever grateful for them. Counseling receptionist, Patricia Castillo said “ I love it! It’s nice to have someone that takes the time to help others and I love that he has met his donation goal.” The money will help those suffering from HIV and AIDS in the LGBTQ community. The mission of the ride is to provide free HIV/AIDS medical care, testing, and prevention services to San Francisco AIDS Foundation and the Los Angeles LGBT Center. As well as reduce new HIV infections and improve quality of life for people living with HIV/AIDS. Flores is looking forward to day five of the race which is red dress day. The cyclist wear red during the ride to commemorate those who have died and celebrate their life. The mission of the ride is to provide free HIV/AIDS medical care, testing, and prevention services to San Francisco AIDS Foundation and the Los Angeles LGBT Center. When they cross the finish line they will be hearing the chants of many the pride parade. The AIDS/LifeCycle started in 1993 and has raised over $200 million and has had 42,000 riders participating in the journey from San Francisco to Los Angeles. When comparing the past years, this semesters( and year) has been larger than most, with an influx of new recruits joining the program weekly. Over said period, the team has accumulated dozens of awards - achieved by a teaching style that focuses on self development and education rather than awards and

This was not a chance, this was not a fluke, this was not a accident, but rather a combined effort by a group of exemplary students that is going to be repeated again and again…” With this mentality, the team has done well, not only with its award record but with its students as well. Many of them have graduated and transferred to universities based on their achievements in the field. Team captain Edward Minasyan spoke on the success of the team and growth of it since his involvement. “ I feel like everybody sort of working together and being really cool with each other, that the support system was there. Nakamura and his family were taken from their home in El Monte and incarcerated in an internment camp in Arizona. They were interned for “no particular reason” other than being Japanese-Americans. Nakamura likened the experience to being a prisoner of war. In 1942, Nakamura was drafted into the war and became a member of the

all-Japanese-American 442nd Regimental Combat Team. He’s proud of the fact that this unit is the most highly decorated unit in U.S. military history. “Even though I came in late, I was still a part of it.” Despite the incarceration of many Japanese-Americans, Nakamura felt that this was a “teaching moment” for the country.

He was especially proud of the fact that the people who were incarcerated did so “with a great deal of grace.” “If there are lies that are being circulated as truth, or exaggerations of small incidents, be very suspicious,” he noted. “Look into these rumors that are floating about.” Christina Almanza, who’s the Senator Chair of the Cultural Diversity Club at Rio

The Vagina Monologues

At Rio Hondo College

“ ... An emotional, yet inspirational, play that Without a doubt made an impact to many of the audience members one way or another.” ASHLEY LOZANO Reporter

ashley.lozano1408@my.riohondo.edu

“The Vagina Monologues” was an empowering play that left guests and students with awareness of what real women go through in life, while also praising the word “vagina”. The play took place at the Wray Theater, January 31 at 7p.m. The hour-long play covered a variety of topics including rape, sexual assault, and body empowerment. With the seriousness of these topics, they still managed to add comedic aspects to what was being said, which gave the normally “uncomfortable” topics a better and relate-able understanding. The play was divided into 15 different monologues, as each girl stood up to talk on the Mic, every monologue became more real and more serious.

VINCENT FRANCO / EL PAISANO NEWS One part of the Fifteen “Vagina Monologues” was a five minute presentation given to the audience, of the various orgasms a women can experience. This one was the “Please don’t stop” Orgasm. Although they made jokes to lighten the mood, what was being said were real stories of experiences many women have went through. From the tone of their voices to their hand movements, the words coming out of their mouths left you speechless. It left you feeling exactly what they were feeling. These women did an amazing job trying to get the audience to feel the real emotion behind what they were saying. They talked about things people are too embarrassed or too scared to talk about. They made women feel like they are not alone and that having a vagina isn’t something that should devalue you.

“Personally I want the audience to get out that vagina’s are important, that women are important and we should view every aspect of a woman. Especially things that happen to woman, rape or other things like mutilation in other countries. We live in a patriarchal society so women are still demeaned to being less than. I think we should take back the word vagina and especially the word cunt and reword it,” said cast member and Rio Hondo student, Valeria Gomez, after being asked what she wanted the audience to take away from what was being said in the monologues. Numerous times throughout the play the cast made it a point that the word ‘vagi-

na’ isn’t a word that people should be embarrassed about. It should actually be a word that should be said proudly and without a bit of shame. The stories, “Hair” and “Because he liked to look at it,” truly represented that women should not feel belittled for having a vagina, instead they should embrace it and show confidence in what they have no matter the shape or size. The “My Angry Vagina” monologue got the audience in a laughing outburst with what Gomez was expressing about what vagina’s have to go through. This monologue truly captured the humor that they wanted to put off while also

getting the message across. Audience member and former Rio Hondo Student, Naomi Cortez, enjoyed the play saying, “I enjoyed the variety of humor and the complex and almost triggering stories but realistic stories. It was a good flow, no pun intended.” “The Vagina Monologues” left every women proud to be themselves and every man with a better idea of what women go through because of their sex. It was definitely an emotional, yet inspirational, play that without a doubt made an impact to many of the audience members one way or another.

Queer Visibility Day DIANA JUAREZ Managing Editor Diana.juarez8805@my.riohondo.edu

Rio Hondo’s Queer Initiative hosted Queer Visibility Day at the student union April 3rd, 2019. Siblings and hosts of the podcast Café Con Chisme, Yasmin and Sebastian Ferrada, joined students for an afternoon of “chisme” with a side of education and a dash of heart to heart storytelling that ended with a couple of rounds of Joteria. “The purpose of Queer Visibility is to show students that representation matters. To show that we ARE here. Many times there isn’t representation of the LGBTQ+ community and if there is it’s through cishet (cisgender heterosexual) actors. Having Cafe con Chisme at Rio Hondo was amazing,” said Christina Almanza, student senator to Cultural Diversity with the Associated Students of Rio Hondo College (ASRHC). Almanza, along with help from Magdalena Munoz, advisor to Student Life and Leadership, and the Cultural Diversity task force helped organize the event. Students got the opportunity to ask important questions both in regard to the queer identity and to how podcasting works. At times, the questions were hard hitting and emotional.

One student shared their experience about coming out and being told by their mother that they would be sent to conversion therapy. This was something that both Ferrada siblings felt strongly against, stating their disapproval for conversion therapy and offered their apologies for what the student had gone through. “[Coming out] is a process, it is a journey. My parents supporting me was also a process. I think that every year we’re kind of growing and getting to do a little bit better. So, for folks who are either in that stage of not being sure how to come out or have just come out and have gotten really negative response. I know it’s hard and it’s really painful, but finding folks who can be your chosen family during that time will be very helpful,” said Sebastian. “For us, having to push back and having to say things that makes folks feel uncomfortable is empowering to those who need it to be empowering...It’s necessary for us with identities that are marginalized to have these conversations even if it makes people feel uncomfortable,” said Yasmin. Haily Hernandez, a chair for Sustainability with ASRHC, shared her thoughts on the importance of events like this one. “Queer events bring the

The Santa Ana winds could not stop Riopalooza, Wednesday, April 10, from blowing

away a wonderful show. The concert lasted between 11 a.m. and two p.m. , taking place in the lower quad near the LRC building - the festival area filled with activity

booths and places to grab snacks with a food truck on standby. “I saw all kinds of people looking on, or walking by at first but then stop and walk

over to one of the booths and view the performances.” Jason Reyes Firetech major and Center Chairman for campus engagement for ASRHC said when asked about his thoughts on the turn out of the event. Reyes stated that he was overall really happy about the aesthetics and the turn out for Riopalooza. “I wanted Riopalooza this year to have bubbles, have that spring feeling you know? Kind of to match with the 70s hippy theme I was going for.” Stated by Jason Reyes. The lower quad was filled with balloons and stations pumping out bubbles like a scene out of feel like a colorized modern version Woodstock. Spectator Janet Valdez stated that she really loved the live performances and the food truck they brought. “This event is really colorful and I like the Tie Dye booth.” Valdez said when asked about what she thought of the theme of Riopalooza this year. “This was so fun, so colorful and such a great day to be out here like this!” Cassandra Torres, a music major that sang “Somebody to Love” by Queen during the event. She stated that because

of her 11 year background in singing, she loves to challenge herself and chose that song to do that. There was even a lip-syncing competition that the Band from the ACT (Artists Creating Theater) club placed first in with their performance of Don’t Stop Believing by Journey. Student Jonah Collazo ,Member of the club and theatre major, that performed during the competition said that they choose this song because everyone “knows” Journey and thus easy to just get into it. Collazo and her bandmates expressed that how they really enjoyed Riopalooza this year with it having a bigger crowd than last time and plan to participate next year.

While the idea of Riopalooza is relatively new, it’s really taken to the student body, with a larger response each year its been on campus.

Tim Conway, the comedian who entertained fans all over the world with his performances in “The Carol Burnett Show” and “30 Rock” passed away Tuesday morning in Los Angeles. Conway’s publicist, Howard Bragman, announced to CNN that Conway had been dealing with an illness before his passing. He was 85.

With a career spanning over 100 credits in film and television, Conway exemplified versatility as an actor and a writer. The inception of his fame came in 1962 when he starred in “McHale’s Navy,” a comedy centered around a group of soldiers aboard a PT boat during World War II. Conway’s character, Ensign Charles Parker, portrayed a colorful, heartwarming klutz in the series. Towards the late 60’s, Conway starred in “The

Carol Burnett Show.” The show, which offered a variety of skits at the hands of Carol Burnett, Vicki Lawrence, and Conway, ran from 1967 to 1978. Conway won four Emmys and a Golden Globe throughout his tenure on the show, including an Emmy for contributing to the writing of the show. Guildhall E-Sports Bar Opens in Uptown Whittier

Editor-In-Chief noah.garcia3720@my.riohondo.edu

There has alway been a tough choice to make: whether to stay home in a comfortable environment and relax or go out into the world and socialize. Now you can have the best of both worlds, as the Guildhall E-Sports Bar just opened in Uptown Whittier. Opening May 10, The establishment has created a relaxing atmosphere for those who want the comfort of home but also want the experience of going out. The uptown bar has branded itself as “geek centric” with amenities being catered to said audience. First stepping into the place, you’re greeted by a bright, warm open space paired with wooden furnishings. The aesthetic is a combination of Basement hangout and Guildhall essentially

functions as a gastropub, serving high end drinks and food at a moderate price. The food ranges from appetizers and sandwiches with the drinks including all craft cocktails, and rotation of craft beer with local drinks on tap. They also have over 180 board games to choose from (with 80 more currently on their way), ranging from Monopoly to Settlers of Catan. The number of games increases each day as customers can request new ones to be added to their collection. There are several screens around the bar which play movies, twitch streams, gaming tournaments etc. They can also stream up to three different games at a time; where the customer has the ability to request what they want to watch. Spencer Cox, the owner and operator of the business, addressed the accommodations his bar

offers to its customers, “If a group of people come in, and they want to watch something specific, by all means- we love to accommodate … If you wanted to come in, let’s say that there’s a smash brothers event going on, you absolutely can ask for that stream and we’d happily put it on.” The Whittier location is the second one, with the original being in Burbank. This idea first came about several years ago, while he was a general manager of an Italian restaurant. One day, he hustled over to Dave and Busters in Arcadia because of the League of Legends world tournament that was happening at the time, and loved the atmosphere. “My roommate and I would sit down with a pack with a couple of Coronas and watch E-Sports on TV at home and every day we’d be

like: why isn’t this a place we can go and see and go to a bar. Why do I have to stay at home and enjoy [a place] that my friends that like the NBA of the NFL: they get to go see the games with their friends. That’s where the idea started to build,” says Cox. The Burbank location is about to hit their two year mark this summer in July. While the start up took time, his years of experience helped him and his team build a strong, reliable customer base that grows to this day. When looking for a place to set down the second location; Whittier fit the bill. This being the fact that it’s close to a community that fits the bar demographic, as well as it being one that welcomes new businesses. While he had concerns that people wouldn’t be into the idea, it’s become clear that there is a need for this type of service in the community.

“I think that there’s a social aspect of playing board games: that’s why we let big groups come in. The cool thing is, if you host it at your house there’s a bunch of clean up, you don’t have to do that here.” Guildhall Esports bar located at 6741 Bright Ave. Whittier CA, 90601 and is open from 5pm to 12am through Monday to Friday and 11am to 12am Saturdays and Sundays.

LP’s Sold Out Wiltern Concert Was Not Lost On Us

DIANA JUAREZ / EL PAISANO NEWS LP and her touring band wowed fans as she took the stage for one of the last scheduled concerts of her Heart to Mouth tour. Fans went crazy as she sang through some of their favorite songs. DIANA JUAREZ Managing Editor

diana.juarez8805@my.riohondo.edu

LP brought the sold out Wiltern to its feet during her unforgettable homecoming concert March 9. After a rocky start to the first leg of her “Heart to Mouth” tour when illness forced her to reschedule a handful of concerts early on, LP recovered and brought over 1,500 people to their feet. Dedicated fans from all over the world congregated at The Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles starting around noon this past Saturday. From Italy to Texas, France to Mexico, LP’s fans treated each other more like family as they shared stories about the first time they heard her sing. “This is my first time seeing her,” said Nancy Elizabeth Aguiar, an LP fan from Baja California, Mexico, “I just love her so much and I had to make the trip up here. We drove all the way from Ensenada just to see her.” Loaded down with gifts and letters for their favorite musician, fans braved the cold L.A. evening. Always approachable, LP has a very close relationship with her fans and the meet-andgreet VIP tickets sell out just as often as her concerts themselves do. Brenda Ro and her sister, Karina Ro Cruz, drove from San Diego to see the show. While Cruz is an avid fan of LP’s, Ro was more of a casual listener who quickly fell in

love with LP’s power vocals. “We couldn’t get the VIP but we brought her something,” said Cruz, “we gave our gift to someone in the VIP line so we really hope she gets it.” This type of dedication isn’t strange at all considering the caliber of artist that LP is. The New York native, L.A. based singer songwriter has had many hits and misses in her career that began in the late 90’s. Although she received plenty of positive reviews from critics, her early albums didn’t gain enough traction at the beginning. LP went on to sign with multiple record labels and co-wrote songs with famous musicians including Rihanna, Christina Aguilera, and even Cher. Her songs have been featured in popular shows such as Orange Is The New Black, Shades of Blue, and Sense8. It wasn’t until her single, “Lost on You,” made the radio in Greece back in late 2016 that LP’s career took a turn for the better. She has played late night shows such as David Letterman, Jimmy Fallon, and Conan O’brien. With her signature whistle and undeniable swagger, LP drove the crowd wild at The Wiltern as she danced from one end of the stage to the other. Not even a literal and accidental mic drop was enough to stop the electric performance. From upbeat dance music to heart wrenching break up songs, LP kept her captivated

audience entertained with her versatility and undeniable talent. Even the opening acts for this tour were brilliant. With bands such as The Years, Slug, and Lauren Ruth Ward, LP’s fiancée and an amazing singer songwriter in her own right, the tour was a hit. After the show, fans quickly opened Instagram to see if the singer had posted to her account a video of all the gifts she received, hoping to see their own gifts showcased. “...Thank you LA and @thewiltern for such an amazing night wow!! What an amazing home town audience!!” Posted LP to her instagram. A sentiment

she repeated throughout the show. LP’s infectious charisma, mind blowing vocals, and heartfelt lyrics attract people of all ages, making her rising star one to keep an eye out. There is no doubt about it, as if the string of sold out shows across the west coast weren’t enough, LP’s larger than life stage presence will keep fans wanting more. The concert closed out with one of fans all-time favorite, “Lost on You,” which the audience belted out along with LP. It was an echo to her show at the Observatory in Santa Ana, when LP was too sick to finish the song and the audience gladly took over for her.

To say that the show at The Wiltern more than made up for any perceived disappointment is an understatement as LP delivered far and beyond anyone’s expectations. If you’re not familiar with her music you should definitely check her out, and if you see her walking around L.A. with her dog, Orson, just wave “hi.” She might even let you pet him. Her tour will be taking her around the world for the next few months but people will get a chance to experience her at the Ohana festival in Dana Point.

DIANA JUAREZ / EL PAISANO NEWS LP played a sold out Wiltern Theater March 9, 2019 during one of the last few shows of her Heart to Mouth tour in the U.S. before she heads to Mexico and Europe for a string of music festivals.

Shakespearean Absurdities Brought to Life

RHC’s Performing Arts Department Presents: A Comedy of Errors NOAH GARCIA Editor-in-Chief

noah.garcia3720@my.riohondo.edu

There’s a negative stigma attached to the works of Shakespeare: Dry arid and tedious: Rio’s Performing Arts program stabs at this notation and brings life to the lines of the immortal Bard. Friday April 26 was the Opening Night for A Comedy of Errors, a William Shakespeare comedy featuring Giorgio Spelvino sponsored by William Korf. Korf teaches acting and theatre history at Rio Hondo, with Spelvino being a Shakespearean scholar and a contributor of the event. This event was hosted in the Black Box Theatre on campus, and arena-esqe staging using simple but defining props and costumes. The set was one big stage with two movable columns, with the front of a home built with a two story access with windows to dramatically close and open. The play itself was one of Shakespeare’s earliest plays, Set in Ephesus Greece, revolving around servant twins separated at birth and the commotion it causes when their parties meet for the first time. This is the crux

of all of the mishaps that occur within the 24 hour time frame the play fills. Matt Schleicher, an instructor in theatre arts at Rio Hondo, spoke on the reasoning behind choosing Shakespeare for these students, many of which are dealing with the bard for the very first time. “It challenges these students to really work on their acting craft … whenever you provide a challenge to the actor they usually rise to the occasion,” said Schleicher. And these students, experienced and new, have risen and really pulled it off. The prose of each actor was fantastic, sprouting lines filled with such bright bouncy energy. This is paired with fantastic physicality that helped form the world that these actors tried to convey. Because of the lack of certain props/costumes etc, the acting really had to work just right to create and instill the Shakespearean atmosphere. Which they were successfully able to do. Schleicher also described the process the students and faculty go through when understanding and interpreting the piece. “The analysis of the

The rest of the dates for the show are May 2, 3 and 4 at 8pm - with a special 2pm performance closing the show on May 5. LIFESTYLES Stand-up Routine, But in Literary Form ANAMARIA APARICIO Lifestyles Editor

anamaria.aparicio8532@my.riohondo.edu

“To be honest, I don’t think I write with any inspiration, because anything I’m “inspired” to do, I never complete. Inspiration, for me, is always short-lived and never completed; kind of like New Year’s resolutions. Rather, what kept me writing was basically the need to get the stories out of me. “ Hector G. Gonzalez is a professor at Rio Hondo College, where a lot of his classes consist of the Mexican and Mexican American culture. Not only does Gonzalez teach at Rio Hondo, but he’s also an author and most recently released his book, The Mexican Red Blanket. The Mexican Red Blanket is what he considers a stand-up routine, but in literary form. Unlike his previous book Flying Blue Tacos, the stories in this book are stand alone. Although they are both written in style of a stand-up routine, Flying Blue Tacos was written with stories that followed into one another. Plus the topics for Flying Blue Tacos was specifically with topics he can bring up in class, as it is one of the books he requires to read in his Mexican- American course. “Also, the Taco book had many topics of discussion that come up during class: Why do Chicanos glorify Che, and not one of their own? What is a Chicano? What is Mexican-American art? Should MEChA change their name? Is “Si Se Puede” a chant that has lost its value? Others as well. The Red Blanket stories aren’t so serious. Well, there are a couple ones that make one think.” said Gonzalez. When also asked what he

“Like the thought occurred to me, as I was getting my Mexican blankets out on a cold night, that I’ve never seen a yellow Mexican Blanket. I mean an old one, not a new one you can buy at the border or downtown LA.” hopes the readers get out of his new book, his answer was simple“That’s an easy question; a good laugh.” For Gonzalez, writing his book in a comical way comes natural for him. It’s who he is as a person. Whether its at home with his family and friends, or at school in his classroom. Although he is aware that once the humor dies down, the stories have underlying topics that can be discussed. Gonzalez doesn’t try to force himself to write. His stories have to flow naturally out of him as well as being able to manage time in order to complete the book. “It does get challenging to write, work and having a family. But it’s all about managing time. When I take my daughter to the dentist, I’ll take work or the stories to work on. And like I said earlier, if the stories aren’t coming out of me – I won’t force it; so that give me more time for family and work.” But his inspiration for these book come from moments or situations that come to mind and that he finds funny. The ones that catch his attention the most and have him say “that’s funny’ are usually the ones he ends up writing about. Like this new book, he stated that it was something that just came into mind while looking for a blanket. “Like the thought occurred to me, as I was getting my Mexican blankets out on a

cold night, that I’ve never seen a yellow Mexican Blanket. I mean an old one, not a new one you can buy at the border or downtown LA. So, that thought turned into The Red Mexican Blanket” Another story that he says came from one if his thoughts was, “ I’ve always had a fear of pulling up next to a cholo at a red light and being mistaken for a white guy by the cholo, and him shooting me. So that turned into a story; a story, by the way, that many students can relate to I came to find out.” The process for writing The Mexican Red Blanket did take him a couple of years. “Life” gets in the way and the process of editing is the hardest part. To him writing is the easiest, but once it gets to rereading and making sure everything is perfect, it’s the most miserable part. “The process of writing the book was easy on one hand, and painstakingly slow, laborious and miserable on the other hand. What I mean is that the stories easily flow out; they kind of write themselves. That’s the easy part, the fun part. The miserable part, the part that takes way longer is editing and rewriting the stories over and over.” He doesn’t add to the stories, but instead takes away words and changes words here and there. Then has to leave the stories for a while to get “fresh eyes.” The same goes for writers block, if the stories aren’t coming out naturally, he

Go CampingLuckily, Los Angeles is in the middle of many campsites that people can choose from within a two-hour drive. From campsites in Big Bear Mountain to Joshua Tree, camping is a perfect and affordable activity to do during the summer. A weekend in nature is definitely a great way to sit back, relax, and take a breath-

er from the usual stress of living in LA. Take a day trip to Catalina IslandNot many people take advantage of the hour long boat ride to Santa Catalina Island. Departing from three different locations, a one-way trip costs about $40. Once on the island, there are many outdoor activities one can do to make the trip an adventure. From zip-lining, hiking trails, and snorkeling, spending the day in Catalina Island will for

sure be an eventful trip. Watch a movie on a rooftopSpend a summer night watching a movie on a rooftop cinema. The Rooftop Cinema club offers movies throughout the entire summer at a cost of $17-$24. Each ticket comes a choice of a comfortable lounge or love chair and bottomless popcorn and drinks. They feature classic movies like Grease and Breakfast at Tiffany’s and more recent movies like Bohemian Rhapsody and A

Star in Born. Ride a bike through several beachesRental bikes are easily found at the beach and are a great way to enjoy the ocean breeze while getting a good workout done. With the variety of bikes to choose from, setting up a speaker with your favorite songs, riding through the bike lanes while watching the sunset is a great way to spend the day at the beach. Ride from Santa Monica Pier

to Venice beach or Huntington Beach to Newport beach. Go to a theme parkSounds like a typical way to spend a summer day, but you can never go wrong with visiting a theme park. If going to a common theme park like Disneyland or Knotts Berry Farm feels repetitive, a water park is also a fun alternative that will for sure cool you down. Hurricane Harbor and Knott’s Soak City are great options to spend a hot afternoon by a pool.

Rio Hondo College surpassed their goal of donating 500 blankets to the homeless after pairing up with the organization, Blankets of Hope. Learning Disabilities Specialist at the Disabled Student Program and Services department, Jose Arroyo, helped organize the event that took place on campus last month. Students, faculty, and staff at Rio had the opportunity to write short letters of inspiration and encouragement to the homeless, the letters were then attached to a blanket. The blankets were handed out to the homeless in Skid Row in downtown Los Angeles. Arroyo had originally asked for 115 blankets from the organization to be sent to him as part of his contribution. However, when he presented the idea to Rio’s students, faculty, and staff, everyone was excited about the cause and wanted to be involved as well.

Arroyo quickly ordered more blankets to be sent to the school and they went to work writing down the short inspirational letters. The nonprofit organization, Blankets of Hope, had an overall goal of reaching 10,000 blankets and with Rio’s help in donating 500 blankets, they officially reached their goal. It was a great group effort from all students and staff that were involved. The tutors in the Learning Assistance Center helped greatly for attaching the hundreds of handwritten notes to the blankets. There was a positive reaction from all the homeless recipients after they were donated the blankets. Word had spread throughout the homeless community about the blanket donations, that many were trying to get their hands on them. “Hey, it’s Blanket Man!”, a man yelled to Arroyo upon seeing him when he arrived to pass out the blankets. “We touched so many grateful souls that were so appreciative to receive the

blankets with the inspirational notes. They loved hearing it was written by students”, Arroyo said. “I always made an effort to ask for their name since most of them had not heard their own name said

out loud in a very long time. That small gesture assisted them in humanizing them once again after being overlooked by society.” Rio Hondo staff, faculty, and students appreciate

what Arroyo has done. If you want to help those in need or would like to donate much needed supplies, please visit the Rio Source Room.

Tips On Studying

jesus.manriquez9661@my.riohondo.edu

Let’s be honest, studying is one of the most challenging things to do in college. Many of us do not know how to study. We sit and read whatever we are reading and feel like we understand it and that’s it. We think that studying is a complex process, but in reality it is more simple than we think. Here are some simple tips to study better in college. 1.Take Better Notes Before you get to the studying part, you need to make sure you are taking good notes. If you take messy or bad notes, then you already have a problem. It is much more difficult to study something that you can’t even read or follow along. Taking better notes will make it easier to read and comprehend. All of us have opened our notes and realized we can’t even understand our own writing, good organized note taking will make it so much easier. 2.Do Not Over Study Just because you spend a lot of time staring at your notes or books doesn’t mean you’re learning. If you feel like you’ve lost track and find yourself stressed, take a break. Studying for hours will just make your brain tired, take a break for an hour or more if you need it, go outside,do your thing and then go back to studying. A relaxed mindset will make it easier

VINCENT FRANCO/ EL PAISANO NEWS for you to absorb information. 3.Be Organized Plan out everything that you need to get done each week. Make sure to space out work in the best possible way so that you do not have to deal with too much in a short period of time. The worst thing you can do is to try and absorb all the information needed for multiple classes the night before. Make a calendar or a planner that will

help you stay on track. Sometimes we forget we have a test two days from now and try to learn chapters worth of work in two days. Organization is one if not the most important thing you can do in college. 4.Practice Practice Practice The best way to learn something is to practice it over and over again until you get it right. Whatever it is that you need to learn, practice it until

you become an expert on it. Just like when you get your license or learned how to ride a bike, practice does make perfect. Sometimes teaching or helping someone else in the same problem will help you absorb the information better. 5.Study In Groups Multiple brains are better than one. Sometimes we just can’t manage to understand things, and when we study

alone, it feels almost impossible to understand it. Assembling study groups will help make it so much easier to learn things. When you study with multiple people, you help each other, there will always be someone out there that knows something you don’t. Working with multiple people isn’t just beneficial for studying but also for homework. Multiple brains can always get through anything.

WESTBROOK SAYS GOODBYE TO NIPSEY HUSSLE The death of rapper Nipsey Hussle reverberated through all of Los Angeles and transcended into a worldwide recognition of one of the most iconic hip hop artists of recent years. Nipsey Hussle, who’s real name is Ermais Asghedom, was gunned down Sunday, March 31 outside of his clothing store in Crenshaw, The Marathon Clothing. Hussle was an inspiration to most in South Los Angeles. His humanitarian work for youth city kids and the community around his home town was in full description from other celebrities around the world. None less emotional than the incredible triple-double Oklahoma City Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook put up just two days after his close friend’s death. Westbrook grew up in similar conditions to Hussle. The UCLA Basketball standout grew up in Long Beach and became close friends with Hussle after appearing in community work for each other’s charities. Shortly after the start of their friendship, Westbrook found himself dedicating his 20-20-21 statical numbers against the Los Angeles Lakers April 2 to Nipsey post-game. “That’s for Nipsey, that’s for Nipsey,” Westbrook said after recording the final rebound.

RIO BEACH HITS THE SAND FOR CONFERENCE IGNACIO CERVANTES Sports Editor

Following an exceptional start to the season, the Rio Hondo beach volleyball team has endured through a tough March. Friday, March 15 saw the Lady Roadrunners lose its seventh straight match despite starting the season 5-0. The team’s 5-0 loss to El Camino College Friday meant the team’s record will now see it at 5-7 which is a big turn from the record in February. Luckily for coach Teddi Esko and her girls, the team has a chance to get to .500 with a couple of games this week that can right the ship. First up for Rio Hondo beach is a trip to Fullerton College tomorrow. The record for the Fullerton College Hornets isn’t too appealing as a 3-15 mark sees them at the bottom of their division. FELIPA MORENO SIGNS TO MILLS COLLEGE

IGNACIO CERVANTES Sports Editor

ignacio.cervantes8813@my.riohondo.edu

Wednesday, May 1, life became larger than volleyball for Rio Hondo College sophomore athlete, Felipa Moreno. The communications and business major signed her commitment away to Mills College, a private women’s liberal arts university in Oakland, Calif. to continue her volleyball career and begin the next phase in her education. Upon graduating from Pioneer High School in the summer of 2016, Moreno was heavily recruited by both women’s volleyball head coach Teddit Esko and women’s soccer coach Jennifer Tanaka. Ultimately, Tanaka won her over and Moreno featured on the Roadrunners soccer

roster as a goalkeeper for her freshman season. After redshirting for both volleyball programs, the communications and business major finally found herself on the court with coach Esko’s volleyball team in the fall of 2016. “It’s been a road for her,” Esko said. “Going from this sport to this sport and so forth, it’s been really fun to see that it’s coming to a head in a postive way.” All that hard work and a little bit of a rocky road was worth it for Moreno who is preparing to move miles away from home and finally get what her coaches and teammates feel the ex-Pioneer student deserves. Despite Moreno leaving her family for a new adventure, Moreno mentioned that a lot of what she has accomplished will go down as an

win for her and her family as well. “They’re really supportive with everything I do,” Moreno said about her parents Griselda and Rito Moreno. “So when it comes to me leaving them, they are OK with it.” As for why Oakland, Moreno said it was time for her to break out of her shell she’s been comfortable in so far. The Mills College recruit felt that she knew everyone around here, so “I want something new for myself.” The next few years at Mills, Felipa will be on for a challenge which she feels she’s ready for. Beach volleyball couples

partner Denyse Perez, who will be transeferrring to Cal Poly Pomona to study hospitality, mentioned Felipa’s competitiveness will keep her on the right path. “Her goal is to win no matter what,” Perez said. “That’s why I know for a fact that when she transfers out I think it’s gouing to go great for her at Mills.” Moreno mentioned that her drive and chosen journey were a product of coach Esko’s guidance throughout the Mills-bound student-athlete’s time at Rio. The 17-year Rio coach has always harped on making sure her athletes don’t forget what the real goal in life is while on her programs: a degree. “She believes in every one of us,” Moreno said. “Throughout the years I learn something from her and she’s all about having an education and a future.” At Mills College Moreno will feature in the Cyclones women’s indoor volleyball program coached by Jack Cowden. Moreno will also be studying business and communications to fulfill Griselda and Rito’s lifelong dream of owning a Mexican mariscos restaurant. The soccer, beach and indoor volleyball player featured in a total six seasons as a Roadrunner athlete. Soccer 2016, Beach 2017-Soccer 2016, Beach 2017-19, and indoor 2018-19.

NOAH GARCIA / EL PAISANO NEWS

Although homelessness has decreased 17 percent in 2017, as stated 2018 Homeless Plan released by Whittier, the 204 sheltered/unsheltered individuals are persistent - With the city that they call their home taking steps forward and backward in the past several years in order to help this downtrodden group of people. This image is taken right before the cleaning of the Whittier green belt, alongside Mar Vista Street.

The Future of Whittier’s Homeless While the amount of homeless Individuals has decreased, the issue remains at large. NOAH GARCIA Editor-in-Chief noah.garcia3720@my.riohondo.edu

It’s midday and the sun is bright and the wind is flowing- acutely accompanied by the drone of the traffic building up along Whittier boulevard. You stop at the light between Mar vista St. and Whittier Boulevard, where a homelessness encampment resides parallel to you. Shopping carts, umbrellas, tents and blankets are the prime constructs of this public residence, one which stays the same size no matter how close or far you are to it. Turning onto Mar Vista, going through the uptown area, the displaced individuals claim the sidewalks as their residence, for at least a little while. That moment in time is now gone, as the residents of the Whittier Greenbelt have been cleared out by a combination of law enforcement, social services and Caltrans , April 22, 2019. With the 38 tent community disassembled, many of the residents have been sent off, either on their own accord or to accept Whittier Area First Day two month hotel vouchers. It’s been weeks since the clean out and Whittier has already begun plans to make sure such an encampment would never form again. Council members Henry Bouchot and Cathy Warner, officials in the committee to tasked with overseeing the city’s homelessness action plan. Bouchot spoke to El Paisano on the current Homeless situation in the city.

NOAH GARCIA / EL PAISANO NEWS A homeless individual on the corner of Greenleaf Ave and Mar Vista St. In front of Garcia’s Fresh Meat Market, April 29th, 2019. While the cleaning of parks have displaced a lot of these unsheltered individuals, This person has taken a long refuge at this bus stop. “ One of the things I’ve noticed is that the public and the government and the service have a different time table than those who serve the homeless. They recognize that you have meet people where they are, to take time and create trust, and you have to find creative ways to get them homes…” While the idea of homelessness is cut and dry( without a home), the reason for said issue is wildly complex ,stemming from economical and personal issues. Solving the problem is even more complex, as so many sides that all strive for the same goal have different understandings and expectations than each other. Bouchot Spoke on how some people think it’s easy to just take an unsheltered individual to a shelter and that’ll solve the issue, but this perception is shortsighted. “ Some people have 32 traffic tickets, no drivers license, they got lice, untreated mental health issues,

substance abuse, trauma - if your a victim of sexual assault, I met a woman out in the encampment, she was the victim of rape- do you think she wants to live in a communal environment ? She tried once and started having nightmares ; so she went back to the streets.” The clearing of the Whittier greenbelt was preceded the April 11th clearing of

Parnell park, where another encampment was cleaned up due to community events and public safety. While homelessness has always been an issue, it has been harder for law enforcement to clear out areas due to a court decision last September. The case from Boise, Idaho had declared that a said that activities such as sleeping, are basic human rights of which

stopping said individual from doing so would be cruel and unusual punishment. Whittier California, as stated by the Los Angeles County Homeless Services Authority, accounted for 204 homeless individuals in the year of 2018. 73 of these peoples being unsheltered, with the remaining 23 residing in emergency shelters. While there has been a 20 percent decrease of the accounted population since 2016, the site does not record unsheltered youths ( 18-24) and is a statistical estimation based on a comprehensive census. These Finding helped to form the “City of Whittier Homeless Plan 2018-2021” , a plan adopted in July 2018 to decrease and eventually eliminate the amount of people designated as such. While the formal decision and plans have not been released to the public, the proposed plan can be found on the cities website. Whittier City council meets every second and fourth Tuesday of every month, in City Hall. You can Contact the City Clerk Department for additional information. While this issue is still being hotly debated, it’s undeniable that it’s one that shall affect the lives of these downtrodden peoples, as well as the city itself.

Breaking Ground on Transportation Station SAMUEL GARCIA Reporter

samuel.garcia8465@my.riohondo.edu

Tuesday, May 14, Rio Hondo College had a Groundbreaking Ceremony for Rio Plaza. Rio Plaza is an upcoming, updated bus stop facility for students. This plaza will feature amenities like restrooms and bicycle lockers for students

who take the bus. Not only that, but there will also be vending machines available for students, in addition to shade structures. This project has been in development for more than 10 years.Gary Mendez, Board of Trustees President for Rio Hondo College, was a former student at the college. During that time period,

he would ride his bike and take the bus to get to school. “We’re going to make it easier for students to transit from their home to campus,” he said. As a student, Mendez noted that his bike got stolen, which is why Rio Plaza will have bike lockers. Students will be able to access these lockers with special keys.

Rio Plaza will be located at the entrance of the school. It’ll act as a “new front” for the campus, one that is “more welcoming, more open.” One of the issues with the current transit systems is that they stop traffic during student pickups/drop offs. That won’t be the case with Rio Plaza. Mendez stated that they plan on cutting into the

sidewalk so the buses don’t stop the flow of traffic. James Parker, Director of Transportation for Norwalk Transit, stated that the transit system for Rio Plaza will feature electric buses, which means no harmful emissions. Not only that, but the new amenities will encourage more students to take the bus.

Friday May 17th Rio Hondo’s Careers in Technical Engineering program honored their first four year program’s graduating class for their success in earning a Bachelors in Science in automotive technology. The graduates were recognized and honored in the Au-

tomotive Technology building on campus. During the ceremony the Dean of Career Technical Engineering, Mike Slavich, and other professors spoke and congratulated their students. The graduates were also given their stoll that they will wear at Rio Hondo’s 56th commencement ceremony May 23rd. The Bachelor’s program was implemented back in

August 2016. There will be 16 students graduating from Rio Hondo with their Bachelors. Dean Slavich said that the numbers are higher than what they predicted for the program, “What we predicted, and promised the state, was 20 students by 2020, this year we have 16 graduating and hopefully 6-8 for 2020. Obviously we are well over

out goal and hope for 8-12 graduates every year after.” What is really special about the program is that 95% of the students within the program have full time jobs. “Because almost all of our students are full time workers, all of our classes were night and weekend courses,” said Slavich. Dean Slavich has been a full time faculty member at Rio Hondo College for 31 years and was one of the main creators of the automotive bachelors of science program. Colleague, Professor Steve Tomory, also helped as a pusher for the program. Dean Slavich believed that Rio Hondo had what it took to take their curriculum to the next level. “The reality is we both, [Pofessor Tomory and I] felt we had the capacity to have the four year program. When the program was still a two year we had the talent and machines to turn it into a four year,” said Slavich. This class will be the first 16 students to earn their 4 year degree from Rio Hondo college. Of those 16 there will also be the first and only female graduate, Perla Veloz. Veloz, like many of the students at Rio Hondo, faced many challenges. She got her associates from Bakersfield College, but before she was about to leave she found out that she was pregnant. Though that didn’t stop her from going to her 4 year she quickly realized she was going to need more help. Veloz found herself at Rio Hondo after a year away from home. With the 4 year degree program she will be able to finish off her goals and will open a lot of opportunities. “This program really helped me understand the electrical side of it. Like all the computers in the cars and how they communicate with each other,” said Veloz. She also knows that she

is working her way in a male dominated industry but that doesn’t scare her from working her best. “I don’t expect no different treatments. You have to assert yourself, and you can’t let anyone push you around,” said Veloz Professor Tomory always felt like he had a deeper connection with his students because like many of them he was a first generation college student. “I never even thought that I would go to college and then one degree turned into another and then another,” Tomory said. He went on to explain that he wanted to make this opportunity possible for his students. The biggest goal that this program hopes to accomplish for its students is turning them from blue collar workers into white collar. Dean Slavich said that, “Students will have the ability to have upward mobility within the companies that they already work with.” The program is hoping to grow in size and popularity after this year. Slavich also added that they hope to have students from other community colleges come to Rio Hondo after they finish with their 2 year degree programs. “We don’t want to take students from their programs where they have already completed a lot of credits. What we want is for them to gain their associates and once they have done so we will honor the credits here at the school and put it toward their degrees,” said Slavich. This program is a great opportunity for the school and for many students out there who cannot afford a cal state. Rio Hondo may be one of the first schools of many and maybe in the future there can be more 4 year degree programs at school!
