Delta Fire Scorches Cover 15,00 Acres in Less Than A Day LUIS GUTIERREZ Podcast Director
Luis.gutierrez0200@my.riohondo.edu
There’s been fires raging on in Northern California for some time now. Now, this current event took a toll that no one really expected. The Delta Fire had originally started as 3 different ones then merged into one fire. At one of the peaks of the fire it was covering one mile an hour. The Firefighters had been holding off the fire for some time. It was going great thanks to the temperature and humidity. But due to the embers flying everywhere they had to deal with random fires starting up. The winds in the area didn’t really help the fight either going to 15-20 mph, and the temperature
being roughly mid-90s. Experts are betting on the fire to move even further over the next 12 hours. It’s also expected to head east towards an area already affected by the Hiza fire. A 46,000 blaze that’s 75% contained. The Hiza fire is mostly in forest area, a good distance from any actual land with people. Unlike the Delta is now threatening areas where people reside. The Shasta County Sheriff issued a mandatory evaluation. On Wednesday the I-5 highway, had abandoned vehicles that caught flame, but many first responders were in the sence to help and reduce the damages cost by the fire. When the fire had started the police had sent some people to help direct traffic for people to get out.
After the Delta fire shut part of Interstate 5, truckers began taking a detour to the east.

Some of the present board members included Hilda L. Solis

When asked about the event and what its purpose was for, Solis was quoted, “The importance of having this event here in the San Gabriel Valley at Whittier Narrows is to bring foster youth transitional aid,” she continued to say, “it is for all foster kids as well as their parents and as well as the caregivers and with people that may come in contact with our county.” On the site there were 30 department heads available with information for young people regarding jobs. It has been said that many kids who transition out of foster youth families have difficul-

India’s Gay Sex Rights Uplifted from Ban September 6, 2018 will go down in history as the day India’s LGBTQ community celebrated their liberation of the Supreme Court’s standing of gay sex was made to lifted from the ban. In a very conservative country that holds more than 1.3 billion people will mark in day on how people will view gays and lesbians. India now looks to see how they will protect the rights of the LGBTQ community, and how the country’s perspective on their lifestyle will be accepted. Chief Justice Dipak Misra had this to say, “No one can escape from their individuality,” Misra goes onto say, “We have to bid adieu to prejudices and empower all citizens. Misra had made those comments on behalf of himself and 4 other judges in the Indian Supreme Court today. The giant ivory dome that is the central courtroom, was packed with many dozens of lawyers, plaintiffs, activists, and even some members of the public also managed their way inside. Some activists expressed their happiness by expressing their acceptance of their own existence thanks to this court order. This ruling decriminalized a past ruling in 2013 which sought to ban
homosexuality in the whole country of India. “Consensual sex between adults in [a] private space, which is not harmful to women or children, cannot be denied as it is a matter of individual choice,” the court stated, “Section 377 results in discrimination and is violative of constitutional principles.” The Supreme Court lawn was occupied by a crowd filled with many cheers of happiness and gratitude by young activists; some who even traveled afar to be there today to hear the court’s ruling of the matter. Many were seen in banners of rainbow-colored clothing taking selfies and celebrating in unison of their cultural freedom. Pride parades have started to become an epidemic in India since 2016 but are now seen to be common in several cities in India. Even in the largest city of Mumbai, a nonprofit group that advocates LGBTQ rights called the Humsafar Trust, decorated their office with a giant rainbow curtain and chanted cheers in their local language of Marathi, “A golden morning has dawned! Saturn’s Mysterious Hexagon Looks Mesmerizing ERIKA SUAREZ
Digital Editor-in-Chief
erika.suarez7619@my.riohondo.edu
NASA found a more detailed look at a hexagon located in Saturn’s northern pole, by its nifty spacecraft called Cassini. After 13 years in orbit around Saturn, the spacecraft found wavelengths from ultra-violet to the infrared using its Composite Infrared Spectrometer (CIRS). At the beginning of its mission it had a hard time gathering information because the northern stratosphere was too cold. It wasn’t until 2009, it gradually transitioned to the summer. According to NASA, a vortex was spotted by Cassini as the northern hemisphere nears summertime and the southern hemisphere sitting through winter. This mesmerizing vortex appears hexagonal, but not in its southern stratosphere. Matching a strange hexagonal cloud pattern that we see deeper down in Saturn’s at-

mosphere according to Leigh Fletcher of the University of Leicester. Who is also the lead author of the new study. Saturn’s odd asymmetry between north and south is an odd, but fascinating mystery that NASA continues to study. This Hexagon’s existence is nearly 38 years old. Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft kept an eye on it for decades since the 1980’s. At the time, studies found a long-lasting wave potentially tied to Saturn’s rotation. A type of phenomenon that was relatively close to Earth’s Polar Jet Stream, but this jet stream moves at about 200 mph (320 km/h). It’s intriguing to see Saturn’s jets stream shaped as a Hexagon that is unlike Earth’s jet stream. “The mystery and extent of the hexagon continue to grow, even after Cassini’s 13 years in orbit around Saturn,” said Linda Spilker, Cassini project scientist, “I look forward to seeing other new discoveries that remain to be found in the Cassini data.”
The Danger of DeepFake Videos ANAMARIA APARICIO Reporters
anamaria.aparicio8532@my.riohondo.edu
Today’s technology makes it easy to record a video and send it instantly to whoever you desire. Whether that be through text or social media. With the push of just one button it can be shown to one or hundreds of people. The dangers with such advancement in technology means that just as easy as it is to record a video, it is easy to manipulate one.
Deep fake videos have recently become a thing. A deep fake video is, as said by the Washington Post, “Deep fake video will be able to show people saying, with the authentic ring of their own voices, things they never said. It will show them doing things they never did, by melding their images with other video or creating new images of them from scratch.” Deep fake videos like this can cause turmoil within society. It can have everyone questioning what is and isn’t
real. The dangers of this can be tragic. With our political climate and deep fake videos, this can cause riots and trigger many people. It can ruin businesses and a person’s personal life. This is essentially gossip or what is called fake news. Making things seem like they happened when in reality it didn’t. Phone applications like Celebrity Voice changer makes it possible to record yourself or someone saying something and then change it to any celebrity voice they
have. This can help create a whole new video and let the public believe somebody really did say whatever was on that video. One of the biggest issues written by the Washington Post is, “For years, video has been the ultimate argument-settler. Online news outlets routinely hyperlink videos into stories to buttress the credibility of their reporting. Dash-cam video is often the clincher in claims of police malfeasance.” An issue like this is very
serious and the only reason something like this isn’t talked about much in society is because fake videos are not any wear near close to being perfect. This means that while people are still learning to perfect their skills in manipulating videos, those who specialize in technological development still have time to figure out a way to realize what videos are real and fake in the future.
Fortnite Getaway Review LUIS GUTIERREZ Podcast Director
luis.gutierrez0200@my.riohondo.edu
As everyone knows Fortnite is one of the biggest games around right now. Everyone and their mommas are playing this game. With every update Epic Games always tries to raise the bar and more than often they succeed in it. This time they try to do the same with the newest mode “The Getaway.” The new squad based
mode is pretty straightforward: Open the vault, get the jewel, a.k.a. the Llama and make it to the floating vans without dying. Just like a traditional squad the game is made up with 100 people in of course a squad of 4 or less. It’s pretty fast pace because the circle loads up almost immediately with a number of vault safes dropping in random locations just outside the circle. Giving you updates to when the jewel is picked up and where it is going at all times.
Whoever is carrying the jewel as long as they make it to the van the whole squad wins. Even if one squad gets away with the jewel the game doesn’t end for everyone. It comes to a complete end when all the jewels have been collected so if you miss the first one, go hunt down the other players before it’s too late. Since the mode does give you the circle almost immediately you can surely bet that there’ll be a good number of
people chasing after the jewel giving you almost no time to mine for materials. The way the game does makes up for it by allowing, all weapons blue grade and above so remember every shot counts. the grappling hook does call in for some fun escape routes and nice kills. Just like the game itself, it’s at it peak when playing with friends. The mode does get a little repetitive at times because it becomes a task of who can capture the jewel
the fastest. One of the biggest selling points was Epic saying this would be the next “Thanos” mode. Although the game is very fun, I think it’s not nearly on the same level as that. This mode is just like every other mode and is only going to be around for a limited time. Be sure to play and complete the challenges so you too can get that special loot before it’s gone!

Is the Pollution Affecting Your Math Skills? VINCENT FRANCO Photo Editor
vincent.franco2391@my.riohondo.edu
Breathing in polluted air may be causing you to become worse (or even more so) at math and other studies. This is according to a study at Peking University in Beijing conducted by Xiaobo Zhang and his colleagues, lasting between 2010-2014. The study followed around 31,955 people, all of the ages 10 and over, for about two years and found that the longer amount of time spent breathing in air containing nitrogen dioxide and sulphur dioxide pollution, the more effect it had on their test scores. Showing a decrease in scores. Math and vocabulary have had the most noticeable change. All the while age and genetic differences have been both taken into consideration. Those being tested were given 24 standardised math questions and 34 word-recognition questions. Language studies are affected more than math and
PHOTO ILLUSTRATION BY RAMON ALVARADO Students in Southern California who struggle with math may have the perfect excuse now: the pollution.
women are least affected than men. Some change can be seen in those of female brains but
it isn’t as significant. As an overall group, researchers like, Xi Chen, whos apart of the Yale research
team, claim that members of the study group have lost an entire year of education throughout the experiment.
Therefore those who are affected the most are older males, specifically over the age of 64, and the less educated males. This being because those who didn’t continue on with an education ultimately spent more time outdoors working in jobs such as construction, breathing in polluted air more often. This is an outstanding discovery, considering the fact that 90 percent of the human population is inhaling polluted air all throughout the globe. That’s every nine out of ten people across the globe. Asia and Africa as of 2018 are the most polluted. The dangerous effects of the pollution in our air have always been known, but have never been linked to long term brain damages. Diseases like dementia and premature deaths can all be linked to pollution. The study of pollution affecting our mental state is fairly new and has not come down to a solid conclusion.

Blizzard Entertainment’s newest video game title “Overwatch” is the company’s first dive into the first-person shooter genre. The game’s fast pace, variety of skill sets, and large skill gap allow for the best players to shine. This made the game very popular to eports players and tournaments were held as early as the game’s beta phase. Since then two years have passed and the inaugural season of the Overwatch League has just concluded. The multi-million dollar league was created by Blizzard to support Overwatch esports,
and gathers the best players from around the world. The inaugural season was a huge success and fans are eagerly awaiting it’s return in January. In the meantime, Blizzard’s 2nd annual tournament has kicked off; The Overwatch World Cup. This tournament has 24 countries from around the world form the best roster of players possible using only resident players. In the Overwatch League teams can sign players from any region, so the World Cup is all about regional pride. The tournament takes place over a period of four months starting with group stages. In this stage, six countries face off in a single round
robin with the top two teams in each group earning a spot to Blizzcon, Blizzard’s annual convention, for the final. In Incheon, South Korea the first group concluded with tournament favorites South Korea and underdogs Finland earning their spots to Blizzcon. From September 7th to the 9th, the second group saw teams Canada, Brazil, Austria, Switzerland, Norway, and USA face off for the next 2 spots. USA and Canada were the clear favorites and they proved that throughout the weekend. Between the two teams, only the US dropped a single map against Brazil. While the other countries showed high level play, professional experience from

USA and Canada put them on a whole other level. Both teams would even run unconventional strategies for the sole purpose of pleasing fans and flexing their skill level. Canada was undefeated and in first place going into the final match of the group stage. Despite this, the USA was the clear fan favorite in the sold out Blizzard Arena and professional analysts also believed them to be the favorites. The arena was electric, packed with American and Canadian jerseys and flags. Cheers filled the arena as the players took the stage. The match was a constant back and forth but, eventually team USA walked away the
victors. The stage was concluded and two more spots at Blizzcon were locked in. The Overwatch World Cup is a celebration of the diversity of esports. It gives all countries the opportunity to gather their best players and compete against the major regions. USA has made it clear that their only goal is to defeat two time champions South Korea. Now only two stages and four spots remain until the final at Blizzcon in Anaheim, CA. The remaining teams will meet in Bangkok, Thailand and Paris, France until the top 8 finally face off in November.

Hagop Najarian: Guiding Future Generations to Art JAIME APARICIO Arts and Entertainment Editor
jaime.aparicio2474@my.riohondo.edu
The art gallery located in the business building is now host to a special collection by artist Hagop Najarian. Arts and Cultural Programs Director Robert Miller, introduced Najarian Tuesday evening to a collecting crowd eager to witness the artist’s new line of work. Before handing over the microphone to Najarian, Director Miller explained that the gallery at Rio Hondo College isn’t just a place to display art, but to teach the visual appeal of art as well. Najarian would then come before the crowd and give a little backstory to his beginnings in art and his peculiar style of creativity. Najarian would go on to say that he studied at Fullerton College and specified just how community colleges are just as important as fouryear schools and that the skill to create any kind of art comes from the inside rather than the teachings of a professor or a textbook. He mentioned that for those willing to be taught by him, that they themselves can attend his classes in color theory and painting at Cerritos College. Najarian’s work displayed in the art gallery is titled “Atonal Chromatics” and is best described as a line of work that plays on the form of colors and how they complement each other. He also emphasized that the use of playing music in the background helps him think and create his drawings and paintings. Najarian says that the method of creating paintings with the use of multiple colors and brushes resembles that of creating music with their layers of instruments and tonal sounds. As it may be obvious, Najarian is also a musician but his dedica-
tion is to his craft as an artist and clarifies it as a full-time job, working from nine to five on a daily basis. His collection of chromatics is a culmination of a year and a half of work and is quite contempt of the end result. His paintings and drawings were created from his residence in Torrance, California and were again influenced by his love and appreciation of music. Jazz and punkrock music to be exact. Najarian prefers to work with that of raw materials and is also influenced by traditional painters from the past and those of modern abstract painters. Though he is happy with what ends up on the material he is working on, he admits that knowing where the creation will end up is not always the case. His paintings in particular are very much layered with multiple strokes and colors of paint. One painting he clarified on was his painting titled “Love Wins by Fighting” that was inspired by the events happening at the borders and the family and groups affected by the laws implemented there. He goes on to describe painting like a chef using different kinds of tastes for his creations. And with continuing to use music as an example, Najarian says to try and listen to a favorited piece of music and try and attempt to create something from the sounds being played. And as the introduction of his work was coming to a close, he states that his latest collection are the clearest pieces of work he has produced to date. One piece of advice he gave when asked if there was ever an idea that slipped his mind, was that he always leaves a voice memo on his phone and tries to write down the general idea on a notepad or whatever he has on hand.
Najarian’s work can be viewed now through October 2 at the business building located on the North side of the Rio Hondo College campus. (Right) “Sun Ra is Contagious” was one of the pieces that artist Hagop Najarian elaborated on while speaking about his collection of work. He describes the use of the couple of vertical columns as key strokes from a piano.
JAIME APARICIO/EL PAISANO
(Above) Before the crowds began to grow for the begining of the artist talk, students and friends of featured artist Najarian walked the gallery to get a good look at the pieces of work. It wasn’t long before the gallery itself filled almost to capacity.
(Above) Director Robert Miller is very proud of the diversity that he and the Rio Hondo campus can offer for students to gaze upon and take inspiration from. Miller encourages all students to take advantage of the gallery in order to not only view different works or art, but to also have a stage to displays one’s own art for all to see.

New “Halloween” Movie Trailer Brings Back The Scares and Suspense from The Original DANIELLE ANZURES Staff Writer
Danielle.anzures8473@my.riohondo.edu
The latest Halloween trailer dropped September 5 and it’s giving Laurie Strode a gun. Jamie Lee Curtis returns to her iconic role in this sequel/reboot and she has some issues. The trailer opens up with dialogue about what happened in the original film from Laurie and another character. As this is happening, Michael Myers is starting his killing spree. We are then shown Michael stalking the town of Haddonfield as Laurie says, “I have prayed every night that he would escape,” when asked why Laurie replies, “So I can kill him.” The rest of the trailer sets up the plot of the film. As Michael escapes his asylum, Laurie prepares for the fight of her life. Everybody else is thrown into chaos. This new trailer oozes nostalgia yet is modern without feeling too forced. And it’s nice to see the
damage Michael has caused on Laurie’s psyche since their last interaction. Though it should be noted that the new film will ignore all 11 sequels that came out after the original. The original film set a standard for horror films, not only giving us classic tropes, but also a story about a suburban neighborhood being terrorized and having their peace broken. With this new trailer it gives hope that it will live up to the original. And according to the original director and co-writer, John Carpenter, it will. “This is as good as I’ve seen since we did the first movie,” said Carpenter, who is working as executive producer for the film, according to Entertainment Weekly. If the latest trailer interests you be sure to keep an eye out when it hits theaters October 19.
(Right) Jamie Lee Curtis returns as the original “scare-queen” Laurie Strode in the new installment to the “Halloween franchise. Original director John Carpenter has gone on to say that the new film will please fans of the films and characters.

The measure of a true artist.” Perry was referring to OWN’s top show “The Haves and Have Nots.” In an interview on “Entertainment Tonight,” Owens says Perry’s offer “ a very, very generous thing for him to say,” but “It would be lovely as one of the results of this, some doors open
in terms of giving me the opportunity to audition. That, I would appreciate – always, as all actors do,” he adds, “I don’t necessarily feel comfortable being given things as a result of this. W
hen Colin Kaepernick, former 49ers quarterback, was first noticed sitting through the national anthem during a preseason game back in August 26, 2016, a soft murmur broke out. Kaepernick spoke to Steve Wyche and said the following in regards as to why he was sitting: “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of colour. To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.” That soft murmur quickly turned into an outraged roar, but not even this could stop Kaepernick or any other NFL player from sitting down through the national anthem. Now, it stands to be said that prior to 2009 there wasn’t a spoken or unspoken requirement for NFL players to be on the field for the national anthem. “As you know, the NFL has a long tradition of patriotism. Players are encouraged but not required to stand for the anthem,” said NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy days after Kaepernick spoke to Wyche. So what was the issue with Kaepernick sitting down for the anthem? Many said it was blatant disrespect for the flag, the nation and its veterans. Kaepernick addressed these concerns and said that he has nothing but utmost respect for the people that protect this country. It was on August 30th that former Seahawks player and Army Special Forces veteran, Nate Boyer, wrote an open letter to Kaepernick. Boyer said, among other things, that he “was not judging you for standing up for what you believe in. It’s your inalienable right. What you are doing takes a lot of courage, and I’d be lying if I said I knew what it was like to walk around in your shoes. I’ve never had to deal with prejudice because of the color of my skin, and for me to say I can relate to what you’ve gone through is as ignorant as someone who’s never been in a combat zone telling me they understand what it’s like to go to war.” Boyer and Kaepernick had a conversation after that that ended with Boyer encouraging Kaepernick to take a knee during the anthem as a form of middle ground. “...the way that soldiers take a knee in front of a fallen brother’s grave to show respect. When we’re on a patrol, you know, and we go into a security halt,
They called millennials “too sensitive” but they’re the ones upset over a kneeling man.
Just speak out.

(insert caption here) we take a knee, and we pull security,” said Boyer. With veteran support the topic should have ended and the athletes that continued their peaceful protest should have been allowed to do so. That was not the case. The chaos that followed ended up robbing Kaepernick of his position not just with the 49ers, who had released a statement after Kaepernick first began protesting saying that they “...recognise the right of an individual to choose and participate, or not, in our celebration of the national anthem,” but with the NFL at large. Yet even with that unfair outcome it honestly looked like it was more or less blowing over. Two years of insults against anyone that knelt during the anthem came to a culmination when Nike released its 30 year anniversary “Just do it” campaign with Kaepernick’s face plastered all over it. As one can imagine, it did not go over well with the most patriotic citizens of this country. People began the #Nikeboycott that had people cutting off the iconic Nike “swoosh” off their socks and clothing while others burned their Nike apparel. The reaction was so instant and passionate that one man even burned his Nike shoes while he was still wearing them. Some felt pressured to pick between their favorite shoes and their country. A stretch at most, because
nobody is making anyone do anything. To burn products you already bought is almost as ineffective as thinking that you could kneel during the national anthem and not have your message be misunderstood. Nike already has the money from the products people are burning and their stock haven’t really suffered, but their sales did go up 31 percent. And maybe Nike added too much insult to injury by buying airtime during the Thursday evening football game, where they showed a two minute commercial with Kaepernick’s voice over images of athletes overcoming all sorts of obstacles, but so what? Kaepernick had Boyer’s support from beginning, and even now veterans of all ages stand by his message. In fact, Robert O’Neill, the
Navy Seal who killed Osama Bin Laden, has weighed in on the matter saying that he “sees both sides of the argument” and thinks that people that are burning their Nikes are “stupid.” Very stupid, when these same people are also supposed veteran supporters. It would have been easier and less wasteful to donate the offensive items to the thousands of the homeless veterans. The truly amusing part is that Nike and the NFL have a contract together until 2028, so no matter what the outcry from die hard patriotic football fans, Nike isn’t leaving their lives any time soon. What surprised many was that Ford Motor Company, who just signed a three year contract with the NFL to make the F-Series the league’s official truck, stepped up this past Labor Day and stated
that they “...respect individuals’ rights to express their views, even if they are not ones we share. That’s part of what makes America great.” On top of all that, Levi’s made an announcement a day after Labor Day saying that they will be launching a threetiered initiative that would benefit gun violence prevention groups. The denim giant feels it has a moral obligation to help stop this country’s gun violence epidemic. Conservatives across the states are raging over this turn of events, at this rate they’re going to be left with no socks, no shoes, no jeans, and no trucks to drive. Who would have thought that the very people that criticize millennials for being “too sensitive” would be the same people getting offended over a kneeling man?

You’ll Believe God Is a Woman
Cosmopolitan/ via MTV After her performance at the VMA Grande proceeded to bring on stage the two most important of her life; with her grandmother on side and her mother on the other. Madelyn Gastelum Reporter
madelyn.gastelum1526@my.riohondo.
T
here have been a lot of influential women icons throughout the decades that have taken the pop music industry by storm and left a mark with their songs. Ariana Grande is making her way onto this list with her powerful voice and an even louder message. Her most recent album, Sweetener, is full of symbolism embedded within her lyrics and music videos. The song to listen to is titled “God Is a Woman”, and like me, you’ll believe God is a woman after hearing this song too. After listening to Grande’s newest hit I felt confident, sexy, and powerful.
Her message from the lyrics isn’t what you would think it is, Grande doesn’t talk about how she knows what the gender of the all mighty is, but instead the ethereal effect that a woman’s body will have on a man. “You love it how I move you You love it how I touch you My one, when all is said and done You’ll believe God is a woman” Grande opens the song with these lines and her message that said that she knows what her man loves, and when it is all over he will be so impacted that the paradise known as God’s land will be reached with the help of a woman and her touch. Grande is telling the world that women are the link between heaven and earth, and for that brief moment, women are the
key to paradise. Grande missed no chance to emphasize the true power of a woman within her music video with several key scenes throughout the duration of the song. It opens with Grande swinging her hips in a circle, and that movement moves a universe wrapped around her waist. The song goes on and the next message of women empowerment comes up. Grande, dramatically bigger than the men that stand at her feet, sits in a chair while they shout explicit slurs meant to break down women but she stays tall and they bounce off of her. The biggest image of symbolism that Grande included is towards the end after the final chorus when she walks out, dressed in black latex and throws a mallet to a glass ceiling, shattering it.
The phrase, “The Glass Ceiling” is a metaphor created to explain the invisible border that keeps those, such as minorities and women, from achieving a certain level in a hierarchy. Often times women use this phrase to describe their struggle of trying to gain a high level of status within a company. Seeing this metaphor go from a phrase to a literal image and then to see it be broken thus letting the light in, made me feel like women in society today really are pushing their limits to get their equal treatment in every sense. Grande also created headlines for the song when she performed it live at the MTV Video Music Awards. She creatively reenacted the scene of the last supper having a woman of color portray Jesus and six girls on either side of her to represent the
Apostles, Grande being one of them. Creatively speaking the performance was well thought out, not only did Grande make sure that all 40 performers were women but she took it a step forward and honored the women in her life. Nearing the end of the song Grande walked out holding hands with the three most important women in her life, her mother, grandmother, and her future mother-in-law. All of these scenes and performances that have come out of this song Grande aims to show the true power of a woman and how her body isn’t something to be ashamed of but instead to embrace. A woman’s body is the source of her power because only we can unlock the paradise that everyone seeks.

It’s common to see South Korean men walking down a street with a face full of BB Cream, concealer, or any related skin care product. Partly influenced by K-Idols’ (Korean Pop Artists) flawless baby skin. Who wouldn’t want their face looking like that? When people think make-up, they might have “drag-queen” status running through their mind. And it’s not to that extent. The make-up Korean

Youtuber Kim Seung-hwan in an interview with BBC, “Then I found out about cosmetic products. There was a drastic change in my skin after using these products.”
The delicate topic questions masculinity of course, but a co-worker I call Luis Sanchez, frankly disagrees. Sanchez says, “Honestly, I’m just really big on self-care, I don’t see it as a feminine thing.” He believes a skin-care routine is important and something others dismiss. Sanchez added by saying, “I used to have bad acne in high school and I always wanted to get rid of it, so my friend Aly put me on a skin care routine. Not only did I notice a major difference, people started complimenting my skin.” Mud Masks and moisturizing can surprisingly make your face happy. Aside from it being questionable to masculinity, it can help your skin in the long run.

Why Be a Drag, When You Can be a Queen? Cesar E. Gonzalez Lifestyles/Opinions Editor

aturday nights are called “Anaconda Saturdays” which takes place in the city of Pomona at Alibi East (@alibi_ east), the club located on 225 S San Antonio Ave is known to be one of the friendliest Gay & Lesbian clubs/bars in the Los Angeles County. Every weekend a different drag-performance is hosted by Virginia X (@virginia_x_13) and her lineup of drag queen performers, but who is Virginia X? Virgilio, also known as Virginia X, came to choose her performer name based on two things, “For most drag queens they usually find a female name that’s closest to their real boy name,” she explained, “My real boy name is Virgilio, so it has almost the feminine twist of Virginia.” When X is not performing in drag, you can find the boy behind her entity at bars, clubs, hanging out with friends, going to the movies or even theme parks. “When Virginia is not at play, the boy behind Virginia X likes to be at the bar,” she laughed, “he is an alcoholic, no I’m just kidding he is not an alcoholic because he doesn’t go to meetings.” X has been perform-
ing in drag for about six years now, September 23rd will mark her sixth-year anniversary. “My first performance was September 23rd of 2012, and as a debut number I was very unsure on what I wanted to do,” X goes onto say, “I knew that I wanted to pick a song that I wanted to portray and the song I chose was by Lady Gaga called ‘Queen.’” Her first performance took place in Downtown Pomona at the 340 Nightclub. It wasn’t until competing in drag performances that X realized it was something she became passionate about. “It was actually a competition, winners got money if they placed in first, second, or third at the time,” she mentioned, “but the best thing I got was when audience members told me afterward that they loved what I did they loved me and my energy on stage and it became my passion and drive.” X found inspiration through other friends who did drag performances but also gives credit to Raven and Chanel from the infamous show RuPaul’s Drag Race, which airs on the television networks, VH1 and Logo TV. Although X does
not have a favorite genre of music, it does vary with those that fall under the category of top 40s. “I tend to lean towards top 40 hits only because I know the clubs I work for usually have a bigger response for those,” she commented, “those and power ballads usually have a big impact because I love to emote a lot of emotions.” When asked who her favorite artists are, X immediately mentioned Lady Gaga and Whitney Houston. In terms of X on “coming out,” she never really had the issue of anyone asking her questions, instead already having known that she is who she is. “During high school actually, I ironically gravitated to those of likeminds and it just happened that way,” she continued to say, “there was a little support group that we had that I fell into without knowing. After high school, I actually joined a non-profit organization that was geared towards LGBTQ-Latinos in the community and I attended weekly meetings and that’s where I got my support to branch out and become who I am because of them.” The best thing about performing for X is the transformation to serve up looks and aesthetic. “I’m not a dancing queen, I’m not a trick

queen, I don’t do SHABLAMS and twirls or cartwheels,” X stated, “but I just love the art of transformation and that is my favorite part.” Lastly X shared some words of advice for those who are struggling with their sexuality today, “My word of advice is to take your time, because right now there is a lot of social media involvement and multimedia involvement on everything that is under the LGBTQ spectrum that has not been there before,” X commented, “so if you’re ever questioning yourself or don’t know yourself surely, take your time there is no need to rush to anything. You don’t want to jump to conclusions and if you do feel that you are part of the community there is resources, there are people that are there that can help you and guide you so that you will never be alone.” For more information on the resources mentioned above, you can visit: www. bienestar.org, www.bienestar.org/about-us/, and www. bienestar.org./support-services/

Despite taking a 7-2 lead into halftime at the Rio Hondo Aquatic Center, the Rio Hondo women’s Water Polo team lost 7-8 Wednesday, Sept. 5 to South Coast Conference foes El Camino College Warriors. It was a bright start for the Roadrunners and freshman center Jessica Lopez as her five first half goals put the hosts ahead by a comfortable margin. “It’s our first game.” Head coach Todd Lim said post game, “Our personnel has been very fluid and changing so we’re still learning our players. For us to come in on the first game like this and be up 7-2 i thought that was fantastic.” Just before the halftime whistle though, Lopez’s third exclusion foul meant ejection from the game, leaving the Lady Roadrunners short of its goal scorer for the rest of the contest. “Our leading scorer in the game Jessica Lopez got three exclusions, which is the most you can have during the game so she was out for the remainder of time just before half. So that changed the entire dynamic.” Lim said. Coach Lim mentioned he was proud of the effort from the start of the whistle. The tenacity and grit the girls showed heart, “They scrapped and that’s a quality I always appreciate.” Up next for Rio is a trip to Chaffey College Wednesday, Sept. 19.

A goal against the run of play midway through the first half from Pirates Kensho Adachi put the visitors in front. The goal was the first time this season Rio failed to score before its opponents this season. For head coach Orlando Brenes and the squad on the sideline, things would get nervy as time passed. A stout set-up from Coast’s defense made it difficult for the Roadrunner’s attack the first 70 minutes that it seemed Rio’s good fortunes to start the season would run out. Enter stage Tobias Garcia-Mendez. The freshman forward from Sierra Vista High School came into this game scoring two consecutive game-winners for the team (vs. Mira Costa 2-1, vs. San Diego City 1-0). And it was his 10 minutes of magic Friday that would blow the game open for the Roadrunners. Coach Brenes got ejected from the game after criticizing a refereeing decision, and from that foul, Pirates Nicholas Cardena latched on and dispensed past goalkeeper Jiro Duenas for the late equalizer. The tie felt like something of a loss, but after battling from 1-0 down late in the game, Garcia mentioned that a tie is better than losing. “Anything is better than a loss.
