Remembering Selena Quintanilla 25 Years Later CLARISSA MARTINEZ Reporter
clarissa.martinez6616@my.riohondo.edu
It’s been 25 years since the world was stripped away of one of the greatest and most influential artists, Selena Quintanilla. The young Mexican-American singer from Texas made a huge impact on so many people’s lives. She was so much more than an artist; Selena was a role model to young girls and women all over, including myself. I have so many fond memories as a child hearing “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom” at my Nana’s house. I would wake up early just to watch the Selena movie and imitate her dance moves. I remember dancing to “Cumbia Medley” at family parties. I can hear my sister and cousin singing “Amor Prohibido” to me as a kid. To this day I’m strongly influenced by her fashion. From the puffy sleeves, the bustiers, the large hoops to the ‘Disco Medley’ purple jumpsuit, Selena’s style will always inspire me. Growing up I always felt left out because I couldn’t speak Spanish, but when I would listen to her music, I felt closer to my heritage. She represented the Latin community and brought it forth in pop culture. She was one of the first female Tejano singers to dominate the music charts. In a world where we, as minorities, feel highly underrepresented, Selena was the

She was a singer, songwriter, spokeswoman, model, actress, and a fashion icon. Selena was born on April 16, 1971. She grew up in Lake Jackson, Texas. It was there that she would spend all her time practicing singing in Spanish with her father and former musician, Abraham Quintanilla. Selena grew up only speaking English, but her father was determined she learn to speak Spanish fluently. She was the lead singer of her family’s band Selena y Los Dinos, which was managed by her father. The band started off
Review: ‘The Invisible Man,’ Not Your Same Ol’ Reboot DAVID FLORES Reporter
david.flores5487@my.riohondo.edu
Reboots, remakes and revivals are Hollywood’s bread and butter as the majority of mainstream successful films are hardly based on original ideas. However, the newly released “The Invisible Man” is different from the usual movie rebrand. Originally an H.G. Wells’ novel published in 1897, then made into a film in 1933, the new film has a change in approach. Writer and director Leigh Whannell chose to tell the story centering around the lead female character Cecelia played by Elisabeth Moss as opposed to focusing on the invisible man’s point of view. Although Whannell may not be a
recognizable name by audiences, he has an impressive resume that includes writing credits for multiple“Saw” movies as well as the “Insidious” films. With “The Invisible Man” being such an old and forgotten story, there is the likelihood that this remake would lack true substance, but given the fact Whannell is at the helm of both the story and direction, the film’s upside was clear. Whannell is coming off of writing and directing a sci-fi action packed thriller titled “Upgrade,” which went under the radar upon its release in 2018. Both “Upgrade” and “The Invisible Man” have advanced technology at the base of their stories but with Whannell there is more than meets the eye as his films tend to transform
playing small wedding gigs and parties, and later went on to touring for bigger acts. At age 11, Selena had her big break when she opened up for popular Tejano band Mazz. From that moment on, Selena won over the hearts of people from all over the world. Her music was loved universally. She revolutionized Tejano music, which is a music style that fuses Texan and Mexican influences, and became known as the Queen of Tejano. She went on to become of the most influential and successful female Latin artists in mainstream media. At age 23, the young star was murdered in 1995 by Yolanda Saldivar, the
president of her fan club. She would be celebrating her 48th birthday in just a couple of weeks. “The first time I heard Selena was when my grandma played her ‘Amor Prohibido’ CD,” Rebeka Moran, a fan, reflected on the first time she fell in love with Selena’s music. “I remember learning the lyrics from the album art book and dancing to her music with my grandma. When I saw the Selena movie, my love for her grew stronger. I think for me, it was because it showed Selena as a young girl that looked just like me. Watching her grow up into this beautiful entertainer was inspiring. She made me feel
proud to be Mexican-American. She became my role model.” Jessie Venegas, another fan of the musician, shares why Selena means so much to him: “For me she was the first glimpse I had of a “pop star”, although she was more than that, she was a Latina who had to prove herself in both America and Latin America as well. [She] paved the way for many pop stars that are in the music charts now. She will always be the queen.” Selena was a Latin icon that continues to live in the hearts of the billions of fans whose lives she impacted. Her legacy will always carry on.
into genre bending rides. With “The Invisible Man” the audience is following the life of Moss’ character Cecelia as she looks to move on from a toxic relationship. For a brief moment in the film Cecelia seems to have successfully moved on from her abusive fiancé Adrian played by Oliver Jackson-Cohen. Her freedom, however, is short-lived as she believes Adrian has made himself invisible and is still tormenting her. “The Invisible Man” has enough suspenseful scenes to keep the audience entertained as it’s never known
when in fact the invisible man is on screen. Aside from the successful jump scares that occur, the film touches on a broader more real topic. The issue of gaslighting, which is to manipulate someone by psychological means into questioning their own sanity, and victim blaming as well as domestic violence are all issues included in the film. Due to the fact Cecelia cannot prove that Adrian is invisible and haunting her, everyone deems her to be crazy and refuses to believe her. The audience sees firsthand what the victim has to
go through as Moss does a phenomenal job playing the role. Cecelia goes through a gamut of emotions, she has to be strong to fight back, she is going crazy when dealing with family and friends, and she has to be smart as she has no help from others. With the storytelling and direction of Whannell, “The Invisible Man” is a rewatchable film in a genre that has little replay value outside of those that love scary movies. Well it does offer the typical jump and frightening scenes the film strives on the fact it contains a deeper story.

Quantum Technology Can Now Find and Treat Heart Disease BRYAN CHAVEZ Reporter
bryan.chavez5634@my.riohondo.edu
JAIME APARICIO/EPN Technology, like the world, is an ever changing aspect of our daily lives. Old tech from the past inspires new tech with needed upgrades to be flashier and faster than past models or ideas. However, with technicians developing new tech from past ideas, even the modern uses in the medical field will become obsolete just as quickly as they come.
With new inventions coming out everyday, the field of quantum physics has brought to light a new way to help potentially save hundreds of thousands of lives. Using atomic physics and quantum sensing, the professionals at the medical school of University College London have successfully tested their new technology that lets them find and locate any heart abnormalities. Its intentions are used to detect Atrial fibrillation(ATF). The heart condition causes irregular and abnormally fast heart rate. Over time this condition can potentially cause blood clots, strokes, heart failure and other complications. The way doctors detect this ATF is by an electrocardiogram, but it can only be diagnosed during an episode. The only way it can be treated is with surgery and even then patients still require treatment afterward.
Now with the help of the technology developed by UCL, it can picture the way the heart conducts by imitating a real heart tissue that way doctors can diagnose and locate where the abnormality is. Corresponding author Dr. Luca Marmugi (UCL Physics & Astronomy and UCLQ) said, “Surgery to treat atrial fibrillation effectively cuts the wires to prevent a short circuit in the heart, resetting the irregular heartbeat to a normal one, and our technology would help to identify where the short circuit is. While not available in the clinic yet, we’ve shown, for the first time, that it is possible to map the conductivity of live tissues in small volumes to an unprecedented level of sensitivity and at room temperature.” They believe that their quantum sensors can detect and locate the abnormality in a matter of seconds by placing the equipment over the heart. The next step for this development is to
collaborate with clinicians to integrate the technology into a tool for use in GPs surgeries and hospitals.

NASA Select Mission to Study What Causes Giant Solar Particle Storms

NASA is on a new space mission as scientists want to study more about the biggest star, the sun. A new mission called SunRISE will study what drives solar particle storms and giant surges of solar particles that erupt off the sun. Also, scientists want to understand how much storms will impact interplanetary space that can help protect spacecraft and astronauts. Their goal is to help themselves understand the sun and protect astronauts
traveling beyond earth. Not only does NASA want such information to improve studying of how our solar system functions but it can help protect astronauts traveling to the moon and mars by providing better details. Moreover, on how the suns radiation impacts the space environment they must travel through. The mission named the Sun Radio Interferometer Space Experiment (SunRISE) is an array of six CubeSats operating as one very large radio telescope. The positive news is that NASA has been awarded $62.7 million to
sketch, set up and launch SunRise by 2023. The idea of the new project began in August 2017 and NASA chose SunRISE as one of two mission of opportunity proposals to conduct an 11-month mission concept study. In February 2019, the agency agreed to resume formulation study of the mission for one more year. Justin Kasper, the person who led the SunRISE at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. And people who work for NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab in Pasadena, California had the plan to
take the next step of creating the new project. Features of the New Model Their mission is to design a six-powered CubeSats each about the size of a toaster oven. Also, to simultaneously see radio images of low frequency emission from solar activity and share them via NASA. The constellation of CubeSats will glide within six miles (ten kilometers) of each other. Above the Earth atmosphere, which otherwise blocks the radio signals SunRISE will see. Together, the six CubeSats will make 3D maps
to pinpoint where giant particle bursts originate on the Sun. Including on how they evolve as they enlarge outward into space. Furthermore, it will help determine what initiates and accelerates these big jets of radiation. The six individual spacecraft will also collaborate together to chart for the first occasion. Finally, the pattern of magnetic field lines reaching from the Sun out into interplanetary space. Above all the new SunRise mission can be one of the best interventions to study the sun more in depth.

Male Dolphins Match The Tempo of Each Others Calls When Working Together
JAIME APARICIO/EPM Being included among the most intelligent mammals on the planet, the bottlenosed dolphin is capable of extraordinary feats. As with showing distinct coordination, the bottlenose is also capable of showing compassion to humans swimming alongside them in the wild. EVELYN VARGAS Reporter

A study has found that male bottlenose dolphins match the tempo of each other’s calls when working together in addition to synchronizing their movements. Researchers from an international team used long-term acoustic data from the famous population of dolphins in Shark Bay, Western Australia. With this study,
researchers were able to provide insight into the importance of physical and vocal coordination in alliance-forming animals. This study was published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B, discovered that male dolphins coordinate their behavior in a similar way to humans when working as a team. In this study male dolphins were shown to match the tempo of their partner’s calls and sometimes produce their calls in sync.
In the past it was thought that only humans used both physical and verbal synchronised actions to strengthen bonds and improve cooperation. This research was taken place by an international team from Universities of Western Australia (UWA) and Bristol. In humans, synchronised actions can lead to increased feelings of bonding, foster cooperation and inclusively reduce the perceived threat of rivals. Dr. Stephanie King,
senior lecturer from Bristol’s School of Biological Sciences says, “Male dolphins need to work together to herd a female and defend her from rival alliances, but they are also competing to fertilise her.” Aside from humans, there is a smaller group of animals that coordinate both vocal signs and physical movement when working as a team. This study also found that male bottlenose dolphins not only synchronise their movements but also use their
vocal behavior when forming alliances. A worker from UWA’s School of Biological Sciences, Bronte Moore says that male bottlenose dolphins can form alliances that can last for decades. This is great news for the Peel region as the Peel-Harvey Estuary is home to more than 80 resident dolphins. There are also at about 30 who live in the Dawesville Cut and hundreds more along the coast who also occasionally visit our inland waterways.

Major League Baseball Considering May Return in Arizona
COVID-19 Stops the World of Soccer BRYAN CHAVEZ Reporter
bryan.chavez5634@my.riohondo.edu
ENRIQUE MEDINA/EPM The plan for Major League Baseball to potentially return in May is still in talks and would have to be agreed upon by the MLB Players Association. Some players such as Colorado Rockies Third Baseman Nolan Arenado have expressed willingness to go with the plan as long as everyone is safe. ENRIQUE MEDINA Co-Sports Editor
enrique.medina4922@my.riohondo.edu
On Monday night it was announced via MLB reporter Jeff Passan that Major League Baseball has worked with high-ranking public health officials along with its players to develop a plan to start its season in Arizona by May. The plan has a lot of working pieces around it, but Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA) are determined to get something done. The plan would have all 30 MLB teams play in Arizona around the Phoenix area in Spring Training Facilities, Arizona Diamondback’s Chase Field, and other baseball fields close by. Players, coaches, and other staff members would be isolated in a local hotel and would only travel to and from the stadium back to the hotel during what would most possibly be a shortened season. Given this potential isolation, players, coaches, umpires and all staff would be separated from their families during the season for an indefinite amount of time. One key point in the plan working as discussed by the MLB and according to Passan’s report is that all
players and coaches would be tested in May for COVID-19. Ensuring the health of older coaches, umpires, and staff is one of the most primary issues in regard to making this plan work as discussed by the league. Another key point about this is that it was discussed that even if someone were to test positive for the virus, given the fact that players and staff will be in a protected and isolated environment, it is not believed for this to be a reason to quarantine a whole team or even suspend the season. Due to this possibility, it has been discussed that teams will be allowed to have larger MLB rosters than usual. Given the expanded rosters could mean that more minor league players could be given MLB salaries due to potential roster expansion. Among this whole concept as well, MLB players will still be getting paid amid this potential plan. Questions and potential hurdles do arise amongst this plan as well. Given this plan, no fans will be allowed to attend games. There does come the issue economically on what the league could do because of this and some of the potential ideas already in the discussion include the possibility of more nationally
televised games. There also comes other topics of discussion like players’ and coaches ’ safety, questions regarding media, scouting, etc and all of this is going into discussion among the MLB and MLBPA. Other potential ideas that have been discussed more along the lines on how games will be conducted include the possibility of including an electronic strike zone to allow umpires to be six feet apart from the catcher and also incorporating player microphones for people to hear players during TV broadcasts of the games. Other topics discussed include taking out mound visits altogether, playing seven inning double headers throughout the season to try and get closer to the typical 162 game season, and also incorporating social distancing methods for players in the dugout. The MLB and MLBPA are still in discussions and an agreement is not official yet by any means but both are realizing that if something can not be agreed upon, there is the fear of the season potentially having to be cancelled. If an agreement were to be reached though, it would mean Major League Baseball would be the first professional sport to spring back into action.
With the novel COVID-19 continuing to cause distress for the world it has also created problems within the soccer community. Currently, all leagues across the world have suspended their competitions. Italy was the first to do so with Serie A suspending their season with no information on when its return might be. The Spanish league was next to take action and postponing its current season, and many of the European teams followed. In this situation, the health of players, staff, and fans will always be more important than finishing the season. In London, Chelsea player Callum Hudson-Odoi tested positive and Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta tested positive as well with both recovering. Many other teams had cases within their staff and players, which led to decisions of playing with closed doors off the tables. Now UEFA and FIFA will have to meet up and discuss the best way to fix the current and future schedule. One of the most popular
options is voiding the current season throughout all leagues and restart around August or September when the leagues usually begin or stopping the season on where it is right now, which would be the most reasonable solution. It would be unfair to cancel the season for teams that were on top of their leagues. Liverpool, for example, has gone 30 years without winning a Premier League title and they only needed 6 points in 9 games to win the title. Teams fighting for promotion would not benefit from this either, it would mean they would miss playing in the top division next season. Other than causing confusion with organizing the calendar for the remainder and the following season is the television revenue and commercial rights that each team has with different broadcasting networks. This is something that is solved internally between each individual club. There is not much information on when the season might continue again. Now our focus should be on resolving this global pandemic and helping those who are affected by the virus.

After a very frustrating six years for many Dodgers fans locally with blackouts preventing them from watching Dodger games on the Dodgers primary channel SportsNet LA, the channel has come to an agreement with DirecTV and AT&T that allows Dodger fans to finally watch the boys in blue. The agreement was ironically announced on April 1, but yes the agreement is actually happening. Many fans since 2014 were not given the chance to watch the Dodgers from their TV as SportsNet LA was blacked out in most local areas. The agreement is giving access to fans in Southern California, Las Vegas, and Hawaii. SportsNet LA will be available on channel 690 for DirecTV customers and will be available for AT&T TV customers, AT&T Now customers, and U-verse TV customers. For those on AT&T, access to SportsNet LA will not be given until
Wednesday, April 8th. For all customers, they will be able to view every show and segment in regards to SportsNet LA and the Dodgers. Those including pre-game and post-game shows, behind the scenes, and other segments on the channel. During this time, specifically of the coronavirus, SportsNet LA has been showing recent games from the past few seasons. Those have included Clayton Kershaw’s no-hitter back in his historic 2014 season, Dodgers 2019 Opening Day at Dodger Stadium, and others. In an interview with SportsNet LA, team president Stan Kasten described the agreement saying, “this has been so long coming... it is so important for our fans.” As for Dodger fans whenever baseball is to return, this is huge as a big wave of a new generation of Dodgers fans and Dodger fans, in general, will finally be able to have access to watch their beloved boys in blue.

For the very first time, WWE WrestleMania held a two-night streaming event on Saturday and Sunday of April 4th and 5th at 7 pm ET. Because of the pandemic, there was no audience in the stadium, but that didn’t stop them from continuing WrestleMania 36. One of the major
things on Day 1 was The Undertaker coming into the place like a baddy on wheels and an outfit matching his original costume, but with a twist and a bandana to boot. A creative outlook was present when they decided to put on a show of a lifetime “teleporting” The Undertaker out of a grave and behind Styles making it cinematic note-worthy and ending it with him telling Styles “What’s my wife’s name? You
remember it now?” Becky Lynch also took the floor retained her Raw women’s championship, held by Ronda Rousey at WrestleMania 35. She barely got the win by countering against Shayna Baszler’s Kirifuda Clutch submission finisher right into a pin. A last-minute sub in Braun Stownman stoled the show as he won his very first Universal Championship, taking Roman Reigns place who
pulled out of the event due to coronavirus health concerns. By the end, Bruan Stownman came out the biggest winner while Kabuki Warriors emerged as the biggest losers. Day 2 was nothing short either with the events being Brock Lesnar vs. Drew McIntyre, Edge vs. Randy Orton, John Cena vs. “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt, Rhea Ripley vs. Charlotte Flair, Bayley vs. Lacey Evans vs.
Tamina vs. Naomi vs. Sasha Banks, The Street Profits vs. Austin Theory and Angel Garza, Aleister Black vs. Bobby Lashley, Otis vs. Dolph Ziggler, and last but not least Natalya vs. Liv Morgan. Brock Lesnar got stunned, and Edge outlasted Orton. These two days gave the light of hope and tension that some fans have been missing the action and the drama in all this self-isolation.
Healthy 30 Year Old Baseball Coach Dies in New Jersey from Coronavirus

Ben Luderer, a healthy 30-year-old Baseball coach at Cliffside Park High
School in New Jersey died of COVID-19, otherwise known as the coronavirus on Monday, March 30th. Luderer was a baseball coach at Cliffside Park High, coaching the next generation of varsity base-
ball athletes at Cliffside Park High, who also taught as a special education teacher at a nearby middle school. Luderer, a perfectly healthy 30-year-old, had started feeling symptoms the week before after his wife
Brandy had also tested positive for COVID-19. Luderer was sent into the hospital on March 27th and was given medication and was put on oxygen once arriving. By Sunday, March 29th, Luderer started feeling better and was able to hold a conversation again with his wife Brandy, until that night came along. That night after isolating herself from her husband, Luderer’s wife Brandy noticed that he started to feel worse, describing in an interview with Buzzfeed News that, “He was sweating through his clothes. He was scared.” Later on, the next morning, once she woke up, Brandy discovered that the Luderer was dead. For everyone involved and that knew Ben, it was a huge shock. Luderer had been apart of one of New Jersey’s best high school teams of all time when he attended Don Bosco Preparatory High School back in 2008. The private Catholic School had
gone undefeated, a perfect 33-0 record in a run that ultimately ended in a state championship. Luderer was an extremely key member of the team who many in New Jersey seem to have deemed as an invincible team, playing catcher and being one of the main leaders on that team that went undefeated. His leadership continued even after his playing days as he would go on to play at Marist College in New York and would go on to become a special education teacher years after. He was always described as a leader and someone you could count on according to his former high school baseball coach Greg Butler. Luderer leaves off a very amazing legacy among the baseball community in New Jersey and also leaves off an even greater legacy off the diamond. This only goes to show again, just how dangerous the coronavirus can be.

Historic Uptown Whittier hosts their very own Farmers Market every Friday. Located on Bright and Philadelphia Street, the market hours are 8am-1pm. The Farmers market is a community gathering place for locals to personally meet the Farmers who grow the produce. We have the opportunity to learn how and where the food is produced. When shoppers buy directly from the farmer they can also build a relationship with them as well. Also while supporting the farmers who are providing for you just as much as they are providing for their families. We can learn how hard they work to bring us
some of the freshest food we can get. This is as real as it gets. No long distance shipping or having the produce sit around for days before its in your hands. It goes straight from its peak to your basket. Also when things are at their peak freshness without sitting around they are more vitamin packed. Meaning that the fruit doesn’t just sit around and lose its essential vitamins . When asked about the Farmers Market shopper Richard Jeremiah why he prefers the local farmers market. Jeremiah replied, ” The Farmers market is a better alternative than going to a regular grocery store like Ralphs or Stater Brothers. Number one you are supporting local businesses and the local economy. Number two
you know this food is California grown and raised. As opposed to getting it shipped from China, Ecuador, or Mexico. When things are foreign they have to travel. They have a lot more additives to make the shelf life last longer. Who knows what else they’re doing to them. Monsanto.” You can also nourish yourself healthier with local foods than grocery store foods. Also these foods can be gassed or waxed for appearance. Instead of going to the grocery store you can hit the farmers market where the foods are minimally processed. Another reason to choose the farmers market is for the variety. Farmers markets offer foods that basic grocery stores don’t. For
example fennel, rhubarb, jackfruit, red carrots, purple cauliflower and much more. There are flavors of fruits and vegetables out there that a lot of people are unaware about. Arrive early if you want the best and come late if you want the deals. As a bonus the farmers market allows you to get some Vitamin D from soaking up the sun. Enjoy the beautiful weather while you can instead of rolling your cart through artificial lights. Plus the farmers market is a more comfortable place to meet friends, walk your dog, or take the family. If you’re open to it you could potentially find and try one new thing that you may have never discovered.
