Middle school can be a challenging phase in a child's life. After reaching the peak of elementary school, they are again made to feel at the bottom as they transit into middle school. Children espouse a great deal of confidence in this age, but the confidence is short lived once they are put onto an unfamiliar environment. Coupled with this are issues in dealing with their high school seniors. There is a need for a system that co-ordinates and supports child in middle school. Many schools address this need through middle school student councils.
The role of student councils in this phase of a student's life is very crucial in the academic, personality and co-curricular development of the child. The councils should think beyond parent teacher meetings and student body meetings and create a favorable calendar of activities and programs that nurture the overall development of the child and help them cope with the hassles f middles school. Some activities they could take up are:
Involve some high school students in the council and encourage interaction between middle school and high school students. Middles schoolers may pick some tips from their seniors and also express confidence in their seniors. Organize events that give a chance for students to showcase their talent. They may come to realize of some talent they had previously not noticed and improve further on it. Involve the parents. Help them understand the psyche of their children at this stage of their child's life. This will help them deal with their children the right way. It will improve the parent-child bonding at an age when it is most needed.
