We often see people in movies picking locks using everyday objects, a hair clip for example, a credit card or even a filament from a light bulb. Lock picking is often associated with criminal activity. People who want to learn how to pick a lock should only consider using it in an emergency.
People who have the legal right to pick locks are called Locksmiths, people who have the essential tools and know how to pick locks. Lock picking tools are essentially tools that are use to pick the lock. These tools have several categories and can be sum up into three categories, the Tension tools, Pin/Tumbler and Wafer picks, and Pick guns.
One category of these is tension tools. These tools are often referred to as torsion tools or sometimes called torsion wrenches which are basically ? shaped tools. The ? shaped tool is used to push the pins up. Torsion tools are inserted into the lock to deliver tension to the lock. This tools are the most commonly use and may take a while to master.
Wafer and Pin or Tumbler picks is another category of tools that are use to pick locks. These lock picking tools are specifically designed for wafer and pin or tumbler locks which are widely use in UK and North America. These tools are commonly sold in sets which contain a torsion wrench, picks ranging from warded or rake picks, up to half-diamond, slagel and hook picks.
A set is composed of 9 up to 32 pieces, every piece has it own unique function. Warded picks or more commonly known as skeleton keys are used to open a lock that uses a common shape key. The rake pick is used to rake the pins inside the lock. The Half-diamond is used for pin locks, the slagel are best for electronically close locks meanwhile the hook is for traditional/common locks.
The last known category of lock picking tools is called pick guns. There are two types of pick gun the electronic and manual. The manual have a trigger that goes up and down that make the pins jump inside the lock. The manual pick gun requires a good timing and most preferred by locksmiths. The electronic pick gun vibrates to imitate the lock picking method of the manual lock picking. The pick gun is a very tool to master, master the timing and let the pick gun to all the work.
