Hughesville’s Dunkleberger receives DAISY Award for students

WILLIAMSPORT –

Pennsylvania College of Technology recently bestowed a DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nursing Students on Elexus J. Dunkleberger, of Hughesville.

Dunkleberger, who completed an associate degree in nursing from the college in December, was one of 15 nominees for the award following the Fall 2024 semester. She received nominations from two fellow students and from a family member of a patient she cared for during a clinical education experience.

“Elexus came into the room and had a true patient-first mentality,” one of her nominators wrote. “She checked the medications list, the IVs, the patient comfort, and probably a slew of other things I did not catch. More importantly, it was the little things she did that stood out.”

Things, the nominator elaborated, like asking the patient if they were OK and if she could do anything further, providing updates and explaining processes, furnishing a comfortable chair and extra pillow for a family member spending the night, adjusting lights, and closing the door and

“As bedside nurses flee the field, Elexus is a perfect example of what good students and incredible nurses are,” the nominator continued. “Her approach to the medical side was clearly well-learned. I was most impressed with her

personal touch, genuine care and skilled interactions, both with the patient and with her peers. In a stressful time, she was a knowledgeable and gentle hand.”

Another nominator wrote: “I have seen Elexus in multiple clinical sites, and she consistently sets an

Another nominator wrote about Dunkleberger’s perseverance and determination to grow as a nurse, actively participating in patient care and seeking new learning opportunities.

“She is able to provide all her care while simultaneously making sure she is not only treating the patient’s condition but she is treating the patient!” the nominator wrote. “Elexus … makes sure her patients feel the genuine concern and care she puts into her work.”

RESTAURANT ENTERTAINMENT & GUIDE

WILLIAMSPORT — The Lycoming College theatre department will continue its 2024-2025 season and start the Spring 2025 semester with a production of Stephen Spotswood’s “Girl in the Red Corner.” The show runs Feb. 26 to March 1 in the Mary L. Welch Theatre on the Lycoming College campus, with all shows beginning at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available to purchase beginning today.

Unemployed, fresh off a dead-end marriage, and searching for a way to take control of her life, Halo walks into a gym and signs up for mixed martial arts lessons. Her trainer thinks she’s a lightweight.

Her mother and sister think it’s just plain weird. Very quickly the lessons she learns in the ring bleed into the rest of her life and Halo finds herself battling against everyone around her. As she prepares for her first match, Halo realizes that life inside the cage and outside the cage are disturbingly similar. And that the only way to survive either is to fight.

The following Lycoming students have been cast in the production:

— Halo is played by Gabby Abraitis ’25, criminal justice and political science double major with an accounting minor;

— Gina is played by Kay Young ’25, astrochemistry major;

— Brinn is played by Paige McCaffrey ’27, corporate communications major with a criminology and theatre minor;

— Warren and others are played by Gale Hall ’25, creative writing and acting double major, and;

— Terry and others are played by AJ Marusko ’25, stage management major with a French minor;

“I love this play (and Steve's other plays) because of its gritty realism with bursts of comedy, complex characters, and an innate sense of theatricality,” said Matt Ripa, visiting assistant professor of theatre at Lycoming College and director of the show.

“The entire play takes place in an MMA cage and that cage becomes a microcosm for Halo's life. The lessons Halo learns in the octagon are lessons we can learn to fight the battles in our own lives.”

All tickets, including for Lycoming students and faculty, are complimentary, but seats must be reserved through bigtickets ahead of time.

Lycoming College’s theatre program is full of opportunities for practical experience. Students flour-

ish as they explore concentrations in acting, directing, musical theatre, design/technology, and stage management. As early as freshman year, students are encouraged to audition for shows and become involved in productions. The curriculum combines practical training in every aspect of theatre with a look back at the history and literature that has shaped theatre as an art form. More information on theatre at Lycoming College can be found online.

Food Hub

entering Fifth year at The Miller Center

Over 130,000 pounds of food have been distributed from the location

LEWISBURG

— The Union-Snyder Community Action Agency (CAA) is proud to celebrate the fifth anniversary of its Food Hub, an innovative solution to combat food insecurity in the region. Located inside The Miller Center for Recreation and Wellness, the Food Hub has made a significant impact on the community by distributing over 130,000 pounds of food since it began operating inside The Miller Center in 2021.

The Food Hub operates with three primary functions:

— Emergency Food Distribution: Providing immediate support through its in-house pantry to individuals and families in urgent need of food assistance.

— Nutritional Education: Offering programs like “Dining with Diabetes,” a free course offered in collaboration with Penn State Extension. This program equips adults with type 2 diabetes or prediabetes with knowledge and tools to maintain healthy eating habits and manage their condition effectively.

— Food Redistribution: The cornerstone of the Food Hub’s mission involves collecting and redistributing donated food to over 40 local food pantries and community programs, ensuring that those in need across Union and Snyder counties have access to nutritious meals.

The success of the

Nicole Peterson, Union-Snyder CAA community impact director; Rachel Herman, food security manager; and Philippe DuBois, Food Hub volunteer; educated visitors on the Food Hub’s offerings at WellSpan Evangelical Community Hospital’s Children’s Health Fair at The Miller Center.

Food Hub is made possible through partnerships with local organizations, including WellSpan Evangelical Community Hospital and Geisinger. These collaborations, combined with the state-of-the-art facilities at The Miller Center— featuring cold storage capabilities such as a walk-in refrigerator and freezer—allow the Food Hub to function efficiently and meet the growing needs of the community.

Food is sourced from a variety of places, including local farms and gardens, grocery stores, community donations, food drives, and partner organizations. This collaborative effort ensures a steady supply of fresh and shelf-stable food to support individuals and families experiencing food insecurity.

“Over the past four years, the Food Hub has demonstrated the power of community collaboration and innovation in addressing local food insecurity,” said Rachel Herman, Food Security Manager for Union-Snyder Community Action

Agency. “As we look ahead, we know that local resources like the Food Hub will be absolutely vital in supporting our food insecure neighbors and the programs that serve them. We are deeply grateful to Geisinger and WellSpan for funding this space. Without them and our incredible volunteers and staff, this milestone would not have been possible.”

Another service made possible by the Food Hub is the free Pop-Up Produce Stand. During warmer months, residents are invited to select fresh produce for themselves or someone in need, completely free of charge. The Pop-Up Produce Stand is offered May through October on the outdoor courtyard of The Miller Center every Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m. No registration is necessary and there are no income or geographical limits.

CAA’s Food Hub encourages the community to join in its mission. Those interested in volunteering or contrib-

uting through food or monetary donations can learn more by visiting https://www.union-snydercaa.org/foodhub.

Big Game Scoring event to be held in Dallas, PA

Pennsylvania Game Commission Northeast Regional Director Michael Beahm announced that a big game scoring session will be held on Saturday, March 22, 2025, at the Northeast Regional Headquarters building in Dallas. “It’s been over a year since an organized official scoring event was held in the region, and due to the success and popularity of last year’s scoring event, this will be another great opportunity for someone who harvested a Pennsylvania deer, bear, or elk that has record book potential to have that rack or skull scored. The Northeast Region has three game wardens who are certified by the Boone and

Crockett Club as official scorers, and they’ll be on hand for the day’s event,” said Beahm.

The Boone and Crockett Club is an American nonprofit organization that advocates fair chase hunting in support of habitat conservation and is North America’s oldest wildlife and habitat conservation organization and was founded in 1887 by Theodore Roosevelt.

“Since racks and skulls will be measured for possible inclusion in the Pennsylvania Big Game Record Book, only those Whitetail Deer, Elk, and Black Bear that were lawfully harvested in Pennsylvania through fair chase methods will be accepted for scor-

Are you a farmer or land owner that has a deer problem?

I have a group of 5 adults and 3 youth hunters that would be happy to meet with you. Our adult hunters (mentors) have over 100 years of hunting experience between them. We are mainly looking to hunt the archery season, but would consider other seasons if the land owner wishes. We are looking for an opportunity to help farmers and allow our hunters to fill their deer tags this fall. We would not be opposed to a doe only arrangement, if that is what the owner wishes. Please contact Anthony Segraves at 570-772-3711 if you are interested.
