Pocos inmigrantes hispanos en los Estados Unidos han sido tan golpeados por las autoridades de Justicia como Natividad de Jesús Hernández, el inmigrante salvadoreño para quien la Navidad en dos ocasiones ha sido muerte y dolor. En la mañana del 26 de diciembre de 2013 mientras conducía por una de las calles de Marysville su minivan en compañía de sus tres niños, uno de ellos, de 4 años, Angel Gustabo, abrió la puerta del vehículo y cayó al pavimento. De inmediato Natividad detuvo la marcha del vehículo y permaneció a un la lado de la vía a la espera de ayuda junto a su hijo accidentado. Minutos después llegaron los paramédicos y una unidad de la Ohio Highway Patrol, quienes llevaron al niño al hospital. Angel falleció pocos minutos después de su ingreso a la clínica.

gico accidente. Las autoridades lo detuvieron y lo condujeron a prisión porque supuestamente había abandonado la escena del accidente sin dar declaraciones a las autoridades.

La madre del niño había sido deportada meses antes a su país de origen, en Centroamérica. Y Natividad ahora estaba en prisión, con otros dos niños sin padre ni madre. Cuando se presentó en corte del condado Union (Union County Common Pleas Court) se le formularon cargos por homicidio agravado de vehículos, homicidio involuntario, dos cargos por falsificación y otro cargo por abandonar la escena del accidente. El Procurador de la corte, David Phillips, también acusó a Hernández de provocar el accidente por estar robando desechos metálicos en una zona de construcción. Natividad podría enfrentar hasta 13 años de prisión si era encontrado culpable y tenía una fianza pendiente de 500 mil dólares para su
libertad condicional. El abogado de Natividad, Scott Culbert, demostró al juez que su defendido nunca abandonó la escena del accidente, como luego reveló la imagen de un video captado por la propia patrulla, en el que se le observa junto a su hijo al llegar los paramédicos y llevarlo en sus brazos hasta la ambulancia. En el video se observa que mientras la ambulancia se aleja y el patrullero se va tras de ella, Natividad permanece unos minutos en el lugar. El juez entonces redujo a $100 mil la fianza y permitió en mayo de 2014 la puesta en libertad condicional de Natividad. Pocos meses después conoce a la mexicana Irene Ochoa, con quien decide formar una nueva familia. Hace un mes nació Rosa Ilma, la hija de
ambos, pero el dolor volvió a tocar las puertas de Natividad. Una agente de la oficina de Inmigración ordenó su apresamiento porque supuestamente durante los meses que ha estado en libertad condicional nunca se ha presentado en la oficina de ella, como supuestamente era su deber. Natividad dice cada lunes se presentaba en la oficina de Inmigración y cada semana un oficial de Inmigración lo visitaba en su casa para la supervisión de su libertad condicional. Una vez detenido volvió ante el juez, quien le enrostró que por haber mentido a las autoridades de Inmigración tenía que regresarlo a prisión. Espera presentarse en corte el 11 de enero para que su caso sea juzgado.

On the morning of December 26, 2013, while driving through a Marysville street in his minivan with his three children, one of them – four-year-old Angel Gustabo – opened the door of the vehicle and fell onto the pavement. Immediately, Natividad stopped the vehicle and stayed on the side of the street waiting for help with his injured son. Minutes later, paramedics and the Ohio Highway Patrol reached the scene and took the child to the hospital. Angel died shortly after arrival.
The mother of the child was deported months before to her country of origin in Central America. And Natividad was now in prison, with two other children without their parents.

When he faced the Union County Common Pleas Court, he was charged with aggravated vehicular manslaughter, involuntary manslaughter, forgery, and abandoning the scene of an accident. Prosecutor David Phillips also accused Natividad of provoking the accident because he was stealing metallic waste from a construction zone.
Natividad could have faced up to 13 years in prison if he was found guilty and had a $500,000 bail. Natividad’s attorney, Scott Culbert, demonstrated to the judge that his client did not abandon the scene of the accident, as was later revealed by a dashcam video recording from the OHP patrol car, where he was observed next to his son when the paramedics arrived and taking him in his arms into the ambulance. The video also shows that Natividad remains a few minutes at the scene while the ambulance leaves followed by the OHP officer. The judge then reduced Natividad’s bail to $100,000 and sentenced him to probation in May 2014.
A few months later, Natividad meets Mexican-born Irene Ochoa, with whom he decides to form a new family. Rosa Ilma, their daughter, was born a month ago, but heartbreak once again knocked Natividad’s door. An immigration agent ordered his apprehension because he allegedly never met with his probation officer while serving his sentence, as it was supposedly his obligation. Natividad says that he went to the immigration office every Monday and every week he was visited by an immigration officer to supervise his probation. Once detained, Natividad once again faced the judge, who told him that he had to be sent again to prison because he lied to immigration authorities. Trial is scheduled for January 11.

Few people are so familiar with life on both sides of the US-Mexican border as Oscar Hagelsieb. As the child of illegal immigrants and a former US Border Patrol official, Hagelsieb is personally aware of the boundary both as an obstacle against opportunity and as a 1,954-mile long line of protection. Hagelsieb, whose story is featured in the recently released documentary Kingdom of Shadows, grew up in the outskirts of El Paso, Texas and knew from an early age that he wanted to work in border patrol. But he was nervous about what his parents would think, and asked his father’s permission before he started the role. “My dad’s my biggest hero and I didn’t want to disappoint him or offend him. He had crossed illegally several times and I didn’t know what
his opinion was of border control,” Hagelsieb tells Quartz. “My parents didn’t want better lives for themselves—for them it would have been more convenient for them to stay in Mexico with their home and family—but for their children, for us.” Remarkably, Hagelsieb’s father recognized the difficulty of his son’s decision, and encouraged him to take the job. “He said that the border patrol and
federal law enforcement needed individuals like me to humanize the experience,” says Hagelsieb. His parents eventually managed to legalize their immigration status in the US, and so their presence in the country didn’t directly conflict with Hagelsieb’s work. But when he started working as a border patrol agent in Fabens, Texas in 2000, Hagelsieb had to stop several families, just like his own, who
were travelling to the US for the sake of their children. He refuses to be drawn on whether US immigration law needs to be tweaked. “I have no opinion one way or the other,” he says. “As a federal agent, I uphold the laws that lawmakers pass.” But Hagelsieb says that, though that aspect of his job was difficult, he found a way to cope when he had to stop families:
Lots of them have mortgages, they’ve put their farms up for sale in order to afford being smuggled into the United States. So in a sense you’re shattering their dream. But I was also able to explain to them, in their language, that there are legal ways of immigrating into the United States. I gave them a sense of hope that it wasn’t all despair and that they would be able to immigrate legally. Hagelsieb, now 42 years old, wanted to protect the US-Mexican border because, as a teenager in El Paso, he saw so many friends in jail or dead after they were caught smuggling drugs. And with his tattoos, goatee, and beloved motorcycle, Hagelsieb was soon recruited to work undercover. In 2001, he became a special agent in El Paso’s anti-smuggling unit. “Since I grew up in the area where the cartels op-
erate, I understood the lingo, I knew the game,” he says. Hagelsieb’s helped infiltrate large drug cartels and dismantle a ruthless human smuggling operation, rising up the ranks to assistant special agent in charge of Homeland Security Investigations in El Paso. Hagelsieb’s looks mean he’s not always treated with the same respect as other federal agents, and often faces intense questioning at airport security. “I don’t dress and I don’t look like a federal agent, so I break the stereotype of what a federal agent is. El que estén regresando más inmigrantes a México de los que llegaban en los últimos años es mala noticia para la economía de Estados Unidos, afirmó hoy aquí el diario californiano Los Angeles Times. “La salida neta de mexicanos que han regresado a su país en la última década, incluida la llegada de un menor número de indocumentados, muestran obsoletas las conversaciones políticas sobre la migración”, destacó el rotativo, uno de los periódicos con mayor influencia en California. En un despacho aparecido en la sección editorial se abordó el reciente reporte del Centro de Investigaciones Pew, que confirmó una reducción significativa de inmigrantes mexicanos en la última década. Alrededor de un millón de mexicanos y sus familias, incluidos sus hijos nacidos en Estados Unidos, regresaron a México en ese lustro, frente a los 870 mil que llegaron a este país en el mismo periodo, un flujo migratorio de mexicanos a la baja de 140 mil, indicó el estudio de Pew,

El incremento en la llegada de cubanos ocurre de manera paulatina desde el anuncio de los gobiernos de Washington y La Habana, el 17 de diciembre pasado, de normalizar relaciones diplomáticas. El gobierno de Cuba hace amagos de que les va a permitir algunas libertades económicas y cuando empiezan algún negocio pequeño los reprime”, dijo Ramón Saúl Sánchez, líder del Movimiento Democracia. “El gobierno de Cuba no quiere que el ciudadano cubano se empodere económicamente y sigue la represión escalando cuando las personas protestan”, afirmó el activista.

Muslims and Hispanics: One Problem, Two Parts
The errors, excesses, and abuses of the campaign of Republican candidate Donald Trump also offer a great opportunity for acquiring positive knowledge: 1. It teaches us that the so-called social minorities in the United States – African-Americans, Hispanic immigrants of any race, and the disabled – have lesser value than the rest of the population. 2. It teaches us that racism is still prevalent within a wide swath of American society. It was believed to be a disappearing phenomenon. 3. It teaches us that American society is more opinionated and rebellious than in previous years and reacts against abuse and discrimination. All in all, the best of the worst of Donald Trump’s campaign is that it demonstrates that hate and intolerance do not triumph over good and democratic values in the United States of America.

Let’s not beat around the bush. What happened in France last month was not on the same scale as 9/11. Not that many died. No building came down. But the short-term effect, which is the suffering of many and fear among so many others, is exactly the same. There were other perpetrators this time, but the tactic is the same. And on the longer term, the great lesson for the governments of the world has not changed, either: something has to be done against Islamic radicalism. But here is where some things have to be exposed. If you are one of those who rant on Facebook against all Muslims, without exception, or if you think that it is a good idea to make things difficult for the Syrian and Iraqi refugees that make it to the US, as if they had nothing else to worry about, you are indirectly sharing the same sentiment against Hispanic immigrants that Donald Trump and his supporters have taken to dangerous heights. Because both issues have the same origin:
the nationalist sentiment that exists in ill-informed or misinformed sectors of the American people, incessantly reproduced in social media. The fear that terrorists have infiltrated the mass of refugees may be founded, but it is not possible for some to pay for the debts of others. And it looks bad coming from a political party that portrays Christian morality – which obliges its practitioners to be compassionate with those who suffer, like Jesus did – as the true and definitive foundation of society. An opinión shared by some analysts, and that deserves to be seriously considered, is that the terrorist attack in France has a long-term objective, very defined and sinister: to alienate and isolate Muslims from the society in which they live so that they accept the idea that their only solution is to join the Islamic State as soldiers in its war against all of us. The Republican Party easily fell into that trap because its negative predisposition regarding the Hispanic immigration issue also led to those at-
titudes of suspicion and distrust toward the Syrian and Iraqi refugees, attitudes which many Americans extend without difficulty to all the Muslim community. It is time for the Hispanic community of Ohio and in the rest of the US to see itself in the Syrian and Iraqi refugees (many of which are orphan children), but in the Muslim community. Culture, experiences, and especially religion are different in both communities, but they share the same desire to belong to this country and contribute to it while keeping the particular characteristics that make them unique in the world. It is untenable to continue protesting against Donald Trump’s insulting words against Mexican immigrants without seeing them now in the case of these refugees. Injustice against one is injustice against all. All this should make us think about what to do finally against Islamic radicalism, and both Republicans and Democrats have presented concrete ideas. That is another story.

Los demócratas y los inmigrantes frente a los ataques republicanos

A lo largo de los años, he sido testigo del compromiso y la dedicación de los inmigrantes al único país que consideran suyo. Es el amor que compartimos por Estados Unidos el que me llevó a luchar arduamente por años para lograr la aprobación de una reforma migratoria en el Senado en 2013 y dedicarle más tiempo a este tema que a cualquier otro durante mi carrera. La incorporación de los inmigrantes siempre ha sido importante para nuestro crecimiento y éxito como nación. Los demócratas lo reconocen y han luchado arduamente para proteger a las familias trabajadoras.
A principios de este mes, tuve el honor de reunirme con Miguel Aguilar, mediocampista del D.C. United para hablar sobre cómo el programa de Acción Diferida para los Llegados en la Infancia (DACA, por sus siglas en inglés) del presidente Obama —del que el jugador es beneficiado— está permitiendo que miles de jóvenes como él logren sus metas y contribuyan más a sus comunidades y a nuestro país. Hoy, gracias a DACA, jóvenes como Miguel viven sin miedo
a la deportación y tiene la oportunidad de convertirse en doctores, emprendedores e incluso deportistas profesionales. Desafortunadamente, los republicanos están haciendo todo lo posible para lastimar a las familias inmigrantes. Esta semana, los republicanos en el Senado lanzaron su más reciente ataque en contra de los inmigrantes en Estados Unidos, esta vez en contra de las llamadas “ciudades santuario”. Esta vil legislación podría ser llamada el proyecto de ley
“Donald Trump”. Como la repugnante e indignante retórica promovida por Donald Trump, sataniza a los inmigrantes, pinta a todos como “criminales y violadores” y promueve la discriminación y el prejuicio. Esta legislación antiinmigrante, patrocinada por el senador David Vitter, republicano por Luisiana, y copatrocinada por los senadores Rubio y Cruz, castigaría a las ciudades que no cooperan con el Servicio de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas (ICE,

Ser republicano significa defender y apoyar un sistema político que protege la libertad con el derecho, con la ley, que no puede ser ignorada por el propio gobierno. Este sistema se denomina republicanismo y pretende que exista una clara y mayoritaria participación ciudadana (lo que más comúnmente se conoce como “pueblo”), resaltando los valores cívicos y oponiéndose a la corrupción. En términos más formales, el republicanismo pone el énfasis en la naturaleza interactiva de toda la vida social. El ideal republicano está enfocado hacia un imperio
de la ley, un valor hacia las instituciones públicas, una serie de virtudes cívicas, la libertad como autonomía y un gran interés por la renovación de la vida política. La filosofía republicana acepta y defiende la reivindicación moderna de autonomía y el pluralismo. Cómo vemos, el republicano considera la libertad un valor primordial.
Ésta es llamada, en muchas ocasiones, libertad de los antiguos (positiva o activa), es decir, la libertad de los ciudadanos y ciudadanas como participantes en el gobierno. No defiende la llamada libertad de los modernos (negativa o pasiva), es decir la libertad de gozar de una esfera de acción a salvo de interferencias ajenas. Esta última es la única definición
que la mayoría tenemos por libertad. El concepto específico de libertad es el de no dominación, no consiste en la ausencia de restricciones, sino en la garantía frente a la interferencia caprichosa de los demás, proporcionada por la ley. La ley es constitutiva de libertad, pero no todas las leyes, sino aquélla que requiere instituciones de una co-

Mientras los demócratas han propuesto un plan integral para reparar nuestro roto sistema migratorio — uno que une a las familias, fortalece las comunidades e impulsa nuestra economía— los republicanos en ambas cámaras del Congreso han votado en más de media docena de ocasiones para separar a las familias inmigrantes y deportar a los DREAMers. Los republicanos siguen entercados con su única estrategia de política migratoria: la deportación masiva.
Si los republicanos se salieran con la suya, millones de familias serían separadas. Para un partido que afirma ser el partido de los ‘valores familiares’, los republicanos demuestran poca preocupación por las familias y los valores en su plan migratorio. ciones construidas por la voluntad de la ciudadanía, convirtiéndose así, en una comunidad abierta y plural. Este, mis amigos es el verdadero significado del ser un republicano. No confundamos candidatos ni partidos con ideal, ya que en su mayoría no representa estos ideales. De esta manera tenemos que tener en mente que el sentimiento republicano lo perseguimos todos. With legal aid, immigrant advocates turn focus to citizenship This election season, Sandra Ocampo is running her own campaign. By Liz Robbins The New York Time
Last week, Ms. Ocampo, 21, who immigrated from Nicaragua to Yonkers five years ago, showed up at a citizenship drive sponsored by the Northern Manhattan Coalition for Immigrant Rights in Inwood. After having her photo taken at a nearby travel agency, Ms. Ocampo did a celebratory dance. “Sandra’s going to be an American citizen,” she said in Spanish. “Donald Trump, you are not going to win.” With anti-immigrant sentiment soaring among Republican presidential candidates, and immigration reform stalled in Congress and the courts, New York advocacy groups, with the support of the Obama administration, are redoubling their efforts in one area they can control: citizenship. They are pushing to convert as many of the country’s 8.8 million green card holders as possible into naturalized Americans. The influence of the Latino voting bloc has added impetus to the drive. According to Latino Decisions, a polling and research firm, 80 percent of naturalized Latino citizens voted for President Obama in 2012. In New York State, there are approximately 915,000 legal permanent residents, more than 317,400 of whom are Latino, according to the Center for Migration Studies. Nationally, nearly a third of legal permanent residents eligible to become citizens are Mexicans, a particular target of Mr. Trump, a Republican presidential candidate, who has accused them of bringing drugs and crime into the United States and of being rapists. This month, there were 14 citizenship events across the city compared with the usual eight, according to local advocacy groups. The events were held at college campuses, union headquarters, libraries, hospitals and the offices of community organizations in Hispanic and Asian neighborhoods. A recent ruling by the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit on the programs, citizens to remain in the country legally, at least temporarily, and expanding the existing program for immigrants brought to the United States illegally as children. Those policies have been blocked by legal challenges. “There’s something in the air saying that they’re coming for you, and that you better get as solid as you can,” said Allan Wernick, the director and co-founder of CUNY Citizenship Now, a legal assistance program operated across the City University of New York system. Mr. Wernick said that the CUNY citizenship clinics were fully booked — at 130 spots — in November, with no room for walk-ins as there was just six months ago. Around this time last year, groups like CUNY Citizenship Now and the Northern Manhattan Coalition for Immigrant Rights had prepared for a crush of applicants eligible for one of Mr. Obama’s programs. But when the executive actions were stopped by court injunction, the crowds never came.
A recent ruling by the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit on the programs, which the Supreme Court could take up next year, spurred immigrant advocacy groups to mobilize. “There was a concerted effort around the anniversary anyway, and the fact that the ruling came out the week before the anniversary only added to the interest,” said Roberto Frugone, the Northeast regional director for civic engagement at the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials Educational Fund, or Naleo.
On a recent Saturday, Naleo sponsored an event with Unite Here Local 100, a union for hospitality and food-service workers in New York and New Jersey. The New York Immigration Coalition provided legal support. A total of 96 green card holders applied to start the citizenship process at a fair in the Manhattan offices of the union, which billed the event as a “response to the Fifth Circuit Court’s decision.” Tahisha Bourdier, 25, is a paralegal who was volunteering at the event and also applying for citizenship. She moved to New
York from the Dominican Republic when she was 2. As a legal permanent resident, she said, she cannot get government jobs or even be a notary. “I feel like I have a lot of family members who have been deported through being immigrants and I think it will eventually get as hard for a legal resident,” she said. The presidential campaign was another factor in her decision. “Now I feel like it’s a must,” she said. “Every vote is a voice.” In the end, though, only 38 of the day’s applicants were able to move forward, Mr. Frugone said. Most of the others were not proficient enough in English to pass the citizenship exam, which requires an applicant to answer basic questions orally, write a sentence and pass a civics test. Some older immigrants who have not learned English wait for the precise moment when they have lived in the United States for 20 years and are older than 50; at that point, they can take the test in their own language.
Jose Miguel Toledo Madera, 53, a resident of Washington Heights in Manhattan, said he had been too busy working as a custodian to learn English. After six hours at the Unite Here citizenship drive, he finally finished his application by taking photos. In addition to supporting registration drives, the government appears to have sped up the processing time for applications in New York City, according to several immigration lawyers. Those applications, the lawyers said, were being processed in two to three months, less than the national average of five months and faster than the six to 12 months it took just four years ago. The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services said it could not confirm the accelerated application times in New York, but it did describe how, since September, it hadexpanded programs to promote citizenship, including online test preparation materials and the option to pay the $680 fee by credit card. The Northern Manhattan Coalition for Immigrant Rights started its Citizenship Thursdays program in April, in response to the legal challenges to Mr. Obama’s executive orders. Since then, it has helped nearly 400 people seeking naturalization assistance. In November alone, 90 applicants came in, twice the number from a year earlier. The drives have brought together a diverse group of immigrants from Africa, the Middle East and Latin America, representing a wide range of ages. But they are united in purpose. “I want to vote so that we can have a better situation in the country for all the immigrants, for all the people we actually need in this country,” Dinelsa Quezada Martinez, 70, said in Spanish in the organization’s offices. “I want a president that’s really going to worry and take care of our country and all the people in this country.”

¿Por qué aparece la resaca? El Sol de Ohio Special Report
Tanto si consumes alcohol con regularidad, por ejemplo en fines de semana o de manera ocasional en alguna ocasión especial, y en algún momento te has excesivo en su consumo, lo cierto es que es normal que ya hayas sufrido las consecuencias y los síntomas más habituales de la resaca. Y es que, cuando hablamos de ella, nos referimos a esos síntomas –desagradables, todo hay que decirlo- que una persona tiende a experimentar horas después de haber tomado mucho alcohol. Se trata, por tanto, de un cuadro sintomático de malestar general que aparece como consecuencia de un consumo excesivo de bebidas alcohólicas, aunque este cuadro no es lo suficientemente grave como para que se produzca un coma etílico, que puede causar la muerte por depresión respiratoria. • Dolor de cabeza o cefalea, que aparece como consecuencia de la disminución del azúcar en la sangre (glucosa), por la dilatación de los vasos sanguíneos o por la deshidratación de las meninges.
¿Quién no ha tenido una cruda alguna vez?
• Sed intensa, debido a la deshidratación causada en el organismo por la degradación del alcohol. • Problemas gástricos y digestivos, ya que las bebidas alcohólicas ocasionan una erosión de la mucosa gástrica, así como una pérdida de la vello-
sidad intestinal. Pueden surgir sobre todo vómitos, y de forma rara diarrea. También pueden aparecer flatulencias. • Dolores abdominales y musculares, que cursan con sensación de debilidad y malestar general. • Pérdida de la memoria
o amnesia ligera, sobre todo durante el episodio etílico. ¿Por qué aparece la resaca? • La aparición de la resaca la encontramos sobre todo en el consumo excesivo de alcohol, como consecuencia del proceso
de deshidratación que sufre nuestro cuerpo. Dado que el alcohol inhibe el buen funcionamiento de las vasopresinas (unas hormonas con acción antidiurética que controlan la reabsorción de moléculas de agua mediante la concentración de la orina).
Cuando bebemos alcohol, el agua es eliminada al orinar en mayor cantidad y abundancia, por lo que se eliminan más sales minerales y otros compuestos importantísimos para nuestro organismo. • En este sentido, la causa la distinguimos especialmente en la presencia de unas sustancias residuales que se generan durante el proceso de obtención del alcohol, destacando sobre el metanol, la histamina, determinados polifenoles y el acetaldehído. • Al descomponerse producen otras sustancias tóxicas, ponzoñosas y/o venenosas, las cuales son luego las responsables de la aparición de los síntomas. Estas sustancias las encontramos en mayor cantidad en bebidas alcohólicas de color más oscuro o bebidas espirituosas menos destiladas, tales como el coñac, vino tinto, ron, whisky, ginebra, vodka y vino blanco. • Aunque consumir alcohol de forma ocasional, especialmente en momentos puntuales y especiales, no es del todo negativo para tu salud, recuerda que lo que sí es contraproducente es un consumo excesivo. En ayunas toma agua tibia con limón El agua tibia con limón, tomado en ayunas, es un excelente remedio desintoxicante, que te ayuda a eliminar las toxinas e impurezas que se han acumulado en tu organismo como consecuencia del consumo abusivo de alcohol. Además, te resultará útil para regular tu metabolismo de forma eficaz. Por otro lado, es interesante para prevenir –y evitarla acción de los radicales libres, gracias a su acción antioxidante. Para hacer el agua de limón caliente sólo tienes que poner el equivalente a un vaso de
agua en un cazo y llevar a ebullición. Mientras, lava bien un limón ecológico u orgánico, pártelo por la mitad y exprímelo para obtener su jugo. Cuando el agua hierva retira del agua, sirve en un vaso o taza y deja que se enfríe un poco. Finalmente añade el zumo de limón y bebe. 2. A la hora del desayu-

Sopas con acción rehidratante Dado que el consumo de alcohol causa deshidratación, uno de los objetivos básicos para aliviar y tratar la resaca lo encontramos en volver nuevamente a hidratar el organismo. En este sentido puedes optar por maravillosas sopas con acción rehidratante, que ayudan precisamente a aportar hidratación al organismo. 4. Infusiones medicinales con acción rehidratante Además de las sopas y caldos sobre las que te hemos hablado anteriormente, puedes optar también por determinadas infusiones medicinales que te ayudarán a reducir los síntomas más molestos de la resaca: Infusión de manzanilla Es una infusión interesante por sus cualidades gástricas y digestivas. Para
elaborarla solo necesitas una cucharadita de flores de manzanilla seca y el equivalente a una taza de agua. Pon el agua en un cazo y lleva a ebullición. Antes de que empiece a hervir añade la manzanilla, y deja hirviendo durante 3 minutos. Pasado este tiempo apaga el fuego, tapa y deja en reposo otros 2 minutos. Cuela y bebe. Infusión de poleo Al igual que la manzanilla, el poleo es interesante en caso de resaca por sus cualidades carminativas (ayuda a expulsar los gases), calma el dolor de estómago y además estimula el hígado. Para hacer la infusión sigue los mismos pasos indicados en la receta de infusión de manzanilla sobre la que te hablábamos anteriormente, pero sustituye la cucharadita de manzanilla por la cucharadita de pomelo. Reports of an E. coli outbreak associated with Chipotle have led to trouble for the popular burrito chain. The latest report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that the outbreak has infected 45 people; 16 have ended up in the hospital. Health departments are not recommending that consumers avoid Chipotle. The CDC is not advising people to avoid the restaurant; the agency does, however, ask people to report symptoms if they eat there and end up sick. The California Department of Health, the Minnesota Department of Health, and New York State’s Erie County Department of Health all told us specifically that they are not recommending that residents avoid Chipotle. (Health departments in other affected states did not offer comment by press time.) Doug Shultz, a spokesperson for the Minnesota Department of Health, told us that “the risk of food-
borne illness from eating at a Chipotle restaurant is likely no greater than normal.” Chipotle has actively worked to fix the problem. “The restaurant chain has been very pro-active in assisting with the investiga-
tion,” Jay-Russell noted. Since the first E. coli reports began rolling in, “the company has taken major steps in cleaning and sanitation, replacing ingredients, and supply chain management,” LeeAnn Jaycus, a professor of food science at NC State University who has been
following reports from public health authorities, told us. Shultz noted that Chipotle has thrown away potentially contaminated ingredients, “taken steps to sanitize each facility,” and put into place a number of other measures. Chipotle is “redoubling our effor-
ts to be sure our restaurants are adhering to our food safety practices, and implementing a number of improvements to our practices throughout our system, from the farms that supply our food to our restaurants,” Arnold, the Chipotle spokesperson, told us.
So what should you do? Public health authorities have essentially said there’s no reason to alter your Chipotle habit, and the food safety experts we spoke to said it really came down to personal choice. Jay-Russell, of UC Davis, pointed out that consumers — especially anyone who is already frail or sick — should in general avoid the foods with the highest risk of foodborne illness: undercooked meat, poultry, eggs, and fish. But in the case of Chipotle, “since the restaurant is taking action, the risk should be much reduced since they are now aware of the problem,” she said. Como veterano maratonista que ha participado en 21 competencias, este Obispo en Estados Unidos explica el profundo vínculo que existe entre su fe católica y el deporte, y asegura que esta conexión puede incluso servir para evangelizar a los jóvenes. “Si queremos que aspiren a una vida de santidad, tenemos que darle a los jóvenes buenos ejemplos de eso”, dijo a ACI Prensa el Obispo de Springfield en Illinois (Estados Unidos), Mons. Thomas Paprocki. “Alguien tiene que ser un modelo a seguir no solo en términos de sus logros atléticos, sino también sus logros espirituales”, dijo. “Y si tienes ambos, entonces eso es lo mejor de los dos mundos porque el joven va a mirar a ese atleta exitoso y decir ‘wow, esta persona es exitosa en su deporte. Y es también un creyente. Y si esa persona es un creyente, bien en-

For more than 17 years, a Catholic nun named Neyda Rojas has been serving God in a place that many describe as hell on earth a Venezuelan prison. For decades, penitentiaries here have been criticised by human rights organisations for allowing serious human rights violations to take place behind their walls. Although the government has introduced reforms to improve living conditions, some Venezuelan prisons are still among the most violent and overcrowded in Latin America. None of that has stopped this missionary, who belongs to the Mercedarian Order, help teach inmates some of the basics of life, like literacy. “I’m very happy when they learn to read and write. I can see their excitement.
“It also means they can understand what official documents say about them and their trials”, the 52year-old nun said. “I have always seen the face of God in their faces”, she said on our way to Venezuela’s General Penitentiary (PGV) in Guarico state, a threehour drive away from the capital Caracas. We accompanied Sister
Neyda to one of her workshops after the BBC was granted rare access to the prison. Although the exterior of the prison is guarded by the Venezuela’s National Guard and it has a prison director and staff from the Ministry of Penitentiary Affairs, effectively it’s the inmates who are in charge on the inside. The prisoners have we-
apons, a clear leadership structure and a strict set of rules. Those who do not follow these rules often pay with their lives, human rights groups and former inmates say. The PGV was built to hold 750 prisoners but at the time of our visit there were around 3,000 inmates. With her charisma and
perseverance, Sister Neyda has won the inmates’ trust. It is a very dangerous and unpredictable place where violence is rife, but she walks around unafraid, as if she was untouchable. “I am sure they will never shoot me. God is with me. They will never do anything against me. In fact, they protect me”, she says. Although she acknowledges that many of the inmates have committed serious crimes, she cannot stop seeing them as “God’s children”. “They’ve lost their freedom, but not their dignity. As a Mercedarian missionary who works in a jail, I have to serve them every day.” When I asked her how she felt around the inmates, she touched my arm and told me with a kind smile that they were close to her heart. “Many of them have been abandoned. But they have
us. I am the voice of men who have no voice.” Two armed young inmates were guarding the entrance the day I entered the prison with Sister Neyda. “Good morning, my son, and God bless you,” she said, looking them in the eyes and shaking their hands. They replied “Amen, Sister” and waved her in, no questions asked. She is known as La Gota Blanca (The White Drop) because of the colour of her nun’s habit. As she walks through the jail, you can hear prisoners shouting: “Put your shirts on!” Like lightning, every barebacked prisoner obeys, out of respect for the visiting nun who, for years, has been part of the jail’s teaching staff. “Come and spend a nice afternoon with me. Pro-lifers debunk Texas study claiming increase in at-home abortions Special Report

El Sol de Ohio The University of Texas published a study in November linking the state’s abortion facility regulations to the number of women self-inducing abortions. But according to pro-lifers, the study was motivated by a pro-abortion agenda and is based on “egregious” errors. Released by the Texas Policy Evaluation Project, the study came out just four days after the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to hear a challenge to Texas abortion facility regulations enacted in 2013. The law requires abortionists to obtain admitting privileges at hospitals within 30 miles of their facilities. It also holds abortion facilities to the same building standards as out-patient surgical centers. Since 2012, abortion facilities in Texas have decreased from 41 to 17. According to the study, between 1.7 percent and 4.1 percent of Texas wo-

Hace algún tiempo, cuando Hillsong United hizo eso, dividió opiniones. Ahora la Iglesia Destiny Metropolitan Worship, de Atlanta, Estados Unidos, volvió virales unos videos donde se cantan versiones góspel de canciones seculares de los raperos Drake y Future. La iglesia toma la melodía secular para luego cristianizarla con letra cristiana. La canción “Hotline Bling”, que es popular en los EE.UU. Actualmente, habla de sexo, pero en la versión de Destiny Metropolitan se habla de lo mucho que Dios nos ama. El video con la versión góspel de “Big Rings”, de Drake y Future también se
volvió viral en las redes sociales. No es tan común que se cante rap en los servicios de adoración. Por lo que Will Gravely, uno de los pastores Destiny Metropolitan concedió una entrevista a la página web de la revista Complex. Él dijo que hace unos años la iglesia se ha tornado “sensible a los que buscan”, un concepto popularizado por el libro de “Una Iglesia con Propósito”, del pastor Rick Warren. Mientras ellos dicen ser “conservadores” cuando se trata del sermón, decidieron hacer cambios en los servicios de adoración optando por una experiencia más contemporánea. Guatemala habilita refugios ante posible temporada de frío severa Autoridades de protección civil guatemaltecas habilitaron más de 80 albergues para asistir a la población en riesgo ante el ingreso de 14 frentes fríos y la posibilidad de temperaturas de hasta siete grados bajo cero. La Coordinadora Nacional para la Reducción de Desastres (Conred) indicó este día que se tienen listos en principio 81 albergues para la época fría, a fin de brindar refugio a personas afectadas por el descenso de la temperatura. El vocero de la Conred, David de León, dijo que desde el fin de semana se activó el Plan Nacional de Gestión Integral del Riesgo por la Temporada de Descenso de Temperatura 2015–2016. Luego de que finalizó de manera oficial la temporada invernal o de lluvias 2015 (mayo-noviembre), se tomaron las medidas institucionales a nivel nacional para resguardar a la población en la temporada de frío que se estima finalizará en marzo próximo, indicó. La institución señaló que cada noviembre “se registra el acercamiento de Sistemas de Alta Presión –Frentes Fríos-“ a Guatemala, condición que provoca el descenso drástico de temperatura. De León dijo que se estima que en la temporada, Guatemala estaría ante los efectos de 14 frentes fríos, además de las temperaturas mínimas de entre menos siete a menos cinco grados centígrados que se pronostican para la región del altiplano. Conred precisó que se enfrentarán las bajas temperaturas, una vez que “por la influencia de Alta Presión de categoría débil que modula el clima” desde el 24 de noviembre se dio por finalizada la época de lluvia en la mayoría de las regiones del país. La temporada de lluvias en Guatemala causó al menos 290 fallecidos y afectó a más de un millón de personas solo desde octubre pasado.

La Suprema Corte de Justicia de Estados Unidos declinó acoger la demanda de tres estados mexicanos que buscaban indemnización por daños causados en el Golfo de México por el derrame de la plataforma “Deepwater Horizon” en 2010. La demanda de los estados mexicanos de Veracruz, Tamaulipas y Quintana Roo, fue presentada en 2013 y fue negada tanto por una corte distrital ese año como por la Corte del Quinto Circuito de Apelaciones de Nueva Orleans en mayo pasado. La lista oficial de apelaciones que no serán escuchadas por la Suprema Corte de Justicia incluyó una sola línea con la decisión del máximo tribunal estadunidense. Los tres estados mexicanos entablaron su demanda original en el estado de Texas en septiembre de 2010 y consolidadas en una demanda en el estado de Louisiana, donde pedían compensación económica por el derrame de petróleo causado por
el accidente de la “Deepwater Horizon”. Las empresas acusadas en la demanda incluyeron a BP, como propietaria y operadora; Transocean, como dueña de la plataforma; Halliburton, como contratista del cemento; Andrako, como copropietaria, y Cameron, fabricante del sistema de prevención de accidentes. Los tres estados mexicanos argumentaron que dejaron de recibir impuestos y tarifas debido a la reducción de la actividad pesquera en el Golfo
de México, así como una baja en la actividad turística y un incremento en los servicios públicos. Las empresas fueron por ello acusadas de “negligencia significativa” en la conducción de sus actividades de exploración petrolera. La demanda surgió luego que BP financió un fondo de indemnizaciones de 20 mil millones de dólares, pero no incluyó a entidades extranjeras. En septiembre de 2013, una corte de distrito falló a favor de los demanda-
dos bajo el argumento legal de que los tres estados mexicanos carecían de un “interés suficiente” en el caso de contaminación petrolera. En mayo de 2015, el fallo de la corte distrital fue reafirmado bajo los mismos argumentos por la Corte de Apelaciones del Quinto Circuito, por lo que sólo restaba como último recurso la apelación ante la Corte Suprema, la cual declinó escuchar el caso por lo que se mantiene el fallo previo.
Macri asumirá presidencia de Argentina bajo proceso judicial El Sol de Ohio Special Report
Mauricio Macri será el primer presidente de la historia argentina que asumirá el gobierno bajo proceso, pues enfrenta una causa judicial que investiga el espionaje ilegal a políticos, líderes sociales, empresarios e incluso a familiares. A sabiendas de que su procesamiento ensombrece el inicio de la gestión que inicia el próximo 10 de diciembre, el presidente electo solicitó su sobreseimiento, es decir, desvinculación, del caso que encabeza el fiscal Sebastián Casanello. La incógnita es cómo actuará el magistrado ahora que el jefe de gobierno de Buenos Aires está a punto de convertirse en el hombre más poderoso del país. El caso comenzó en 2009, cuando Sergio Burstein, un líder de la comunidad judía, denunció que estaba siendo espiado telefónicamente por la Policía
Metropolitana de Buenos Aires. La justicia comprobó el espionaje, pero el escándalo aumentó cuando se descubrió que también habían sido espiados empresarios, diputados de oposición y, lo más sorprendente, el cuñado del jefe de gobierno, Daniel Leonardo, un hombre casado con Sandra Macri. A lo largo de la investigación se comprobó que el espía encargado de las operaciones era Ciro James, quien figuraba como
empleado del Ministerio de Educación del gobierno de Buenos Aires. La verdad era que James trabajaba a las órdenes de Jorge “Fino” Palacios, entonces jefe de la Policía Metropolitana que recién había creado Macri, quien tuvo que enfrentar una grave crisis política. Palacios dejó el cargo acosado por las denuncias de espionaje y por haber entorpecido la investigación del peor ataque terrorista de la historia argentina, ocurrido en un centro co-
munitario judío en julio de 1994 y que mató a 85 personas. Macri defendió siempre a Palacios, pero finalmente el excomisario se convirtió en uno de los principales acusados en el juicio por encubrimiento del atentado a la Asociación Mutual Israelita Argentina (AMIA). En su lugar, el jefe de gobierno designó a Osvaldo Chamorro, quien duró poco en el cargo porque también quedó involucrado en la red de espionaje.

NY program uses phone calls, text messages to teach English El Sol de Ohio Special Report
Candelaria Lopez had tried to learn English before, but it didn’t work. She couldn’t always make it to class, and when she could, it was hard to find the energy to sit through a three-hour session after her long days as a farmworker in New York’s Hudson Valley region. So even after 20 years in the United States, the Mexican immigrant was still pretty much only comfortable saying “Hi.” Not these days, though, thanks to a unique pilot English language learning program offered by New York state that works through phone calls and text messages. The 38year-old mother of four said she has had a whole new world open up for her in recent months — new responsibilities at work, talking to her daughter’s teacher without needing a translator, even helping another Spanish-speaking family find an apartment to rent.
“For me, it’s happy,” she said. “For me, it’s exciting.” New York state launched the pilot through its Office for New Americans earlier this year. The premise is simple — those who have signed up call a number whenever they want to hear recorded lessons. They are then asked questions they answer via text
messages to show they’ve understood what’s being taught. Get the questions right, move on to the next unit. Answer incorrectly, and a coach will call to help clarify the concept. It’s low-tech enough — no apps, no need for fancy smartphones. Anyone with even the most basic phone can access it and it is flexible enough that users can go at whatever speed they’re comfortable
with. It’s free of charge, aside from whatever their phone plans would charge for cell phone minutes or sending and receiving texts. “We really wanted to make this as accessible as possible,” said Jorge Montalvo, who oversees the Office for New Americans as deputy Secretary of State for Economic Opportunity. The goal for anyone who makes it through the entire
program would be to get to the point where “you’ll be doing well enough to pass the English requirement for the naturalization exam, that’s the level we’re looking at.” In this initial program, about 300 people signed up in three parts of the state — the Hudson Valley, the New York City area, and the Finger Lakes/North Country region. Montalvo said the state would see how it was going after about a year to figure out any plans for expansion. New York is the first state to fund a cell phone language learning program for immigrant populations like this, said Jessica Rothenberg-Aalami, CEO of Cell-Ed, the company providing the lessons. The San Francisco Bay Area company has been in business about two years, and Rothenberg-Aalami said it was trying to fill a need for adult education that worked in the modern world. The “demand is definitely not being met with classroom-based adult educa-
tion today,” she said. The flexibility was key for Lopez, who didn’t have to find childcare for her daughters or set aside time for a formal class. “This is only my phone,” she said. “It’s very easy, maybe I cook and I put on the class.” Rothenberg-Aalami said it took an average of about 25 hours to finish a level of classes; New York is offering Level I and Level II classes, as well as a citizenship class. This year the country will break record for attracting foreign tourism to exceed 31 million visits and revenues of over 17 billion dollars, said Tourism Minister, Enrique de la Madrid Cordero. “By this time it seems that we have passed the 31 million visitors from abroad, and exceed 17 billion dollars, which will also be a record,” the official said when inaugurating the third edition of the Global Forum of Mexican gastronomy. He explained further that last year the country also reached a high record in terms of attracting foreign tourists in respect to 2013, receiving 29.1 million visitors and one shed for 16 thousand 257 million dollars, according to figures from the Bank of Mexico. “Tourism is going well and has grown in recent years but it is time to see what else we can do to do better, what else can we do to promote it and what more we can do to streng-

An American woman who was jailed in Peru 20 years ago for aiding left-wing guerrillas is leaving Peru and returning to the United States. Lori Berenson, now 46, was found guilty of helping the Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement (MRTA) in 1996 and given a 20-year prison sentence. She was released on parole in 2010 but was barred from leaving Peru for good until her sentence expired. Berenson said she would travel to New York City to see her family. The former inmate said she would live with her parents until she had established herself. She had previously travelled to the US for a holiday but had returned to Peru under the terms of her parole agreement. Before leaving Peru for good, she told a local newspaper that she “wanted to express her deep sympathy for the victims of Peru’s internal armed
conflict, to which I was linked through my collaboration with the MRTA”. Berenson also asked those who “had been affected or offended by my words or deeds for forgiveness”. Berenson has been living in Lima with her six-yearold son since her release from prison on parole. She married former MRTA rebel Anibal Apari in jail in 2003 and gave birth to their son Salvador while in prison. The couple are no longer together. The daughter of university professors from New York, Berenson travelled to Central and South America in the 1990s. In Peru, she became involved with the Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement
(MRTA), which robbed banks, kidnapped and killed a number of people in the 1980s and 1990s. Berenson was arrested in November 1995 and accused of gathering information for a rebel plot to kidnap members of Peru’s Congress and exchange them for imprisoned rebel leaders. She was convicted of treason by a military court in 1996 and initially sentenced to life in prison. But amid US government pressure, Berenson was retried in a civilian court and found guilty of the lesser crime of terrorist collaboration. Her 20-year sentence lapsed on Sunday. Credit: BBC News.

Otterbein announces no increase in tuition for third year, expands popular financial aid program and introduces four new majors El Sol de Ohio Special Report
Otterbein University is strengthening its commitment to affordability and access by freezing tuition for the third consecutive year and expanding a popular financial aid program targeting Columbus City Schools into several other local school districts. There will be no increase in tuition for traditional full-time undergraduates for the 2016-2017 academic year. The tuition freeze was approved by the Otterbein Board of Trustees at its fall meeting on Oct. 24. Tuition rates for adult and graduate students will be decided at the Board’s February meeting. Additionally, Otterbein received an approval notice from the Ohio Department of Higher Education (ODHE) for four new majors on Oct. 23: business analytics, business and organizational communication, criminology and justice studies and educational studies. Students
can begin studying all of the new programs in the fall of 2016. “We are investing in students first by offering the majors they need to secure in-demand jobs of the future while making an Otterbein education affordable. In addition to offe-
ring new majors, Otterbein ensures success with ready access to dedicated faculty, unique student experiences beyond the classroom, and high levels of student engagement in the campus community,” said Otterbein University President Kathy Krendl.
Otterbein enrolls close to 2,400 undergraduates at its Westerville campus. This is the third year in a row the Board of Trustees voted to hold tuition steady. The expanded financial aid program, designed to allow low-income stu-
dents to live on campus and fully participate in the life of the campus, has not only increased enrollment from Columbus City Schools five hundred percent, it has increased the first year retention rate so that students from Columbus City Schools now
exceed the success rate of the campus as a whole. This program is now also being offered to low income students from Westerville City Schools, SouthWestern City Schools and Whitehall-Yearling School districts. “A freeze on tuition, coupled with our generous financial aid packages, will help many families pay less to attend Otterbein while still receiving the same quality and nationally-recognized programs and degrees,” said Jefferson BlackburnSmith, vice president for enrollment management. “Private schools can be just as affordable as public schools once all the factors are taken into account such as tuition, merit aid, scholarships and financial aid offerings. Anderson named Ohio professor of the year Ohio Wesleyan University professor Laurel J. “Laurie” Anderson, Ph.D., was named the 2015 Ohio Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). Una pareja de China, Cao Yuehua y Wang Deyi, decidieron festejar el aniversario número 70 de su boda, recreándola en el mismo sitio. Les ayudaron sus cuatro hijos: consiguieron un vestido similar, el velo y un ramo grande para la novia. Se conocieron en 1943 en una fiesta estudiantil en Yunnan. Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial a esta provincia fueron llevados los ciudadanos evacuados de China. Pronco Cao fue convocado al servicio militar y fue mandado en calidad de intérprete, primero a Myanmar y luego a la India. Wang permaneció en China. Cao regresó de la guerra en 1945. El mismo año se
casaron y desde entonces han sido inseparables 70 años después los esposos regresaron al mismo parque donde se casaron para recrear el momento más importante de sus vidas. “Pasaron por momentos difíciles, la guerra, varias
epidemias, y todavía se aman. Queremos ayudarles a guardar recuerdos de su amor“, dice el hijo menor del matrimonio, Cao Pangpei de 60 años. ”En una pareja siempre se deben cuidar mutuamente. Siempre pienso en ella, y ella en mí“, revela el se-
