Every day, in local and national press media, we see Hispanics participating in demonstrations and offering statements, confronting the anti-immigrant actions of President Donald Trump, under their real names. In Columbus, reality is extremely different. It is surprising because the Hispanic population in Central Ohio is estimated in 100,000 people, including the so-called “undocumented” immigrants. El Sol de Ohio visited several zones in Columbus to gather opinions among Hispanics about President Trump’s amti-immigrant actions and almost all those interviewed were fearful of speaking about the subject because of their migration status.

Fotos: Francis Campos

Mayor Ginther also said that the city supports constructive immigration reform on a national level Mayor Andrew Ginther said Monday that he will sign an executive order to support the settlement of refugees in Columbus. “Our immigrant population is part of the fabric of what makes Columbus so vibrant,” said Mayor Ginther. “They are our neighbors. We must not turn our backs on them, now or ever.” Mayor Ginther said he will issue an executive order this week that will support the resettlement of refugees to Columbus and prohibit the detention of anyone unless a warrant exists or a criminal violation was observed. In addition, the executive order will not allow city money, equipment or personnel to be used for detecting or apprehending someone or denying them city services based on
immigration status.
Mayor claims Cincinnati is ‘sanctuary city “Our
immigrant population is part of the fabric of what makes Columbus so vibrant”
Mayor Ginther also said that the city supports constructive immigration reform on a national level “that keeps families together, upholds our values as Americans, promotes economic rowth, and provides a long-term solution to the immigration
system.” Foreign-born residents are 9.3% of the entire population of Columbus and contribute $258 million in local and state income, property and sales taxes, according to the city. The local refugee community supports an estimated 21,000 jobs in Columbus, the city said. Credit: NBC4 Staff
Mayor John Cranley declared Cincinnati a “sanctuary city” for immigrants during a news conference Monday. “This city stands with immigrants. This city stands with Muslims. This city stands with Syrian refugees yearning to breath free,” Cranley said, pausing at times for applause. “This city has been for years, and will remain a sanctuary city.” The comments came after President Donald Trump signed an executive order banning citizens from
seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the U.S. Friday. The term “sanctuary city” does not have a single definition, but generally refers means that local law enforcement agencies will not turn over individuals to Immigration and Customs Enforcement solely because they entered the country illegally. Police Chief Eliot Isaac said the Cincinnati Police Department “will not be enforcing immigration laws.” However, Hamilton County
Sheriff Jim Neil said deputies would continue to follow their same policies, which could include contacting Immigration and Customs Enforcement for help identifying people in custody who they can’t identify and may be foreign nationals. “People are asking me whether I’m taking the conservative or liberal side, and I tell them I’m taking the side of the law,” Neil said.

Trump’s executive order on immigration is a self-inflicted wound The Washington Post By Editorial Board ON SUNDAY, a White House official told reporters that President Trump’s order for temporary travel bans on visitors from seven countries and on refugees, as well as an indefinite ban on Syrian refugees, was “a massive success story in terms of implementation on every single level.” What really happened was a train wreck of decision-making. More worrisome even than the rookie procedural mistakes are the grave potential consequences of an order that’s wrong ethically and strategically. Mr. Trump’s executive order was not vetted in advance by key Cabinet departments, including Homeland Security, State, Defense and Justice, according to multiple reports. Rather, it appears the order was drafted by a White House coterie. The
New York Times reports that Homeland Security Secretary John F. Kelly was on a Coast Guard plane, in the middle of listening to an internal briefing about it, when Mr. Trump signed the order. Confusion erupted as thousands of green-card holders — who are permanent legal U.S. residents — found themselves stranded abroad. At first, the administration said that green-card holders were included in the travel ban; Mr. Kelly later said they should be admitted. Those who were hurt were not terrorists but residents of the United States who had already gone through extensive checking. The temporary inconvenience and insult are unfortunate but not the worst of this debacle. Mr. Trump’s order for a 90-day halt to entry and four-month pause in refugees included Iraq,
the United States’ main ally in the battle that Mr. Trump claims to prioritize, against the Islamic State. As Mr. Trump insults their nation, Iraqi troops are engaged in a grinding struggle, supported by more than 5,000 U.S. troops, to reclaim Mosul. Where is the wisdom in undermining the credibility and standing of their fragile government in Baghdad, which is so essential to the strategic goal of defeating the Islamic State? If the point of Mr. Trump’s action was to improve security, why deepen the dangerous power vacuum in Iraq? In the future, the United States may need battlefield allies such as translators, but Mr. Trump’s order has endangered hundreds of them in Iraq who helped U.S. troops, had been waiting for special visas to the United States and now

It was an inspiration to see the spontaneous outpouring of public support for refugees and immigrants at airports and
in cities across the country, including from lawyers who rushed to help those being denied entry. As Mr. Trump stained the nation’s reputation by barring the doors to deserving refugees, those demonstrators showed the world that thousands of Americans remain committed to the values that have made this nation a beacon for so long.

The truth is immigrants have let us live like princes By Sam Quinones Los Angeles Times A few years ago, I met a kid whose mother worked in a beef slaughtering plant in Garden City, Kan. The plant employees were Latino immigrants, and many were in the country illegally. This kid had to massage his mother’s hand after she came home each night because it was frozen in the shape of the knife handle she used all day. Her hand, it occurred to me, was one reason why we have such low meat prices. I have followed the debate on illegal immigration for more than 20 years, during which time I worked as a journalist in Mexico and the U.S. The issue is dominated, I’ve come to believe, by Americans’ desire to have it all. We want cheap stuff and low prices. We also want to luxuriate in complaints about strangers in our midst who don’t assimilate as fast as we imagine our grandparents did. That kid and his mother came to mind as Donald Trump assumed the presidency. Trump has backed away from his campaign promise to deport 11 million immigrants in the country illegally, referring instead to a goal of deporting 3 million people. Even if he follows through on only this low-end figure, it will test the contradictory tendencies of American immigration politics and our consumer culture. I recognize the anger of citizens at the bottom of the economy who must compete with those in the U.S. without permission. That galls the native born, who know that competition is not trivial, and I don’t like to hear them characterized as racist simply for pointing it out. But they alone didn’t elect Trump. A good measure of the U.S. political culture that put him in office is shaped by people who want to eat their cake and keep it, too. Over the last 25 years, immigrants have let us live like princes. Growing up in Southern California in the 1970s, I remember no middle-class family who could afford a gardener. Now, so many immigrants
have entered the business, and tools made outside our borders have become so cheap, that landscaping fees have dropped to where even working-class families have help with their yards. Immigrants were a key to the mid-2000s’ housing bubble. Their inexpensive labor allowed buyers to purchase and renovate houses, then turn them quickly and for a profit. In Mexico recently, I met a man who spent three years at a company near Austin that cuts stone for builders; he slept on a warehouse floor, worked 12-hour days and made $8 an hour so Texas houses could have stone facades and walkways. Few non-Latino workers know how to install flooring any more, or are willing to do it for $10 to $15 an hour. Some flooring workers are here legally, but the trade is a magnet for those without papers. They keep wages — and floor installation costs — low. The same might be said for carpentry, plumbing, painting, roofing, and building swimming pools. The pallet industry is essential to American commerce and the low price of goods. It supports bulk transportation from farms and factories, and it too depends on immigrant labor — much of it, I suspect, illegal. The same is true of warehousing and distribution in general.
Wages kept at $11 to $13 an hour in these businesses go some way toward explaining how companies can provide free shipping for e-commerce orders, which is labor intensive. President Obama already set records for deportations during his eight years in office — more than 2 million people. Continued or increased large-scale deportation will surely result in a loss of skill sets and willing workers, particularly for certain regions of the country. With fewer workers forced to take what they can get, wages may have to rise. Slaughterhouses
may have to dramatically improve their working conditions. These are good outcomes. Power returns to unions as labor supply dwindles. Again, that’s a good thing in a time when capital’s hegemony seems absolute. (The Obama administration’s deportations are surely behind the unionizing energy we’ve seen in the last year in Southern California at El Super, a supermarket chain, and at Farmer John, a meat-products manufacturer.) Another logical result of increased deportation would be higher consumer prices, of course. This
would touch people in every economic bracket, including many Trump voters, middleclass folks angered by illegal immigration. As consumers, employers or both, they are beneficiaries of cheap landscaping, cheap flooring, cheap pallets and the cheap meat cut by that woman in Kansas. As simplistic as Trump’s campaign seemed to me — proposing silver-bullet solutions to complicated real-world problems — his presidency may finally force us Americans, including legions of his supporters, to accept responsibility for our contradictory desires and
consumer choices. Put another way, maybe we’ll see whether the courage of our convictions can survive higher-priced meat, the doubling in cost of a new floor, and the end of free shipping.

Donald Trump’s Mexico wall: Who is going to pay for it?
President Trump has always insisted Mexico will pay. Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto has been equally insistent he will not. President Donald Trump has set in motion his plan to build an “impenetrable, physical, tall, powerful, beautiful, southern border wall” between the US and Mexico. The border is about 1,900 miles (3,100 km) long and traverses all sorts of terrain. Mr Trump says his wall will cover 1,000 miles and natural obstacles will take care of the rest. But how much will it cost and who is going to foot the bill? What is the estimated budget? “I would build a great wall, and nobody builds walls better than me, believe me, and I build them very inexpensively.” Mr Trump claims the total cost of the wall will be $10bn (£7.5bn) to $12bn. But estimates from fact checkers and engineers seem to be universally higher. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell estimated it will cost between $1215bn, as he addressed reporters at a Republican conference in Philadelphia. The 650 miles of fencing already put up has cost the government more than $7bn, and none of it could be described, even charitably, as impenetrable, physical, tall, powerful or beautiful. There are other reasons the costs would be likely to escalate beyond Mr Trump’s price tag - his plans
require extending the wall into increasingly remote and mountainous regions, raising the building costs substantially. Adding even more to the expense, the new 1,000 miles would crisscross private land, which would have to be purchased, perhaps by legal force, or financial settlements made with owners. A study by the Washington Post estimated the cost of the president’s wall would be closer to $25bn.
The row over payment
President Trump has always insisted Mexico will pay. Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto has been equally insistent he will not. Needing to fulfil his election pledge to start building on day one, Mr Trump has signed an executive order setting it in motion. He has accepted that US taxpayers will have to cover the initial funding. Congressional approval would be needed and Republicans have suggested a supplemental appropriations bill could be fleshed out over the next two months.
So, how would that money be recouped from Mexico? There are a number of options, but nothing has been officially decided. 1. Raising tariffs on imports. Mr Trump’s
spokesman, Sean Spicer, said on 26 January that the president wanted a 20% tax on Mexican imports to pay for the wall, although he later added that it was one of several options still being considered. “By doing it that way we can do $10bn (£8bn) a year and easily pay for the wall, just through that mechanism alone,” he told journalists. Forbes has argued that existing duties on Mexican goods would have to be quadrupled to pay for the whole of the wall, even if its cost were spread over 10 years. US companies would also almost certainly source products from elsewhere, reducing the revenue. The Mexican government could respond by removing tax benefits for US foreign investment. The investment totalled $101bn in 2013. 2. Remittances. Two possibilities here. President Trump could try to use laws aimed at preventing money-laundering to halt Mexicans working in the US from wiring money to families back home. The sector is huge - about $25bn a year. The hope is that the threat would cow Mexico into coughing up for the wall. The second option is to tax the remittances. Either a flat tax on all, or a far more punitive tax on those who cannot prove legal residence. But Mexicans affected by remittances might simply avoid using the wire companies and
find undocumented third parties to transfer the cash.
“
he told the Washington Post: “It’s realistic if you know something about the art of negotiating. If you have a bunch of clowns negotiating, it’s not realistic.”
The wall would also have to take into account natural flooding zones as What type of wall will well as large areas he build? of sand, where the Throughout his presidential ground effectively campaign, Mr Trump was adamant that he would moves” 3. Levying a “border adjustment” tax. House Republicans propose lowering corporation tax from 35% to 20% but base it on the place of consumption, not production. Imports would be taxed but not exports. A 20% tax, given the $60bn trade deficit with Mexico, would raise $12bn a year. Mexico could do little, the Washington Post reports, because border adjustments would apply to all US trading partners and would not therefore be seen as a singling out Mexico. 4. Increasing travel visa and border crossing fees. Targeting countries that have a bad record on illegal immigration, including Mexico, for higher visa fees would be popular among many Republicans. Along with increasing the fees on cars and individual people crossing the border it would raise revenue, but would probably not be enough alone. Asked whether any of his solutions were realistic,
fortify the southern border with a wall (“a wall is better than fencing and it’s much more powerful”). Concrete is the obvious choice. Ali F Rhuzkan, a New York-based structural engineer, estimated in an article for National Memo that a 1,900-mile wall seemingly Mr Trump’s original plan - would require about 339 million cubic feet (12.5 million cubic yards) of concrete three times more than the Hoover Dam. Mr Rhuzkan’s estimate was based on a wall that ran 5ft beneath the ground and 20ft above. Mr Trump’s claims for the wall range between 30ft and, more recently, 55ft. Even at 1,000 miles vast amounts of concrete would be required. That concrete, Mr Rhuzkan wrote, would need to be manufactured in slabs nearby - likely in dedicated plants - and transported to building sites, with all the enormous production and staffing costs involved.
What about environment?
the
Free movement between the US and Mexico is not just a human issue. What would the construction of a wall mean for animals that live near the border? The US-Mexico border region is a delicate ecosystem with regular animal and bird migrations moving between the north and south of the American continent. A number of species need to cross the border to mate with their genetically different cousins, including the endangered North American jaguar and black bears, which would be threatened without being able to mate with Mexican bears. The wall would also have to take into account natural flooding zones as well as large areas of sand, where the ground effectively moves. Then there is the detrimental impact to the landscape of a massive construction project digging, road building, and the appearance of a concrete wall up to 50 feet high, notwithstanding Mr Trump’s pledge that it will be “very beautiful”.

Tito Ortiz capped off a nearly 20-year professional fighting career in style Saturday. Just two days shy of his 42nd birthday, Ortiz upset Chael Sonnen in the opening round of their light heavyweight bout, submitting the outspoken veteran with a rear-naked choke at the 2:03 mark. The 205-pound bout headlined Bellator 170 inside The Forum. Ortiz (19-12-1) had promised Saturday would be the final fight of his career, and the quick victory did not change his mind. Before exiting the cage, Ortiz had his son, Jacob, symbolically place his gloves in the center of it. The gesture is similar to when amateur wrestlers
leave their shoes on the mat after their final match. “Tonight, January 21, 2017, I’m going to let my son lay these gloves down,” Ortiz said. “This is the last time I’ll be fighting.” For Sonnen (28-15-1), it was a rough way to start what he has dubbed a “Legends A-- Whipping Tour” in Bellator MMA. The 39-year-old was fighting for the first time since 2013, due to a twoyear drug suspension and retirement. A three-time title challenger in the UFC, Sonnen made a surprise signing with Bellator last year after serving his suspension. Sonnen surrendered an early takedown to Ortiz but countered with a guillotine. He used the submission attempt to sweep Ortiz and move into top position. Moments later, however, Sonnen aggressively
attempted another guillotine, which resulted in him forfeiting top position and moving back to the bottom. Ortiz calmly moved into Sonnen’s halfguard and cleared his head from the choke, which he later said was never tight. Once Ortiz was on top, the fight was all his. He landed several elbows, before moving into full mount. Sonnen, who is undersized at light heavyweight, quickly gave up his back to avoid more shots and eventually tapped to the rear-naked. “I knew I’d get the choke because I knew he wouldn’t want to get pounded by me,” said Ortiz, who has gone 3-1 in the Bellator cage. “He’s not super strong, so I knew I could find those positions. He never had me [in trouble]. Thumbs up, [the choke] was never tight.”

Who’s motivated in 2017 to earn his next contract? Free agency didn’t ruin baseball. Indeed, this offseason celebrates 40 years of players exercising their free will to sign with another team -- assuming somebody wants them, of course. For 40 years, we’ve also debated the idea of the “contract year,” that players perform better in the season before free agency. Do they? Maybe. Here’s one study that concludes for hitters “the adjusted OPS of a free-agent hitter in his contract year is expected to be 6.7 percent higher than in noncontract periods.” If you look at what happened last season, you’ll buy into the contractyear phenomenon: Zack Greinke, Jordan Zimmermann, Justin Upton, David Price, Chris Davis, Alex Gordon, Jason Heyward, WeiYin Chen, Johnny Cueto and Jeff Samardzija all signed for more than $70 million, and only Cueto and Samardzija had better seasons than the previous year. With the exception of Price, the rest had hugely disappointing seasons. Whether or not players perform better in contract years, it’s helpful to know who is in a contract year -- in part because some of these guys become prime trade bait in July. Here’s one contract-year guy for each team: Boston Red Sox: Mitch Moreland The Red Sox own a club option on Craig Kimbrel for 2018 at $13 million, a no-brainer to pick up unless he blows out his elbow or something. Moreland is entering the vagabond part of his career where he’ll play for seven teams in five years. Assuming David Ortiz remains retired and Hanley Ramirez primarily DHs, the Red Sox could be seeking an upgrade come July. Baltimore Orioles: Chris Tillman Tillman turns 29 in April, so he’ll hit free agency at a reasonably young age. He missed a couple of weeks late in the season with a sore shoulder. Toronto Blue Jays: Marco Estrada Who knows how Jose Bautista’s mutual option will work, so let’s turn to Estrada, who has had two straight excellent years, defying stereotypes with a sub-90 fastball. As an extreme fly baller, he’ll
New York Mets: Jay Bruce The Mets could be looking for a new offense in 2018 as Bruce, Curtis Granderson, Neil Walker, Jose Reyes and Lucas Duda are all free agents (and the Mets have a club option on Asdrubal Cabrera). Bruce probably has the most at stake, as he could hit himself into a nice deal or he could struggle and find himself on the bench with Michael Conforto in right field.
give up some hits, but he limits hits (he has allowed the fewest hits per nine innings in the American League each of the past two seasons). He’ll turn 34 in 2017 and missed time last year with a back injury, but another solid season will equal a big payday. New York Yankees: Michael Pineda He has pitched in only four seasons, but missed two full years with injuries -time that counted as part of his service time. He’s capable of a big season if he can learn not to groove so many fastballs. Tampa Bay Rays: Alex Cobb He was one of the AL’s best starters from 2013 to 2014 before missing most of the past two seasons after Tommy John surgery. Cleveland Indians: Carlos Santana One reason the Indians were able to reach the World Series is they had locked up many of their key players to team-friendly contracts: Santana, Corey Kluber, Jason Kipnis and Carlos Carrasco. Santana is the first to become a free agent, and given the lukewarm response to first basemen and DHs in this free-agent market, Santana won’t necessarily be priced out of Cleveland next winter. Detroit Tigers: J.D. Martinez He’s eighth in the majors in slugging percentage the past three seasons, but his defensive metrics were so poor in 2016 that some teams may want him
only as a DH (which helps explain why the Tigers had trouble trading him). Victor Martinez is signed through 2018, but Miguel Cabrera probably moves to DH at some point, so odds are J.D is playing elsewhere in 2018. Chicago White Sox: Todd Frazier Frazier has hit 75 home runs the past two seasons, but he has played in two good home run parks and posted a weak .306 OBP. He has been extremely durable (150-plus games four straight years), but a little higher average and OBP, even at the expense of a few home runs, could earn him a bigger contract. Texas Rangers: Yu Darvish and Jonathan Lucroy They should be two of
the most sought-after free agents next offseason, although both will be on the wrong side of 30. Darvish returned from Tommy John surgery and pitched well with a 3.41 ERA and 132 strikeouts in 100.1 innings. The Rangers held him at a strict pitch count (he reached 100 pitches just three times in 17 starts), but he’s in line for $150-plus million with a big season. Seattle Mariners: Hisashi Iwakuma Iwakuma has a $10 million team option. The Dodgers rejected him last year because of red flags in his medicals, but he made 33 starts. Houston Astros: Luke Gregerson Also, Carlos Beltran. Look at what could have been,
however: Jose Altuve would have been eligible for free agency, but instead, the Astros hold two teams options at $6 million and $6.5 million, making Altuve one of the supreme bargains in the sport. Los Angeles Angels: Ricky Nolasco Nolasco has pitched 11 seasons in the majors and had an adjusted ERA better than league average just twice -- and one of those was a 101 ERA+, barely above league average. He has made $69 million in his career, will make $12 million in 2017 and the Angels own a $13 million team option for 2018 that they’ll probably pick up if Nolasco is close to league average. It’s good to be mediocre.
Miami Marlins: Wei-Yin Chen Chen’s $80 million contract was interesting; it was backloaded, but with player options for 2018 ($10 million), 2019 ($20 million) and 2020 ($22 million) -- which he gets to exercise all at once, after the 2017 World Series. If he pitches poorly or gets hurt, he’ll take the options; if he pitches well, he could possibly test the market again. Philadelphia Phillies: Jeremy Hellickson The Phillies have brought in a bunch of veterans on one-year deals or in the final year of previous deals, but Hellickson is interesting. He accepted the Phillies’ $17.2 million qualifying offer, so he’s in the same boat as last year. He’s not so good that he’ll get a mega-deal from somebody else, so going year to year may prove to be his best financial strategy. Credit: David Schoenfield / ESPN Senior Writer.

5 Interesting Facts About Donald Trump’s Supreme Court Pick Neil Gorsuc 1. S u p p o r t e d Hobby Lobby In June 2013, Gorsuch was part of a majority opinion in the United States Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals ruling favorable to Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc., which had sued the federal government over being compelled to provide birth control services it found contrary to its owners’ sincerely held religious beliefs. The June 2013 ruling concluded that a lower court decision against Hobby Lobby and another plaintiff was erroneous for not allowing a defense using the Religious Freedom Restoration Act. In a concurring opinion authored by Gorsuch and joined by two other judges, he wrote, “All of us face the problem of complicity. All of us must answer for ourselves whether and to what degree we are willing to be involved in the wrongdoing of others. For some, religion provides an essential source of guidance both about what constitutes wrongful conduct and the degree to which those who assist others in committing wrongful conduct themselves bear moral culpability. The Green family members are among those who seek guidance from their faith on these questions. Understanding that is the key to understanding this case.” 2. Confirmed to Tenth Circuit Without Dissent In 2006, Gorsuch was confirmed by the Senate to be on the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals via a voice vote. Senate Democrats who did not oppose Gorsuch’s 2006 nomination included Hillary Clinton, John Kerry, Joe Biden and Barack Obama. According to the Denver Post, individual votes on the Gorsuch nomination “weren’t tallied because the nomination wasn’t deemed controversial.” In a statement released at the time, Democratic Senator Ken Salazar expressed his support for Gorsuch, stating that while “Gorsuch has spent the majority of his professional life in Washington, D.C., his roots in the state of Colorado are strong, going back four generations.” “I hope that he will live up to the standard set by a long line of distinguished jurists from our state,” continued Sen. Salazar.

3. His Mother Once Headed the EPA Gorsuch is the son of the late Anne Gorsuch Burford, who formerly headed the Environmental Protection Agency under President Ronald Reagan. During her time as head of the EPA, she garnered controversy for her efforts to reduce regulations and eventually was forced to resign in 1983. “Republicans and Democrats alike accused Ms. Burford of dismantling her agency rather than directing it to aggressively protect the environment,” reported The Washington Post in Burford’s 2004 obituary. “They pointed to budgets cuts for research and enforcement, to steep declines in the number of cases filed against polluters, to efforts to relax portions of the Clean Air Act, to an acceleration of federal approvals for the spraying of restricted pesticides and more.” 4. Attends an Episcopal Church Gorsuch and his family belong to St. John’s Episcopal Church, located in Boulder, Colorado. Gorsuch is known to serve as an usher. According to St. John’s website, the church describes itself as “an inclusive, Christ-centered community reaching out to all who are seeking a deeper spirituality and relationship with God and one another.” “We are formed and strengthened through a variety of worship services, traditional music, contemplative prayer,
spiritual and social justice formation programs, as well as meaningful service within the parish, the local community and in the larger world,” continued St. John’. 5. He Opposes Assisted Suicide and Euthanasia In 2006, Gorsuch had a book published titled The Future of Assisted Suicide and Euthanasia, in which he argued against the legalization of the two controversial practices. “Gorsuch builds a nuanced, novel, and powerful moral and legal argument against legalization, one based on a principle that, surprisingly, has largely been overlooked in the debate — he idea that human life is intrinsically valuable and that intentional killing is always wrong,” reads the book’s Amazon description. “At the same time, the argument Gorsuch develops leaves wide latitude for individual patient autonomy and the refusal of unwanted medical treatment and lifesustaining care, permitting intervention only in cases where an intention to kill is present.

What do Mexicans say about Donald Trump’s wall announcement? The Sun of Ohio Special Report Mexican politicians, commentators and media have hit back at President Donald Trump’s formal launch of his US-Mexico border wall project, calling it the act of an “enemy” and “unworthy” of the United States. Shortly after President Trump signed an executive order for “the immediate construction of a physical wall on the southern border”, prominent Mexicans began reacting with outrage. “From threat to reality: Trump’s words about the wall,” Mexican newspaper Milenioheadlined its story, publishing a string of past tweets from the US president to show how he was following through on his pledge to bolster border security, crack down on illegal immigration, and shift investments and jobs back to the US. ‘Hostile and enemy act’ The details of their cases vary. At the U.S. border crossing between Tijuana and San Diego, numerous asylum seekers from Central America and Mexico have been referred
Secretary Luis Videgaray and Economy Secretary Ildefonso Guajardo. The former president of the Party of the Democratic Revolution, Agustin Basave, said on his Twitter account that Mr Videgaray - who organised a meeting between Mr Pena Nieto and Mr Trump last year should cancel his trip. “Trump welcomes his friend @LVidegaray by spitting in his face,” he said
Left-wing daily La Jornada featured the president’s confident assertion to ABC TV that the border wall would be constructed quickly, with Mexico expected to pick up the bill. “Trump: the wall, in ‘months’; Mexico will pay 100 per cent”, it reported. Senator Armando Rios Piter called Mr Trump’s announcement a “hostile and enemy act” and urged Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto to stay
away from a scheduled meeting with the new US president, scheduled for 31 January. Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, a former Mexican presidential candidate and leader of the left-wing opposition party National Regeneration Movement, MORENA, portrayed Mr Trump’s plan as an act of aggression. “President Trump: your wall attacks us and leaves the [US] Statute of Liberty as a myth. We’ll go to the
international courts. Long live fraternity,” he wrote on his @lopezobrador Twitter account. Influential Mexican journalist Leon Krauze also took to Twitter, calling the announcement a day that was “unworthy of America’s foundation #AmericanWall”. ‘Spit in face’ Prominent Mexican political analyst Jesus Silva-Herzog Marquez called it an “announcement
of a humiliation”, and appeared unimpressed by Mr Trump’s offer of a “winwin” relationship between the two neighbours. “Trump offers a sweet to Pena Nieto, while not hiding the stick,” he tweeted. Major newspapers and commentators noted that Mr Trump’s executive order coincided with a visit to Washington DC by two of Mexico’s President Pena Nieto’s top envoys - Foreign Relations
Colombian government and rebels announce cocaine crop plan Colombia has announced a plan to eradicate vast crops of coca leaf, the raw material for cocaine. The Farc rebel group relied on cocaine production to fund its insurgency, and controlled much of the industry. But a joint programme between rebels and the government will offer farmers monthly payments if they voluntarily destroy their crops. They will also be offered loans and guidance to plant alternatives such as fruit trees and cacao. The crop substitution programme was agreed as part of Colombia’s peace accord, which was finally ratified in December.
“Each family would
receive a monthly stipend of around $350 as well as loans, subsidies, and technical assistance”.
The Colombian official responsible for the programme, Rafael Pardo, said the government would invest $340m, which would benefit
50,000 families. Last year, President Juan Manuel Santos decided to suspend US-backed aerial fumigation of illegal coca crops. The government has set a goal of destroying 100,000 hectares of coca this year, and has yet to rule out other methods to bring coca levels down. But the preferred strategy appears to be winning over the estimated 64,000 peasant families
dependent on the coca trade. “This is much more costefficient and furthermore ensures that territories are transformed and people’s lives are changed,” Mr Pardo said. Each family would receive a monthly stipend of around $350 as well as loans, subsidies, and technical assistance. The programme is supported by the Farc and will initially focus
on 40 municipalities responsible for more than half of Colombia’s coca production. During the armed conflict, the Farc initially taxed farmers producing coca in areas under its control, but eventually dominated trafficking in those areas. As the Farc leave these regions to comply with the peace accord, the concern is that other armed groups including
paramilitary and other crime gangs will try to replace them and take over the trade.
Not the solution Earlier in the day, when Mexican newspapers were already braced for Mr Trump’s announcement, leading daily La Reforma also highlighted the fact the announcement coincided with the pair’s visit to Washington. “They run into the wall,” the newspaper’s print edition headline observed. The governor of the central Mexican state of Guanajuato, Miguel Marquez, added his voice to those calling for Mr Videgaray and Mr Guajardo to cut short their official trip to Washington for the sake of national honour.

Robots could help solve social care crisis, say academics Humanoid robots, with cultural awareness and a good bedside manner, could help solve the crisis over care for the elderly, academics say. An international team is working on a £2m project to develop versatile robots to help look after older people in care homes or sheltered accommodation. The robots will offer support with everyday tasks, like taking tablets, as well as offering companionship. Academics say they could alleviate pressures on care homes and hospitals. Researchers from Middlesex University
and the University of Bedfordshire will assist in building personal social robots, known as Pepper Robots, which can be preprogrammed to suit the person they are helping. Playing games It is hoped culturally sensitive robots will be developed within three years. The programme is being funded by the EU and the Japanese government. Prof Irena Papadopoulos, expert in trans-cultural nursing, said: “As people live longer, health systems are put under increasing pressure. “In the UK alone, 15,000
people are over 100 years of age and this figure will only increase. “Assistive, intelligent robots for older people could relieve pressures in hospitals and care homes as well as improving care delivery at home and promoting independent living for the elderly. “It is not a question of replacing human support but enhancing and complementing existing care.” She added: “We are starting with care homes and with people who are semiindependent living in sheltered housing.
Juan I Menchaca”, proporcionan atención farmacológica y psicoterapéutica..

Ohio Wesleyan professor elected to Hispanic classical theater board Glenda Y. Nieto-Cuebas, Ph.D., to Serve Three-Year Term with International Association She has helped to bring two Spanish Film Festivals to Ohio Wesleyan University, traveled to Spain with students to research the enduring impact of Hispanic Classical Theater, brought a traveling theater production to the university, and worked with honors students to adapt and perform plays from the Spanish Golden Age. And Glenda Y. NietoCuebas is beginning 2017 with a new role that will help her continue to enrich academic and cultural opportunities for her students and colleagues. Nieto-Cuebas, Ph.D., an assistant professor of modern foreign languages since 2011, has been elected to serve a threeyear renewable term on the Board of Directors of The Association for Hispanic Classical Theater (AHCT). The international association works to promote and foster greater appreciation for Spain’s classical drama in production.

“I’m honored to serve on the board of The Association for Hispanic Classical Theater because it will let me work more directly on academic projects and other initiatives aimed at finding innovative approaches for researching, disseminating, and teaching Hispanic Classical Theater,” NietoCuebas said. “AHCT already has allowed me to connect with numerous specialists in my field, leading to collaborative research projects and creating many opportunities for my students.” For example, NietoCuebas said, when she and
two students traveled to Spain as part of The OWU Connection to research the relevance of Hispanic Classical Theater today, including the economic impact of the International Festival of Classical Theater in Almagro, she relied on AHCT colleagues to help the group access experts to interview. And when Nieto-Cuebas wanted to bring the Spanish theater company Morfeo Teatro to campus to perform Miguel de Cervantes’ “El Coloquio de los Perros” (“The Dialogue of the Dogs”), her AHCT knowledge and connections
helped to make it happen. “I thought it was important for my students to get to see a live performance of one of the texts read in class and to talk to theater professionals with a distinctive and artistic take on Spanish Theater,” she said. The performance ultimately became part of a symposium titled “Reimagining the Spanish Comedia in the Transmedia Age,” created in collaboration with Francisco López-Martín, Ph.D., of Denison University, and funded by an Ohio Five Mellon Language Grant. The symposium featured
participation by several AHCT-member scholars and a keynote address by the association’s president, Susan Paun de García, Ph.D. “I’m now collaborating with other AHCT colleagues on several projects that explore how to teach this genre effectively to college students,” Nieto-Cuebas said. “This increase level of engagement has been invaluable to my teaching by helping me develop projects that have proven successful in teaching students the complexities of the Spanish comedia. … In the near future, I hope to be able to take some students to the
annual AHCT conference and include them in one of my presentations.” Nieto-Cuebas began her term on the AHCT Board of Directors on Jan. 1. She earned her bachelor’s degree from the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico, her master’s degree from the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez, and her doctoral degree in Hispanic literature from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst.
