El popular salsero Tito Nieves y uno de los famosos merengueros, Toño Rosario, son dos de las más esperadas atracciones del Festival Latino de este año. También han sido invitado Charlie Cruz y el grupo Bachata Heightz. Tito Nieves conocido con el apodo de El Pavarotti de la Salsa sobresalio en los años 80´y principios de los 90´. En 1977, se asoció con el cantante Héctor Lavoe y su Orquesta y se unió al Conjunto Clásico. Después, Nieves decidió empezar su carrera como solista en 1987, aparte de cantar salsa en inglés. Su tercera producción

“Déjame vivir” en 1991 alcanzó un disco de platino, incluyendo los éxitos “De mí enamórate”, “Te amo”, “Déjame vivir”, “Almohada” y “How To Keep The Music Playing”. Su cuarta grabación se lanzó en junio de 1993 con el título “Rompecabeza (The Puzzle)”. Inspirado en el suceso de sus temas en inglés, Tito decidió incluir dos canciones en este lenguaje “Can You Stop The Rain” y “You Bring Me Joy”. Toño Rosario es uno de los merengueros dominicanos más populares en su país y en el exterior. Se ha caracterizado por ser estrafalario en su vestuario y por tener un comportamiento excéntrico y sus recitales siempre son muy extravagantes.

Charlie Cruz es una de las nuevas estrellas de la salsa puertorriqueña. También se le conoce como El macho de la salsa. Su debut en el mundo discográfico fue seguido por otros lanzamientos como fueron las producciones “Así soy” y “Un chico malo”. De éstas surgieron éxitos de difusión como “Bombón de azúcar”, “Amarte es un problema” y “Un chin chin”. Bachata Heightz es un grupo de bachata urbana que nace en Washington Heights, Manhattan, NY. Debutaron con su primera grabacion en el año 2009 con “Me Puedo Matar,” en colaboracion con la super estrella del merengue y la bachata Héctor Acosta, El Torito.

En una denuncia criminal ante una Corte Federal, el sobreviviente identificado con las siglas JMMJ relató a agentes especiales de la División de Investigaciones Internas (HSI) de la Oficina de Inmigración y Aduanas (ICE) que se dirigió a Nuevo

Laredo, Tamaulipas, para ser llevado a San Antonio, Texas. Entrevistado por los agentes en el hospital donde recibe atención médica, JMMJ, oriundo del central estado mexicano de Aguascalientes, dijo que una vez que llegara a San Antonio, tenía que pagar cinco mil 500 dólares a los contrabandistas. Añadió que esperó con un grupo de 28 personas hasta las ocho de la noche del día fijado, que no fue precisado, para ser contrabandeado a través del rio Bravo hacia Estados Unidos. De acuerdo con el documento escrito por el agente especial del HSI, James Lara, el inmigrante fue notificado por los

traficantes que gente ligada al grupo criminal de Los Zetas le cobrarían 11 mil pesos mexicanos (unos 600 dólares) por protección, y mil 500 pesos más (unos 83 dólares) por el tubo inflable o balsa para cruzar el río en esa zona. El dinero fue recabado y el grupo cruzó el río en balsas en tres diferentes viajes, y una vez en Estados Unidos, los inmigrantes caminaron hasta el siguiente día. Hacia las nueve de la mañana de ese día, su grupo fue recogido por un vehículo Chevrolet Silverado y conducido al tráiler en el que se produjo luego el percance. .

Agentes federales en Houston detuvieron hoy a una mujer por su presunta participación en una banda que organizaba secuestros virtuales desde México y extorsionaba a inmigrantes mexicanos en Estados Unidos. La Oficina del Procurador Federal para el Sureste de Texas informó que la mujer, identificada como Yanette Rodríguez Acosta, de 34 años, fue detenida este jueves en Houston, luego de que un gran jurado emitiera una acusación de 10 cargos en su contra. Según la acusación, Rodríguez Acosta se encargaba de recolectar el dinero entregado por

personas que creían que sus hijos habían sido secuestrados y pagaban para liberarlos. Los cómplices de Rodríguez Acosta, ubicados en México, llamaron a numerosas víctimas en Estados Unidos en los estados de Texas, California y Idaho en un intento por extorsionarlos. En las llamadas se les informaba a los migrantes que supuestamente su hijo había sido secuestrado y debían pagar para asegurar su libertad. “Estos tipos de casos son trágicos”, afirmó el procurador federal interino para el sureste de Texas, Abe Martínez. “No es la cantidad de dinero involucrada; es el hecho de que estas personas son engañadas en la creencia de

que sus seres queridos están en peligro, y el horror y la impotencia que sienten”, indicó. De acuerdo con la acusación, a las víctimas de la extorsión se les ordenaba enviar el dinero a personas en México, sin embargo, en dos casos se les instruyó a entregar la cantidad pactada en lugares específicos en el área de Houston, el 17 de septiembre y el 30 del mismo mes de 2015. Ambas víctimas supuestamente fueron informadas de que sus hijas habían sido secuestradas porque habían presenciado un crimen y amenazaron con cortarles los dedos si no cumplían con las demandas.

The horrific incident involving dozens of immigrants allegedly smuggled into the U.S. in a sweltering tractortrailer is proof that illegal immigration is “not a victimless crime,” the acting head of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) told Fox News on Monday. “It’s a message I’ve been trying to get out as long as I’ve been the acting ICE director,” Thomas Homan said on “Your World with Neil Cavuto.” Federal authorities have since charged the alleged driver of the tractor-trailer, James Mathew Bradley Jr., 60, of Clearwater, Fla., with transporting immigrants in the U.S. illegally. Investigators found the packed truck at a Walmart in San Antonio over the weekend. Ten people who were inside the truck have died.

“Illegal immigration is not a victimless crime,” Homan argued. “These folks, they contract with criminal organizations. These organizations are the same organizations that smuggle drugs, they smuggle weapons, smuggle people that want to do harm to this country. You talk about drug cartels…are talking about smuggling folks. These are not victimless crimes,” he said. “When you’re victimized as an illegal alien or

somebody stealing your social security number or your credit rating goes to zero because someone took your identity. This is not a victimless crime,” Homan continued. “Those folks that want to turn a blind eye to illegal immigration, this is what happens. There’s a legal way to do it and a not legal way to do it. Millions have come to this country and become parts of it’s society through the legal process. That’s what we need to stick to,” Homan added.

Es cierto que hay componentes del evento que pueden ser mejorados, pero esa es una realidad que concierne a toda obra, a toda organización humana: la superación es una tarea permanente. No dejar de reconocer el esfuerzo que cada año realiza el equipo organizador del evento para poder poner en escena un evento de calidad. Nuestras más sinceras felicitaciones a ellos y nuestro estímulo a que sigan luchando cada año por un evento que ofrezca lo mejor de nuestra cultura. El Festival Latino no solo es música y baile, también es una muestra de nuestra mejor gastronomía, y de varios aspectos del quehacer social en la ciudad. Ojalá cada año se integren nuevos componentes culturales y se ofrezcan todas las posibilidades de participación tanto a los expositores como a los visitantes. Por Abner Josue Zambrano Hepburn Cuenta una tradición Maya que cuando dos desconocidos se encuentran, el uno le dice al otro: “Yo soy tu”; a lo que el otro responde: “Y tu eres yo”. Y así de simple se resume la travesía, en encontrarnos con las personas que nos esperan y empezar a construir en nuestra memoria los momentos imborrables que marcarán nuestra vida para siempre. Sin embargo, existe una característica muy particular de la juventud latinoamericana de mi época, el olvido. Por alguna razón, nosotros, los jóvenes, padecemos de esta extraña amnesia que nos arranca las ganas de esforzarnos por desenterrar las memorias sepultadas. Se nos olvida, por ejemplo, que venimos de la región más rica y diversa del mundo, que en América

Latina el arcoíris humano está al alcance de todos, y que la diferencia de colores, idiomas y creencias, lejos de teñirlo de negro, embellece el paisaje en su máximo esplendor. Ser Latinoamericano es reconocerse en el hermano que viste bombacha o guayabera; calza chancletas o guarachas, y en muchos casos, con el hermano que no viste ni calza. Es saber jugar al trompo, sentarse por horas en una mesa de domino y escuchar a las madres, gritar a lo lejos, que los frijoles ya están esperándonos en la mesa. Es desesperarnos porque el Coronel espera, y no tiene quien le escriba, es dedicar 20 poemas de amor y jugar a la Rayuela al salir del colegio, para luego poder perdernos entre sus hojas. Es sentir un cosquilleo en las piernas, sin importar las virtudes que uno tenga en la pista de baile, al escuchar salsa, merengue, guaguancó o cumbia. Es

apreciar la brisa de Buenos Aires mientras Gardel canta la noche que me quieras y estremecerse con las milongas de Atahualpa Yupanki y Alfredo Zitarrosa. Es maravillarse con la figura del Cristo del Corcovado y observar el imponente vuelo del cóndor que pasa, junto a los versos de Chabuca Granda, y que allá, en el país de lagos y volcanes, Ruben Darío sigue pintando con palabras la perfección de los suelos Latinoamericanos. “Trump should show some political courage and endorse immigration protection for Dreamers” Seven years ago, Congress had a chance to take a humane approach to people living in the United States illegally not through their own actions, but through the actions of their parents. Arriving as children, some of these immigrants were smuggled across the border while others entered legally but their families failed to leave when they were supposed to. Many weren’t even aware of their immigration status until they tried to get a job or had some other official contact that required proof of citizenship or a Social Security number. Many also know no other country — they have been raised as Americans, educated in American schools, and share American dreams and values. It would be cruel to send them packing now. To lessen the threat of deportation for those who arrived in the United States as children, the House in 2010 passed the Dream Act, which would have provided a path to citizenship for those who met certain conditions. But Democrats in the Senate failed to muster enough support to bring it to a vote, so it died. In the wake of that political debacle, President Obama created the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, using prosecutorial discretion to grant temporary relief for

people who met roughly the same conditions spelled out in the failed Dream Act. Of the 1.3 million people eligible for protection — a renewable two-year card granting permission to live and work in the United States — some 750,000 have applied for and received it. Enter Donald Trump. One of the mainstays of his presidential campaign was demonization of immigrants in the country illegally and bellicose promises to deport them all, build a wall along the southern border and make Mexico pay for it. But Trump was strangely, for

By Eduardo Lago El Pais In the United States, 57 million people consider themselves Latino and 40 million speak Spanish, out of a total population of around 308 million. These facts highlight a historical constant: the ability of the Spanish language to resist an institutional environment that has been, and is currently acting, hostile. Laws attempting to eradicate bilingual education have systematically failed, because the use of a language depends on the people who speak it, and not on legislation. Data support faith in the vitality of Spanish in the United States, from its use in homes and communities, to its presence in the

media, especially on television. Spanish also has considerable weight in American academia. Despite the fact that US President Donald Trump added an official Twitter account in Spanish, what does the news about the deletion of Spanish from the White House’s website mean? In a video from 1960, which today seems rather poignant, Jacqueline Kennedy speaks Spanish, asking Latinos to vote for her husband John F. Kennedy, who at the time was a senator. This was not an isolated case. Throughout the more than half-a-century since then, the Spanish language has been used with certain regularity in the presidential milieu, by both Republicans and Democrats. Everyone remembers George W. Bush’s attempt to engage with Spanish. Meanwhile, his successor, Barack Obama, thought it important that the official White House webpage

him, conciliatory about the Dreamers — those who would have been eligible for protection under the Dream Act. After initially pledging to “immediately end” the program once he moved into the Oval Office, he softened on the campaign trail. He should show some political courage, endorse the DACA provisions and defend them should Texas carry through with its threat to sue. As well he should. The usual arguments for escalating deportations — that lowwage immigrants compete unfairly with U.S. citizens,

and that they somehow pose a threat to public safety — are especially hollow when applied to those brought into the country as young children. As president, Trump has expressed sympathy for the Dreamers’ plight and has left the DACA program alone even as he ramped up deportations and ended Obama’s planned extension of protections to parents of citizens and legal residents, but who are themselves in the United States illegally. Yet Trump also has not endorsed DACA, likely fearing backlash from political supporters who

bought into his draconian views on immigration. Those waters were further muddied recently when Texas and several other states threatened to file a legal challenge to DACA if Trump did not rescind it. Last week, Homeland Security Secretary John F. Kelly told members of Congress that he thought the Obama executive action that created DACA was likely illegal and an abuse of executive power. He questioned whether the Trump administration would defend it in court if the states did sue. Trump

responded that he would make the decision on DACA, not Kelly or U.S. Atty. Gen. Jeff Sessions (whose antipathy to immigration runs deep). Meanwhile, the Dreamers are left in limbo as the infighting in the White House continues between the hard-liners who want to end DACA and those whose hearts aren’t made completely of ice. The best solution here is a comprehensive immigration overhaul that would include a reprieve for the Dreamers, but it’s quixotic to think that this White House, and this Congress, would ever agree on humane reforms. The closest we came was the 2013 “Gang of Eight” Senate bill that, while imperfect, offered a bipartisan blueprintfor dealing with immigrants who are in the country illegally, among other improvements in the law. That measure died in the House when Republican Speaker John A. Boehner refused to let it come to a vote. Trump can move us in a better direction. He should show some political courage, endorse the DACA provisions and defend them should Texas carry through with its threat to sue. That would leave some of his core supporters frothing at the mouth, but that’s what a leader does — makes the tough calls in the country’s best interests regardless of the politics.

The danger of speaking Spanish in the United States do justice to the bilingual reality of the United States, integrating Spanish into its design. Spanish is not the only thing that has disappeared from the White House’s webpage: also deleted are allusions to Cuba, climate change and the Iran nuclear deal, among other things.

It was the United States who came to us.” And how did they do it? Through a simple operation of buying and selling. In 1848, after a military conflict, Mexico ceded half its territory to its northern neighbor for $15 million under the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Overnight, a huge part of the Spanish-speaking population became part of the northern territory. A survey of place names serves as a silent witness to the trampling of this territory by the United States. Names such as Los Angeles, San Francisco,

Nevada, Colorado, among many others, each have their own history. If geography is unequivocal, the same cannot be said about history, which AngloAmericans have always told badly, prioritizing the vision of an expansive horizontal movement from coast to coast; heading west. The Hispanic vision, centered on an examination of a vertical South-North axis, has been emphasized by researchers such as Professor Fernández Armesto in Our America(the title, as is well known, comes from Cuban national hero José Martí), but it is systematically ignored. More data. California, which sometimes flirts with the dream of independence, is, besides being the richest state in the country, a pre-eminently Spanishspeaking territory. In Miami one can get by without speaking any English at all. Another fact worth underlining is that, despite what is usually

argued through imprecise statistics, the use of Spanish does not decrease from one generation to another in a lineal way, given that the constant flow of new immigrants counteracts any such fall. Other languages such as Yiddish, over extended periods of time in places like New York, have disappeared without a trace: Spanish, in contrast, has not stopped growing, a trend that the new administration seems determined to halt. The ever-changing history of relations between Spanish-speakers in the US and their maternal language switched from being defined by an inferiority complex to a phase of assertion and pride. But now there is an additional element: fear. Brazil corruption scandals: All you need to know For the past three years, Brazil has been gripped by a scandal which started with a state-owned oil company and grew to encapsulate people at the very top of business - and even presidents. On the face of it, it is a straightforward corruption scandal - albeit one involving millions of dollars in kickbacks and more than 80 politicians and members of the business elite. But as the tentacles of the investigation dubbed Operation Car Wash fanned out, other scandals emerged. It has led to some of those who have found themselves accused claiming they are the victims of political plots, designed to bar them from office. But what is this scandal all about? And who is it said to involve? What is Operation Car Wash? Operation Car Wash began in March 2014 as an investigation into allegations that Brazil’s biggest construction firms overcharged state-oil company Petrobras for building contracts. Investigators accused directors at the firm named the world’s most ethical oil and gas company in 2008 - of skimming the extra money off the top as a bribe for awarding the contract. Which is bad enough - but then the Workers’ Party found itself dragged into the corruption scandal amid allegations of having funnelled some of these funds to pay off politicians

and buy their votes and help with political campaigns. Among those accused in the scandal were dozens of politicians, and Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva - the country’s extremely popular former president, known affectionately as “Lula”. Corruption at the highest level? Three years after the investigation began, Lula was found guilty of the first of five charges against him: that he had been given a beachfront apartment by engineering firm OAS in return for his help in winning contracts with Petrobras. He has been sentenced to nine-and-a-half years in prison, although he will not be jailed until the outcome of an appeal. But Lula, who denies all charges, says the investigation and trial were politically motivated to prevent him from running for president again in the next election. Lula isn’t the only one to have held the presidency to face investigation right now: the two people who followed in his footsteps are facing corruption allegations of their own. The attorney general has charged current President Michel Temer - the former vice-president who took office in August last year - with receiving money from the boss of giant meatpacking firm JBS, which itself is already implicated in a corruption scandal. The charges have been delivered to a Supreme Court judge who must

now decide if the case can be sent to the lower house of parliament, which will decide whether or not to lift his presidential immunity. Mr Temer denies all charges. And then there are the separate allegations which saw his predecessor Dilma Rousseff - who followed Lula into office after he had served two terms What led to Rousseff being impeached? Entirely separate to the Operation Car Wash allegations, Ms Rousseff - a close ally of Lula found herself in trouble for allegedly moving funds between government budgets, which is illegal under Brazilian law. She argued this was common practice among presidents, but her critics said she was trying to plug deficit holes in popular social programmes to boost her chances of being re-elected in 2014. Ms Rousseff fought the allegations, arguing that her right-wing rivals had been trying to remove her from office ever since her re-election.But she lost and her vice-president, Mr Temer, of the centre-right PMDB party,

was put in charge until January 2019, when the president to be elected in a vote next year will take office. However, Ms Rousseff ’s supporters do posit another theory when it comes to her fall from grace: they allege that the politician’s rivals wanted her gone because she would not shield them from the Car Wash probe. Anything else you need to know? Yes - there is one more scandal which involves those at the highest level: Odebrecht, which has also been caught in Operation Car Wash. The Brazilian-based construction giant, which is Latin America’s largest

construction conglomerate, has admitted bribing officials to secure contracts in Brazil and other countries in South America. One of the companies it is said to have bribed? Petrobras. In fact, its former CEO, Marcelo Odebrecht, who is serving a 19-year prison sentence for corruption, was found guilty of paying more than $30m (£21m) in bribes to Petrobras officials in exchange for contracts and influence. He and 76 other Odebrecht officials are giving investigators information as part of a plea deal. Mr Odebrecht may also yet bring down another president: he says part of the $48m he donated to

both Ms Rousseff ’s and Mr Temer’s campaigns in the 2014 Brazilian presidential election was illegal. This is now under investigation by Brazil’s electoral court. If fraud is found, their campaigns could be annulled, which means that Mr Temer would be removed from office. Both Mr Temer and Ms Rousseff deny all allegations of fraud. (BBC).

No es porque los jugadores busquen desesperados arrastrar por los suelos su reputación vestidos de verde, es, simplemente, la consecuencia de un proyecto acéfalo en el que la principal meta es sacar ganancias en las taquillas. Una derrota contra Jamaica, un combinado ubicado en el lugar 76 en el ránking de la FIFA, les ha privado de jugar la final de la Copa Oro frente a Estados Unidos. No solo se trata del plan Juan Carlos Osorio, ese que empezó a finales de 2015, sino uno de 10, 20 e incluso 30 años que se ha visto limitado por extrañas decisiones de los dirigentes. Desde hace años los clubes empezaron a invertir plata en sus equipos inferiores para captar talentos; sin embargo, las resoluciones de los directivos y dueños en la liga han entorpecido su crecimiento al preferir la capacidad de jugadores foráneos. Este entorno ha trastocado a los chicos mexicanos que compiten, anhelan y ruegan por un lugar en primera división. Los mexicanos deben competir entre sí, luego con los fichajes extranjeros y luego con los veteranos, en ese trajín pasan años esenciales para pegar el tirón. Los dueños de los equipos siguen pensando que la liga mexicana es igual que la española o la inglesa donde se deben contratar a los efervescentes talentos de Sudamérica para dar

un espectáculo de primer mundo. Y no es así. No se han ubicado en el mundo fútbol. Sus aspiraciones deberían acercarse más a las de producir a los nuevos Hugo Sánchez y Rafa Márquez. Hace unos meses rechazaron jugar la Copa Libertadores. Su razón fue la saturación de juegos, pero en los medios localesha trascendido la posibilidad de que se haga un torneo junto con Estados Unidos. Esto se traduce a grandes ingresos en la venta de boletos y una reducción del nivel frente al sudamericano. En la juventud está la clave. En 2005 unos adolescentes de 17 años

ganaron una Copa del Mundo frente al temible Brasil. Seis años después lo volvería a conseguir una camada de la misma edad. En 2011 una sub-20 alcanzó el tercer lugar en el mundial de su categoría. En 2012 tocaron el olimpo al ganar la medalla de oro en unos Juegos Olímpicos en el césped de Wembley. Un puñado de ellos ha logrado destacar. Ahora tras los mundiales juveniles los futbolistas quedan relegados. Sin nuevos talentos producidos en la liga, la selección absoluta la pasa mal a la hora de hacer convocatorias. “En el fútbol mexicano hay pocos nueves”, mencionó el auxiliar de México, Pompilio Páez tras la derrota contra Jamaica. En la temporada pasada, de los 68 delanteros registrados, solo 21 eran mexicanos y menos de la mitad fueron titulares. Algunos de ellos han tenido que desplazarse a jugar como extremos al no tener la preferencia por sus entrenadores. El puesto de Juan Carlos Osorio está en suspenso. Su contrato le asegura empleo, mínimo, hasta que termine el Mundial de Rusia. Una irregular Copa

Confederaciones, con su mejor plantel, y una pésima Copa Oro, con un cuadro alternativo, han opacado su impoluto rendimiento en las eliminatorias. La decisión más sensata sería mantenerle en el puesto para llevar al equipo al Mundial. Y allí que se tire un volado hacia la suerte. ¿Y por qué no seguir el ejemplo de Australia? En 2006, la federación australiana pidió su cambio de confederación para dejar de jugar en el fútbol rudimentario de Oceanía y tener un mayor competencia en Asia. A México le caería bien dejar la zona de Norteamérica, Centroamérica y el Caribe. Dejar los partidos contra Curazao para probar su nivel con el de Sudamérica. Si a los dirigentes mexicanos les preocupa no clasificar al Mundial, la FIFA ya ha aprobado para 2026 el campeonato del mundo con 48 equipos. Para eso se necesitan voltear a ver a los futuros novatos.

Atacan con explosivo sede del Episcopado de México

Bomb set off at Mexican Bishops’ Conference headquarters El Sol de Ohio Special Report Desconocidos detonaron un explosivo contra la sede de la Conferencia del Episcopado Mexicano (CEM), en Ciudad de México. En un video de seguridad compartido por el Obispo de Cuernavaca, monseñor Ramón Castro, se puede observar, desde el interior del edificio, el momento en que el explosivo detona en el exterior de las instalaciones. Mons. Castro señaló que “la sede de la Conferencia Episcopal Mexicana ha

sufrido un atentado con bomba molotov de 3 cilindros”. “Creo que eso refleja la situación de México”, señaló. El Director de la oficina de prensa de la CEM, Armando Cavazos, explicó en un comunicado que “hoy por la madrugada, alrededor de la 1:50 a.m. aproximadamente, fue colocado un artefacto explosivo (se desconoce de qué tipo) en la puerta principal del edificio de la CEM”. La explosión, indicó, causó “solo daños materiales en la propia puerta” y precisó

que “ninguna persona en el exterior ni interior” resultó herida. “Se están realizando las averiguaciones pertinentes, ya que al parecer no es el primer caso que ocurre en esta zona de la Ciudad de México”, señaló. El Secretario General de la CEM, Mons. Students Sue School for Hushing Pro-life Speech El Sol de Ohio Special Report Two students have filed a lawsuit against their Pennsylvania school district for the right to operate a pro-life club according to their proposed mission statement. The lawsuit, filed July 11, came after the district refused to back down from requiring the club’s policies meet unprecedented standards. Elizabeth Castro and Grace Schairer jumped through all the requisite hoops to establish Trojans for Life at Parkland High School in Allentown, Penn., only to have their request denied in March. After attorneys with the Thomas More Society warned the district in a letter that its actions violated the students’ constitutional rights, the

school backed down but with a caveat. The club said its mission was to “establish an active pro-life culture among the youth of our community by educating our peers on life.” But the district demanded the students keep their pro-life message confined to members only and changed the mission to “establish[ing] an active pro-life culture among our members by educating our members on life.” “As far as we know, no other club is restricted to advocating and educating solely their own members, but are permitted to engage in speech with the entire school,” Thomas More Society attorney Jocelyn Floyd told me. “Even after we explained the problems with those restrictions and gave legal support to

back up our explanations, the district insisted that it would not change its positions on any of them.” With negotiations at an impasse, Castro and Schairer filed the lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. The lawsuit, Castro v. Parkland School District, claims the district’s actions violate the federal Equal Access Act and the First Amendment. The district also prohibited the club from fundraising, fearing a possible violation of the Establishment Clause if money raised by the students went to support religiously affiliated pregnancy centers. But Floyd said the law allows student clubs to use raised funds at their discretion. Administrators called students’ plans to sponsor a memorial service outside

an abortion center “dangerous,” denied the activity, and declared all club activities subject to district approval. Floyd said no other Parkland High School club is required to operate under such scrutiny, and the standards violate the

district’s own policy. Schairer, who will be a senior this fall, hopes to see the club established before she graduates to educate her peers about abortion and offer resources to students facing unplanned pregnancies.

Pastor es condenado en Cuba por enseñar Biblia a sus propios hijos El Sol de Ohio Special Report Un pastor evangélico en Cuba fue condenado a un año de trabajos forzados y arresto domiciliario, después de desafiar al gobierno comunista del país e insistir en que sus hijos fueran educados en casa, pudiendo así recibir enseñanzas más profundas sobre la Biblia. La organización cristiana “International Christian Concern” (ICC) informó el pasado jueves que el pastor Ramón Rigal, líder de la Iglesia de Dios en Cristo en el país, declaró abiertamente que su decisión de no matricular a sus hijos en las escuelas, se basó en su fe cristiana. Como el ‘Diario de Cuba’ informó la semana pasada, Rigal había sido originalmente condenado a un año de prisión en Guantánamo, pero una acción reciente de su defensa logró una alteración del castigo, permitiendo que cumpliera la pena en régimen domiciliario. Arrestan en California a religioso guatemalteco con fines de deportación

El pastor, identificado como Noé Carias, enfrenta una orden de deportación por ingresar a este país cuando era un adolescente de 14 años, hace más de dos décadas. Casado con Victoria, una ciudadana estadunidense, y padre de dos hijos, de 5 y 7 años, ambos nacidos en Estados Unidos, Carias es pastor de las Asambleas Evangélicas de Dios. Victoria explicó que su esposo recibió una orden de deportación en 1995. Líderes de la comunidad religiosa y miembros

de la familia del pastor originario de Guatemala protestaron este lunes por la detención y deportación prevista del religioso, que ha vivido sin documentos migratorios en este país por más de dos décadas. Líderes evangélicos latinos y miembros de la comunidad interreligiosa se reunieron esta tarde en el Edificio Federal en el centro de la ciudad de Los Ángeles llamando a la libertad de Carias. “Es nuestra oración, esperanza y deseo de que ICE otorgue la suspensión de remoción para él”, dijo el superintendente del Distrito Sur de las Asambleas de Dios, Sergio Navarrete. Samuel Rodriguez Condemns Trump Admin for Arresting Evangelical Pastor Rev. Samuel Rodriguez is calling on the Trump administration to release a Guatemalan-born evangelical pastor who was detained during his appointment with an immigration officer on Monday in California. Noe Carias, who pastors an Assemblies of God church in Los Angeles and has a wife and two kids who are all United States citizens, is facing deportation after he was deemed “deportable” by immigration officials because of a deportation order dating back to 1995, according to his lawyer Noemi Ramirez. The Los Angeles Times reports that although Carias was granted two one-year stays in 2015 and 2016, Carias’ attempt for a third stay was denied earlier this year.

Rodriguez, the president of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference and pastor of New Season Church in Sacramento, who is also affiliated with the Assemblies of God, said in a statement shared with The Christian Post that he is “dismayed” over Carias’ arrest and impending deportation. “By all accounts, Pastor Carias is a law-abiding and productive member of his local Los Angeles community,” Rodriguez assured. “Beyond that, he is a model father of two children who are both U.S. citizens and Wednesday will be his 14th wedding anniversary to his wife Victoria.” Un d o c u m e n t e d immigrants like Carias, who have committed no

major crimes other than being in the country illegally, seemingly do not fit the mold of the type of person that President Donald Trump has said that his administration would target for deportation. However, this is not the first time since Trump took office in January that a California-based pastor has been detained by immigration officials. San Diego-based pastor Jorge Ramirez was detained by border patrol in May. “Time and again, President Trump has stated his priority would be to deport violent criminals, drug dealers, human traffickers and gang members. Paul Shanley is scheduled to be freed Friday after completing a 12-year sentence for the rape of a boy at a suburban Boston church. Victim advocates, lawyers, and two men who said they were raped by Shanley in the 1970s called on the public Wednesday to help track

Shanley’s whereabouts once he gets out and is placed on probation. They urged people to call their local police to report on Shanley. Shanley’s appellate lawyer says his 86-year-old client has served his time and is not dangerous. Shanley was defrocked by the Vatican in 2004.

Venezuela crisis: US sanctions 13 top officials

The US government has imposed sanctions on 13 senior Venezuelan officials as pressure mounts on President Nicolás Maduro ahead of a controversial vote for a new constituent assembly. The sanctions freeze the US assets of those affected, and US entities are barred from doing business with them. Those targeted include the interior minister and the head of the army. Last week, President Donald Trump vowed “strong and swift economic actions” if Mr Maduro held the poll, due on Sunday. The vote, which Mr Maduro says will proceed as planned, is to choose the 545 members of a new constituent assembly that would rival the oppositionheld National Assembly. Critics say the president

is trying to cement a dictatorship. He argues it is the only way to bring peace back to the divided nation. The US sanctions also target the head of Venezuela’s National Electoral Council, Tibisay Lucena, and former vice president Elias Jaua, who is leading the presidential commissions organising Sunday’s vote. The inclusion of senior figures from the state oil company PDVSA underlines a further threat from Washington that sanctions on Venezuela’s oil sector could be next. The Venezuelan government has not commented. Announcing the sanctions, US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said the US “will not ignore the Maduro regime’s ongoing efforts to undermine democracy, freedom, and the rule of law”. “Anyone elected to the National Constituent

Assembly should know that their role in undermining democratic processes and institutions in Venezuela could expose them to potential US sanctions,” he said. Mr Maduro has accused the US of stoking unrest against his government, but President Trump said last week that Washington “will not stand by as Venezuela crumbles”. A 48-hour general strike is currently under way in Venezuela, in protest at the planned vote. More than 100 people have been killed in protestrelated violence there, since almost daily antigovernment protests began on 1 April. The unrest has further hammered an imploding economy that is running short of food and medicine.

In his Wednesday morning tweet-storm announcing that transgender people would no longer be allowed to serve in the military, President Trump said the move stemmed from the “tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail.” However, an analysis by the Rand Corporation last year found that the costs of allowing transgender people to serve in the military would have a “minimal impact” on the budget, amounting to $2.4 million to $8.4 million each

year, or 0.04 percent to 0.13 percent of the military health care budget. That’s little more than a rounding error when compared to the total U.S. military budget of roughly $700 billion. Rand estimates that there are 2,500 transgender people currently on active duty in the military, and about 1,500 in the reserves. It estimates that 29 to 129 service members might seek transition-related care, which could leave them unable to deploy immediately. Last month, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis ordered a six-month delay to an Obama policy that would have allowed

transgender people to enlist. Conservatives largely opposed that policy. Eighteen countries currently allow transgender people to serve in their militaries. The U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) said Wednesday it will impose new stricter security rules requiring airline travelers to remove all electronic items larger than mobile phones like tablets, e-readers and video game consoles from carryon baggage for screening. All restrictions on those airlines were lifted this month. The requirements unveiled in June include enhanced passenger screening at foreign airports, increased security protocols around aircraft and in passenger areas and expanded screening by sniffer dogs, and take effect in stages.

La Procuraduría Federal para el Distrito Este de California presentó una demanda de decomiso contra Cazes y los bienes de su esposa, ubicados en todo el mundo, incluyendo Tailandia, Chipre, Liechtenstein y Antigua y Barbuda. Según el DOJ, Cazes y su esposa tenían numerosos activos de alto valor, como

autos de lujo, residencias y un hotel en Tailandia. El canadiense poseía además millones de dólares en criptomonedas, confiscadas por la Agencia Federal de Investigaciones (FBI) y la Administración para el Control de Drogas (DEA) de Estados Unidos. Antes de ser desmantelado, AlphaBay llegó a atender a más de 200 mil usuarios y tenía enlistados a unos 40 mil vendedores. Asimismo, el sitio tenía más de 250 mil listados de drogas ilegales y productos químicos tóxicos a la venta y más de 100 mil de documentos de identidad

robados, dispositivos de acceso, productos falsificados, malware y otras herramientas informáticas ilegales, armas de fuego y servicios fraudulentos. En comparación, Silk Road, el primer sitio de internet que operó la venta de drogas ilegales

en la denominada “red profunda”, y que fue incautado por la policía en noviembre de 2013, había reportado aproximadamente 14 mil listados de bienes y servicios ilícitos en el momento en que fue desmantelado.

Respecto a las flores de cannabis que se ofrecen en las farmacias, Blasina opinó que es un producto “suave”, pero que tiene un “sabor excelente y una calidad excelente”. “No vamos a tener una mala noticia de que alguien se sintió mal por fumar esto”, aseguró al referirse a

las dos variedades que puso en circulación el Estado uruguayo, que contienen una psicoactividad que ronda el 2 %. En tanto, Blasina expresó que aún queda “muchísimo por avanzar” pero que “la gente tiene que buscar buena ciencia”. EFE

Blasina se refirió en una entrevista con el medio local Teledoce a la ley aprobada en diciembre de 2013 bajo el Gobierno de José Mujica (2010-2015), que estableció la producción y comercialización de marihuana por parte del Estado.

In January 2014 Lydia Dziubanek felt profoundly unhappy. She was overweight and trapped in an emotionally abusive relationship, while raising three young boys. As she struggled with depression, she started having suicidal thoughts. “It was complete and utter hopelessness,” Dziubanek, 38, told TODAY. “Telling people that you are struggling with your marriage is very, very hard. I didn’t feel comfortable letting anyone know.” Her now ex-husband also taunted her about her weight. At the time, she weighed 250 pounds at 5 feet 2 inches tall. But Dziubanek, who was overweight her entire life, didn’t believe she could ever lose the weight. As the abuse and despair increased, the Banning, California resident actually considered taking her life. She got into her car, thinking she might drive it off a cliff, but instead she found herself standing in the middle of a gym. “The full force of what I had almost done hit me like a ton of bricks and I realized I had to change,” she said. Dziubanek walked up to the biggest trainer in the Anytime Fitness, Mike

Rike, and admitted she was desperate for help. He took her over to an exercise machine and asked her to start. When she finished, he told her that he’d see her the next day. “It helped me survive. It helped me get through the day. Someone was expecting me to be there the next day,” she said. “...Those were the first tiny steps that gave me to tools to help deal with depression.” Dziubanek, who also went to therapy, had never worked out before. During the first month of exercising with Rike, she shed 17 pounds. Then he recommended she meet with a nutritionist and she changed her eating habits by introducing healthier foods, such as lean proteins,

vegetables and fruit, and cutting processed foods and soda. After only a month, Dziubanek felt emotionally strong enough to leave her husband and by May 2014 they divorced. After over a year of working out and eating healthy, she dropped 94 pounds and weighed 156 pounds. Then she changed her goals and has been building muscle. She now weighs about 170 pounds and she’s currently working on doing an unassisted pull-up. “You go through different stages,” said the fourth grade teacher. “It is very important to identify what goal you want to reach, hit that goal and constantly be changing them.”

2. Have someone keep you accountable. At first, Dziubanek needed Rike to tell her to show up to the gym and work out a certain amount of times. Having a schedule and someone that expected her kept her focused. “It is so crucial and important to get accountability and help. You cannot do it on your own,” she said. 3. The numbers on the scale don’t define health. Because she was overweight, Dziubanek felt like she had to lose a lot of weight. But she soon learned that success took many forms. Understanding that has allowed her accomplish much more than she thought she could. “After I got down to 175, then my goals changed. I didn’t care about the weight so much. I wanted to be able to do pushups … I wanted to pull my body over a wall or whatever,” she said. (Today).

Dziubanek feels happy and proud with what she’s accomplished. “I learned I was stronger,” she said. Dziubanek provided tips for others hoping to lose weight.

1. Set small goals. “At first the goal for me was to get to the gym. Let’s get me through today. Now this week,” she said. Having such small goals made losing weight easier. Focusing on losing 20 pounds instead of 80 or

Dogs are more than just cuddly companions — research continues to show that pets bring real health benefits to their owners. Having a dog around can lead to lower levels of stress for both adults and kids. They’ve been found to decrease the risk of asthma in children and have been linked to lower blood pressure. And researchers have also shown that dog owners are more active than those who don’t own dogs, packing in more steps per day on their walks or just regular playtime. Last month, a study showed that older dog owners take 2,760 more steps per day on average compared to non-owners, which amounted to an

additional 23 daily minutes of moderate exercise. Now, a new study in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health shows how enduring that phenomenon is: dog owners are also significantly more active during the winter. Researchers from University of East Anglia (UEA) and the Center for Diet and Activity Research at the University of Cambridge used data from the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition Norfolk cohort, and they focused their study on 3,123 participants between the ages of 49 and 91. Nearly 20% of those participants owned a dog, and they all wore an accelerometer for seven days to track their movements. The researchers found that

the the people who didn’t own a dog were sedentary for about 30 more minutes a day on average than those who walked their dogs. Everyone who participated in the study was less active on shorter days, colder days and days with more precipitation. But the researchers discovered that, even during days with bad weather, dog walkers were more active than nondog walkers were on the nicest days. “We were amazed to find that dog walkers were on average more physically active and spent less time sitting on the coldest, wettest, and darkest days than non-dog owners were on long, sunny, and warm summer days,” project lead Andy Jones, a UEA professor, said in a press release.

Dog walkers got in an average 12 more minutes of activity on the wettest days, for example, than those who don’t own dogs got on the driest days. Overall on the driest days, dog walkers were sedentary for an average of 632 minutes, compared to non-dog owners’ 661 minutes.

Jones said this finding could have important implications about how to motivate people to stay active as they age. “Physical activity interventions typically try and support people to be active by focussing on the benefits to themselves, but dog walking is also driven

by the needs of the animal,” Jones said in the release. “Being driven by something other than our own needs might be a really potent motivator and we need to find ways of tapping into it when designing exercise interventions in the future.” (Time).

Un estudio realizado por investigadores de la UNAM a niños de primaria y secundaria arrojó que de ellos, los que son acosadores viven generalmente en un entorno familiar en el que imperan las leyes de la hostilidad y la violencia. Incluso, algunos también padecen trastorno por déficit de atención con hiperactividad (TDAH), además, desconocen límites, tanto en el hogar como en la escuela. “Después del estudio con niños de primaria y secundaria, observamos en la Ciudad de México y en Toluca a 14 mil infractores juveniles del Consejo Tutelar para Menores, y vimos que 100 por ciento de ellos tenía TDAH y problemas de conducta social desde edades tempranas”, enfatizó el investigador Héctor Lara Tapia. “Sólo se ve la cara al bullying, pero atrás hay

Una inyección mensual de tratamiento antirretroviral puede bastar a los portadores del virus de la inmunodeficiencia humana (VIH) para mantener a raya la infección, en lugar de un comprimido por día, según un estudio difundido en la IX edición de la conferencia de investigación sobre el VIH. El trabajo, presentado en París por el científico de la Universidad estadounidense de Carolina del Norte Joseph Eron, sugiere que los portadores en estado de supresión viral responden bien a las inyecciones sin importar

si son administradas cada cuatro semanas o cada ocho. En la actualidad, los portadores del VIH deben tomar un comprimido diario para que el virus sea indetectable y no pueda ser transmitido, aunque no es posible eliminarlo completamente. “Para algunos seropositivos, un tratamiento inyectable de larga duración puede ser más cómodo y menos estigmatizante (que el actual), lo que podría incrementar la tasa de seguimiento”, señalan los autores de este ensayo, que ya ha sido probado
