Lucero Rico Villa, 29 years old, born in Carácuaro, Michoacan de Ocampo, Mexico. She was shot and killed the Sunday at night. Columbus Police informed she was found suffering multiple gunshot wounds in the parking lot at The Gardens at Easton Apartments around 11:37 p.m. El Sol de Ohio reproduce the news of the local channel. Fox 28: A woman was shot and killed at an apartment complex in Northeast Columbus late Sunday night. Officers found Lucero Rico Villa, 29, suffering multiple gunshot wounds in the parking lot at The Gardens at Easton Apartments around 11:37 p.m. Minutes later, paramedics pronounced Villa dead in the 3600 block of Cypress Club Way. A 911 caller said he saw a man fire shots and drive away,

A federal grand jury has indicted three people on charges they smuggled Guatemalan minors into the United States and forcing them to work on an egg farm, reported the Columbus channel NBC4. This is the complete report: Neighbor Tara Baker witnessed the scene, as federal agents and local authorities raided a trailer park in Marion County. “”It was early in the morning,” she recalled. “There (were) school buses everywhere and there were cops everywhere and they came in and kicked doors in.” According to court documents, Aroldo CastilloSerrano, 33, of Pecos, Texas, Conrado Salgado Soto, 52, of Raymond, Ohio, Ana Angelica Pedro, 21, of Columbus and Juan Pablo Duran Jr., 23, of Marysville, Ohio were indicted and accused of smuggling workers as young as 14 or 15 from Guatemala to the United States, falsely promising them that they would be able to attend school in the United States. The defendants allegedly transported the minors to a trailer park in Marion, where they ordered them to live in dilapidated trail-

The defendants threatened workers with physical harm and withheld their paychecks in order to compel them to work. The indictment lists eight victims under the age of 18 and two adult victims. Castillo-Serrano, Salgado Soto, and Pedro are charged with a labortrafficking conspiracy. Castillo-Serrano is also

charged with 10 individual counts of forced labor; Salgado Soto and Pedro are charged in eight of those 10 counts. CastilloSerrano and Salgado Soto are also charged with harboring illegal aliens, as is an additional defendant, Pablo Duran Jr. Castillo-Serrano and Pedro Juan are charged with witness tampering for trying to persuade another person to give false information to the FBI. Pedro Juan herself is also charged with lying to the FBI. Each of the 11 trafficking counts and the witness tampering count carries a sentence of up to 20 years.

Each count of harboring illegal aliens and lying to the FBI carries a sentence of up to 5 years. Steve Dettelbach, the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio, said this labor trafficking is “nothing more than modern-day slavery.” Baker said it’s disturbing to know this was happening in her area. ”I’m glad they have them in safety, to be honest,” she said. “That way they are not being treated that way.” Trillium Farms has several locations around Ohio.

Laura Smith Smith is wanted by the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office for possession of drugs. Smith is described as a white female, 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighing 145 pounds. Los hispanos Sí tienen quien les escriba La célebre novela del más excelso de los escritores latinoamericanos, Gabriel García Márquez, El Coronel no tiene quien le escriba, nos sirve de referencia para escribir este comentario, a propósito de dos acontecimientos que la semana pasada estremecieron a nuestra comunidad: el asesinato de la joven mexicana Lucero Rico Villa y la detención por parte de autoridades del FBI y posterior condena de tres inmigrantes guatemaltecos que trabajaban en una granja del condado de Marion. El asesinato de Lucero Rico posiblemente quede en el anonimato, como la casi totalidad de crímenes cometidos contra hispanos en esta ciudad, y la condena de los trabajadores chapinos será una de las tantas que se producen de manera discriminatorias contra los trabajadores hispanos en Ohio y los EUA. Detalles de ambos casos se publican en esta edición. En esta opinión editorial hemos querido llamar la atención de uno y otro caso, no porque sean casos aislados o extraños, si no porque queremos advertir a todo el que pretenda seguir maltratando, y abusando de los hispanos en Ohio, que mientras este periódico siga saliendo a la calle, no será indiferente a estos casos, que no vamos a permanecer callados, que los vamos a publicar y a denunciar, hasta que un día la Justicia brille por igual para los hispanos en Ohio.

Fumando espero…

Lo conocí una tarde soleada de otoño. Los árboles cargados de hojas rojas brillaban con un maravilloso color que recreaba la vida. Su gentileza, su personalidad, su dedicación y amor hacia mi mejor amiga llamaron mi atención y entendí porque ella se había enamorado de él. Al presentarnos sentí el olor del cigarro, de la nicotina y en nuestra conversación me contó que si fumaba, pero que un día de estos se decidiría y lo dejaría. No pasaron más de seis meses se internó en el hospital. El diagnostico: cáncer al pulmón. No tuvo que decidirse, la vida decidió por él. Aprendió a vivir con un solo pulmón. Empezó su lucha por la vida, aceptó el tratamiento largo, tedioso, las terapias, fueron días que entre broma y broma de aliento yo disfrazaba mi tristeza y preocupación por su salud. Su amor por el canto lo había llevado desde mucho antes a formar parte de un famoso coro en Columbus, era voluntario para mejorar el ambiente o hacer algo por los demás. Mejoraba notablemente y el día de la Maratón en la lucha contra el cáncer a las mamas le comenté que yo correría en homenaje por su vida, por haber salido bien de todo esto. Con su amplia sonrisa, su voz que aún resuena en mis oídos me dijo “hazlo, gracias. Y además los pulmones están cerca al pecho”. Escribí en la hoja rosada su nombre, corrí con ganas, con esperanza y al final le envié la foto con su nombre. Hace poco más de una semana se tuvo que

internar nuevamente. Mi amiga me decía “los médicos dicen que está estable” a pesar que ya estaba en coma. Percibí que su tranquilidad era aparente y sucedió lo que me temía, a los pocos días partió. El, que estaba listo a ayudar a los que acudían a él, el que amaba a mi amiga, a sus amigos, quien amaba la canción, la vida y los perros partió para no volver. Fue vencido por una enfermedad respiratoria. Nos dejó de un momento a otro, con la el sentimiento que baña el alma por su ausencia, con muchas preguntas sin respuesta. ¿Porque amigo permitiste que la nicotina se convirtiera en parte de tu vida diaria mañana tarde y noche? Tu sabias que esta era una manera lenta de morir. Inconscientemente ¿no querías aceptar esta realidad de que el cigarro estaba destruyendo tus pulmones? ¿Por qué dejaste que la vida decidiera por ti? Tu partida nos dejó dolor y muchas preguntas que quizá podrías haberme respondido si hubiéramos tenido más tiempo de conversar. Ahora que voy por las calles o a reuniones, tu partida me ha hecho aún más consciente de esta adicción. Veo tu rostro y tu sufrimiento a futuro en las mujeres embarazadas que fuman haciendo que el bebe que esperan inhale la nicotina, o permitiendo que el marido lo haga delante de ellas, en los adolescentes que lo hacen “mostrando equivocadamente su madurez”, en los que fuman dentro de la casa o

en patio, en los que fuman en los carros mientras manejan llevando niños u otros adultos con ellos, en las personas que en el “break” del trabajo salen a fumar, en las personas hospitalizadas que salen con el pijama y el suero a la calle y lo mismo por su adicción. En tu nombre sin pronunciarlo seguiré hablando de esto aunque reciba la misma respuesta de aquella persona a quien le sugerí cuidara su salud respondió: “De algo tengo que morirme, ¿no?”. Esta adicción es una enfermedad que los convierte en egoístas. Solo piensan en ellos y no en los demás. Estoy triste porque tu partida David nos deja un vacío tremendo, eras un maravilloso ser humano, ya no escucharemos más tu voz, no veremos más tu sonrisa, no estarás para ver la felicidad en la gente a quienes tocaste con tu vida, mucho quedó inconcluso como la vida compartida en el amor en mi amiga de quien me duele su sufrimiento, como también el de la mascota que adoptaron poco antes de que partieras y no comprende tu ausencia. Te extrañamos y además siento coraje porque no pusiste un alto cuando aún era tiempo. Hoy cada vez que veo a alguien con el cigarro entre los labios me vienen a la mente las letras de una canción que dice “fumando espero al hombre yo quiero”. Juan Gelman nació en Buenos Aires el 3 de mayo de 1930 y murió en Ciudad de México el 14 de enero de 2014. Descolló en todas sus actividades: militante político, traductor, director de revistas literarias, periodista, escritor en prosa y, por encima de todo y siempre de manera excelsa, poeta. Hay un consenso entre todas las personas que lo frecuentaron: Juan Gelman fue un hombre muy bondadoso y muy generoso. Contrariamente a muchos coetáneos poetastros y poetas, no fue vanidoso ni exhibicionista, no buscó codearse con los poderosos de la banca, la industria y el espectáculo, no abandonó nunca la cosmovisión altruista y humanista de su adolescencia, fue fiel a sus amistades, a sus maestros, a la memoria familiar y popular, a la lucha por un mundo mejor. Juan Gelman escribió prosa y poesía con la autenticidad de lo verdadero. Quiso cambiar la vida del mundo mayoritario y del lenguaje de la vida diaria, ayudándose del conocimiento y el análisis de la realidad, y del accionar político y lingüístico. de sentido era la esencia misma de la poesía más alta, la que puede (y tal vez debe) declamarse sin aspavientos ni voz engolada ni estentórea. En prosa y en poesía, la forma conferida a la obra

es lo decisivo. Por eso, el autor está siempre en busca de formas idóneas para los contenidos que le preocupan y le “trabajan”, a veces día y noche. En el discurso que pronunció en la entrega del Premio Cervantes 2007, Juan Gelman explicó el credo de la práctica de Cervantes que fue también el que guió a la suya, en referencia a los neologismos: “Salvo él, nadie vio a una persona caminar asnalmente. O llevar en la cabeza un baciyelmo. O bachillear. Don Quijote aprueba la creación de palabras nuevas, porque ‘esto es enriquecer la lengua, sobre quien tienen poder el vulgo y el uso’. Hace unos años ciertos poetas lanzaron una advertencia en tono casi legislativo: no hay que lastimar al lenguaje, como si éste fuera río coagulado, como si los pueblos no vinieran ‘lastimándolo’ desde que empezaron a nombrar. Cuando Lope dice ‘siempre mañana y nunca mañanamos’ agranda el lenguaje y muestra que el castellano vive, porque sólo no cambian las lenguas que están muertas. La lengua expande el lenguaje para hablar mejor consigo misma.

Y su gran temática fue, por consiguiente, el amor. El amor a las personas, a lo vivo y a todo lo que sustenta la vida. El amor al lenguaje y a la poesía. Por ese amor auténticamente existencial, Gelman fue la persona menos solemne que puede uno imaginar. Tan antisolemne o más que Julio Cortázar, otro gran espíritu creador que nos enseñó a leer la lengua más desafiante e innovadora, y a sentir detrás de ella a un ser humano preocupado por su arte y todavía más por el presente y el futuro de nuestra humanidad tan lastimada.

1. Ciertos alimentos sirven para quemar grasas El repollo, el apio, la toronja, el té verde, los pimientos picantes… Puede que no sea la primera vez que escuchas que estos alimentos ayudan a eliminar la grasa, y probablemente puedas añadir otros a la lista. Pero según la Fundación Cardíaca Británica (BHF por sus siglas en inglés), no es el caso. No hay ningún tipo de comida que tenga propiedades especiales y que pueda quemar la grasa de más que hay en el cuerpo. 2. No se debe picar nada entre comidas De acuerdo a la misma organización, esta premisa también es un mito. No hay problema con comer algo ligero en el medio de las comidas principales siempre y cuando se trate de un refrigerio o un tentempié sano, como algún vegetal, una fruta o yogurt bajo en grasa. Es útil porque ayuda a controlar el apetito. 3. Comer de noche es lo que engorda

La hora a la que se consume un alimento particular no es lo que determina el aumento de peso, son las calorías. Si se consumen más de las que se deben, se ganarán kilos adicionales, no importa si esto ocurre en la mañana, en la tarde o en la noche. En esto coinciden tanto el Centro de Salud de la Universidad de West Virginia, en Estados Unidos, como

la publicación médica estadounidense WebMD, que añade que no existe ninguna prueba de que cuando se come tarde en la noche, se engorda. 4. Los carbohidratos son malos Este tipo de alimentos son un componente fundamental en nuestra dieta, que incluyen azúcares, almidón y fibra. “Nuestro cuerpo necesita los carbohidratos para ob-

tener energía, y particularmente para que el cerebro y los músculos funcionen. El Departamento de Salud del Reino Unido recomienda que al menos la mitad de la energía que incluimos en nuestra dieta tiene que venir de carbohidratos almidonados”, explica Chambers, de la Fundación Británica de Nutrición. 5. Mientras menos grasas comas, mejor La especialista de la Fundación Británica de Nutrición explica que contrario a lo que muchos puedan creer, se recomienda que al momento de hacer una dieta el 35% de la comida que proporciona la energía provenga de las grasas. No se sugiere seguir un régimen alimenticio bajo en grasa o que elimine completamente el consumo de grasa. Lo que hay que tener en cuenta, resalta Chambers, es que como hay diferentes tipos de grasa, el tipo que se ingiera es lo que hace la diferencia. Lo ideal es reemplazar la saturada

con la que no lo es, ya que la última ayuda a reducir el colesterol en la sangre, que está relacionada con el riesgo de enfermedades cardíacas y derrames cerebrales. En relación con el tema de las grasas, también hay que tener en cuenta el siguiente mito: 6. Los productos bajos en grasa ayudan a perder peso Los alimentos que se venden con esas características suelen incluir mayores cantidades de azúcar, sal y almidón que aquellos que tienen todos los componentes regulares. Esto ocurre para compensar el sabor que pierden cuando se les quita o se les reduce la cantidad de grasa. Con este tipo de alimentos también existe el riesgo de consumir más porciones –en cantidad y frecuenciade las que se comerían con la versión regular. Esto ocasionaría una ingesta de calorías mayor, lo que definitivamente no ayuda a eliminar esos kilos de más. En cuanto a los productos que se mercadean afirmando que no tienen azúcar, lo que suele ocurrir es que se endulzan con concentrados de jugos de fruta, por lo que se termina consumiendo la misma cantidad de calorías que con el original y, además, no hay ninguna ganancia desde el punto de vista nutricional, de acuerdo con el Centro de Salud de la Universidad de West Virginia. 7. Tomar mucha agua es igual a “adiós kilos!” El agua es fundamental para el organismo, pero no por eso se debe asumir que al aumentar su consumo se perderá peso.

Aunque es bueno tomar más de este líquido al hacer una dieta, porque ayuda a evitar otras bebidas que contienen azúcar, esta única acción no contribuye a eliminar esos kilos extra, hay que tomar otras medidas. De lo contrario, afirma WebMD, no habrá ninguna diferencia. 8. Algunos tipos de azúcar son peores que otros La publicación referida con anterioridad también indica que hay investigaciones que demuestran que el cuerpo absorbe de manera similar el azúcar regular, la miel y los endulzantes que se hacen con almíbar de maíz que se convierte en fructosa. Como referencia, es bueno considerar que las calorías que se adquieren con una cucharadita de cualquiera de estos productos oscilan entre 48 y 64. 9. Saltarse comidas hace la dieta más efectiva No es cierto. Las consecuencias de esta medida es que te sientas más hambriento, lo que a su vez lograría que consumieras más alimentos en tu próxima comida. De hecho, según algunos estudios existe una conexión entre la obesidad y saltarse el desayuno. Varias organizaciones, entre ellas el Instituto Nacional de Enfermedades Digestivas, del Riñón y la Diabetes, en EE.UU, están de acuerdo en este punto. 10. Lo que funciona para perder peso, son los ejercicios intensos y prolongados Se trata de otro mito porque la actividad física de baja intensidad también consume calorías. Ageing rates vary widely, says study El Sol de Ohio Special Report

A study of people born within a year of each other has uncovered a huge gulf in the speed at which their bodies age. The report, in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, tracked traits such as weight, kidney function and gum health. Some of the 38-year-olds were ageing so badly that their “biological age” was on the cusp of retirement. The team said the next step was to discover what was affecting the pace of ageing.

The international research group followed 954 people from the same town in New Zealand who were all born in 1972-73. The scientists looked at 18 different ageing-related traits when the group turned 26, 32 and 38 years old. The analysis showed that at the age of 38, the people’s biological ages ranged from the late-20s to those who were nearly 60. “They look rough, they look lacking in vitality,” said Prof Terrie Moffitt from Duke University in the US.

The study said some people had almost stopped ageing during the period of the study, while others were gaining nearly three years of biological age for every twelve months that passed. People with older biological ages tended to do worse in tests of brain function and had a weaker grip. Most people’s biological age was within a few years of their chronological age. It is unclear how the pace of biological ageing changes through life with these measures. BBC News.

Here’s a brief reminder not to assume everyone experiences the world the same way you do: Though you may be pumped for the sunshiney days of summer ahead, there’s a small minority for whom summer is depressing. Seasonal affective disorder, something we typically associate with winter, happens to some people in the summer. Like its winter twin, the summertime version of seasonal depression could be described as an exaggerated version of the way the seasons make most of us feel, according to the scientific literature. Winter depressives tend to eat a lot and sleep a lot; summer depressives, on the other hand, lose their appetite and struggle with insomnia. So it’s kind of like the pattern most brains and bodies follow — even people without these conditions feel sleepier in

And because it’s uncommon, summertime SAD has largely been overlooked by scientists who study seasonal affective disorder. “In the 25 years since it was first de-

scribed, SAD has been the subject of more than one thousand studies,” writes Joseph Kasof in a 2009 paper on summer-onset depression in the Journal of Affective Disorders. “However, SAD researchers have narrowly focused on winter-SAD ... very little was learned about summer-SAD.” Consequently, scientists don’t have a good idea of how to treat summertime depression. Winter SAD can usually be managed with light box therapy — brief, daily exposure

For summer depressives, the best guess scientists currently have is to take the opposite approach: stay inside, curtains drawn, fans and airconditioning operating at full blast. Even still, any relief gained is fleeting, Rosenthal said. “The trouble with cold therapy, which might be seen as the equivalent of light therapy, is that it doesn’t seem to last,” Rosenthal said. “If you’re in the cool air conditioning, it helps you while you’re in it, but then when you go outside — my patients have de-

scribed it as being hit by a wall of heat.” Any benefit gained from the time indoors in the cool disappears, he said. With winter depression, there is at least the small comfort that everyone else is hunkered down in their apartments watching Netflix, too. Summer depression, on the other hand, can feel isolating, like you’re missing out on some big party. “They’re hiding in their dark rooms, and they feel like they’re not part of this great pageant that’s going on outdoors, in the swimming pools and going for hikes,” Rosenthal said. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, an even smaller fraction of people experience seasonal depression in both summer and winter, “while feeling fine each fall and spring, around the equinoxes.” More evidence that the world would be a happier place if it were around 65 degrees, forever and always.

In wake of FIFA scandal, concacaf begins its own overhaul El Sol de Ohio Special Report

For those who have followed the recent corruption-related controversies lingering over global soccer, it most likely required little more than a glance at the list of officials implicated in the United States Department of Justice’s investigation to notice a pattern: Most of the executives have, or had, connections to Concacaf, the regional governing body overseeing soccer in North Yes, much of the public’s attention regarding malfeasance in soccer has focused on FIFA and its outgoing president, Sepp Blatter. But the deeprooted corruption alleged within Concacaf, starting with its recently ousted president, Jeffrey Webb — who is one of the officials awaiting extradition after being arrested at a hotel in Zurich in late May — was staggering. According to federal investigators, Concacaf officials engaged in an array of illegal activities, including money laundering, rack-

eteering and bribery. The organization’s reputation, and its credibility, were left in tatters. Concacaf, which stands for Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football, attempted Monday to begin reforming itself. While meaningful change will take time, the organization released what it called a framework for reform, laying out a number of proposed changes to the way it is

governed. Some of the more notable ideas are the inclusion of fully independent members on the powerful executive committee, term limits for top officials and the publishing of top officers’ salaries and other compensation. Many of the proposals are similar — if not identical — to some that critics of FIFA have often suggested will be necessary if soccer’s world governing body ever wants to enact meaningful change. How-

ever, these proposals only apply to Concacaf as a body and not to any of its member associations. In other words, an organization like the United States Soccer Federation — which has been led since 2006 by President Sunil Gulati — would not have to impose the term limits proposed for Concacaf. The introduction of similar requirements for member associations may be a more realistic prospect in the future. For now, Con-

cacaf is simply focused on fixing itself. “People are right to be skeptical,” said Sam Gandhi, the head of corporate practice at the law firm Sidley Austin, which is advising Concacaf on matters including governance. “We know we’re not asking people for a second chance; we’re asking them for a third chance,” Mr. Gandhi said. “So we get it. We’re not thumping our chests. We want people to watch what we do and judge us then.” Concacaf said implementation of some of the proposals would begin immediately. The measures were unanimously approved by the organization’s executive committee in Vancouver, British Columbia, on Saturday, the day before the Women’s World Cup final, and were developed by a special committee comprising Mr. Gulati, Justino Compeán of the Mexican federation and Victor Montagliani of the Canadian federation. The proposals also would overhaul how Concacaf chooses its financial

partners, covering matters such as broadcasting rights and bids to host tournaments. Those are two areas in particular that federal investigators have alleged are rife with corruption. Additionally, the organization said a new position, chief compliance officer, would oversee implementation of the new laws and guidelines. Mr. Gandhi said that additional steps would be required before many of the measures could be enacted. For example, changes to the election of executive committee members or the enactment of term limits would require revisions to Concacaf laws. Such holdups are precisely the sort of thing that might make longtime fans leery. “And we get that — it’s fair,” Mr. Gandhi said. “But this was a package that was unanimously agreed on. It wasn’t just one person standing up in a room. We know we have to fix our ship, and that’s the only way we’ll get back the fans’ trust.”. Source: The New York Time.

De camino a Ecuador, el Papa Francisco envió varios telegramas a los presidentes, mandatarios y jefes de estado de cinco países. El Pontífice escribió a los líderes de España y Portugal, así como a los mandatarios de Italia, Colombia y Venezuela. En sus breves mensajes, el Papa asegura la oración por cada una de estas naciones y pide una pacífica convivencia. Al Presidente de Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, Francisco manifiesta “mi afecto y cercanía por el pueblo venezolano” y

pide al señor “abundantes gracias que le ayuden a progresar cada día más en solidaridad y pacífica convivencia”. En el texto al Presidente de Colombia, Juan Manuel Santos, el Papa pide para todos los colombianos “abundantes gracias que lo hagan progresar en los valores humanos y espirituales que le caracterizan, deseándole al mismo tiempo una prosperidad creciente y una convivencia pacífica”. En el texto enviado al Presidente de la República Italiana, Sergio Mattarela asegura “fervientes deseos por el bienestar espiritual, civil y social del pueblo italiano”.

Al Rey Felipe VI de España le dice: “al sobrevolar el territorio español para dar comienzo a mi visita pastoral a Ecuador, Bolivia y Paraguay, me es grato enviar un cordial saludo a vuestra majestad y a la Reina, y renovar mi afecto y cercanía al pueblo español, para el que pido al Señor copiosas gracias y un creciente progreso espiritual y social en pacífica convivencia”. “De dónde a mí que el Vicario de Cristo venga a mí”, dijo el P. Paquito al ser consultado sobre cómo recibiría al Papa Francisco cuando lo visite en Guayaquil (Ecuador). El sacerdote jesuita, que en pocos días cumplirá 91 años, está muy entusiasmado de encontrarse con su antiguo amigo. El P. Francisco Cortés, más conocido como Paquito, nació en Málaga (España) el 10 de julio de 1924 y llegó a Ecuador en 1963, sirviendo desde entonces en el Colegio Javier de Guayaquil. Según el diario El Universo, a principios de la década de 1980, el sacerdote conoció al P. Bergoglio, cuando era provincial de los jesuitas argentinos y visitó Ecuador buscando un lugar para enviar a sus novicios. Años después se volvieron a reunir y más adelante el P. Paquito viajó a Argentina para la ordenación sacerdotal de algunos jesuitas que él acompañó en Ecuador. En el 2014, según The Wall Street Journal, el Papa Francisco, en un encuentro inesperado en Roma con el médico del P.

Paquito, María Panchana, preguntó: “¿Cómo está Paquito?” “Dele mis saludos y dígale que yo iré pronto a verlo”, recordó la Dra. Panchana. En febrero de este año, César Pérez, editor del diario El Universo de Guayaquil, le presentó al Pontífice en el Vaticano un video de celular en el que el P. Paquito saludaba a su viejo amigo. El Papa Francisco le manifestó que quería ver a Paquito, a lo que el periodista contestó: “Entonces usted tendrá que ir a Guayaquil”. El sacerdote jesuita tiene algunas molestias en el corazón y está en perma-

nente en contacto con los médicos. “Dicen que quiere hablar conmigo, no sé de qué será… En cuanto lo nombraron Papa me mandó más de cinco recados de que me saludaran personalmente. El Arzobispo de Washington, Cardenal Donald Wuerl, publicó la carta pastoral “Ser católico hoy” en la que señala las dificultades que enfrentan los fieles en Estados Unidos cuando viven su fe en la esfera pública y explica que así como Cristo no cambió su mensaje pese a la incomprensión de muchos, la Iglesiatampoco lo puede alterar para agradar a la gente. Mientras el mundo mira preocupado hacia Grecia, otro drama muy similar estallaba en el Caribe. La deuda pública de Puerto Rico es “impagable”, reconocía su gobernador, Alejandro García Padilla. La isla de 3,6 millones de habitantes debe 72.000 millones de dólares a sus acreedores. Y no tiene dinero para pagar. Su estatus jurídico le impide acogerse a la ley de quiebras y Washington no parece dispuesto a ceder. La misma Casa Blanca que lleva insistiéndole a Europa que ayude a Grecia ha descartado un rescate financiero para la isla. Como en Atenas, el endeudamiento de Puerto Rico no paró de crecer durante años para financiar un gasto público muy superior a sus ingresos y tiene el dudoso honor de ostentar la mayor deuda per cápita de todo Estados Unidos. Una elevada evasión fiscal, problemas de corrupción y falta de transparencia son otros de los problemas que comparten Grecia y Puerto Rico. Al igual que los europeos, Puerto Rico tiene una moneda, el dólar, pero sin capacidad para aplicar una política monetaria propia. Su estatus jurídico de estado asociado a Estados Unidos, tampoco le permite declararse en bancarrota, una opción a la que se han acogido ciudades

Venezuela is facing the prospect of a national beer shortage because of striking workers at two breweries. Unions linked to President Nicolas Maduro have forced the closure over a pay dispute with the brewer Polar. The company makes up to 80% of Venezuela’s beer. Half of their breweries are now shut, with others already running at reduced capacity. For the past years there have been shortages of milk, toilet paper and medicines in Venezuela. In previous disputes, the government has threatened to nationalise Polar.

Workers are striking at Polar’s breweries in Caracas and Anzoategui state, as well as at 16 distribution centres. The striking unions say that pay is at the heart of the dispute. “They’ve delayed our collective contract for over 20 months, and the company refuses to recognise our union,” spokesman Jose Rojas told Reuters news agency. Venezuela has strict controls on the cost of food and hygiene products to guarantee that the poor can afford basic goods. Rebeca Méndez Jiménez, una mujer de 63 años que desde 1971 esperaba en el puerto el regreso de su novio, un joven que salió a pescar y jamás regresó, falleció el pasado fin de semana. La mujer fue homenajeada por los pobladores de Puerto Vallarta, en el estado de Jalisco, México, donde se convirtió en un símbolo por la espera de su amor. Fueron más de 41 años que esperó a su amado Manuel, quien salió de pesca. Sin embargo, quedó atrapado por un huracán que azotó el mar. Nunca más se supo de él y tampoco se encontró su cuerpo. Estaban a una semana de casarse. El golpe fue tan fuerte para Rebeca que desde el día que desapareció Manuel, lo esperó con su traje blanco. Bien fina ella. Con esa elegancia vendió dulce a los turistas en el Muelle de San Blas. Allí fue que el líder de Maná, Fher, la conoció en la década de los noventa.

Videos that keep people watching for longer will earn a greater share of the revenue from these ads, with Facebook keeping 45% for itself. Facebook says its users clock up four billion video views daily. One expert said it posed a threat to YouTube. “Facebook is aggressively moving into the video

space,” said Eleni Marouli, advertising analyst at IHS consultancy. “In December 2014, Facebook surpassed YouTube in views for the first time, and we predict YouTube will lose share from next year onwards.” In June, US broadcaster HBO announced it would stream some of its programmes on Facebook. Offering a cash incentive could encourage more publishers to upload on the platform. While YouTube gives content creators 55% of the revenue from ads displayed before their videos, Facebook will split the 55% it is offering between several creators.

“It’s not an unusual, or generous model,” said Ms Marouli. “But we could see a monetisation battle between Facebook and YouTube, to entice creators onto the platform.” Facebook made $3.3bn in ad revenue in the first quarter of 2015, 73% of it from mobile ads. “Facebook is very adaptable,” said Ms Marouli. “In 2012, they had zero mobile-ad revenue. In two years, they’ve raised that to over 60% of their ad income. “Based on our forecasts, by 2018 Facebook will have 25% of online video ad revenue in Europe, and more in the US,” said Ms Marouli. Private universities in Ohio have a 53 percent 4-year graduation rate, compared to 34 percent for state schools. Ohio Dominican University announced that it will join the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC) effective July 1, 2017. ODU currently is a member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). In all, five GLIAC member schools are announcing a move to the G-MAC. The other institutions are: Hillsdale College, Findlay University, Walsh University, and Lake Erie College. In addition, Malone University announced its plans to move from the GLIAC to the G-MAC in May. The G-MAC is an NCAA Division II athletic conference with member institutions in Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee. “We have valued our partnership as a member of the GLIAC,” said ODU President Peter Cimbolic, Ph.D. “However, our move to the G-MAC will place us in a conference comprised entirely of private colleges and universities that are similar to ODU in mission, size and scope. Competing in the G-MAC will give us the opportunity to build new geographic rivalries with

schools that are much closer to ODU. Moreover, the reduced travel time between conference members will be a welcome benefit for our studentathletes, with less time on the road and more time to focus on academics.” Ohio Dominican fields teams in 16 varsity men’s and women’s sports, and plans to begin a full schedule of G-MAC competition in its first year in the conference. During the next two years, ODU will continue to compete as a full participant in the GLIAC. “I am deeply appreciative to the GLIAC for everything they have done to support our institution and our student-athletes,” said Jeff Blair, Ohio Dominican’s athletic director. “The conference was instrumental in supporting our successful transition to NCAA II. We are excited to have the opportunity to continue to compete against some of the best Division II schools in the region and allow our student-athletes to continue their academic focus and their excellent classroom achievements.”
