l Sol de Ohio ha recibido varias llamadas de trabajadores hispanos indocumentados que son maltratados por sus empleadores. Hace unas semanas un grupo de trabajadores del hotel The Fort Rapids Indoor Water Park and Resort llamó al periódico por los maltratos que recibía en esas instalaciones, pero por temor a ser perseguidos por las autoridades de Inmigración, dsistieron de la denuncia. El hotel fue cerrado por la Policía de Columbus este 29 de Febrero. La más reciente denuncia de maltratos fue recibida la semana pasada. Se trata de un grupo de trabajadores que eran subcontrata-

dos por una compañía de limpieza, propiedad de un nacional ecuatoriano. Según denuncian este individuo les retiene durante meses sus salarios. En este caso los trabajadores tampoco quisieron hacer una denuncia formal. A continuación ofrecemos algunas orientaciones para los trabajadores hispanos indocumentados, publicadas por la organización de derechos laborales 9to5. org: Como trabajador/a indocumentado(a), ¿Cuáles son mis derechos bajo las leyes de salarios y horas? Las leyes federales de salarios y horas definen cómo se le debería de pagar. Esta ley establece sus derechos a un salario

mínimo, pago por tiempo extra, descansos, propinas y otras formas de salario. Por lo general, los trabajadores indocumentados reciben los mismos derechos de salarios y horas que cualquier otro trabajador. Por ejemplo, un empleador no puede negar a pagarle a usted diciendo que usted no debió haber estado trabajando en primer lugar porque no tiene papeles legales. Presentar un Reclamo de Salarios: Si usted prefiere presentar un reclamo, puede hacerlo ya sea ante el Departamento de Trabajo de los Estados Unidos (DOL por sus siglas en inglés) o una agencia estatal que enfuerza las leyes laborales. Ninguna de estas dos agencias

debería cuestionarlo(a) acerca de su estado de migración ni reportar su falta de estado legal si de alguna manera ésta información se revela. ¿Como trabajador/a indocumentado, ¿Corro algún riesgo si decido presentar un reclamo legal contra mi empleador? Sí. El riesgo más grande que puede correr al presentar un reclamo contra su empleador es que el empleador tome represalias contra usted. Tomar represalias significa que su empleador actúe o amenace con actuar contra usted en el lugar de trabajo, reporte o amenace con reportarlo(a) con ICE (antes el “Servicio de Naturalización e Inmigración” ahora el “Departamento de Seguridad Nacional”) debido a que usted presentó un reclamo contra su empleador. Sin embargo, tomar represalias es ilegal. Además, los empleadores que tomen represalias contra usted debido a que usted se quejó acerca de las condiciones laborales peligrosas,

están infringiendo la ley de manera doble. Sin embargo, son los trabajadores indocumentados que enfrentan mayor riesgo cuando los empleadores toman represalias contra ellos, ya que esos empleadores podrían reportarlos al ICE (Departamento de Seguridad Nacional). Aún si presenta un reclamo de toma de represalias contra su empleador por reportarlo a ICE, usted no está protegido contra el ICE, ya que en general, ICE está permitido de darle seguimiento al reporte de su empleador. Si ICE hace el seguimiento, puede tratar de deportarlo(a). Aún peor, si usted usó información o documentos falsos cuando usted solicitó su trabajo, a usted se le puede incriminar legalmente, multar, deportar y/ o prohibirle regresar para siempre para vivir y trabajar en los Estados Unidos. Estas serias penalidades pueden aplicar aún si usted está casado(a) con un(a) ciudadano(a) estadounidense, si tiene hijos estadounidenses, o si ha vivido en los Estados

Unidos por muchos años. La decisión de presentar o no un reclamo legal contra su empleador es, en el caso de los trabajadores indocumentados, una que debe tomar sólo después de una reflexión cuidadosa, y sólo después de haber obtenido consejo legal de abogados competentes en los ramos de ambas leyes de empleo y de migración. Si estoy pensando en presentar un reclamo por discriminación o de salarios, ¿qué debería hacer para protegerme? Antes de que usted presente un reclamo, debería llamar una organización legal de la comunidad que trabaje con inmigrantes indocumentados. Estas organizaciones tendrán, o conocerán, asesores quienes pueden asistirle apropiadamente a tomar una decisión para presentar un reclamo si es que está dispuesto a hacerlo. Usted debería recibir ayuda legal de abogados expertos en los ramos de ambas leyes de empleo y de migración antes de que tome una decisión de presentar un reclamo.

as elecciones presidenciales de noviembre en Estados Unidos contarán con la participación de más de 13 millones de electores latinos, casi dos millones más que en el 2012, de acuerdo con estimaciones publicadas este martes. De acuerdo con un estudio lanzado por la Asociación Nacional de Electos Latinos (NALEO), ese total podrá ser todavía mayor según quienes sean los candidatos finales en disputa y de los esfuerzos específicos desplegados por los partidos para alcanzar a ese segmento del electo-

rado. Para Arturo Vargas, director ejecutivo de NALEO, el contingente de electorado latino ha aumentado por lo menos 17% en cada

elección presidencial con respecto al pleito anterior, pero ningún candidato de cualquiera de los dos grandes partidos puede afirmar que tiene influen-

cia decisiva sobre ellos. “Con más de 13,1 millones de latinos que se esperan concurran a las urnas para hacer escuchar su voz, ningún candidato

o partido político puede permitirse tomar nuestro voto como asegurado si quiere ganar la carrera a la Casa Blanca”, dijo Vargas a la prensa al presentar el estudio de NALEO. Ese enorme escenario proporciona una gran diversidad, y Vargas añadió que “ya nadie puede esperar que los latinos voten a un candidato apenas porque tiene nombre latino o hable español”. En opinión de Vargas, el estimado de 13,1 millones de votos latinos “es solamente el piso” previsto, ya que en Estados Unidos viven 27,3 millones de latinos que están habilitados a votar, casi la mitad de ellos pertenecientes a la

llamada ‘Generación Y’, que alcanzó la vida adulta alrededor del año 2000. as 55 cortes de inmigración de Estados Unidos han emitido 10.142 órdenes de deportación para menores centroamericanos que llegaron sin la compañía de un adulto al país desde 2014 por la frontera con México. Datos de la Oficina Ejecutiva de Revisión de Inmigración (EOIR) a los que tuvo acceso Efe indican que, entre el 24 de julio de 2014 y el 26 de enero de 2016, 8.912 de las sentencias de repatriación para los menores de El Salvador, Honduras, y Guatemala fueron dictados en ausencia. Y vista la actuación del Servicio de Inmigración y Aduanas (ICE) desde inicios del año su objetivo es ir cumpliendo con esas órdenes más pronto que tarde y así mandar un mensaje a los países centroamericanos sobre cuál será el destino de aquellos que se planteen entrar ilegalmente al país. “Desde hace un mes, cuando comenzaron las capturas en las calles, los barrios hispanos han vivido una situación de angustia y terror”, dijo Byron Martínez de la organización de derechos civiles Unidos We Stand, del condado de Gaston, en Carolina del Norte (EE.UU.). En la última semana de enero, agentes de ICE empezaron a arrestar a indocumentados con un perfil muy preciso, jóve-

José Hernández París, director ejecutivo de la Coalición Latinoamericana de Charlotte, comentó que en una reunión con ICE en la que se les pidió que no arrestaran a jóvenes en las paradas de los autobuses escolares o rumbo a las escuelas, los oficiales se referían a los jóvenes siempre como “adultos” y evitaron en todo momento la palabra “estudiantes”. “Esta ciudad no debe tolerar estrategias que ponen en peligro a los menores y aislan a comunidades enteras que se han convertido en parte integral de esta ciudad”, manifestó Hernández París, al afirmar que entre 15 y 20

Since turning 50 in 2013, the Latin American filmmaker has begun a new phase in his career that started with last year’s Best Picture winner Birdman and has continued with his most recent film, The Revenant, which scooped him the top director award on Sunday. They are films made by a creator obsessed with the fleetingness of time and with his own advancing years, but also by a Mexican who has conquered Hollywood at the same time as Donald Trump has been xenophobia across the country. After calling for fair and dignified treatment for his compatriots when he collected his Best Director statuette for Birdman in 2015, neither he did not forget about them this time, reminding the millions watching across the globe that not everyone has the same luck as him and demanding an end to “all prejudice” and “tribal thinking.” It was a declaration that showed a filmmaker faithful to his roots and with a personality that isn’t ba-

sed on the market or on political convenience, but rather a deep capacity for self-criticism. It matters little whether or not the critics like his work. Neither do the attacks that some make leave much of a mark. In creating his works, Iñárritu fights on a daily basis with an even tougher adversary: the judge that lives inside him. Talking to EL PAÍS during the making of The Revenant, the director likened this inner voice to a member of the Inquisition, “a guy you present any case to and he sends you to be burned, a terrorist you cannot negotiate with: that internal voice is what enables me to find the primordial idea of the stories.” It is a tension that comes across on his shoots. Let’s denounce worker abuse Undocumented Hispanic workers that suffer workplace abuse should not continue to live like slaves in the US. It is true that their “undocumented” status makes them vulnerable before the law; however, that law provides resources to protect them.

Is the turning point of the primaries near?

In this edition, El Sol de Ohio provides some advice that can be useful for those victimized by these abuses. We have information that workplace abuse is on the rise in Columbus. It is very possible that this is a phenomenon caused by the anti-immigrant sentiment that Donald Trump’s campaign promotes on the media with great impact. In the midst of an intense presidential campaign, these phenomena are common. Hispanic leaders must be aware and receptive to these denunciations. We cannot let hate and the fanaticism of a group of extremists crush our Hispanic community, a community that is a fundamental part of this nation due to its valuable contributions, like other important immigrant communities.

Es cierto que su status de “indocumentados” les hace vulnerables frente a la ley, sin embargo, la propia ley provee recursos para protegerles. En la presente edición El Sol de Ohio publica algunos consejos que pueden ser útiles para quienes son víctimas de estos abusos. Tenemos información de que han aumentado en Columbus los casos de maltratos laborales. Es muy posible que este sea un fenómeno inducido por el ambiente de anti inmigrantes que con gran impacto promueve en los medios de comunicación la campaña política de Donald Trump. En medio de una intensa campaña electoral presidencial estos fenómenos son comunes. Los líderes hispanos deben estar atentos y receptivos a estas denuncias. month has passed since the Iowa caucuses. I ended my last column saying that Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton will be the nominees, but not with the confidence of an impossibly unshrinkable lead. Half of this prediction is coming to pass. The other half does not entirely fall into line. As I said before, Bernie Sanders does not connect with minorities, Latinos included. Whether Clinton connects with minorities in good faith or opportunistically is another story, but Sanders does not get any closer. An analysis from the Christian Science Monitor reveals it: regarding the sad situation of water contamination in Flint, Michigan, where its population is mostly African-American and poverty reaches 41%, Sanders squandered chances to extend his message to voters who are not White, colege-age, progressive young voters, which are not enough to win the nomination. In turn, Clinton has won over the remaining Democratic voters.

On the GOP side, none of the remaining candidates deserves my support. Not even Governor Kasich. But almost all of them have a more rational political platform than Donald Trump’s, whose strong suit are insults and throw tantrums when someone gives him a hard time. But the worse thing is that he has connected with an ignorant and misinformed sector of the electorate that by welcoming someone who “tells it like it is” it is projecting harmful political sentiments. Whether Trump really thinks that way or pretends to does not matter. What does matter is that he has a multitude of voters who support him blindly. Meanwhile, a Washington Post editorial thinks that the RNC does not want to stop Trump and instead has a premeditated desire to suffer an electoral debacle on Election Day. As things looks now, a Sanders unable to win support outside his electoral base and a handful of Republican candidates that do not “tell it like it

is” have little possibilities of winning, now that we are approaching a month where everything can be decided. On the Super Tuesday primaries of March 1st, 22% of Democratic delegates and another 22% of GOP delegates will be chosen. Then, from March 15 on, GOP primaries will be “winner-take-all” contests. And finally, the vast majority of Democratic super-delegates has sided with Clinton. In these circumstances, Sanders, Ted Cruz, Ben Carson, Marco Rubio and Governor Kasich must win enough delegates to avoid another Clinton and Trump coronation ball. Otherwise, both candidates will clinch their respective nominations by a landslide and not narrowly, as it was thought to be after the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary. The turning point of the primaries may be near.

My 10 favorite books: Marcus Samuelsson

The next in the series is Marcus Samuelsson, the chef behind Red Rooster in Harlem and Kitchen & Table, a concept restaurant with Clarion Hotels in Sweden and Norway. He shares his list exclusively with T. “White Girls,” Hilton Als I like how Hilton Als deals with issues of gender in this book. It made me pause and think numerous times while I was reading. I am constantly thinking about these themes, especially in the culinary world, where women are really becoming more and more

Marcus Samuelsson empowered and important to the industry. “Charlie Trotter’s,” Charlie Trotter The culinary world was devastated when we lost Charlie Trotter in 2013, but I am glad that his cookbooks live on. His first book was published in the ’90s and really helped to secure his place as one of the great chefs on the end of the millennium. “Harlem, U.S.A.,” Dawoud Bey Dawoud recently brought a copy of his book to me at my Harlem restaurant, Red Rooster. This look at the neighborhood in the ’70s sums up why I love living here. Dawoud is the street photographer who captured the swagger of the people and life exactly as it was lived back then. “Go Tell it on the Mountain,” James Baldwin

One of the first books I read when I moved to New York City, I like that James Baldwin imparts some of his own experience growing up in Harlem into this novel. It deals with issues of race and the church, and how both can be positive and negative factors in life. “Miles: The Autobiography,” Miles Davis and Quincy Troupe If I could have a meal with anyone, it would be Miles Davis. It would be so cool to hear his stories and sit back and talk about jazz. Miles moved to New York around the same age as I did, and he was a transformative player in the evolution of jazz music as we know it. This autobiography was his chance to tell all.

“I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” Maya Angelou It was hard to choose which Maya Angelou work I wanted to include in this list, but I ultimately decided I wanted the one that her most definitive. This is the book that made her a voice to be heard. I was also tempted to include her book of poetry, “Just Give Me a Cool Drink of Water ’fore I Diiie,” for which she was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. “The Autobiography of Malcolm X,” Alex Haley and Malcolm X I was certainly intrigued by this book because of the topic — Malcolm X is a fascinating guy in the black rights movement. However, what really makes me appreciate this book is the top-notch jo-

urnalism that Alex Haley exhibited, putting together these stories of Malcolm X’s. I think about this book whenever I am at Red Rooster, located appropriately on Malcolm X Blvd. “New Orleans Cookbook,” Lena Richard This woman was the real deal. She paved the way for Leah Chase during the ’50s and ’60s, and she paved the way for women in restaurants today. The amazing female chefs in my own restaurants look up to these strong women of the early 20th century. Her recipes are nothing but good old-fashioned comfort food, which I use a lot of in Red Rooster and Streetbird, my Harlem restaurants. “Driving the King” Ravi Howard

Howard is a good friend, and a master at creating fictionalized accounts based on true experiences. This is his newest work, published just last year, and it’s just as gripping as his first. This time, Ravi focuses on Nat King Cole, another man I admire. “Block Party: New York City Soul of Summer,” by Anderson Zaca This is an amazing collection of black-and-white photos of life on the city streets in the summer that really inspired me when opening Streetbird Rotisserie in Harlem. The block party is something so quintessential that I love about living in New York, and this book gets the vibe, the people and the community just so.

I live in Barcelona and work in London (well, sometimes)

lmost two years ago, I wrote a blog post explaining (in a jokey way) how the price of rents in London made it cheaper to live in Barcelona and commute back and forth every day to the British capital. Even renting a three-bedroomed apartment. The story went viral, touching a nerve with a lot of people facing high living costs, and at the same time dreaming of a better life in the sun. Two years later, I found myself having to move house. Rents in that time had risen between 10 percent and 20 percent, and I found myself thinking that the idea in my blog post hadn’t been so crazy. In the end, I put together a plan that allowed me to live in Barcelona, heading back to the office in London several times a month, and even save a little money, in return for exchanging my shared apartment on the outskirts of London for a two-bedroomed place in the center of Barcelona. A friend who worked at the Daily Mirror interviewed me. Then The Lad Bible and Buzzfeed picked

up on the story. Contrary to what some newspapers have said, no, I don’t travel back and forth every day to London. I spend my time between the two cities (most of it in Barcelona), and work from here in the Catalan capital the rest of the time. I work for a social network company, helping train clients, and can work from home or in a coworking space. When I go to London, I get up at 4.30am (it’s hard, but not as bad as I thought), am on the Aerobus at 5am, and at El Prat airport by 5.30am. The flight leaves at 7am, and with the time difference I am at Gatwick at 8am. I tend to arrive at

my office by 9.30am, with a strong coffee and a bacon sandwich. That’s five hours: it used to take me two hours door to door. I tend not to return home the same day, although I could. A kind friend in London has a spare bed. When I return to Barcelona, I usually get home around 11pm. The choice of Barcelona was not a hard one. I spent a year here a decade ago, and since then have returned several times on holiday. It is still my favorite city in the world, and I didn’t give it a second thought when the idea came to me. As for my friends and family, some are surprised. After my first blog post,

A friend who worked at the Daily Mirror interviewed me. Then The Lad. everybody knew about my plan, but there was still widespread surprise when they found out I was going to put it into practice. Given that they now have a place to stay in Barcelona, there have been few complaints. I now know a few people here, but this is a friendly city and I think it is pretty easy to make friends here (that said, I haven’t had much luck on Tinder so far: I’m available for dates in the city). For me, Barcelona has everything: sea, mountains, history, cultu-

re, food, nightlife, and I love the place. Now that I am living here, I understand why people sometimes complain about the number of tourists and the way some of them behave. Barcelona is a small city (particularly the old quarter) and at the moment, it is overflowing with visitors. Some newspapers have asked me if there are any disadvantages to my decision and new life, but the truth is I can’t see any! There are some things (and people) I miss from my country, but for the moment, I am very happy with my decision. In fact, a lot of people have told me that they would like to do something similar themselves, given the current situation in London. I don’t know how long I will continue living like this, but for the moment, I am enjoying myself and having a great time. Una corte federal de Houston condenó hoy a 40 años de prisión a un mexicano, extraditado a Estados Unidos, acusado de encabezar una red de trata que obligaba a mujeres indocumentadas a prostituirse en burdeles del este de Texas. La Oficina del procurador federal para el sureste deTexas informó que Gerardo “El Gallo” Salazar, fue sentenciado este lunes por la magistrada federal Vanessa Gilmore a la pena más alta posible de 40 años de prisión. Salazar se había declarado culpable en octubre pasado de cuatro cargos de albergar a extranjeras indocumentadas para efectos de prostitución. El hombre, de 52 años de edad y originario de la Ciudad de México, admitió en la Corte que contrabandeo menores de edad y mujeres jóvenes de México a Estados Unidos mediante engaños y amenazas de daño físico y coacción psicológica para explotarlas sexualmente en bares de Houston. Su confesión se dio como parte de un acuerdo a cam-

Sus cómplices fueron detenidos en Houston y en sus respectivas declaraciones de culpabilidad en 2006 admitieron ser parte de una organización que operó entre principios de 2004 y hasta el verano de 2005. Aceptaron que el objetivo de la banda era reclutar, convencer, albergar, transportar, proveer y obtener a jóvenes mexicanas para fines de prostitución.

Antes de cerrar el abdomen se debe revisar el buen flujo sanguíneo y que la fijación a los ligamentos sea suficientemente fuerte para mantener el embarazo. En caso que una mujer sea aprobada para recibir el trasplante, se le deben retirar los óvulos de los ovarios, al igual que en la fertilización in vitro, luego se deben congelar los embriones, que serán implantados 12 meses después de que sane el trasplante. ementia rates can vary significantly among Americans of different racial and ethnic groups, even if they’re in the same region of the country, a new study finds. Researchers analyzed data on more than 274,000 people from six racial and ethnic groups in Northern California who were members of Kaiser Permanente, a large private health care system. Using records of patient visits, the researchers found that the average annual rate of dementia was 26.6 cases per 1,000 for blacks; 22.2 per 1,000 for American Indians/Alaskan Natives; 19.6 per 1,000 for Hispanics and Pacific Islanders; 19.3 per 1,000 for whites; and 15.2 cases per 1,000 for Asian-Americans. The researchers calculated that among people who reach age 65 without dementia, 38 percent of blacks, 35 percent of American Indians/Alaskan Natives, 32 percent of Hispanics, 30 percent of whites, 28 percent of Asian-Americans and 25 percent of Pacific Islanders would develop dementia in the next 25 years.

The study was published online Feb. 10 in Alzheimer’s & Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer’s Association. “Most research on inequalities in dementia includes only one to two racial and ethnic groups, primarily whites and blacks,” said study lead author Elizabeth Rose Mayeda. She is a postdoctoral fellow in the University of California,

San Francisco’s Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. “This is the only research that directly compares dementia for these six racial and ethnic groups, representing the true aging demographic of the United States in a single study population,” she said in a Kaiser news release. Even in the groups found to be at lowest risk, the

lifetime risk of developing dementia is high, said principal investigator Rachel Whitmer, a research scientist at the Kaiser Permanente Division of Research. “In every racial and ethnic group, over one in four people who survive to age 65 can expect to be diagnosed with dementia in their lifetime.” She said the study has major public health implica-

tions. “These findings underscore the need to better understand risk factors for dementia throughout life to identify strategies to eliminate these inequalities,” Whitmer said in the news release. The next step is to learn what’s behind the racial and ethnic differences in dementia rates. “Based on the present study, we cannot determine

alf the teens seen in a U.S. hospital emergency rooms reported being victims of violence or cyberbullying, and a quarter reported symptoms akin to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a new study says. Researchers at Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence, R.I., looked at more than 350 teens treated for any reason in the hospital’s ER. They found that 46.5 percent reported violence at the hands of other teens, nearly 47 percent said they had been targets of cyberbullying, and nearly 59 percent said they had been exposed to community violence. More than 23 percent reported PTSD symptoms, nearly 14 percent had moderate or serious symptoms of depression, and about 11 percent said they had suicidal thoughts within the previous year. The study findings were published online recent-

ly in the journal General Hospital Psychiatry. The study found a strong link between PTSD symptoms and being subjected to cyberbullying

or violence, exposure to community violence, and alcohol or drug use. Few of the teens with PTSD symptoms said they had received any mental health

care in the past year. The researchers said their findings show that cyberbullying, violence and PTSD are common and connected among teens,

and that early identification and treatment are vital. “PTSD in adolescents has been associated with long-term functional im-

pairment, including poor physical health, academic failure and increased need for medical services,” study leader Dr. Megan Ranney said in a hospital news release. “But, despite the availability of effective treatment, PTSD is currently underdiagnosed, underreported and undertreated, especially among children and adolescents,” she added. PTSD can harm teens’ long-term quality of life and is unlikely to improve without treatment, Ranney noted. “These results should serve as a reminder to parents, schools and physicians that these problems are prevalent in our community,” she said. “This study also highlights that teens with a history of cyberbullying or peer violence are more likely to have PTSD, which is a very treatable disease if properly identified and addressed.”. ¿Por qué Jesús fue perseguido, enjuiciado, condenado y cruciﬁcado?

gentío gritaba: “¡Hosanna! ¡Bendito el que viene en el nombre del Señor!”. (San Marcos 11:10). Este acontecimiento llamó poderosamente la atención a la autoridad religiosa y gubernamental. Después de la apoteósica entrada un domingo en Jerusalén, Jesús fue al templo al otro día y comenzó a echar de allí a los que hacían negocios y cambiaban dinero. No permitía que nadie pasara por el templo llevando cosas. Enseñó que las Escrituras dicen: “Mi casa será declarada casa de oración para todas las naciones, pero se había hecho cueva

de ladrones”. (San Marcos 11:17). Posteriormente del acto de la purificación del templo se acrecentó la persecución a Jesús, fue traicionado por Judas Iscariote, uno de sus discípulos, apresado y llevado ante la Junta Suprema (Sanedrín) de los judíos, e interrogado por Caifás el Sumo Sacerdote. Este le preguntó: “¿Eres tú el Mesías, el hijo de Dios bendito?” Jesús le dijo: “Si, yo soy”. Ante esta afirmación, el Sumo Sacerdote se rasgó las ropas en señal de indignación y consideró que el Nazareno había dicho palabras ofensivas contra

Dios, expresiones catalogadas como blasfemia, y culpable de muerte. (San Mateo 26:65). Los miembros de la Junta Suprema apoyaron con unanimidad que Jesús era reo y debía morir. La cúpula de los dirigentes religiosos llevó a Jesús ante Poncio Pilato, prefecto/gobernador de Jerusalén, para ser enjuiciado. El Nazareno fue interrogado y condenado a morir, instigado por los jefes religiosos judíos y la conveniencia política del representante del Imperio Romano. Jesús fue crucificado por la combinación de algunos de los males arriba señalados; pues, a pesar de la conciencia crítica y de los valores éticos-morales, que supuestamente deben tener los seres humanos; hay tendencia de ser malévolo. Nos peleamos sin escrúpulo, robamos sin vergüenza, traicionamos sin remordimiento, y matamos sin contemplación. Así sucedió con Jesús el “Cristo Incomparable”, como le tituló el doctor John Stott.

l chileno Mario Kreutzberger, que como Don Francisco fue visto en la pantalla chica durante décadas por millones de hispanos en Estados Unidos y América Latina, regresará a la televisión con un espacio de entrevistas, informó la cadena estadounidense Telemundo. Kreutzberger, que en septiembre pasado bajó el telón de su programa de variedades “Sábado Gigante” luego de 53 años ininterrumpidos al aire, “aportará su experiencia al equipo de Telemundo Noticias y fungirá como corresponsal de noticias especial en una serie de entrevistas de alto perfil”, indicó la cadena en un comunicado. Además, el acuerdo entre Kreutzberger y Telemundo le permitirá al chileno de 75 años “desarrollar y producir contenido original y formatos para los hispanos en los Estados Unidos y otras audiencias alrededor del mundo”, según Telemundo, una de las principales cadenas hispanas en Estados Unidos. Telemundo resaltó que en “Sábado Gigante”, que llegó semanalmente a millones hogares en Estados Unidos y países de América Latina, Kreutzberger realizó gran número de entrevistas de alto perfil, como por ejemplo a los presidentes estadounidenses George W. l Departamento del Tesoro de Estados Unidos reiteró su llamado al Congreso para aprobar el plan de recuperación ofrecido por el presidente Barack Obama a fin de sacar a Puerto Rico de la crisis financiera que enfrenta. “Lo que empezó como una recesión se ha convertido en una crisis fiscal y de liquidez que muestra signos de volverse también en una crisis humanitaria”, dijo este jueves ante legisladores Antonio Weiss, consejero del Departamento del Tesoro. Al comparecer ante un panel de la Cámara de Representantes, Weiss aludió la descapitalización del sistema de pensiones de la isla y el impacto que su agravamiento tendrá sobre los 330 mil jubilados puertorriqueños que dependen de este ingreso. “Una falla para proteger esos pagos causaría un irreparable daño a los jubilados, y agregaría un

mayor estrés a la economía de Puerto Rico”, añadió. En octubre pasado la administración Obama presentó al Congreso un plan para reestructurar la deuda de la isla con una supervisión fiscal, pero ello requiere modificar la cláusula territorial de la constitución estadunidense, algo que sólo el poder legislativo puede hacer. El funcionario se refirió también al sostenido y

creciente éxodo de puertorriqueños, como resultado de lo cual la población de la isla se redujo 10 por ciento en la última década, 2.5 por ciento del cual se registró tan sólo en 2015. “La población de edad avanzada representa más del 23 por ciento de la población, uno de los radios más elevados del país, y el número de niños menores de cinco años ha decrecido 37 por ciento desde 2000.

Sólo el fin de la crisis y el regreso del crecimiento (económico) podrá detener este viciado ciclo”, señaló. olombia’s indigenous agency (Onic) has expressed concern over the presence of fighters from the ELN, or National Liberation Army, in areas traditionally held by the Farc rebel group. The government and the Farc are expected to sign a historic peace accord on 23 March. The head of the agency, Luis Fernando Arias, urged the authorities to investigate. He said the indigenous people fear the presence of the ELN on their land. Indigenous groups in many parts of the country have found ELN propaganda material in their areas, said Mr Arias. “Since the Farc declared its unilateral ceasefire [in December 2014] we have begun to see evidence of presence of the ELN in areas of Vale del Cauca, Norte del Cauca, Choco and Narino where they had never been,” he said. “So people began to ask themselves if there had been a change of command,” added Mr Arias. It was founded in 1964 and is thought to have reached

its peak in the 1990s and the 2000s. It is now estimated to have 8,000 fighters in its ranks. The ELN is Colombia’s second largest rebel group. El Tiempo newspaper has reported that the ELN seems to be recruiting Farc rebels who disagree with the peace deal or are insecure about their future in civilian life. Farc negotiators and the Colombian government have been holding peace

talks in the Cuban capital, Havana, since November 2012. The two sides have announced they are willing to sign an agreement on 23 March, putting an end to more than five decades of conflict. The agreement would then need to be approved by the Colombian people in a referendum. More than 220,000 people have been killed and millions have been displaced in unrest which began in

the 1960s and has also involved other guerrilla groups and right-wing paramilitaries. Preliminary talks between the government and the ELN started two years ago during negotiations with the Farc. Guatemala court has sentenced two former members of the military to 360 years in jail for the murder, rape and sexual enslavement of indigenous women. Francisco Reyes Giron and Heriberto Valdez Asij were found guilty of crimes against humanity. The historic ruling is the first successful prosecution for sexual violence committed during Guatemala’s military conflict in the 1980s. There were jubilant scenes in court as the judge read out the sentence. “This is historic, it is a great step for women and above all for the victims,” said Nobel Peace Prize winner Rigoberta Menchu, who attended the hearing.

Former TV journalist Mirian Dutra says Mr Cardoso arranged the $3,000 monthly payments through the firm, Brasif. The transfers began in 2002 - a year before Mr Cardoso left office. Mr Cardoso denies the allegations. Brasif also says Ms Dutra was paid for work she did for them and the former leader had nothing to do with it. Ms Dutra worked as a reporter for Brazil’s Globo TV for 35 years, losing her job last December. “I don’t want to take this to my grave,” she said said in interview with Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper. Mr Cardoso has acknowledged the six-year-

long affair with her, which came to an end before he became president of Brazil. Ms Dutra said their relationship ended when she refused Mr Cardoso’s suggestion that she should

have an abortion, which is illegal in Brazil. After her son Tomas was born, she asked Globo TV to transfer her to Lisbon. After a few years, they moved to Spain. Mr Cardoso supported Ms

Dutra and her son abroad, she said. But between December 2002 and December 2006 the money came from Brasif, a company that had a licence to operate duty-free shops at a num-

ber of Brazilian airports, she said. She said she signed a fictitious contract with the company but never worked for them. “He sent me money through this company. I

have evidence,” she said. “It was all arranged by my sister’s husband, Fernando Lemos, who was the top lobbyist in Brasilia at the time,” added Ms Dutra. Mr Cardoso has admitted sending money to Ms Dutra and Tomas abroad, but denies using Brasif or any other company for that purpose. Brasif said in a statement that it hired Ms Dutra to do research on duty-free shops in European airports. It confirmed the payments but said the former president had no involvement in their decision to hire her. Mr Cardoso never transferred any money to the company, Brasif added. The former president recognised the paternity of Tomas and bought him a flat in Barcelona. He says a 2011 DNA tests proved that Tomas was not his son. Ms Dutra questions the validity and accuracy of the test.

mong the headaches that come with a divorce is figuring out how to pay for college, because divorce often takes a toll on a family’s finances. “You had one bucket of money that was going to one household,” says Diane Pappas, a certified divorce financial analyst. “Now you have to split it between two households.” Below are five tips for students with divorced parents, including how to determine which parent’s income information to include on your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (known as theFAFSA) and how to maximize the amount of financial aid you’re eligible for. 1. Fill out the FAFSA as soon as possible You need to fill out the FAFSA to be considered for federal grants, workstudy, student loans and some scholarships. Some financial aid is awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, so submit the FAFSA as soon as possible to be eligible for the most aid. For help filling it out, including a tutorial that walks you through the application step by step, check out NerdWallet’s FAFSA Guide. 2. Understand which parent’s tax information to list on the FAFSA If you’re an independent student, you don’t need to list either parent’s tax information on your FAFSA. If you’re a dependent student, you need to answer questions about at least one parent in the Parent Demographics section of the FAFSA. If your parents are divorced or separated but still live together, provide information about both of them on your FAFSA. If your parents are divorced or separated and don’t live together, the FAFSA will consider only your custodial parent’s income. For financial aid purposes, your custodial parent is the one you lived with the most in the last 12 months, or the parent who provi-

ded you with the most financial support. It may be different from the parent who has legal custody. If your custodial parent is remarried, list your stepparent on the FAFSA too. There’s one exception: On the question that asks about your parents’ highest education levels, provide answers about both of your biological or adoptive parents, even if they’re divorced. Don’t answer this question about a stepparent. 3. When possible, be strategic about whom you choose as your custodial parent If you lived with each parent for an equal amount of time in the previous year, and your parents provided equal financial support, you can choose which parent’s information to include on the FAFSA. To be eligible for the most aid, list the parent with the lower income. Some families strategically create their divorce agreements to make the lower-earning parent the custodial parent, Pappas says. A 51-49 percent split between the custodial and noncustodial parents is

enough to ensure that the lower-earning custodial parent fills out the FAFSA, giving the student the best chance of qualifying for the most financial aid. 4. Know the divorce details The FAFSA asks you to report the date of your parents’ divorce or separation, and some schools’ financial aid offices will even ask for the divorce agreement, Pappas says. You’ll also have to indicate how much child support your custodial parent (the one you chose to list on your FAFSA) paid or received in the previous year. Child support, which isn’t taxable for the parent who receives it, is different from alimony, says Joe Orsolini, a college financial planner in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. Alimony that your custodial parent receives is taxable, so it’s reported on the FAFSA in his or her taxable income; there’s no need to report it again separately. “Many families don’t realize the difference and mistakenly include the amount twice on the FAFSA, which will cost them

financial aid,” Orsolini says. 5. If the divorce was recent, be prepared for tax complications The most common FAFSA complications related to divorce happen when the divorce is recent, says Ron Day, director of financial aid at Kennesaw State University in Kennesaw, Georgia. That’s because you typically complete the FAFSA using the previous year’s tax information. For example, you’ll use 2015 tax information for the 2016-17 FAFSA. If your parents file a joint tax return for the 2015 tax year and divorce soon after, the tax information you reported on the FAFSA won’t reflect your parents’ new status. However, if you provide the right additional paperwork (you’ll typically need a W-2 form for each parent), your college’s financial aid office can usually work with you to correct any FAFSA mistakes that resulted from a recent divorce, Day says. ODU Students to Spend Spring Break on Service Mission Trip to Haiti

hile many college students will spend spring break relaxing and preparing for the remainder of the academic year, 16 students, staff and alumni from Ohio Dominican University will be more than 1,500 miles away serving among the most underprivileged in the poverty-stricken country of Haiti. Each spring break, ODU students and members of the campus community participate in a University-sponsored service mission trip. Groups have previously traveled to places such as El Salvador and Guatemala. This year’s group is made up of alumni, staff, and 13 undergraduate and graduate students, including six students in its Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies program. After more than a year of planning, the group will leave on the nine-day long trip on March 5. During the trip, the group will participate in a variety of service activities. They’ll spend four days assisting orphanages, including New Life Children’s Home, which provides care to as many as 130 children. Many of the children are sick and more than two dozen have special needs. They also will spend several days in villages throughout the region, providing triage medical care, a feeding program and other important services.

100 years ago, Leap Day encouraged women to propose to men It still hasn’t caught on

t’s Feb. 29, a day that comes around only once every four years. In the early 20th century, Leap Year meant more than an additional day on the calendar: It became a chance for women to propose marriage to men — at any point during the year, not just on Feb. 29. The tradition’s roots are uncertain, though historian Katherine Parkin of Monmouth University says it may have originated in Irish or Scottish folklore. By 1908, there were Leap Year postcards like the ones pictured here, portraying husbandhunting women as threatening, masculine and violent. The men, on the other hand, look scared, small and emasculated. “The images clearly convey the ugliness and desperateness of these women,” says Parkin, who maintains a database of Leap Year postcards from 1904 to 1920. Leap Year had the potential to disrupt traditional

gender roles, Parkin says, but instead had the effect of entrenching them. The postcards, she notes, use humor and shame to ridicule women who might dare to take control of their romantic fates. She’s found some evidence, she says, of women proposing marriage to men in the early 1900s. But the tradition never took off. “Instead of transforming it into an accepted practice, the popular culture mocked and belittled women’s proposals,” Parkin wrote in a 2011 article on Leap

Year marriage proposals. “Scorned and ridiculed for trespassing against male privilege, along with those who wore pants or participated in politics, female proposers learned that seeking rights threatened those who held power. In the end, the leap year custom helped ensure that men continued to hold the power in matters of matrimony.” A century later, Parkin doesn’t think much has changed. There’s still “a real suspicion” of women who propose marriage to men, she said in a phone interview, adding that she thinks marriage proposals have become more traditional, not less. In another example of traditionalism, the proportion of grooms asking their in-laws for permission to marry has increased in recent years. And we’re still uncomfortable with women earning more than their partners, Parkin notes. The discomfort with women-initiated proposals could be part of that, since the proposal is a way of saying: I will provide for you. In 38 percent of heterosexual marriages, the woman makes more than the man. Until we get used to that economic dynamic,

our ideas of romantic proposals might remain stuck in the past. In the meantime, we have celebrity proposals such as Pink’s and Jennifer Hudson’s to remind us that a woman need not wait for a man to get down on bended knee.
