El lunes en la mañana una de las victimas llamó desesperado a El Sol de Ohio pidiendo ayuda pues en la madrugada la policia había detenido a tres de sus compañeros, a pesar de que ellos habían llamado a la policía informando sobre la denuncia del asalto. “Se llevaron a mis tres compañeros detenidos porque según los policias las dos mujeres también llamaron reportando el caso, y lo peor es que

73-year-old in racketeering trial is Mexican Mafia’s Orange County boss, prosecutors say

Peter “Sana” Ojeda sat quietly, occasionally rubbing a hand over his wrinkled face, his cheeks drooping down and setting his mouth into a permanent frown. The 73year-old looked more like a none too happy grandpa than who he was accused of being: the reputed godfather of the Mexican
Mafia in Orange County. The gray-haired defendant studied the jury. The 12 men and women seemed to be staring anywhere in the courtroom but at Ojeda. Meanwhile, U.S. marshals in the Ronald Reagan Federal Courthouse in Santa Ana this week kept an eye on the alleged “Eme” kingpin during the early part of a trial that could last about a month.
Ojeda is being tried on charges of racketeering and committing violent crimes to support a racketeering conspiracy - charges that were first filed in 2011 against him and dozens of other alleged Mexican Mafia members in a 40-page indictment. The trial, which began Nov. 6, recalls films like “Blood In, Blood Out,” with its portrayal of the structure of a notorious
clandestine organization that wields power in the prison system as well as among Latino gangs. Rules of the Eme - Spanish for the letter m - include not being a “rat,” not showing cowardice and not raising a hand to another member without sanction, according to the testimony of prosecution expert witness John Castanedo, a special agent in the California Depart-
ment of Corrections and Rehabilitation. Even acknowledging the existence of the Mexican Mafia was grounds for punishment. “Your names will not be released at any point,” Judge James V. Selna assured the jury in response to an inquiry from one juror. Ojeda was one of 28 people initially charged in the federal indictment. The defendants allegedly operated a racketeering organization that distributed narcotics, taxed other gang members and protected and expanded the power of their criminal enterprise through intimidation, violence, threats of violence, assaults, murders and conspiracies to commit murder. Of the defendants initially charged, only two remain set for trial, Ojeda and Suzie Rodriguez. With the exception of two defendants who passed away, all of the other nonfugitive defendants have pleaded guilty, according to a prosecution trial brief.
In 2006, Ojeda was convicted on Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act charges. Later he was transferred out of Orange County to serve his sentence in the federal Bureau of Prisons, according to the indictment. Although he was in prison outside California, Ojeda maintained his leadership position, according to the indictment. In opening statements last week, prosecutors detailed Ojeda’s alleged involvement with the Mexican Mafia. “In the world of Southern California gangs, Orange County is Peter Ojeda’s county,” Assistant U.S. Atty. Joseph T. El primer ministro, quien en breve viajará para su primera reunión internacional del Grupo de los 20, pidió a su canciller “asegurar una relación cercana entre política de defensa, política internacional y seguridad nacional”. El nuevo gobierno espera “revitalizar la diplomacia canadiense y restablecer el liderazgo constructivo de Canadá en la esfera internacional”, sobre todo en el combate al cambio climático y el comercio de armas. Good Hispanics Bad Hispanics
Why Philosophy?
In Columbus, like any other place in the world, there are good people and bad people. There are good Hispanics and bad Hispanics. It is complicated and daring to say who is good and who is bad, but in the spirit of offering some exhortations, we will point out a few parameters: Who are the good Hispanics? • • • •
Those who fulfill their personal and family obligations Those who respect the laws of the state and the nation Those who do not harm others Those who work and struggle to build a better future
Who are the bad Hispanics? • Those who destroy their lives and their families’ in alcohol, drugs, prostitution, and other vices • Those who commit criminal acts or simple delinquency • Those who act without considering others • Those who waste time and the opportunities this country offers them Bad Hispanics are the vast minority; we would say that they are less than 10%. This Thanksgiving, El Sol de Ohio wants to give thanks for good Hispanics.
Hispanos Buenos Hispanos Malos En Columbus, como en cualquier lugar del mundo, hay gente buena y gente mala, hay hispanos buenos y hay hispanos malos. Es complicado y atrevido decir quién es bueno y quién es malo, pero con fines de ofrecer algunas exhortaciones señalaremos algunas pautas: ¿Quiénes son los Buenos?: • • • •
Los que cumplen con sus deberes personales y familiares Los que respetan las leyes del Estado y de la nación Los que no hacen daño a otros Los que trabajan y luchan por construir un mejor future.
¿Quiénes son los malos? • Los que destruyen su vida y la de su familia en alcohol, drogas, prostitución, y otros vicios • Los que comenten actos criminales o de simple delincuencia • Los que actúan sin importarles los demás • Los que pierden el tiempo y las oportunidades que este país les ofrece Los Hispanos malos son la inmensa minoría, nos atreveríamos a decir que menos del 10%. What passes as argument on most news media outlets hardly resembles the sort of dialogue that might help to increase awareness of our myriad contemporary challenges and their possible solutions. More often than not the growing fusion of politics and entertainment appears calculated to promote mindless affirmation of personal ideology at the expense of mutually beneficial conversation. So, Sean Hannity or Rachel Maddow, for example, are not in the business of cultivating the dispositions that will make them or their viewers more willing and more likely to engage others in constructive debate, debate that might result in someone believing that they have got “it” wrong. The result for the featured pundits and a growing segment of the American population, then, is a stubborn narrow-mindedness that obscures the fallibility of our beliefs and downplays the potential intellectual contributions of those with whom we interact. Whatever the socio-economic forces responsible for the abandonment of substantive dialogue, philosophy can play an important role in clarifying implicit assumptions embedded in
current practice while calling attention to the shallowness of ideas that are being peddled as substantive. To be more specific, philosophy may be able to help us see more fully the inadequacies of our current practices and may be able to help us construct a normative ideal which might help us go beyond them. Let us recall that in Plato’s Apology, Socrates voices one of the most profound statements in the Western historical/philosophical canon: “…for the unexamined life is not worth living for man…” The Athenian assembly, one of the hallmarks of the democratic, is caught upholding the frivolous above the substantial, the sophomoric above the profound, the status quo above justice and, ultimately, sophistry and rhetoric above philosophy. Keep in mind, Socrates poses his challenge to a hypothetical citizen of Athens by asking, “Good Sir, you are an Athenian, a citizen of the greatest city with the greatest reputation for wisdom and power; are you not ashamed of your eagerness to possess as much wealth, reputation, and honors as possible, while you do not care for or give thought to wisdom
or truth, or the best possible state of your soul?” Challenging those near him to think carefully about the importance of being self-critical by asking oneself the question “Who am I going to be?” “What type of person do I aspire to become?” “Am I hoping to become a troubadour for justice?” “Or, am I hoping to be that person who dies with the most toys?,” Socrates illustrates the profound importance of taking seriously the indispensability of self-examination when he suggests that there are things worse than death: “Neither I nor any other man should … contrive to avoid death at any cost. . . .It is not difficult to avoid death, gentlemen; it is much more difficult to avoid wickedness for it runs faster than death.” What is at stake, throughout our lives, is what sorts of persons we will be. And while I am not suggesting that the Socratic dictum, namely, “the unexamined life is not worth living,” is the be all and end all of education, I would argue that it is an essential and, perhaps, the fundamental element. In other words, it begins here.

El escritor mexicano Fernando del Paso gana el Premio Cervantes Fernando del Paso vive en la constelación de Andrómeda, como dice él. El Sol de Ohio Special Report
Y ayer tuvo un despertar que pasó del susto a la alegría en seis palabras. A las seis y media de la mañana, de México, lo sacó de la cama el teléfono. Vio que era una llamada de su hija Paulina. Su primera reacción fue de preocupación, pero cambió a medida que ella hablaba: — Papá, tienes que escribir otro discurso. — ¿Por qué? — Porque te dieron el Premio Cervantes—, le dijo su hija llorando de alegría. Desde su casa a las afueras de Guadalajara, en la urbanización de Andrómeda, y al lado de su esposa Socorro, Fernando del Paso (Ciudad de México, 1 de abril, de 1935), recuerda ese momento a EL PAÍS por la misma línea telefónica por donde recibió ese buen despertar:
— Es un reconocimiento enorme a todo ese esfuerzo que durante 60 años he hecho para escribir, me premian 60 años de esfuerzo y reconocen los principales libros de mi bibliografía. Al escuchar que México ha acaparado los últimos premios Cervantes latinoamericanos, al ser el suyo el cuarto en diez años, y el sexto en los 30 años del galardón (Octavio Paz, 1981, Carlos Fuentes,1987, Sergio Pitol, 2005, José Emilio Pacheco, 2009 y Elena Poniatowska, 2013) el escritor suelta una carcajada, y contesta: — ¡Magnífico! Lo único que siento es que no esté Carmen Balcells. Se refiere a la mítica agente literaria fallecida en septiembre pasado. Porque Fernando del Paso se convirtió ayer en XXX ganador del Premio Miguel de Cervantes “por su aportación al desarrollo de la novela aunando tradición y modernidad, como hizo Cervantes en su momento. Sus novelas llenas de riesgos recrean episodios fundamentales de la historia de México,
haciéndolos fundamentales”, según el acta del jurado. El premio, dotado con 125.000 euros, se entregará en un acto especial el 23 de abril de 2016, en la Universidad de Alcalá de Henares. En medio del barullo de fondo que hay en su casa, el escritor habla con cierta dificultad. Cuenta que se recupera de un ataque isquémico que hace dos años que le afectó el habla, el equilibrio y la coordinación. “Me ha tenido casi todo este tiempo en la cama leyendo solo los periódicos”. Él, que fue dibujante, diplomático, académico y en sus tiempos gran locutor de radio. Narrador, ensayista, poeta y dramaturgo, Fernando Del Paso forma parte de una gran generación de escritores latinoamericanos de la segunda mitad del siglo XX que corrió los linderos de la literatura en español. O como él mismo dice: “Soy parte de la cola del boom”. Es autor de novelas emblemáticas como José Trigo, Palinuro de Méxicoy Noticias del Imperio. Entre los ensayos figuran El coloquio de invierno, Yo soy hombre de letras y Viaje alrededor del Quijote. Reconoce que se siente influenciado por escritores como Joyce, Dos Passos, Faulkner, Sterne, Rabelais, Flaubert, Sófocles...
Y entre los latinoamericanos se declara “admirador de Jorge Luis Borges, Alejo Carpentier y García Márquez; amigo de Carlos Fuentes y conocido de Cortázar”. Gran conocedor de la historia pasada y presente de su país, Fernando del Paso ha estado muy atento a la actualidad: “México se ha vuelto un país peligroso y estamos consternados una enorme mayoría de personas. Además, me preocupa mucho la corrupción de mi país”. En el plano social y cotidiano, Del Paso cree que “todavía hay una discriminación racial y social. Es un fenómeno, y una lucha por el poder que el blanco siempre ha ganado. Es una situación que se estaba supernado, pero se ha acentuado en los últimos años”. En un artículo del año pasado ya dijo: “A los casi ochenta años de edad me da pena aprender los nombres de los pueblos mexicanos que nunca aprendí en la escuela y que hoy me sé solo cuando en ellos ocurre una tremenda injusticia; sólo cuando en ellos corre la sangre: Chenalhó, Ayotzinapa, Tlatlaya, Petaquillas...¡Qué pena, sí, qué vergüenza que sólo aprendamos su nombre cuando pasan a nuestra historia como pueblos bañados por la tragedia!”.
Sobre la literatura mexicana contemporánea, Fernando del Paso celebra que “se haya desinhibido, antes estaba encorsetada”. Lamenta que haya personas que “crean que el español no es nuestro idioma, y es todo lo contrario, es nuestro, y con mucha riqueza”. En cuanto a la cultura de su país, se queja: “Se ha debilitado un poco el impulso del Gobierno. Tenemos un presidente que es muy inculto y no parece tener buenos asesores culturales”. Recuerda con cariño la acogida que tiene su obra más prestigiosa:Noticias del Imperio. “Desde pequeño me llamó la atención la historia de Maximiliano de Habsburgo, emperador mexicano entre 1864 y 1867, y de su esposa, Carlota. Un emperador rubio que fusilamos y su mujer que se volvió loca”. Ese es el tema de la novela de casi mil páginas. Una de las más leídas en su país. El caso de Palinuro de México le causa más gracias. Ríe: “Es una novela picaresca basada en mis años juveniles. De cuando quería ser médico. Todos esos sueños están en la novela”. Lo que no pudo ser. En cambio el 23 de abril volverá a Alcalá de Henares a recoger el premio de lo que es, un Premio Cervantes. Fuente: El País.

The number of families illegally crossing the southern U.S. border has more than doubled over the same period last fall, prompting concern about a new surge of migrants from Central America. Many more unaccompanied children are also crossing, with 4,476 apprehended in September — an 85 percent increase over that month in 2014, according to new Border Patrol data. “If that trend even continues a little bit, if things start to go up in February as they usually do, we could be looking at things getting really high, and by spring, you’re seeing an emergency,” said Adam Isacson, a senior associate at the Washington Office on Latin America, a human rights advocacy group. Marsha Catron, a spokeswoman for the Department of Homeland Security, says the agency is “closely monitoring this situation,” though the increase “is not entirely inconsistent with historical trends for these months.” The concern among immigration officials and advocates is that the situation is building up to a repeat of the unprecedented influx on the southern border in 2014, when more than 68,000 unaccompanied children and as many families crossed illegally, mainly into Texas. Texas’ Rio Grande Valley has been the epicenter of both the earlier and the latest influx. In 2014, the region saw 77 percent more unaccompanied children and more than four times as many families caught crossing compared with the previous year. The number of families who crossed this September was 5,273, more than twice the number seen in September 2014. One likely factor in the rising numbers is the increasing success rate of smugglers who, after crackdowns in Mexico and the U.S. last year, appear to have arranged alternative smuggling routes and payoff relationships with Mexican officials, border analysts say.
A bigger component is thought to be a recent explosion of violence in El Salvador, which has long been plagued by gang warfare. Last year a two-year truce dissolved between the two largest gangs: 18th Street and Mara Salvatrucha, also known as MS-13, both of which originated in Los Angeles. That drove homicides above even previously troubling levels. During the first 10 months of this year, El Salvador reported nearly 5,500 homicides, according to a congressional report last month. That’s more than any other country not at war, according to Elizabeth Kennedy, a San Diego State University social scientist who has worked with migrants. By the end of this year, the homicide rate in El Salvador — a country of 6.5 million people — may exceed 90 per 100,000, a level of violence, including massacres and killings of

Kennedy said conditions also remain poor in Guatemala and Honduras — two other originators of illegal migration to the U.S. — but El Salvador is worse. “El Salvador is hemorrhaging people,” Isacson said. The number of unaccompanied children from El Salvador apprehended at the border more than doubled to 1,433 this September compared with last year. The one-month peak in the child and family migration surge came in June 2014, when 16,330 families and 10,620 unaccompanied children crossed into the U.S. State and federal authorities cracked down the
following month, sending in National Guard troops and opening massive family detention centers. By September of 2014, the number apprehended at the border plummeted: Families dropped to 2,301 that month; children to 2,426. As the numbers dipped, Sister Norma Pimentel considered closing a humanitarian center operated by Sacred Heart Catholic Church in the most heavily affected town, McAllen, last winter. Then the number of migrants started to climb again this spring, with nearly 800 staying overnight in July — three times as many as at the peak of last year’s summer surge. Instead of closing, Pimentel decided to expand. Last year’s surge of illegal immigration was driven,
in part, by rumors that migrant families would be granted permission to remain in the U.S. legally. Many immigrants eagerly surrendered to authorities at the border, thinking it was a step toward residency. U.S. officials launched a public information campaign across Central America to make it clear there was no such program. Yet hundreds of immigrant families caught crossing between July and September this year told immigration officials they believed they would be permitted to stay and collect public benefits, according to records released last month to the House Judiciary Committee. But Catron says those are not the only reasons migrants are coming. “One internal report that summarizes results of interviews, where migrants are explicitly questioned about pull factors, is not intended to be a compre-
hensive analysis of the situation,” she said. “Both pull and push factors contribute to migration and apprehension levels. As we have consistently acknowledged, poverty and violence in Central America continue to exist as push factors.” On one recent day, Sacred Heart saw a hundred migrants arrive seeking help. “The reason they are coming is how things are at home,” Pimentel said. She noted that the increased apprehensions of families and unaccompanied children come at a time when Mexico is apprehending even more migrants than is the U.S. “We’re seeing more and more indications that this is a refugee crisis, and it needs to be treated as such,” said Kennedy, who interviewed immigrant women, mostly mothers, for a new United Nations report released last month that documented a thirteenfold increase in asylum seekers within Mexico and Central America since 2008, and a nearly fivefold jump in the U.S. “The violence being perpetrated by organized, transnational criminal groups in El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and certain parts of Mexico has become pervasive,” U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres said recently, likening the situation in Central America to the Syrian refugee crisis. The recent uptick in illegal immigration into the U.S. belies a larger trend. The total number of immigrants crossing the southern border has actually decreased for decades, and for the fiscal year that just ended, it may fall below 300,000 for the first time since 1971. Catron noted that the number of apprehensions on the southern border had reached a historic low, including 42 percent fewer families and unaccompanied children caught compared with the previous fiscal year. In one indication that smugglers may be playing a role in the September spike, 410 families and unaccompanied children were caught crossing into the remote Big Bend area in western Texas, compared with 23 last year. There were 475 in a rural stretch of desert near Yuma, Ariz., compared with 72 last year. “The fact that more remote sectors are seeing increases may mean they’re turning to areas where they don’t need to deal with Border Patrol,” Isacson said.

Si se modifican esos factores se puede reducir 44 por ciento la mortalidad por un infarto, dijo el cardiólogo del Centro Médico Nacional La Raza, David Flores Anguiano, quien agregó que las personas que abandonan el tabaquismo disminuyen 36 por ciento el riesgo de un infarto. No obstante, se estima que para 2030 morirán 26 millones de personas en el mundo por eventos cardiovasculares, alertó el médico en una conferencia de prensa. En 2014, se registraron 17.5 millones de defunciones por eventos cardiovasculares, cifra que casi duplica a los 8.2 millones de muertes ocasionadas por el cáncer. Las enfermedades cardiovasculares causaron en México 77 mil 284 muertes por infarto y las cerebrovasculares, 31 mil 997 fallecimientos en 2013, de acuerdo con el Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Geografía (INEGI). Entre los factores que predisponen a un infarto, Flores Anguiano destacó el síndrome metabólico, el cual está presente en hasta 35 por ciento de la población mexicana.
Los malos hábitos alimenticios, el tabaquismo, la diabetes, la obesidad, la ateroesclerosis y el sedentarismo, son factores que elevan el riesgo de sufrir un infarto a partir de los 35 años, por lo que ocho de cada 10 infartos pueden ser prevenibles.
El síndrome metabólico consiste en tener un colesterol bueno (HDL) menor de 50 miligramos en mujeres o inferior de 40 miligramos en hombres, padecer hipertensión arterial, sufrir diabetes mellitus o intolerancia a la glucosa. “El paciente diabético, tan sólo por el hecho de serlo, equivale a que tenga un envejecimiento de 15 años más de los que tiene y esto lo lleva a tener
de dos a ocho veces más probabilidades de tener un evento cerebrovascular”, indicó el médico. También, apuntó, el riesgo está presente en los pacientes a los que la cintura les mide más de 80 centímetros en el caso de las mujeres, y 90 centímetros en la de los hombres. “Estas características son comunes en la población mexicana y es un riesgo para sufrir un evento cere-
brovascular”, por lo que el especialista comentó que es importante modificar los hábitos alimenticios que conlleven a una dieta balanceada y dejar de ingerir sal en exceso y tener niveles bajos de grasa en la sangre Además, ayuda a tener un apego al tratamiento médico y un control de la hipertensión arterial y de la diabetes; consultar al médico de manera pe-
riódica hacer ejercicio y sobre todo, dejar de fumar y beber alcohol con moderación. Si alguien tiene factores de riesgo genéticos de diabetes y sobrepeso o algún otro factor de riesgo, al “reducir cinco por ciento su peso corporal, obtener menos del 30 por ciento de la energía calórica de la grasa e incorporar fibra en 15 gramos y hacer ejercicio por más de me-
dia hora, puede reducir su riesgo cardiovascular y de aparición de diabetes hasta en un 58 por ciento”, apuntó. El jefe de la clínica de marcapasos del Hospital de Tacuba del Instituto de Seguridad y Servicios Sociales de los Trabajadores del Estado (ISSSTE), Carlos Alfredo Narváez Oriani, explicó que el infarto al miocardio se produce cuando se interrumpe el flujo sanguíneo en una de las arterias del corazón porque se forma un trombo o coágulo. “La mayoría de las personas que sufren un infarto mueren durante las tres horas después de este”, aseguró el médico. Narváez Oriani resaltó la importancia de la atención médica inmediata no sólo para evitar la muerte, sino también para reducir los daños en el músculo cardiaco, los cuales llevarán a una mala calidad de vida. Entre los principales síntomas del infarto están el dolor o sensación de opresión en el pecho, el cual irradia a la mandíbula, al brazo izquierdo o a la boca del estómago; falta de aire, angustia y sudor frío, precisó el doctor durante la presentación la campaña “Vivir a lo grande”.

Mientras la humanidad carnívora se tiraba de los pelos con la noticia de la OMS de que los embutidos causan cáncer, Isabela Giordano Gil Moreira publicaba esto en su página en Facebook: “Una cosa es un beicon artesanal, rico en vitamina
D y antioxidantes, ahumado lentamente. Otra cosa es un beicon de cerdo que come pienso, pasa por el proceso industrial con nitratos y nitritos añadidos, humo líquido y glutamato monosódico. Y, sin importar la fuente, la moderación y el autoconocimiento son claves para tener buena salud. !!!Comida de verdad, siempre!!!” Después de esta publicación, la primera pregunta de esta entrevista, realiza-
da por teléfono, no podía ser otra. - ¿Usted come bacon? - “No me gusta el bacon. No soy una persona a la que le guste el bacon. Nunca ha formado parte de mi dieta”, afirma categóricamente. Ni siquiera el artesanal mencionado por ella entra en el menú de la chef. Bela Gil tiene solo 27 años, pero ya cuenta con un programa de televisión con su nombre, un progra-

Por predicar una alimentación saludable y proponer recetas en las que los ingredientes se pueden sustituir por otros, que no siempre parece que puedan ofrecer mucho en términos de sabor —como lapicanha (un corte de carne bovina) del churrasco por sandía a la plancha, o el brigadeiro convencional por uno hecho de arrurruz, por ejemplo, independientemente de qué rayos sea el arrurruz— Bela Gil se ha convertido en inspiración de memes que circulan por internet. Muchos, con carácter político. Uno de los más famosos fue: “Puedes reemplazar a Alckmin [gobernador del estado de São Paulo] por ñame”. Pero, en el área económica, ella tiene

Prof Gringras added: “It’s not good enough to say do less and accept this is the world we live in, they’re fun devices but we do need some protection on what they do at night-time.”

Smartphones, tablets and e-readers should have an automatic “bedtime mode” that stops them disrupting people’s sleep, says a leading doctor. Prof Paul Gringras argued the setting should filter out the blue light that delays the body clock and keeps people awake later into the evening. The doctor, from Evelina Children’s Hospital in London, said every new model was “bluer and brighter”. He said manufacturers needed to show more “responsibility”. As it gets darker in the evening, the body starts to produce the sleep hormone melatonin - which helps people nod off.
Certain wavelengths of light, those at the bluegreen end of the spectrum, can disrupt the system. Prof Gringras was part of a study, published in
Frontiers in Public Health, analysing the light emitted by devices. It concluded there was a clear trend for new devices to be bigger, brighter,
have higher levels of contrast and emit more blue light. The professor of children’s sleep medicine told the BBC News website: “That

An increasingly warped sense of humour could be an early warning sign of impending dementia. The University College London study involved patients with frontotemporal dementia, with the results appearing in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease. Questionnaires from the friends and family of the 48 patients revealed many had noticed a change in humour years before the dementia had been diagnosed. This included laughing inappropriately at tragic events. Experts say more studies are now needed to understand how and when changes in humour could act as a red flag for dementia. There are many different types of dementia and frontotemporal dementia is one of the rarer ones. The area of the brain it affects is involved with
personality and behaviour, and people who develop this form of dementia can lose their inhibition, become more impulsive and struggle with social situations. Dr Camilla Clark and colleagues recruited 48 patients from their dementia clinic at University College London. And they asked the friends
or relatives of the patients to rate their loved one’s liking for different kinds of comedy - slapstick comedy such as Mr Bean, satirical comedy such as Yes, Minister or absurdist comedy such as Monty Python - as well as any examples of inappropriate humour. Nearly all of the respondents said, with hindsig-
ht, that they had noticed a shift in the nine years before the dementia had been diagnosed. Many of the patients had developed a dark sense of humour - for example, laughing at tragic events in the news or in their personal lives. The dementia patients also tended to prefer slapstick to satirical humour, when compared
with 21 healthy people of a similar age. Dr Clark said: “These were marked changes completely inappropriate humour well beyond the realms of even distasteful humour. For example, one man laughed when his wife badly scalded herself.” Lee Pearce, from Sheffield, was not involved in the study, but he can relate to the findings. He first noticed a change in his mum’s behaviour when she was 55, but it took four years before she received the correct diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia. “She’d always been very loving and family-focused but became increasingly uninvolved and emotionless,” he says. “As she had a history of depression, we put it down to that, and her doctor agreed. “Mum’s behaviour became more and more erratic, and we began to question the diagnosis.
“She’d forget family birthdays, laugh if someone had an accident or she heard someone was unwell and was even sacked from her job - all completely out of character.” Dr Simon Ridley, of Alzheimer’s Research UK, said anyone concerned about changes in their behaviour should speak to their GP. “While memory loss is often the first thing that springs to mind when we hear the word dementia, this study highlights the importance of looking at the myriad different symptoms that impact on daily life and relationships,” he said. “A deeper understanding of the full range of dementia symptoms will increase our ability to make a timely and accurate diagnosis.” Credit: BBC News.

Es una afirmación rigurosamente cierta y que deja al margen las fanfarronadas en las ruedas de prensa: los jugadores profesionales no se cuidan las encías y las muelas como lo hacen con sus rodillas y tobillos. Es la conclusión que va cristalizando a partir de los primeros estudios que ya se han publicado sobre la pobre salud bucodental de las estrellas del balompié en Brasil, España y el Reino Unido. Descuidan la boca y eso tiene reflejo en el terreno de juego. Ocho equipos de fútbol profesional de Inglaterra y Gales (con el Manchester United entre ellos) se han prestado a que un grupo de dentistas estudiara sus bocas para conocer su estado y el resultado es llamativo: una mayoría aplastante de los jugadores tiene problemas serios en las encías (77% con gingivitis, 80% con periodontitis irreversible), casi cuatro de cada diez sufría caries activa en el momento del examen y más de la mitad una erosión dental. Un panorama que sorprende, tratándose de deportistas de élite para los que la salud debería ser lo primero, en todo su
espectro. Pero se trata de un abandono que llama más todavía la atención cuando los propios futbolistas reconocen que afec-
ta no solo a su vida, sino incluso al desempeño de su profesión. Así, el 45% de los 187 jugadores estudiados ase-
gura encontrarse molesto con su salud bucal, el 20% reconoce que el estado de su boca tiene un impacto negativo en su calidad de vida y el 7% admitió que les perjudica a la hora de entrenar o jugar al fútbol. Esto es lo que le dijeron al equipo de dentistas de la University College de Londres (UCL) que trabajó con ellos para realizar este estudio que publica una revista de referencia en medicina deportiva British Journal of Sports Medicine. Las conclusiones de este trabajo coinciden con otros estudios previos,como el que se publicó en 2011 sobre la plantilla del FC Barcelona, y que sirvió de primer gran aviso de la mala salud dental de los futbolistas de élite. Los Ronaldinho, Iniesta, Puyol y Chygrynskyi —el que peor estaba— tenían la boca tan mal como los jugadores del Manchester ahora, con una media de más de dos caries activas por jugador, lo que demuestra que nada parece haber cambiado en estos años, sobre todo en el uso de bebidas deportivas nocivas para las piezas dentales. Leading Catholic bishops met with President Barack Obama at the White House on Friday and had a discussed a number of issues including religious liberty, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops confirmed. “The bishops are grateful for this opportunity for candid, cordial dialogue with the President and Vice President of the United States,” the conference said in a written statement after the meeting. The conversation “continued the good will evident during the visit of Pope Francis,” the statement added. Archbishop Joseph Kurtz of Louisville, the president of the U.S. Bishops’ Conference; and Cardinal Donald Wuerl of Washington, D.C. attended the meeting in the Oval Office, joined by Monsignor Ronny Jenkins, the general secretary of the conference. They met with President Obama and Vice President Joe Biden.
Among the issues discussed were religious liberty, the refugee crisis in Syria and the Middle East, religious persecution, immigration reform, and prison reform, the U.S. bishops’ conference said. The White House confir-
med that the meeting was held “to follow up on Pope Francis’ visit to the White House earlier this fall.” Press secretary Josh Earnest noted in the White House daily press briefing that “it was the president’s intent” to talk about “the
wide range of areas where there is common ground” with the “priorities” of both parties. “Those priorities include things like climate change, immigration reform, certainly our diplomatic efforts in Iran and Cuba,”
Earnest noted. “Broader issues related to social justice are priorities of the Catholic Church and are priorities shared by the administration.” The meeting came just days after the Supreme Court decided to hear
multiple challenges to the administration’s contraception mandate, including one by the Archdiocese of Washington and an appeal by the Little Sisters of the Poor. Pope Francis visited the White House and met with President Obama on Sept. 23 during his visit to the U.S. In an address to the president and a crowd of 20,000 on the White House lawn, he insisted that religious freedom “remains one of America’s most precious possessions.” He also stressed the “urgency” of responding to climate change and recognized the administration’s effort to fight air pollution. He also made an unscheduled visit of support to the Little Sisters of the Poor home in Washington, D.C. later that day at their Jeanne Jugan Residence. “This is a sign, obviously, of support for them” in their court case, the director of the Holy See Press Office Fr. de Puerto Rico” pero “la Iglesia quiso que se quedara un grupo de religiosas. A las últimas nos tocó quedarnos”, relató Sor Ana a ACI Prensa. Sin embargo, permanecer no era sencillo, pues el gobierno había expropiado los colegios y prohibido las catequesis fuera de los templos. Además, “a los niños los humillaban en
la escuela porque iban a la iglesia”. La presión sobre los menores era más fuerte en los pueblos, pues se daban casos donde los profesores se paraban en las puertas de las iglesias para ver qué alumnos iban a Misa, añadió Sor Mercedes Martínez (54), la primera vocación cubana de esta congregación luego de la
revolución. Mientras Fidel Castro se afianzaba en el poder, las 14 religiosas que se quedaron siguieron trabajando. “Hicimos la vida normal, trabajo de asistencia por la noche, los enfermos. Teníamos muchos enfermos, siempre salíamos todas las que podíamos velar y hacíamos nuestra vida, nuestra misión independiente: la vida de comunidad en nuestro convento, nuestra casa, la vida de asistencia y salíamos mucho a la calle”. “La gente se nos quedaba muchas veces mirándonos. Nos insultaban, por supuesto (porque eran religiosas). Decían ‘¡al campo, al campo! (…) ¡todos a trabajar al campo!’. Era lo que mandaba Fidel”, recordó la anciana religiosa.
En este ambiente, las hermanas siguieron luchando por mantener el catolicismo. “Se trabajaba en las iglesias, se invitaba a la gente a que fuera a las iglesias”, se hacía apostolado personal, relató Sor Ana. En ese sentido, Sor Mercedes afirmó que fue este trabajo misionero lo que ayudó a mantener la fe en la isla. “Con el testimonio de la vida de ellas, de noche tras noche junto a un enfermo, era lo más elocuente que ellas hacían, de servicio, de caridad”. Police say video shows suspect in slaying of pastor’s wife Special Report
not long after the suspect apparently burglarized a house two doors away. At least three security cameras posted on other homes captured images of the man walking in the normally quiet neighborhood on the city’s northwest side near the Indianapolis Museum of Art. “We believe that when Mr. Blackburn left to go work out, he saw the opportunity to burglarize another home,” Maj. Eric Hench said. He said police were working to enhance the video and that police planned
to release images of the suspect in the hope that someone might recognize the individual. A neighbor heard possible gunshots about 6:45 a.m. and home video shows a dark SUV speeding from the neighborhood, Hench said. He said the suspect was seen walking in the neighborhood and that it is not clear if the SUV is connected to the shooting. Hombre se desmaya cuando intentaba robar el diezmo de una iglesia ecientemente la policía del municipio de Presidente Médici (Estado de Rondônia) actuó inmediatamente tras un intento de robo en una residencia. Al llegar local, la policía encontró a un hombre de 27 años desmayado. Al parecer, el hombre trató de robarse una caja con 2,646 dólares. Este era el diezmo de una iglesia pero cuando intentó llevárselo, se desmayó. Él y un cómplice al cual no atraparon, entraron a la residencia por encima del muro, para tener acceso al patio, ambos retiraron dos tablas de la pared y así lograron entrar a la casa. El movimiento de los delincuentes llamó la atención de los vecinos y de inmediato llamaron a la policía. Cuando la policía llegó entró por la zona exterior de la casa donde encontraron una gorra y ropa masculina. Los ladrones ya habían extraído un televi-
sor de 32 pulgadas y un tanque de gas. El hombre desmayado estaba en una habitación, él se derrumbó abrazando una caja que estaba debajo de una cama y en ella estaba el diezmo de la congregación. La policía trató de despertar al hombre, pero el sospechoso no mostró reacción por lo que llamaron a una ambulancia del Hospital Municipal de Presidente Médici para que lo trasladaran. Tras darle atención médica, se descubrió que el ladrón al parecer se trata de un adicto a las drogas. Vale destacar que en la casa no había nadie porque los residentes habían viajado al Estado de Acre. La caja con el dinero en efectivo fue confirmada por los propietarios quienes afirmaron que son los diezmos de la iglesia donde asisten.

El Sol de Ohio Home video surveillance cameras caught images of the man who investigators believe broke into an Indianapolis home and fatally shot a pastor’s pregnant wife, police said. City police Capt. Craig Converse said during a news conference that detectives haven’t identified the hoodie-wearing suspect in 28-year-old Amanda Blackburn’s death. He said the suspect is black and is between 5-foot-6 and 5-foot-9 tall. “We know who killed her,” Converse said. “At least we have a picture of him, but we don’t know the name.” Blackburn was shot in the head during the attack Tuesday morning and died the next day Investigators believe the man in the video might have seen Blackburn’s husband, Davey, leave home about 6:10 a.m. Tuesday to go to a gym

Un pastor de Indiana aún mantiene su fe en Dios después de que su esposa embarazada fue asesinada a tiros en su casa por intrusos la mañana del miércoles (11 de noviembre). Christian Today informa que Amanda Grace Blackburn tenía 12 semanas de embarazo, este era el segundo hijo de la pareja. Su esposo, el pastor Davey Blackburn de la Iglesia Resonate en Indianápolis, dijo que está profundamente herido, pero cree en el bien para salir de la devastación. El pastor Blackburn estaba en el gimnasio cuando los intrusos entraron en la casa de la familia. Cuando regresó a las 8:30 de la mañana, se encontró a su esposa con una herida en la cabeza. Guerrilla colombiana presenta condiciones para pasar a grupo político
La guerrilla de las Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (FARC) dio a conocer algunas de las condiciones necesarias para su transformación en movimiento político tras lograr un acuerdo de paz con el gobierno de Juan Manuel Santos. En un comunicado dado a conocer en La Habana, sede de los diálogos de paz, las FARC presentaron esas condiciones como parte de las “Diez propuestas mínimas para garantizar el fin del conflicto, la reconciliación nacional y la construcción de la paz estable y duradera”. Las iniciativas corresponden al punto sobre “Condiciones para la transformación de las FARC en un movimiento político abierto”. El primer punto demanda proveer los diseños institucionales, constitucionales y legales que posibiliten su participación inmediata en el Poder Legislativo mediante la asignación directa de curules al Congreso y otras instancias de representación popular. Indicó que se debe garantizar que el movimiento político en el que se transformen las FARC adquiera en forma inmediata e indefinida su personería jurídica, así como un asiento en el Consejo Nacional Electoral. Asimismo, demanda la conformación de la “Comisión especial de seguimiento a la participación política”, la cual estará integrada por representantes del Estado y de las FARC en igualdad de condiciones. El grupo yihadista Estado Islámico (EI) amenazó en un nuevo video con atacar a Estados Unidos y otros países que participan en los ataques aéreos en Siria, al advertir que sufrirán la misma suerte que Francia. El video, publicado en un sitio utilizado por el EI para difundir sus mensajes, comienza con imágenes de noticias sobre los atentados del viernes pasado en París, que han dejado 129 muertos y unos 352 heridos, para después dar paso a las advertencias de varios yihadistas. “Les decimos a los países que participan en la campaña cruzada que, por Alá, tendrán un día, si Dios quiere, como el de Francia y por Alá, igual que golpeamos Francia en el centro de París, entonces juramos que golpearemos a Estados Unidos en su centro en Washington”, advirtió el EI. El grupo yihadista precisó que atacará a Estados Unidos, Australia, Canadá y Bélgica, entre otros países, “si persisten los bom-
bardeos contra los hermanos musulmanes”. La advertencia fue lanzada por un hombre vestido con uniforme y un turbante, quien se identificó en los subtítulos como Al Ghareeb argelino, a través de un video, cuya autenticidad no ha sido posible verificar de forma inmediata. Otro combatiente del EI sentenció “les digo a los países de la coalición (liderada por Estados Unidos) que no vivirán seguros hasta que los musulmanes vivan seguros en sus países”. Otro de los yihadistas,
armado con un rifle kalashnikov, sugirió que los ataques pueden ser realizados “con artefactos explosivos, disparos, cuchillos, coches bomba, piedras”. El yihadista Estado Islámico, que reivindicó la ola de atentados en París, los peores en suelo francés desde la Segunda Guerra Mundial, ya había amenazado en el pasado con atentar contra Estados Unidos y otros de sus aliados. Rusia bloqueó el acceso a más de 800 páginas web y retiró cuatro mil 500 documentos por tener contenido vinculado con actividades terroristas, ante el aumento de personas que se enrolan en las filas del Estado Islámico (EI), anunció la Fiscalía. La medida fue tomada en respuesta a la orden de la Fiscalía General de la Federación rusa, a la que el gobierno ha dotado de capacidad para perseguir la propaganda terrorista en Internet. 1,004 victims of child sexual exploitation identified, rescued by ICE in 2015 El Sol de Ohio Special Report
More than 1,000 victims of child sexual abuse and online exploitation were identified or rescued in fiscal year 2015, as part of child exploitation investigations conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). HSI special agents arrested or assisted in the arrest of 2,394 child predators worldwide in 2015, in child exploitation investigations ranging from possession, production and distribution of online child pornography to child enticement and child sex tourism. In one of the first cases of the fiscal year, a 41-yearold California man, Blake Robert Johnston, was charged federally after his arrest by the Martinez (California) Police Department for transporting a 14-year-old girl from Oregon to northern California to engage in sex. According to court documents, Johnston allegedly met this girl, and several other minor victims, in
online chatrooms, groomed them online, and then sexually abused them in order to produce child pornography. More than 60 child victims who were allegedly sexually abused or exploited by Johnston have been identified in 27 states and five countries. Additionally, through this investigation, HSI identified a number of additional child predators who allegedly communicated
with Johnston and traded images of child sexual exploitation material. While new technologies have exponentially increased the volume of child exploitation material being traded and produced, they are also giving investigators the tools to identify more victims, and to intervene faster than ever, according to officials at the ICE Cyber Crimes Center.
In 2015, HSI analyzed more than 7.5 petabytes – or 7,500 terabytes – of data seized during search warrants; this equals 127.5 million hours of music; 150 million file cabinets filled with documents; more than a trillion pages of text; or almost 100 years of high definition video. More than half of that data was related to child exploitation investigations. And,
every year, HSI forensic analysts see about 40 percent more data collected from search warrants than the previous year. This staggering amount of data means that finding victims in need of rescue can be like finding a needle in a haystack. HSI special agents address this issue by using the latest technology available to help process that data, and by focusing on victim identification. Four years ago, in 2011, ICE’s Cyber Crimes Center launched a victim identification program to improve efforts to find and safeguard victims of child pornography. Since then, ICE has expanded this capability across the agency. In 2015, the center expanded the footprint and capabilities of its forensic and victim identification laboratories and conducted victim identification training with special agents and analysts across all of its domestic field offices. HSI also currently participates in a major collaborative effort known as Project VIC, which is
helping to create technology solutions that reduce the amount of time to forensically process data, allowing special agents to concentrate their efforts on newly identified victims and reduce the time spent viewing previously discovered explicit material. Seized data is now being analyzed in weeks, as opposed to six to nine months. “Project VIC promotes a victim-focused methodology, speeds the identification of child victims and reduces officer burnout,” said Maura Harty, president and CEO of the International Centre for Missing and Exploited Children, the program coordinator for Project VIC. “Project VIC is very much a public-private partnership, with numerous law enforcement and other governmental entities, as well as private businesses combining forces to achieve our shared goals - there simply is no better way to help children.” Credit: ICE.

Black Americans are more than twice as likely as white people to have nonfatal force or the threat of it used against them during encounters with the police, according to a study by the US Department of Justice. An analysis of tens of millions of face-to-face contacts between police and civilians over a decade found black people faced the use of force more often than white people in both street and traffic stops, despite being less likely to have encounters with officers overall. The report follows months of protests around the US over the treatment of African Americans by law enforcement. An ongoing Guardian investigation has found black people are being killed by police at twice the rate of white people, and that those black people killed were twice as likely to have been unarmed.
Government researchers looking at the use of nonfatal force found that 3.5% of black people who had contact with police reported that during their most recent encounter officers either shouted, cursed or made threats; pushed, grabbed, hit or kick them; used pepper spray or a Taser; or pointed a gun or
used some other form of force. By comparison, 1.4% of white people and 2.1% of Hispanic people who encountered police reported a similar experience to the police-public contact survey (PPCS) by the Justice Department’s bureau of justice statistics. While a majority of people
across all races who had encounters involving the use or threat of force reported that the police’s actions were excessive and inappropriate, black people were the most likely to say this. People who were hit, kicked or had a gun pointed at them were most likely to make such complaints overall.
“Survey respondents defined what they considered to be the threat or use of force and whether it was excessive according to their perceptions of police behavior,” wrote the report’s authors. “Use of force and excessive were not defined for respondents.” The report found that white people actually had a higher rate of contact with the police overall than people of ethnic minorities. In an average year, 20% of white Americans – almost 33 million – had a face-to-face encounter with police, compared with 17% of black people (almost 5 million) and 16% of Hispanic respondents, which equates to 4.4 million. The researchers published their annual average statistics based on surveys that were conducted in 2002, 2005, 2008 and 2011. They said the rates and patterns they found did not change significantly over the years. Their study covered encounters
such as stops and apprehensions by officers but also those in which police responded to a report of a crime or a request for help. The study found that the vast majority of an average 44m yearly contacts between the police and civilians did not involve the use or threat of force, and that about 715,000 per year, or 1.6% of the total, did. Street stops, as part of criminal investigations or of people suspected of wrongdoing, were several times more likely than traffic stops or other contacts with police to descend into a use-of-force situation, according to the survey. Street encounters between police officers and black people were also twice as likely as those with white people to involve the threat or use of force. US adds foreign students, but few Americans study abroad El Sol de Ohio Special Report
Meanwhile, the number of Americans studying abroad grew by only 5 percent, falling short of expectations. The findings were released Monday from an annual study by the nonprofit Institute of International Education and the U.S. Department of State. Of almost 1 million students that came to the U.S. in the 2014-15 school year, about a third came from China, the most from any country. But much of last year’s growth is credited to a surge in the number of students who came from India, drawn by strong research programs, experts say. In all, the number of Indian students in the U.S. grew by 30 percent to more than 130,000, the biggest jump since the nonprofit started collecting data in 1954. “That increase has been primarily at the graduate level, and we know that Indian students have always been very attracted to the availability of excellent science and research facilities on U.S. campuses,” said Rajika Bhandari, the nonprofit’s deputy vice president for research and evaluation. Numbers coming from Brazil spiked, too, from 13,000 to 23,000, but Brazilians still made up only 2 percent of international students in the U.S. For the second consecutive year, New York University hosted the largest number of international students,

At the University of Southern California, the number of Indian students has gone from 1,300 to more than 2,000 since 2012. At other schools like Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, populations of Indian students have increased over time but held steady in recent years.
The Institute of International Education reported that international students contributed $30 billion to the U.S. economy last year. The U.S. remains the top destination for international students, but relatively few Americans study abroad. About 300,000 U.S. students left the country to study in the 2013-14 school year, the most recent year for which figures for Americans are available, a number that has risen steadily but still accounts for less than 2 percent of all U.S. undergraduate students.

“This rate of growth is not good enough,” Bhandari said. “We really do need to double or even triple this rate of growth.” To boost those numbers, the U.S. Department of State said it’s opening a new study abroad office offering information on programs and scholarships. “We are going to be working very actively on outreach to explain the benefits of study abroad and encourage more Americans to participate,” said Marianne Craven, the acting deputy assistant secretary of state for acade-
mic programs. The office plans to launch its website this week, Craven said. In particular, the office hopes to help more lowincome and minority students. About 75 percent of U.S. students who studied abroad last year were white, a number that has decreased only slightly over the past decade. Black students made up 6 percent of students who studied abroad last year. Top destinations for U.S. students are the United Kingdom, Italy and Spain. European countries drew half of all U.S. students who studied abroad.
Colleges, too, have been pushing students to study abroad for years, citing the benefits of cultural exchange. Dozens have signed on to a national campaign encouraging all students to get passports. Universities have also ramped up efforts to recruit international students, especially in growing regions. “They know that attracting international students to their campuses makes for a better student body,” Craven said. Home sellers in the United States overall have about $40,000 in equity in their property, a median 23% gain from their time of purchase. But one slice of those sellers is faring much worse than everyone else, according to new data from the National Association of Realtors. Those who bought their homes 8 to 10 years ago — 2005 to 2007, at the height of the real estate bubble — have gained almost no equity in that time, an average of just $3,000 or 1%, said Jessica Lautz, the NAR’s managing director of survey research and communication.
That group of homeowners may be reluctant to put houses on the market today, even though they are right at the average tenure of sellers who make a house trade, and that may be adding to existinghome inventory shortages in many cities, Lautz said at the NAR’s annual convention here. Despite the equity gains for most homeowners, it is taking more and more income these days to purchase a home. The NAR’s profile of home buyers and sellers for 2015 shows that the gross household income of all purchasers was $86,100, a figure that has risen every year since 2012 when it was $78,600.
