Overview
Overview Welcome to the 2018 ELTHAM College Arts Season. We are proud to present to you our year of shows, showcases and special presentations. ELTHAM College is all about growing hearts and minds. We believe the arts have a unique place in the College community, unleashing imaginative possibilities and fostering creative ideas and practices, while engaging with every young person who wishes to delve into the arts. Great art speaks directly to your soul, and we have an enormous assortment of opportunities for the College community to embrace. Our arts program encourages respectful collaboration across art disciplines and year levels. Our students engage with the creative process and take on leadership roles as we present and develop our work. Every member of the community has the opportunity to be involved in the 2018 season, and we will be encouraging all of our parents, students, and staff to extend themselves by trying something new this year. That may be singing in the choir, editing a short film, or attending a gallery exhibition. This booklet is a celebration of the diverse range of artistic opportunities offered to the College community and it details the varied ways our young people will be expressing themselves through contemporary arts practice; be that through music, dance, sculpture, spoken word, theatrical design, or any other form of creative expression. Each of the events listed in the following pages will be the result of many hours of precision practice. We believe strongly in the power of art to create positive change, both within and outside of ourselves. Albert Einstein once said, “Not everything that counts can be counted. This wisdom is aptly applied to artistic pursuit where the process is just as important as the outcome, and much can be gained by experiencing the dedication, growth and resilience needed to produce a great piece of art. Art needs to be experienced, heard, felt and lived. We look forward to seeing you at our events throughout the year. Nicholas Waxman, Head of Visual and Performing Arts and Nicole Howard, Visual and Performing Arts Coordinator

Years 5–8 Production The Worm The Worm is a musical comedy inspired by the unbelievable true story of the strange events that occur at a school in Melbourne. Here the details are taken to the extreme as the students, staff and community of the fictional Beacon College become a worldwide sensation. The actions of just one young person become such a powerful image that it threatens civil society and becomes a hot button political issue. This brand new comic musical is full of sensational songs and laugh-out-loud moments. Following up on the acclaimed production of Wild Swans, this is sure to be a hit.

We believe this helps expose young people to the risks of presenting in public and is designed not just to grow their skills, but to grow their confidence. Finalists from each year level are then chosen to compete at an evening event, with the ultimate winner awarded the Carson Trophy.

Student Leaders A Word From the Senior School Captains In the upcoming year, we are all very thrilled to be a part of the ever-growing Arts family at ELTHAM College. Filled with a number of huge events such as: the Years 9–12 Musical Footloose the Musical, ELTHAM on Film and the Senior School Art and Design Exhibitions, the next 12 months are completely packed with fantastic opportunities for all students, teachers and parents. We are looking forward to seeing the continued growth in the community, created through an everincreasing network of student, artists and respective families. We hope to see even more people putting themselves out there as well, stepping a little outside of their comfort zones through the student built community and we hope to create a place where both creativity flows and innovation is second nature through traditional and unconventional means.
