Overview

Overview Welcome to the 2019 ELTHAM College Arts Season. The ELTHAM College Arts 2019 Season is our biggest and most ambitious yet. We will be making the most of our dedicated and skilled arts enthusiasts to provide audiences, students and the community with new and innovative ways to grow our hearts and minds. Art is not just what you see, but what you can make others see, and this year our community will be provided with a large range of creative opportunities to see the world from another perspective. The 2019 arts program will continue the tradition of fostering connections between year levels and arts disciplines with a wealth of opportunities for every member of the community to create, make, discuss and reflect on art together. There are more chances than ever before for the College community – parents, staff, and students - to be involved in the process of creative expression. Families can submit a film, develop a piece of art for our gallery exhibition, sing in the choir or attend one of our award winning performances. 2019 is a chance to come together as a family and participate in the arts at ELTHAM. Students at ELTHAM are invited to invest and indulge in the multitude of creative and performative opportunities open to them this year. Look through the pages of this beautiful booklet to see the myriad of choices available – whether you’re onstage, backstage, in the orchestra, in front of a canvas, behind a camera, in the crowd or wandering a gallery - your year of creative arts experiences starts here. Each of the events listed in the following pages will be the result of many hours of precision practice. Albert Einstein once said, “Not everything that counts can be counted”. This wisdom is aptly applied to artistic pursuit where the process is just as important as the outcome, and much can be gained by experiencing the dedication, growth and resilience needed to produce a great piece of art. Art needs to be experienced, heard, felt and lived. We believe strongly in the power of art to create positive change, both within and outside of ourselves and look forward to seeing you at our events throughout the year. Nicholas Waxman, Head of Visual and Performing Arts and Nicole Howard, Visual and Performing Arts Coordinator

Theatre Studies Play All Souls Taking a play from page to stage is the task the Unit 3 Theatre Studies class is required to complete for Outcome 1. Each student takes responsibility for two production roles and documents their process throughout the planning, development and presentation stages. The play for 2019 is All Souls by Daniel Keen. All Soul’s Day, or the Day of the Dead, is when the dead return to the world of the living. In the shadows of a crumbling urban landscape, three couples pass under the gaze of Phillippa, an ageing homeless visionary. The writing in this play is poetic and uncompromising.

Years 9–12 Play Love and Information Caryl Churchill’s Love and Information is like no other play ELTHAM College has produced. It is an exploration of modern life through a series of short scenes addressing issues about knowledge, technology, communication, and our capacity for love and connection. It puts the way we behave with each other, and the words we choose to bridge the gaps between us, under the microscope. There are more than 120 roles for actors, more than 60 scenes - no character names, no stage directions and no punctuation. This contemporary production will provide an abundance of opportunities for our skilled and dedicated performers to extend themselves creatively and artistically. Over 90 minutes the audience will experience a series of provocative and entertaining vignettes with each scene exploring a different facet of human existence.

With book by Dennis Kelly and original songs by Tim Minchin, Matilda The Musical is the story of an extraordinary girl who, armed with a vivid imagination and a sharp mind, dares to take stand and change her own destiny. Perfect for whole family, this is a musical you will never forget. The Years 9–12 musical sold out in 2 weeks, so please grab tickets early. Years 5-8 Production Fantastic Mr Fox ‘On a hill above the valley there was a wood. In the wood there was a huge tree. Under the tree there was a hole. In the hole lived Mr Fox and Mrs Fox and their four Small Foxes.’ - Fantastic Mr Fox. The 2019 Year 5 -8 drama production in 2019 will be an adaption of Roald Dahl’s classic tale, Fantastic Mr Fox. Mr Fox is clever. Far too clever for his local farmers, Boggis, Bunce and Bean. Still, even a very clever and cunning fox sometimes gets caught out - and when those devious farmers finally locate the whereabouts of Mr Fox’s home, it puts him and his family in danger. But Mr Fox is never beaten - and by trapping him and his family inside their foxhole, it looks like Boggis, Bunce and Bean might have accidentally shot themselves in the foot instead... The production led by Fred Whitlock will utilise shadow play, live music, and puppetry. All actors will be performing in character half mask which they will make themselves.

VCE Showings VCE Theatre Studies Unit 4 Monologue Interpretation Showing Term 3 sees the Unit 4 Theatre Studies students engage in developing and justifying an interpretation of a monologue (with elements from the scene designated) for their practical Stagecraft Exam. Many students choose to do directing and acting and direct themselves in a performance of the monologue. Some other students choose to focus on design (any two of make-up, costume, set pieces, properties and sound) and give a presentation which refers specifically to the monologue and the scene. Students also develop a theatrical brief that presents an interpretation of the scene they have chosen for their Practical Stagecraft Exam.

Public Speaking Competitions Carson Trophy All Senior School students research and craft a speech on a topic that interests them, with the intent to persuade an audience to their point of view. Young Playwrights Extension Program Presentation The Young Playwrights Extension Program will be running again in 2019. Budding playwrights develop the skills necessary to research, plan, create, edit, and present a short play for performance. The group will be guided through the developmental process and refine their writing skills in a number of key areas. Character development, story structure, genre, tone, pacing and many other elements of the process are broken down as the plays are constructed. This event will be the culmination of their efforts as they present a rehearsed reading of their work.
