Furne One dresses up Beyonce for her Grammy performance LOS ANGELES --- When superstar Beyonce, 34, sang “Take My Hand, Precious Lord” at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards show at the Staples Center, she wore a luminous and glittering cape made by Filipino fashion designer and Dubai-based Furne Amato. The Amato cape made the Queen B look more ethereal especially after the flood of stage lights beamed on her. Furne (short for Fernando, his real name is Fernando Barrios), who was born in Cebu and went to the University of San Carlos, told us in an email interview that he was very glad to work with the superstar again. He said, “I am very glad to work with Beyonce for the third time now. The first time I worked with her was during the opening video for her 'Mrs. Carter' tour and book. The second time was for 'On The Run' tour. Now, for the third time, it was for her performance at this year's Grammy Awards! I am very
thankful for to have such a wonderful relationship with Beyonce and her stylist. I'm definitely looking forward to see another collaboration in the horizon.” We asked the soft-spoken and humble designer how he got the gig. “I received an email from Beyonce’s stylist who saw my latest collection from Fashion Forward 4,” he revealed. “She then chose a few pieces and had them sent to L.A. as soon as possible for the Queen B to wear for her performance at the 2015 Grammy Awards.” Furne, who has dressed up other Hollywood celebrities like Jennifer Lopez, Shakira, Nicole Scherzinger, and Nicki Minaj, among others, described his experi-
JANET NEPALES AND FURNE ONE ence of dressing up the Queen B at the popular music awards show, “Beyonce is such an icon and being able to dress her up more than once, is every designer’s dream. Not only did she look amazing in the design, but she also embodies the Amato woman --- a woman who is not afraid to defy the rules and dictates of fashion.” Furne’s Beyonce coup actually followed after he just dressed up six-time Grammy Award winner songstress, Carrie Underwood for her pre-kick off Super Bowl performance where she sang a remix of her song, “Waiting All Day for the Super Bowl Fight” and she wore a stunning eggshell beaded mini dress by Furne Amato. Furne said of that experience, “I actually have a couple of dresses in a showroom in Los Angeles for buyers and stylists to browse through. Carrie Underwood’s stylist then coordinated with my L.A. team Mikey and Alexis, to use one of my designs for her Super Bowl performance.” Furne, who got his big break in 1994 when he joined the 1st Mega Magazine Young Designers Competition where he bagged the first prize that was a trip to Paris and New York and trained with no less than New York-based Filipino fashion de-
signer, Josie Natori, is also doing the finale for this month’s Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week. He confessed, “To be honest, I was quite reluctant to join the New York Fashion Week this time around. I just have my hands full at the moment.” His second time at the said event, Furne will be showcasing his 17-piece collection in the biggest fashion event in the country. Known for his theatrical and dramatic pieces, Furne explained his style, “Everyone who has seen my shows knows that I love making dramatic and theatrical pieces. It is what the brand stands for. If I were to choose a different career, I would like to design costumes for theatre and movies.” He added that he would love to work with some of Hollywood’s fashion icons on the red carpet. He said, “I would love to work with my muses --- Cate Blanchett, Tilda Swinton and Nicole Kidman--- preferably in a fantasy or period film.” So what is he busy working on now, we asked. “In between developing my next collection for Autumn/Winter 2015 and creating a brand new prêt-a-porter line, we are working on rebranding the Amato label as well as opening a new atelier,” he revealed. “So definitely, expect greater things from Amato.”

Sarah G keeps it simple amid success Cristine Reyes on new baby Amarah BLESSED with an enviable mix of talent and beauty, singer-actress Sarah Geronimo is one of the country’s biggest stars whose personal and professional life remain rosy. Sarah confirmed in a recent interview that her movie with Piolo Pascual, originally slated for a Valentine’s Day release, will push through but at a later date. She said they might start working on the film after the second season of “The Voice of the Philippines,” where she is coach-judge. There’s also talk of Sarah being paired in a movie with Korean star Lee Min Ho. While Sarah could only be hopeful about this, she has yet to discuss the matter with Viva big boss Vic del Rosario. What’s sure is that her beautiful relationship with real-life leading man, boyfriend Matteo Guidicelli, continues to bloom. Despite being loaded with work – which even kept them from celebrating Valentine’s Day together – she makes it a point to find time for Matteo, and vice versa. “Every day halos ang trabaho (pero) singit-singit lang ng oras minsan (para sa amin),” Sarah explained. Asked what she considers the best Valentine’s gift ever, Sarah said it all boils down to love and understanding. Her happy love life helps her keep a pleasant demeanor, which
SARAH GERONIMO translates to her looking good all the time. Sarah maintained that being beautiful starts in the mind. “Marami tayong insecurities. That’s a fact na hindi natin maiiwasan, especially kapag may nakikita tayong mestiza, mas maganda sa ’tin, mas sexy. Pero you have to find in yourself kung ano ang strengths mo, what makes you special,” she said. “Kaya nga mentally, kailangan paniwalaan mo na espesyal ka, maganda ka; (na) iba lang ang ganda mo sa kanila. Kanyakanyang ganda lang ’yan.” Sarah practices what she preaches. Some say she looks quite refreshing even with minimal
makeup. Despite being the newest endorser of San San Cosmetics, Sarah believes natural beauty also shines through. “Minsan tinatago natin ’yung natural beauty natin, parang feeling natin mas magiging maganda tayo pagka kino-conceal natin ’yung totoong features natin,” Sarah said. “Pero with San San, pinapaalala nila na, ‘Believe in your own natural beauty.’” Sarah added, “(Dapat) paniwalaan mo na magandang tao ka. Hindi lang siya ’yung dahil sa skin mo or sa features mo, dapat ’yung buong pagkatao mo mahalin mo. It’s a process (of acceptance).” – Manila Bulletin

MANILA, Philippines – Actress Cristine Reyes has given birth and has shared a photo of her new baby. On Instagram, Cristine shared a photo of her daughter Amarah born on February 8. "Meet Amarah! February 8th, Sunday our Amarah finally came to see it. She really was such a wonderful blessing. I fought for two weeks to hold her in. I've been put on total bed rest and wasn't able to sit, move and stand. Was on heavy medication on my birthday and spent the day knocked out. "I was monitored every two hours for awhile. I was In and out of the delivery room. But then, time has come that Amarah wanted to see the world, in which, none can control," Cristine wrote on Instagram. "That feeling of love was instantaneous. However, she came a little too early than expected and now in need of critical care and assistance. It's hard to see her handled by different people in the NICU. I just hope and pray that she's well taken cared for. I realized that no one can't beat the loving and tender care of a mother. "Just got a little apprehensive when I learned that there was a one person visitor policy. It breaks my heart at the time when Ali and I have to leave the hospital without her in our arms. It's sad but we have to be strong.

NEW MOM. Cristine Reyes has given birth to her daughter Amarah. We've been fighting for our little angel and now she has to fight this alone. If it were in my hands, I'd love for my daughter to reach full term. "I did everything to make sure that she was healthy. I read books, seek advice from my in-laws, family, friends and professionals to make sure all was well. I just don't think it's fair when people judge me and saying that it was my fault. I plan to disregard NEGATIVITY in my life. My only priority right now is our little fighter "I actually don't really need to explain myself. Our baby is getting stronger everyday and we will be
with her throughout the fight," "She's our wonderful blessing. She will win this battle like a champ just like her father. My family and friends will be praying for our Amarah. Her Dad and I loves her so much! Last November, Cristine confirmed the news that she was pregnant in a live performance on ASAP. In an interview on The Buzz, Cristine said she did not immediately inform everyone of her pregnancy because it was delicate. In December, Cristine and Ali had a gender revelation party, where they announced that they were expecting a girl. – Rappler.com

They’ve always been there for me all those years, and so when they ask ‘can we have a picture taken with you?’ I say, ‘sure.’” No wonder Martin is well-loved by his fans. -Manila Bulletin

Pinoy cop Neil Perez wins Mister International pageant THE Philippines’ bet Neil Perez (real name: Mariano Perez Flormata, Jr) clinched the crown at the 2014 Mister International pageant held over the weekend in Seoul, South Korea. The 29-year-old hunk cop bested 28 other candidates and became the first Filipino to win the title of the nine-year-old male beauty tilt. Perez spoke Tagalog and used an interpreter to answer the question, “What has been your biggest disappointment in life?” Candidate from Lebanon (Rabdi El Zein) ended up as 1st runner-up, followed by Czech Republic (Tomáš Dumbrovský), 2nd runner-up, Poland (Rafal Maslak), 3rd runner-up and Slovenia (Mitja Nadizar), 4th runner-up. Perez, who wore an Ati-Atihaninspired costume, also won third
place in the National Costume competition. He was behind China’s Shi Yu Quan and Indonesia’s Kevin Hendrawan. Recall that prior the competition, Perez vowed to bring home the Mister International crown in tribute to the 44 members of the Philippine National Police-Special Action Force (PNP-SAF) who were killed in a clash with armed men in Mamasapano, Maguindanao last month. Perez is a bomb and explosives technician assigned to PNP’s Aviation and Security Group (PNPAvsegroup) unit. He disclosed that some of those slain were his batchmates in Batch Mabalasig. “Pinapangako ko po na dadalhin ko po ang korona, ang titulo dito sa bansa,” he told “TV Patrol” in an interview. At first, Perez was nervous in the competition, saying it’s his first time to compete in an international pageant and thinks he lacks communication skills. To boost his confidence, he said via Push, “Marami akong babaunin na lucky charm karamihan bigay ng

features Fall Fashion... through tactile texture and luxe layering. Istanbul – famous for its pampering baths, eclectic markets, glittering palaces and whirling dervishes – was evident in the FilAm designer’s delightful ensemble. Models wearing fez hats walked the runway to Turkish music while wrapped in tassel blankets. “Natori has succeeded in adding glamour to your everyday wear!” said Anna Palanska, a model from Bayview, N.Y., who imagined sashaying on the snowy streets of Manhattan in such outfits. Handmade, over-the-top necklaces and belts from Natori’s Philippine collection also made quite an impact. For evening wear, the black strapless fille coupe feather trim gown would be a showstopper. Seductive yet chic, it is perfect for any red carpet event. Natori said it took her a year to prepare the opulent collection. EFFORTLESS SOPHISTICATION Meanwhile, Lhuillier’s ready-towear preview boasted 36 of her jewel-toned collection of fluid evening looks. “My Fall 2015 collection plays on the juxtaposition of masculine versus feminine for effortless sophistication,” said the Cebuana designer. “Fluid silhouettes inspired by

Floral camo jacquard appeared throughout the show in shades of emerald, plum and cobalt with accents of guipure lace and embroidery. There were also star-embellished tulle, revealing cut-outs and sheer. Shimmering evening gowns were enhanced by bold tuxedo jackets beneath embellished milk and long-haired fox jackets. Lhuillier, whose name is synonymous with ethereal bridal gowns, revealed that supermodel and style icon Kate Moss was her muse for this season. “The muse behind this collection is Kate Moss because she plays by her own rules,” she said. The designer’s first foray in footwear and handbag was also introduced that evening. “Many in the collection are breathtakingly beautiful, but my most favorite is the Look #34,” said Janette Banawis whose daughter Gail is also a fashion model. The favored piece is the forest green multifloral embroidered long sleeve gown which was paired with an emerald floral satin tie-front peep toe stiletto sandal with cutout detailing. “It was simply magical,” she said.

Pinoys go to Mars... The Mars One project aims to get people on Mars by 2024, where they will establish a colony – essentially, a one-way ticket to Earth's neighbor. In her profile on Mars One, Rañeses, 24, describes herself as a writer, and that she is an "intellectual wanderer" seeking "growth in knowledge and philosophy." "I don’t decide based on monetary or materialistic returns, but on the experience I will garner," she said in her introduction. Philosophy, literature, and history are her top interests – "[generally], anything that can lead to comprehending mankind’s behavior and the many possible structures society can take form in the future." Meanwhile, Orillosa, 27, is an entrepreneur distributing raw material metals and exotic alloys to aerospace, defense, and commercial industries, according to her Mars One profile. In fact, she says one of their clients is Space Exploration Technologies, or SpaceX: "Our materials/ product was part of the Dragon Capsule that was successfully launched in 2010." She also is working towards earning a Bachelors degree in Business. TWO OUT OF 202,586 A whopping 202,586 people from around the world applied for the project, which was whittled down to 600, then the current crop of 100 candidates. The candidates come from all continents: 39 from the Americas, 31 from Europe, 16 from Asia, 7 from Africa, and 7 from Oceania. The top 100 were chosen after
MINER MINERVVA AND JJAAYMEE. Screen shots from their community profiles. they were interviewed by Norbert Kraft, the project's chief medical officer. "We were impressed with how many strong candidates participated in the interview round, which made it a very difficult selection," he was quoted as saying. The third round selection is the easy part, Mars One said: the candidates will now be trained to compose teams "that can endure all the hardships of a permanent settlement on Mars." "Being one of the best individual candidates does not automatically make you the greatest team player, so I look forward to seeing how the candidates progress and work together in the upcoming challenges," Kraft said. The final cut will see only two dozen people abandoning Earth for a new start on a cold, dry, oxygenless planet some 55 million kilometers (34 million miles or 6 months' travel) away. The high cost of the project, an estimated $6 billion (4.4 billion euros), precludes the option of a return trip. The trial resettlement is meant to be mainly funded by a reality-TV
show about the project. The final 24 would be sent to the Red Planet in 6 separate launches starting in 10 years. Many experts scoff at the project's feasibility, questioning whether the participants would survive the physical perils and demands on their sanity. On the other hand, its supporters include Dutch Nobel laureate Gerard 't Hooft, who won the 1999 prize for physics. The world's space agencies have only managed to send unmanned robotic rovers to Mars so far, the latest being NASA's $2.5 billion Curiosity rover, which touched down in August 2012. If it succeeds, Mars One would be the first private-sector initiative, manned or unmanned, to explore another planet. But the biggest question, once everything's set, is: could they survive? A study by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, using Mars One data, said that they can – but only for 68 days. – With reports from Agence France-Presse and Victor Barreiro Jr/ Rappler.com
WIND GUSTS NEAR HURRICANE FOR CE create poor visibility along Cape Cod Bay in Bourne, Massachusetts on Feb. 15. A FORCE storm brought a new round of wind-whipped snow to New England, threatening white-out conditions in coastal areas and forcing people to contend with a fourth winter onslaught in less than a month. Inquirer.net/AP
More cold... early Monday. Snowfall amounts of six to 12 inches (15 centimeters to 30 centimeters) are anticipated in much of the mid-Atlantic, which includes Washington DC as well as New York City some 200 miles (350 kilometers) to the north. US forecasters said the storm would buffet a wide swath of the eastern United States with snow, gale-force winds and brutal cold. Unusually frigid cold was expected as far south as the Carolinas, which most years enjoy temperate winters with temperatures that seldom dip much below freezing. “In addition to the widespread
precipitation expected, the unusually cold weather is forecast to continue through much of the upcoming week for the eastern US, with temperature anomalies on the order of 20 to 30 degrees below average by mid-February standards,” the NWS said. Hardest hit cities Among the cities expected to be hardest hit by the temperature plunge are Erie, Pennsylvania, where thermometers are expected to fall to minus 28 degrees Celsius (minus 18.4 Fahrenheit) and Cleveland, Ohio, with minus 22 degrees Celsius (minus 7.6 degrees Fahrenheit). The Flightaware air travel website said that some 1,500 flights had been cancelled by midday Monday, before the latest bout of inclement weather had been felt.
February has set a record as the snowiest month ever in Boston, with 10 times the snowfall it would get in a typical winter. With the snowstorm expected to at least brush New England’s most populous city, mountains of snow piling up in the city were likely to grow even higher. “No end appears in sight as to the brutal winter we have experienced,” the NWS wrote in its Boston forecast. “This month will definitely be one for the record books in terms of snowfall and monthly average temperature,” the NWS said. Photos of the blanketed city showed snowplows clearing roads and tow trucks rescuing buried vehicles, while officials warned drivers to stay off the roads.-Inquirer.net

How will individual shared responsibility affect your tax return? UNLESS you've been way out of touch, you probably know that a key part of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) requires that taxpayers have qualifying health care coverage. Those without will need to qualify for an exemption, or pay a penalty. This "Individual Shared Responsibility" provision applies to both individuals and families. So, while preparing your tax return this year, here are some things you ought to know. If in 2014, you, your spouse and everyone else on your tax return (dependents) had "minimum essential coverage," which includes most employer-sponsored plans, as well as programs such as Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP and insurance pur-
chased through the Health Insurance Marketplace, you're in fine shape. Just check the appropriate box that says you are insured for the full year. If there were months that someone on your return had no coverage, that person needs to qualify for an exemption or pay a penalty. To qualify for an exemption, one of the following situations must exist: * The individual does not have access to affordable coverage because the minimum annual premium available is more than eight percent of the household income. * The gap in coverage existed for less than three months. * The individual qualifies for
other exemptions that include a hardship or being a member of a group that is exempt from health coverage (for example, incarcerated inmates or members of a federally recognized Indian tribe). Without coverage or an exemption, you'll have to pay a penalty for each month you were not insured. This penalty is calculated and reported on your tax return. In general, the payment amount is the greater of 1 percent of your household income over the filing threshold for your filing status, or $95 per person ($47.50 per person under 18 years old). This caps at a family maximum of $285 for 2014. You'll owe half the annual payment for each month you or another
person on your return doesn't have either qualifying health care or an exemption. Sound complicated? Taxes are. That's why so many taxpayers are thrilled to turn their taxes over to a paid preparer. If that's your plan this year, be careful to make sure your preparer is licensed and required to complete continuing education to keep up with the changing tax code. Enrolled agents ("EAs") are licensed by the U.S. Department of Treasury, must pass an exam administered by IRS and complete IRS-approved continuing education. You can trust your taxes to an EA -- locate one in your area on the searchable "Find an EA" database at www.naea.org. -NewsUSA
TALK TO A CHIROPRACTOR if you experience whiplash pain.
Whiplash sufferers can benefit from chiropractic care IT'S one of the most common injuries from a car crash, and those who've experienced it know it can be even more painful than watching a C-SPAN hearing on waste management. But in fact, whiplash, as it's commonly known, is about more than just immediate pain. That's because this injury to the soft tissues of the neck from a sudden jerking or "whipping" of the head can also destabilize the spine -- and leave you with severe, long-term pain if left untreated. It can take anywhere from hours to months for symptoms to manifest themselves, but they include: * Blurred vision * Headaches * Neck, arm, shoulder and lowback pain * Dizziness * Neck stiffness * Reduced range of motion in the neck Since the health of your spine, which houses the nervous system, isn't something you want to gamble with, many health experts recom-
mend seeking chiropractic care at the first sign of one or more of those indicators. "Chiropractors are specially trained to evaluate and care for neuromusculoskeletal injuries like whiplash," said Gerard Clum, DC, of the not-for-profit Foundation for Chiropractic Progress. Chiropractic care is aimed at what's been described as "restoring the body" center by making manual and instrument adjustments to improve spine alignment and function. This care may be supported by massage and other softtissue techniques. A Doctor of Chiropractic may refer a patient for additional testing or other specialized examination procedures. In situations where it is needed, he/she may also co-manage the patient's care with other providers. The best part? "It's effective while being completely drug-free," said Dr. Clum. Medicine safety reminders for cold and flu season AMERICANS catch approximately 1 billion colds each year, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that as many as 20 percent of people in the U.S. will get the flu this cold and flu season. A majority of people (seven in 10) will use overthe-counter (OTC) medicines to treat their symptoms, and many of these medicines contain acetaminophen. Acetaminophen is the most common drug ingredient in America, found in more than 600 prescription (Rx) and OTC medicines, including pain relievers, fever reducers and many cough, cold and flu medicines. It's safe and effective when used as directed, but taking more than the maximum daily dose of 4,000 milligrams is an overdose and can lead to liver damage. The Acetaminophen Awareness Coalition (AAC), a group of leading health, health care provider and consumer organizations, is reminding consumers to double-check their medicine labels to avoid doubling up on acetaminophen this winter. "Cold and flu season is a very important time to remind patients to be diligent about reading their medicine labels and knowing the ingredients in their medicines," said Anne Norman, APRN, DNP, FNP-BC, Associate
Vice President of Education at the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, a founding organization of the AAC. "People may use a medicine to treat their cold or flu symptoms on top of a medicine they are already taking, not realizing that both might contain acetaminophen." The AAC's Know Your Dose campaign reminds consumers to follow four medicine safe-use steps: 1. Always read and follow the medicine label. 2. Know if medicines contain acetaminophen, which is listed on the front panel of packaging and in bold type or highlighted in the "active ingredients" section of OTC medicine labels, and sometimes listed as "APAP" or "acetam" on Rx labels. 3. Never take two medicines that contain acetaminophen at the same time. 4. Ask your health care provider or a pharmacist if you have questions about dosing instructions or medicines that contain acetaminophen. For additional information and a list of some common medicines that contain acetaminophen, visit KnowYourDose.org or follow @KnowYourDose on Twitter. NewsUSA
HOMEOWNERS NEED to be prepared for new water heater regulations.
Homeowners may be in hot water with new water heater regulations
DO YOU KNOW YOUR DOSE?
Warning signs your homeowners insurance premium is about to increase WORRIED that you'll soon be paying more for your homeowners insurance? That's a lot more reasonable a concern than, say, Gwyneth Paltrow fretting about the burdens of being famous. In fact, in some states premiums have risen so dramatically -- Texas being Exhibit A, with recent hikes of as much as 14.9 percent -- that they've become a hot political issue. So what triggers a rate increase? Well, if you understand that a lot of it involves actuarial calculations -insurance companies' need, as it's been described, to "collect enough money and pay only a few claims in order to make a profit after business expenses" -- you'll at least have a shot, in some cases, of avoiding the hit. Read on for some of the biggest warning signs of an impending rate increase. * Filing a claim. Consider your suspicions more or less confirmed. According to a recently released report by InsuranceQuotes.com, putting in for even one claim results in an average hike of 9 percent nationwide and as much as an average of 32 percent in Wyoming. "Even a denied claim can cause your premium to go up," says se-
WHA WHATT CAN YOU DO to keep your homeowners insurance rate in check? nior analyst Laura Adams. And don't even ask what kind of spike you're looking at should you file a second claim. (Okay, an average of 20 percent, per the report, with Michigan policyholders
particularly soaked for as much as 71 percent.) * Improper roof care. You've undoubtedly heard how your home's "curb appeal" can determine whether prospective buyers flock to
(or run from) your residence without even exiting their cars. Well, insurance adjusters can -- and do -perform "drive-bys" of their own. And their main concern is how well your roof is performing. If it looks in bad shape, insurers can jack up your rate or cancel your policy entirely. "Insurance carriers would prefer not to cover a home when a roof looks like it's about to fail," says one expert. If, on the other hand, the same adjuster sees that you've got a snappy new roof, your rate may actually decrease. Prefer the latter scenario? Jason Joplin, program manager of the Center for the Advancement of Roofing Excellence, says to check out the Timberline collection of shingles from GAF (www.gaf.com) -- North America's largest roofing manufacturer -- since those shingles have the advantage of being "rugged, good-looking, and affordable" all at the same time. * Change in circumstances. Has your once-cozy suburban neighborhood ballooned in size? Not good, but consider yourself toast if the actuaries spot a pattern -- and they will -- of your neighbors having recently filed any of those dreaded claims. -NewsUSA
IN less than two months, new water heater efficiency standards will take effect and may end up hitting homeowners with an unexpected (and costly) expense. To grasp the coming regulations, as imposed by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), homeowners need to understand the impetus behind it -- which is that, according to the DOE, by replacing residential water heaters, pool heaters and direct heating equipment, consumers will save up to $10 billion and prevent the release of up to 164 million metric tons of carbon dioxide over 30 years. "These energy-conserving appliance standards are a critical part of the Administration's overall efforts to save energy in homes and businesses nationwide," said former DOE Secretary Steven Chu. "By raising the energy efficiency requirements of our every-day appliances, we will save money for American families and companies, reduce carbon pollu-tion, and enhance our energy security for decades to come." While no one is arguing the benefits of going green, the down side is the upfront cost to the consumer. "Our customers could face price increases of up to 15 percent to 35 percent," said Mary Kennedy
Thompson, president of Mr. Rooter Plumbing. "Not only will the cost of water heaters increase an average of $120, but installation and maintenance costs will likely rise as well. As a result of new regulations that require a more complicated installation and increased amount of system parts necessary, homeowners could face a hefty replacement fee in the short run." The added expense, says Thompson, comes in the form of the larger size of the new water heater units. Electric hot water heaters larger than 55 gallons -- the minimum required for most residential homes -- will require a minimum of 128 cu. ft. with a duct to a larger space in order to comply with the new standards. This means that homeowners will have the added burden of not only replacing a water heater, but potentially also undergoing a major renovation involving construction. To combat a potentially highpriced situation, homeowners should consider checking the age of their hot water heaters. If they are getting close to the 10-year mark, they can be replaced before the new regulations take effect. For more information on the right plan for your home, visit www.MrRooter.com. -NewsUSA
Adjusting for a new life during pregnancy BEING pregnant is the experience of a lifetime for most women. But when it comes to prenatal care, many don't know that a doctor of chiropractic care can help with the aches and pains that come with their changing posture. "As the body changes during pregnancy, the head, spine and pelvis can become stressed," explains Dr. Lora Tanis, a chiropractor specializing in pediatric and pregnancy care. "Chiropractic care provides gentle, effective adjustments to relieve headaches, neck and back pain -- all without the use of medication." This is especially important since a UCLA study found that the drug acetaminophen, if taken during pregnancy, has been associated
with a higher risk in children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Experts now suggest that non-pharmacological approaches, including chiropractic care, can effectively manage pain. "A postural spinal motion evaluation and treatment can establish balance in a pregnant woman's pelvis and reduce undue stress to her uterus and supporting ligaments," Tanis says. "In addition, with a balanced pelvis, babies have a greater chance of moving into the correct position for birth." For a healthier pregnancy, more women are discovering that chiropractic care delivers. For more information, visit yes2 chiropractic .org. -NewsUSA
LIFE&STYLE Virtually everywhere -- your cash may be a thing of the past COINS jangling in a pocket is likely to be a thing of the past if companies that promote virtual currency (VC) have anything to say about it. The attraction of using VC stems from massive credit card hacks to retailers, such as Home Depot and Target -- all of which have raised questions among consumers about how safe their personal information is. Currently, consumers have much of their information on display with their credit card company of choice and, for anyone with mediocre knowledge of technology and a laptop, it means open season. This is why it makes sense to consider how blockchain technologies (i.e., virtual currency) may help. One of the problems is that there are only about 80,000 merchants worldwide that recognize and use VC, but from a business standpoint, it is worth exploring. Not only does it fit into a global economy, but it also offers consumers a higher level of security. The upside for retailers like Overstock and Dell (which support the use of virtual currency) is that it reduces credit card and debit card fees from 3 percent to 1 percent after the first $1 million in sales, which in turn defrays outgoing business costs and puts that money back into retailers' bottom line. While much has been made of VC, it is clear that companies are using it and creating better ways to bridge old-world payment systems and new, coming technological advances. As an example, MovoCash (www.movocash.com) is a digital currency that allows consumers to link peer-to-peer (P2P) transfers that can be spent in-store, through ecommerce and m-commerce. Consumers link their bank accounts to their MovoCash account for mobile payments with no limitation on the number of supported merchants. BY ERIC SOLIS Founder and CEO of MovoCash For NewsUSA communication (NFC), such as that used by Apple Pay. Another benefit of MovoCash is that consumers' personal credit or bank information is not stored on merchant servers, but rather in a PCIcompliant environment, where tokenized form factors are generated to secure transactions using gateway technology and existing merchant POS terminals. MovoCash follows bank rules and regulations, which are designed to protect consumers and merchants. The reality is that both are hesitant to adopt VC, which is why MovoCash is working on a product feature called BARK -Bitcoin Account Relay Key -- which will allow consumers to convert Bitcoin to MovoCash (in a PCI-compliant environment) and enable them to spend anywhere Visa & MasterCard are accepted. In this way, MovoCash catapults itself to the forefront of payments by integrating the old-world way of doing payments with newworld technology and advancement, with the opportunity to take a bite out of a $190 billion annual fraud problem for consumers, banks and merchants. -NewsUSA
MUCH is being made of Apple's announcement of the iPhone 6 and the Apple Watch. Overshadowed by this, however, was the introduction of Apple Pay -- a technology touting an easier way to pay for goods and services using mobile devices. But is this too much too soon -- even for Apple? Coming on the heels of this month's massive credit card breach at Home Depot, it is clear that credit card companies need to rethink how consumers' personal information is handled. Relying on near field communication (NFC), Apple Pay will link a consumer's mobile phone with retail stores that are NFC-enabled. NFC technology has been praised for its security and convenience, but analysts argue that mobile payments will suffer because consumers are not yet comfortable paying with their phone, and merchants are finding that using NFC technology is more expensive than the traditional debit and credit card system. For concerned individuals, they need only look to the horizon.
ARE CONSUMERS ready to forgo their debit and credit cards? Launching on Nov. 15, a company called MovoCash will address the gaps left by NFC technology. "MovoCash is a transformative way to think about payments," says Eric Solis, CEO and founder of the company. "What we're doing is serving as a convergence technology designed to help consumers

bridge the gap between old-world payment systems and new technological advances." MovoCash, according to Solis, is a bank-agnostic payments platform that allows consumers to link their bank accounts to their MovoCash account for mobile payments with no limitation on the num-
ber of supported banks. Any bank account or credit or debit card in your wallet can be used to load a MovoCash account, eliminating the direct link required by conventional NFC technology. What this means is that there is no direct link between the merchant and consumers' personal credit or banking information. Should the MovoPlastic card get hacked, the dummy number on the card will not reveal any personal information. It can be loaded with as much (or as little) money as desired. Additionally, the company's redemption technology differentiates it from Venmo and PayPal by unlocking P2P (peer to peer) payments for immediate merchant purchases. "We believe MovoCash addresses consumers' desire for a more integrated payment experience using a mobile device without changing their comfort level of using a mag stripe on the back of a plastic card," says Solis. "We consider that ultimate level, Level 4, to be full autonomy, where you just get in and you don't interact with the car at all," explained Cosmin Laslau, lead analyst at Lux Research. "And we don't think that's coming by 2030. The biggest opportunity that we see will be actually from the Level 2 features, which are the more conventional advances that we're already starting to see come onto the market from higherend developers." Hermann Winner, director and professor of automotive engineering at Germany's Technische Universit?t Darmstadt, agreed. "The big challenge to total automation is getting safety approval. Even if you assume the system is ready by 2020, approval is going to be problematic." RECREA TION AL GOLFERS have options to improve their golf game. RECREATION TIONAL
GOOGLE has been making news in recent months for its work in a ground-breaking area: driverless automobile technology. A prototype of Google's new self-driving car -- a two-passenger electric vehicle with buttons to turn the vehicle on and off, but no steering wheel, accelerator pedal or brake pedal -- was unveiled in May. Without a driver at the wheel, the car is instead guided by a light detection and ranging (LIDAR) rotating sensor on the vehicle's roof that scan the vehicle's surroundings to determine its driving route as well as to identify such obstacles as pedestrians, bicyclists and other cars. While Google is widely considered a front-runner in the development of such advanced automation technology, the major automakers are also getting into the race. Albeit at a more conservative pace, they're introducing automated features that perform specific tasks -- such as adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning and collision-avoidance braking -- to their new car models. According to a recent report by Lux Research, cars with these socalled "Level 2" features are expected to account for 92 percent of a worldwide $87 billion-per-year autonomous car market by 2030. Only 8 percent of the market will go to "Level 3" cars, which would be primarily driven autonomously, but would allow drivers to regain control of the vehicle in an emergency. In addition, the research firm

"TO shave strokes from your golf game, the only equipment you need is a good eraser." Although this phrase is uttered jokingly by many golfers, recreational golfers who've reached their plateau have had very few other options, until now. "If recreational golfers insist on following the rules used by the PGA Tour, there's little they can do to immediately improve their game," says John Hoeflich, executive director, of the United States Recreational Golf Association (USRGA). "However, if they play by USRGA rules, they do have the option to switch to better equipment." The USRGA is the official organization that governs recreational golf. Its rules allow the use of higher-performance golf equipment. Hoeflich estimates that more than half of U.S. golfers agree with the USRGA rules that permit equipment that "puts fun back in the game, speeds up play and helps achieve better scores." Callaway Golf started the recreational equipment movement in 2000 with the ERC II driver. Now Polara Golf is advancing the movement with its Advantage driver and Ultimate Straight golf balls -- both engineered to eclipse the PGA limits, which means you can't play them in
the Masters or U.S. Open. David Felker, chief technology officer for Polara Golf, explains, "Our drivers and balls are not intended for the top amateur players and professionals. We purposely designed equipment that exceeds the performance limits accepted by the PGA Tour, so that recreational golfers can experience less frustration, score lower and have more fun." A 2012 Google consumer survey revealed that 63 percent of respondents would consider using golf equipment that provides a performance advantage. This sentiment is shared by the PGA of America president, Ted Bishop, who says, "I think anything we can do to relax the rules, if it means putting non-conforming equipment in the hands of players that enable them to hit the ball higher and farther and enjoy the game more -- what's the problem?" According to the National Golf Foundation, golf rounds have fallen by 8 percent since 2007, largely due to the frustrations of the game, excessive play times and high costs. "The technology now exists to make golf more pleasurable for everyone," says Felker. "Who doesn't want to have more fun?" For more information, visit www.polaragolf.com and www.usrga.org. -NewsUSA
Maximize your teleconferences with better tools AS the number of workers who telecommute or work remotely increases, conference calls are even more essential for effective communication. Having access to the latest technology will help ensure that all participants in the call are engaged in the presentation and understand the message, making meetings more productive and efficient. Here are the top features to make your teleconferences better: * Screen sharing. Connecting people who aren't working in the same place, screen sharing allows them to collaborate on demos, presentations, reports and more, as if they were in the same room. Finding a conference calling service with screen sharing is crucial for those who work remotely. For example, the screen sharing technology from UberConference makes interaction during conference calls as simple as a single mouse click. "Adding screen sharing has been the single most requested feature from our users since day one," says Craig Walker, co-founder and CEO of UberConference. "One of the beauties of our cloud-based platform is that we are able to upgrade every user and give this great screen sharing experience to everybody at no additional cost." * Document sharing. This makes it simple for you or anyone in your conference call to share notes, docu-
ments and files with everyone else, making it an online meeting. "Google Drive files can even be edited live within our conference," says Walker. "The best part is that, at the end of the call, links to the notes and files are included in emailed call summaries." * Access from any type of device. Advances in teleconferencing tools make it easy to start and schedule conference calls on the go, create instant calls with a click and schedule calls by simply selecting contacts and picking a meeting time. "We've created specially designed mobile apps for iPhone and Android that allow you to see your conference in action -- who's there and who's talking, just like on the web," says Walker. * Join from anywhere. Let's face it. Sometimes flights, traffic and vacations get in the way of important meetings. Now, with certain services, a phone connection or WiFi are all you'll need to be on top of your game. * Call controls. If you find yourself in a noisy location during the call, you can easily mute your line while still listening to everyone else on the call. You can also add participants on the fly and view social profile information, among many other useful tools. For more information, visit www.uberconference.com. NewsUSA

The order came from Judge Andrew Hanen of the Federal District Court in Brownsville, Texas in response to a suit presented by that state and 25 other Republican governors and attorneys general, the Washington Post and New York Times reported Tuesday, February 17. The Post said the order seeks to postpone implementation of the order issued in November until a trial on its legality can be held. The president's plan would offer protection from deportation and work permits to as many as 5 million undocumented immigrants. The first of those initiatives was to have started receiving applications on Wednesday. Hanen said the Obama administration had not complied with basic administrative procedures for putting such a broad program into effect, the Times said. The Obama administration says the president has acted within federal authority for a president to enforce immigration laws. In a statement issued overnight, the White House reiterated its stance. It said Obama had enacted "commonsense policies to help fix our broken immigration system." Underground economy Some 11 million people live in the United States without residency papers, many working in the underground economy. The Justice Department and other authorities believe Obama
acted legally, and that his policies will benefit the economy, the White House statement said. "The district court’s decision wrongly prevents these lawful, commonsense policies from taking effect and the Department of Justice has indicated that it will appeal that decision," the statement said. However, Texas and the other states said the executive measures amounted to a heavy handed order that imposes big costs on state budgets. Hanen said the president's policies had been costly already. "The court finds that the government's failure to secure the border has exacerbated illegal immigration into this country," Hanen wrote, the papers said. "Further, the record supports the finding that this lack of enforcement, combined with the country's high rate of illegal immigration, significantly drains the states' resources." Under the Obama plan, threeyear deportation deferrals and work permits were offered for undocumented immigrants who have not committed serious crimes, have been in America at least five years and have children who are American citizens or legal residents. But Hanen accused the administration of being "disingenuous" when it said the president's initiatives did not significantly alter existing policies. Hanen said the programs were "a massive change" affecting "the nation’s entire immigration scheme and the states who must bear the lion’s share of its consequences." – Rappler.com

Shortly after she transitioned, Angel was signed up at Thailandbased Apple Management Agency, the world's first that represents transgender models. This Thailandbased agency is a leader in this major new fashion industry trend. “Asian transgender models are overlooked in the fashion industry,” Noam Lev, Apple agency founder and director, has noted. “Filling the gap is long overdue in an industry that constantly seeks emerging trends.” Angel Qinan, the first Filipina at Apple’s elite lineup of 15 transgender Asian models, was groomed and trained to walk, dress, move, and pose while Apple worked to book them with top clients in the best markets of the fashion and commercial industry. They all hope and wait to grace the covers of high fashion magazines, appear on television and advertisement, and strut the runways of New York, Paris or Milan. Angel Qinan did not have to wait very long. On February 21, she'll walk the ramps for the grand finale of Sacramento Fashion Week, modeling this year’s fall and winter couture (scheduled for February 1521). At the casting call, Angel impressed Maisha Bahati. For fouryears, the fashion week veteran has introduced contemporary, ready-towear designer clothes like those featured in boutiques in Sacramento, Los Angeles and New York. Angel will model Maisha’s current collection which represents strong, confident, and feminine women. “I was drawn to Angel’s exotic look, strong and graceful walk, positive spirit and high energy,“ Maisha said about spotting Angel at the casting call. “I prefer diversity on my runway and feel attracted to models who'll represent my brand well.” Angel Qinan is the first Filipina and first transgender model to rep-

resent Bahati’s clothing line at Sacramento Fashion Week. She's gaining traction in the fashion industry in a remarkably short time. Lev and Bahati hope the demand for transgender models will continue to grow so women like Angel Qinan could flourish in the fashion industry. Several years ago, the media was filled with the very public and successful transition of Bosnian model Andreja Pejic from male to female modeling. The visibility of transgender models, actresses and artists has increased through the years as the world slowly opens its eyes to their potential and talents. Laverne Cox, the first openly transgender person to appear on the cover of Time in June of 2014, was also nominated for an Emmy for her role as Sophia Burse in the popular television series, “Orange is the New Black”. She claims that her role in the series serves as a platform to speak on the rights of transgender people. But what is a Transgender? GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) explains, “Transgender is an umbrella term for people whose gender identity and/ or gender expression differs from what is typically associated with the sex they were assigned at birth. A transgender man is a person who was assigned female at birth, but identifies and lives as a man. A transgender woman is person who was assigned male at birth, but identifies and lives as a woman”. “Many transgender people are prescribed hormones by their doctors to change their bodies. Some undergo surgery as well. But not all transgender people can or will take
those steps, and a transgender identity is not dependent upon medical procedures”. (http:// w w w. g l a a d . o rg / t r a n s g e n d e r / trans101) (Transgender people should not be confused with gay, lesbian and crossdressers who fall into an entirely different category). Angel, assigned boy at birth, felt her girlhood in grade school. Most transgender individuals feel this difference at an early age. The sensational public transition of 5year old Ryland Whittington from girlhood to boyhood in May, 2014 prompted emotionally-charged approval from the transgender community and the passionate dismay of those who see it is a phase that kids outgrow. But transgender people disagree, after growing up into confused and depressed teenagers who get bullied at school or commit suicide because their parents refused to accept them for who they are. As adults, they faced widespread discrimination and, sadly, even homicide. The rise of transgender people in the fashion industry and mainstream television, along with their active efforts to educate the world, will slowly but surely help increase

acceptance of transgender people. “I'm fortunate to have family and friends who support me,” Angel says today. “I am true to myself and love who I am.” She advises closet transgender Filipinos (and non-Filipinos) to educate themselves, discover resources to help their transitions, and more importantly, learn who they really are to set the foundation for the life they want to live. “Surround yourself with people who love you and support you. Love yourself and things will fall into place in due time.” Angel Qinan is definitely on a roll. In addition to taking the fashion industry by storm, she's getting opportunities for commercial modeling and acting. “Last year I had no idea I might reach this point in my life,” Angel muses. “So much has changed so fast since I transitioned, and all of it leads to the materialization of my dreams.” Angel credits the Lord with all her blessings and hopes to inspire people through her continued success. She aspires to be the voice for anyone waiting to be heard. “What a lovely woman,” I whispered to myself as I left Angel Qinan--truly is a beautiful woman, inside and out.

DMV took steps to prepare including hiring 900 new employees, adding Saturday office hours, extending current office hours, opening four new offices and doubling the appointment window from 45 to 90 days. Since January 2, 2015, DMV has issued 79,000 new driver licenses under AB 60 and administered approximately 523,000 written and behind-the-wheel exams. In addition to those efforts, the DMV is taking action to further expand appointment opportunities for the customers who need to visit a DMV office to renew a driver

DMV has found that about 25 percent of applicants for a new driver license are not showing up to appointments and will be making those additional appointments available to all DMV customers. DMV will also increase the number of available Saturday appointments at 60 field offices across California. Customers should expect to see new appointment opportunities between the hours of noon and 5:00 p.m. on Saturdays. Since the first week of AB 60 implementation, the statewide average wait time for all customers with appointments has fallen 56 percent from 32 minutes to 14 minutes. Average wait time for walk-in customers have fallen 30 percent from 90 to 60 minutes. Of course, these are statewide av-

1. Registration Renewal: Californians do not need to visit the DMV to renew registration because they can renew by mail, online, by phone, using a Self-Service Terminal, or visiting a DMV Business Partner or Auto Club. Be sure to complete any required smog inspection before renewing the registration. 2. Address Change: Californians do not need to visit the DMV to report a change of address because customers can easily
get a driver or vehicle record because those records can be ordered online at dmv.ca.gov. 5. Most Driver License Renewals: Most customers will not need to visit a DMV to renew a driver license because a new photo is only required every 15 years. Check the DMV notice carefully because most of the time customers will be able to quickly renew a driver license online, by mail, or by calling 1-800-777-0133.
