TRANSITIONS The difference between the Classical and the Romantic often appears as a very clear stereotype in almost everyone’s consciousness: form versus freedom, strictness versus frankness, intellect versus passion. However, even disregarding the fact that Classicism was never without true feelings, the real transformation to Romanticism was much more subtle and hidden in the smallest details of the well-composed, transparent architecture of the music of the Classical period.

The programme of this recording (apart from the great value of each piece itself) depicts the rebellious and yet very tender metamorphosis between the two ‘states’ of art – Classical and Romantic. The three composers – Beethoven, Dussek, and Mendelssohn – stand at the crossroads of the two styles, despite the forty years that separate the pieces. The composers give their works the names of Classical forms, but their content quite exceeds the limits of the Classical sonata or variations. Without doubt one of the key figures in the development of Romantic wings in music was Ludwig van Beethoven. The Bagatelles op.33, a work of the mature composer written with the most exquisite Classical grace and almost

The reciprocal influence of both styles created numerous transitions, intertwining with each other and covering not only the abstract element of the art of music, but also its mechanical embodiment – the instruments. In trying to keep up with the wildly developing fortepiano music of the time, the instrument makers were inspired to create a constant stream of new models. Decades of experiment led to a situation in which there were very few fortepianos that closely resembled each other. My personal choice of two original Viennese instruments was not based so much on criteria of historical correctness, although both instruments

Jan Ladislav Dussek, whose style, I would say, is the most elusive, writes his Sonata op.61 Elégie Harmonique sur la Mort de Son Altesse Royale le Prince Louis Ferdinand de Prusse in two movements, both of them full of sincere and intense emotions. Not a solemn tombeau, but a relentless and very personal lamentation. The Variations sérieuses were composed

by Felix Mendelssohn, probably the most Classical among the Romantic composers, in homage to Ludwig van Beethoven. This set of fully Romantic variations was intended as a bridge between the ‘serious’ Beethoven style and the brilliant and virtuoso style that had already become overwhelmingly popular by that time. As for op.111, the last Beethoven sonata, it is not difficult to find the elusive features of several musical styles; however, the piece transcends any style one can imagine.

perfectly match the repertoire in terms of period. Just as the Classical forms could accommodate the Romantic tendencies of the music, these instruments, in possession of great clarity of sound, uncover immense timbral possibilities, allowing one to play with the rhetoric as much as with the colours. The 1812 fortepiano by Donat Schöfftos – stepson of the celebrated Anton Walter – enchanted me immediately with the ambiguity of its magical voice. Its sound is as charming for the fine lines of the Beethoven bagatelles as for the gloomy and passionate moments of the Dussek sonata. The Conrad Graf of 1826 with a surprisingly viscous, yet extremely vulnerable action permits a very special adventurousness in the Beethoven op.111 and the Mendelssohn variations.

The butterfly of Romanticism spreads its wings and rises, but who knows, maybe the combination of Classical objectivity and Romantic flights of fancy is the perfect balance ?

NOTES ON THE PROGRAMME Jan Ladislav Dussek, born Václav Jan Dusík in Prague ten years before Beethoven, was one of a number of travelling keyboard virtuosos active in the late eighteenth century. His colourful career took him successively to the Netherlands, Hamburg, Russia (under the patronage of Catherine the Great), Lithuania, Germany, Paris (where he became a favourite of Marie Antoinette), Milan, London (for eleven years, 1789-99), then back to Germany and finally Paris once more. His large output, most of it for the piano alone or in various chamber and concertante combinations, includes thirty-five solo piano sonatas. One of the last of these was the Sonata op.61, Élégie Harmonique sur la Mort de Son Altesse Royale le Prince Louis Ferdinand de Prusse, written in 1806-07. A prefatory note in the first edition informs us: ‘His Royal Highness Prince Louis Ferdinand of Prussia was killed at the battle of Saalfeld on 10 October 1806. The author, who had the pleasure of enjoying a close relationship with HRH, took leave of him only at the moment when he shed his precious blood for his homeland.’ Louis Ferdinand (1772-1806), a nephew of Frederick the Great, was both a fearless soldier and an outstanding pianist who also composed for his instrument. Dussek had given him lessons in Hamburg and was his Kapellmeister from October 1804 until his death, travelling in the prince’s entourage from one battlefield to another. His ‘Elegy’ has no specific programme but movingly expresses the composer’s feelings of grief (shared by many in Germany) in the rare and intense key of F-sharp minor (also that of Haydn’s ‘Farewell’ Symphony, no.45). After a powerful,

fantasia-like slow introduction (Lento patetico) full of unexpected modulations and pathetic diminished chords, it moves into a faster Tempo agitato with the characteristic dotted rhythm of the funeral march, although this is soon enveloped in virtuoso figuration. The second movement, faster still (Tempo Vivace e con fuoco quasi Presto), makes constant use of chromaticisms and unsettling syncopations, which persist (moving from right hand to left) even in the sempre dolce central section in the tonic major, G flat. Only right at the end is there a consolatory gesture as the music dies away over a tierce de Picardie.

Prince Louis Ferdinand provides a link with Beethoven, for the two men thought highly of each other and the composer dedicated his Third Piano Concerto to the prince in 1804. More or less contemporary with this work is the first of Beethoven’s three sets of Bagatelles, op.33, written in 1801-02 and published in 1803. If Dussek’s Sonata looks forward to Romanticism in its harmonic and pianistic language, these brief ‘trifles’ too, though still eminently Classical in style, foreshadow one of the key genres of the Romantic era, the ‘character piece’. They were not originally intended to be played or published together, but Beethoven clearly selected them among the ‘shavings from his workbench’, probably deriving from sketches or improvisations, to form a plausible entity with contrasting moments of lyricism and humour. All of them are in ternary form (ABA’), the model being either the song or the scherzo, and one of the most fascinating things about them is the composer’s consummate skill in ring-

Beethoven was to return to the bagatelle in the 1820s, and his last published work for piano was the op.126 set. By that time he had already completed his cycle of thirty-two sonatas with op.111, composed in 1821-22 and published in 1823 with a dedication to another noble pupil and patron, Archduke Rudolph of Austria. It would be presumptuous here to attempt an analysis of this work, which has been discussed at length by every distinguished commentator on the composer, including many eminent pianists and no less a figure than Thomas Mann in Doctor Faustus. Unlike most of Beethoven’s sonatas (but like Dussek’s recorded here), it has only two movements, a fact that prompted the publisher Schlesinger to inquire if the engraver had not forgotten the finale! However, as has often been observed, these two movements balance each other so perfectly that a third would be inconceivable. For Edwin Fischer, the first, in Beethoven’s turbulent C minor vein, symbolises the hard struggle of earthly life, while the Arietta with its variations ending in impalpable trills represents transcendental experience.

owed to the ‘Master of Bonn’ who had shown the way to individual expression. So, when the proposal was made to erect a monument to the composer in his native city, they rallied round to support it. Schumann wrote a work that eventually became his Fantasy in C; Liszt made a very generous donation of 10,000 francs and composed a cantata for the inauguration of the statue and the Beethoven Hall (which finally took place in 1845); and Mendelssohn offered the work recorded here, the Variations sérieuses, for a fund-raising album published in Vienna in 1842. Their ‘serious’ nature is to be understood both as a reaction to the superficial ‘variations brillantes’ so popular at the time and as a reference to the stern, rigorous style found in such Beethoven works as the ‘Quartetto serioso’ op.95. Mendelssohn adds to the unbending seriousness by clearly referencing his other musical hero, Bach, in the chorale-like nature of the chromatically inflected theme and by closing the work with a solemn plagal cadence in the tonic D minor rather than turning to the major to offer a facile conclusion. Indeed, just one of the seventeen variations, the Adagio no.14, is in the major key. Nevertheless, his masterly handling of the theme displays immense variety and enormous pianistic resourcefulness, from the scherzo of Variations 8-9 to the fugato of Variation 10 and the Schumannesque cantabile of Variation 11 (the work was in fact premiered by Clara Schumann, who played it throughout her subsequent career), and the Presto coda provides all the ‘brilliance’ any pianist or audience could desire.

OLGA PASHCHENKO Olga Pashchenko was born in Moscow in 1986, and began her musical studies at the age of six at the Myaskovsky Music School (piano class of Sofia Genis). In 1993 she won a prize at the All-Russian Young Pianists’ Competition, and entered the Moscow Special Gnessin Music School where she studied piano with Tatiana Zelikman and harpsichord with Olga Martynova. She gave her first piano recital in New York at the age of nine. In 2002 she was granted a scholarship by the Russian Performance Art Foundation. In 2003 she was a prizewinner at the Third International Gnessin Young Artists Competition and the Third International Beethoven Festival of Chamber Music.

In 2005 Olga Pashchenko graduated with honours from the Gnessin School and entered the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory. In 2010 she graduated with honours from the Department of Historical and Modern Art Performance, where she studied with Professor Alexei Lubimov (piano) and Professor Olga Martynova (harpsichord, fortepiano), as well as from the Organ Department (class of Alexei Shmitov). In 2010 Olga Pashchenko entered the postgraduate course at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory (class of Professor Alexei Lubimov, research supervisor: D.Mus.A. Konstantin Zenkin). In 2011 she entered the Amsterdam Conservatory where she is currently studying fortepiano and harpsichord with Richard Egarr.

Olga Paschchenko is a prizewinner at several international music competitions. Recently she won the First International Fortepiano Competition Schloss Kremsegg (2011), the International Hans von Bulow Piano Competition (2012, First prize and Special prize for the best performance of pieces by Chopin), and the International Fortepiano Competition Premio Ferrari (2012, First Prize).

Olga Pashchenko has attended master classes led by Bart van Oort, Bob van Asperen, Trevor Pinnock, Malcolm Bilson, Davitt Moroney, Andreas Staier, Christine Schornsheim, Ludger Lohmann, Christopher Stembridge, and others. She also performs regularly as a harpsichordist, pianist, organist and fortepianist in concert halls all over the world (Russia, Belarus, Italy, USA, Austria, Belgium, France, Germany), and has played as a guest at such festivals as Seiler Festival (Germany), Poeke Fortepiano Festival (Belgium), Karlsruhe (Germany), Florence (Project of the Harvard University Centre for Renaissance Studies at Villa I Tatti), Utrecht Oude Muziek Festival (Holland), Sankt Gallen Festival (Austria), New Horizons Festival in St Petersburg (Russia), St Petersburg International Piano Festival (Russia), Soli Deo Gloria Festival, and Mostra Fortepiano Bergamo (Italy). TRANSITIONS La différence entre le Classique et le Romantique est souvent présente dans la conscience collective sous la forme d’un stéréotype très clair : forme versus liberté, précision versus franchise, intellect versus passion.

Cependant, même en faisant abstraction du fait que le classicisme n’a jamais été exempt de vrais sentiments, la réelle transformation vers le romantisme est beaucoup plus subtile et cachée dans les moindres détails de l’architecture transparente et bien composée de la musique de la période classique.

Outre la grande valeur de chaque pièce, l’intérêt du programme de cet enregistrement est de dépeindre la métamorphose révolutionnaire et pourtant très tendre entre les deux « états » de l’art – le classique et le romantique. Les trois compositeurs – Beethoven, Dussek et Mendelssohn – se situent au croisement de deux styles, malgré les quarante années qui séparent leurs œuvres. Les compositeurs donnent à leurs œuvres les noms de formes classiques, mais leur contenu dépasse toutes les limites de la sonate ou des variations classiques. Ludwig van Beethoven est sans doute l’une des figures clés du développement du romantisme.

L’influence réciproque des deux styles a créé de nombreuses transitions qui se mêlent les unes aux autres et couvrent non seulement l’élément abstrait de l’art de la musique, mais aussi son mode de réalisation mécanique : les instruments. En essayant de faire face aux développements frénétiques de la musique pour pianoforte à l’époque, les facteurs d’instruments ont été à la source d’un flux constant de nouveaux modèles. Des

Les Bagatelles op. 33, que le compositeur écrit avec la grâce classique la plus exquise et un geste presque baroque, dissimulent par-ci par-là des surprises harmoniques tout à fait inattendues du type de celle que l’on rencontrera souvent plus tard, à l’époque de Liszt. Jan Ladislav Dussek, dont le style est le plus élusif, écrit sa Sonate op. 61, Élégie Harmonique sur la Mort de Son Altesse Royale le Prince Louis Ferdinand de Prusse, en deux mouvements, tous deux pleins d’émotions sincères et intenses.

Ce n’est pas un tombeau solennel, mais bien une lamentation incessante et très personnelle. Les Variations sérieuses sont composées par Felix Mendelssohn, probablement le plus classique des compositeurs romantiques, en hommage à Ludwig van Beethoven. Cette série de variations totalement romantiques est conçue comme un pont entre le style « sérieux » de Beethoven et le style brillant et virtuose déjà extrêmement populaire à cette époque. En ce qui concerne l’op. 111, la dernière sonate de Beethoven, il n’est pas difficile d’y trouver les caractéristiques insaisissables de plusieurs styles musicaux ; cependant, la pièce transcende tous les styles imaginables.

Mon choix personnel de deux instruments viennois originaux n’est pas vraiment basé sur des critères d’exactitude historique, mais les deux instruments correspondent parfaitement au répertoire en termes de période. Tout comme les formes classiques peuvent contenir les tendances romantiques de la musique, ces instruments, qui possèdent une grande clarté de son, découvrent d’immenses possibilités de timbres, permettant de jouer avec la rhétorique aussi bien qu’avec les couleurs. Le pianoforte construit en 1812 par Donat Schöfftos – le gendre du célèbre Anton Walter – m’a immédiatement enchantée par l’ambiguïté de sa voix magique. Sa sonorité est aussi flatteuse pour les lignes raffinées des bagatelles de Beethoven que pour les moments sombres et passionnés de la sonate de Dussek. Le Conrad Graf de 1826, avec sa personnalité étonnamment dense mais aussi très vulnérable, permet un côté aventureux très spécial dans l’op. 111 de Beethoven et dans les variations de Mendelssohn.

Le papillon du romantisme déploie ses ailes et s’élève mais, qui sait, peut-être la combinaison de l’objectivité classique et des élans de fantaisie romantique est-elle la balance parfaite…

NOTES SUR LE PROGRAMME Jan Ladislav Dussek, né Václav Jan Dusík à Prague dix ans avant Beethoven, fit partie de ces virtuoses du clavier péripatétiques qui faisaient le tour de l’Europe à la fin du XVIIIe siècle. Une carrière riche en rebondissements le mena successivement aux Pays-Bas, à Hambourg, en Russie (sous le patronage de Catherine II), en Lituanie, en Allemagne, à Paris (où il devint l’un des musiciens préférés de Marie Antoinette), à Milan, à Londres (pendant onze ans, de 1789 à 1799), puis de nouveau en Allemagne et enfin à Paris. Sa production importante, consacrée essentiellement au clavier, seul ou dans diverses formations chambristes ou concertantes, comprend notamment trente-cinq sonates pour piano seul. L’une des dernières est la Sonate opus 61, Élégie Harmonique sur la Mort de Son Altesse Royale le Prince Louis Ferdinand de Prusse, écrite en 1806-1807. Une note en tête de la première édition (dans un français quelque peu germanique) nous informe : « Son Altesse Royale le Prince Louis Ferdinand de Prusse a été tué à l’affaire [la bataille] de Saalfeld le 10 ème Octobre 1806. L’auteur, qui a eu le bonheur, de jouir du commerce tres-intime de S. A. R., ne l’a quitté qu’au moment, où il a versé son precieux sang pour sa patrie. » Louis Ferdinand (1772-1806), neveu de Frédéric le Grand, fut à la fois un soldat intrépide et un pianiste exceptionnel qui composait lui-même pour son instrument. Après lui avoir dispensé des cours à Hambourg, Dussek devint son Kapellmeister d’octobre 1804 jusqu’à la mort du prince, voyageant dans son entourage d’un champ de bataille à l’autre. Son Élégie ne possède aucun programme pré-

cis, mais exprime de manière émouvante le deuil du compositeur (très largement partagé en Allemagne) dans la tonalité rare et intense de fa dièse mineur qui est également celle de la Symphonie « des Adieux » de Haydn, n°45. Après une puissante introduction lente (Lento patetico) à l’allure de fantaisie, regorgeant de modulations inattendues et d’accords diminués pathétiques, survient un Tempo agitato plus rapide, au rythme pointé caractéristique de la marche funèbre, même si celui-ci est bientôt enveloppé de figurations virtuoses. Le deuxième mouvement, plus rapide encore (Tempo Vivace e con fuoco quasi Presto), déploie sans cesse des chromatismes et des syncopes troublantes, qui persistent (passant de la main droite à la gauche) même dans la partie centrale à la tonique majeure, sol bémol, pourtant marquée sempre dolce. Ce n’est qu’à l’extrême fin qu’on trouve un geste de réconfort, au moment où la musique s’éteint sur une tierce picarde.

Le prince Louis Ferdinand nous permet de faire la transition avec Beethoven, car les deux hommes s’admiraient mutuellement et le compositeur dédia son Troisième Concerto pour piano au prince en 1804. Cette œuvre est plus ou moins contemporaine du premier des trois recueils de Bagatelles de Beethoven, son opus 33, composé en 1801-1802 et publié en 1803. Si la Sonate de Dussek semble lorgner vers le romantisme dans son écriture harmonique et pianistique, ces brefs morceaux que le compositeur qualifia de « Kleinigkeiten », bien que de style éminemment classique, préfigurent pour leur part l’un des genres clés de l’ère roman-

Beethoven devait revenir à la composition de bagatelles aux années 1820 – sa dernière œuvre pianistique publiée fut le recueil opus 126. Entretemps, il avait déjà terminé son cycle de trente-deux sonates avec l’opus 111 écrite en 1821-1822 et publiée en 1823 avec une dédicace à un autre élève et mécène aristocratique : l’archiduc Rodolphe d’Autriche. Il serait présomptueux de s’essayer ici à une analyse de cette œuvre, qui a déjà été commentée dans le détail par tous les éminents exégètes du compositeur, dont de nombreux pianistes distingués, sans parler de Thomas Mann dans Le Docteur Faustus. À la différence de la plupart des sonates de Beethoven (mais à l’instar de celle de Dussek qui figure ici), elle ne

Ils n’étaient pas prévus à l’origine pour être joués ou publiés ensemble, mais Beethoven les a de toute évidence sélectionnés parmi les « copeaux de son atelier », issus sans doute d’esquisses ou d’improvisations, de façon à former un tout convaincant avec ses moments contrastés de lyrisme et d’humour. Toutes les bagatelles sont de forme ternaire (ABA’), prenant modèle soit sur le lied, soit sur le scherzo, et l’un des aspects les plus fascinants de ces pièces est l’exceptionnelle maîtrise dont fait preuve le compositeur en variant ce schéma de base. De la grâce de la Bagatelle n°1 aux basses tonitruantes et aux aigus capricieux de la n°7, en passant par les rayonnantes textures chambristes de la Quatrième ou la brillante figuration en doubles croches de la Cinquième, le recueil résume parfaitement toute la portée du langage beethovénien aux alentours de 1800.

Cependant, comme on l’a souvent fait remarquer, ces deux mouvements s’équilibrent de façon si parfaite qu’un troisième serait inconcevable. Pour Edwin Fischer, le premier mouvement, dans la veine turbulente typique de Beethoven en do mineur, symboliserait la lutte acharnée de la vie terrestre, alors que l’Arietta, avec ses variations qui se terminent en trilles impalpables, représenterait l’expérience transcendantale.

Quelques années après la mort de Beethoven, le romantisme en musique était en plein essor et ses adeptes avaient à cœur d’afficher leur dette commune envers le « Maître de Bonn » qui avait montré la voie à l’expression individuelle. Ainsi, lorsqu’on proposa d’ériger un monument au compositeur dans sa ville natale, ils se mobilisèrent tous pour soutenir le projet. Schumann écrivit une œuvre qui allait devenir in fine sa Fantaisie en do majeur ; Liszt fit un don très généreux de 10.000 francs et composa une cantate pour l’inauguration de la statue et de la Salle Beethoven (qui eut lieu finalement en 1845) ; et Mendelssohn offrit les Variations sérieuses enregistrées ici pour un album destiné à recueillir des fonds et publié à Vienne en 1842. La nature « sérieuse » de l’œuvre s’entend à la fois comme réaction aux superficielles « variations brillantes » si populaires à l’époque et comme référence au style sévère et rigoureux que l’on trouve dans certaines compositions beethovéniennes telles le « Quartetto serioso » op.95. en faisant allusion à son autre héros musical, Bach, de par le caractère de choral du thème avec ses inflexions chromatiques, et en terminant l’œuvre par une cadence plagale solennelle à la tonique de ré mineur plutôt que de se tourner vers le mode majeur pour proposer une conclusion de facilité. D’ailleurs, on notera qu’une seule des dix-sept variations, l’Adagio n°14, est de tonalité majeure. Néanmoins, le traitement magistral du thème montre une variété immense et une remarquable ingéniosité pianistique, comme par exemple dans le scherzo des Variations 8 à 9, le fugato de la Variation 10 ou le cantabile schumannien de la Variation 11 (de fait, l’œuvre fut créée par Clara Schumann, qui la maintint à son répertoire tout au long de sa carrière). Quant à la coda (Presto), elle manifeste tout le « brillant » que pourrait souhaiter n’importe quel pianiste ou public.

OLGA PASHCHENKO Olga Pashchenko naît à Moscou en 1986 et entame ses études musicales à l’âge de six ans à l’école de musique Myaskovsky, dans la classe de piano de Sofia Genis. En 1993, elle remporte un prix au Concours des jeunes pianistes de toute la Russie et entre à l’école spéciale de musique Gnessin à Moscou, où elle étudie le piano avec Tatiana Zelikman et le clavecin avec Olga Martynova. Elle donne son premier récital de piano à New York à l’âge de neuf ans. En 2002, elle obtient une bourse de la Fondation russe pour les Arts du spectacle. En 2003, elle est lauréate du troisième Concours international Gnessin pour les jeunes artistes et le troisième Festival international Beethoven de musique de chambre.

En 2005, Olga Pashchenko sort diplômée avec mention de l’école Gnessin et entre au Conservatoire d’Etat Tchaikovsky de Moscou. En 2010, elle sort également diplômée avec mention du Département des Arts du spectacle historiques et modernes, où elle a étudié avec Alexei Lubimov (piano) et Olga Martynova (clavecin, pianoforte), ainsi que du département d’orgue (classe d’Alexei Shmitov). En 2010, elle entame un troisième cycle au Conservatoire Tchaikovsky de Moscou (classe d’Alexei Lubimov ; directeur de recherches : Dr. Konstantin Zenkin). En 2011, elle entre au Conservatoire d’Amsterdam où elle étudie actuellement le pianoforte et le clavecin avec Richard Egarr.

Olga Pashchenko a participé à des master classes dirigées entre autres par Bart van Oort, Bob van Asperen, Trevor Pinnock, Malcolm Bilson, Davitt Moroney, Andreas Staier, Christine Schornsheim, Ludger Lohmann et Christopher Stembridge. Elle se produit régulièrement comme claveciniste, pianiste, organiste et pianofortiste dans des salles de concert partout dans le monde (Russie, Belarus, Italie, Etats-Unis, Autriche, Belgique, France, Allemagne) et a été l’invitée de nombreux festivals : Festival Seiler (Allemagne), Festival Poeke de pianoforte (Belgique), Karlsruhe (Allemagne), Florence (projet du Centre d’études de la Renaissance de l’Université de Harvard à la Villa I Tatti), Festival Utrecht Oude Muziek (Pays-Bas), Festival Sankt Gallen (Autriche), Festival New Horizons de Saint-Pétersbourg (Russie), Festival international de piano de Saint-Pétersbourg (Russie), Festival Soli Deo Gloria et Mostra Fortepiano Bergamo (Italie). Olga Paschchenko est laureate de plusieurs concours internationaux de musique. Récemment, elle a remporté le premier Concours international de pianoforte de Schloss Kremsegg (2011), le Concours international de piano Hans von Bulow (2012, premier prix et prix spécial de la meilleure interprétation des oeuvres de Chopin) et le Concours international de pianoforte Premio Ferrari (2012, premier prix).

SCHLOSS KREMSEGG – HAUS DER KULTUR Le Musée des Instruments de musique est fondé en 1996 dans le village de Kremsmünster. Au château de Kremsegg, le paysage muséal de HauteAutriche rencontre le paysage musical de Haute-Autriche, créant un croisement unique. Les caractéristiques spatiales du château offrent un cadre unique aux collections du musée ainsi qu’aux expositions permanentes. Avec sa multitude de programmes culturels, Schloss Kremsegg est un véritable centre d’excellence musicale. La philosophie d’utiliser des instruments pour la recherche sonore place Kremsegg au premier rang de la muséologie internationale.

Le développement des collections est l’une des missions les plus importantes du musée. En 2001, la collection de pianos du pianiste Paul Badura-Skoda rejoint la collection du musée, créant l’impressionnant « Clavierland ». Plus de 200 ans de facture de pianos y sont représentés par des instruments prêts à jouer. La collection surprend le public : les trésors peuvent être explorés avec les yeux, les mains et les oreilles.

Une attention particulière est accordée aux pianofortes. Là-bas, le visiteur trouvera des exemples d’instruments construits par les meilleurs facteurs viennois – dont Bösendorfer, Streicher et Graf – ainsi que par Steinway, Bechstein et Érard, parmi d’autres.
