To celebrate the inauguration of the newly restored former organ of the Palais du Trocadéro and Palais de Chaillot in Paris, the Orchestre National de Lyon and their organist-in-residence, Vincent Warnier, present two major works for organ and orchestra by Camille SaintSaëns, both of which are historically linked with the great CavailléColl organs. The composer himself conducted the French première of Cyprès et Lauriers at the Trocadéro in October 1920, entrusting the solo part to Eugène Gigout.

Supplementary Promotional Materials • Podcast • Key release kit • Artist profile Companion Titles

Sales Points: The organ is the focus of this disc, which is performed on the famous, monumental and newly restored 1878 instrument formerly in the Trocadéro in Paris but now in Lyon. Three works are involved. Cyprés et Lauriers is rare on disc. Stefan Johannes Bleicher’s 4-CD set devoted to the organ music on Arte Nova (in 2006) includes it. Ian Tracey couples it with a work by Dupré on Chandos, whereas Ben van Oosten couples it with other of the composer’s works for solo organ for MDG in 2012. The arrangement of the Danse macabre is a sonic spectacular for solo organ. The Symphony No.3 is one of the most famous and brilliant in the repertoire, and frequently recorded, and which also features the organ prominently.

An outstanding figure in the history of modern Spanish music, Federico Moreno Torroba is best known for his guitar works, his traditional style embracing the folklore and character of Spain. The Concierto en Flamenco requires an exceptional soloist, and Pepe Romero is justly famous for his masterful interpretations in both classical and flamenco genres. The playful Diálogos entre guitarra y orquesta adds the luminous sonorities of harp and celesta to its colourful orchestration. Aires de la Mancha is evocative of this distinctive region in central Spain, while the Suite castellana includes Torroba’s first ever composition for guitar, Danza. This is the first of three volumes of Torroba’s complete works for guitar and orchestra.

Sales Points: The rarely heard Concierto en Flamenco is the jewel in the crown of this fine new release of concertos and solos for guitar by the ever popular Federico Moreno Torroba. Combining specialist flamenco techniques with a classical concerto form, we are proud to be able to present the legendary Pepe Romero as soloist. This pairing with the substantial Diálogos entre guitarra y orquesta, Torroba’s early Suite castellana, and another Pepe Romero performance in the characterful Aires de la Mancha make this a feast for fans of the guitar and the best of 20th century Spanish music. This release also compliments our previous CD with the guitar music of Torroba on Naxos 8.557902

Manuel Coves

One of the most celebrated and versatile musicians of his generation, the Spanish-born guitarist Pepe Romero has enjoyed a varied and illustrious career. Among other honours, Pepe Romero has been knighted into the Order of Isabel la Católica, awarded an honorary doctorate in music from the University of Victoria, and the Premio Andalucía de Música, the highest recognition given by his native land for contribution to the arts. The classical guitarist Vicente Coves

studied with the legendary Pepe Romero. Coves belongs to the Versus Ensemble, with which he recorded for Naxos Piazzolla’s Suite María de Buenos Aires (8.570523) and Lorenzo Palomo’s Sinfonía a Granada (8.570420), for soprano guitar and orchestra, composed for Vicente Coves and María Bayo. In 2008 he was awarded the Rubinstein Medal by the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory.

Sir Peter MAXWELL DAVIES (b. 1934) Caroline Mathilde – Ballet Suites © John Batten

Chat Moss • Ojai Festival Overture

BBC Philharmonic Orchestra • Sir Peter Maxwell Davies Sir Peter Maxwell Davies’ ballet Caroline Mathilde premièred in 1991 and has been highly acclaimed ever since. Its story concerns the tragic marriage of Caroline to Christian VII of Denmark and is cast in a musical language that embraces expressionism, drama, parody, and overt lyricism. The two concert suites chart the young queen’s fall from grace and her eventual banishment into exile. Chat Moss is a richly textured tone poem, while by contrast the Ojai Festival Overture is a lively and extrovert concert piece reflecting Maxwell Davies’ fondness for American landscape and culture.

Sales Points: These are ex-Collins releases recorded in the 1990s, though originally differently coupled. This disc, in fact, is the last of the Collins reissues. The concert suite from Caroline Mathilde was coupled with Beltane Fire, for instance, and the Ojai Festival Overture with the popular and riotous Mavis in Las Vegas and An Orkney Wedding with Sunrise on Collins 1524. The trio of pieces offer very different pleasures. The ballet Caroline Mathilde is a modern classic, presented in two concert suites, very lyrical and standing in the great tradition of ballet scores from the nineteenth-century onwards, spiced with Maxwell Davies’ personal vocabulary. Chat Moss is a tone poem and the Ojai Festival Overture is extrovert and colourful.

Universally acknowledged as one of the foremost composers of our time, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies has made a significant contribution to musical history through his wide-ranging and prolific output. In a work list spanning more than five decades, he has written across a broad range of styles, yet his music always communicates directly and powerfully, whether in his profoundly argued symphonic works, his music-theatre works or witty light orchestral works. His substantial chamber and instrumental catalogue includes the landmark cycle of ten string quartets, the Naxos Quartets (8.505225), described in the Financial Times as “one of the most impressive musical statements of our time”. Maxwell Davies has held the position of composerConductor with both the Royal Philharmonic and BBC Philharmonic Orchestras. Maxwell Davies was knighted in 1987 and appointed Master of the Queen’s Music in 2004.

Jordi Masó

Joaquín TURINA (1882–1949) Piano Music, Vol. 10

Jordi Masó studied with Josep M. Roger, Albert Attenelle, and at the Royal Academy of Music of London with Christopher Elton and Nelly Akopian, graduating in 1992 with the highest distinction. He has won first prize in many National and International competitions in Spain and has performed extensively. Jordi Masóʼs wide repertoire, covering all periods and styles, with special emphasis on music of the twentieth century, has brought first performances of many piano works written for him. He has made over forty recordings, including the 1993 world première of the complete works for piano of Roberto Gerhard (8.223867), the complete piano music by Frederic Mompou (8.554332, 8.554448, 8.554727, 8.554727, 8.570956, 8.572142), and Joaquín Turina (8.557150, 8.557438, 8.557684, 8.570026, 8.570370, 8.572141, 8.572455, 8.572682, 8.572915).

El Castillo de Almodóvar Rincones de Sanlúcar • Tocata y fuga Partita • Preludios • Pieza romántica Jordi Masó, Piano

The tenth volume in Jordi Masó’s ground-breaking series of the complete piano music focuses on the years of Joaquín Turina’s maturity and the works he called a Ciclo pianístico. El castillo de Almodóvar (Almodóvar Castle) and Rincones de Sanlúcar (Corners of Sanlúcar) are both memorably evocative and descriptive. Elsewhere Turina takes classic forms, such as the toccata, fugue, partita and prelude and brings to them a more abstract but richly nuanced sensibility. The previous volume in this series has brought considerable acclaim: ‘In Masó you have an ideally committed and affectionate master of the idiom, finely recorded.’ (Gramophone, on 8.572915)

Companion Titles

Sales Points: This is volume 10 in this comprehensive Turina series. The last volume (8.572915) was very well received with both American Record Guide and Gramophone extolling the virtues of the playing (”an affectionate master of the idiom” wrote Gramophone). This disc concentrates on Turina’s maturity with music that is often abstract, though there are also his famous more colourful evocations as well. This is sparsely recorded repertoire. The famous figure of Alicia de Larrocha has recorded the Preludios and Partita but they are marooned in a big DG 10-CD box. Likewise Martin Jones has recorded El castillo de Almodóvar, but in the context of a 5-CD box of Spanish piano music generally. Masó is generally considered the world’s leading current exponent of this composer’s music.

JoAnn Falleta

Jack GALLAGHER (b. 1947) Symphony No. 2 ‘Ascendant’ Quiet Reflections

London Symphony Orchestra • JoAnn Falletta Jack Gallagher continues his association with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by JoAnn Falletta with Symphony No. 2 ‘Ascendant,’ a robust, colorful work of dramatic contrasts and expansive architecture that seeks to express the aspirations and strivings of the human spirit. Quiet Reflections is a calm, serenely lyrical meditation which evokes a sense of longing for past tranquility. Gallagher’s previous Naxos release Orchestral Music (8.559652) with the LSO conducted by JoAnn Falletta was awarded five stars by BBC Music Magazine and hailed as “fresh and exuberant” and for “its explosions of sound and colour” by Gramophone.

JoAnn Falletta, acclaimed by The New York Times as “one of the finest conductors of her generation”, serves as the music director of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and Virginia Symphony Orchestra, and principal conductor of the Ulster Orchestra in Belfast, Northern Ireland. She has guest conducted more than a hundred orchestras in North America and many of the most prominent orchestras in Europe, Asia, South America, and Africa, such as the London Symphony Orchestra, which is widely regarded as one of the world’s leading orchestras. Falletta is an ardent champion of music of our time, introducing over 500 works by American composers, including more than 110 world premières. Her extensive Naxos discography includes a double GRAMMY® Award-winning volume of works by John Corigliano and GRAMMY®-nominated discs by Fuchs, Gershwin, Holst, Respighi, Strauss, and Schubert.

Sales Points: The release of Jack Gallagher’s Orchestral Music (8.559652) in 2010 aroused a great deal of interest, with Audiophile Audition describing his Symphony in One Movement: Threnody “truly a work of genius”, Gramophone summing it up as “fresh and exuberant, Jack Gallagher’s music speaks proudly of his country’s cultural values in positive, eloquent and healthy ways... The LSO couldn’t sound finer”. Furthermore “the programme gets Rolls-Royce treatment from JoAnn Falletta and the London Symphony Orchestra” (BBC Music Magazine), and Gallagher is “one of JoAnn Falletta’s best discoveries in her continual search for underrated American composers” (Buffalo News). Composed between 2010 and 2013 and recorded here by GRAMMY® winning producer Tim Handley, the second symphony stands as a vitally energetic continuation of this success.

Musical Treasures from the Early Habsburg Renaissance Ensemble Leones • Marc Lewon

The period of the early Habsburgs, from c.1340 to c.1520, saw the development of a richly diverse musical culture in the Austrian region. This pioneering selection, the product of an extensive research project conducted at the University of Vienna, presents an overview of music in everyday life, in many cases in première recordings performed by Ensemble Leones. The music is sacred and secular, allowing the listener to eavesdrop on Tyrolean palaces, dance halls and bourgeois homes, and on the singer-poets who travelled the country where old local styles fused with the latest international fashions. Sales Points • This recording is the product of much specialist work at the University of Vienna, conducted as part of a research project called ‘Musical life of the Late Middle Ages in the Austrian Region’. It documents music of the early Habsburg period from around 1340 to c.1520. There are a number of world première recordings of recently discovered music as well as hitherto unknown pieces in this disc. Ensemble Leones have attempted in their performances to recreate the musical ethos of the time and are highly regarded specialists in this repertoire with several recordings to their name – composer Arvo Pärt has praised their performances!

Over the last 25 years the Amadeus Guitar Duo have consistently proved to be one of the world’s most exploratory and admired ensembles. Through their many international tours, recordings, and the symposium they established at Iserlohn in Germany, they have extended the repertoire for the duo and for guitar duo with orchestra. In this release, their inaugural one for Naxos, the programme ranges across the centuries from the magnificent arrangement of Handel’s Suite in G minor, HV 432, through music by the nineteenth-century guitar composer Johann Kaspar Mertz, to contemporary works including the brilliant and virtuosic Fantasie d’Oriente e d’Occidente by Carlo Domeniconi, which was given its world première by the duo. Sales Points: The Amadeus Guitar Duo consist of Dale Kavanagh and Thomas Kirchhoff, an internationally admired ensemble who have been performing and touring for 25 years. They have performed repertoire for both for the guitar duo and for two guitars and orchestra, and extended it through commissions and first performances. For example they gave the world premiere of Carlo Domeniconi’s Fantasie d’Oriente e d’Occidente, which they play in this disc. They mix original works with arrangements and transcriptions. This is their first disc to be released by Naxos. They have recorded extensively for Hänssler Classics, about one of which discs Fanfare noted; ‘and when Dale Kavanagh partners with Thomas Kirchoff to form the Amadeus Guitar Duo, one is treated to elegant ensemble work – full of flashy virtuosity where needed, but best characterized by its subtle innigkeit.’ Dale Kavanagh (Canada) and Thomas Kirchhoff (Germany) have been playing together since 1991 and have given more than 950 concerts in more than 50 European countries and North, Central and South America and Asia. Critics and audiences acknowledge the young musicians bubbling temperament in virtuoso recital, their highly sensitive creative ability in musical phrasing and articulation,

Ge GAN-RU (b. 1954) Shanghai Reminiscences

Recordings

Butterfly Overture

Royal Scottish National Orchestra • Tsung Yeh Born in Shanghai, now resident in Greater New York, Ge Gan-ru is one of China’s foremost composers. Very different from his previous exploration of the Western avant-garde, Shanghai Reminiscences is a warm and affecting evocation of “the street scenes and sounds” of Gan-ru’s childhood in pre-Cultural Revolution Shanghai, viewed through the lens of his adopted American traditions. Butterfly Overture is the composer’s symphonic tribute to a beloved teacher from his Shanghai Conservatory days. International Record Review described Ge Gan-ru’s string quartets (8.570603) as “Nothing short of contemporary masterpieces”.

8.570609

Sales Points • A resident of New York, Ge Gan-ru is recognized as China’s leading avant-garde composer and one of the most original voices of his generation. Our recording of three of his string quartets (8.570603) with the Modern Works quartet was an American Record Guide ‘Critic’s Choice’. It was also acclaimed as “a magnificent disc… The music is outstanding and deserves the widest possible audience” by International Record Review, while the New York Times considers that Ge Gan-ru’s music “deserves to be recognized alongside that of his betterknown compatriots like Bright Sheng and Tan Dun.” Shanghai Reminiscences is a departure from Ge Gan-ru’s engagement with the avant-garde lineage of John Cage and George Crumb, and while leaving aside more striking timbral effects this music will have a wide appeal, resonating with audiences more familiar with the populist works of Aaron Copland and Leonard Bernstein.

Violin Concerto No. 1 in D minor, Op. 3 Violin Concerto No. 5 in D major, Op. 7 Violin Concerto No. 9 in C major, Op. 17 Friedemann Eichhorn, Violin Jena Philharmonic Orchestra • Nicolás Pasquet

Pierre Rode’s concertos represent the full flowering of the French violin school, the origins of which can be traced back to his teacher Viotti’s arrival in Paris in 1782. Bold and youthful, the First Violin Concerto contrasts with the more pastoral and introspective moods of the Fifth Violin Concerto, while the Ninth was written during the composer’s stay in Russia. All three works share Rode’s signature finales which ‘sparkle with gracefulness, piquancy and impishness’. Performed using painstakingly prepared new editions, this is the third of five volumes containing all thirteen of Rode’s Violin Concertos.

8.572755

Playing Time: 76:27 7

47313 27557 1

Sales Points • This is the third in a set of four volumes of Pierre Rode’s complete Violin Concertos. It joins a first volume (8.570469) the “virtuoso fireworks” of which were admired by Fanfare: “There’s enough double-stopping, rapid runs, and bowing tricks to satisfy even the most insatiable appetites for hire-wire circus acts. But there is Friedemann also a depth and breadth to Rode’s muse, and a sophisticated air Eichhorn to his melodic invention that elicits a strong emotional response and strikes a genuine responsive chord.” Volume 2 (8.570767) was a MusicWeb International ‘Recording of the Month’, “hugely entertaining and satisfying for the listener.” Including première recordings and inventively reconstructed cadenzas and features of interpretation, all of these releases fill a crucial gap and represent a significant contribution to the violin concerto repertoire. This survey of British cello music focuses on three composers whose critical fortunes have never quite matched their undoubted musical gifts. William Wordsworth always displayed independence of mind and considerable melodic invention, and his cello works reflect a kinship with the music of Bartók and, later, Shostakovich. The short-lived William Busch is represented by his Suite, both a passionate oration and a brilliant dance. Much earlier in the twentieth century the prolific Josef Holbrooke composed a Fantasie-Sonata that is irresistibly lively and virtuosic.

47313 13617 9

Sales Points • This is an ex-British Music Society release [BMS436CD] issued in 2010. The disc will be of particular interest to collectors of British chamber music of the twentieth-century as it contains rare never-before recorded works. Wordsworth and Busch both wrote approachable music. The only other widely available Wordsworth is the recording of his Symphonies on Lyrita. Holbrooke is a somewhat earlier composer but better represented on disc on a wide variety of labels – CPO, Dutton, Cameo, Lyrita, Raphael Wallfisch Symposium etc. His music is also on Marco Polo and Naxos recorded his violin works on 8.572649. These performances of Wordsworth’s Sonata No.2 and Busch’s Suite are also on 8.571352, differently coupled with works by Leighton and Cooke. Companion Titles

Sir Charles Villiers STANFORD (1852–1924) Piano Trio No. 2 Piano Quartet No. 1*

David Adams, Viola* • Gould Piano Trio

© Chris Stock

One of Britain’s leading composers and educators of his day, Stanford considered chamber music an essential representation of ‘absolute music’. His mastery of extended instrumental forms truly comes of age in the First Piano Quartet, a work which breathes a confidence and fluency to rival Brahms. An adventurous harmonic palette distinguishes the Second Piano Trio, the Beethovenian pathos of its slow movement contrasting with the defiant turbulence of its cyclically related outer movements. The Gould Trio is ‘magnificently stylish’ (Gramophone) in their recording of Stanford’s First Piano Trio (8.572452).

Johann Sebastian BACH (1685–1750) The Well-Tempered Clavier Book II (24 Preludes and Fugues) Luc Beauséjour, Harpsichord

When Luc Beauséjour recorded Book I of the Well-tempered Clavier [8.55762526] he was hailed by International Piano for ‘his instinct for discovering exactly the right tempo; his playing is so natural’. He turns now to Book II of the Preludes and Fugues in all twenty-four keys, assembled for publication in 1742. A number of the pieces survive in earlier versions from previous decades, which Bach revised or transposed. Together with Book I, this constitutes one of the pinnacles of Western music. Sales Points • The Well-tempered Clavier is one of the greatest pieces in Western music. It has been recorded many times, and is here recorded on harpsichord – it’s often performed on piano. Luc Beauséjour recorded Book I of the Well-tempered Clavier a number of years ago and it has been quite a long wait until Book II. That earlier set was lavishly praised [8.557625-26]. Andrea ANTICO (c.1480-after 1538) Animoso mio desire

16th-Century Italian Keyboard Favourites Glen Wilson, Harpsichord

Andrea Antico was a printer from Dalmatia who obtained, through the first Medici Pope, Leo X, a monopoly on printing keyboard music. His 1517 collection of frottole – a quasi-rustic word meaning a deceitful, silly story – contains highly advanced, but textually corrupt arrangements of part-songs for keyboard made by an anonymous musician. This world première recording of the complete Frottole Intabulate incorporates a new edition by harpsichordist Glen Wilson. Sales Points • Frottola means a deceitful, silly story. They were wildly popular songs in the later part of the fifteenth and the first third of the sixteenth centuries. An anonymous musician arranged them for keyboard and they were then published by the printer Andrea Antico in 1517. The arrangements were radical for the time and the arranger succeeded in producing a real polyphonic keyboard style. Some were performed by organist Kimberly Marshall on the Loft Glen Wilson label in 2002 and just a few by Silvano Rodi on Gall in the same year. Nothing as comprehensive as this Naxos collection has ever been released. Companion Titles 8.572983

Colombia’s thriving cultural heritage derives from Spanish, African and Amerindian elements. The rich blend of colour and rhythmic vitality found in the synthesis of dance forms and styles, notably the sharply accented Andean bambuco (‘pursuit dance’), the flowing, graceful pasillo and the traditional, rhythmic guabina, recurs throughout this programme. Poignant expressiveness and intricate virtuosity are features of Montaña’s Suite Colombiana Nos. 2 and 3. Saboya’s Suite Ernestina includes characteristically South American melodies and rhythms, while Caribbean rhythmic patterns are recreated in González’s Preludio. “The Idil Biret Solo Edition, featuring recent rather than historical performances by the Turkish pianist, is turning out to be a truly exceptional experience. The IBA (Idil Biret Archive) label has been releasing a flood of Biret recordings in its “Beethoven”, “Concerto” and “Archive” series, but the Solo Edition ones are in some ways the most impressive of all.” INFODAD Reviews (USA) – 2013 Companion Titles

Digital Exclusives Reinhold GLIÈRE (1875-1956) Symphonies Nos. 1-3

Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra • Stephen Gunzenhauser Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra • Donald Johanos • Keith Clark The symphonies of Reinhold Glière (1875 - 1956) were composed over the course of no more than a dozen years. Yet, despite their temporal proximity within the composer’s lifetime, each of the three distinct symphonies represent a different style and mood, highlighting the composer’s talent and range. Glière began to write his Symphony No. 1 in E-flat, Op. 8 in 1899, while he still attending the Moscow Conservatory. The work is a demonstration of romantic structure and harmony, with a melody that is jubilant, youthful, and characteristically Russian. In contrast, Symphony No. 2 in C minor, Op. 25 features more contrastic movements of dramatic intensity and rich lyricism. Dedicated to Sergei Koussevitsky, a friend of Glière’s who also conducted the premiere in 1908, the second symphony is the work of a more mature composer, despite its proximity to the first. Just three years later, Glière completed his Symphony No. 3 in B minor, Op. 42, representing a drastic change in style. Accompanied with the subtitle “Il’ya Muromets,” the name of a mythic warrior from Russian lore, the third symphony uses folk-like melodies, an impressionistic array of colors, and an uncommonly large orchestra to retell an ages-old Russian legend. Glière’s three symphonies represent his greatest work, and evoke the history of his majestic homeland, both past and present.

Karol SZYMANOWSKI (1882-1937) The Complete Piano Works of Szymanowski Martin Roscoe, Piano

The life of Polish composer Karol Szymanowski (1883 - 1937) spans the most pivotal period in the history of Western classical music. From the start of his compositional career, at the turn of the twentieth century, the widening cracks in the monolith of European romanticism had already formed, pushing the genre to the brink of a stylistic schism. Impressionism had already blossomed in France, and the non-traditional harmonies of modernism and the avant-garde were just on the horizon. The piano works of Szymanowski reflect this decisive time in musical history. His earliest pieces use a harmonic and melodic language akin to that of another popular Polish pianist; Frédérich Chopin, whose music had a major influence on Szymanowski. Later, as he and his music matured, Szymanowski’s style grew impressionistic and dissonant, a period which includes his twelve Études, Op. 33 (1916), and Sonata No. 3, Op. 36 (1917). After WWI, his style shifted yet again, returning to Poland for inspiration. With the music of his homeland in mind, Szymanowski composed a series folk-inspired works, including his twenty Mazurkas, Op. 50 (1924-25), and culminating in Two Mazurkas, Op. 62 (1933-34), his last known work. Szymanowski’s piano music not only reflects the full scope of the composer’s stylistic palette, but also that of an ever-shifting time in history. His masterpieces are certainly of their time. 8.504045 4 CDs 7

Naxos Audiobooks The Diary of Samuel Pepys Volume I: 1660−1663 By Samuel Pepys Unabridged Read by Leighton Pugh

9 781843 798392

The Diary of Samuel Pepys is one of the most entertaining documents in English history. Written between 1660 and 1669, as Pepys was establishing himself as a key administrator in the Navy Office, it is an intimate portrait of life in 17th-century England, covering his professional and personal activities, including, famously, his love of music, theatre, food, wine and his peccadilloes. This Naxos AudioBooks production is the world premiere recording of the diary in its entirety. It has been divided into three volumes. Volume I covers the opening years of the Restoration and introduces us to many of the key characters − family, government and royalty. Pepys was there when Charles II returned to England, and he lived through those opening years of the Stuart monarchy, with its revenge on the regicides. He also recorded the reopening of theatres, and how England relaxed from years of the Puritan way of life. Companion Titles NA0174 34 CD set

Framley Parsonage By Anthony Trollope Unabridged Read by David Shaw-Parker

9 781843 798491

In Framley Parsonage, the fourth novel of Trollope’s Chronicles of Barsetshire, the author leaves the confines of Barchester and looks to the countryside, where he relates the moral difficulties of Mark Robarts, the young clergyman who has recently been appointed Vicar of Framley. Desperate to keep up socially with the local aristocracy, the country parson is persuaded to underwrite the debts of Sowerby, a well-respected peer. However, when the debts are called in, Robarts finds himself in a serious predicament. Written with acute insight, together with a great deal of warmth and humour towards his characters’ attendant charms and foibles, Framley Parsonage is sure to delight. Companion Titles
