Labels of the Month Nimbus was founded in 1972 by the late bass singer Numa Labinsky, and the brothers Michael and Gerald Reynolds, and has traditionally been based at the Wyastone Leys mansion site, near Monmouth and the English/Welsh border. A core technical aspect of the company’s recording philosophy was the early adoption of the Ambisonic surround-sound system invented by a group of British researchers. Nimbus Records was the first company to master and press Compact Discs in the UK, and developed and sold equipment for these purposes. It became part of the Mirror Group in 1987. Following the demise of Robert Maxwell, the equipment company was spun off and the intellectual property rights to the Nimbus Records catalogue were ultimately re-acquired by the original owners under the name of Wyastone Estate Limited.

William Boughton & the ESO Wyastone Estate Limited is thus the home of NIMBUS RECORDS, but also the manufacturing and global distribution partner for eight other British labels presenting classical, world, jazz and popular music: Atoll Cameo Classics HallĂŠ Integra

BRENTANO STRING QUARTET The Brentano Quartet delivers the third volume of Beethoven’s Late Quartets for æon, this disc featuring Opp. 130 and 133. The relation between form and language seems to haunt all the writing of his Quartet in B flat major. Indeed, the composer struggles with the enigmatic question of our intimate experience in relation to music and the sense of musical composition. On the other hand, in the Grosse Fuge, Op. 133, Beethoven the visionary proclaims his unshakeable faith in a world like a will facing menace and chaos. The pertinence of the struggle marks the structure and character of every page of the quartet, one of the composer’s most inspired. Impossible not to be impressed by the sharpness of the stroke, the clarity of the discourse and the intensity of the affects. Brilliant virtuosos, the superb mastery of the Brentanos has made them famous and displays its full power in the release of this final volume.

With this new recording, Bruno Cocset’s Les Basses Réunies propose a journey back to 17thcentury England, centring on the work of Tobias Hume, an emblematic musician of the viola da gamba and, more precisely, the lyra violl. This exploration in terms of music as much as of sound, presents three instruments that have just come from the hands of instrument-maker Charles Riché (seconded by Friederike Dangel). A distinguished guest, the talented Italian gambist Guido Balestracci, plays a selection of solo pieces by the famous soldiercomposer. The Lyra violl is also accompanist for pieces composed for a dessus and Lyra violl, in which case Bruno Cocset plays his little ‘bastarda alto’ viol. The continuo, subtle and lush, brings together Bertrand Cuiller on the two harpsichords (one strung with brass wire, the other with gut strings), and Richard Myron on the large bass in G.

This album represents an unexpected dialogue between two musical worlds, the fruit of our encounter with Arnaud des Pallières for the film Michael Kohlhaas. This is not a simple soundtrack: it presents some of the music from the film, but also many pieces that accompanied its genesis but were not retained in the final edit. It thus provides an extension of the film.

This new recording pays tribute to an ill-known, mysterious figure of 18th-century Naples: Prince Raimondo di Sangro. A soldier, scientist, poet, alchemist and freemason, he bequeathed us a palace and a magnificent chapel, the site of a tragedy that was at the origin of the murder committed by the great composer Gesualdo. This chapel still houses artistic and scientific works both beautiful and mysterious, which serve as an initiatory itinerary for the visitor. The intuition of Guido Morini and Marco Beasley was to use this itinerary and make it the dramatic framework for a singular, innovative work that they have entitled Solve et Coagula, an alchemist maxim meaning ‘Dissolve and congeal’. A veritable dramma per musica, this work calls on different ‘historical’ creative processes in order to let us discover a unique story, featuring the rhythm of tarantellas, ostinati and mysterious fugues...

‘Of Beethoven and his worlds in music, some will remember more the herald of pure music or of programme music, the Dionysian bearer of joy, or the man suffering from suicidal impulses, the builder or the destroyer. In any event, the creator stopped writing piano sonatas in 1822, the year of E.T.A. Hoffmann’s death. All the transgressions that are propounded by Beethoven’s Promethean output would be unable to conceal his faithfulness to the ideals of Aufklärung, his classic desire to lead, beyond the asperities, to a resolution and, beyond darkness, to light.’ Brigitte François Sappey Eric Le Sage approaches this cycle with the sensitive vision of a great interpreter, henceforth renowned for his complete Schumann and Fauré recordings.

A377 STRADELLA,ALESSANDRO - La forza delle Stelle ENSEMBLE MARE NOSTRUM/DE CARLO,ANDREA Following four successful recordings released on the Ricercar, Alpha and Arcana labels, Rome-based Andrea De Carlo and his Ensemble Mare Nostrum continue their exploration of the Roman repertoire and inaugurate here a new series of recordings, with its own distinctive artwork, devoted to the vast and multifaceted musical heritage of the Eternal City. Recorded in Nepi (province of Viterbo), where Alessandro Stradella was born, ‘La forza delle stelle’ (‘The power of the stars’) gives us an opportunity to sample some of the fruits of the fascinating collaboration between that exceptionally expressive Baroque composer and the Roman poet Sebastiano Baldini, under the patronage of the exiled Queen Christina of Sweden. The serenata that gives the album its title, based on a scenario by Christina, deals – as was frequently the case at that time – with the subject of love, and the power of the stars to aid or thwart it. The result is a pure delight!

Total time : 64’10 1 CD PPD : 11,50€

Our first CD for Atoll featuring the music of New Zealand composer Keith Statham, spent six weeks at No.1 in the Radio New Zealand Classical Chart. For this, our second disc, we have chosen to record repertoire that formed the backbone of our two most recent tours, Ravel’s impressionist masterpiece and Tchaikovsky’s first quartet with the famous Andante cantabile second movement. For the final piece on the disc we owe thanks to our former NZSO colleague, Allan Chisholm, for introducing us to it. This beautiful Romance is the slow movement from the first incomplete string quartet by Rachmaninov, written when he was just 16 years of age.

Each of these three works has a sense of cultural identity and belonging to a physical location. Douglas Lilburn translates into music the sentiments of seven New Zealand poets, each expressing the pioneering experiences of European settlers in the colony. George Enescu portrays the plight of the Lautari of Romania and their endless search for stability in their adopted homeland. Ukrainian-born, Boris Pigovat emigrated to Israel in 1990 and while this sonata doesn’t make specific reference to the Jewish homeland, its music language leaves the listener in little doubt about the composer’s Russian origins and Jewish heritage. In the hands of these three master composers the essence of cultural heritage is raised to something higher than nationhood, into a kind of Nirvana, accessible and uplifting to all human consciousness. Donald Maurice has performed for over four decades as viola soloist, chamber musician and conductor, and has premiered many works. He has presented at over a dozen International Viola Congresses in Europe, North America and Australasia. Richard Mapp has taught at the New Zealand School of Music and has appeared as soloist with all the orchestras in New Zealand.

THE SOUNDS OF ‘ALL OUR YESTERDAYS’ PRESENTED BY BRIAN INGLIS Brian Inglis joined the RAF in 1940, completing two tours of operations and achieving the rank of Squadron Leader. After demobilisation he went to work on The Irish Times in Dublin. In 1953 he returned to England to work on The Spectator and was Editor from 1959 to 1962. He presented ‘All Our Yesterday’s on Granada Television for ten years. From 1964 to 1970 it covered the war years and the programme enjoyed its highest popularity. After the series ended Brian and the show’s producer, Bill Grundy, collaborated on a book on the years from Munich to the Berlin Air Lift. From this book stemmed the idea of compiling the sounds that had evoked so many memories for millions of people. Some of the sounds have been made familiar from the many programmes on television and radio but this CD is one of the most concise collections of the actual sounds of the politicians, statesmen, and entertainers, taken from Pathe newsreels. It vividly brings back the events and emotions of the time.

CC9007CD TCHAIKOVSKY,PIOTR ILITCH - LEOPOLD STOKOWSKI LIVE FROM THE PROMS : THE CONCERT & REHEARSALS FROM THE ROYAL ALBERT HALL, LONDON THE INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA/STOKOWSKI ,LEOPOLD Leopold Stokoswki conducted this symphony more often than any other Tchaikovsky symphony and like audiences all over the world, considered it the work of genius that it undoubtedly is. The symphony had received a tremendous ovation from the audience at its premiere, conducted by Tchaikovsky on 5 November 1888. He however considered it somewhat repellent, insincere, and patchy and it was most distressing for him. The reaction of the audience filling the huge Royal Albert Hall, to the magnificent performance presented by the 91 year-old Stokowski and his young 140-strong international orchestra on this CD is ample evidence of the love for this noble symphony. The performance was exclusively recorded by Cameo Classics. The rehearsals were also recorded, and illustrate the brevity with which Stokowski was able to instruct the players of many nationalities in order to obtain a performance of such individuality.

CC9016CD HAVERGAL,BRIAN - British Composers Premiere Collections Volume 8 : Havergal Brian -The Complete Music For Piano HILL,PETER William Havergal Brian was virtually self-taught in composition; nevertheless he rapidly acquired an invincible desire to be a composer and in the early twentieth century began to make a name for himself. Some of his music was admired by Elgar, works of his were performed by conductors such as Henry Wood and Thomas Beecham but the musical establishment however, with the exception of his good friend Sir Granville Bantock, passed him by and his own growing body of mature work remained almost entirely unknown and unperformed. With the death of Bantock in 1946, Brian lost his last advocate for performances of his music until the early 1950s, when his work came to the attention of a young BBC music producer named Robert Simpson. Simpson gradually brought about over the next quarter of century a growing number of performances mostly in radio broadcasts, which began to initiate recognition of Brian’s achievement. Brian died just short of his 97th birthday in 1972. Though he knew that the BBC was committed to broadcasting, in due course, all of his symphonies, not a note of his music was commercially issued on record during his lifetime and he died without having heard many of his finest works.

The music on this record comes to you from St. Paul’s Cathedral, the majestic setting for so many great Royal Services in recent years. St. Paul’s Cathedral in London is situated at the top of Ludgate Hill, the highest point in the City. St. Paul’s Cathedral, designed in the English Baroque style by Sir Christopher Wren, is one of the most famous and most recognizable sights of London, with its dome, framed by the spires of Wren’s City churches. It occupies a significant place in the national identity of the English population as many important services have been held at the Cathedral such as the funerals of Lord Nelson, the Duke of Wellington, Sir Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher. Other occasions include Jubilee celebrations for Queen Victoria, and peace services marking the end of the First and Second World Wars, the wedding of HRH Charles, Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer, launch of the Festival of Britain and thanksgiving services for the Golden Jubilee, the 80th Birthday and the Diamond Jubilee of HM Queen Elizabeth II. St. Paul’s Cathedral is a busy working church, with a daily pattern of prayer and worship.

CC9018CD East - West Encounters : Dreamtiger LUKAS,KATHRYN/DE SARAM,ROHAN/YOUNG,DOUGLAS/HILL,PETER It is reported that the island of Sri Lanka, off the coast of India, was sending ambassadors to the Greek and Roman courts as early as the 1st century B.C. Reciprocal influences that scholars have detected between Indian and classical Greek art may lead us to speculate on a time when music of the Orient and the Occident music were as one. Whatever their common origins the respective worlds of Asian and Occidental music moved to opposite poles during the ensuing millennia. Nevertheless, Colonial expansion was bound to bring a cultural awakening in the course of time, even if it first resulted only in tobacco, tea and spices. From ‘fairy lands forlorn’ to Mallarme’s brise marine, from Rousseau’s ‘noble savage’ to Gauguin, from Walden pond to a house in Sayan – these are but short steps. Wagner was contemplating an opera on the life of Buddha when he was mercifully taken from us. Many have seen the turning point as that day, nearly a century ago, when Debussy encountered an Indonesian gamelan at the 1889 International Exhibition in Paris. He did not endear himself to his contemporaries by commenting that beside Asian percussion instruments those of the West produce the noise of a travelling circus. It was 40 years before the first composer of the Western world actually went to live in Indonesia for the sole purpose of learning a new musical language.

CC9019CD Lewis Carroll’s The Hunting of the Snark THE LEICESTER CHORALE/FLETCHER,PETER/YOUNG,DOUGLAS/EASTON,PETER

Total time : 53’40 1 CD PPD : 11,50€

The Hunting of the Snark tells the tale of several characters who go on a sea journey, searching for a mythical creature called «The Snark», whatever it may be, for the Snark is different things to each of the characters. The Baker’s uncle once told him, «If your Snark be a Boojum! ... You will softly and suddenly vanish away, And never be met with again!». Through this journey relationships develop, tensions rise and the Baker’s worst nightmare comes true. The Hunting of the Snark shares its fictional setting with Lewis Carroll’s earlier poem «Jabberwocky» published in his children’s novel Through the Looking-Glass (1871). Eight nonsense words from «Jabberwocky»appear in The Hunting of the Snark: bandersnatch, beamish, frumious, galumphing, jubjub, mimsiest (which previously appeared as mimsy in «Jabberwocky»), outgrabe and uffish. In a letter to the mother of his young friend Gertrude Chataway, Carroll described the domain of the Snark as «an island frequented by the Jubjub and the Bandersnatch—no doubt the very island where the Jabberwock was slain.

CC9021CD PABST/TCHAIKOVSKY/RACHMANINOV - Pavel Pabst Piano Concerto: The Lost Concerto BELARUSIAN STATE ACADEMY OF MUSIC/TROCHOPOULOS,PANAGIOTIS In April 1885 pianist Pavel Pabst left his home in Moscow for St. Petersburg to give the premiere of his first orchestral composition, a Piano Concerto. The conductor was the great Nicolai Rubinstein, who was Director of the Moscow Conservatory. Although Pabst had attainted the position of Professor of Piano at Moscow Conservatory, for the critics of St. Petersburg, his concerto was a new work, by an unknown composer and from the rival musical city of Moscow. The Concerto received a poor reception and when Pabst returned to Moscow for a second performance conducted by Alexander Siloti, worse was to come. The critics there branded the work “Not in the tradition of Russian composition” and called the last movement ‘frivolous’. It was all too depressing for Pabst, still only 31 years old. He packed up the score of his first orchestral composition and sent it away to publishers in Leipzig. He chose to concentrate on his teaching and never composed for the orchestra again. His concerto was lost to the music world for over a century. Pabst’s sole orchestral composition will now live on through the talent of two young musicians, both of whom also breathe the tradition of the great romantic music of the Russians. British conductor Marius Stravinsky and Greek concert pianist Panagiotis Trochopoulos are both graduates of the Moscow Conservatory.

CC9022CD TCHAIKOVSKY,PIOTR ILITCH - TCHAIKOVSKY BALLET MUSIC LEOPOLD STOKOWSKI SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA/STOKOWSKI ,LEOPOLD Tchaikovsky wrote his Nutcracker ballet in 1892. The story is an adaptation by Dumas of E.T.A. Hoffman’s The Nutcracker and the King of the Mice. It concerns an old German nutcracker, who, having been saved from being defeated at the hands of the King of the mice by the child Clara, is changed into a handsome prince. He takes her on a journey to the kingdom of sweets, and they are entertained by divertissements of exotic dreams. For the music for ‘Aurora’s Wedding’, Diaghileff arranged as a suite some of the best items from the original score. A short overture contains fragments of the prologue, the roaring theme of the wicked fairy, Carabosse, and the motif of her adversary, the Lilac Fairy. With the start of a brilliant Polonaise, the curtains rises and the entire court advances. There are the King and the Queen, Aurora and her Prince and the leading nobles of the realm. This portion concludes with a waltz, one of the Tchaikovsky’s most beautiful, which is danced by the Lilac Fairy. The final duo is a compendium of the devices for rousing the enthusiasm of the audience. Aurora and her Prince Charming perform a noble and sustained adagio and the ballet concludes with a mazurka with the curtain falling after a hymn-like final page. Leopold Stokowski collected together the best of the New York players for His Symphony Orchestra.

CC9028CD CHOPIN,FREDERIC - THE THREE GREAT PIANIST COMPOSERS VOL.2

Chopin’s four Scherzi form a major contribution to the literature of the piano. Beethoven before him had already used the word (‘Scherzo’means ‘joke’ in Italian) in the sense of the symphonic ‘Scherzo and Trio’ but Chopin created the single-movement form and made it his own. With Chopin the scherzo came vigorously to life and although it cannot be thought of as a joke in the frivolous sense, a great deal of the music is fast and brilliant.

By the age of 10 she had performed her first concerto and when she was 12 Angela made her debut at London’s Wigmore Hall. She was awarded a piano scholarship to Edinburgh University and after graduation studied for two years in Rome with Guido Agosti and returned to complete her studies with Maria Curcio in London. She appears as soloist with many leading orchestras and Angela’s international festival engagements have included Bath, Edinburgh, Warwick, Newport, Rhode Island, Bratislava, Brno, Hong Kong and Maastricht. In an age that has become obsessed with mere technique and seeks the degree of perfection offered by overedited CDs. Angela’s playing restores spontaneity, character and beauty of sound to the platform. Liszt’s complete musical style is evident in these works which range from virtuosic fireworks to sincerely moving, emotional statements. Liszt’s recollection of his travels through Italy refers to the sights and sounds that inspired and gave rise to some of his most evocative music… “Having recently traveled through different settings and places consecrated by history and poetry, having felt that the phenomena of nature did not pass before my eyes as pointless images, and that, between us a vague but immediate relationship had established itself, I have tried to portray in music a few of my strongest sensations and most lively impressions.”

CC9034CD HOLBROOKE/MACKENZIE/SOMERVELL - BRITISH COMPOSERS PREMIERE - COLLECTIONS VOL.3 MALTA PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA/TONO,PAOLINO/LAUS,MICHAEL This charming little suite for strings, dating from the early 1900s is the forerunner of the Ballet Suite Pierrot, Op.36b. The original Pantomime Suite is content simply to be judged as a piece of light music divorced from the stage, portraying four stock characters out of the Italian Commedia dell’Arte. It was performed in Bournemouth in March 1908, conducted by the composer, and won for him the Charles Lucas Medal. La Belle Dame sans Merci, was commissioned by the Philharmonic Society for their 1883 season. The inspiration for this tone poem is wholly literary – Keats’ ballad poem of the same name. Mackenzie’s Ballad was well-received at its first performance and subsequent critics have drawn attention to its qualities. It is a distinguished contribution to symphonic programme music, and deserves to be heard more often. Thalassa is Somervell’s only symphony. It received its first performance in February 1913, by the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by none other than Arthur Nikisch. The symphony is in the tradition of the Brahms symphonies, with two large-scale outer movements flanking an extended slow movement, which may be regarded as the emotional fulcrum of the whole work, and a short, scherzo-like third movement.

CC9035CD HOLBROOKE,JOSEF - British Composers Premiere Collections Volume 6 : Josef Holbrooke - Music For Piano Vol.1 TROCHOPOULOS,PANAGIOTIS Joseph Charles Holbrooke was born in 1878 and his earliest grounding in musica came from his father (also Joseph), a fine pianist and a touring musician in the music halls. Holbrooke junior later adopted the German spelling of his name, and most (but by no means all) of his works were published under that appellation, as were many of his articles and other publications. In 1893, when he was fifteen, Holbrooke’s father decided he had nothing more to teach im and entered him as a student at The Royal Academy of music. Here, he won many honours and wrote some fine music, despite finding himself not infrequently at loggerheads with this tutors. In 1900, after Augustus Manns gave the first performance of Holbrooke’s tone poem The Raven at one of his Saturday Afternoon Concerts at Crystal Palace, his career began to take off.

CC9036CD HOLBROOKE,JOSEF - British Composers Premiere Collections Volume 7 : Josef Holbrooke - Music For Piano Vol.2 TROCHOPOULOS,PANAGIOTIS From 1897 to 1899 pieces for solo piano, or violin and piano flowed from his pen. Some were written for the leading soloists of the day but many were ‘bread and butter’ offerings designed for his pupils. However, it is not until we reach Op.42 that we discover a really important piano work by Holbrooke: the set of Ten Rhapsodie-Etues. Some of these, it is true, are reminiscent of the sort of virtuoso studies produced by Henselt or Moscheles in the mid-19th century but other are more contemporary in style. One of the most impressive of Holbrooke’s piano works in a ore modern idiom is Barrage, composed at the end of the First World War.

‘Le Villi’ signify the ghosts of maidens deserted by their lovers. The principal characters are Wulf, a mountaineer of the Black Forest, Anna, his daughter, and Robert, her lover. After their betrothal feast, Robert has to depart upon a long journey and swears to Anna that he will be faithful. In the second act, however, he is indulging in wild orgies in Mainz and squandering money on an evil woman. Tragically, Anna dies grief-stricken, having pined away waiting for Roberto to come back to her. Eventually he returns to the Black Forest and Le Villi dance about him. Anna’s ghost is one of the wild dancers. While he appeals to her, they whirl about him. He falls dead. The chorus sings ‘Hosanna’ in derision of his belated plea for forgiveness.

CC9047CD ZHUKOV,SERGUEI - Piano Concerto ; Violin Concerto BEKOVA,ELEONORA/BEKOVA,ELVIRA Sergei Zhukov had in his mind not only Eleonora Bekova’s skills as a soloist but also her psychological profile. ‘Eleonora is able to be in deep meditation at the same time as she is performing at the piano. She can simultaneously express sound and silence’. The theme of the concerto is that special relationship between sound and silence. ‘Silentium’ stems from the 1910 poem by the Jewish poet, Osip Mandelstam. The Angel’s Day Concerto was designed to fit the character of violinist Elvira Bekova, using her remarkable capacity to perform exactly according to the composer’s intention. It also reflects the theatrical style of the composer. The concerto, in many ways eccentric, even carnival-like, also has pure moments of lyricism. This reflects Zhukov’s portrait of both the Angel and the performer. ‘Angel’s Day’ is presented in four parts, recalling the classical symphony: morning, noon, evening and night. Sergei Zhukov is an eclectic composer having produced a large catalogue of chamber, choral, orchestral and theatrical works. He has placed particular emphasis on the genre of the concerto. He has composed three concertos for piano, violin and cello, which he dedicated to each of the Khazak Nakipbekova sisters.

Alfia Nakipbekova was born in Karaganda, a mining town in Central Kazakhstan, where, at the age of seven, she began her cello studies with exiled cellist and Gulag survivor, Roman Mazanov. She was accepted by the Moscow Central Music School for gifted children and 3 years later entered the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatoire to study with Mstislav Rostropovich, as well as receiving an extensive series of master classes from the soviet cello legend, Daniel Shafran. In 1981 Alfia defected to the UK where she realised her dream to study with Jacqueline Du Pré. She soon established herself as a leading soloist and chamber musician (with The Bekova Trio) and has appeared at major Festivals and concert halls throughout Europe, USA, Middle East, Canada and Australia. ALFIA’S PAPAY STORY I first came to Papa Westray (a small island off the most northern tip of Orkney inhabited by 70 people) in August 2007 to play a series of concerts, including a Bach recital at St. Boniface. I fell in love with Papay immediately, not because it is beautiful in a traditional sense, but because of the simplicity and practicality of the place; an island that has developed because of the needs of the people who live and work there - hardy, honest, decent working people. ...

C5213 ZIMMERMANN,BERND ALOIS - Alagoana; Sinfonie in einem Satz; Photoptosis; Stille und Umkehr DEUTSCHE STAATSPHILHARMONIE RHEINLAND-PFALZ/STEFFENS,KARL-HEINZ Among the German avant-garde composers after the Second World War, he was the great outsider. Despite all ruthless innovation, his creative ethos was characteristic of the German tradition in the dimensions of idealistic and philosophical complexity and bitter and disjointed tragedy. Zimmermann was initially strongly influenced by the polyphonic currents of neo-Classicism and Expressionism in the wake of Hindemith, Jarnach and Stravinsky, but his own voluminous and daring characteristics quickly crystallized. It was not to be an easy position for him over the next two decades, as he felt himself to be the eldest among the young composers and at best saw companions in his elder colleagues Luigi Dallapiccola and Karl Amadeus Hartmann. It was only the premiere of his opera Die Soldaten that brought him broad and undisputed recognition, and Die Soldaten was soon considered the most important German opera since Alban Berg. As start for the upcoming CD edition “modern times” the conductor Karl-Heinz Steffens and his orchestra, the Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz, take care of the most unknown orchestral pieces of this composer.

C5214 DALLAPICCOLA,LUIGI - Three Questions with two answers; Piccola musica notturna; Due pezzi per orchestra; … DEUTSCHE STAATSPHILHARMONIE RHEINLAND-PFALZ/STEFFENS,KARL-HEINZ / EZENARRO,ARANTZA Together with Giorgio Federico Ghedini and Goffredo Petrassi, who was also born in 1904, Luigi Dallapiccola was the most significant composer of the second generation of Modernism in Italy, following Ottorino Respighi, Ildebrando Pizzetti, Alfredo Casella and Gian Francesco Malipiero, and undoubtedly the most successful and famous among them. He first became internationally well-known with the Partita per orchestra, written at the beginning of the 1930s, which was premiered on 22 January 1933. His music now became increasingly more chromatic and, fascinated by Anton Webern and Alban Berg throughout his life, he discovered the twelve tone technique, which he as an Italian explored in a way of his very own, deliberately retaining strongly diatonic links and lyrical naturalness. With this second CD of the new CD-Edition “modern times”, Karl-Heinz Steffens and the Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz take care of the still not very famous orchestral pieces of this composer.

6.220649-50 FRANDSEN,JOHN - Requiem TEITUR/BUNDGAARD,SINE/PELLEGRINI,ANDREA/LODAHL,PETER/MEILEN,HALVOR F. This world premiere recording presents the Danish composer John Frandsen’s eloquent and moving Requiem (2010) for soloists, choir and orchestra. The work unfolds as a full-scale ‘operatic’ setting of the entire medieval Latin text in fascinating alternation with intimate solo hymns to Danish poems by Simon Grotrian (b. 1961), sung by the young Faroese singer Teitur. The composer has dedicated his requiem to the victims of the tragedy on the Norwegian island of Utøya in 2011. JOHN FRANDSEN ABOUT HIS REQUIEM «There is no greater task for a composer than to write a Requiem. A great and exciting task – but also a fearsome one! You have to find a mode of expression that makes room for the greatest and most fundamental extremes in human life. Life and death, grief and solace, desperation and release, judgement and grace, perdition and victory – Heaven and Hell. Incomprehensibly violent forces have to be let loose. I have decided to dedicate my Requiem to the memory of the victims on Utøya in Norway on 22 July 2011, when a right-wing extremist madman murdered 69 young people at a political summer camp. ...»

Alternating the wistful with the highly energetic, the three Suites, Op. 51 explore the possibilities offered by Chinese musical tradition. Total Time : 76’20 1 CD PPD : 10,00€

First performed on 1 March 1942, with the world in the grip of an unprecedented conflict, the symphony’s apparent message of resistance and ultimate victory provided audiences with an intoxicating emblem of hope and defiance. Shortly after the Nazi blockade of Leningrad (now St Petersburg) began in September 1941, Shostakovich and other members of the artistic elite were airlifted out of the city in the interests of their safety. He completed the score of the ‘Leningrad’ Symphony, dedicating it to the besieged people of his home city, hundreds of thousands of whom were to be starved or bombed to death that winter. As a result of the work’s far-reaching success, Shostakovich became not just a national but an international icon; at home winning the coveted Stalin Prize First Class and abroad gaining huge international attention. Whilst official political and media channels portrayed the piece as a rallying call in the fight against Nazism, Shostakovich subsequently revealed that much of it was composed in his head before the war, and claimed that it was as much a response to Stalin’s brutality during the notorious purges of the 1930s. The symphony is scored for vast orchestral forces, including an extensive battery of percussion, a piano, two harps and an array of extra brass instruments that strengthen the climactic moments in the first, third and fourth movements and which are used to great effect in this live recording of the acclaimed opening concert of Hallé’s current season.

HALLE/HARTY,HAMILTON/SARGENT,MALCOLM/HEWARD,LESLIE These recordings offer a fascinating insight into the playing of the Hallé before and during the Second World War, primarily with its Principal Conductor, Hamilton Harty. Harty’s recorded legacy with the Hallé stretches from early acoustic recordings made in 1920 through until he left Manchester in 1933, The Orchestra did not record again until 1941. It is important to remember the circumstances under which these recordings were made. Works needed to be divided up into four to five minute sections, and tempos often reflect this fact. There were no ‘second chances’, no edits and no opportunity to hear a finished ‘take’ without destroying it!

But it’s the performer that elevates this recording in something much more than an academic curiosity! 93.318 RAVEL,MAURICE - Complete Solo Piano Works UHLIG,FLORIAN Just last year, Florian Uhlig‘s recording of French Piano Concertos created a sensation. Though originally conceived as a respite from his ongoing project to record the first, truly complete edition of the piano works of Robert Schumann, Florian Uhlig’s excursion into late 19th and 20th century French repertoire demonstrated that he has a knack for the brilliant, urbane sound-world of the great French composers. This year, Uhlig continues his explorations in this new recording of the piano works of Maurice Ravel. Ravel’s piano music is perhaps the most concentrated corpus of music ever produced by a major composer. Despite their modest dimensions (the complete oeuvre can be performed in just over 2 hours), each composition sets out to achieve something new, shaping the genre to achieve works of consummate originality. And no one surpasses Florian Uhlig in delivering performances that allow all the fascinating, ecstatic virtuosity of this music to shine.

93.326 SHOSTAKOVICH,DMITRI - Symphony Nr. 5 RADIOSINFONIE ORCHESTER STUTTGART DES SWR/BOREYKO,ANDREY The recordings of the gifted Shostakovich interpreter Andrey Boreyko have hitherto been considered with great acclaim. This new recording of the Fifth Symphony is destined to become a new benchmark for this popular work. Especially since the potential for conflict contained within its pages calls out a thoughtful, well-researched interpretation that artists such as Boreyko can deliver. The 5th Symphony was completed in July 1937 as a «response of a Soviet artist to justified criticism» – a critique which befell Shostakovich in 1936, when Comrade Stalin took particular displeasure with the opera “Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District”, and reviled by Pravda as “Chaos instead of music”. Whether Shostakovich’s response is to be regarded as an affirmative gesture of proletarian humility, or a sardonic parody of Socialist-Realist “forced rejoicing” are just two of the exegetical decisions facing each conductor approaching this score. And that’s what makes Boreyko’s performances so endlessly fascinating.

Schumann: The Symphonies’ sees Robin Ticciati and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra embark upon their first symphonic cycle together in a programme that they performed in concerts across Scotland. This is music that is very close to Robin Ticciati’s heart; he describes Schumann as one of his favourite composers and has often spoken about how important poetry, colour and story are to Schumann’s music. Symphony No. 1 ‘Spring’, blazes and sparkles with joy, Symphony No. 2 finds its way carefully through to the safe haven of its final movement, the much-loved Symphony No. 3 ‘Rhenish’ moves with huge ease and assurance to a resonant and joyful conclusion. Symphony No. 4 is radical in the way each movement attacks the start of the next movement with barely a pause, and in its minute-and-a-half-long, shimmering and horn-call-filled transition to the finale. Under Ticciati and the SCO it is magnificent, the radical, soaring, disturbing and exhilarating symphony Schumann intended. The SCO’s smaller forces bring a lightness of touch and a clarity to the counterpoint; under Ticciati they achieve a sense of movement that no previous recording has. Robin Ticciati’s recordings have received many accolades: Critics’ Choice ‘Sound of 2012’ (The Independent), ‘Classical CD of the Week’ (Sunday Times), ‘Disc of the Week’ (BBC Radio 3 ‘CD Review’), No. 3 in The Sunday Times’ Best Classical Albums of 2012 list and ‘Recording of the Month’ (Gramophone).

Ensemble Marsyas’ recording of Johann Fasch’s finest chamber music demonstrates why the man and his music were so appreciated in his own lifetime. Founding member Peter Whelan and ‘the queen of the recorder’ (BBC Radio 3) Pamela Thorby are the soloists challenged with meeting the virtuoso demands of this engaging music. The four-movement Quartet in B-flat Major for recorder, oboe, violin and continuo is among one of Fasch’s most popular works; full of catchy tunes and contrapuntal ingenuity in equal measure, virtuosity is demanded from all concerned. The Concerto in F Major for recorder and strings was only recently attributed to Fasch. It is full of characteristic Fasch-isms and of the same dramatic quasi-recitative style as his Bassoon Concerto. Ensemble Marsyas’ debut ‘Zelenka: Sonatas’, featuring some of the most spectacularly challenging music ever written for wind instruments, was named ‘Chamber Choice’ by BBC Music Magazine. Ensemble Marsyas was awarded both first prize and the audience prize at the 2007 Brugge International Competition. This is the world-premiere recording of Fauré’s complete vocalises, a thirty-strong collection which has not seen the light of day in over a hundred years. Written when Fauré was Director of the Paris Conservatoire, these exquisite vignettes find new life in this performance by a fellow Director, the Royal Academy of Music’s Principal, Jonathan Freeman-Attwood. Originally ordered by increasing technical challenge Jonathan instead orders the pieces by the music’s varied ‘affects’ and aptly places them in a context central to Fauré. Jonathan is accompanied by pianist Roy Howat who is uniquely qualified in this role, having edited the newly discovered vocalises with Emily Kilpatrick for publication in 2013. ‘Fauré: Lydia’s Vocalises’ includes several bonus French works - which also started life as works for instruments other than trumpet and piano - originally featured on the albums La Trompette Retrouvée and Trumpet Masque accompanied by Daniel-Ben Pienaar. As a trumpet player and recording artist, Jonathan has attracted plaudits from the press; his producing career has resulted in over 200 albums and several awards including eight Gramophone Awards. Jonathan broadcasts regularly for BBC Radio 3 and is in demand as an essayist for EMI, Warner, Deutsche Grammophon and other major record labels.

MELCD1001797 PROKOFIEV,SERGEI - Symphonies Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra/Rozhdestvensky,Gennady Sergei Prokofiev’s music was the composer’s emotional response to the pressing problems of the era, and his name became a symbol of one of the main phases of musical culture development. “I wanted to sing a hymn to a free and happy man, to his mighty powers, his pure and noble spirit. I cannot say that I deliberately chose this theme. It was born in me and clamoured for expression. The music matured within me. It filled my soul”, Sergei Prokofiev wrote. The composer’s symphonic heritage (seven symphonies composed within 1917 to 1952) was one of the brightest pages of the world classical music. These works were brilliantly performed and recorded for a legendary project of Firma Melodiya of 1965–1967 by the Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra of the USSR conducted by Gennady Rozhdestvensky. The recording of Prokofiev’s last symphony was awarded the “Grand Prix du Disque” of Academie Charles Cros in France.

MELCD1002157 TCHAIKOVSKY,PIOTR ILITCH - Symphonies

It would not be an overstatement to call Tchaikovsky, a composer of a universal gift, one of the creators of the Russian symphonic tradition. In general, his symphonies follow a common European, Beethoven’s template. An intense dramatic emotion bring them closer together. In his Manfred Symphony after the poem by Lord Byron, Tchaikovsky paid homage to a romantic direction of programmatic symphonic music coming from Berlioz and Liszt. Traces of the programmatic aspect can be found in his other symphonies too, however the main theme is always an individual’s tragic loneliness before a formidable power of fate, his reckless yet hopeless struggle. The recording of all Tchaikovsky’s symphonies let us sense the diversity of approaches to the same scheme of a four-movement cycle, as well as the evolution of his mastery and figurative palette – from a light, lyrical and landscape First Symphony, Winter Dreams, and the Second one saturated with genre scenes, through a calm composure of the Third, a sharp conflicting drama of the Fourth and Fifth to a tragic Sixth (Pathétique) which was finished by the composer on the eve of his death. The recording of all Tchaikovsky’s symphonies were realized by the USSR State Orchestra conducted by Evgeny Svetlanov in 1967, when then a young conduct had just appeared before the conductor’s stand of the major orchestra of this country.

MELCD1002186 GLINKA/BALAKIREV/GLAZUNOV - Russian Chamber Music for Wind Instruments, vol. 2 SOKOLOV,VLADIMIR/KRASAVIN,SERGUEI/TIMOFEYRA,LYUBOV/ZVEREV,VALENTIN/ LYUBIMOV,ANATOLI This disc features compositions written within a hundred years between 1832 and 1932. Trio pathétique by Mikhail Glinka, one of the first Russian chamber ensembles originally composed for clarinet, bassoon and piano (winds are often replaced with strings) received its continuation in Mily Balakirev’s octet. The future leader of The Five met Glinka at a young age and earned a praise of his talent. An elegant music picture An Evening in Georgia by Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov presents an oriental area of Russian music. It was created under the impression of life in Tiflis (now Tbilisi), Georgia, where the composer lived for more than ten years and virtually led the music life of the city. Saxophone Quartet, a concluding piece of the programme is one of the last works by the classical Russian composer Alexander Glazunov composed in 1932. The composer was carried away with a new timbre of the saxophone and so excited with the sound of the musicians of the French National Guards orchestra that he wrote a composition especially for them in timbre colours which were so unusual for Russian music. The recordings feature soloists and musicians of some of the leading Moscow orchestras, including such outstanding musicians as harpist Emilia Moskovityanova, flutist Valentin Zverev, clarinetist Vladimir Sokolov, violinist Andrei Korsakov, cellist Fyodor Luzanov, saxophonist Lev Mikhailov and others.

MELCD1002187 SCHUBERT/BRAHMS - Sonatas for Viola and Piano. BASHMET,YURI/MUNTIAN,MIKHAIL Two viola sonatas by Johannes Brahms, Op. 120, composed in 1894, signify an actual completion of the composer’s creative life and the epoch of German music romanticism in general. The name of Yuri Bashmet is known to any music aficionado. A viola player, conductor, teacher and tireless public figure, he has been an active performer for almost forty years, a performer of the entire viola repertoire of academic music and an initiator of numerous works by contemporary composers. Pianist Mikhail Muntian has been Yuri Bashmet’s constant ensemble partner (along with Bashmet’s teacher Fyodor Druzhinin, he took part in the premiere of Shostakovich’s viola sonata). Their joint concert performances and recordings are notable for a splendid ensemble partnership, absolute integrity of performing ideas and in-depth comprehension of a musical text. Brahms’s sonatas was recorded in 1984.

The name of this musician emerged in the Soviet concert life in the early 1950’s. He quickly became successful as a solo violist and ensemble player. However, his thirst for something new and his strive for breaking stereotypes, which were the way of many cultural figures of the Thaw period led him to creating the first ever Soviet chamber orchestra. An exceptionally talented conductor and organizer, Rudolf Barshai won many well-known musicians over to joint playing, including those who had promising solo careers (violinist and conductor Lev Markiz, cellist Alla Vassilieva, harpsichordist and pianist Mikhail Muntian, oboist Evgeny Nepalo, bassoonist Vladimir Bogorad and others). The performances of the new orchestra surprised and admired the listeners. Its repertoire included compositions, which were previously little known to the domestic listeners, and on the contrary some well know, even “outworn” music, which sounded in a totally new way. The compositions featured on this album are instrumental concertos by Tomaso Albinoni and Antonio Vivaldi, the concerto grosso by George Friedrich Handel and a suite by “Bach’s fortunate rival” Georg Philipp Telemann became a discovery to the Soviet audience of the years.

Medtner was born to and grew up in a highly intellectual family of German origin which settled in Russia long ago. After more than three decades of living abroad, he stayed a spiritually Russian musician until the end of his days. Along with Rachmaninoff and Scriabin, Medtner was a prominent interpreter of his own works and one of those who opened a new era of Russian piano music. According to the outstanding musician, pianist and thinker Heinrich Neuhaus, Medtner as a pianist “created himself everlasting glory… That never ceasing feeling that he was not just a wonderful pianist but also a great musician and magnificent composer, that his thought and hearing entirely guided his fingers and phenomenal virtuosity, and that it was inspired pianism was particularly enjoyable”. The first volume of the anthology of Medtner’s recordings includes his smaller pieces – Novellas, the cycle Forgotten Melodies and the genre of piano fairy tale invented by the composer. The recordings were made in 1930 to 1947 in Paris and London.

Melodiya presents a recording of Dmitri Shostakovich’s 24 Preludes and Fugues performed by Tatiana Nikolayeva. This cycle have been played by many pianists, but Tatiana Nikolayeva’s interpretation is still considered a model one. Internally, each of the preludes and fugues is individual. Nevertheless, the whole cycle is united with the same composer’s idea. The infinite wealth of images – lyrical, pastoral, tragic, grotesque, carefree and joyous – puts this work among the highest achievements of Shostakovich’s music which was a worthy successor of the great traditions laid down by Johann Sebastian Bach.

RICHTER,SVIATOSLAV/KAGAN,OLEG/GUTMAN,NATALIA Ravel created his trio for piano, violin and cello in the summer months of 1914 in a Basque village (the composer’s mother was Basque), which is reflected in the themes of the first movement. The trio is notable for its virtuosic and technical freedom as regards each of the instruments. Thanks to that Ravel achieves truly orchestra effects. This peculiarity sets an especially complicated task for the performers. The Kagan-Gutman-Richter line-up was formed in the 1970’s and became one of the brightest phenomena of music performing art of this country. The three outstanding musicians performed in concert in Moscow and overseas, took part in the December Evenings Festival at the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts and made recordings on a number of occasions. The unique artistic personality of each of the soloists did not prevent them from creating an amazing ensemble with clear sound, an integral performing style and profound implementation of the concepts. Their recordings are still a benchmark for musicians of the next generations. The recording of Ravel’s trio was made at the concert in the Big Hall of the Moscow Conservatory in 1983.

MELLP0035 RAVEL,MAURICE - Piano Trio, vol. 2

This Dvořák’s concerto is one of the most popular works of the cello repertoire. The composer wrote to a friend, “This concerto significantly outdoes both of my concertos, the violin one and the piano one. Don’t be surprised that I’m talking about it myself – you can’t rely on one’s own praise, - but I can tell you this piece brings me enormous joy, and I think my appraisal is not wrong”. When the sheet music of the concerto fell into Brahms’s hands, he exclaimed, “Why am I the last to know that a cello concerto can be written like this? I would have written it long ago”. Dvořák’s concerto takes a special place in the repertoire of one of the greatest cellists of the 20th century. He definitely played it for more than a dozen times with various orchestras and conductors, including his last concert as a cellist in 2005 in Vienna, but each of the performances was a thrilling event, a breathtaking aesthetic experience for the listeners. “There’s hardly anyone else who is able to achieve more expression when playing this concerto than the great Rostropovich did,” wrote an authoritative European critic. This recording of the concerto was made at the Big Hall of the Moscow Conservatory with the Big Symphony Orchestra of All-Union Radio conducted by Rostropovich’s close friend and outstanding maestro Gennady Rozhdestvensky.

MELLP0041 MUSLIM MAGOMAYEV. ARIAS FROM OPERAS THE MOSCOW RADIO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA/ORCHESTRA OF CINEMATOGRAPHY/ TERLETSKY,VLADIMIR/TAGIZADE HAJIBEYOV,NIYAZI Muslim Magomayev’s skills of musical and acting transformation are striking and a probable object of envy to many of the celebrated operatic performers. A sparkling and ever cheerful Figaro (the singer polished his greatest part during his training in Italy); a Don Juan radiating masculine magnetism; a Prince Igor absorbed in heavy thought and with his heart directed to his loving wife; a firm Ethiopian leader Amonasro dreaming of revenge; a Méphistophélès finely playing with superstitious horror of the crowd; and a Rigoletto who is truly frightful in his despair – all the roles performed by Magomayev even in short fragments are united through profound humanness which makes us empathize the characters. He was one of the first Soviet singers to perform in the original languages although the language barrier was something that never existed between Magomayev and his audience.

He studied conducting with Wolfgang Vacano (1906–1985) at Indiana University, majoring in chemistry. He continued to study conducting with Josef Blatt (1906–1999) at the University of Michigan while pursuing his chemistry degree. Hailed by Robert Marsh of the Chicago Sun Times as “an outstanding talent”, Yondani Butt has received acclamation from critics and audiences for his many CD recordings and concert performances. In the early 2000s, Yondani Butt suffered damage to his vocal chords, and retired from conducting. However, in 2009 he returned to the podium, working with the London Symphony Orchestra to record many of the Austro-German classics, including Beethoven, Brahms, Schumann and Wagner, as well as works by Tchaikovsky, and a disc of French Classics. Yondani Butt is also a composer. He studied free counterpoint and composition with Bernard Heiden (1910–2000). Heiden was born in Frankfurt am Main and was a student of Paul Hindemith’s. In Indiana, Yondani Butt studied piano with Sidney Foster, a protégé of Isabelle Vergarova and David Saperton at the Curtis Institute. NEW HAVEN SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA/BOUGHTON,WILLIAM Bold, passionate, urgent—Augusta Read Thomas writes music that is wholly and completely alive. In many of her own program notes, she includes this sentence: “I like music that is alive and jumps off the page and out of the instrument as if something big is at stake.” The first two volumes of this Augusta Read Thomas recording series focused on orchestral and chamber/piano music respectively, collecting performances by various ensembles. This third volume is something a bit different: a recording of a live 50th birthday concert presented by the New Haven (Connecticut) Symphony Orchestra under the direction of William Boughton. One of the two largescale works on the recording is also one of Thomas’s most recent (and was premiered on the concert), the dramatic Hemke Concerto, “Prisms of Light” (2014). This concerto was commissioned as a retirement gift for legendary saxophonist and pedagogue Frederick L. Hemke by many of his students past and present. This concerto is music that almost requires the listener to wear sunglasses—exploring fully the saxophone’s capacity for both lyrical, human expression and glorious, otherworldly color. The other large-scale composition is Absolute Ocean (2008), a song-cycle for soprano and orchestra with a significant obbligato harp part. Absolute Ocean is especially spare and atmospheric in texture.

NI6273 Princely Splendour : Choral Works from 18th Century Rome HARMONIA SACRA /LEECH,PETER Reports of music in Rome in 1770 provide valuable evidence about performance practice at that time. He noted that even on common days the choir of the Sistine Chapel comprised a (comparatively large) average of 32 singers (SATB-8,8,8,8), roughly the same size and balance as we have chosen for this recording. Although it was sometimes the case with accompanied polychoral works (performed in the main basilica at St. Peter’s, and elsewhere in Rome), for each choir to have its own continuo organ, it was also common in Roman churches for accompanied double-choir works to be underpinned by just one organ. For purely pragmatic reasons we have therefore used only one instrument. Pitch used for the a cappella works is A=440, for the accompanied items A=415. HARMONIA SACRA were formed by Peter Leech in 2009 specifically for the performance of lateRenaissance and early-Baroque music, and have received critical acclaim for ‘stupendous singing’ (Weston Mercury, 2013) as ‘a fine body of singers’ (Bristol Evening Post, 2009). They have established a reputation for fresh, uplifting performances. Members come from across the UK for intensive weekends of music-making. In 2011 the choir performed Victoria’s sublime 6-part 1605 Requiem to a packed All Saints’ Church, Westonsuper- Mare, a highlight of the May music festival.

The selection of music on this CD is very personal. I have chosen pieces which mean a lot to to me for a variety of reasons, and which I feel work well side by side. At the heart of this recording is Chopin’s G minor Ballade, which I have loved since I was in my teens. I performed it in my first public solo recital in 1973 and have continued to study it ever since. More than any other piano work it has helped me to assess and to extend my own boundaries as a musician and and as a performer. I envisage continuing to study it until the day I can no longer play. Most of the works that I have recorded here were written in a fourteen-year period, between 1827 and 1841. The exceptions are the two works by David Matthews, which are the most recent pieces of many that I have commissioned over the years. Playing works by living composers has been an extremely important part of my life as a performer, and throughout my career I have always made a point of programming contemporary works alongside music from the past. David’s pieces also add to the personal flavour of this recital; in what is commonly known as a ‘portrait recording’ it seems appropriate to include his Four Portraits, which are musical representations of myself and three friends. The final piece, David’s brilliant reduction of Wagner’s Ring Cycle, was also written for a mutual friend. I would like to thank all those who encouraged me to make this recording and have supported the making of it in numerous ways.

NI6279 BRAHMS,JOHANNES - Three Piano Quartets

NI6281 SAWYERS,PHILIP - Cello Concerto ; Symphony N.2 ; Concertante for Violin, Piano & Strings ORCHESTRA OF THE SWAN/WOODS,KENNETH/BOGDANOVI,MAJA/ STONEHILL,LOUISA/BURNS,NICHOLAS

It’s a perfectly natural response when encountering a composer’s work for the first time to compare it to music we already know. We all do it, and this instinct to relate the new to the familiar can help us begin to understand new musical languages and idioms. However, if we really want to get to grips with new voices, to fully understand what we’re hearing and how it’s affecting us, I think it’s important to move past reacting to music in terms of what it is like, and to move on to engaging with what it is as quickly as we can. The cello concerto was commissioned by the Sydenham International Music Festival in 2010 and written for cellist Maja Bogdanovic. The work is in 3 movements and is scored for a classical-size orchestra. Commissioned by the Sydenham International Music Festival, The Symphony n.2 was premiered in June 2008 by the London Mozart Players conducted by Robert Trory. The only stipulation on the commission was that the orchestral forces were the same as in Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony, the last piece on the programme. This Concertante was commissioned by the Czech violinist Tomas Tulacek in 2006 as a welcome addition to the limited number of works, including examples by Haydn and Mendelssohn, for this somewhat unusual combination of instruments.

NI6282 KABALEVSKY,DMITRY - Piano Pieces For Children Young & Old JOHNSON,KIRSTEN A prolific composer, Dmitri Borisovich Kabalevsky (1904 - 1987) wrote four piano concerti, three piano sonatas, four symphonies, five operas, a violin concerto, two cello concerti, many songs and other works, including lots of piano pieces for young people. Some of these are programmatic, depicting childhood scenes; others are pedagogic, providing short pieces for the learner. Not all are easy! But they are all inspired and charming, and very playable. The five sets of variations of Opus 51 (1952), interspersed between other works on this disc, offer technical challenges within a framework of folk-song development. The Soviet music system encouraged composers to use folk melodies, making music accessible: ‘for’ the people and ‘by’ the people. To this end, Kabalevsky took Russian, Ukranian and Slovakian melodies as the themes for these sets of variations. Born in the USA, Kirsten Johnson has resided in the UK since 1994. She completed her Doctor of Musical Arts in piano performance at the University of Missouri with a Kemper Doctoral Fellowship, and undertook further studies in Vienna under a Rotary International Foundation Scholarship.

Schnittke’s reputation was steadily growing, and after the death of Shostakovich in 1975 he became one of the leading composers in Russia. Despite official resistance, obstacles and restrictions on travelling abroad, his music was now being performed in the USSR and his status as a major, internationally recognized composer was apparent. Schnittke composed his first piano sonata in 1987, the year in which I was finally allowed to emigrate from the Soviet Union. This work could be considered the beginning of his late period. The world premier took place in the fall of 1988, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, in an all-Schnittke concert, the first of its kind in the US, which I organized. Alfred and his wife Irina came to New York from Russia to attend this event. As in many of Schnittke’s works written for a particular performer, the musical material is based on the monogram of the name of that musician, in this case, mine. The sonata opens with a very slow line that contains the notational representation of my name. The first movement has no indicated speed: it is a senza tempo recitative beyond time. All of the musical material of the entire sonata is present here, as in Beethoven’s sonatas. A Russian Orthodox chant appears and vanishes and the opening theme returns at the end of the movement. I was very fortunate to know and be close to Alfred Schnittke. I am grateful for his friendship and his music. Vladimir Feltsman

This CD has been a long time coming. It dates back really to the first time Pa co and I ever met, when we performed separately at a now defunct guitar festival in Mettman, Germany, in September of 1983. This was the first time I had the chance to hear Paco live, and I can still remember many moments from his concert. We became friends at once, but it was not until about 6 years later that we began to perform as a duo. Since that time I count Paco as one of my greatest teachers. Due to the fullness of our individual careers we have only occasionally toured together, yet the result has always been memorable. This CD does not pretend to be either pure flamenco or pure classical. Necessarily the classical selections are coloured by Paco’s flamenco sensibility as the flamenco selections are inflected by my formation in the classical world. But that is exactly what is interesting. Paco finds things in classical music that would never occur to a classical player; and perhaps something analogous can be said of my attempts to enter the mysterious temple of flamenco. We have organized the pieces heard here into 4 sets of 4 pieces each with a duo version of Francisco Tárrega’s famous Recuerdos de la Alhambra, as a sort of encore. There are places where each of us improvises separately and places where we each play something completely planned out.

DE ROTSCHILD,CHARLOTTE/FARMER,ADRIAN Both listener and performer have been so long attached to the songs Fauré wrote in the period 1860-1890 that it seems to have prevented us from embracing his later, and far more satisfying, wo rks. Lydia, Clair de lune, Après un rêve and about twenty other songs from Fauré’s early and middle years have achieved high status, and rightly so; as far as individual songs go they are the best of the best. But concert audiences will only occasionally encounter one of the late cycles, perhaps Mirages, rarely the comple te La Bonne chanson and even less likely Fauré’s perfectly executed final utterance L’Horizon chimérique. Performances of the main work presented here – La Chanson d’Ève – are rarer than hens’ teeth. How this twenty-four minute masterpiece has so completely slipped the net is a mystery and a tragedy. During the planning stages for this recital Charlotte de Rothschild and I both mention to colleagues that w e were learning the work and we became used to the response – ‘never heard it, actually never even heard of it’. It was impossible to be too smug since we had only discovered the work ourselves a few months earlier. Adrian Farmer

The latest work on this CD is the Cello Concerto in A minor from 1850. In the worrying years leading to the composer’s dea th he was having trouble getting works published but a welcome approach came in 1853 from the publishing house Breitkopf with a fee of 20 Louis d’or for a few of Schumann’s latest pieces, including the cello concerto which they particularly liked. The composer tantalizingly offered them a version with string quintet, and a piano reduction along with a full orchestral score, but the last two never materialized. Raphael Wallfisch was inspired by this intriguing concept and he asked the distinguished Swiss composer Arthur Lilienthal to adapt the full score for strings. The result, heard on this recording, and which Raphael has performed many times in concert, lends fresh clarity and lightness to the texture, allowing the soloist even more freedom, especially at the low dynamic levels the composer calls for. Raphael has played it with very small orchestras, often without conductor, which emphasizes even more the pure chamber qualities of this wonderful work. With that in mind it seemed highly appropriate to place the concerto in the context of Schumann’s other works for cello (the Stücke im Volkston), together with the exquisite pieces written for single instrument and piano; ‘songs without words’ in the vein of his friend Felix Mendelssohn.

OC437 BOCK,JERRY - Anatevka

Total Time: 76’20 1 CD

The musical Anatevka tells the story of the Jewish milkman Tevye and his family in the Russian Empire around 1905. When the three eldest daughters reach marrying age and, in Tevye’s view, fall in love with completely unsuitable men, his consciously traditional way of life is turned completely upside down. After initial discord over his daughters’ nuptial wishes, love ultimately triumphs and the three girls marry their respective chosen ones. Anatevka will be seen on the Lake Stage in Mörbisch in 2014 for the first time; with its wonderfully beautiful melodies, scenery and a brilliant production, it promises to be a true feast for the eyes and ears.

In well-established quality, Joseph Kelemen plays the Scherer Organ in Tangermünde. This organ of the Church of St. Stephan in the Hanseatic city of Tangermünde was built by Hans Scherer the Younger together with his brother Fritz in the years 1623/24 as a gift of the city of Hamburg. It has over 32 stops on three manuals and pedals; about 50% of the pipes (including all the front pipes) as well as the carved casing have been preserved in their original form.

OC897 TELEMANN,GEORG PHILIPP - Sonaten, Trios, Concerti L’ACCADEMIA GIOCOSA Telemann’s musical legacy is extremely extensive and comprises all the customary musical genres of his time. Typical of Telemann are cantabile melodies, inventively applied timbres and, especially in his late works, unusual harmonic effects as well. The instrumental works frequently reveal the strong influence of French and Italian music, and occasionally folkloristic Polish influences as well. Stefan Schilli, solo oboist of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, has strongly committed himself to this repertoire on BR Klassik; this forms the basis for the creation of the present CD with Schilli’s “Accademia giocosa” as a co-production with that broadcasting station.

This new release from the Latvian Radio Choir conducted by Sigvards Kłava features timeless choral works by three composers from Russia and Latvia: Yuri Falik, Arturs Maskats and Georgy Sviridov. The themes of the 20th and 21st century choral works presented on the disc range from love to nature and the sacred. Five of the works include solo parts which are sung by two notable Latvian singers, Aleksandrs Antoņenko and Eva Ezeriete. Latvian Radio Choir’s previous releases on Ondine have been highly successful. For instance, the recording of Rachmaninov’s All-Night Vigil (ODE 1206-5) was chosen as the Record of the Month, Editor’s Choice and received a nomination in the Gramophone Awards in 2013. The title work of the recording, Sviridov’s Sacred Love, is a unique example of aesthetic and beautiful vocal writing and has also great potential for radio play. The Latvian Radio Choir is regarded as one of the top professional chamber choirs in Europe. The repertoire extends from the Renaissance to the present day. The Choir regularly commissions works from leading Latvian composers. Sigvards Kļava, Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Latvian Radio Choir since 1992, is one of Latvia’s most prolific choral conductors.

ODE1239-2 SHOSTAKOVICH,DMITRI - Violin Concertos n.1 & 2 HELSINKI PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA/STORGARDS,JOHN/TETZLAFF,CHRISTIAN Ondine’s successful partnership with violinist Christian Tetzlaff continues with a new release. The new recording contains the two Violin Concertos by Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975), two powerful works by the composer originally written for David Oistrakh. Christian Tetzlaff has been considered as one of the world’s leading international violinists for many years, and still maintains a most extensive performing schedule. Musical America named him “Instrumentalist of the Year” in 2005 and his recording of the violin concertos by Mendelssohn and Schumann, released on Ondine in 2011 (ODE 1195-2), received the “Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik”. Tetzlaff’s recording of the Mozart Violin Sonatas (ODE 1204-2) was chosen Gramophone Magazine’s Editor’s Choice and Recording of the Month by the BBC Music Magazine. Tetzlaff’s previous release on Ondine featuring the Schumann Violin Sonatas (ODE 1205-2) was also chosen Disc of the Month by the Gramophone Magazine. The two Violin Concertos by Shostakovich, written in the 1940s and 60s, belong to the composer’s most powerful and most personal works, yet they are very much different from each other. Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No. 1 was written during a wave of Anti-Semitism in Soviet Union and premiered only after Stalin’s death. Violin Concerto No. 2 is a grand example of Shostakovich’s late period.

PTC5186490 BEETHOVEN,LUDWIG VAN - The Complete Piano Sonatas KODAMA,MARI The waiting has finally paid off: the complete Beethoven piano sonata cycle has finally arrived. Japanes pianist Mari Kodama is only the fourth woman to have recorded all of Beethoven’s sonatas (Pizzicato). Although not the first with this achievement, the very idea that an artist can play this music and still introduce a new perspective, as Kodama so often proves with her performances, is astonishing. As Gramophone eloquently phrases it :’Nevr bearing down heavily on the music, she always aloows Beethoven his own voices.’ After starting the recordings in 2003, Mari Kodama completed the final piece in 2013. Once again Ms. Kodama meets all expectations in the pursuit of these horizons, and she entirely takes on the challenge with the last instalment of her critically-acclaimed journey through this ever-fascinating cycle. lt is then only fair thot this feat is celebrated in the form of a collector’s item SACD box set with its larger-than-life surround sound. One can’t have too many Beethoven sonata cycles in their library when the performance is this fabulous and the surround sound is just to die for. RUNDFUNK-SINFONIEORCHESTER BERLIN/RUNDFUNKCHOR BERLIN/ JANOWSKI,MAREK In 2010, Pentatone decided to embark on the ambitious project of recording the ten major Wagner operas with the same musical forces. Never before had a record company recorded all of Wagner’s operas with the same orchestra, choir and conductor, even the same producer, within a period of two and a half years. On top of that, all of the operas, including the Ring Cycle, were recorded for the first time in multi-channel sound as - as is cutsomary for Pentatone - with the highest technical quality. Each opera was performed only once and live. Conductor Mark Janowski explicitly wished to avoid any publicity, since this is the best way to allow the music to stay true to its nature. This made it possible to accomplish such a superior recording. Don’t miss the opportunity to own this jewel of a piece for xx eur! The box also contains a bonus dvd which contains an interview of Mark Janowski adn some fragments from Götterdämmerung.

RIC345 GRETRY,ANDRE-MODESTE - LA CARAVANE DU CAIRE LES AGREMENS/CHŒUR DE CHAMBRE DE NAMUR/VAN WAAS,GUY Premiered in 1784 at the Académie Royale de Musique, where it ensured the institution’s fortune, La Caravane du Caire was one of Grétry’s most famous operas, its popularity continuing into the 19th century. After the recording made under the direction of Marc Minkowski in 1991, Guy Van Waas proposes an energetic new version that enables us to discover a few variants in relation to the previous version. This production, realized by the Palazzetto Bru Zane of Venice, benefits from a fascinating musicological presentation by Alexandre and Benoît Dratwicki. The libretto is typical of the oriental subjects that were so highly prized in the late 18th century. Here, the beautiful Zélime, sold as a slave to a pasha, is rescued from the seraglio thanks to the courage of her beloved Saint-Phar and the loyalty of another Frenchman, Florestan. The work is peppered with comical situations, tender or bravura arias (including a pastiche of Italian-style coloratura) and embellished with numerous ballets, some of which contribute an original note of exoticism.

RIC350 RAMEAU,JEAN-PHILIPPE - Concerts en sextuor LES DOMINOS/MALGOIRE,FLORENCE Ricercar could not help but participate in celebrating Rameau Year. It is Florence Malgoire’s ensemble LES DOMINOS that pays this tribute with a very rarely played repertoire. This is what Camille Saint-Saëns called Concerts en Sextuor in the edition of Rameau’s works that he undertook at the end of the 19th century. To carry out this monumental project, he started from a manuscript executed, it would seem, by a certain Monsieur Decroix in 1768, i.e., four years after the composer’s death. These Concerts de Monsieur Rameau are, in fact, transcriptions in six parts of the Pièces de Clavecin en Concert that Rameau had conceived at the outset from his harpsichord pieces with accompaniment by violin or flute and bass viol. This adaptation by M. Decroix is quite enigmatic, and Les Dominos give us a colourful reading of it, combining with the strings two emblematic instruments of Rameau’s orchestra: flutes and bassoon.

Rameau celebrated by Haugsand In 2014 Ketil Haugsand enjoys the complete works for harpsichord solo by Jean-Philippe Rameau, marking 250 years since the death of the French composer. Rameau composed most of his keyboard works at a time when he was essentially a professional keyboard player and teacher who had a growing interest and involvement in the theatre. By the time of his death, his achievements as a composer of operatic works had eclipsed whatever fame he had achieved as a keyboard composer. Taken as a whole, however, his harpsichord compositions contain an incredible array of appealing melodies, clever formal devices and subtle references that make him one of the most extraordinary French keyboard composers of all time.

ENGLISH CHAMBER ORCHESTR/LOPES,RUI The dream of many classical musicians is to record as a soloist with an extraordinary orchestra such as the English Chamber Orchestra. Mine came true thanks to Verena and Hans-Ulrich’s invitation and I could not be happier! This privilege, together with the fact that I could chose the repertoire and the recording team made it even more fascinating and special. The list of pieces that I love to play is quite long, and making the selection was both interesting and challenging. I did not want to have only one theme or period in musical history, but rather a selection of pieces that I enjoy playing the most from our beautiful repertoire. I started from the beginning (or almost..) with Vivaldi..how could I ‘escape’ Mozart? And Villa-Lobos? I wanted it to be a journey through the bassoon - ‘the unknown soloist’ repertoire. And Elgar? And the Françaix which had never been recorded with string orchestra? The ‘chamber music’ nature of the pieces led me to record without a conductor and to share leadership with the great Stephanie Gonley, ECO’s concertmaster. The project was a great challenge, due to the difficulty of the pieces, but thanks to our amazing producer Andrew Keener we really had fun with it. I hope you’ll enjoy this journey “Through Time”. SM211 VIVALDI/MOZART/ELGAR - Through Times

SM214 KLENGEL/BECKER/TORTELIER - Suites for Violoncello solo WAGNER,MARKUS Apart from the early Baroque ricercari and didactic works like the études and capriccios of composers such as Duport, Dotzauer and Piatti, the repertoire for solo cello up to the Romantic period comprises only two works: Johann Sebastian Bach’s Six Suites BWV 1007- 1012 (c. 1720) and Max Reger’s Three Suites op. 131c of 1914. While numerous works for solo cello have been written since Hindemith and Kodály, they are all clearly orientated around twentieth-century tonal language. This CD presents the first recording of two original, very different and thus far unknown Romantic works for solo cello: Julius Klengel’s Suite in D minor op. 56 and Hugo Becker’s Fantastic Suite from the life of the woodland gnome op. 14. Both of these early twentieth century works represent the two leading cellists’ discovery of composing late in life. Like Paul Tortelier’s strongly Bach-oriented Suite in D minor, they are important additions to the cello repertoire. This year we celebrate with both composers anniversaries: Hugo Becker (150. year of birth) and Paul Tortelier (100. year of birth). Markus Wagner has won prizes at several national and international competitions, including first prize at the Felix Mottl Competition in Munich in 1989, the Arts Bursary of the city of Augsburg in 1991, a medal at the Maria Canals Concours International de Musique in Barcelona in 1991 and a diploma at the Concours International d’Exécution musicale in Viña del Mar, Chile in 1991.

SOB06 STRAVINSKY,IGOR - Le Sacre du printemps: Version for Orchestra and for Piano Four Hands SINFONIEORCHESTER BASEL/RUSSELL DAVIES,DENIS/NAMEKAWA,MAKI As early as spring 1910 Igor Stravinsky had a vision of a «»great pagan festival»» the climax of which would be the death of a young girl who dies of exhaustion after a frenzied dance, surrounded by the elders of her tribe. A further eighteen months would elapse however, during which Stravinsky consulted with the archaeologist and painter Nikolai Roerich to produce several versions of a libretto, before the composer set about realizing his vision by writing the score for this, his most famous ballet. Initially, the score bore the working title The great sacrifice, but was then renamed The Rite of Spring, and marked the international career breakthrough for the composer, not yet 32 years old, following his two earlier ballets for Sergei Diaghilev and his Ballets Russes, Firebird and Petrushka. And it has to be said that that breakthrough came with a mighty drumroll: when Le Sacre was premiered on May 29, 1913 at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, choreographed by the young Vaslav Nijinsky and under the musical direction of Pierre Monteux, the ballet caused one of the greatest scandals in the history of music and theatre ever – though it has to be said that Nijinsky’s choreography, with its stamping, twitching body movements that seem to truly mock the ideal of weightless grace normally expected in dance, was at least as much to blame as Stravinsky’s music.

October 25, 1893 (November 6 according to the Gregorian calendar): Death-knell bells tolled all over Russia for Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, and the Tsardom of Russia arranged for a lavish state funeral. Doctors interviewed by the newspapers also confirmed the cause of death as uremia due to cholera. But soon there were an increasing number of medically corroborated dispatches that hardened suspicions of premeditation and even spoke of suicide by poison. Then the idea of the Symphony in B minor as a requiem for himself began to circulate, and a myth was born. December 14, 2013: A recording session in the Golden Hall of the Vienna Society of the Friends of Music marks the dawn of a new era for the Wiener Symphoniker. The history of this traditional Viennese orchestra is filled with 282 celebrated performances of P. I. Tchaikovsky’s Pathétique. And now the orchestra’s new chief conductor Philippe Jordan will show what he’s made of by interpreting this highly significant work. The orchestra’s intense involvement with Tchaikovsky’s Sixth began in 1903 with the legendary Russian conductor Vasily Safonov and the previous ensemble, the Wiener Concertverein. Other colleagues of equal stature absolutely demonstrated their abilities by way of this final opus: Seiji Ozawa, Václav Neumann, Yakov Kreizberg, Hans Knappertsbusch, ...

Angelo Berardi (Sant’Agata Feltria, Urbino, 1636 – Rome, 1694) was a pupil of Giovan Vincenzo Sarti and Marco Scacchi, of the Roman school, the latter a fundamental figure in his training. Committed supporter of the Seconda Prattica, Berardi maintained that modern music had reached “greater perfection compared to the past” and that the practice of music was more important than theory; he asserted, moreover, that a good composition should also elevate the soul to virtuous thoughts. His life’s path wound its way through numerous centers (among them Montefiascone, Viterbo, Tivoli and Spoleto) to the crowning of his career as maestro di cappella in Santa Maria in Trastevere in Rome in 1692, where he died surrounded by numerous cages with canaries and other birds that he left to his pupil Raffaelle [sic] Raffaelli to inherit (one of the twelve heirs of his few things), together with his self portrait. Berardi was a prolific writer and a very able contrapuntist whose value was, already at that time, extensively recognized, perhaps also because of the careful balance that allowed him to praise the genius of Arcangelo Corelli while maintaining an excellent rapport with the Bolognese Giovanni Paolo Colonna during the years of the famous diatribe between those two. In terms of his stylistic profile, Berardi shows fantasy and richness of inspiration, so much so that his only work assigned to the violin seems to cover the entirety of the instrument’s abilities and expressive variety.

The great opera-music fantasias (such as the flute one by Morlacchi on Mosè in Egitto and the bassoon one by Torriani on Lucia di Lammermoor) actually were the mainstay of the publishing activity of Francesco Lucca and Tito and Giulio Ricordi in Milan. Non-professional lovers of music ranged, in their mastery of the instruments, from amateurs to concert performers. So the instrumental fantasias were “moulded” to the patrons’ specific requirements, and nourished a constantly growing market. When, at the end of the 19th century, Lucca’s daughters sold their father’s plates to the Ricordi publishing house, the sum paid by Ricordi for this commercial assimilation was huge for that period: this shows that the market of amateur instrumentalists had become enormous. So the history of Pietro Morlacchi and Antonio Torriani coincides with the history of the success of the instrumental music genre in Italy. Thanks to the quality and liveliness of their virtuosic style, these two composers’ pieces are still quite enjoyable in a concert performance. In Italy the composers who reduced operas were almost always instrumentalists, and their patient musical craftsmanship did not separate instrumental mastery from the invention of bravura variations: in other words, composition and virtuosity coexisted and were the backbone of these works.

4C4228 MAGNARD,ALBERIC - La Musique de Chambre QUATUOR ELYSEE/ENSEMBLE INITIUM/WAGSCHAL,LAURENT/PAIDASSI,SOLENNE/ THOMAS,CAMILLE It was just a century ago that Albéric Magnard died. Moreover, the facts that earned him ‘Died for France’ status are known: Greeting German cavalry who had entered his estate in Baron with shots from his revolver, he was gunned down in turn and his house set afire, the blaze destroying many scores. Long ignored, Magnard has in the past few years joined the pantheon of post-Franckist composers. With Ropartz, d’Indy and others, he embodies what French music produced at the time: a combination of force and clarity, melodic and harmonic invention, and perfect mastery of orchestration. In addition, with Magnard there is the expression of total commitment and a desire to surpass himself. In chamber music, he left a limited legacy but one of a very high level, which Timpani has entrusted to a ‘young’ team: Laurent Wagschal and the winds of the Ensemble Initium, regular artists in the Timpani catalogue, as well as two talented string players — Solenne Païdassi (a CD of French sonatas with Wagschal for the Indésens label) and Camille Thomas (nominated for the most recent ‘Victoires de la Musique’ awards) — and the Quatuor Élysée, too infrequent on disc. Another guarantee of quality is the commentary by the leading Magnard specialist, Harry Halbreich, who lends not his pen but his voice for an additional disc, discussing works he knows better than anyone.

MARTINOV,YURY

Total time : 71’24 1 CD PPD : 12,95€

For Zig-Zag Territoires, Yury Martynov has undertaken the complete Beethoven symphonies in Liszt’s transcriptions on historic instruments. The third volume of that cycle came out in January 2014 and, like the previous instalments, has enjoyed great critical success. This new release bears witness to another aspect of Yury Martynov’s talent and art, this time grappling with a composer from the avant-garde of the first half of the 20th century, and on a resolutely modern Steinway. On the programme: works from the pre-war years (Sonata No.5, Pensées), as well as a ‘war’ work (Sonata No. 6) and the marvellous 12 pieces that make up the Music for Children, with which apprentice pianists are well familiar. This is therefore a recording that explores two registers quite present in Prokofiev’s work: rich, powerful writing contrasting with melodic, poetic writing.

‘Time and Place’ perfectly sums up Claire Martin’s jazz roots beginnings and the inventive, forward-thinking repertoire choices that have framed her enviable career. The majority of arrangements feature The Montpellier Cello Quartet, with whom Claire has developed a unique partnership since they first performed together in 2012. Together Claire and the quartet create a magical sound fusion of jazz-chamber music that encompasses new arrangements from an eclectic group of songwriters including Lennon & McCartney, George Gershwin, David Bowie and Thelonius Monk. With the connections borne of twenty-five years in the business Claire has commissioned imaginative new arrangements, including Joni Mitchell’s ‘Two Grey Rooms’ by renowned composer Mark Anthony Turnage. Pianist Joe Stilgoe guests on his own track ‘Lost For Words’ and delivers a distinctive arrangement of Lennon & McCartney’s ‘She’s Leaving Home’. There are also echoes of The Beatles’ ‘Eleanor Rigby’ on a new arrangement of David Bowie’s ‘The Man Who Sold The World’. Claire’s long-time partnership with Richard Rodney Bennett is acknowledged with both songwriting and arranging credits.

Jazz versions of classical opuses date back to the 1930’s. A piece titled Bach Goes to Town recorded by Benny Goodman and His Orchestra and arranged by Alec Templeton, one of the first attempts of interaction between jazz playing and Bach’s style, entered the jazz annals. In Russia, Leonid Utyosov’s orchestra not unsuccessfully worked with themes by Tchaikovsky and Rimsky-Korsakov. The big bands of Stan Kenton and Woody Herman sometimes used themes from classical pieces in their compositions as well. In the 1950’s and 1960’s, those trends found development in the so-called baroque jazz. Nevertheless, by the end of the 20th century, interaction between jazz idioms and the language of academic music became in most cases a sufficiently trite trick and almost lost the flavor of novelty. However, Sergei Zhilin’s trio’s new work Tchaikovsky in Jazz. The Seasons (reworked by Yuri Markin) has shown that the idea of jazzifying classical compositions is not just alive, but also at times able to deliver surprising results. Firstly, the choice of pieces proved to be absolutely accurate. Tchaikovsky’s The Seasons belongs to the repertoire of senior grades of children music schools and primary courses of music colleges. The numbers are hackneyed, habitual and even somewhat simple for advanced musicians.

NI6285 RCS Jazz : I’m ready now VARIOUS ARTISTS As Artistic Director of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland’s first full-time jazz course, it is my sincere pleasure to present to you our second year of graduating students. Jazz is a serious music and is a conduit to understanding all musical art forms. Whenever young musicians open their imaginations to improvisation they then have a skeleton key to open the door to any musical genre. It takes talent and dedication for sure; but it also requires imagination, application and strength of character. It’s seems hardly credible now that only a few short years ago students of jazz in Scotland had to leave their country in order to pursue their studies. Prior to 2009, there were no full-time jazz courses on offer at any of the Scottish educational establishments. Now, the first ever full-time jazz course in Scotland can boast that it is taking purposeful steps towards stemming that exodus of jazz talent from our country. Utsav, Jay, Chris, Jonathan, John and Scott have all evolved and matured as an ensemble throughout a demanding, but nevertheless hugely enjoyable four year jazz degree course. Here, they represent themselves with inventive, original compositions that certainly reflect their individual personalities. However, these tunes are also insights into their inspirations, aspirations and ambitions at the beginning of what we all hope are fruitful careers and an illuminating journey through jazz.

For this production, Christian Spuck was inspired by Claudio Monteverdi’s last opera, L’incoronazione di Poppea. The story of the marriage of the Emperor Nero and Poppea Sabina still brings a chill to audiences today, portraying as it does the cruel lust for power and passion at the court of the Roman ruler. In the end, all succumb to the elemental force of a totally amoral idea of «love», and the boundaries between reality and fiction become blurred. What began as a game becomes deadly serious when the explosive mix of emotions reveals its fateful consequences. Christian Spuck has created a compelling piece of experimental choreography from this remarkable opera plot, producing a ballet which incorporates film and spoken elements.

• Antonín Dvořák’s next to last opera draws its substance from the underwater wonderland of little mermaids, Undines and Melusines: Rusalka, a water nymph, wishes to become human in order to be loved by the young prince. Despite being warned against it, she asks the witch Ježibaba to help her. In order for her wish to be fulfilled, Rusalka must give up her voice and face eternal damnation if her love fails. • Jaroslav Kvapil’s libretto inspired Dvořák to compose a masterpiece, a compelling opera full of poignant lyricism and dramatic twists. • Ádám Fisher and Stefan Herheim masterfully present this ‘lyrical fairytale’ at La Monnaie, Belgium. • La Monnaie has been acclaimed best opera house of the year 2011 (Opernwelt) • In this widely acclaimed interpretation, the fairytale elements assume frighteningly realistic dimensions making this enchanting production a psychoanalytical study of male fantasies and female archetypes. • Includes 10-minute Behind-the-Scenes Bonus with Interviews with Stefan Herheim and others • Performers: Myrtò Papatanasiu, Pavel Černoch, Annalena Persson,; Willard White, Renée Morloc,...

• Composer André Tchaikowsky first made his mark in Great Britain as a concert pianist. Despite his immense success, Tchaikowsky’s real passion was for composition. “The Merchant of Venice”, after William Shakespeare’s play of that name, was to remain his only opera. • The score is intricate and dark, with moments of both brutality and lyricism, not to mention flashes of acerbic wit. It defies attribution to any one definite style of 20th-century compostion, intelligently drawing on Benjamin Britten, Igor Stravinsky and Claude Debussy. • The tried and trusted team behind Keith Warner and an elite cast make the posthumous premiere at this year’s Bregenz Festival “a restitution to remember” (London Telegraph) • “Under the direction of soundscaper Erik Nielsen this opera sounds wonderfully brilliant, light-footed, with comedic swing” (Die Zeit) • This is the World Premiere of this opera

Recorded live during the Aix-en-Provence Festival in July 2013, Cavalli’s Elena had not been performed for more than 350 years. The international press hailed this rediscovery as one of the major events on the lyric scene. With Jean-Yves Ruf ’s imaginative staging, served by an exceptional cast made up of young singers brought together by the Academy of the Aix Festival, this work is also sublimated by the talent of the instrumentalists of the Cappella Mediterranea and the theatrical talent of Leonardo García Alarcón. Elena relates the first adventures of Helen, the most beautiful woman in the world, coveted by numerous men including Menelaus, who disguises himself as an Amazon to approach her, and Theseus, who abducts her and tries to seduce her to the great displeasure of his legitimate fiancée, Hippolyta. Numerous colourful or tragic characters come to complicate the situations in this mythological farce.
