The 364 days that aren’t Earth Day

nd we’re not talking about just picking up trash or planting trees, as we did on the first Earth Day 40 years ago. The stakes are so much higher now. Global warming has become a planet-wide threat with a worst-case scenario so disruptive that human society as we know it would not be possible. Even the modest prediction of an average 9-degree temperature rise by 2100 still spells disaster for areas that are already hot. And science is becoming so clear that even deniers of human-caused global warming are coming around to an agnostic position on carbon controls. The rest of the world would experience increasingly severe drought, flooding and storms, more than even advanced industrial societies could handle. Yet what struck me about local Earth Day events this past week is not just a lack of urgency but the absence of this broader perspective. If conservationists are not able to refocus their movement on the single biggest environmental priority of the day -- radically slowing the growth of greenhouse gases -- who can? Most agree not only that global warming does deserve top priority but also that retrofitting existing homes and businesses to use less nonrenewable power is the most efficient and effective use of local dollars. Meanwhile, electricity from coal-fired plants

still dominates the power grid, millions of commuters still drive separately to work in gas guzzlers and entire countries like China essentially ignore international treaties calling for reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. In other words, going green alone isn’t going to work by itself. There needs to be national and international incentives and penalties in the area of carbon emissions that work across entire systems of transportation, power production and agriculture, among others. Two sound proposed solutions would be capand-trade controls on emissions or a carbon tax. But even if economists were to agree on one system, politicians worldwide must be convinced that the short-term economic pain of shifting away from fossil fuels is worth the long-term gain, which in some scenarios is literally the salvation of human society on the planet. And then, how fast a pace of change will various nation-states accept and how will they enforce covenants that are ineffective if major emitters like China refuse to play along? We need to rapidly push up public education on issues far beyond our local back yards, then add a component of political activism that the environmental movement has not seen in decades. We can certainly do our part each Earth Day. But what about the rest of the year?

Tierra futura

ara los 80 años del Día de la Tierra espero tener una buena conversación con mis hijas, y quizás también, con mis nietos. Nadie me asegura que tal cosa sucederá, a fin de cuentas el futuro es una ilusión que vanamente intentamos moldear, pero supongamos que tal momento llega. ¿Qué clase de Tierra tendremos? Los modelos climáticos son poco halagüeños, y si la historia reciente sirve de referencia, viviremos en un ambiente más hostil al actual. Por otro lado, probablemente aquella sea una humanidad más conciente de su lugar e interdependencia con la naturaleza. Quizás porque no les quedará más remedio. ¿Y hace 40 años no se dieron cuenta de lo que sucedía? me preguntarán los más pequeños. Tendré que explicarles que si ya es difícil planificar unas vacaciones familiares, en aquel entonces lograr un consenso global era casi imposible. Una respuesta chucuta para una generación que pagará nuestros platos rotos, cierto, pero que encierra una realidad: a comienzos del siglo XXI intentamos, por primera vez, orquestar un plan global de supervivencia. Y cada quien jala para su lado. Los creadores del Día de la Tierra, activis-

tas ambientales de los setenta, recuerdan que en ese entonces los problemas saltaban a la vista: smog, ríos pestilentes y lagos sin vida. Leyes nacionales cambiaron el panorama y países como Estados Unidos han logrado limpiar su medio ambiente, mientras que no es sino ahora cuando naciones como China se deterioran al ritmo acelerado de su revolución industrial. Y hoy, a diferencia de hace 40 años, los problemas son más sutiles y complejos: blanqueamiento de corales, calentamiento global y distribución del agua, entre otros. La única manera de superarlos es a través de la cooperación y la tecnología. Para ver el vaso medio lleno observo la conciencia ambiental en los niños. Para estos chicos el tema es tan natural como la Internet. Confío en que llegado el momento, cuando tengan un verdadero poder de decisión, procederán con mayor sabiduría de la que hemos tenido y obligados por las circunstancias tomarán mejores decisiones. Claro, dentro de 40 años parecerá demasiado tarde. Pero ese es el dilema del presente. ¿Mantenemos el curso o corregimos? ¿Pensamos en nuestra conveniencia inmediata o en el planeta de nuestros hijos?

Experts agree “Now is the time to buy” os agentes de bienes raíces están de acuerdo en que el 2008-09 fue una etapa difícil para el mercado, ya que fue cuando comenzó la crisis financiera global y muchos inversionistas se cosieron los bolsillos y decidieron esperar antes de invertir en Aruba. Al final del 2009, los analistas financieros internacionales empezaron a demostrar un muy cauteloso optimismo, y ya al final del primer trimestre, Aruba demostró un crecimiento del turismo relativamente robusto. Lo mejor del caso es que los que han esperado para invertir en Aruba, ahora pueden conseguir propiedades a precios muy reducidos, porque han estado en el mercado por más de un año. The real estate dry spell may prove very fortuitous for those who are considering purchasing a full time residence or a vacation home on Aruba, as online ads from various real estate concerns reveal that homes on the market for a year or more without success carry banners boasting substantial price reductions. A number of agents feel this may be the best time to buy, before the influence of a recovering economy sets prices rising again. Aruba offers several options for those wishing to purchase property. Aside from individual homes, the island now boasts a proliferation of gated communities and condo complexes in a wide price range that offer very desirable amenities such as concierge services and 24-hour security as part of the package.

Caretaker services will see that utilities are paid and repairs are effected in case of water damage or any unforeseen possibility, all for a very reasonable maintenance fee, thus guaranteeing a truly relaxing and worry free vacation upon arrival. A consensus by island real estate agents is that buyers will find the best bargains the further they get from the sea; waterfront homes demand the highest price tags for the least value. They advise potential buyers to be flexible, as there is no where on Aruba where you are very far from the sea, and there are other locations that offer stupendous views, such as a high hilltop more inland. Rene van der Spaan, of Century 21 on Aruba is one of the island’s longest standing and most experienced realtors. He shared his optimism for 2011 regarding the island’s recovering market, based on a “distinctive improvement during the first quarter of 2010 compared to 2009. The houses moving most right now are in the $100,000 bracket to $300,000, except for waterfront properties, which still retain their high price tags and are always in great demand. We are talking about a million dollars and up for an oceanfront home.” “Those who want a more luxurious abode with wonderful amenities will find great bargains further inland,” confirms Rene. “Spectacular homes with high price tags have dropped their

prices drastically-so that is the smart way to go for a really good buy.” TAXES AND REGULATIONS Regarding residency- one can spend a total of 180 days on Aruba per year without need of a residence permit, when you purchase a property here, but you should check with your realtor for all specific legalities. Aruba, at present, only requires land tax from home owners, which is based on the selling price of the home. The first $34,000 is deducted, and then the tax is calculated at per $1,000 of the purchase price. A home that cost $234,000 dollars would be taxed $800 or 1,400 Arubian florins in “Grondbelasting” annually. Homes that are constructed on lease land would also require the owner to pay an annual lease fee; leases can be transferred over to the new owner and you need not be an Aruban citizen to purchase a home or property. Transfer taxes are paid by the buyer; they are calculated on a sliding scale according to the purchase price and can range from 5% to 8%. The notary handling the sale will also investigate if there are any liens on the property and will require a 1% fee for the transfer deed and another 1% for the processing of a mortgage. This does not include the filing fees required by government agencies.

no de los eventos más premiados de Aruba, comenzara el viernes 4 de Junio con un evento de alfombra roja y será abierto por el mega estrella del cine, Richard Gere, tomando lugar en el los cines del centro comercial Paseo Herencia, en Palm Beach Aruba. Podrán esperar a los paparazis y muchas luces de cámaras para este evento de películas de estreno y premios de cine en donde también podrán conocer actores internacionalmente reconocidos. La noche anterior, habrá un festival de comida y es gratis para que todos puedan deleitarse con los platos típicos de Aruba. ne of the most exciting, star-studded events to grace Aruba’s shores begins on Friday, June 4 with a red carpet event and welcome by the official host, megastar Richard Gere, at The Cinemas in the Paseo Herencia Mall. Expect paparazzi and cameras flashing for the premiere screening and Lifetime Award presentation which heralds a week of fine films and dialogs for fans and press with internationally acclaimed filmmakers and stars. The night preceding the premiere event, Paseo Herencia Entertainment and Shopping Center, hub for the AIFF, will host an informal food festival where all are invited to experience an authentic taste of Aruba, without cover charge. l Ministro de Turismo, Trabajo y Transporte, Otmar Oduber, anunció que Aruba y Venezuela, por fin, llegaron a un acuerde para comenzar los vuelos privados de Venezuela a Aruba. Este acuerdo fue concretado durante su reciente visita a Venezuela y se espera que tenga un favorable impacto para el turismo de Aruba. Los acuerdos bilaterales existentes entre Aruba y Venezuela se habían suspendido, ya que los vuelos privados fueron prohibidos por el presidente de Venezuela, Hugo Chavez. Esto ha tenido un efecto negativo en el turismo venezolano. Aruba había estado sintiendo los efectos en todos los sectores ya que los venezolanos siempre han sido el segundo mercado de más importancia para el turismo y la economía de Aruba. El nuevo acuerdo fue suscrito entre Oduber y Maria Salazar, directora del servicio de

aviación civil venezolana, Inac. Hasta el momento de publicar, Hola Caribe aun no ha tenido información concreta de cuándo comenzarán los vuelos, ni cuáles aerolíneas ofrecerán estos servicios. Recientemente les habían impuesto a los turistas venezolanos una cuota de sólo US$500 en sus tarjetas de crédito cuando viajaban a Aruba. De lo contrario, cuando viajan para la Republica Dominicana, Panamá y Miami es $5,000 . El Ministro pidió que les permitan a los venezolanos tener la misma cuota cuando viajen a Aruba de $5,000, pero aun no se concretado ningún acuerdo. Además en su visita, Oduber contrató a la agencia de publicidad ARS, en Venezuela, para que promuevan el destino de Aruba, la agencia trabajará en conjunto con la oficina de turismo de Aruba para este esfuerzo.

As a result, the number of tourists from Venezuela had declined substantially since then. Aruba was feeling the impact f because the Venezuelans have been the second-largest tourist group on the island for many years. The new agreements were made between Oduber and Maria Salazar, the director of the Venezuelan aviation service Inac. The charter flights are expected to resume but, as per publishing date of Hola Caribe, information was not available on a start date of which airlines will be offering charter flights. During his recent visit, the Minister also discussed stimulating tourism from

Venezuela and discussed with government of Venezuela financial restrictions that the government had recently imposed on Venezuelans traveling to Aruba. Venezuelans are only allowed to spend a maximum amount of 500 dollars with their credit card. However, they are allowed to spend up to 5000 dollars when traveling to the Dominican Republic, Panama or Miami. Oduber requested that the same arrangement be given to Aruba as well, but no official agreements have been made on this as yet. In order to stimulate the Venezuelan market, Oduber has contracted the marketing company ARS Publicidad, to promote Aruba in Venezuela and will be working closely with the Aruba Tourism Authority.

na de las mas importantes conferencias interactivas de Aruba es la Conferencia Anual de Turismo (ATCA), que consiste de tres días de contactos internacionales entre las entidades turísticas de Aruba, ATA. Y la asociación de hoteles de Aruba AHATA, en representación del sector público y privado, y sus socios norteamericanos. Este año, casi 90 delegados, representantes de aerolíneas, operadores turísticos, mayoristas y compañías que ofrecen viajes a través del internet, acudieron a la conferencia entre el 13 y el 16 de Abril en el Westin Aruba Resort, y pudieron disfrutar de artes de niños locales en la galería del Westin. Uno de los puntos más importantes que se discutieron fue la restructuración de las entidades turísticas de Aruba; que serían privatizadas en Enero del 2011, con lo cual, los expertos en mercadeo podrán ahora tomar decisiones más rápidas y tendrán más autonomía. Por primera vez, el presupuesto de mercadeo del gobierno de Aruba y la Asociación de hoteles (AHATA) tendrá solo un fondo, que se llamara el Aruba Tourism Marketing Fund., que ayudará y brindará continuidad y estabilidad a la promoción de Aruba como destino, dice el

ministro del turismo Otmar Oduber. El Ministro ha establecido un Cónsul Turístico, el vicepresidente del parlamento Paul Croes, administrado por Myrna Jansen, directora anteriormente de ATA, Sanju Luidens-Daryanani, ex directora de mercadeo de AHATA. ATA también fue reestructurado y un comité de tres administradores: Frits Israel, director de mercadeo de ATA, Gina LopezGnecco, ex directora asistente y gerente de relaciones públicas de ATA, y Atrid Muller, Gerente anterior de Divi Phoenix Resort compartirán la gerencia de la agencia. También anunciaron el regreso del logo de Aruba con el lema de Aruba “Una isla Feliz”. El gobierno anuncio que tiene casi $7 millones de presupuesto para promover Aruba como destino y esto representa un aumento de 33% al presupuesto del 2009. El Ministro Oduber le dijo al los delegados que “Su misión respecto a Aruba es proveer un producto de turismo ofreciendo un balance entre su crecimiento económico, su infraestructura social y sus recursos naturales, y en el bienestar de la población. Una buena experiencia de la isla para sus visitantes será la primera preocupación”. Expresó que su política se basa en la filosofía, “ Un Aruba dushi Biba ta un Aruba dushi pa Bishita,” que traduce a “Una Aruba buena para vivir y buenisma para visitar.”

ne of Aruba’s longest standing interactive marking traditions is the Annual Tourism Conference Aruba, ATCA, consisting of three days of networking between the island’s tourism entities, Aruba Tourism Authority-ATA, and the Aruba Hotel and Tourism AssociationAHATA, representing the public and private sectors, respectively, and their major North American travel partners. This year, close to ninety delegates representing major airlines, tour operators and wholesalers and online travel sites attended the conference from April 13 through 16. Delegates were welcomed on the first night at the Westin Aruba Resort, where they were able to enjoy the artistic efforts of Aruban children on display in the Westin Gallery. The important business of the General Assembly followed on Wednesday morning, April 14. In September of 2009, Aruba held elections which resulted in a complete change of government; the resulting and extensive changes in Aruba’s tourism policy under a new Minister of Tourism, Transport and Labor, Otmar Oduber, were introduced during the opening session. Minister Oduber outlined a restructuring of Aruba’s principal tourism entities; not only will the ATA be privatized as of January 1, 2011, allowing its marketing experts greater autonomy and speed in the decision makingprocess, but the two agencies will be more closely linked financially. A Memorandum of Understanding signed between Aruba’s government and AHATA will go into effect July 1, 2010. For the first time, the marketing budget of the government and AHATA will become one fund, the Aruba Tourism Marketing Fund. Beginning May 1, Aruba’s room tax will be 7.5 %. On July 1, the 2% fee now charged by AHATA will be converted into room tax, for a total of 9.5%. “This room tax will flow into the Aruba Tourism Marketing Fund and will be

earmarked to guarantee continuity and stability in the marketing of the destination,” stated Minister Oduber. The Minister has also established a Permanent Tourism Committee, with Vice President of Parliament Paul Croes administrating and staffed by individuals such as Myrna Jansen, former Director of ATA and Sanju Luidens- Daryanani, formally Director of Marketing for AHATA. ATA management was also restructured, and a committee of three, consisting of Frits Israël, ATA Marketing Director, Gina Lopez-Gnecco, former Assistant Director and Head of P/R for ATA, and Astrid Muller, former GM of the Divi Phoenix Resort will share the leadership of the agency. Also unveiled was a new Aruba logo emblazoned on the tee shirts distributed to delegates and worn by island representatives. A refashioned Aruba.com was previewed, which was launched on Friday, April 16, and it was announced Aruba will return to its branding as “One Happy Island” after the past year’s transitional program of “90,000 Friends you haven’t met yet.” Minister Oduber revealed that the economic upheaval of 2009 and the resulting decrease in spending by consumers has prompted the government to allot a twelve million florin (just under seven million dollars) or 33% augmentation to the ATA budget. Minister Oduber told delegates “My vision is for Aruba to provide a sustainable tourism product by offering a balance between economic growth, social infrastructure and natural resources with the wellbeing of the population and our visitor’s experience as the central focus” He stated this policy is based on the philosophy “Un Aruba dushi pa Biba ta un Aruba dushi pa Bishita,” which, roughly translates into “An Aruba where it’s wonderful to live, is also wonderful to visit”.

Once again this year, a very popular Bonaire tradition will return to the island, when the Sixth Annual Bonaire Heineken Jazz Festival takes place from May 27 through 30, 2010. A variety of musical styles will be presented with bands from Brazil, Cuba, the United States, and The Netherlands in different venues around Bonaire as these internationally known jazz musicians mingle with the best musical talent Bonaire has to offer in this sixth year of the annual event. As in past years, the festival will kick off at the beautiful and romantic location of Fort Oranje on May 27 with an evening of Jazz and Poetry. Then, on May 28th and 29th, the two main concerts will take place at the Tipsy Seagull at the Plaza Resort. This year’s top attraction will be the world renowned trumpeter, Arturo Sandoval, performing with his seven-piece band. Arturo is originally from Cuba, but now lives in the USA. Also Manny Moriera de Brasil performing will be Manny

Moreira from Brazil, BEKU from the United States, Joke Bruijs with Frits Landesberg from The Netherlands, and Henk van Twillert with Tjako van Schie, also from The Netherlands. These performers will be joined by Bonaire’s best local musicians: the Cabaco Trio, the Silver Bullet Steelband, the New Generation Dancers, and Kaña Brabu, offering a combination of varying styles of jazz, all with their own character. For fans who just cannot get enough, jam sessions with many of the musicians will be held at Sense, just across the street from the Plaza Resort Bonaire, starting at 11:30 PM on Friday and Saturday. The always popular Jazz Brunch takes place on Sunday, May 30th at the Divi Flamingo Resort, where musicians participating in the festival, along with other musicians and singers, will provide a spectacular jam session while guests enjoy a delicious brunch.

l mes de Abril fue muy excitante para Aruba, Curacao y Bonaire; Mayo también lo será ya que abra muchas actividades tales como el festival de Cine que se estrenará en Aruba por primera vez y vendrán muchas estrellas del cine. Los hoteles de lujos y centros comerciales se preparan para celebrar las fiestas de galas. Bonaire también tiene este mes un Festival de Jazz con Arturo Sandoval y otros artistas famosos y un festival de verano con muchas actividades al aire libre que les brindará la oportunidad de tener un gran escape de la cuidad! Curaçao ya tienen su propia bolsa de valores y me parece muy interesante para las Antillas Holandesas. Los locales están muy contentos de tener el primer festival de North Sea Jazz que les traerá celebridades grandes a la isla. Estamos muy contentos de estar abordo de la aerolínea local Tiara, ha tenido gran éxito y tiene unos empleados chéveres. También hemos agregado la aerolínea Surinam a nuestra lista. Hola Caribe pronto anunciara su nueva asociación con una empresa en Miami que les podrá ofrecer sus servicios de medios interactivos que incluyen producciones de televisión, eventos y entretenimiento en línea, y soluciones de e-marketing innovadoras. Pero la noticia principal es que los vuelos privados de Venezuela a Aruba regresan gracias al Ministro de Turismo Otmar Oduber, esto será muy bueno para la economía de Aruba. Esperemos que esta buena noticia llegue a las otras islas vecinas y que las restricciones en las tarjetas de crédito, la cual la está negociando el Ministro, tenga un resultado favorable. El Día de Las Madres, se lo quiero dedicar a mi madre que fue tan buena conmigo y no me podrá acompañar más en este día. A todas las otras madres les deseo un feliz día también.

his past month has been a very exciting time for Aruba, Curacao and Bonaire, and the month of May will be too. A lot of activities going on: star-studded film festival coming soon to Aruba and a lot of preparation and planning going on at Aruba’s luxury hotels and local malls where the parties and “after parties” will be held for the First Film fest to come to Aruba. Bonaire has a great Jazz festival this month with top jazz artists and an exciting summer fest that they have announced which appears to offer a great escape from the city life, and for that matter any life! The new buzz in Curacao is that they now have a stock exchange, great for the Netherland Antilles; and locals are all very excited about their first grand North Sea Jazz Festival, proudly announcing big name celebrities coming to the island. And for Hola Caribe, we are pleased to be onboard Tiara Airlines, they are great people and have done a brilliant job with this airline; we are thankful to their wonderful staff. Additionally, we have added Surinam Airways to our list of airlines. Hola Caribe will soon announce their new venture which will offer interactive media services to clients including TV production, events and entertainment on line, very innovation e-marketing solutions coming soon. But the top news story is the big score for Aruba with the return of the charter flights from Venezuela. I congratulate the Minister of Tourism in Aruba, Otmar Oduber for a job well done, as the Venezuelan tourism market will boom again and that is terrific news for Aruba as they have been fundamental to this economy. We hope that the good news will spread soon to their neighboring islands too and that the pending negotiations of the Minister in regards to their spending restriction will also have a favorable outcome. And in recognition of mother’s day, I want to take a moment to give thanks to my mother who had unconditional love for me and is unfortunately not here on Mother’s Day 2010 , and to all the mothers out there that deserve not only a day, but the whole month of thanks and recognition. www.elvenezolanonews.com
