LE CHÂTEAU %&4 &/'"/54 (CDE) Ages 4+ -10 Boarding ages 6 -10 STUDY Our international environment encourages children’s curiosity about other languages and cultures. All CDE activities are designed to help children understand and use familiar words and phrases in their target language, which helps them become more comfortable in their new surroundings. Class sizes are kept at 4-8 students, allowing for individual attention. Along with teacher-led games and lessons, children work both alone and in groups to make presentations and lead discussions in front of their classmates. Public speaking helps improve their confidence, and allows them to play with both language and nonverbal communication.

English as an Additional Language

As English is the principal language of the program, our EAL students quickly improve their skills. Alongside classroom activities, children hear, speak, and interact in English for most of their day, both with adults and with other children.

Italian

Ticino is an ideal location to expose children to the Italian language. Our local staff and many of our summer staff members speak the language and encourage students to use newly-acquired words whenever possible.

Language Enrichment

Communication begins in the classroom but continues in the real world. Special activities in each language enhance the children’s learning. Activities include cooking classes, visiting the Bear Cave at Monte Generoso, and touring the Herman Hesse Museum.

PLAY Performing Arts

Music is a major component of our program, and children spend at least an hour a day singing in various languages. Children who learn to sing and play-act in another language soon feel more familiar with it. Along with singing, our 7

Weekend Clubs

Excursions

Our special weekend clubs give children the opportunity to participate in an activity in groups of four which encourages B TQJSJU PG DPOWFSTBUJPO BOE DPPQFSBUJPO 'PS CPBSEJOH students only.

Time off-campus gives children the opportunity to experience and explore new surroundings while feeling safe and secure with their friends and counselors. Children also enjoy a camping trip, where they stay overnight in tents, swim in a river, and roast marshmallows by a campfire.

Club activities include cooking, paddleboarding on Lake Lugano, rock climbing, hiking, and making art with clay and wood.

Visit a falconry in Locarno, swim at the lido in Ascona on Lake Maggiore, tour the Swiss Transport Museum in Lucerne.

Introducing children to the world Watching children from around the globe play, learn, and grow together is moving and inspiring. CDE is proud to attract children from numerous countries and cultures whose curiosity about each other’s worlds soon melts into friendships. Children learn tolerance and appreciation for PUIFS DVMUVSFT BOE JEFBT ɨSPVHI TUVEZ BOE QMBZ UIFZ share their stories with one another, learning that we’re all different but we’re also very similar. Le Château des Enfants blends traditional camp activities with language learning and the performing arts within a safe and nurturing environment. Art is an important part of the Minnows program and arts and crafts projects are integrated into language classes as well as other activities that occur throughout the day. Children enjoy exploring various art forms, and create colorful images using many techniques and materials.

Excursions Off-campus activities are important to our young Minnows. A typical selection of excursions includes a trip to Swissminiatur, which teaches the children about the country of Switzerland; riding the Lugano trenino around the city; visiting the charming Bellinzona castles; and joining the CDE children on their camping trip, sharing activities such as splashing around in an alpine stream and roasting marshmallows. Minnows is an individualized program which inspires young children to make friends and explore the world around them in a safe and encouraging environment. 11

MIDDLE SCHOOL PROGRAM (MSP) Ages 11-13

STUDY Languages English as an Additional Language (EAL) MSP offers an exciting, intensive learning environment for students eager to improve their English. With courses from beginner to advanced literature and academic writing, the EAL curriculum doesn’t stop after class time ends. Students use English in all aspects of the program, from sports and BDUJWJUJFT UP GBNJMZ TUZMF NFBMT ɨFZ BSF FODPVSBHFE UP become comfortable and confident in their language skills.

Designed especially for this age group, this course introduces children to conversational Italian which they are able to use in realworld situations as they explore the sites, activities, scenery, and shops in the area. Students build confidence in themselves as they receive rigorous training in singing, acting, dance, and public speaking. PLAY Sports and Activity Tracks take place two afternoons a

week and encourage students to try new things and challenge themselves. A typical selection of tracks includes archery, windsurfing, climbing, waterskiing, recreational tennis, video making, and art. Students choose and focus on only one track during the session.

MSP Sports Clubs are for athletes who want to strengthen

their existing skills. Children train with certified professional coaches who have tailored their teaching to this age group. Clubs meet three times a week, and therefore students in clubs cannot partake in other Sports and Activity tracks or in Saturday activities, because clubs meet at the same time as these events. Enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis, and participation is at an extra cost.

Tennis Club is for students who wish to enhance and improve their existing skills. Students are issued a kit and are expected to bring their own racquet. Coach-to-student ratio JT XJUI B NBYJNVN PG TUVEFOUT

Golf Club is designed for young golfers who want to improve their game. Students play three times per week and practice their skills on the driving range, pitch-and-putt, and main course at Panorama Golf in Varese. Equipment can be provided if necessary. Limited to 8 students. AC Milan Junior Camp is an

intensive soccer program under the supervision of coaches from the SFOPXOFE "$ .JMBO $MVC ɨJT JT BO exciting opportunity for children to learn high-quality soccer skills with some of the best coaches in the sport. Players are issued an exclusive AC Milan soccer kit.

Armani Junior Basketball Club challenges young players to improve their individual skills while improving their teamwork and tactical strategies. Coaches from the Olimpia Milan Armani Junior Program are on court with the students and expect top effort for the entire two hours. Players are issued an exclusive basketball kit.

Saturday Afternoon Leadership Activities give students the opportunity to work as a team to achieve a certain goal or objective. Using their personal strengths and

talents, students from a variety of countries and cultures join forces and learn about others and themselves. Past events have included boat-building and a regatta on Lake Lugano, an Olympics event, and on-campus leadership activities.

EXPLORE Travel Days are reserved for travel and discovery at

a variety of European destinations and enhance the adventurous spirit. Trips also foster community as students explore a destination together.

Day trips explore the beauty and culture of nearby destinations. All trips include special activities off the typical tourist track, immersing students into the culture

of Switzerland and Italy. Recent urban destinations have included Milan, Como, and Lucerne. More adventurous students can go canyoning, caving, or visit Val Verzasca. Cultural destinations have included the Ballenberg openair museum and the Borromean Islands. Students participate in some of these day trips, depending on various factors.

Overnight trips allow for exploration further afield.

Dorm Life MSP boarders room with students from

different countries and with a differing mother tongue. Dorm life gives students a chance to bond with others through a variety of activities, from movie nights to sing-a-longs. Children are housed in recently-renovated facilities in beautiful old buildings with inspiring views of Lake Lugano and the mountains. Because some children are away from home for the first time, we ensure that all students entrusted to our care feel comfortable and supported as they adjust to our community.

TASIS SUMMER PROGRAM (TSP) Ages 14 -18

STUDY TSP offers a variety of courses for students that challenge and encourage them to stretch their limits. Our TSP courses offer students the chance to learn and grow alongside friends from around the world.

LANGUAGE COURSES Language learning is an important component of TSP. Small class sizes ensure individual attention, and students are given the opportunity to practice their target language outside of class. Students take placement tests upon arrival and receive a full academic report, including letter grade, course description, and teacher comments, at the end of the session.

English as an Additional Language (EAL) TSP offers an intensive and challenging opportunity for English-language learners to improve their skills. As the program’s language is English, language skills are reinforced by daily interaction with friends and staff. Courses cater to all levels, from beginner to advanced literary analysis and writing.

EAL Academic Writing ɨJT DPVSTF JT JOUFOEFE GPS TUVEFOUT XIP QMBDF JOUP PVS highest levels of English as an Additional Language and wish to improve their academic writing skills. Intensive Italian Lugano, in Italian-speaking Switzerland, is the perfect location for students interested in studying Italian language and culture. Many of our staff speak Italian and encourage students to use the language outside the classroom. Excursions in the local area and further afield offer students the opportunity to practice in real-world situations.

(for language learners only) TSP offers dance, drama, photography, and studio art courses that use the target language in situations outside the classroom. Taught by professional enthusiasts, these classes are challenging and fun, and allow students to try something new or develop their talents. Digital Photography Taught by a professional photographer, this course introduces students to the basics of digital photography, CPUI DBNFSB TLJMMT BOE JNBHF FEJUJOH TPGUXBSF ɨF picturesque surroundings of the campus, combined with excursions to destinations throughout Europe, give students the opportunity to practice their skills. Architecture & Design The design of the best houses and chairs proceeds from the organic principle that it’s the inside that counts. The outside is merely shell, insulation, or packaging. You must work from the inside out. A unique course created by Master Teacher Mark Aeschliman, Architecture & Design introduces students to these exciting disciplines. Students are introduced to UIF IJTUPSZ PG BSU BOE BSDIJUFDUVSF GSPN $MBTTJDBM UP UI century, then Art Nouveau to the present, which includes sketching from slides and discussion. Practical work includes an investigation workbook, a class presentation, and creating a variety of models which are exhibited at the "SUT 'FTUJWBM EVSJOH UIF ĂŤOBM XFFL PG UIF QSPHSBN Class trips include a visit to Weil-am-Rhein in Germany to explore the renowned Vitra Design Museum and works by Ando, Gehry, SANAA, Hadid, Siza, Herzog & de Meuron, and Piano. Students also see the Triennale Design Museum in Milan and take short daytrips to Como, Bellinzona, and Riva San Vitale. Other TASIS Summer Programs

TASIS English Language Program is located on the TASIS Additional Language from beginning to advanced levels for students aged 12-18 along with sports every afternoon. Weekends include trips to Wales, Edinburgh, Paris and EuroDisney. Students share accommodation with TASIS England Summer School students thereby providing many opportunities to develop their Englishprogram o ers two three-week and one six-week sessions. o ers an intensive three-week design and cultural experience for students is for students who have a strong interest in the arts or who program’s ideal location, just north of Provence, provides extensive opportunities for excursions that draw on the cultural richness of this fascinating area.

TASIS Dorado Spanish Summer Program Located in the

idyllic area of Dorado Beach, Puerto Rico, the TASIS Dorado Spanish Summer Program (TDSSP) o ers an intensive 3-week

use of the TASIS Dorado purpose-built campus with its excellent facilities for creative arts, sports and activities. In addition to a wide range of excursions which draw on the cultural riches and natural beauty of the island, including historic Old San Juan and exploration and ecology course through its association with the Jean-Michel Cousteau’s Ambassadors of the Environment Center.
