This composition is the result of the fusion of different decorative elements that belong to different cultures, on their geographical connotation as well as in their historical periods. Pompeii and Sardinia, it may seem a gamble. With this composition we wanted to dare to combine the geometrical elements of the walls and floors that characterised the houses of Pompeii with those of the typical Sardinian geometrical textile patterns. The background is composed by a geometrical decoration, which incorporates the Pompeian mosaics, black on a white background, the focus of the design is a star composed of elements in Sardinian style, bright colours, blue, purple and black. The whole composition is framed by geometric patterns in optical art style. This makes the canvas dynamic, accomplishing a contemporary and unique style.

This pattern is inspired by the ace of Clubs of the Neapolitan playing cards deck. The Neapolitan cards deck are in ‘Spanish’ style, and are among the most common regional cards deck in Italy. The ace of clubs is represented as a wooden club with a decorative strip of leaves. The ace of clubs is a symbol linked to the element of fire, which it derives its strength from. It symbolises manhood, the phallus and male fertility. It is the perfect item for those who strongly believe they are the creators of their own destiny and believe in their abilities. Another meaning of the ace of clubs is action, the ability to transform the thought into something tangible. It also symbolises progress, adventure, surprise and potential. In this design the ace of clubs is repeated to follow a circular trajectory, creating a wheel, which overlaps, thus giving an effect of movement. The colour palette is a display of bright shades.
BALLU TUNDU S I L K T W I L L // 9 0 X 9 0 HAND-MADE HEM
The composition of the silk scarf Ballu Tundu is inspired by the geometrical motifs of the traditional Sardinian textile. The idea is to extrapolate these decorative elements, obtained through the handloom, almost three-dimensional, and give them a new connotation, intervening mainly on the colours and fabrics on which they will be imprinted. One of the objectives is to maintain throughout, the leitmotif of the ancient Sardinian textile tradition, but with a contemporary twist, juxtaposing geometric elements in strong contrast both in shape and colour, greater prominence is given to the fulcrum of the design which is cleverly framed.

In the four corners of the design, the triangles, which contain a pattern with a 3D effect, make a strong statement. The drawing depicts the decorations of the floor of Trittolemo’s House in Pompeii, which is made with rare pieces of coloured limestone. For this composition, different shades of grey were chosen to create a game of shadows that accentuate three-dimensionality.

This texture draws inspiration from the Ace of Coins of Neapolitan playing cards. These cards are of “Spanish” style and they are among the most common regional cards in Italy. The Ace of Coins is represented by an eagle with two heads that separate at the neck and face opposite directions. This symbol was generally used for the “Golden Leader”, also known as the leader of the Empire. The dual eagle identifies, in fact, the union of the two empires. At the base of this texture there is the restyling of the drawing of the eagle’s symbol, by choosing a palette of bright, very contrasting colours, placed on a white background to highlight the entire composition even more.

The drawing is composed by the pattern which takes its inspiration from, the seed of club of the playing cards deck of Treviso. The circular trajectory forms a mandala which is repeated in the canvas. This pattern has a background composed by optical, black / white geometrical shapes which enhance the main element. The dynamism of the composition increases by a decisive detachment of the elements. The two red stripes on the edge, frame and emphasise the patterns, this allows to maintain both a common thread with the design of the stick, and to increase the contrast with the optical geometrical background.

The texture is inspired by the geometrical patterns of the Sardinian rugs, not intended as a classic rug to be laid on the floor, but as a textile element to be placed of the traditional Sardinian chest. In the past when a woman was to marry, the family would set aside, throughout the years, all the items of linen needed in the newlywed marital home. All the precious items were then placed inside the preciously inlaid chest. The chest was itself covered by the "coperibanga" or "copericascia" (the chest-cover, or case-cover). Later the same artwork will be reproduced on other items: tapestries, rugs, blankets, cushions, saddlebags, curtains.

NCIGNĂ€ S I L K T W I L L // 4 5 X 4 5 HAND-MADE HEM This composition was formed with the fusion of two ancient matrix which are historically distant from each other: geometrical mosaics of Pompeian houses and drawings in the Optical Art style. The Optical Art movement was a sixties trend that developed into the seventies of the 10th Century, it is often included in the larger movement of Kinetic art, with in-depth studies of the two-dimensional illusion. The intent of the artists of optical art was mainly to create optical illusions. At the beginning the Optical Art sees the use of black and white patterns only, later it incorporates colours, always in order to offer the viewer two-dimensional art work that give the impression of movement, of hidden or flashing images, of shapes that swell or deform. The original Pompeii was an ancient city, which history dates back to the IX century BC., only to end in 79 AD, when, following the eruption of Vesuvius, it was entirely covered under a blanket of ash and lapilli about six meters high. The excavations of the city which begun in 1748, brought to light an archaeological site that became part of the UNESCO World Heritage Listed in 1997. Thanks to the archives and archaeological sites, today it is possible to admire the fascinating geometrical mosaics that decorate the floors and walls of the Domus Pompeiane. This series of compositions that draw inspiration from the Pompeian mosaics and Optical Art, have predominantly black and white patterns, with the addition, in some cases, of shades of grey. To make the combination work, the design maintains an extremely geometrical style. The use of the optical style art and the three-dimensionality of some geometrical decorations found on the of the floors of the Domus Pompeiane, the designs are far from static.

This texture is inspired by the seed of Cups playing cards deck from Bergamo. Most Italian playing cards are distinguished by region. They have ancient origins and their styles are linked to the territory and the dominations by foreign powers throughout the course of history. We can consider the cards as a mirror of Italian regional tradition and folklore. The ace of cups, depicts a fountain shape symbol which is inspired by the emblem of the House of Sforza. This is also seen in the cards from Trento and Brescia. The design of the seed of cup has been extrapolated from its context, modified, keeping unchanged the style that distinguishes it, but with a new touch that plays above all with colours. In this series of patterns the design of the cup is depicted with a black outline and a white fill, on a coloured background.

This symbol derives from the Pentacle, which is a magical symbol, represented by a five-pointed star generally inscribed in a circle. The design is composed of a tone-on-tone background pattern with a denier theme. In the four corners we find the symbol of the coin superimposed irregularly and randomly, at the centre there is an element that resembles a flower. The frames were added to create a contrast. The chosen colours for this composition are warm tones of yellow and ocher.

The texture is inspired by the seed of cups of Bolognese playing cards deck, (Primiera Bolognese). The Bolognese cards deck are in Italian style with a rather narrow shape. Together with the Trevisane cards deck are the longest cards in Italy. This deck derives directly from the tarot or bolognese tarot deck. The seed of cups and that of coins, belongs to the Seeds called SHORTS. To enhance this very compact design of the "cups", we used a very contrasting colour palette: golden yellow, electric blue and fuchsia, in addition a restyling of the design was done adding some elements that enrich the composition.

Sardinian textile art is a fascinating heritage with very distant origins that date back already from the first prehistoric eras; in order to speak about actual canvases though, one must wait for the end of the 1800s and the first years of the 1900s, when the first weaving machines appear. Each family possessed one and this brought about a supportive social life with artisanal work becoming a source of subsistence and wealth. Ornamental patterns are distinguished in four main groups: floral and plant patterns, those that involve the animal world, heraldic patterns and geometric patterns. It is geometric patterns that inspired the creation of this composition that wishes to communicate the warmth of antique craftsmanship.

The texture draws inspiration from the suit of swords that belongs to Bergamo’s playing cards, which belong to the “Northern Italy” group. Northern swords are curved like sabres and the true origin of this shape is most likely to be found in the scimitars depicted in ancient Arabic cards: these styles seem to be an evolution of the first decks that were imported to Italy and Spain by the Arabs. “Scimitar” is a term used in heraldry to indicate a sword, particularly a curved one, like a sabre. The scimitar is a Turkish sabre and it symbolizes a trophy taken from the enemy. Orange and purple, two contrasting and bright colours, were chosen in this palette.
