INDUCTION Year 12 Visual Communication and Design Unit 3 & 4 Welcome Class of 2013 The main purpose of both this unit is to understand the process designers employ to structure their thinking and communicate ideas with clients, target audiences, other designers and specialists.

Students will investigate and analyze existing visual communications, they will gain insight into how the selection of methods, media, materials and the application of design elements and design principles can create effective visual communications for specific audiences and purposes. Through investigation and experimentation, using both manual and digital methods, media and materials, they will make informed decisions for the development of their own design ideas and concepts. Â

Unit 3 : design thinking & practice Outcome 1: Analysis and Practice in context

Explore a range of existing visual communications in the communication, environmental and industrial design fields.

Outcome 2: Design Industry practice Investigate how the design process is applied in industry to create visual communications Outcome 3: Developing a brief and generating ideas An understanding of three stages of the design process: development of a brief, research and generation of ideas. Â

Unit 4: design development & presentation Outcome 1: Development of design concepts Focus on the design process stages of the development of concepts and refinement. Using separate design processes, students develop and refine design concepts that satisfy each of the needs of the brief established in Unit 3.

Outcome 2: Final presentations Final stage in the design process, the resolution of presentations. Produce two distinct final visual communications, which are the refinements of the concepts developed for Outcome 1.

Outcome 3: Evaluation and explanation Devise a pitch to present their visual communication

End of year examination Description Students will be required to answer a series of questions related to Units 3 and 4. The questions will focus on: • Knowledge of drawing methods and skill in drawing and rendering; • Development of solutions to visual communication tasks; • Analysis and evaluation of examples of visual communication; • Processes and procedures used to produce visual communications.

Units 3 and 4 are a sequence in which the key knowledge and skills of the study are consolidated over the year. In particular, Unit 3 Outcome 1 drawing methods, including orthogonal, paraline and perspective, skills in rendering and the ability to apply the design process in the production of visual communications, are further developed and refined in Unit 4. Also the generation of a design brief and the first three stages of the design process commence in Unit 3 and continue through to Unit 4.

The end-of-year examination provides the opportunity for students to demonstrate a better understanding of and practical skills in the production of visual communications.

The examination will contribute 35 per cent.

For Year 12 Visual Communication and Design, you will need to bring: • • • •

A display folder (For Handouts) An A3 Ring binder and plastic pockets for your developmental folder/visual diary Any magazines and research material you may have lying around at home A pencil case/tool kit with supplies for drawing!! i.e. a pencil, an eraser, a biro, a ruler, colour pencils, etc…equipment!!!!!!!

Over the holidays Students are requested over the Christmas holidays to start building a folio of freehand drawings and to gather ideas for the application of a design folio. This could be inspiration found from magazines, The Internet (make sure you reference everything!) drawings, books etc.

Organise your ideas/references into the three fields of design 1.

Communication - presents visual information for communication purposes Includes Graphic Design, Information Design, Digital and Web Design, Advertising, Print Publication/Book illustration, Typographic Design, Package/surface Design and Logo Design and Brand Identity.

Environmental - presents visual information to communicate information about built/constructed environments Includes, Architectural Design, Interior Design, Landscape Design, Set Design, Exhibition/Display Design

Industrial - presents visual information to communicate information about objects Includes Engineering Design, Product Design, Furniture, Fashion Design

Drawing Drawing - it is the skill that is the foundation of this study and the way that we begin to communicate and generate ideas. This study looks at three types of drawing.

• Observational drawings o Means drawing what you actually see o Used to represent form, texture and materials of an object o Can be used to show multiple views o Can assist in showing the function, proportion and scale of an object in relation to other objects and/or environment o Can be quick freehand drawings or longer studies •

Visualization drawings o Means recording ideas and imaginative concepts from your head o A way to assist in generating ideas – you can build upon each concept drawn o Is usually in the form of quick freehand sketches o Drawings can be two dimensional (2D) or three dimensional (3D) and may include the use of drawing systems to assist in explaining an idea o May include explanatory diagrams

Presentation drawings o Means freehand drawings, design concepts and/or solutions o Is ready for submission to a client or your teacher o Means that drawings and concepts have been fully refined and resolved o May include manual or digital media methods

You are to complete a set of observational drawings for holiday homework.

Some suggestions, a still life, shoes, bag, furniture, a plant, flowers, trees or vase with flowers, Stationery equipment, anything that you can visually see and touch……..
