Crowns & Gowns An Exhibition* A fabulous collection of costumes, jewels, props and behind the scenes images from some of the major Hollywood movies filmed at Ely Cathedral. This fascinating exhibition in the Lady Chapel will showcase some of the most iconic gowns and outfits from Elizabeth: The Golden Age, The Other Boleyn Girl, The King’s Speech, Macbeth and The Crown. These productions bought global award winning actors to the Cathedral including Cate Blanchett, Scarlett Johansson, Natalie Portman, Michael Fassbender, Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush. Friday 20 March - Thursday 16 April Bert, His Dog, Our God An Artist’s Impression of The New Testament In the Lady Chapel Paintings by Gary Bunt regularly feature a man (Bert) and his dog (the commentator). This exhibition sees Bert and his dog telling the story of the life of Christ – from The Nativity to The Ascension. The 51 paintings each has a relevant poem and together they create a personal and imaginative view of The New Testament. Entry included in Cathedral admission.

Heaven & Earth The World In Our Hands 16 May - 15 June

Luke Jerram’s spectacular installation ‘Gaia’, a 7 meter replica of planet Earth, will be on display at Ely Cathedral. Suspended from high above, this globally acclaimed work of art will be the focal point of a special exhibition to highlight and address some of the very real issues affecting our world.

We all have a duty and responsibility to safeguard our planet and acknowledge the impact of climate change. We hope that Heaven & Earth - The whole world in our hands will raise awareness, educate and inspire us all to protect our world. This event will feature exhibits with a focus on climate change plus talks on environmental issues. Gaia is kindly sponsored by The Friends of Ely Cathedral. Visiting Ely Cathedral

Tower Tours Experience over 800 years of history as you go behind the scenes at Ely Cathedral and explore the world famous Octagon and West Towers. Octagon Tower Tour

Marvel at the Octagon tower and lantern. Acknowledged as one of the wonders of medieval engineering, this incredible structure, suspended high over the centre of the Cathedral, was completed in 1342 and is considered the jewel in the Cathedral crown. The fascinating tour over 170 steps takes you behind the scenes of the lantern and opens up the angel doors so you can peer down into the Cathedral. The brave can then go up onto the roof of the tower (Time and weather permitting).

West Tower Tour

Dating from the 13th and 14th centuries, the west tower dominates the Fenland landscape and is well worth the 288 step climb, rewarding you with stunning views over the beautiful, historic city and the surrounding fens. The tower features in well-known literary publications including Tom’s Midnight Garden.

If you live in the CB6 or CB7 postal area, or are a member of the electoral roll of a church within the Diocese of Ely, or a student in higher education in Cambridgeshire, you are entitled to a special pass giving you free access to the ground floor of the Cathedral.
