MRS WIG tells it how it is

Hello, My name’s Mrs Wig and I am a Tanorexic. Well, almost... No I didn’t just misspell a word. Nor am I crazy. It may not yet be a medical term but that doesn’t make a tanning addiction any less real. I don’t smoke, I eat well and I excersize but when it comes to tanning I just can’t seem to put my health first. It started out when I was 13. My mum bought me a subscription to a popular teen magazine and it came with a free fake tanning set. For ages I couldn’t work out what to do with the stuff, but now? Now I could list the different forms of instant tan, the pro’s and con’s of mousse’s and sprays, heck, I could probably list you half the ingredients in a bottle of St. Tropez. I don’t remember the first day I finally got the hang of it but it was a beautiful day spent with orange palms no doubt and I’ve never looked back. See, I’ve never been brown. Don’t get me wrong, I’m no Casper but sitting in English sun for hours on end I’m lucky if I even start to resemble the colour of a milky coffee. But slathered in my brown paste lifts my mood. I genuinely feel depressed if I don’t have some form of colour which is how I know it’s an addiction. I like blame Coco Chanel. If it wasn’t for her it’s highly likely we’d still be sporting a rosy glow. Did you know in the Victorian era pale skin was all the rage as it connoted wealthiness. It was peasants who had to work outside with their skin exposed to the sun who caught colour. But Coco had to step of that French boat looking like a bronzed goddess and well, that’s where it all began.

However, I don’t just follow it because it may be fashionable. When I’m tanned I can wear more colours, I look slimmer, my teeth look whiter and I don’t feel the need to wear as much makeup. These can only be good things right? No. People now tell me I look ill when I’m pale. It’s not exactly a compliment is it? And this is where the addiction starts. Fake tan is fine you think? It doesn’t cause any damage. Well the answer is no. The ingredients in self tanner are extremely harsh on the skin and if you don’t moisturize properly they will dry it out.

I could probably list you half the ingridients in a bottle of st tropez I know only too well that self tanning is an expensive habit and with tanning studios offering beds for little as 50p a minute it’s no surprise our nation is constantly seeing a rise in skin cancer brought on by harmful UV rays. Tanning beds are now considered to be in the highest cancer risk category by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). The truth is any form of a real tan is already a sign of skin damage. The increase in skin pigment, called melanin which is what causes the tan colour change in your skin is a sign of damage. This only goes to show that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and whilst I understand that my personality should be accounted for more than my appearance there’s no denying my confidence with a tan and that is why I’m a fully fledged Tanorexic. ¶

own facemask There are endless amounts of face masks on the high street promising to moisturise, brighten and smooth the skin. But here’s a quick way to make your own luscious honey face mask, with just as good results! It’s almost good enough to eat…

Mix two tablespoons of warm honey with two tablespoons of finely ground almonds in a bowl. Squeeze in half a teaspoon of lemon juice and mix together well.. Rinse off with luke warm water, then splash with cold water to close the pores. There you have it. Beautiful cleansed skin in an instant! Rub a good amount gently onto the face. Choose fragrance oils rather than most essential oils as these are cheaper. Orange, other citrus and some herb essential oils are better value and smell amazing! Create your blend by mixing a few drops of oil on a piece of cotton wool until you are happy with the mix. It’s a case of trial and error, It’s good to have a mix woody, green/fresh and fruity or oriental. A good blend of different notes gives a perfume structure and depth, which makes it last longer. Once you’ve created your blend, dilute with perfumer’s alcohol. For an eau de toilette blend, go for 10% perfume oils and 90% alcohol. For a stronger parfum blend, go for a 20/80 ratio. So, for a 50ml bottle of the suggested eau de toilette blend above, you need 5mls of perfume oil blend and 45mls of alcohol. You now have your cheap and individual perfume... Spritz away!

Prepare your feet by deriding the dead skin. Warm your tap water to medium-high heat and fill a basin halfway with the water. Pour epsom salts or fizzing bath crystals into the water and mix vigorously to dissolve. Soak your feet for a good 15 minutes. Grasp a pumice stone and rub back and forth in one direction across your entire foot to smooth the skin. Dry your feet and use a cuticle tool to gently push back the cuticles and the skin around your nail bed. Rub your nails with cuticle oil or any essential oil and dry with a paper towel. Trim nails with nail clippers and then file until smooth. Brush on a base coat, two coats of nail colour and a top coat, allowing sufficient time in between coats for drying. Lather lotion or essential oil over your feet and your lower legs and massage vigorously to improve circulation and even out your skin tone.

What's in my makeup bag?.

Like most girls, I love makeup! I have so many different products and love to experiment with my looks. I have my staple items that I swear by, like my MAC foundation and good old black pencil eyeliner. Then I have my products that add a bit of glamour to the mix, like coloured eye shadows, lengthening mascara and tinted lip glosses. Recently, I have had a clear out and got back to basics with my makeup bag. Now I have everything I need in one place, with products that I use regularly and wouldn’t be without it! Every girl likes to know what products her friends or celebs are using to keep them looking beautiful, so here’s a sneak peek into my world…

Words by Sherelle Lancaster

FUL

UTI BEA

BEGININGS

Ever since discovering MAC Studio Fix, I’ve rarely used any other foundation. It has great coverage, oil control, SPF15 and lasts up to 24 hours. For £19.50 there’s enough to last about two /three months which is great news for me! I apply this with my synthetic makeup brush that I snapped up for just £5.99 in Superdrug. It’s soft on the skin but with enough density to apply the foundation evenly. Every brush stroke feels ever so relaxing!

twenty eight

EYE LURE

When it comes to eye shadows, my friends know how much I love to experiment with colours. In total, my collection is probably larger than most peoples shoe collections (shocking I know) and I generally wear different colours each day. From smoky eyes, to two tone effects, this is the part of my makeup routine I enjoy the most. These eye shadows were a present, with 20 small pots of cream and powder eyeshades in the set.

features COMPACT SIMPLICITY Victoria Jackson is a relatively new brand to me, but I couldn’t resist a deal they did with their makeup range. For £30 I received an amazing collection of makeup products and this compact eye shadow and lip gloss set was one of them. It’s my little saving grace on those nights out or long days. With a small brush inside, six dark and light colour palettes of eye shadows, and four juicy lip colours, it’s the perfect all in one makeup essential

BACK

TO

BLACK

My two staples. Black eyeliner and mascara. This doubled ended liquid and pencil liner I received free so is a new one I’m trying at the moment, but it certainly does the job and one application lasts all day. No smudges and no panda eyes. My Victoria Jackson mascara was part of the makeup set, and gives length and definition in a few subtle sweeps.

PEACHY POUT! You’ll always find Vaseline on my person, and it’s definitely one of my basic must haves. This rose and almond oil infused one is the best in my opinion, and gives lips a rosy shine. For just under £2 this always lasts me a couple of months, and certainly doesn’t break the bank. For days when I don’t want a strong lip

SOFTLY SOFTLY I find that applying my eye shadows with my fingers becomes a tad messy, so these double ended foam applicators are the best bet and last a good while. I get mine from Boots for £1.50 and there are loads in the pack too. Bargain!

SHINE

ON

EZE

TWE Third in my Victoria Jackson collection, is this double ended lip colour and clear gloss. It’s slightly sparkly, and in a rich berry tone. I love wearing this on nights out because it’s so easy to apply and lasts for hours!

ME

My Avon tweezers have lasted me an age, and were no more than £3! They give great precision and save the hassle of plucking for endless amounts of minutes with barely any noticeable result. Perfect for when my eyebrows need a touch up if I can’t thread them.

It is said to be one of the most unbelievably relaxing treatments there is - yet for most of us, they tickle more than pleasure. However, as Venus discovers, the right one really can have you dribbling with sensation. Words by Tamique Thomas

slice of chocolate cake drowning in vanilla ice cream”

I

feel somewhat of a fraud for confessing this, but I’ve never liked having a foot massage. It’s not something that I would randomly request in an intimate situation. My inherent dislike to foot massages comes down to the very real fear of whacking my feet out and dangling them in the hands of a strange person who enjoys twiddling with my toes, scrubbing the dead skin from my heels and caressing the soles of my feet (who has time for this?). This might sound silly of me, but it has happened, Several times in fact. And so inevitably, I would prefer to indulge in a huge slice of chocolate cake drowning in vanilla ice cream while I hang loose and re-charge my batteries. Well that was until I had the mind-blower of all massages to change all that. For all the disbelievers out there it really does exist. This life-changing event was down to the Foot Reflexology ritual at Q Hotels via the hands of Gemma at the Ashford International Spa, Kent. Foot Reflexology is based on the premise that our nerves or reflex points go from the bottom of our feet to the top of our head, encompassing all the vital organs on the way. The treatment at Q Hotels combines deep conditioning creams and exhilarating products to soften the skin and leave your feet feeling lighter than a feather. At first, I sat in disappointment as Gemma gently stroked my feet in a familiar way that made me

thirty two

I would prefer to indulge in a huge

want to scream and kick her in the face rather than collapsing in an air of comfort. I instructed her to move towards the ball of my feet, and that is where it all began. Gentle strokes made in a circular motion left my mind in a complete haze as I started to doze off I specifically remember smiling at the fact that she was finally getting it right. From that moment on, my thoughts weren’t fully constructed (I never once planned what I’d choose from the dinner menu that evening, or made a note of what outfit I would put together). They were more like little bubbles exploding in my head- and this is going to sound totally mental, but at certain parts I felt like I was sitting on a vibrating chair that gave me pins and needles every time I wriggled my feet. A widely accepted view is that reflexology encourages the relaxation response to take over from the stress response. This in turn encourages the body and mind to become more balanced. The general responses to relaxation treatments such as reflexology can include a lowered pulse and blood pressure, more balanced hormones, even breathing, improved circulation and a calmer digestive system. The light-weight feeling after a 60minutes reflexology treatment will leave you substantially balanced; both emotionally and physically meaning tension is reduced.

Photograph courtesy of sxc.hu

Gemma’s sensual touch was designed to address all the ligaments and bones in my feet (clearly as they now felt heavenly). She definitely tapped into my energy fields and redressed their balance. Any form of stress or anxiety I felt that day had disappeared quicker than I can remember. Is this what I had been missing out on all this time? Were my girlfriends right in saying I was missing out on heavenly pleasure? If this is what they were all rewarded with on their visit to the spa last week then I had most definitely missed out on an amazing experience. ¶

At Q Hotels (www.qhotels.co.uk) a ritual reflexology massage is combined with light strokes and pivoting techniques to unlock tension while stimulating blood vessels and loosening joints- for the most encompassing treatment imaginable.

t and keep cut out and keep cut out and keep cut out and keep cut out and keep cut out and keep cut out and keep cut out and keep cut out and keep cut out and keep cut out and

The 25mins was over quicker than I had anticipated, I immediately recognised the lightness and unburdened feeling of my feet. They were so smooth and a scent of lavender infiltrated my nostrils. Gemma told me she had found several knots in my foot joints (sounds about right, my feet are the soldiers of my life- always walking and coping with the daily presuure of 6-inch high heels.

features Reflexology is a simple, effective and natural therapy which focuses on the feet. It has been around for almost 5,000 years now with origins in China and Egypt, where pressure therapies were recognised to have therapeutic benefits. The wonderful art of foot reflex therapy was not introduced to the Western world until the 20th century when the Americans began to develop zone therapy, which had been practised by the Europeans as far back as the 14th century, into Reflexology as we know it today.

Benefits of Reflexology ⋅ Stiff joints ⋅ Repetitive strain injuries ⋅ Stress ⋅ Anxiety ⋅ Mood swings ⋅ Fluid retention ⋅ Fatigue ⋅ Arthritis

Who is it for? Reflexology is suitable for people of all ages, including children, elderly and women during pregnancy. It has been proven that the relaxing effects of the treatment help those with stress related health problems. It is very rare for a patient to be refused treatment and would only be in extreme cases such as acute infection or serious leg or foot problems or injuries. Other conditions such as diabetes or epilepsy and early stages of pregnancy require extra care when being treated.

Day to night A perfect guide to achieving pretty day time makeup with minimal effort, followed by a fool proof sexy evening look to get those heads turning. Follow our lead…

pretty powerful Prep!

T

he first step is always to prep the skin by moisturising. A light, vitamin enriched face cream is always best for smooth makeup application. Try Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Base (£36) to make your skin glow. To brighten any dark circles under the eye, a creamy concealer is always good to choose a lighter shade than your foundation for a seamless finish Max Factor’s Master Touch Concealer Pen (£7.99) allows for precision. Then you want to apply a foundation with a brush that will give a decent coverage to last all day.Bobbi Brown has a great Natural Finish SPF15 Foundation (£29) that will give the perfect even base and natural look. A powder is optional, but will set your foundation and give a clean, matte finish. Apply to those shine prone areas, like the nose and forehead. Try L’Oreal Ideal True Match Powder (£8), sweeping lightly over the face and your prep is finished! If you want a justpinched rosy look, blend in Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge in Rose (£18) to the apple of your cheek instead.

fifty

EYES Now for some colour! A subtle, natural tone is good for the day time. For fair skin, a pink or nude shade applied to the eyelid will open up the eye. Try Accessorise Eye Shadow Icon in Champagne. For darker skin tones, a bronze or earthy shade is flattering, and will bring out brown or green eyes. Try Accessorise Eye Shadow Icon in Truffle (both £4) and apply with a small eye shadow brush. A pencil liner is optional, but can really define your eyes. Apply to the lower waterline for added drama. This look is all about simplicity and enhancing natural beauty, so simply curl your lashes with an eyelash curler, or apply some clear mascara for impact. MUA Clear Mascara (£1) is a bargain buy and does the trick! Cue stage three...

LIPS!

Save those daring rose petal red lips for that dreamy date of yours. Today, we keep things simple with a stroke of candy coloured lip gloss. Try 2True Plumptuous Lipgloss in Crystalline Baby Pink (£1.99). Pretty Powerful complete!

trends daring damsel Prep!

You can use the same method as the day time to prep the skin. For a fuller coverage, try MAC Studio Fix SPF 15 Foundation (£19.50). This gives amazing coverage, comes in huge range of tones and gives a flawless finish. A bronzing powder can be used instead of face powder to give the cheeks a warm, healthy glow, so try Collection 2000 Bronzing Pearls (£4.19) dusted over the cheek bones.

Try 2True Effortless Waterproof Eyeliner (£1.9), applying thick enough to frame the eye. Now you need some eye lash drama! Max Factor’s new 24 False Lash Effect Mascara (£11.99) will add extreme volume and colour for super sexy lashes. Alternatively, for all out glamour try Eyelure Girls Aloud False Lashes by Nicola (£5.19) they are one of the best out there. It’s almost time for your grand entrance…

EYES

LIPS!

There is so much you can do to make your eyes dazzle, from using bold colours to metallic eye dust. For that all-star classic Hollywood look, dark eyes and bold lips are essential, so fill the eye lid with a smoky metallic eye shadow. Bourjois Smokey Eyes in Gris Dandy (£5.99) is good as there are three hues: dark grey, silver and black so you can blend to create your own two or three tone effect. Also comes with a double tipped applicator for even better precision. Add a black pencil liner to the lower eye line and a liquid liner to the upper lash line for definition.

So you already look beautiful, but now it’s time to inject that perky pout with some exciting colour. To complete your Marylyn Monroe transformation, those smoky eyes and flawless, clear skin call for red lips, so try the limited edition L’Oreal Colour Riche 297 Red Passion by Cheryl Cole (£8.19). It’s full of omega 3 oils and vitamin E for long lasting moisture and a kissable pout. Viola! Daring Damsel is ready for the city streets. ¶

diary There comes a time when everyone decides to detox to beat that slugish feeling and get a spring back in your step. It’s not always the most exciting challenge, but it’s not as daunting as you think... WHY IT’S GOOD: Detoxing is one of the best ways to increase energy, improve circulation, the appearance of skin and boost overall health and wellbeing. There is no better way to uplift your mood and eliminate toxic elements after a period of too much alcohol or indulgence than with a healthy detox plan. This 3 day detox plan is so easy to follow, you might want to share the good news.

FISH OILS Fish oils are an essential source of Omega-3 fatty acids- found in oily fish such as Mackerel, Salmon, Herring and Trout. Supplements such as Cod Liver oil are an ideal way of increasing your intake of these essentials without having to eat ridiculously large amounts of fish.

TOP TIPS: A detox can be done for anything from a few days to a few weeks. Dependig on how long you thiink you can last and what your personal goals are. For a beginner, 3-5 days is a great start and will still leave you feeling refreshed

FOODS TO INCLUDE:

Fruit and fruit juices, vegetables incl. beans and lentils, tofu and Quorn, brown rice and rice noodles, potatoes, oats, oat cakes and rice cakes, fresh fish, unsalted nuts and seeds, natural yoghurt, herbs and spices, herbal or fruit teas.

FOODS TO AVOID: Dairy, red meat incl. meat products such as sausages, burgers and pate, fizzy drinks and squash, processed foods, ready meals, ready-made sauces and take-away, wheat, alcohol, coffee, tea, excessive use of salt.

ACAI BERRY In its natural form the Acai berry contains a whole host of nutritional components that make it appealing. These include: Omega 3, 6 and 9- According to the NHS, our body needs these ‘good’ fats to help us to stay healthy.

fifty two

1. Take a multivitamin - Many detox plans eliminate red meat, so you’ll need an extra boost of iron and zinc. It will also improve energy levels in the early stages of the detox. 2. Include a ‘superfood’ - Superfoods are the bad boys of a detox, often high in antioxidents and great sources of nutrients and natural fibres.. Anything like blueberries, broccoli, garlic, spinach, oats, goji berries, and salmon are all great. Green superfoods like wheat grass, barley grass and spirulina are highly concentraed and protect the body against illness. 3. Hot water & lemon - This cleanses the system and get the bowels moving. Drink this every morning.

THE CREAM Nivea Good-Bye Cellulite 10 Day Serum is Niveas latest advanced cellulite busting treatment, full of lotus extract and skins own L-Carnitine. The concentrated formula visibly smoothes and firms target areas after just 10 days.

THE MASSAGE Toxins are very harmful for the body, so treatments that remove toxins are great for restoring the bodys natural harmony. The Lymphatic drainage massage uses a gentle pumping technique to stimulate lymphatic circulation to reduce water retention and remove toxins. Usually performed on the face, neck or body.

THE TOOL Dry skin brushing is one of the best ways to improve circulation. It removes toxins, and stimulates and encourages nerve beds within the skins structure that in turn increases normal healing processes throughout the body. You should always brush

Feel like every day is Summer by trying this effective yet easy design.

step one

YOU WILL NEED: A base/top coat A yellow nail polish A brown nail art pen or a brown polish and cocktail stick A green nail art pen or a green polish and cocktail stick Step one – Start by painting your nails with either a base coat or nude. We chose ‘Couture’ by Ciaté. This is an important step as it protects your nails from discolouration. Alternatively you can use a white to bring the colour out.

step tw

o

Step two – Once this has dried, paint all your nails with a sunshine yellow. We chose ‘Lite’ by Sally Hansen. Yellow colours often appear sparse on the nails so use two coats if necessary. Step three – Once this has dried draw a number of lines using your brown polish to create the stems of the trees. Depending on how many palm trees you want or the size of your nails you can paint one or two. Step four – Once this has dried use your green poish to paint curved lines flicking out from the brown stems. This appears as if they are leaves.

Channel your inner Dorothy by venturing out with this cute yet glamorous nail design. YOU WILL NEED: A base/top coat A red nail polish A yellow nail polish A brown nail art pen or a brown polish and cocktail stick Red diamantes Step one – Start by painting your nails with either a base coat or nude. We chose ‘Couture’ by Ciaté. This is an important step as it protects your nails from discolouration. Alternatively you can use a white to bring the colour out. Step two – Once this has dried, apart from the thumb paint all your nails with a rich red. We chose ‘Victoria and Albert’ by Nails Inc. Step three – Whilst this is drying carefully paint your thumb nail with the yellow. We chose ‘Lite’ by Sally Hansen. To make sure the yellow is really vivid consider painting a couple of coats. Step four – Once the red has dried you can add the diamantes to your third finger. Most sets come with a sticky back so you can pick them straight up with a pair of tweezers or nail cutters and re-arrange them until the majority of your nail’s surface is covered. Step five – Once your thumb nail has dried you can begin painting horizontal stripes with the brown nail art pen. When you have finished, begin painting vertical lines in between so the design begins to look like bricks.
