“Cloud adoption in Europe appears to be gaining momentum – Modularity in data centre infrastructure is the answer.” Vincent Liebe, Marketing Manager Minkels As a leading global provider of comprehensive data centre infrastructure solutions, Minkels has identified a strong market shift in Europe from purchasing pure-play colocation services to a more hybrid approach that includes the implementation of cloud-based services. Modularity is the answer to keep up with the new dynamics this will bring to data centre environments.

Following a U.S. trend, IT is gradually becoming a commodity in Europe, with cloud service infrastructure such as IaaS, SaaS and PaaS gaining momentum amidst IT investments in general. As a worldwide vendor of data centre solutions, Minkels has recognised that cloud solutions are significantly gaining ground against pureplay colocation solutions and traditional IT infrastructure solutions. Current growth in the adoption of cloud will enforce flexibility requirements, in order to keep pace with cloud characteristics such as location independence and scalability (up and down). Modularity is a prerequisite for your flexible thus cloud-ready data centre infrastructure. That’s why Minkels has incorporated modular principles (and energy-efficiency) in all data centre products within its comprehensive portfolio – from housing to cooling, and from power infrastructure to cable management and monitoring. To facilitate cloud infrastructure development and the dynamics that go with it, Minkels has added modular principles to the smallest details in racks, power distribution including busbars, cooling, fibre management, monitoring and aisle containment solutions, to name a few. The extremely modular Next Generation Cold Corridor®, and also the Free Standing Cold Corridor® with its pay-as-you-grow options, are the most recent additions to Minkels’ modular data centre solutions portfolio. This modular data centre approach will help end-users and cloud service providers alike build flexible and future-ready data centre environments.

Celebrating 10 Years of IP EXPO Europe

A

s they celebrate the 10 year anniversary of IP EXPO Europe, we’re taking a look at a few of the influential keynote speakers from their previous lineup.

2011

STEVE WOZNIAK, co-founder of Apple and Chief Scientist of Fusion-io – gave the keynote, titled “Today’s Science Fiction, Tomorrow’s Science Fact,” to a standing room only crowd, with his co-founder at Fusion-io, Rick White. It covered how to stay focused on the creative elements of innovation to avoid getting bogged down in “the way things have always been done”.

2012

MIKE LYNCH, sold Autonomy to HP for £6.6 billion in 2011 – warned of limitations to the take-up of Cloud, and big changes coming from the Internet of Things, in a wide-ranging keynote, which also commented on big firms like Google, Apple, Samsung and EU regulators not “playing nicely” anymore.

2013

KEVIN MITNICK, the world’s most famous cyber hacker – Mitnick, who now heads up Mitnick Security Consulting, delivered a harsh critique on the ability of anti-virus software providers to protect companies against socially engineered forms of malware attacks, saying his favourite tool for selecting targets was LinkedIn.

2014

SIR TIM BERNERS-LEE, founder of the World Wide Web – the ‘father of the internet’ made skeptical observations at the seemingly widespread willingness to relinquish the concept of privacy, saying “We have to build systems which allow privacy.” He called for people to claim ownership of their data.

IoT: The Next Wave of Cloud Platform Innovation

T

he rise in global trade means that centuries-old ports, like Italy’s Genoa or Germany’s Hamburg, are struggling to cope, dealing with thousands of truck movements and millions of containers daily, clogging the roads and tying up customs points due to very complex scheduling problems and inadequately shared information. Today, however, most containers have on-board devices meaning they and their content can be tracked on their journeys to and through the port. Lorries can be told to stay away until they’re needed, reducing traffic. Customs clearance can be moved to another location, vastly increasing capacity and throughput. This is an example of the Internet of Things: the emergence of a hyper-connected fabric of intelligent devices constantly interacting with each other—and us. Another, quite different example is how Apple is collecting (anonymised) health data on millions of people through its Healthkit application. This data is being collected by Apple’s partner IBM, which in turn is providing the data together with its revolutionary cognitive computing tool, Watson, to health researchers around the world to use this unprecedented new information source to advance our medical knowledge to fight disease. The IoT is going to revolutionise how we

interact with the world, just as the (old) Internet revolutionised our interactions with computers, and each other. IDC, which calls the IoT an Innovation Accelerator because of its huge potential, believes that there will be billions of intelligent ‘things’ joining the IoT over the next five years, generating trillions of dollars in revenue for the businesses involved. One could argue over the numbers; for example, is a connected car, with its dozens of sensors, one ‘thing’ or many? But what is unarguable is the direction of advance: IDC has identified literally hundreds of use cases, in 16 industries, and more are emerging all the time. We are seeing Smart Cities, Smart Healthcare, Smart Industries (sometimes referred to as Industry 4.0) and many more. The IoT truly is the next cloud platform for IT innovation. RAMI HOUBBY, NFON UK

No two Clouds are the same! Rami Houbby shares his insight on Cloud telephone systems and their value in today’s business communications strategies

W

e all know hosted telephony, of a kind, has been around forever. BT Centrex in the 1980’s was hosted telephony. Mobile phone services, you could argue, are hosted telephony. And ‘hosted telephony’ services enabled by IP telephony kit vendors are, of course, hosted telephony. There are contentions and parallels between all of those kinds of hosted telephony. Firstly, they’re all as cumbersome as each other, in terms of service flexibility and complexity. Secondly, their pricing can be pretty steep and hard to decipher for the buyer – try adding in the bonus features you’ll need and you’ll get the point. Thirdly, they tie users in to long term contracts and commitments. Finally, they’re usually closed and proprietary systems, making it expensive and complex to integrate with the wider world of personal communications of the sort that smartphone users take for granted. It appears on the surface that the only difference between the traditional PBX solution and hosted telephony is the location of the hardware! In short, until pretty recently, these traditionally accepted hosted services made it easy for PBX vendors to compete, and that’s reflected in the early market stats. However, in the context of the modern communications environment, both PBX solutions and old-style hosted telephony

systems are competing not just with each other, but with a new breed of Cloud telephony. Real Cloud telephony services are disrupting similar, if not the same, offerings. The main difference is in the business models and personas of the services. For example flat end user pricing, which delivers the simple and the sophisticated features, plus desktop and mobile options within a single, affordable license. Not only that, the multi-tenancy nature of Cloud telephony facilitates a scalable future-proof service with a raft of integration capabilities. All services and updates are immediately accessible at the point of activation across all customer bases. And the end of the extended contract can also be seen! For example, NFON’s customers benefit from being able to renew their licenses on a month-by-month basis, scaling up and down effortlessly. Could you refer to Cloud telephony as just another app on the network? Yes, on reflection you could say just that because to the end user that’s exactly how it feels. However, if you are selling a PBX solution, then you can sell Cloud telephony stand-alone (i.e. without having to also sell other Cloud or hosting solutions). It just becomes your IPT or UC app, enhancing your portfolio of telephony services. And if you are a data solution reseller, then you can sell it stand-alone as your telephony solution which nests very nicely with your other Cloud and hosted services.

VISIT STAND FF16 for a live demo of NFON Cloud Telephone System features and functions. And, to learn the truth about your Skype for Business integration with Cloud telephony, register for the NFON seminar in the Unified Communications and Collaboration Theatre at 14:20 on Wed 7 Oct 2015 – Speaker: Rami Houbby, Managing Director

It’s also worth pointing out that while Cloud telephony does pretty well stand-alone, as we mentioned, it’s also brilliant at integrating. For instance, NFON’s system integrates effortlessly with Skype for Business (formally Microsoft Lync). This means that the business users’ favourite communication client uses NFON’s Cloud telephone system for calls with the outside world, using full PBX functions and features, and the Skype for Business Cloud to reach other Skype users. And is there enough choice of base platform? Maybe that’s a question better suited to the traditional hosted vendor. The beauty of Cloud telephony is that you don’t need to invest in any kind of platform. Ongoing costs are significantly reduced too—no outlay on expensive hardware, very competitive calling costs, and the ability to grow with your business are just some of the main reasons why Cloud VISIT NFON AT STAND FF16 NFON The next-generation telephone system. www.nfon.com

telephony is taking the march over traditional PBX. The UK is experiencing huge market demand for Cloud telephony and with NFON you can be assured of a world class service. NFON is one of Europe’s leading Cloud telephony providers and always puts its customer first. Our standards-based technology was developed with customer service in mind. We have over 150 built-in functions as well as a wide range of value added service, and we offer “real-time” live technical support, all for a great price. Now’s the time to make the switch to the Cloud, and the NFON Cloud Telephone System makes it painless to do so. For more information call 0203 740 6740, or email uk-info@nfon.com

CHRIS TUCKER, MBX SYSTEMS

New Cloud Appliance Option for SaaS ISVs: Pay by the Month

T

raditionally, Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) delivering their applications under a Software-as-aService (SaaS) model have had no practical way to offer an on-premise hardware deployment option. This has prevented sales to organisations with regulatory mandates or performance issues that bar adoption of cloudbased software, leaving significant segments of the market untapped. A new cloud appliance subscription program being introduced by some hardware builders promises to plug those gaps by allowing SaaS providers to offer their applications pre-loaded onto purpose-built hardware appliances that are billed under their usual monthly subscription model. Appliances can be deployed in a private or hybrid cloud scenario with no software installation or configuration, preserving key SaaS benefits. Both hardware and software can be billed on one consolidated invoice. Upfront purchase costs, inventory commitments, obsolescence risks and hardware program overhead are completely eliminated. Pioneering this new model is leading server appliance manufacturer MBX Systems, which has manufacturing facilities in both the US and EU. Under its new MBX Clear subscription program, MBX owns and supports the

equipment, ships it to end users on demand, issues a single monthly bill to the ISV for all customer systems in the field, and reclaims units when subscriptions expire or systems are upgraded. Non-SaaS providers can also benefit. For those selling under a traditional license arrangement, MBX Clear makes it possible to offer end customers a monthly hardware payment alternative rather than requiring them to pay for systems out of their capital budget. For startups and rapidly growing companies, it provides scalability by allowing appliances to be built to forecast without incurring large upfront purchase expenses. RICHARD SYKES, CLOUD INDUSTRY FORUM

Migrating to the Cloud - Is 2015 the Tipping Point?

I

t is a decade since the key elements of what we now call the Cloud started to impact on how we exploit contemporary ICT. The ground breakers then were outsiders – Amazon in e-commerce, Google in Search, Salesforce with early CRM (Customer Relationship Management) services – each ‘breaking the mould’ by developing and exploiting virtualised and highly automated data centre operations. Lead by Amazon with its Amazon Web Services, a market in computing power available as a service rapidly developed – and then emerged a diversity of softwarebased services available on demand, paid for as used—new commercial models. The industry old guard were caught off guard! Each year since 2010 the Cloud Industry Forum (CIF) has published a detailed statistical review of how the use of services sourced from the Cloud is developing. In 2015 the picture is clear – widespread and accelerating uptake but chiefly on a relatively narrow front – enterprises moving one or two key operational aspects of their business onto Cloud-sourced services – thus websites onto Cloud compute platforms, or routine back office requirements onto Cloudsourced ERP, CRM, HR services. The CIF surveys are backward looking. I serve as a judge for CIF’s UK Cloud Awards and Eurocloud’s Europe Cloud Awards. Both exercises give me a forward looking insight into

the staggering new diversity of innovation in Cloud-based services, business models, now being exploited. Combining these insights with those I have gained as a monthly blogger with a popular industry publication since 2008, I see an emerging pattern in the way that we are now moving to source and exploit our contemporary ICT. Long-established business models are being cracked open (think retailing, publishing) – and this is becoming a reality for an ever-widening spread of businesses. But the new Cloud-based architecture of services now provides the means to rapidly re-invent and re-launch a business if that is your best way forward – a wide range of building blocks and tools available with which to rapidly create and express new business models (this is, after all, how the fast growing start-up drives itself!):

“IN 2015 THE PICTURE IS CLEAR – WIDESPREAD AND ACCELERATING UPTAKE BUT CHIEFLY ON A RELATIVELY NARROW FRONT”

13

“I SEE AN EMERGING PATTERN IN THE WAY THAT WE ARE NOW MOVING TO SOURCE AND EXPLOIT OUR CONTEMPORARY ICT”

• Integrated data storage/computing/ networking platforms to provide the strong foundations; • The ever growing universe of specialised Cloud-sourced services and Cloud-serviced apps with which to build & elaborate the business’ operations; • New ‘devops’ capabilities with which to rapidly create those specialised services and apps that align closely to delivering key business objectives; • And new capabilities with which to rework, transform and migrate the older legacy digital ‘fabric’ where required & justified.

The Cloud Industry Forum (CIF) has developed a Cloud Adoption Road Map of the 21 key elements that scope the enterprise’s journey as it migrates into the Cloud. Grouped in 5 broad categories, the CIF Knowledge Hub provides access to a well-categorised library of relevant white papers and related reading. First do your homework, then visit IP Expo 2015 – and then get to work! Richard Sykes is also a guest writer for CIO Magazine. For further reading around enterprise cloud, please go to his blog page on the CIO UK website.

We are at the tipping point! The serious visitor to IP EXPO Europe 2015 this October at ExCel London will be able to explore the means to effectively tackle the transformational challenges that their business faces today.
