Campaigns for Change The Advocacy team spearheads campaigns to raise awareness and promote change on relevant issues, such as the “Fix Auckland” campaign to reform local government in the Auckland region – resulting in The Royal Commission of Inquiry into Auckland governance. Previously our “Rev Up” campaign also resulted in gained increased transport funding for the Auckland region.

Advocacy coordinates the Policy Forum: a meeting for members of the Employers Forum and Manufacturers Forum combined to debate and develop all the vital issues affecting business and employers each month.
We regularly survey members on many different topics from their environment performance to innovation and R&D. We want to be sure the views we present to government reflect those of our membership.

Linking Schools with Employers Our Advocacy division works with schools and the wider education system to help students develop their appreciation of business and of the careers open to them. Our Pathways to Employment Expo for senior secondary school students and other initiatives link up potential employers with future prospective employees.

Wage and Salary Information National Employers Wage & Salary Survey New Zealand’s most comprehensive employer-focussed tool for benchmarking and setting pay rates has been in operation since 1994 as a joint venture by the four regional employers organisations, including ourself. The survey analyses remuneration and other key employment conditions of employees across 216 positions at regional and national levels. Survey participation is available all year round, with the data analysed and reports refreshed weekly. Survey reports include: •

Our team of occupational health and safety consultants works across four fronts:
• We assist employers in identifying the right premium group for paying their ACC premiums and act on their behalf when refuting an ACC workplace claim.

Occupational Health & Safety Experience Rating There are two categories for Experience Rating discounts on your ACC Levy: Class One. Discounts / Loadings of 10% for those companies with a levy under $10,000 Class Two. Discounts / Loadings of up to 50% for those companies with a levy greater than $10,000
Workplace Safety Management Practices (WSMP) A WSMP is an ACC audit tool to evaluate an employer’s OH&S systems. The evaluation is conducted by an external auditor every 2 years, and the results can mean:
If you’re in Class One, then you are assessed by the number of weekly compensation days (i.e. staff off work and on ACC, starting after the first week). Zero days off Between 1 and 71 days off

If you’re in Class Two, then ACC will compare the number of weekly compensation days that injuries in your workplace have generated, and all claims with medical costs greater than $500.00 and compare that to other businesses in the same Industry Levy Risk Group (LRG) - These are employers that have similar industries and risk profiles as you. If your performance is better than the LRG industries average then you may get a discount, if your performance is worse then you may get a loading. +/- 15% for industry Compares the relative performance of each industry group within the overall levy group +/- 35% experience rating Compares your experience (claims over $500, death, number of claims etc) with other employers in the same group

Manufacturing The manufacturing sector makes up nearly 50 percent of New Zealand’s exports and is steadily moving away from unprocessed primary commodities towards more innovative and specialised goods that earn higher export revenues. Manufacturers comprise a significant part of EMA membership. Manufacturing forums and policy, research and advocacy are a key part of our representation of the manufacturing sector.
Specific projects and work-streams include: • The Performance of Manufacturing Index - the BNZ-BusinessNZ PMI – is a monthly survey which provides the most accurate and timely data about manufacturing. It’s aligned with PMI surveys in the US, EU, Asia and Australia, allowing comparisons between manufacturing activity in New Zealand and other economies. • After taking the pulse of the sector we then communicate it to manufacturers, policy makers and the media. The PMI’s sister survey is the BNZ-BusinessNZ Performance of Services Index (PSI) • www.manufacturingnz.org.nz, including: -- a searchable database of R&D happening in New Zealand’s universities and polytechnics, so manufacturers can get help with product development, operational improvement and tap into expert knowledge -- a directory of contract manufacturers to allow businesses to find contract manufacturers who may be able to assist them with particular projects – a free online LEAN manufacturing assessment tool to help improve productivity -- the latest information, training, events and assistance with a complete range of manufacturing issues • Working to improve government procurement so manufacturers have better opportunities to win tenders based on whole of life assessments, including price, quality, servicing, maintenance and building local capability
• Working on policy issues which affect manufacturers, such as the ETS, double taxation for those exporting into Australia, product standards and improving investment in R & D and the provision of skilled training in the trades • Helping the Industry Capability Network (ICN) communicate to manufacturers how they can better win a place in global supply chains • Partnering with NZTE and the ICN to promote local manufacturing capability to large multinationals looking to invest in New Zealand • Assisting NZTE in promoting the results of an international benchmarking survey of how New Zealand managers in manufacturing measure up – good management is a big contributor to productivity. The survey results showed that while New Zealand managers compared favourably internationally on operational management (systems, processes, lean manufacturing, planning etc) they are weaker at people management. In particular New Zealand managers need to focus on having good systems to attract and retain talented staff and to deal with poor performers. Global surveys show that companies with effective talent management systems have a significantly higher percentage of women in leadership positions, which also adds positively to productivity.

The annual subscription payments by members are based on a return of each member’s total current annual salaries and wages (excluding Director’s Fees, Bonuses and Commission and Redundancy payments) or for a new business the projected annual payroll. 2. The salaries and wages of employees of subsidiaries and branches or divisions of any firm are to be included in the return, except where the subsidiary branch or division is a subscribing member. A member shall remain a member until written notice of resignation signed by the member or authorised agent is delivered to the Association and payment for any outstanding subscriptions due is made. 3. Where a variation to the amount agreed between the Initiator and the Customer from time to time to be direct debited has been made without notice being given in terms of clause 1(a) above, request the Bank to reverse or alter any such Direct Debit initiated by the Initiator by debiting the amount of the reversal or alteration of a Direct Debit back to the Initiator through the Initiator’s Bank PROVIDED such request is made not more than 120 days from the date when the Direct Debit was debited to my/our account.

This Authority will remain in full force and effect in respect of all Direct Debits passed to my/our account in good faith notwithstanding my/our death, bankruptcy or other revocation of this Authority until actual notice of such event is received by the Bank. In any event this Authority is subject to any arrangement now or hereafter existing between me/us and the Bank in relation to my/our account. Any dispute as to the correctness or validity of an amount debited to my/our account shall not be the concern of the Bank except in so far as the Direct Debit has not been paid in accordance with this Authority. Any other disputes lies between me/us and the initiator. Where the Bank has used reasonable care and skill in acting in accordance with this authority, the Bank accepts no responsibility or liability in respect of: i. the accuracy of information about Direct Debits on Bank statements. ii. any variations between notices given by the Initiator and the amounts of Direct Debits. The Bank is not responsible for, or under any liability in respect of the Initiators failure to give notice in accordance with 1(a) nor for the non-receipt or late receipt of notice by me/us for any reason whatsoever. In any such situation the dispute lies between me/us and the Initiator.
4. The Bank may: a. b. c. d.
In its absolute discretion conclusively determine the order of priority of payment by it of any monies pursuant to this or any other Authority, cheque or draft properly executed by me/us and given to or drawn on the Bank. At any time terminate this Authority as to future payments by notice in writing to me/us. Charge its current fees for this service in force from time-to-time Upon receipt of an “authority to transfer form” signed by me/us from a bank to which my/our account has been transferred, transfer to that bank this Authority to Accept Direct Debits
