eMAG 19 - Be Creative!

Page 1

Dear Reader, You know this phrase written across the front cover of new eMAG issue. It’s what teachers told us to be in school and everybody hearing it got the chills. ‘Be creative!’ – an expression so vague and variant. However, our team has put out its feelers to gather different ways of being creative and is going to show you that creativity is more than bright colors and a lot of brainIn order to prove this we’ll take you from Florida to China, from Kitzbühl to Cologne, to every imaginable part of Augsburg and back to California. On our trip we experience that experimenting with food is “A matter of taste”, we’ll have a look at the Food and Wine Festival in “Disney World”, visit the sparrow and the bee at their home “Space2b” and get to know “Die Bunten”. We’ll learn that a “Flower on concrete” is more than just a ruined façade or that “Creativity under pressure” can be a blessing and curse at the same time. On our excursion we explore “The lost art of writing letters”, “The story behind the stories” of ‘Die Augsburger Puppenkiste’ 19 helps out with a ‘Dressing up for Dummies’ guide. While some enjoy funky dresses, others

The lost art of writing letters Dear friends, fans and readers,

A couple of days ago, I came across some old letters. I felt a mixture of nervousness and excitement. I immediately knew that these letters were extremely important to me, yet I couldn’t place exactly why. In order to understand what made them so special I began opening me giggle. By reading the letter I understood that she was someone with whom I could’ve shared all my teen secrets. She wouldn’t have blamed me for anything or have gossiped to my friends. The next letter I opened was written by my brother while I was abroad in the US. He put a lot of effort into designing the paper – he used illumination, like in the beginning of rare old books, a huge letter ornately designed to begin the letter proper. There are decorative lines all over the page. I felt really special reading it, because I knew he had spent a fair amount of time doing this just for me and nobody else. During that same time my grandmother started writing letters to me as well, trying to cheer me up during bouts of homesickness. To make me smile she added funny stickers. Unfortunately, she has since passed on and in those moments when her absence becomes this spot of emptiness, other than a few pictures, I only have her letters to make me smile and feel close to her again. Staring down at my letters, touched by their contents and the way they made me feel, I started wondering why people nowadays don’t write letters anymore. The only explanation I could come up with was that there must be shift in lifestyle. We all know that nowadays everybody is in a rush, regardless of whether it is our jobs or our studies. It seems like people are competing wherever you look. It’s no However, the things we write in a text message or an email aren’t as personal as they are a letter. They’re nice that day, but are typed up too quickly to have any lasting impact. Someone who writes a letter every now and then knows how much affection and love is put into what is written down. On top of that, letters are much more than their contents; their displays of affection and consoling words. Just the simple fact that much this person values the recipient. The words captured on paper are not going to be destroyed by a virus, a data crash or a cramped mailbox. This way there will always be an authentic memory of someone important – as is the case with my grandmother’s letters. Soon it’ll be Valentine’s Day again. Make a special present for your dearest – give them some of your precious time. In this way you prove to them how important they are in your life. Give them a little piece of you that they can carry with them wherever they go.

It‘s 3 pm on a Thursday afternoon, and for half an hour now, I‘ve been sitting in front of an empty, white page. By midnight, this menacingly blank sheet of paper needs to transmute into an elegantly written 900-word article, which I will have to send in not later than 12 pm (if I don‘t want to be killed by our editor, at least...). I‘m feeling tense, nervous and fairly stressed. This is where my – possibly a little unreasonable – experiment starts: How to be creative under pressure.

What comes to mind when I think of great performances? Well, when I was a child I was always the one dancing in the wrong direction on stage during a dancing performance. Without a doubt, fairly embarrassing. Probably this is why I gave up on my career as a performer ;-) Nevertheless, when it comes to creativity, there are numerous ways it can be expressed. Campuskunst is exactly what you want and need if you think YOU are creative and your talent – whatever that may be – can’t be hidden from the rest of the world. Certainly, you can also be part of an amazing audience who supports those imaginative people (just like I was)!

I perceived art as something abstract - expensive paint on expensive canvas, depicting mental old men’s colorful ‘Hirngespinste’ and barely-clad women draped on couches. ‘Do not touch’ is a warning that still pops up in my mind whenever I think of art. The cheerful sparrow and the little bee, printed on postcards, grace the walls of every second them at bars and cafes, for free, but have you ever wondered where they came from? From ancient times until today art has always touched people. With art human beings are able to express their feelings in a much more powerful way than with words. Art is a universal language everyone understands all around the world, regardless of which culture or country one belongs to. However, it’s not accepted everywhere if artists express their opinions in public. Consider, for example, China, where a man was arrested for precisely this reason.

Modern art polarizes. Lovers vs. Objectors – while some of us love it, a lot of people share the opinion of America’s most popular comicstrip artist, Al Capp, who once stated: “[Abstract art is] a product of the untalented, sold by the unprincipled to the utterly bewildered.” Admittedly, thinking of artists who smash vegetables against walls and call it art afterwards, one can almost understand such an opinion. But don’t you think it is kind of silly to reduce modern art to tomato sauce trickling off museum walls? Doesn’t it offer more than wannabe artists who sell meaningless garbage?

Usually when you enter an art museum you expect to see pastoral landscapes, people adorned in old-timey dress or warscenes or from the Bible. Nobody will reproach you for this, because the pieces you think you’ll see are the ones you adamantly learned about in school.
