Pruning trees The beauty of a garden is reflected primarily in the show of flourishing, healthy plants it contains. Be they evergreen or deciduous, fruit-bearing or ornamental, trees are a fundamental feature, whether of large landscaped areas and parks or small town gardens, as they generate perspective depth, create intimate and inviting corners, and give shade in summer. Trees and plants need to be tended carefully

Trees and hedges

and treated continuously: so here are a few thoughts on the more important operations involved in ensuring they are properly looked after.

Why, how and when to prune? There are several reasons why trees and plants need pruning: to check excessive growth; to control the development of grafted plants (fruit-bearing or ornamental); to promote flowering or fruiting; to give new life to ageing or weakened plants; to clear away dead branches that have died off or are growing irregularly, and thus control the shape of the plant; to correct imbalances caused by previous pruning; and to favour the outcome of a transplantation, reducing leaf transpiration. Pruning requires skill and patience; it is important to keep the harmony and growth of the tree in mind, avoiding injudicious

knot, preferably on branches of smaller rather than large diameter.

Select the most suitable machine The use of suitable pruning equipment will help to ensure that plants grow in the proper way and make them easier to look after. Selection of the best tool is evaluated on the basis of individual needs and preferences, taking the advice of experts. Pruning operations can be done using chain saws and pruners: the market offers a wide variety of chain saws to cater for the different requirements of users everywhere. Anyone with a small garden can use one of these machines simply for pruning the thicker branches of trees, but if there happens to be a fireplace in the home, a chainsaw will also be handy for chopping up logs. The same goes for pruners: small pruning chain saws that can be used to cut branches located high up and not easily accessible.

Growing and keeping a luxuriant hedge Before planting a hedge, care must be taken to plot the position of trees or shrubs so as to ensure compliance with legal constraints and with any pertinent local regulations. The best time to plant a hedge is between the beginning of autumn and the beginning of spring. To cultivate a full hedge of the desired shape, the single bushes or shrubs must be planted close together, and it will be necessary to trim the topmost branches from the second year of growth

periodic thinning out of unduly dense growth, so that air can circulate at the centre of the foliage and strengthen the base of the plant; also keeping the outer surface compact by frequently trimming new growth, being careful at the same time not to take too much off and open up unsightly and “holes that can be harmful to the plant; and removing dry or damaged growth, especially in spring and autumn.

Cleaning up leaves and other debris Lawns and paths can be kept clear of leaves, twigs and all kinds of debris using blowers and vacuum cleaners, offered in hand-held and backpack versions. From appliances available currently on the market, users can find the technological solution best able to meet their particular operating requirements. These are specificpurpose machines, easy to handle, that will get the job done simply, swiftly and quietly. Certain models of blower, generally with an internal combustion engine, can be converted easily to operate as vacuum cleaners by fitting a special collection kit, with a blade by which vacuumed material is chopped up to reduce the volume when inside the bag. They can also be equipped with anti-vibration systems that isolate the engine from the handgrips and the body of the machine, significantly reducing the level of vibration transmitted to the operator when in use.

Chain saws and pruners

A complete range of items for home and professional users alike. Tools for DIY projects, cutting up firewood, pruning, tree-felling. Quality, dependable performance, simplicity of use and maintenance: winning features offered by a family of products designed with the practical needs of users in mind, and developed applying the very latest technological solutions.

Proper maintenance of chain saw and pruner After every 8-10 hours of operation, remove the cover and clean the air filter, replace if damaged or excessively soiled. Check the condition of the fuel filter periodically. Clean the cylinder fins periodically by brushing, or blasting with compressed air. Inspect and clean the spark plug periodically. Check the electrode gap periodically. After every 30 hours of operation, remove the screw on the bevel drive and check the grease level (pruner). Check and, if necessary, replace the chain safety stop (chain saw). Turn the guide bar and make sure that the lubrication holes are free from impurities (chain saw).

Guide to chain saw and pruner selection For general tasks in and around the home, such as cutting up firewood, light pruning or small DIY building jobs, an electric chain saw is just the job. Rated from 1.5 to 2 kW, this machine is ideal for performing even the most demanding tasks quickly and comfortably. For lopping and limbing, chopping down small plants and cutting up firewood, we recommend a lightweight machine of between 4 and 5 Kg with a displacement of between 35 and 45 cm³. For intensive work requiring maximum reliability and consistent long-term performance, the best machines are professional chain saws, with over 50 cm³ displacement. Weighing just 5 to 10 Kg, they are ideal for felling and cutting up large trees. For pruning jobs, the ideal machines are professional pruning chain saws, which provide the perfect blend of power, lightweight construction and easy handling. Equipped with a top handle, they are ideal for professional pruning operations and other precision work, such as grafting or surgery carried out on wounded or diseased plants. For lopping and trimming overhead, or wherever there is uneven or sloping ground to contend with, a pruner is best. Thanks to a telescopic pole, cuts can be made up to 5 metres above ground, and therefore even on the highest branches. The saw itself is adjustable through intermediate angular settings from 0° to 90°.

Hedgetrimmers

Suitable for topiary and general gardening; machines that do a perfect job, characterized by the cleanest of cutting actions. These are machines featuring an excellent blend of power with ease of handling and operation: tools anyone can use, young or old, beginner or expert. Quality blades are guaranteed to give a clean cut, indispensable both for the visual end result, and for the health of plants.

Sharpen the blade periodically with the special tool provided. Clean the machine regularly with a soft brush or a cloth. Periodically, inspect the air and fuel filter (models with petrol engine), and replace if necessary.

Proper maintenance of hedgetrimmer Check the condition of the blade. If excessive wear is evident, contact a service centre. After each session, free the blade of any debris that has collected; when clean, spray the blade with a light coating of thin oil to prevent rust.

Clean the cylinder fins regularly, using a brush or compressed air (models with petrol engine). Periodically, inspect the spark plug, check the electrode gap (0.5 mm) and verify the condition of the exhaust silencer (models with petrol engine). Grease the speed reduction/drive mechanism every 20 working hours.

Guide to hedgetrimmer selection For tending and cutting hedges with small trunks located near to houses, even in spaces where access may be difficult, the best option is an electric model rated 600 or 700 Watts, guaranteeing agility, easy handling and minimal noise. On the other hand, professional hedgetrimmers are just what you need to confidently tackle all types of hedge, no matter how tough or dense. Generally rated at over 600 Watt, they guarantee consistent long-term efficiency with maximum productivity and minimum effort. Hedgetrimmer blades can have single or double cutting edges and are between 60 and 75 cm in length. Optional features such as the primer ensure trouble-free ignition even at low temperatures. The dual safety switch and the shockproof material used in construction are designed to protect the user and safeguard the integrity of the machine. The handgrip turns through 180째 allowing operation even close to walls, with the machine held at an angle. 10

Blower/Vacuum cleaners

Powerful and efficient tools for clearing any surface of leaves, twigs and debris generally, whether for the home user or for the professional operating in public areas. Special care has been taken over the design of devices designed to guarantee user comfort, also to ensure low noise operation and minimize environmental impact.

Proper maintenance of blower After every 10 hours operation, clean the air filter by shaking out thoroughly; replace if damaged or worn. Check the condition of the fuel filter periodically; if soiled excessively, discard and fit a replacement. Clean the cylinder fins regularly, using a brush or compressed air. Periodically, clean the spark plug and check the electrode gap (0.5 mm). Check the condition of the exhaust silencer; in the case of the 62 cm3 version, remove the flame-trap mesh from the silencer after every 30/40 hours operation and clean off carbon deposits.

Guide to blower selection For gardeners or home users who need to tidy up flowerbeds, walkways and greenery, the most suitable machines are handheld blowers with displacements ranging from 25 to 30 cm続. Backpack blowers, with variable displacements from 30 to 70 cm続, are the better option for clearing much larger areas whether rural (such as hazel and chestnut groves, farmyards and forecourts) or urban (parks, stadia, flowerbeds and roads). Certain models can be converted easily to operate as vacuum cleaners by fitting a special collection kit, with a blade that chops up vacuumed material to reduce its volume inside the bag. They can also be equipped with systems that significantly reduce the vibration transmitted to the operator when in use.

Lawnmower, brushcutter or garden tractor? There are three types of equipment offering a complete solution to the various needs encountered in the care of a lawn. In fact, the ability of the turf to flourish will depend not least on the machine used to cut the grass. In practice, the use of the right appliance will make work in the garden more relaxing and pleasurable and bring better results. Here, we look at the best way to go about making a choice.

The brushcutter

Mulching In addition to the benefits for the lawn, mulching helps solve the problem of how to dispose of grass clippings, as these are simply chopped up finely and spread over the turf.

gardens), and models for professionals, indispensable when working large areas and on irregular lawns with depressions or ridges. Some models are selfpropelling, which makes for greater operator comfort when mowing large expanses, and working on slopes or slightly uneven soils. If the lawnmower is equipped with a mulching kit, the need to dispose of clippings is largely eliminated, since these are finely fragmented and strewn on the turf, retaining moisture and essential nutrients.

The garden tractor These offer the ideal solution for large gardens, and for parkland and public green spaces. Sturdily built and easy to handle, machines of this type have a small turning circle to simplify manoeuvres in amongst plants and shrubs. They generally have a side or rear outlet duct for connection to a grass catcher. Like lawnmowers, certain models of garden tractor can be converted by means of a simple kit to operate in mulching mode. 15

every job. Sharpen the blade periodically.

Guide to brushcutter or trimmer selection The best machines for relatively small areas are electric trimmers. Generally rated between 500 and 1000 Watt, they are ideal for trimming jobs on small, level areas with obstacles. On more or less level surfaces near obstructions, brushcutters are the better option. For grass cutting and trimming jobs, a brushcutter of between 25 and 40 cm続 displacement will be enough; more demanding tasks on uneven ground should be performed using more powerful brushcutters of between 40 and 60 cm続 displacement. For performing jobs on surfaces with particularly accentuated height differences, or among reeds and thicker undergrowth, or if conditions are rendered generally more difficult by obstacles, sloping ground or the intensity of use, backpack models of 40 and 60 cm続 displacement are preferable.

Lawnmowers

An extensive range of lawn care solutions. Small gardens or large parks; machines for occasional users and for professional contractors and groundsmen. All models are designed taking account of their typical operating environment, and of customer preferences with regard to use and maintenance. A wide and diversified offering able to meet a variety of needs with innovative and hi-tech solutions.

Proper maintenance of lawnmower Periodically, check the oil level and the fuel level (models with petrol engine). Make certain that the cutting area (under the deck), the grass catcher, and the machine in general, are cleaned regularly and thoroughly. Check the sharpness of the blade periodically. Inspect and clean the air filter periodically. Check the engine oil periodically and renew if necessary, inspect the drive belts and pulley of the transmission system, clean the variable speed unit thoroughly, and inspect the wheel bearings, lubricating if necessary.

Guide to lawnmower selection For gardens spanning up to 900 m², the best option is an electric lawnmower, with plastic or steel deck. Equipped with an electric motor, these machines are ideal due to their compact size and manoeuvrability, with a cutting width that generally ranges between 30 and 50 cm. For larger expanses of up to 2000 m², models with cutting width of 40 to 55 cm are more suitable. Comprising a robust structure with steel deck, they are available in the push-type and self-propelled versions. For areas exceeding 1200 m² the best option is a self-propelled model, which will reduce the effort needed when working on uneven or sloping ground. The ideal machines for big gardens (between 2000 and 2600 m²) are self-propelled professional models. Offering a cutting width of 40 to 55 cm, they combine the advantages of tough construction materials (aluminium deck) with dependable performance, in terms of optimum work rate and shorter job times.

Robotmowers

Robotmowers are an innovative lawn care solution that dispense with the need to cut the grass, leaving the lawn constantly perfectly manicured while also dispensing with the need to dispose of grass cuttings. Completely independent operation: when the robotmowers need to recharge they return automatically to the charging station; power consumption is negligible, with zero CO2 emissions. No noise disturbance in the garden and neighbourhood. Available in a comprehensive range of three models for lawn sizes of up to 2,000 m2.

Once a week check the blades for damage and sharpen

them every 3-4 weeks. Change the blades every 6 months

or sooner if they show evident signs of deterioration. Once a week clean the area around the wheels carefully using a brush or a cloth, and ensure the wheels spin

freely; make sure the front wheels are able to steer without

obstructions. Inspect the electrical contact surfaces for signs of dirt or

they show evident signs of burning.

Guide to robotmower selection ORION is the ideal machine for homeowners with lawns of up to 2,000 m² in size. Optimal cutting results are guaranteed even in the presence of a large number of obstacles and highly irregularly shaped lawn surfaces.

If the lawn has a particularly complex layout we recommend model 1200 or 2000 which can work simultaneously with two charging stations, to be installed at opposite ends of the garden.

For larger lawns choose model 2000, which combines longer working time with the facility for electrically controlled cutting height adjustment directly from the display, thus making it possible to optimize cutting performance.

34

A perfect lawn in a few simple steps. Once-only preparation in a few simple steps: • Install the charging station • Install the boundary cable in the lawn using the supplied staples • Calibrate ORION • Set the operating times • ORION is ready for use Programming, first-time operation: • Position ORION next to the charging station and switch it on • Enter the PIN code • Press the HOME button to test the charging station (except model 700) • Start the calibration procedure and set the days and times of operation • Switch the rain sensor on or off (except model 700) Boundary cut function Thanks to this function ORION cuts the grass along the perimeter wire in the preset boundary area. The day and time of this function can be freely programmed.

Designed for discerning users, professional gardeners and groundsmen, these tools are used in conjunction with lawnmowers and are ideal for keeping the lawn healthy by eliminating moss and thatch.

Proper maintenance of scarifier Check the state of the blades before every use, sharpen or replace as necessary. Clean the machine immediately after each use. Empty and clean the collection bag.

Scarifiers

Clean the bottom of the equipment, as well as the roller or scarifier. Remove all dirt using a rag or brush. Do not clean the machine with running water or high pressure washers.

Guide to scarifier selection Used for removing thatch and moss from the lawn surface, they are equipped with a robust structure and powerful engine, to take on even the toughest of terrains. Lawns should be scarified at least twice a year, as this will aerate the soil and enable moisture, air and nutrients to reach the roots of the grass, favouring steady and healthy growth.

An important feature to look out for is the height adjustment system with memory, which ensures that the machine can be set down at the same height when repositioned. Generally available with a cutting width of between 40 and 50 cm. Models equipped with bearing-mounted wheels ensure excellent propulsion, whatever the type of surface.

Wheeled brushcutters/Flail mowers

A range of products designed for discerning home users, produce growers and landscape maintenance contractors. Ideal for cutting down and removing long, thick grass, they are distinguished by their extremely robust design, cutting power and comfortable operation, which enables the user to get the job done quickly and efficiently.

After each use clean the cutter assembly housing and clear the engine of any residual vegetation. Regularly check that the cutting blade is sharp, so to obtain the cleanest possible cut. Replace the gasket of the blade brake after every 100

Proper maintenance of wheeled brushcutter/flail mower

hours of use. Lubricate the bearings, axles, front/rear wheels and chain after every 25 hours of use.

Before each use ensure that the cooling intake area and the engine cylinder are free from dirt.

Check the oil level after every 100 hours (minimum). Sharpen and balance the blade after every 20 hours of use.

Guide to wheeled brushcutter/flail mower selection Home users can choose from semi-professional models, which are extremely robust but also compact and easy to handle. Equipped with centralised cutting adjustment, they are ideal for cleaning mediumsized areas infested with weeds, scrub or other types of invasive vegetation.

For more demanding and continuous work, such as that performed by farmers or professional contractors, a professional model is needed. Equipped with professional blade (wheeled brushcutter) and professional cutting unit (flail mower), they assure excellent chopping quality, even on dense undergrowth and medium-sized shrubs.

Garden tractors

Ideal for gardens of all shapes and sizes, parkland and public green spaces. Tough and easy handling, these are the perfect machines for anyone interested in high work rates. Incorporating the latest solutions technology has to offer, they give maximum satisfaction in terms of comfort and performance, even to the most demanding of users.

Proper maintenance of garden tractor After every 25 hours operation, check that the blade is fastened securely, and sharp. Every 20 hours, check the adjustment of the propulsion brake, the state of the drive belts and the condition of the blade clutch: if worn, contact a service centre. Make a periodic inspection of all mechanical fastenings and general lubrication. Check the level of the oil, replacing after the first 10 hours operation and every 50 hours thereafter. Inspect the air filter and fuel filter, and replace if clogged excessively. Check the pressure of the tyres.

Guide to garden tractor selection Garden tractors with side discharge (for areas up to 6.000 m²): these are small and compact models with a tight turning radius, suitable for manoeuvring in confined spaces. They can be converted to operate in mulching mode. Garden tractors with rear discharge for small and medium-sized areas (up to 3.000 m²): known as ride-on tractors (engine under driver seat), rated up to 13 HP. Compact and neatly proportioned, these machines afford ease of manoeuvre in gardens with a high density of plants, where grass clippings need to be collected. They can be converted to operate in mulching mode. Garden tractors with rear discharge for medium-sized areas (up to 4.000 m²): fitted with medium-large cutter assemblies (84/92 cm), they combine strength with manoeuvrability and are ideal for frequent use in the garden, where grass clippings need to be collected. Available with mechanical or hydrostatic transmission which allows the operator to control direction and speed by means of a single pedal. Garden tractors with rear discharge for larger areas (up to 7.000 m²): fitted with large cutter assembly (102 cm), designed for maintenance of large gardens where grass clippings need to be collected. lawn needs to be kept moist on the surface, and should therefore be sprinkled 2-3 times a day with moderate amounts of water. As the grass begins to grow, it will need to be watered more abundantly and less often, so that the water can penetrate well down into the soil. A mature lawn – well into spring, especially during dry spells – can be well watered every 4 or 5 days. The best time to water is undoubtedly in the early morning, as the soil cools down during the night and early watering will avoid thermal shock; also because when the sun is high, moisture will evaporate too quickly. When the lawn is particularly dry, it is advisable to water sparingly at first, and then increase the amount by stages.

the water used should never be too cold: sprayers or lances are ideal for delivering atomized water at the most suitable temperatures.

Protection of plants, hedges and lawns The preservation of green areas is a major concern, especially in the urban context: indeed plants play a role of fundamental importance not only from the health and hygiene standpoint, as the optimum antidote to pollution,

The essential purpose of these machines is to atomize the active chemical in solution with water, and spray it at the vegetation being treated. They can spread liquids (such as fungicides and pesticides) or powders formulated to safeguard the health and growth of the vegetation.

Snow throwers are ideal machines for clearing snow from patios, pavements and paths even on a slope. All models, equipped with

Snow throwers

special supergrip snow tyres or tracks, guarantee the maximum grip on all types of terrain and ground surface, even with compact or frozen snow.

Proper maintenance of snow thrower Each time the snow thrower is to be used, check the oil level and, if necessary, change the oil (refer to the operating and maintenance manual). In the electric starting model check the battery charge at least once every 3 months. Check that the tyre inflation pressure is correct. Lubricate the augers via the relative grease nipple; lubricate the ejector chute rotation ring at least once every 3 months.

Guide to snow thrower selection The model must be chosen on the basis of the snow conditions in the area of use; for example, if the snowdrifts to be removed are small, it is better to avoid excessively wide augers (efficiency of the snow thrower is optimal only when the impeller is completely filled with snow). Models with limited working width are also the most suitable for working in confined spaces or when the Garden has many obstacles and a large number of curves. Vice versa, select models with wider augers (and consequently with more powerful engines) combined with crawler track transmission to clear heavy snowfalls. If the snow thrower is to be garaged in a place that is poorly protected from low temperatures, choose an electric start model to avoid starting problems. The heated handgrips provide the maximum level of operator comfort during use of the snow thrower.
