SESAR Master Plan Update Campaign “Simplicity, Pragmatism and Delivery” Brussels, October 5, 2011 - With less than a year to go before the next version of the European ATM Master Plan is published, some 120 aviation stakeholders meeting in Brussels on October 5 confirmed their commitment to work together to refine future air traffic management planning. Given the complexities of air traffic, this is a gargantuan task, but the stakeholders – including European regulators, air traffic service providers, airlines, airports, the military and the manufacturing industry – agreed at the Master Plan Update launch event that their efforts should focus on three core principles: simplifying the Master Plan into a more readable and useable document; applying a pragmatic, stakeholder-specific approach; and delivering results in a timely and efficient manner. Patrick Ky, Executive Director of the SESAR Joint Undertaking (SJU), pledged that the SESAR partnership would continue to link all the stakeholders with a formal institutional process. “The Master Plan is the living link between development activities and deployment decisions,” he said. “It is our duty for the Master Plan update to come up with solutions that make business sense.” Matthew Baldwin, the European Commission’s Director for Air Transport at DG MOVE emphasised the importance of global interoperability in the fast evolving international context. “Interoperability is a must,” he said. “The update of the Master Plan should take into consideration the global context and contribute to it accordingly. It is a real opportunity for Europe to support the ICAO standardisation effort.” EUROCONTROL’s ATM Director Bo Redeborn underlined the need to keep up with the rapid changes in the sector. “As SESAR moves towards the deployment phase, it is vital that we have an up-to-date Master Plan reflecting the latest forecasts and the current developments in European and, indeed, global ATM,” he said. The next version of the European ATM Master Plan, planned for summer 2012, will address the following issues:

Preparing the deployment phase, including the connection between the research and development activities, deployment scenarios and performance needs;

Ensuring global Interoperability;

Updating the risk management plan.
