INTRO

t: Emanuele Cucuzza

The roles of communication and the visual artist This is my first editorial after a long time. Usually, I prefer to give centre stage first of all to the people we tell you about and then to Image in Progress, which can speak for itself, thanks to its strengths, work, results and contents. Obviously, every issue marks the evolution of the entire project and, maybe, of my view of the sector. So, it is thrilling to discover where this road is leading me and see the proper perception of all those readers who identify details and leitmotivs in the composition and selections of every issue. I didn’t think that certain aspects could be really noticed, and noticed they were‌ sometimes even before I did. This synergy is both comforting and an honour but is also a responsibility and I want to thank all those readers who follow this magazine so carefully, giving in return an interpretation that has just materialized before my eyes. 2 IMAGEINPROGRESS.com

Visual communication is becoming progressively central and the use that is made of it is really upsetting in too many cases. Maybe out of a misguided sense of romanticism or cynicism, or simply out of concern for discreteness or respect for the readers, I do not wish to talk about certain issues in a context that would be inappropriate. However, I wonder what responsibility visual art professionals and artists should take. I believe this is emphasized clearly in this issue, especially in certain interviews‌ Whatever the gift each of us is given, it is the use that is made of it that defines more than any talent.

PhotogrVphy Magazine and Grant

a new media-partnership you should definitely follow…

Born 1986 in Elblag, Poland, Maciej Leszczynski currently lives and works in Gdansk on the Baltic coast. Holder of university degrees in molecular biology, botany and project management. Managing editor in the PhotogrVphy Magazine and co-founder of the annual PhotogVphy Grant. He’s also self taught photographer, specializing mainly in architectural and landscape photography. “Run since 2015, PhotogrVphy Magazine and Grant are non-profit initiatives started with idea of creating a context for creative initiatives and a promotion of new trends in photography. PhotogrVphy Magazine focuses mostly on promotion of interesting projects submitted by emerging photographers from around the world, while annual Grant awards $1000 annually to the applicant with the most inspirational photographic concept to support visual projects by the artist. Each edition of this competition has different subjects. In the 2017 edition, you can submit images from the following categories: Architecture, Conceptual, Nature, Photojournalism and Culture. The contest is free to enter.” 14 IMAGEINPROGRESS.com

How come your magazine project an the contest? “When we have started PhotogrVphy Magazine with a group of friends, photography enthusiasts just like me, we were just thinking about creating a unique place where we could share our inspirations and interesting projects to the worldwide audience. With an increasing popularity of the magazine, we were able to start the Grant with cash prize to annually selected artist. We strive to inspire participants to improve their photographic skills and develop their vision. There is only one Grand Prize winner, but looking on extremely high level of submitted project, we have decided to publish a whole gallery of nominees. With a great help from our media partners and international jury members, artists have the opportunity to gain worldwide exposure, push their careers forward and be recognized by art galleries, curators, media, and cultural institutions from all over the world.” What are the results so far? “As I previously mentioned we were positively surprised how popular the first edition became. Among over 3000 participants about 250 entries were selected as nominees. The level of submitted works was extremely high so the jury had a tough choice but finally a young photographer from United States, Drew Nikonowicz (born in St. Louis, 1993) was selected to be Grand Prize Winner with his project “This World and Others Like It”. “This World and Others Like It” investigates the role of the 21st century explorer by combining computer modeling with analogue photographic processes. Drawing upon the language of 19th Century survey images, Drew questions their relationship with current methods of record making. Also Patryk Karbowski from Poland, Aleksey Kondratyev from Kyrgyzstan, Matt Hamon from United States and Elena Anosova from Russian Federation were distinguished as winners of their categories.” How did you develop your interest in photography? “My photographic passion started during my studies on university. I was searching for some activity besides my scientific interest and work. Photography comes naturally with documenting

my travels and stays with me to this day. Through this years I have discovered many great artists who inspired my previous and current work: Michael Kenna, Bernd and Hilla Becher, Joel Sternfeld, Andreas Gursky, Peter Bialobrzeski, Nadav Kander, just to mention a few. Now I’m taking photos for nearly 10 years, but I’m thinking that this is just a beginning of my journey.” What are your working on? What are your next projects? “With my growing involvement in PhotogVphy Magazine and Grant I’m planning to work some more on their promotion to grow it bigger and more visible. We have just started a second edition of Grant, it is open for submissions, the final deadline is August 31st, 2017.

Regarding my photographic works I’ve just finished a project documenting architectural environment in the city of Chongqing, China. With the population of 32 million it is the most populous and probably fastest growing Chinese municipality. It is a place of constant development and transformation. My next project will be run in Poland, at this stage I’m collecting materials, background and doing some research. It will be big documentary work and I will be able to tell you more details when it starts this spring.” www.photogrvphy.com www.grant.photogrvphy.com www.maciejleszczynski.com IMAGEINPROGRESS.com 15

PHOTOGRAPHY CONTESTS

Call for entries of your International Contest URBAN Photo Awards 2017 has started, what are the numbers of past editions? “Urban sees every year thousand of participating pictures and hundreds of photographers from all over the world. It is an always growing international contest, one of the very few that goes “over the boundaries” of Internet offering to photographers real visibility through dozens of international photo exhibitions. Only in 2016 URBAN saw more then 3.500 pictures uploaded, by more then 900 participants, focalized mostly in Europe, USA and Eastern Countries (India especially), and realized 32 exhibitions displaying about 700 pictures. The Total price value was more then 4.000 euro. Behind it all, there is always the pursue of enhancement of photographic talent and quality.” What is the subject of the Contest this year? “Urban 2017 is dedicated to Urban Photography. The aim is to explore the contemporary through all forms of photography based in the urban fabric. The star of the show: the City. Daily life in the city and in small villages, artistic views, architectural geometries, the fragments of colour that break the city greyness. The thematic areas are seven: Street Photography, the many aspects of the urban fabric and the lives that inhabit it; Architecture, buildings, streets, urban geometries; Social City, places, events and gatherings in the City; Urban Art, the relationship between people and art in the City; Transport, different style of mobility in the city; Green Life, green areas, places, projects and sustainable lives and the last one Visions, that is a new area thought as a laboratory of artistic and experimental photos outside previous thematic

areas (the main theme is always Urban Life). In this case the post-production is allowed. Moreover there is a section for portfolios and projects, where each participant can submit a series of images oriented to show his or her idea through photographs.” Who can participate and how? “Urban looks for talent and quality both among professional and amateur photographers, offering them an international stage from which to get noticed.” Are there any fees to pay for participation? “For Themed Photos the participation costs € 10 as entry fee for the first picture; further photos may be entered at a cost of € 5 per photo. For Stories & Portfolios, the participation costs € 10 as entry fee for portfolio, regardless of the number of photos that make up the portfolio (min 3 photos, no more than 12). Each participant can submit a maximum of 5 portfolios.” How will winners be selected? “The presented works will be selected by dotART and judged in a final manner by a prestigious international Jury. Finalists will be published on the website in alphabetical order, without ranking at the end of July 2017. The absolute winner of Urban 2017 will be personally chosen by Jury President Maurizio Galimberti (see interview on page 57 of Image in Progress 2, editor’s note) and he will be awarded personally by him during the award ceremony during the International Photo Festival Trieste Photo Days at the end of October in Trieste, (IT). Final ranking will be published on URBAN website and Facebook page.” What are the prizes and what is the total amount? “First prize for the contest winner will be of 1.000 euro plus accommodation in Trieste for IMAGEINPROGRESS.com 17

PHOTOGRAPHY CONTESTS

the winner. The other prizes will be 24 along with 16 Honourable Mentions for a total prize of more then 3.000 euros, and the chance to be chosen for Urban 2017 Summer Exhibitions around Europe.” Why to apply? Why to partecipate? What is the visibility of winning photographs? “The highest placing works will be published on the competition’s website and will be displayed in a collective exhibit on October/November 2017 in Trieste during Trieste Photo Days 2017 festival together with publication of the winners on our media partners world wide Magazines. Some of the submitted photos may in addition be selected for exhibits in Italy and abroad.” Among partners, other than Image in Progress, I can see many international names... Even if it is too soon, how will you manage the Winner’s Exhibition and the Awards Ceremony? “From April we will be working on details about TPD Festival. I can already tell you that we will have a public free call for dummy about a personal photo book, with a winner also selected by Maurizio Galimberti and produced by dotART, a nice price for a nice urban photo project…” How do you live along with in the city of Trieste? What is the cooperation until now by the City Hall? “Hopefully this year we will have a good support from the City Hall and Government Region, with nice and important locations for personal exhibition. It seems that they finally understood the potential of this initiative.” Italy has an important historical tradition about photography, what is happening now? “A lot of local initiatives, done with a lot of passion, low budgets, often missing a central coordination; as usual in Italy, government policies are not oriented to professionals but to friends and political issues.” About the Italian photography history that has to be written, what Urban Photo Awards represents? “A very good chance for Photography, as it is Trieste Photo Days: an international contest 18 IMAGEINPROGRESS.com

and a festival focused on Urban Photography. Today, most of the people in the world live in a urbanized area and there billions of pictures are shot every year.” Among your many initiatives, I have become curious about “Foodgraphy”. Considering the international success of TV program MasterChef and the Italian undeniably popular cuisine, you chose a perfect country and a perfect timing for promoting this kind of photography, both traditional and experimental... what exactly is Foodgraphia? “Foodgraphia is an Exhibion of Food Art & Photography. It comes from my last project www.shootfood.it, launched in September 2016, an authorial project about food photography. I started it because food in Italy is very important. In the last years we saw the explosion of cooking, food blogging, food story telling, etc. but the quality of the visuals often is not at the level of the food and it misses artistic values, so I thought it was about time for an authorial food photography project.” What is happening to contemporary still life photography? “Professionally not a great period, but I see a good potential in B2C cultural activities.” Are you expecting to organize again another edition next year? “Foodgraphia Exibithion went really well, we had a good public success, a lot of visitors, a good press diffusion. A very nice book produced, also published in digital version at https://issuu. com/shootfood/docs/foodgraphia . I understood Foodgraphia answers to a demand, and we see will go for a second edition in 2018. By the way, in May 2017 there will be Milano Food Week, an important festival about food and Ho.Re.Ca. world, sponsored this year by the City Hall, the Regional Government and other Government Institutions. As Shootfood we are organizing with them two dedicated projects about Food Photography. But this is a gossip :) !” www.urbanphotoawards.com

URBAN Photo Awards looks for talent and quality both among professional and amateur photographers, offering them an international stage from which to get noticed. The highest placing photos in the competition will take part in series of ”travelling” photography exhibits. Since 2011, URBAN exhibits were held in Italy, Germany, Poland, Hungary, Latvia, Slovenia, Croatia, Cyprus, Ukraine and Colombia.

NOVEL

t: Anita Zechender

Photos of a Soul - CHAPTER 9 - Contemporary art lives in Queens The lights of dawn seen from up here have the scent of the unlimited. Ethan and I took a break on this terrace, surrounded by the lights of the starry sky of Queens, yesterday night after the poetry reading that we do every Friday. I stood still for two hours, trying to photograph the impossible. I couldn’t imagine that my lenses could turn into telescopes, able to grasp the moment before the extinction for whatever extraterrestrial activity, that once lived on one of the planets of one of the many galaxies of the universe. This morning while the Brooklyn rooftops were still smoking, I woke up Ethan with a kiss, after taking his picture. I have captured in a photograph all of those Beings that I love very much, it was difficult to leave the house. A slight and childish anxiety clamped my throat, and then pressed on my chest. But I did it. I wore that boiled woolen hat that I like so much, it always makes me feel appropriate, and a scarf that I found in a secondhand clothing shop in Nolita. It is starting to get cold over here on this side of the world, on this side of the ocean. My comfortable shoes kept trace of the destiny of a new day here in New York, my photographs lay in a vintage, blindingly bright red bag, where I always put the entire world, waiting to get out and tell a whole new story. I get on the line 7 of the subway, towards Long Island City. If you love contemporary art and you are looking for an unconventional place in this moment, then it is Queens you need to go to. It is the most multiethnic neighborhood in New York, a rising area, constantly growing from both an artistic and a human point of view. These past months, years, I have been asking myself how I could be able to undo that inexplicable sense of incompleteness I feel inside when I cannot write one single line on an empty sheet, when I look in the caldron of words for the right one, that single word able to represent the caress or the fist I feel in my heart. But this does not happen with photographs. They wait for me. They look for me, and in a single moment they are defined for eternity. Here we are at the Socrates Sculpture Park, which hosts temporary art installations that tell their story by emerging from the skyline of this heterogeneous metropolis just to end up in the surrounding green. A pyramid made of terraces of grass and flowers, two trees created using trunks and branches weaved together. All of this is what I had in my mind, this was what was silently climbing up in my soul. The search for a zen and minimalist atmosphere

bring me to the nearby Noguchi Museum, where stone and metallic sculptures tell me the story of a faraway Japan. In this area full of factories and hangars, my gaze gets lost and discovers the MoMa PS1, which is located inside an old school, with its hallways, cafés and classrooms. I start running. It’s as if between those desks and teaching posts, used as tables, the unclear images of unexpected faces appear one after the other, for a split second I think I can hear a young and fascinating violinist playing an inverse canon. I cannot see his face, I fix him in an image but suddenly I can’t understand anymore if he is only in my imagination. I read the menu on an old blackboard, I take a picture of it because in that specific moment I feel like I have no defined age, I am a child and at the same time I’m also a twenty year old purist running towards the first run of the most unreleased movie of the season. I have a meeting with my editor, a journalist and photographer extremely famous here in Manhattan, who is also a friend of mine and a source of continuous growth and enlightenment. I tell him I am working on a project for the Columbia University: Art, Avant-garde and Psychoanalysis of the Eternal Feminine. And it’s in these words that I can hear my soul re-emerge, it’s here that writing, the study of psychoanalysis, the academic research and the photography are reborn. I stop. I shoot. The picture is what connects everything. What transforms everything. It is difficult to have the person who is watching you, understand the story you were wishing to tell. Sometimes it can’t be done. Sometimes it can. But as soon as you see a glimpse of revelation on the face of the person in front of you, you forget the barriers and the sacrifices that this job often requires, and everything gains sense and harmony again. On the park along the East River, I sit down and perform some Asana postures during my yoga class. I breathe. A stranger on a kayak gently caresses the water and, while looking at the Upper East Side, I feel like the Eternal Feminine (*), the favorite subject of the picture of the century. It’s 6:00 pm and somebody on the other side of the river is shooting their masterpiece. *Ewigweibliche: the “Eternal Feminine” is a term which was first used by Wolfgang Goethe. “Ewig”, eternal, conveys the force of the female who drawns to heaven, who gives birth to the male in the sky, giving birth out of time.

To be continued in the next issue.

*Anita Zechender, a free-lance journalist, a traveler by inclination, loves to observe the world’s nuances, understand their interconnections and leave them again free to play. After she obtained a Master’s degree in fashion, she has been researching new trends and has performed advertising work for Miss Sixty e Murphy&Nye. Writing for her has always been artwork, something that needs phantasy to be intuited, courted and loved. Photography, fashion and art unveil the eternity of time to those who have the soul to understand it. She writes about travel, photography, fashion, art and design for international magazines. Inspired by Bradbury, Nabokov, Allende and Tim Burton’s films, she is taking her first steps as a writer with a story written in installments for Image in Progress. 64 IMAGEINPROGRESS.com
