Be reviewed by professional curators! Interview with Ralf Stelander, founder and CEO of 1x.com, “the biggest curated photo community in the world.” Website title: “1x.com .” Year established: “2007.” Total registered users: “One million unique visitors every motnh.” My website is…? “A profession.” Website collaborators include: “Jacob Jovelou, Thomas Brindt.” Mission: “To gather the finest photographs in the world at one place.” Themes covered: “All major photographic genres.” What do users ever find in my selection of images that they can’t find anywhere else? “They find photos of the highest possible quality. Each photo is carefully reviewed and selected by professional curators who are experts in their particular fields of photography.” Themes that I am never going to cover in my website that are covered by other similar website? “1x is a commercial free website, so you will not see advertisement for products other than our own. This separates us from many other similar sites.” The most interesting result obtained so far thanks to the website? “That the high quality of the published material is maintained, despite the enormous amounts of photos that are uploaded. Only around 5% of all submitted photos are published on the website.” The secret of a successful website / community is? “To listen to the users and try to give them what they want, while not loosing your own vision.” Is cooperation between websites possible? “1x is very restrictive with cooperation. To cooperate with another website or company, we must feel that the theme of the cooperation is relevant with our field.” The three photography websites that I check more often: “http://photography.nationalgeographic. com/photography , http://kenrockwell.com , http://stevemccurry.com .” The three photography magazines that I cannot miss: “National Geographic, Digital SLR Photography Magazine, Kamera&Bild.” The goal that I would like to achieve? “That 1x.com is the obvious place to go to find the finest photos on the Internet.” www.1x.com

“1x is the biggest curated photo community in the world. All photos in the gallery are selected by a team of 10 professional curators and only 5% of all submitted photos are published. 1x strives to provide a real photo gallery experience, with world class photography and elegant presentation. Our goal is to inspire everyone who wants to enjoy a daily art moment without having to visit a physical photo exhibition. One million unique visitors enjoy art works on 1x every month. We consider art to be a basic human need and our vision is to promote photography as a form of art and inspire people across the globe to become photographers. We believe that everyone has an inner photographer, just waiting to be discovered. Learning is very important for us and we provide many different tools for people who want to take up a camera for the first time or take their photography to the next level. In our critique forum, especially appointed senior critics write expert feedback on your photos to help you improve. 1x is a vibrant community where you can discuss photography with members from more than 160 different countries and make new friends from all over the world. It’s a true melting pot where many different cultures meet and enrich each other. Every day 350 million photos are uploaded on Facebook alone, more than you can watch in a lifetime. Photography is more and more being reduced to a game of collecting the most likes. 1x is a barrier against this tidal wave of information, publishing only a small number of especially interesting photos every day. In a world that is spinning faster and faster and is becoming ever more stressful, 1x is an oasis of peace and beauty, where every published photo gets all the time it deserves. You only have to upload your image once to sell prints on 1x and through our 12 different partners. Our partners include Eurographics, the biggest prints provider in Europe, with thousands of stores in 62 different countries. Art directors, advertising agencies, book editors, magazines and big software companies all over the world use images from 1x every day. It is no coincidence that many photographers whose works now hang in art galleries, once were discovered on 1x. To be published on 1x is an achievement, which means great recognition.”

Business growth tips for photographers

Interview with Zach Prez, founder of Photography Spark

Is cooperation between blogs possible? “Blog partnerships are essential for success. Anytime I create a blog, I spend the first year writing for other people instead of myself. I ask other bloggers how I can help them, instead of asking them to do stuff for me. This approach gets me featured on the industry’s top websites, so I can create awareness. Then when I start writing for my own site, I already have an audience. As I help contribute to other sites it creates goodwill, and those blog owners will have no problem recommending/promoting me later when I need a boost. Anytime you can team together to create something, you’ll move faster and have a wider reach. I always tell wedding photographers to find a couple other vendors and create a resource together, like a top vendor or venue list for their area. They can each contribute a section to the guide and distribute to their subscribers. It’s a simple way to reach 3 times the people with 1/3 the effort!” The three photography websites that I check more often? “I look to Design Aglow for marketing style, Photo Shelter for resources, and Stuck in Customs for landscape and inspiration.” The three photography magazines that I cannot miss: “Outdoor Photographer (because I love nature and landscape shots), Professional Photographer, and PDN.” The goal that I would like to achieve? “The goal of any website should be to collect subscribers. Having readers’ email addresses puts you in control as the site owner, so you can contact them whenever you need to do marketing. Without a subscriber strategy, you’re crossing your fingers that visitors come back to your site later, which is never as often as you would like.” www.photographyspark.com With 10 years Internet marketing experience, Zach Prez has consulted for huge photography companies, contributed to dozens of popular websites and have been featured in magazines like Professional Photographer. He’s personally helped hundreds of photographers with SEO strategies via workshops and one-on-one coaching, plus thousands more through ebooks. IMAGEINPROGRESS.com 3

It keeps me up to date on business trends that seem to constantly change.” Mission: “Share business education for photographers.” Themes covered: “Business, marketing, sales, legal, and web topics relating to business growth.” What do readers ever read in my posts that they can’t find anywhere else? “I’m one of the few marketing specialists who focus on the photography industry, so you’re sure to find the latest search and social media strategies in addition to full length business.” Issues that I am never going to cover in my posts that are covered by other bloggers? “My posts cover the business of photography, so you won’t find ways to improve your photo quality like posing or lighting tips.” The most interesting result obtained so far thanks to the blog? “I make sure my headshot is clearly displayed across my site, which is a marketing tactic to develop trust. The moment I added my headshot I started getting more questions, comments and partnership requests since people felt comfortable approaching me (versus a faceless logo). Now people recognize me in forums and in person events since they’ve already seen my face.” The secret of a successful blog is? “Post what the users want to read instead of what you want to talk about. As a photographer, do people really want to see every session you ever shot? Probably not. They’re more interested in education and resources like how to prepare for a session, what to wear, or how to organize photos at home. Those are the posts that drive interest and word of mouth, as well as engagement on social media. While you’re competition is focused on themselves, you can focus on your potential client and establish yourself as an industry leader.”

PHOTOGRAPHY AWARDS

A wider audience for young photographers

Interview with Professor Andrzej P. Florkowski, founder and co-organizer of Poznan Photo Diploma Award competition.

Where did you get this passion for photography? “My passion for photography started when I got the first camera from my grandma at the age of 9. I started taking lots of photographs immediately.” …and how come the idea of Poznan Photo Diploma Award? “There has been an explosion of learning possibilities in the field of photography in different higher education institutions. In numerous universities and academies young talented artists make fantastic diploma works with the help of truly engaged tutors. At our University of Arts in Poznan each year lots of students graduate with very good diplomas in photography but most of them are never shown to wider audience. We wanted to compare our educational methods and results to other universities and art academies around the world and provide young photographers with wider international reception.” What are the results so far? “So far over 300 young photographers have joined PPDA contest in two editions. Each Finalist is a winner. The quality of shortlisted works is very high, at the same time they show a wide spectrum of different uses of photography as a medium. Of course there is a Grand Prix

and First Prize Winners but being in the final exhibition is already winning. Young people from different backgrounds, passionate about photography, can meet, see their works, discuss them, exchange views and ideas. PPDA opening is also a good occasion to talk to Jury members and initiate different types of cooperation with experienced experts and other photographers. It is our hope that this competition will help young artists embark on their individual artistic path after graduation. The main award is an invitation to present a solo exhibition during the next Photography Biennale in Poznan in a prestigious gallery. This works as a kind of confirmation that Jury’s decision was the right one and motivates the winner to develop a new body of works. PPDA 2011 Grand Prix winner – Jakub Karwowski presented a very good exhibition in 2013. We’re waiting for Verena Block’s show in 2015. Also the PPDA 2013 exhibition will be soon shown in Lille, France, during the Transphotographiques festival which provides wider audiences for PPDA2013 Finalists and further possibilities for international cooperation. Next edition will take place in 2015. Follow our website for updated information on participation rules.” www.photodiploma.com

Professor, Dean of Multimedia Communication Faculty Academy of Fine Arts in Poznan, Head of the 6th Photography Studio in Photography Department, member of Art Council at Union of Polish Art Photographers, historian of art, promoter of several dozens diploma projects (BA, MA and PhD), curator of several exhibitions, animator of young photographers promotion. ARTISTS’ PROMOTION

t: Michelle Bourcier

ArtMagna, a remarkable visibility for artists

Interview with Nathalie Samson, founder of ArtMagna, her passion for art brought her from luxury real estate to promotion of artists. What is ArtMagna? “ArtMagna® offers a service that provides an outstanding visibility to artists. Fourteen years of high quality events on prestigious locations followed by a faithful crowd of art lovers and collectors.” What has been the outcome of these first years? “ArtMagna’s activities have resulted in a remarkable visibility in prestigious art and life style magazines. The crowd of qualitative art lovers supporting ArtMagna has kept on growing. Through ArtMagna many unknown artists gained recognition and settled artists found a way to broaden their networks.” How did you come up with this project? “I’ve always been an amateur of beauty. At the time I was a realtor specialized in outstanding properties. I got naturally drawn by the synergy between art and beautiful architecture. After a 25-year career in luxury real estate I decided to entirely devote my energy to the promotion of artistic talents. From my years as a realtor I also kept my best contacts who are the art lovers.”

What were your past experiences in this sector? “I attended art classes at St-Luc in Brussels and I’m good at organizing and setting up exhibitions. Having visited outstanding real estate has trained my eye and developed my taste for beauty.” Do you have an open channel for new artists? “Yes, through the press and a judicious choice of top locations to exhibit their works.” How do you choose them? “They often have a colorful means of expression with cleverly assembled curves and lines.” Where did you get this passion for photography? “The paintbrush has been the ultimate tool for pictorial arts over the last centuries. Now the digital means and computer are coming up to express an exciting new esthetic language. And it’s only a beginning.” What’s new for the next events? “We just came back from Berlin and are getting ready for the Affordable Art Fair in Brussels and exhibitions in Avenue Louise 335 this year. After that: London, Paris and Saint-Petersburg.” www.artMagna.be

Nathalie Samson was born in Brussels in 1967. After studying at St Joseph College in Carlsbourg she ended her cycle by studying art at the St Luc Institute in Brussels. Subsequently she began a long and successful career in high end real estate. In 2007 she developed the real estate sector with valuable architecture in the area of Brussels and surroundings. In 2009 she acquired the ArtMagna® federation and developed a new concept with more exhibitions. She started promoting more contemporary art and that judicious choice lead to ArtMagna®’s present success. Between 2009 and 2014 she achieved to organize several high quality art events, among which in the largest European gallery, Avenue Louise on 1.250 sq.m.. Prestigious exhibitions were held in the private domain of Cureghem, a beautiful architectural ensemble of 1906 that has recently been refurbished. Successful participation at the art fairs of Cannes, Brussels and Berlin. Each month, a prestigious exhibition is announced and appreciated by the faithful followers of ArtMagna®. In 2013, Gael de Gaiffier, Lauranne van Naemen and a whole team joined ArtMagna®. To date, more than 200 artists and art professionals were made members. Projects for 2015: London and Paris. 6 IMAGEINPROGRESS.com

Educate people about photography

Interview with Sebastian Vaida, art director of Romania Photo Festival

Where did you get this passion for photography? “This passion for photography started long time ago, the same time I began going in the mountains. I suppose it was a way to express and show other people the places and moments I experienced.” …and how come the idea of PhotoRomania Festival? “The idea of a photography festival in Romania started in one cold December morning, while discussing it at a tea with a good friend, Cătălin Balog-Bellu. Actually, the idea of a festival was his and his wife’s, Monica. He then told me about it and we decided to simply do it. We were very caught up in the idea and felt really enthusiastic about it. I think the idea also came naturally, since both Cătălin and I had this spirit of “let’s do it” and the will to start new enterprises. We then immediately started to discuss how the first edition would look like and who could help us in our efforts. It wasn’t long until other photography passionate started to like the idea and join us. Some of them are still aboard, while other are joining every year.” What are the results so far and what are the most important news for next edition? “For the first edition, we simply wanted to start the idea of a photography festival. It was a first in Romania, and although other similar events already occurred, there was nothing of this kind or at this scale. This was both a positive thing, since it gave us the possibility to start from scratch and challenging as well, because it hadn’t been done before. The next editions sort of naturally developed from the first one and grew, both in quality and quantity. More and more photographers

and photography passionate joined the festival and a community is being built. In terms of statistics, over the last three editions, we had several hundred exhibitions, many premieres, tenths of photography workshops, lots of non-photography events and many interesting photography related projects. Numbers aside, we are building an idea and we are educating people about photography and its role among the arts (such as painting, sculpture, theatre). We also started the first photography museum in Romania back in 2013, which continues this year as well and will become permanent next year. This is of great importance, since we must understand our past in order to shape our future. The next edition brings thematic days, such as “Time Day”, “Family Day” or “Tech Day”, each one dedicated to a certain concept and communicated through photography. It also brings a complex Academy of over 20 photography workshops, from beginner to expert level. This is also part of our long term strategy of educating people in the art of “communicating by images”. This Academy will continue throughout the year, both in Romania and other countries. A photography scholarship is also a premiere for the next edition, and it comprises of free access to half of the workshops in the Academy, as an attempt to train those interested in long life learning. Next year, we will continue with this scholarship and also offer grants to those willing to accept our challenged with different photography projects.”

www.photoromaniafestival.ro

“I always liked photography, even if it sounds like a cliché. I first took photos without knowing what I was doing. I used to trigger and pay attention to framing, to the subject, composition. After a while, I began understanding a bit of what happened between me and the subject, meaning in the camera. And after many years, I also began understanding why I was shooting. Because I like to communicate messages, emotions and concepts. I am often asked what kind of photography I like most. And it is often hard to reply, because I don’t have a preferred type. I simply like photography as a whole. And I like images, as a means to communicate. My passion for photography is doubled by the one for psychology, where I am also involved as a lecturer and trainer. For the last 10 years, I delivered tenths of photography trainings and workshops. Back in 2009, I began editing and coordinating the online photography magazine Camera Obscura, with thematic editions, interviews and photography news. I interviewed national and international renowned photographers, and some of them are now friends or supporters of Photo Romania Festival. In 2010, I began the event that would become the largest photography festival in Romania and four years later would be included on the list of the most renowned festivals in the field by the prestigious publication The Telegraph. The next years meant the development and implementation of the festival on several levels, with a particular accent on the artistic one. Also back in 2010 I initiated a series of monthly photo projections, with guests from all over Romania, on different themes. The idea was to educate people about photography and to offer the participants the chance to interact with the authors of the images. In 2011, I co-founded Photo Romania Association, which is the organizer of Photo Romania Festival, along with Fapte Association. Together we launched a series of social projects such as Help Portrait, Christmas Nephews or Photo Voice. The same year meant the initiation and coordination of a project very dear to me, called “Top of Romania”, which is a journey of four photographers in their quest to discover the beauties of Romania.” IMAGEINPROGRESS.com 7

IN EVERY FIELD, GREATNESS IS ALWAYS ACCOMPANIED BY FAME, REPUTATION AND RAISED EXPECTATIONS. EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH FRANCO FONTANA, ONE OF THE GREATEST PHOTOGRAPHERS IN HISTORY. FAMOUS ESPECIALLY FOR HIS UNMISTAKABLE LANDSCAPES, THE COMPOSITIONS AND THE EXTOLLING OF COLOUR PHOTOGRAPHY THAT HE REPRESENTS, HE HAS ACTUALLY EXPLORED VARIOUS AREAS, WHILE REMAINING ALWAYS TRUE TO HIMSELF. HE HAS PUBLISHED AND EXHIBITED HIS WORKS PRACTICALLY EVERYWHERE, IN THE MOST PRESTIGIOUS SPACES AND NOW, AT THE AGE OF 81, HE IS STILL AT WORK WITH UNRIVALLED ENERGY AND CHARISMA, BOTH AS A PHOTOGRAPHER AND AS A MENTOR TO GENERATIONS OF PHOTOGRAPHERS, BUT ESPECIALLY PEOPLE… BECAUSE, ACCORDING TO FONTANA, “IT’S NOT WHAT YOU DO BUT WHO YOU ARE!”.
