refurbishment of what was originally a two-bedroom
industrial building in Clerkenwell in the heart of London,
England. The owner had a generous budget to upgrade the apartment from a basic and somewhat dated finish,
which had not been touched since the conversion in 1999. The aim of the project was to create a luxurious and
timeless pied- à-terre, using high quality fittings and
furnishings, including bespoke carpentry and furniture,
to provide the owner with a sanctuary from a demanding
business and travel schedule during their time in London. Firstly, we needed to improve the layout and fundamentals of the apartment. We began by removing one small
bedroom to extend the living area, creating a wonderful
open space with distinct kitchen, dining, living and study areas. All of the walls and flooring were removed and
replaced with dark oak flooring laid on top of a newly
constructed sub-floor, providing both a solid foundation and additional sound insulation. New windows were
installed together with two sets of custom-made French doors leading to the balcony. New wiring, lighting and

all of the doors in the apartment. Upon entering the
living area, you are first drawn to the study where the owner’s creative touch can again be seen in a walnut desk with leather inlay, bone handles and ebony line detailing. This has been made by an expert
cabinetmaker to the owner’s design, influenced
by art deco lines. An original Eames Lobby Chair, polished nickel desk lamp and select leather and glass desk accoutrements complement the desk.
Further bespoke carpentry was used in the living and dining areas for a long bookcase and wine storage that runs the length of the wall at waist height and
is topped with the same marble used in the kitchen
and bathrooms. The dining area sits adjacent to the

In the hallway and throughout the property a lightly
textured wall covering has been used, elements in the pattern are highlighted by the art deco inspired wall
lighting. Running along the entire left wall are a series of flush-fitted, full-height, touch-to-open doors, which conceal bespoke hanging and storage spaces. These
were custom built from walnut and give the impression of a complete wall, with the exterior door panels gloss-
coated in cream, which reflects the light and enhances the fresh feel of the space. Walnut is used again in a bespoke console table and matching mirror, which were custommade to the owner’s own design.

leather border was custom-made for the dimensions of the living room to perfectly balance the space and complement both the furniture and the dark oak flooring. For the living area a large sofa in
chocolate cashmere with matching suede cushions
sits perfectly with the rug, the square cocktail table
made from walnut with steel inserts and parchment top, a single ‘Grant’ armchair upholstered in a
supremely luxurious and comfortable camel velvet
and silk fabric, and two matching light brown suede ottomans with walnut plinths.

The kitchen area was hugely improved, both in style and function, with a new marble-topped island at its heart. The
same marble was used to top the Italian cabinets, which were finished in a gloss cream. A flush fitting Miele gas hob
with five cooking zones was installed in the marble top, together with a platinum finish water zone from Dornbracht. The kitchen design is intuitive with everything where it needs to be and follows a very clean and uncluttered profile.

From the living room and study area full-height double doors lead to the master bedroom This room was
carpeted with a deep wool and silk carpet in camel,
which provides a luxurious feel underfoot. A beautiful Ralph Lauren ‘Modern Hollywood’ bed made from

entirely built from walnut and conceals not only large bespoke wardrobes and drawers, but also a ‘secret’ door to the en-suite bathroom which benefits from
concealed LED lighting that highlights the marble and mosaic tiling, and finished with Dornbracht fittings. No expense was spared in the quality of the
craftsmanship employed in this project and the owner has been delighted with the finished product which worked to achieve a timeless luxury and satisfy the

Add several large cubes of ice to each of two Collins glasses. Top each with 1 ounce of the chilled espresso in each glass, followed by the French whisky. Splash a bit of club soda on top of each drink, then spoon the sweetened, thick cream over the mixture. Scrape a little fresh nutmeg over the top of each glass, and finish each with 4 drops of bitters. Serves two.
HOMEMADE WHIPPED CREAM Combine 1 pint of heavy whipping cream with 2 tablespoons of confectioner’s sugar. (To make Coffee Whipped Cream, add 1 tablespoon of powdered espresso coffee. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN DESIGNING?
I have been professionally designing since I was 18 years old. Meaning, it’s been my primary job and I’ve been getting paid to do it. This is basically all I do. I don’t know if that’s good or not good, it has just been my life. It’s a good life. There have been
so many role models along the way. These are the people that help you, that lift you, that open doors for you, they are your angels. I have had many of these influences and I try to be that for young designers as well. We forget how powerful we are to those coming up, and that we all came up with someone’s hand along the way.
WHAT WERE YOUR EARLY INSPIRATIONS AND/OR ROLE MODELS? Early inspiration…I was very graphic and provocative. I worked for Prince, MTV, I worked studios in Amsterdam, Barcelona, and NYC. Everything was and still is inspiring. Traveling and connecting with nature are my two biggest sources for creative fuel. Eyes need to be humbled at every age to see more, to be more.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE COMFORT FOOD DURING THE WINTER & HOLIDAY SEASONS?
Comfort food? Stuffing. I could eat stuffing anywhere, anytime, but that would make me a ball of bread. So I do refrain the rest of the year but come holiday time….I’m so in.
DO YOU LIKE ENTERTAINING OR ATTENDING PARTIES?
Both! As I write this I’m sitting in a hotel room in DC about to go to the White House holiday party….so I guess I like attending as much as I like throwing. Entertaining is
the delight of every caretaker and I’m a really big one for better or for worse. I love to
curate environments (duh) and invite everyone I love to come and be apart of them.

DURING THE COLDER SEASON, WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL ESCAPE THAT YOU LOOK FORWARD TO AT THE END OF EVERY DAY TO KEEP YOURSELF RECHARGED AND FRESH? It’s simple. I love to pick up my daughter from school, bring her home, and
cook with her for our friends, boyfriend, family, and simply talk about the day. This is one of my favourite parts of the day, the wind down through food and conversation…I guess I’m entertaining again.
IN YOUR CAREER’S JOURNEY, WHAT IS A COMMON CHALLENGE YOU FACE AND HOW IS IT OVER COME?
Ah, this is a big one. I’m a woman in a male construction world. Believe it or not, it’s still a pretty big issue. No matter how successful, how many years of
experience…I get met with constant doubt by the male building community. Am I real? Do I know anything? It’s like a prove yourself everyday at work kind of thing.
Does this get old? Terribly. Do I expect it every time? Yes. What do I do? I ask them if they’d like to have a good time during this job. When they say yes, I say well, we can do this one of two ways. I can drag you down the tunnel until the very end,
when I make you look like a rock star and you finally get it, or we can trust each
other and have a blast getting there. Either way, I’m going to make you look good it’s whether you choose to enjoy yourself along the way.
WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE OR MESSAGE YOU’D SEND TO PEOPLE LOOKING TO BECOME A DESIGNER, BASED ON YOUR EXPERIENCES AND INSIGHTS? Know the rules so that you can bend them.

WHAT’S THE MOST FULFILLING PART OF THE JOB AND MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT FROM YOUR FAVOURITE PIECES YOU DO? Through television being able to give people design who could never typically afford the services. People don’t think they “deserve” beautiful and when you bring it to this demographic….it’s magic. This is my food.
WE KNOW YOU HAVE A BEAUTIFUL FAMILY, AND WE DON’T MEAN TO PRY TOO PERSONALLY INTO YOUR LIFE. WE’D LOVE TO TAKE A MOMENT AND ASK HOW YOUR PERSONAL LIFE INFLUENCES WHAT YOU DO EVERYDAY? WHAT YOU HOPE YOUR CHILDREN CAN TAKE-AWAY FROM WHAT YOU DO? Thank you. My personal everything influences how I create, how I focus, and
what my process is. It’s my job to be a life sponge, to soak up all the ordinary and
extraordinary, and create inspiration, and beauty. It’s all relative from a trip on the bus to a bowl of soup or a journey to India…it isn’t just the fantasy life that makes good design. It’s when you figure out how to make fantasy feel functional and part of the everyday that there is brilliance. From my hometown to my ethnic roots to my role
as a mama, a girlfriend, and a daughter…everything I do and am becomes a part of
how I create. It’s an art, that’s how we roll. I want my daughter to see her mama alive, present, dancing in and with the world. I want her to see me working, living through
passion, and compassion that we use and live through every colour in the deck. I am happy and I think that is one of the most beautiful things to give to a child.
ON A POSITIVE END NOTE, WE’D LIKE IF YOU TOLD US ABOUT YOUR NEXT 5 OR 10 YEAR GOALS. YOU’RE VERY SUCCESSFUL AND BUSY TODAY, WHERE DO YOU SEE YOUR SELF TAKING THIS FURTHER OR SLOWING IT DOWN IN THE FUTURE? I’m not wired to slow down. I’m a do’er and I live very passionately. I feel
everything. The next 5-10 years I think will be some of my best…I plan to go
deeper into lifestyle and talk with television. Global home issues and stories will
start to become a larger platform for me. The product lines are growing bedding, accessories, textiles, and case goods are in the works. Online design content will continue to grow, I’d like to start producing and fostering new talent and create shows for our genre. A non profit is in the works to diversify and open up the
world of design to kids from all different backgrounds, who don’t have access.
This is so important to me. There are many more mountains to climb, I don’t plan at stopping on any summit.

For the remaining art work, LaCombe collaborated with a Los Angeles based company, Street Craft LA, which is a non profit organization, that teaches young artists to become entrepreneurs. “I loved being able to support
such a great cause, while providing incredible works of art for my client, all while staying on budget.” Says LaCombe With the build out of the conference room, nine

As a designer, I love to draw on my experience as a mother and as a grandmother when I am designing spaces for families. I am a major
proponent of a kitchen-centric open floor plan. Life happens in the kitchen. As mothers, we nurture our family and friends and that nurtures our souls.
embark | THE STYLISH LIVING MAGAZINE | 77
EMBARK WITH US The upside of the kitchen being open to the family
living room, dining room, and within eye shot of what I like to call the “parlor”, (that entry
space that makes a first
impression so we want to keep it neat) is obvious.
Birthday celebrations, Sunday football or Nascar parties
and everyday family dinners are so enjoyable when
there is space to entertain.
I find family play time in the common area of the open floor plan to be more fun,
too. Kids are within eye shot
and feel more included in the
family activities than when the toys and play are relegated
to the out of sight “playroom”. I think the the open floor
plan should be one big play room. The challenge to this is containing the messiness
and having enough storage. Storage ottomans, coffee tables with drawers and
plenty of built in cabinetry can be the answer.
Kitchens are the ultimate “built-ins”. A place for
everything. Using that
thought process for the rest
of this living space is the key
to containing the family mess
that happens when you have small children.

DITCH THE FRAME AND EMBRACE ARTWORK IN A NEW WAY WRITTEN BY ELENA MORGAN AND CANDACE ULLAL PRODUCED BY ELENA MORGAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY BLACKSTONE EDGE
The time has come to break away from wall-hung artwork and expand the canvas to your ceilings, windows, fireplaces, and furniture! Most
people are used to and comfortable with traditional forms of art that often times are displayed on the wall and in a frame, but those are
times of the past. Nowadays, the words “traditional art” are something that is becoming somewhat obsolete. Technological advances have
provided several new platforms for artists to explore new boundaries as a way of sharing their creativity with the world. Garrison Hullinger
Interior Design’s Associate Interior Designer, Candace Ullal is here to share three possible ways to ditch the canvas and bring unique, and exclusive artwork to your home!
86
| THE STYLISH LIVING MAGAZINE |
embark
EMBARK WITH US
CREATE A HUGE STATEMENT WITH YOUR ENTIRE WALL! Ullal recommends to “treat a large
un-used wall (interior or exterior) as the canvas for something beautiful! From floor-to-ceiling, and from end-to-end.” If you are feeling
bold and up for this task, create a
beautiful and textural wall with an inexpensive material that gives a
stunning “wow” effect that everyone craves! An easy and inexpensive
way to transform a regular wall is by
applying a rustic or reclaimed wood plank onto dry wall. The various colors, depth, and difference in
material create an alluring pattern
with a lot of horizontal movement. Drawing the eye closer and closer to inspect the imperfections and
fascinating levels of detail. All easily done through a local “re-build-it”
center or simply select a “vintage” like wood plank product.
TIP TO TRY: Add texture and depth to your wall by completely concealing dry wall by adding a rustic and reclaimed wood plank!

A COLLECTOR’S DREAM COME TRUE Hang up your favorite collections! Ullal urges you to “take those gorgeous plates, chargers, and handmade
cups and bolt them to your wall or ceiling to create a collection of intriguing shapes and forms along a focal
wall in a space.” One way to display your prized possessions in your space is to use colorful, glass plates and affix them to the wall producing a horizontally oriented artwork display. If you use clear glass plates, it allows you to have a whimsical play with shadows, translucency, and pattern! Ullal says that “a great DIY to try at
home is to is to personalize your space by taking grandma’s vintage porcelain plates and display their character on a subtly painted wall to make them be the highlight of any room.”
TIP TO TRY: Bolt your favorite items to the wall to create a collection of intriguing shapes and forms along a focal wall in a space.

TIP TO TRY: Create areas or collections of art to be displayed together. You can separate them by color or similar pieces of art!
92

THROW THE MEASUREMENTS OUT OF THE WINDOW! Do not be fooled! When it comes to displaying your art, Ullal insists on
“disregarding the standard sizes of 24” x
36” or 18” x 24” - the sky is the limit!” The scale of any piece can really transform a
space. Try creating areas or collections of art to be displayed together from small scale to large-scale sizes. Ullal continues on to
say that “the play on scale and saturation
of color will give any space an eclectic but non-clutter look!”
Ullal encourages you to continue to “seek
ways to get excited, shock your guests, and tickle the imagination, with thrilling pieces of art. She continues on to say that “you
cannot buy these, you can create these with these three simple steps.”
1.) Think contrast in scale. Large items to
contrast the smaller more traditional scaled pieces in your home.
2.) Don’t stick to comfortable, and everyday
vertical wall application, look at your ceiling, your flooring, your carpet, your doorway opening as a blank canvas and find a
surface that deserves something special! 3.) Be inspired and use what you have and what is already out there! Such as vintage
books, old boards, rope from the garage, any item can great an interesting piece
of art, or at least be an inspiration for the driving force that creates a piece of art.
Cheers to thinking outside of the frame and creating artwork that is thought provoking, and a worthwhile conversation starter!

Add water until it covers the vegetables by an inch. Bring to a boil over high heat, then lower the heat to a simmer. Cook, covered, until the squash is fork-tender. Drain and mash well, using a hand masher or an electric mixer. This can be coarse or smooth. Put in the refrigerator to chill. Beat the egg together with a tablespoon of water. Place the egg roll wrappers on the counter. Mix the squash filling together with half of the Secret Spice and salt and pepper to taste. Divide it into 6 equal parts. Brush a ¼-inch line of egg mixture around the border of each wrapper. Fold the wrapper point to point to make a triangle and press the edges to seal. Nudge the filling to distribute it a little, leaving a 3⁄4-inch border. At this point, the wontons can be refrigerated for up to 2 days. To cook, put 1 inch of oil into a heavy pan over medium-high heat (or use a deep fryer set to 350°F/177°C). Fry until golden brown (in batches if needed). Drain on paper towels. On a warm platter, arrange the tomato, cucumber and yogurt in small piles next to the wontons. Oil the scallops just to coat and place on the skillet. Let the first side brown well.
The scallops’ interiors should stay cool to the touch. Do not flip them. Just get that brown caramelization happening and remove from the heat. It should take 4 minutes or so. In a saucepan, warm the fumet to just short of boiling. Then remove the saucepan full of fumet from the heat and add the bamboo shoots and basil. Turn out this mixture into an Asian-style bowl. midst of a maddening city of
traffic and rudeness, pretension and egoism. The hotel is a throwback to the days of
manners and quiet moneyed

After enjoying our celebratory
dinner we all moved to the little bar for a quiet nightcap. There, was a rather proper English
gentleman who took quite an interest in me. We chatted for a few minutes, I gave him my
number and in the days ensuing he would call and we’d talk for
hours. In LA on business he was soon back off to London where
he continued to pursue me with calls, gifts and compliments.
After about a month of this he
asked me to visit and arranged a business class flight.
Now before moving on to the

my experience once I arrived at

him, what were we planning to do while I was there…Finally I proclaimed in indignation,
“Lady, you are worse than my mother!” She sent me on my
way without even the tiniest of an upturned lip.
I exited the terminal to my
handsome, distinguished host and his awaiting chauffeur
driven Rolls Royce who sped
us off to Grosvenor Square in
Mayfair. This was beginning to
feel like a fairy tale! There I was in the midst of Embassies and
brownstones of the titled. Yet no sooner had the fairy tale started had it begun to unravel.
As with any self-respecting
woman, before arriving I had made it clear that I would
expect my own room. After all, I
hardly knew this man regardless of our countless hours on the
phone and his fancy credentials. I was offered the quintessential cup of tea, shown my room
and instructed that the room by the kitchen was off limits.
What could possibly be beyond that door? His office? Photos
of his unmentioned girlfriend? Her belongings, methodically
hidden from view? Red flag #1. On the first evening my host
made plans for us to dine with
his close friends; a lovely couple I quite enjoyed. However my date, evidently not much of a drinker, had had a bit too
much wine and it fell on me to make our way back to Mayfair with little help in the way of directions. So there I was
driving on the ‘wrong’ side of
the street, in a city I didn’t know calling upon my experience
as a Location Scout to make it back in one piece. No sooner
had we made it up the stairs to the flat was I cornered on the
couch and practically mauled
by an overzealous suitor full of Bordeaux. Red flags #2 + 3. Deciding to excuse the
evening’s behavior as a

part, the next day we carried
on with our scheduled itinerary
around the city. A trip to eye the Crown Jewels in The Tower of London, a gander at Big Ben
and London Bridge, an open
double decker bus tour through the Financial District and so on. It was a fun day. After a quick respite back at the flat, we
moved on to a pub style dinner; a blur of comfort foods piled

the town’s most prestigious hotel, there remained an air of louche secrecy. The
crumbling boardwalk with its blue-collar touristy attractions left me once again
pondering the closed door passed the kitchen. While the Brits are known for
their fun and witty humor, my date was
own set of interesting circumstances. My first night alone I chose to treat myself to dining at a top restaurant. A pitfall of being a single woman, I was eyed
curiously by the maître d and directed

seemed to be begrudgingly provided.
It was reminiscent of my days in Boston

I loved the bright blue wall (which is
slightly muted in this terrible old iPhone photo). It felt feminine, really vibrant and
fun. I liked the artwork and photos on the wall and the shelves filled with all kinds
of books I’ve read over the years. Lately, however I have had the urge to rip it all down and start over - which I did.
My room was in complete disaster mode. I
actually boxed up nine boxes of books that I will be donating, Nine!
As you can see I have painted the
walls white. I am loving stark white and minimalistic design these days, Peter,
my husband, and I had been on a decluttering frenzy.

Anything we haven’t used
for the last year was being
sold or donated, including electronics, furniture etc. We’ve always enjoyed a clean home without too
much “stuff” and letting go of some of the excess just feels good for our souls!
Anyway white walls are my
thing now - but I don’t mind
a little pop of colour or some gold accents, which adds a little “glam” to the room.
White walls and minimal decor - is a difficult look to pull off
without making the room feel
unfinished. White interiors have also been a little trendy for a
while, so there is the chance I
will get sick of it - but I doubt it. On the plus side we will be
moving next summer so if I hate it, I only have to live with it for a year.
