nspiration for Calico came from ancient paper
marbling traditions. The duo employs handmade
cotton metallic pigments to create bespoke and marbleized wall coverings. These large scale
wallpapers are perfect for both commercial and
residential spaces. It adds intrigue, glamour and luxury to any space.
Calico Wallpaper’s latest collections are Aurora and Willow. Aurora was inspired by the duo’s recent travels to distant shores. “Nothing compares to
early morning light on the horizon”, says Rachel who
recently spent time in Italy. Rachel created Aurora by
hand-applying liquid suspension mineral pigments to organic linen, literally painting light onto her canvas. Using these impeccable original artworks, Nick then used a proprietary technology to prepare the canas for large-scale architectural purpose.

NEON RESURGENCE: GRODY TO THE MAX?
I
f you are a child of the 80’s then you might be getting anxiety from the influx of neon that is
reappearing all over the stores and runways right
GOGGLE PAESSANO PILLOW TEB INTERIORS $175
now. You are probably riddled with flashbacks from those days back in high school: Neon ‘Choose Life’ t-shirts and matching leg warmers accented with an
entire forearm covered in neon Jelly bracelets. Gag me with a spoon!
Full disclosure, here at teb Interiors we just adore this new wave of neon that has made its way back on the
scene. We think it’s like, totally awesome to the max.
We have used it in our furniture and pillow designs as well as incorporated it into the homes of some of our design client’s.
Today’s neon is a bit more sophisticated with the
subtlety in its application. Use it just as an accent like
the piping or racing stripes on a pillow or even switch out the cord of your favourite vintage light fixture.
How amazing would a couple of neon counter height Rochelle stools from Design Republic look sidled up to your island in an all-white kitchen? Like, totally radical, that’s how. Use neon sparingly and it will work great in almost any style of décor.
Maybe in ten years’ time we will all look back and
think “Oh god, remember when Neon came back?
What were we thinking?”, but for now, this designer thinks it’s like, totally tubular. — embark

he house was built in 1884 and was added onto over the years, some of it not in the most “graceful” of ways. When it was purchased in 1998 it was actually a triplex… 3 apartments, one on each level. The
renovation combined the lower 2 levels into our residence. The top unit, a 700 sq’ aptartment, with incredible views of San Francisco Bay, remained separate from the house and is the office for Urrutia Design. The house is one of the oldest homes in Sausalito and was built by a sea captain.

The fireplace and its location are original. The stone facade is new. It was a fairly funky brick fireplace
with a chimney from the 1940’s. The brick facade felt newer than that somehow… a bit contrived with a
strange varnish finish. Very odd. We ended up using
left over rock from a “lodge-like” project in Sausalito.
Somehow it fit well here. And no regrets at all. It looks the part, looks like it’s been here since 1884 and we use it constantly to create a great evening mood!

The kitchen is a bit of an odd and untraditional shape. But… we love our kitchen! There is a lot of space
between work areas but not quite large enough to have an island. It also doubles as a “hallway.” It’s the main thoroughfare to the lower level, also a bit unusual. Having said all of this, and being sticklers about good
design, we do love this imperfect kitchen! It’s great having a “different,” unique, funky kitchen, and one that works and feels comfortable to spend time. We also like how it splits the lines of classic and contemporary.
It’s simple in presentation with it’s subway tiles though the color of brown for a subway tile is unique. The black and white counter/cabinet colors, shaker cabinet doors, seltzer bottle pendant light are
very classic. But it also has contemporary design with its exposed range ducting, color of subway tile (“Sable” Brown), stainless appliances, etc. It’s great to straddle that line of classic, yet different. It’s
something that we always try to achieve in our design. Simple, classic, elegant… with a very subtle twist… without “trying to reinvent the wheel!”

Pearl Beach, this home was once an original 1950’s stilt cottage. It was our
task to reintroduce some of the 50’s character while making the home liveable
and comfortable for a family of six and their guests on vacation stays. The result is a home that sits comfortably within its 1950’s bones while giving a sophisticated, contemporary edge to a casual, comfortable beach retreat.

The clients wanted to restore their holiday home to its former midcentury glory - while remaining both contemporary and
comfortable. They wanted their family and guests to feel comfortable enough to put their feet up, while also being stylish enough to feel pampered. It was important to the client that the beach house be stylish without being pretentious. While
overall aesthetics were important - there were also practical factors at play. We were required to resolve the structural issues of internally connecting the upper and lower floors and maximising the floor space. Key to the success of this project was bringing the design and dĂŠcor back in step with both the original architecture as well as the natural surroundings.

The colour scheme was used to reflect the soft pastel tones of the 50’s and the natural hues of the
surrounding coastal landscape. Dulux ‘Grand Piano’ was used for all living spaces, giving a soft sand tone as a backdrop for the colourful collection of vintage and contemporary pieces.
A softer pale green, Dulux ‘Gentle Calm Quarter’ was used for the guest suite. Again, combined with a baton wall detail and layers of fabric and rug colours and textures, we created a casual, yet stylish retreat.

Key to the project was achieving balance between ‘casual luxury’. We accomplished this by combining heavy use of vintage items with injections of contemporary pieces in furniture, fabric and art. As with all BMID
projects, we seek the avoidance of ‘disposable’ furniture and artefacts, with a firm preference for investing in pieces ‘for life’. We do not like the short-term use of furniture that ends up as landfill, so we seek furnishings that will last even beyond the project for which they were procured.

estled behind the Houses of Parliament in the heart of Westminster sits an end of terrace Georgian property, which has been completely restored and extended by Shed Design. The five-story private residence was
flattened by a V2 rocket during WW2 and was painstakingly built to its original proportions after the war, therefore avoiding the Grade II listing award to several of its neighbours. An incongruous extension followed in the 1970s, but the arrangement of several small boxy rooms failed to make the best use of the 2600 sq.ft. space.

With outdoor space being such a rarity for a private residence in central London, the priority was to
reconfigure the internal layouts whilst maximising the external terrace footprint. The solution involved
demolishing the dated extension, levelling and excavating the basement, as well as sympathetically extending the ground floor, whilst keeping the house in line with the local style. The upper floors were rearranged to maximise every inch of space to create fully functional layouts for the family of four.
58
THE STYLISH LIVING MAGAZINE

As well as ensuring that the new layouts addressed the needs of the client, it also provided a framework for their daily routines. Shed worked sensitively to reinstate the original Georgian charm from the ground floor
upwards, designing a bespoke collection of architectural mouldings and doors to reflect the human proportions of the period. A rich, dark oak floor was installed, and the remainder of the elegant dĂŠcor was based around
this. A sanctuary away from the bustle of the surrounding city, each space has been individually designed and furnished, colours and materials tightly edited to ensure cohesion of design throughout the property.

The generous, free-flowing basement with kitchen, dining and media room has been designed as the heart of the home, a communal space for the very sociable family. Here, Georgian features have been replaced with modern details, marking the extension as part of the ‘New’. Daylight reaches the area through a large roof
light positioned over the marble dining table, which compliments the seamless off-white porcelain floor and the Serpeggiante marble worktop and splash-back in the monolithic kitchen.

The palette of deep blue with Portoro marble is a deliberate nod to the masculine side of the brief, and
it is very easy to picture retiring to this room of an evening either with friends or as a family unit. With the exception of this room, the colour palette for the property has been kept deliberately neutral, with the
designer using pops and splashes of brighter colours and warm tones, such as yellow accessories and lighting in the living area, to keep the atmosphere welcoming and homely. These personal touches also enhance the boutique hotel feel as prescribed in the brief by the client. Moving upwards through the building is made
possible via an elegant and lightweight stair with an English oak ribbon handrail, winding its way up to the bedroom accommodation.
THE STYLISH LIVING MAGAZINE

The stair is supported between brass stair rods on a timber ‘stringer’, with an offset stair runner encouraging
ascent or descent around the wide perimeter edge. The bedrooms comprise of an eclectic mixture of furniture and lighting, both antique and contemporary. Luxurious upholstery, silk floor-to-ceiling drapes and bespoke rugs have been carefully selected to sit comfortably next to rich timbers and marbles with brass accents. To
follow the brief, the bedrooms deliberately follow the boutique hotel formula, with side tables either side of oversized beds and reading lights featuring throughout.

Modern technology had been implemented subtly into the traditional design of the home; mechanical
ventilation supplies and extracts natural air constantly, maintaining fresh air throughout the winter months

rawing inspiration from her travels and a rigours
lifestyle, Sara Story has a keen eye and a great vision:
crisp, elegant, and comfortable gestures that thoughtfully
balance multiple elements of good design for an everyday, polished life. We were lucky enough to sit down with this
talented and beautiful lady and get to know her inspirations, thoughts and ideas on design.
Where does your story start? How did you become intro-
duced to design, what drove you further into it, and brought you to the path you would inevitably pursue as your career? My mother’s career in contemporary art certainly created, and was a driving force in my interest in design, architec-
ture and art. Starting from an early age, living abroad and
traveling peaked my interest in exploring different cultures, food, atmospheres and design. Knowing that design is my
passion, delving into a career of interior design and interior architecture made sense!
Where do you draw inspiration from? I draw inspiration from paintings and artists, from the colour palettes to expression in their works. Also, I am very in-
spired by textiles in Asia and India, and the history of their
crafts and methods. My travels to Thailand, Cambodia and
Japan are significant memories. Traveling to Vienna, Istan-
bul and Morocco are wonderful places to gain inspiration as well. The architecture and ornamentation are incredible as well as the marble and tile work.
My projects have a story and they unwind organically. I take all my experiences and influences to create an atmosphere
and design that is conducive to the project and program. As
a well respected and admired person, your excellence in de-
sign taste and creative direction have often been sought after by many. Do you find your self at times surrounded by bad
interiors that just make you want to tear down everything and fix it for them, how do you handle giving your advice?
I do analyze most spaces I find myself spending time in
and questioning some of the choices that were made. My
friends do comment that I am always analyzing interiors and materials in my surroundings.

What are the common mistakes you find today with new designers? I would advise not to follow trends but to find your own vision and be true to it. It is always interesting to
experiment and to take risks, this is design and you should try to push the envelope! Experimentation and confidence can help your design evolve and continue to grow.

What advice can you give home owners starting out with a project in their home? Owners need to be clear on their program and what they
need. Acknowledging your likes and dislikes is extremely important. Also, think about how you live and let that be the driving force.
What keeps you grounded and focused in this world? What’s your escape from the pressures you may feel in your daily professional career? My family keeps me grounded and escaping to the hill country of Texas is a perfect balance to New York City. While I love being in NY - its art, architecture and fast pace is a constant inspiration; however, escaping to
nature and being encompassed by its natural beauty is
perfection! I find the most beauty is in nature--- from the colours, marbles, trees, flowers and rocks.
What is your worst design experience? What was your best? Worst experience was buying an incredibly expensive
chandelier in Europe and finding out in Asia that it was covered in rust.
My best experiences are working with incredibly talented architects, painters, lighting designers. I enjoy learning
about my client, their passions and interests. Creating an environment for them is rewarding.
Who inspires you?
My parents inspire me. My father’s passion for traveling, his involvement in helping elephants in Asia, as well as,
preserving local traditions in crafts and textile designs of the Thai people. My mother’s love of art, design and life are enormous inspirations for me.
What is a professional rule that you never break? I don’t like rules! Rules are made to be broken.
Are there any design for causes, or charities that you’re involved with? Elephant preservation is a cause close to my family. www.the-elephant-story.com/pages/elephant-foundation — embark THE STYLISH LIVING MAGAZINE

BRING IN SOME SUMMER SUN BY YANIC SIMARD | PHOTOGRAPHY: BRANDON BARRÉ
Looking to freshen up your decor for summer? I’m shedding light ways to make this your best decor season ever. New Neutrals
Summer Brights
• Think that adding color is all about hot hues
• What better way to bring a ray of sunshine
and cool trends? Semi-neutrals are another way to
indoors than with a pop of summery yellow?
wake up a tired room.
It’s naturally the lightest and brightest hue, so just a
navy, taupey-grey and patina green (such as in the
little bit will go a long way. Toss a yellow cushion (or
antiqued mirrors) will create a rich palette when
another saturated hue like a sky blue) on your bed,
mixed together, as the undertones play against
sofa, or banquet for instant “happy” with no long
each other perfectly.
term commitment.
Grey especially is a popular contemporary choice
• A playful printed drapery treatment is another
because it feels clean and fresh, but can also be warm
excellent way to add color to walls without
and calming. Mix a few shades together in warmer
overloading. For a clean, modern treatment, hang
and cooler tones for playful sophistication, and be

sure to mix textures for that designer appeal. Look

lina Dasira Interior & lighting design studio completed the development of a colorful house for a young couple in a seaside village, located a few kilome-
ters away from the center of Chania, Crete. As the couple spends a lot of time
at home with family and friends, the brief called for a modern and comfortable
place. The idea was to create a different vibe in each room, inspired by the sea-
sons of the year. Each interior has a unique positive energy that comes from the vivid colors and natural materials employed.
The day begins in the 21 square-meter comfortable kitchen, modern and
fresh, shiny and ergonomic. The wallpaper leaves an open window to a spring breeze that gives a positive energy for the beginning of the day.
In the 40 square-meter dining and living room, inhabitants can enjoy natural materials and original ceiling lighting, all hinting towards an autumn theme.
The turquoise color of the bedroom wall, gives the relaxing sense of a swimming pool effect by reflecting in the rest of the room. — embark

he clients wanted a modern courtyard with an Asiatic influence that softened the home, provided privacy from the northern neighbours and with a high functional requirement such as outdoor fire bowl alfresco

The garden style is a modern, Asiatic influenced space with minimalist undertones. With key features of an
off axis circular water feature with floating steppers that the garden is built around. It was a bold move by the clients to go round as the other two initial concepts were a little more conventional as they were rectangular.
The water feature dissects all living zones of the courtyard and provides an asymmetric focal point to a central
space. The large alfresco deck and kitchen add functionality to the space and are conveniently located outside the main living hub of the home making it convenient and user friendly. The other zone is the fire bowl lounge area where a floating polished concrete bench provides storage for the fire wood, three random stone clad
piers add sculptural towers that also double as seats and loose chairs can be taken from the alfresco if larger numbers want to spend time around the fire. 102

What drew you to this career? As a child I always had a fondness for decorating.
I remember how much I liked to rake the shag car-
pet in the house and clean my room, accessorizing
with what ever I could find in the basement discards.
When I got older and had some money, I used to buy my Mother presents; a floor lamp, vases and other
tchotchkes, and would help her accessorize. I still do to this day.
It wasn’t until 2006 that my career changed and began in the interior decorating business.
How would you define your style? As Interior decorators we tend to gravitate and like
the same things when we are working on a project. I guess this is what kind of brands us in our style of
work, but I think it really is just about what we like and making a statement about it. Sure its good to change
things up, but somehow these ideas are just natural to
me and they are not necessarily ground breaking. Just effective. My brand is really about you, as I decorate and style for your home, not mine.
What is the most important elements to a great designed space? Scale. This goes for so many elements when decorating a room and home; furniture, fabrics, wallpaper,
drapery hardware, the list goes on. Even paint colour can enhance the scale of the room. Sometimes you
have to break the rules and go outside of yours and
the client’s comfort zone, which will make an amazing statement. Going “big” in a confined room or space can be very expressive and bold.
What are the biggest decorating mistakes we make in our homes ? Not hiring a decorator! There are so many things
that homeowners don’t see or think about when they decorate on their own: positioning of light sources, the scale and height of furniture in relation to other
pieces of furniture in the room, colour coordination and relying on safe colours to name a few.

What elements do you love to work with? I love to work with fabrics; their colour, pattern, scale and the tactile quality that they bring as it is a tangible measure.
How do you approach each project? I really listen to what my client is saying when we meet for the first time. I observe their entire sur-
roundings and try to understand how they live. I ask a lot of questions and then take a moment to digest the information, and then start providing them with some ideas. Every client has a unique lifestyle and personality. My design approach is always to enhance their lifestyles and spaces that reflect their own unique story.
Can you share your fav styling tip? I love working with wallpaper and the textures it
provides to a space. I especially like to use it on the
ceiling. It can bring added reflection and luminosity to the room or something bold and un expected to find when you look up.
In your career you have worked on diverse residential projects in Toronto Canada. What do you enjoy working on the most?
Living spaces are such an important part of the home. It is the place where you can relax, entertain, catch up
on your reading, or even watch the latest and greatest TV shows. The same goes for a bedroom. After a
long day of work, its is where one can retreat, to a
bed made with luxurious cotton sheets and cozy bed linens, letting your thoughts drift off dreamily.
What are you looking forward to working on ahead? I would really like to expand my media presence and
be more involved with TV opportunities I am currently reviewing a variety of options in this area. Our firm is finalizing the designs on a uptown residential project in Toronto and working and will be working on more condo projects in 2015‌‌..

Why is it important to have a well designed space and to work with someone like yourself? A well designed or decorated home says a lot about you. It’s no different than how you dress yourself and how you want to project yourself in the business world
and personally. Your home needs to have the same care. This is an extension of your personality is exemplified through out your home in everything thing you
choose; from your colour scheme to your furniture and lighting, even right down
to your hand towels and the soap. I am your guide to making this a reality. My firm
is based on building relationships and embodies the structure of a business, while fostering creative and original ideas generated together with the client.
Here are a few of my favourite decorating guidelines TEXTURES
Mixing the textures of your fabrics provides an instant change to your perception and tactile experience in your home. UNEXPECTED ITEM
Placing an ultra modern piece of furniture in a traditional setting or vice versa. I love juxtaposition. Another way that I like to bring something alternative to a
space is adding a single coloured accessory to give the room that unpredictable balance to a perfect room.
RULES ARE MEANT TO BE BROKEN….
But one that I cannot break is keeping your chandelier 30-36” above the top of your dining surface. Otherwise you will have a light fixture that will be floating away or swimming in your soup tureen. ARTWORK
If your walls are white then you definitely need artwork. Art doesn’t have to be to scale to the furniture or room. It just needs to have a point of view. LAYERING
An interesting room has many layers of accessories; pillows, throws, pictures,
artwork, vessels, books, and lighting. A sofa without any pillows is like a wearing
suit without the shirt, tie, belt, shoes, pocket square, cuff links, watch, cologne…..I think you get the idea. BOOKCASES
These grand pieces of furniture need to be filled with books and curiosities, with perhaps some framed family pictures. A well-curated bookcase can tell a myriad of stories about you and your family. — embark

A
new start in a new place is a big step. It requires thoughtfulness and the courage to go boldly, much like creating an interior design. This space is part of the first “big girl” home of a young woman attending college. I wanted to give it a chic feeling
kitchen and bath that added light and sparkle without feeling too girlie. I wanted to create a simple environment with a warm
contemporary feeling that left room for her spirit to grow. The organic grey, beige and orange tones work well with the wood
floor and stone counter to create that feeling of comfort that she was looking for. The backsplash and island pendant have a chic
sophistication about them. I always start with the kitchen because to my foodie clients and I, it truly is that cliché “heart of the home” The custom cabinets were actually built by a local closet company. This can be a great solution for custom cabinets on a budget and allowed for some splurging on the lighting and backsplash tile. The simple white cabinetry and tile in the bathroom are
complimented by an accent in the same organic grey, beige warm tones in the kitchen to create an overall feeling of continuity. — embark

MORE THAN A DOOR.
A new collection of unique and imaginative interior doors for 2015 are now available from ScanWest Interior Doors Three of the five new designs have been developed
under the company’s recently launched Interactive Design
Program (IDP) which offers independent artisans, designers, and material suppliers a vested interest in the overall
success of the product. The resulting doors become a
new creative form for them… a new canvas. The company recognises the difficult barriers to market entry that face aspiring artists and independent designers. Under IDP, ScanWest is creating an in-house design community
based on a collaborative process between the company,
artists, and technology. “We place people at the forefront,
creating transparency behind the designs, showcasing their skills, and telling their unique stories”, said Christopher W.
Hampton-Davies, President of ScanWest Interior Doors “We are continually inspired by and are drawn to the passion of hand-craftsmanship, creativity, and artistic endeavour.”
ScanWest is a Toronto-Montreal design firm, established in 2011, focusing on contemporary interior door design and development. The company combines traditional
design techniques with technological trends, and integrates innovative materials to create distinctive doors. At their
core is the emphasis on playfulness, simplicity, a presence in today’s time - but most importantly, an emotional connection with the design.
The new 2015 collection is manufactured in Ontario and
Quebec, offering custom colours and a variety of lacquer finishes. In keeping with the company’s innovativeness, ScanWest provides an option of a special lightweight
concrete surface, creating a truly stunning modern product. — embark SCANWEST INTERIOR DOORS IS A TORONTO-MONTREAL DESIGN FIRM, ESTABLISHED IN 2011, WITH A NEW TORONTO, ON. CANADA WORKROOM & SHOWROOM OPENING SOON . WWW.SCANWESTDOORS.COM

DESIGN PLANNING WITH MELISSA DAVIS
I
’m in the business of creating well-executed spaces I am a designer. I’m going to let you in on a little
secret, I’m actually just a problem solver. My brain
is not that of a lateral thinker jumping from creative
possibility to creative possibility. I’m a linear thinker. I see a problem, sequence through the possible
solutions and form a plan for the most succinct and
effective way to execute on that solution. I believe in
the possibility of infinite possibilities and I’m very very good at plucking out one such possible solution and committing to it. 134
THE STYLISH LIVING MAGAZINE
When someone decides to hire a designer it’s an
exercise in acknowledging that some aspect of how and where they live is not working. Clients come
in many forms some with binders divided by area and stuffed filled with “inspiration” ideas. Others simple show up and say “We need more space”.
I’ve studied design and spent my youth in fine arts programs, and my college years mixing paint at
the local décor shop. I know how to create visual
balance and harmony, but, good “eye” is not what makes me good at my job.
EMBARK WITH US
As a designer you need to be a good listener . I
listen to my client’s words, but more than that I watch their nonverbal cues. I gauge how they subtlety
or not so subtly react to each other’s comments.
Designers need to understand how you live and I
tour how my clients live now and mentally note the
things they aren’t telling me. “We need more space” may actually mean “when my husband gets up for
work at 5AM he wakes me up getting clothes from the
dresser by my head. I’m tired and grumpy as a result.” So, they don’t need more space. They just need a secondary dressing area that allows one to sleep while the other prepares. Problem and solution.
Working with a designer means allowing someone
into your lives who will listen to your wish list. Letting in someone who knows how to solve everyday
problems through the reworking and improving of
your physical environment. They save ultimately time and money and they bring you a rolodex of trusted
trades and suppliers who have helped them and help
other homeowners like you before. They are one part of a team that will become your team if you think they are a good fit with your life.
Your designer will become your voice during the renovation process.
They will shelter you from the daily calls and site
queries that inevitably come up. They will work with
the team seemingly silently but continuously until the renovation is complete. For every problem they will offer viable solutions, which they already taken the
time to consider, allowing you opportunity to make an educated choice, not an emotional one to move forward.
You’ll laugh, the indescribable amount of drywall
dust may make you cry, but in the end as you settle back into your new home, I promise it will be with a renewed peace, fewer problems at hand, and a new “creative” friend to toast your combined accomplishment with. — embark

ver wish you could buy an island and escape from it all? How about owning an exotic villa on a tropical island? Well maybe those aren’t realities unless you
also own an airline but you can have the experience for a week in Koh Samui, the third largest island in Thailand. Samujana, an enclave of 25 luxury hillside villas, are available not only for sale but also for rent. So even if you can’t cough up
an extra $2-5,000,000, you can live the high life by renting a slice of it. Imagine
lounging in your own personal infinity edge pool with an unobstructed sea view or walking to the stunning beaches of Choeng Mon and popular Chaweng . All
while surrounded by the design of Asia’s celebrated Gary Fell of GFAB Architects. There’s even a property with five en- suite bedrooms, a state-of-the-art cinema
and a private gym. Want a rain shower, a full service bar and rooftop BBQ deck to host your rock star dream get-away? How about having a team of dedicated attendants looking after you during your stay. Then this is the place.

First opened only 3 years ago, Samajana was built with the idea of preserving the incredible beauty of its surrounds by building the villas around the
nature encountered. Thus, several villas have mature trees and rock formations incorporated right into the living areas, gardens or the pools. The design itself offers clean lines and modern style.
Activities are plenty in Koh Samui, which is also home to the Angthong National Marine Park. You could spend an entire day exploring the archipelago of 40
protected islands and limestone cliffs. Prefer to ride an elephant? Trek through lush jungle and head to the scenic waterfall Nam Tok Na Muang, the tallest
on Samui and located in the center of the island. No trip of course would be
complete without visiting the island’s grandest sight, The ‘Big Budda’. Whether you decide to just simply decompress from the ‘real’ world or venture off to explore, this is one destination that’s worth putting on your bucket list. — embark
