Materials/Resources Needed Smart Board, essay sample, jump-drive, computer, pen and paper
Time 3-5 minutes
Anticipatory Set Find out what level students are at in essay writing by asking questions. Explain how essaysare an essential part of school and how important it is in post secondary school. Relate to real life , such as College, University papers, applying for scholarships, speeches, projects etc.
Teaching Cues Have students remove distractions such as cell phones and non English class related material. “Eyes up front please.”
Include YouTube clip of How to write an effective essay

Objective/Purpose Explain to the students, that by the end of the lesson they will understand how to write an effective essay. This skill will aid in the future to write insightful, powerful and intelligent papers.
Input & Model Show students on Smart Board an example of one of your essaysyou brought on a jump-drive on the computer (written at about a grade 9 level). Explain the “hamburger” illusion that essay’s have an intro, the top bun, a 3 part body, lettuce, hamburger patty and tomato, and a conclusion, the bottom bun. Read the essay out loud with your students. Explain what a thesis statement is, its importance and where is belongs. Explain that insights and using good vocabulary in important in essay writing. Explain 3 body paragraphs in essay. Model a brief essay template on smart board. Have students help you make an intro, thesis statement, body paragraphs which include topic sentences, transition sentences, insights and a conclusion.

On the smart board, brain storm essay topic ideas in web form. Make sure students pick an appropriate topic to write their essay about; such as the short story they’ve read in class. Give examples of themes they could choosesuch as courage, self-motivation, self-identity, perseverance, independence etc.
“Has everyone chosen a topic or main idea to write about?” “Here, let me help you with your potential thesis statement.”
Circulate classroom, student by student to view progress and be available to help whenever needed. Time 5-10 minutes
Independent Practice Assign an essay assignment to the class. It must be based on the short story read and analysed in class. The essay must be typed on the computer, double spaced in Microsoft Word.
(Tech related)
Students may use the web to research the short story for information only. No copying. Firmly explain copyright laws and the strict consequencesof copyrighting. Time
Closure
3-6 minutes
Review key materials learned today in class. Hamburger. Thesis. Essaybody paragraphs etc.
Double check that students understand how to write an effective essay. Ensure students that this assignment is not a one day thing. We will be working on writing and editing this essay in class. Assessment/Evaluation/ Comments

Ensure to get students excited about writing! Essay writing should be fun as well as educational and an organizational tool to shape thoughts, insights and information.
