carriage way will be completely closed with a 40 mph contraflow on the other side which will inevitably cause delays and congestion at peak periods. With little choice of alternative routes, it’s recommended that commuters alter their start and finish times to avoid the congestion. No doubt in the next issue we will have “Tales from the A338!” Yet another summer of successful Chamber events has flown by. The Barons Of Beef event at the Cumberland Hotel was very well attended; the “Beef in Yorkshire” was really out of the County! The Presidents Cocktail Club, held at Southbourne’s Cliff House Hotel, where great weather combined with great company ensured that this event went with a twist! The guys behind the bar producing superb cocktails with just a little bit of panache. Both events were a superb way to mix business with pleasure, Bournemouth style. As the summer breeze fades in our memories, and autumnal winds herald the onset of winter, I don’t feel too bad mentioning the Chamber’s Christmas Event our “Masquerade Ball” to be held at the Marsham Court Hotel on the 10th December. It will inevitably be a sell out so please book early to be part of something special. We continue to work on our four principal objectives for this year. The Website Team have now scrutinised and interviewed our potential providers; no easy task as the competition was tough. The Chamber has awarded the contract to design, construct and manage the new BCTC website to Rubix Digital. They will have already
started work with the aim to have the bulk of the work finished by the end of 2015, with a launch in 2016. Later in the autumn we will announce exactly what functionality will be delivered by the new platform.
By the time you read this the summer holidays will have flown by, and also the Bournemouth Air Festival. I look forward to meeting you at forthcoming Chamber events including Banter at The Miramar, Beales Breakfast or BH on the go!

The Town Centre Business Forum is well underway with the foundations laid. In early autumn we will hold the first meeting of town centre businesses under our banner. There are already over 200 chamber members based in the town centre. I hope that many will join the forum to help shape our town’s future, enhancing it as a better place in which to do business. Only a short walk from the Centre is pier approach which offers a fine example of how our interaction with the council has created a better environment for all. It’s a brilliant start to returning the whole coastline to “world class” status. Whilst there, do take the opportunity to visit the new Penguin facility at the Oceanarium Penguins in Bournemouth…..YES! Finally may I remind all fellow “A338ers”, that the 8km stretch of the spur road between Ashley Heath and the Blackwater Junction will be severely disrupted from the 6th September 2015 to the end of May 2016. “Many teenagers and young adults need support outside of their treatment and we give them something to look forward to. We receive an incredible amount of positive feedback about the peer support holidays we provide for young people living with and beyond cancer. These therapeutic breaks not only improve well-being, but also give youngsters the chance to restore and re-build confidence, try new activities and make new friends. Siblings or friends who can come as companions also get the chance to share their experience of supporting a loved one with cancer whilst gaining support from others going through a similar experience.” Says Brenda Clark, Founder. The Trust was founded in 1997 and has supported thousands of young cancer patients over the years. It was formed by Brenda Clark, who lost her only daughter, Tracy Ann, to cancer when Tracy was 21. During Tracy’s illness there was nowhere she could go to be with other young people who had cancer. After Tracy passed away, Brenda was determined that no other young person with cancer should feel isolated and thus set up the Youth Cancer Trust.
“We currently have room for 250 young people, along with their siblings, each year but are very oversubscribed, especially during the school holidays. Before the recession we launched an appeal to raise funds to buy a larger property with more in-house amenities, so we never have to turn away a young person due to lack of space. Unfortunately our general donations decreased during the recession, as people had to tighten their purse strings so we have had to focus on our core services over the last few years.”
The Trust is hosting a White Christmas Ball on Saturday 5th December at the Pavilion Ballroom in Bournemouth. Tickets are £50 each or you can purchase a table of 10 for £450. To purchase tickets, visit the events section of the website: youthcancertrust.org or contact: derek@yct.org.uk.
The Trust has recently re-branded to ‘Youth Cancer Trust forward’ to launch them in to a new and exciting phase of their evolution and is re-launching the appeal to buy a new property and asks the local community if it can please help by either donating via their website: youthcancertrust.org or by running their own local fundraising event. “Running an event is not only helpful in raising funds for the Trust but by also raising awareness of adolescent cancer.” Says Brenda.

"The difference in the light quality of just four of the panels immediately blew me away. I was also impressed with the ease we were able to fit them. I was certainly convinced to invest in the rest. did, but again it was hard to know just how much more light these modern LEDs emit and I could have got away with less resulting in an even faster payback.”
A patron and sponsor of the award-winning Bournemouth Air Festival, the 4-star Bournemouth Highcliff Marriott Hotel is proud to have been involved since the Festival’s beginning. As Hugh Hodgins, General Manager of the Bournemouth Highcliff Marriott comments; “Bournemouth Air Festival is an outstanding and prestigious event that is eagerly anticipated by the town, our guests and our Associates. Owner of Led-Zip Lighting, Nick Bainton, is a customer of the branch and felt he could not only improve the quality of light, and therefore the customer experience in the showroom – but also the cost of running such a large floor space. Leaving his business card and an invitation to visit their showroom, the message reached Managing Director Glenn Mason.
“The difference in the light quality of just four of the panels immediately blew me away,” said Glenn. “I was also impressed with the ease we were able to fit them. I was certainly convinced to invest in the rest, and calculated a payback period of some 22 months, which Nick steered me closer towards 24/25 months. It is clear the company is about facts not frills, and in fact it was suggested I purchase less modules than I
Although Glenn researched online options, in the end he felt that such an insignificant cost differential was far outweighed by the peace of mind of being to see - and talk through what he was buying. “The added benefit is a 50% increase in light levels in the store and therefore more clearly displayed products for the customer,” added Nick of Led-Zip Lighting. “And I understand the showroom team are delighted with the results too. Motabitz will benefit from a five year warranty on these products and at least 50,000 hours of use with no more than 20% degradation over that time-scale.”
The cost of lighting the showroom for year to March 2015 was £4,655.00, a figure any retailer would be pleased to reduce. “Following Led-Zip Lighting’s recommendation to consider LEDs I did some research online, although nothing beat visiting the Led-Zip Lighting showroom, seeing the products themselves and talking to an expert,” said Glenn.

The result was a trial of four 600mm x 600mm slim panel lights that slot directly in as a replacement ceiling tile. “Glenn really needed to see the lights in situ to experience the difference, so I suggested he take a box to try, said Nick Bainton of Led-Zip Lighting.”

Saffery Champness host Summer Budget Breakfast Seminar
Pest control for businesses? We can help you cut costs.
Saffery Champness Chartered Accountants hosted their annual post budget breakfast seminar and were delighted to welcome over 100 guests representing businesses and the professional communities of Bournemouth and Poole.
Jan Weekes Managing Director of Marley House Nursing Home added, “It has been good to clarify key budget facts and how they will affect our business. The minimum wage increase will impact hugely in the care sector which is slightly worrying for us.”
Saffery Partner Nick Fernyhough opened the event and confirmed that this had been the first Conservative Budget for 19 years. He gave an informative talk and described the Budget as having content that encompassed ideas from across the political spectrum.
Nick advised, “There are few clear winners in this Budget but increases in the minimum wage will please many. However, the inflationary impact of these changes will represent a major concern for businesses in sectors where pay is traditionally low.
Jan Weekes Managing Director of Marley House Nursing Home added, “It has been good to clarify key budget facts and how they will affect our business. The minimum wage increase will impact hugely in the care sector which is slightly worrying for us.”
“The economy will generally welcome the lighter touch on spending cuts but business owners will be concerned about the increases in tax on dividends.”
Roger Parsons, a retired investor added, “It’s been a complicated budget but today’s event has been excellent and very explicit.”
We offer tailored packages specifically for businesses to help you plan your costs and keep on top of any previous problems with preventative action and a friendly, proactive approach.
Following on from Nick, Partner Alex Simmons and Director David Chismon gave detailed insight in to the impact of changes to the personal tax allowances, dividend tax allowances, business taxation, inheritance tax, pensions and nondomiciled individuals’ taxation. Questions from the floor followed. Peter Moody, Director of Coleman Insurance Brokers attended the seminar and commented, “Saffery Champness are really on the ball, analysing and presenting the facts so succinctly.”

Five Minutes with... George Clarke We caught up with architect turned TV presenter George Clarke for a whistle stop chat about inspiration, TV work, and ideal home shows.
What inspired you to become an architect? I used to love drawing, my dad used to sketch and draw an awful lot. He wasn't trained, but he enjoyed it. My granddad was a builder and when I was 9, 10, 11 years old, I would spend a lot of my school holidays on building sites when he was there. I love the building game, I love seeing things being constructed and standing there for many years.
"She called me up a few days later and asked me if I'd be interested in telly. It took her a couple of days to persuade me. Even after I got offered the job, I didn't know if I wanted to do it. But I took the plunge and the rest is history really." How did the TV work come about? I had no ambition to be on TV at all. I was lecturing at the time at a number of universities, I had my practice and I was asked to write a book on architecture so I got a literary agent. She called me up a few days later and asked me if I'd be interested in telly. It took her a couple of days to persuade me. Even after I got offered the job, I didn't know if I wanted to do it. But I took the plunge and the rest is history really. You must have met some amazing people and been involved with some incredible projects because of it For me, architecture and building isn't a job, it's like a hobby, a genuine, real passion. You just have to look at people like Jamie Oliver, he's a brilliant TV presenter, but first and foremost he just loves being a chef. If his media empire ended tomorrow, he would still just love his job being a chef, and I'm the same really. To be able to travel all over the country - in fact all over the world with Amazing Spaces, I've been to Texas, Italy and we're just about to go to Germany this
year - and travel and see buildings and talk about them and be paid for it is just ridiculous really. I love it.
"For me, architecture and building isn't a job, it's like a hobby, a genuine, real passion. You just have to look at people like Jamie Oliver, he's a brilliant TV presenter, but first and foremost he just loves being a chef. If his media empire ended tomorrow, he would still just love his job being a chef, and I'm the same really." You were at Olympia for the Ideal Home Show - it's the ďŹ rst time it's been there for a while, isn't it? It's a nice coming home story. Personally, I felt quite proud of being part of Ideal Home Show at Earl's Court. It's been so inextricably linked to Earl's Court for the past 50 or 60 years, so for me to have been ambassador there for the past four or five years was fantastic. But Olympia is a great building.
"Make sure you've got lots of big, strong muscles in your arms because you will walk out with lots of bags! I'm not even joking, you will get gift bags, goodie bags, things you've bought... I shouldn't say it's a tiring day, but it's an exciting day."
What do you get up to? I think it's a case of what did I not get up to, to be honest! The main things of course are obviously the home village, which is a massive, massive part of the show. And I also did my seminar programme, doing lots of talks. And we had a Q&A when I'm on stage as well, which was really good. And just generally being an ambassador for the whole event. What tips do you have for ďŹ rst-time visitors? Make sure you've got lots of big, strong muscles in your arms because you will walk out with lots of bags! I'm not even joking, you will get gift bags, goodie bags, things you've bought... I shouldn't say it's a tiring day, but it's an exciting day. If you come first thing in the morning, you won't leave until 5pm, and you'll feel as if you've been on a good, exciting assault course by the end of it.
" When I was 17 or 18, my uncle worked for a garage door company, and I went down with him in his car to help set their stall up, but never in my wildest dreams did I think that I would be in the position I am today." Is being involved in something like this a dream come true for you? I would say it is a dream come true, yes. It's interesting that you said that because my connection with the Ideal Home Show actually goes back quite a long way. When I was 17 or 18, my uncle worked for a garage door company, and I went down with him in his car to help set their stall up, but never in my wildest dreams did I think that I would be in the position I am today. What else have you got coming up? I'm making series six and seven of Restoration Man; series six will be out later this year. Amazing
" Shed Of The Year was a national competition, that's coming back. It was an incredible success last year. We did that as a bit of fun, just three one-hour programmes, and it went mad. I'm also making another series with a working title of Ugly House To Lovely House, and the idea is that I take quite ugly post-war houses and make them look lovely again." Spaces series five this year, which will be out maybe in September. Shed Of The Year was a national competition, that's coming back. It was an incredible success last year. We did that as a bit of fun, just three one-hour programmes, and it went mad. I'm also making another series with a working title of Ugly House To Lovely House, and the idea is that I take quite ugly post-war houses and make them look lovely again. We do have some beautiful houses in Britain, but we do have some pretty ugly ones as well, and I always think that every house has the potential to be amazing. So I'm very busy. If your job is your hobby though, being busy isn't a problem Absolutely – I'd be bored senseless otherwise! I'm happy to keep making lots of programmes as long as people keep watching them.

Talking business with Mark Liddle Mark Liddle Partnership
Food Review: Jalarra Cafe, Bar & Life Music There’s no two ways about it; there is a new place in town that on a Sunday is a wind down, stress free environment – with a laid back jazz vibe.
[...] the one reason why a business makes money is the same reason why a business looses money - focus. What has been your greatest achievement within your career to date? My greatest achievement was back in the early 90’s when I was instructed to do a buy out from a major PLC where my client was prepared to buy the company for £2 million and the PLC wanted £4 million for it. I managed to buy the company for 300k!
How did your business begin? I’ve been sorting out problems in companies for over 35 years. I set this company up in 2010 when I took on board two senior managers who between them have over 30 years experience in working in the insolvency world. Why did you choose to set up a company to help other businesses? As mentioned earlier, I’ve over 35 years experience in the corporate world. I wanted to help businesses with the experiences I’ve seen and help them survive and make money. Have you always been involved in this line of work? Yes, I’ve always been involved in sorting our corporate problems. How have you seen the company develop since first beginning? The company has developed considerably as more and more people understand the totally unique service we offer to companies who are struggling financially. Our job is to help directors/ business owners and show them how to make money. Simple as that!
Are their any particular changes in the economy that have affected your business? No, there are no changes in the economy apart from an increase in work. Why do you believe you are the person to approach if your business is on the brink of failure? Because of our considerable experience in helping companies survive and helping to change the thinking of directors to ensure they realise the prime reason for being in business is to make money. The buzz we get is helping companies survive, not just to close them down.
What one piece of advice would you give to those with businesses that are potentially on the brink? The one piece of advice I give to businesses struggling is: the one reason why a business makes money is the same reason why a business looses money - focus. Go into business and focus on your skill only, you’ll never make money, it’s never happened in the history of mankind. Go into business and focus on making profit and you’re skill is secondary, you’ll make money. That is the simple truth.
Where do you hope to take the company in the future? Just want to grow the practice as we all love the work we do. Want to help more and more companies grow and make money. Do you have any specific goals you wish to achieve? I want to help companies make money and I want to get the most powerful, most amazing lesson I’ve ever learnt and ever will learn out into the business world: “If you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right”.

Jalarra is a relatively new Café Bar and Live Music Venue located in Poole Hill opposite Koh Thai restaurant. Having only opened in April it’s already seeing a steady increase in popularity especially on Live Music Nights. Food and an extensive drinks selection is offered all day.
We were invited to try the ‘Tansy Brunch: The Black & Blue One’ – this is a menu specifically for Sunday lunch and is accompanied by a live low key, laid back jazz vibe. Music was provided by the very talented Harry Skinner and David Marchant, amongst a setting of eye-catching industrial décor. The menu offered on a Sunday is mainly vegetarian, but the all-important bacon for meat lovers can be added should you so wish! My companion chose Hueveros Rancheros – which is a crisp corn tortilla topped with black beans, poached eggs, salsa and melted cheese – served with fresh fruit salsa and avocado. I opted for the Green Eggs and Jam – which is a generous slice of sourdough toast topped with poached eggs, mushrooms (probably the best mushrooms I’ve ever tasted!), vine tomatoes, halloumi and served with a side of chilli jam. Both dishes were of a very generous portion and looked great on the plate – certainly enough for those with a healthy appetite. However, we were also tempted into ordering a side dish of Brioche with chips, Marmite and slaw – which
was gorgeous! A lovely combination and perfect as a side or as a quick snack. I personally absolutely loved my dish, it was very well presented with a great array of colours, tastes and a generous portion. My companion enjoyed her meal and vowed to return the following Sunday to try something different. Given it was a Sunday morning we also felt excused to have a “pick-me-up” Bloody Mary Cocktail - if you like it spicy, then you’ll love this. It’s certainly got a kick to get you going on a Sunday morning! If you’re looking for something a bit different and away from the Sunday Roast then you have to try Jalarra – it’s a million miles away from the traditional meat and two veg, and that’s why everyone should try it. You won’t regret it. Jalarra Cafe and Bar 45 Poole Hill,, The Triangle Bournemouth, BH2 5PW 01202 556113

BCTC were proud to support Start Up Britain as they visited Bournemouth on the 21st of July 2015 as part of their UK tour.
notoriously difficult areas with widely reported talent and skills shortages. For Jacqueline this adds to the enjoyment and excitement of working in recruitment, “Businesses work with us because they know it makes sense. Trying to get the right people in place on your own can be costly, both in terms of time and money. When you are resourcing from a limited pool of candidates, you need professional expertise to help you land the right calibre of applicant.” Well-known faces on the Dorset and Hampshire networking circuit, Jacqueline and her team are confident that getting to know people is of paramount importance, and really impacts on their continued business growth and success.
Peter Matthews – BCTC-President, Mark Gracey & Sam Everard – BCTC-Executives, Matt-Smith-Start Up Britain Director, Chris Kelu – Bournemouth Council
Together with Start Up Britain, Bournemouth Chamber of Trade and Commerce provided support and inspiration to aspiring and early stage entrepreneurs all from the back of the “Start Up Britain On Tour” bus. As part of their work supporting local businesses and inspiring entrepreneurs in Bournemouth, BCTC constantly look for ways to help boost the number of start-ups in the area. Start Up Britain similarly aim to harness the expertise and passion of Britain's leading business people to celebrate, inspire and accelerate enterprise in the UK. Throughout the day, Bournemouth entrepreneurs were provided with a wealth of information and helpful guidance on starting and running a business. Experts provided advice on finance, accounting as well as general business tips. Give-aways, start-up packs and goodie bags were all available to those that attended. The experts also held 15 minute workshops for small
groups of 15; providing personalised advice on marketing and PR, developing business ideas and accessing finance.
President of Bournemouth Chamber of Trade and Commerce, Peter Matthews, who along with his colleagues took part in the day, has commented:
Representatives from the sponsor companies of Start Up Britain On Tour were also on hand during the day to impart their knowledge and advise entrepreneurs. “These are exciting times” – the opening words from our interview with Jacqueline Entwistle, MD of the newly re-branded Real Recruitment Solutions. The company may have changed name – from the former Quantum Recruitment, but there is no change in the energy, drive and commitment to providing something very special and different to their clients and candidates.
"[...] but more than that – it’s our commitment to forging and maintaining professional relationships with all of our clients."
The re-brand has come about following Jacqueline’s buyout of her former silent business partner, leaving her solely at the helm. Established in 2010, initially to service the staffing requirements for the Quantum Group, the business soon expanded to become a specialist consultancy in the construction, commercial, hospitality and healthcare sectors looking after clients right across the UK.
It has to be said there is no shortage of recruitment agencies on the south coast, but with Real Recruitment Solutions there is a genuine desire to build relationships and really get to know exactly what employers are looking for, and truly understand which roles are best suited for job seekers.
Now, five years on and the company is thriving, working with some key businesses on a local and national level. Speaking of her optimism for the future, Jacqueline commented, “I am passionate about enhancing the already high standards of service we offer and I am really looking forward to seeing Real Recruitment Solutions grow.”
“People are our business. The Staying Power of Contactless Payment
Just Shutters Expanding An Exciting New Chapter
Contactless cards are increasingly becoming part of our daily spending routine, whether we're popping down to the shops for a few essentials, or jumping onto public transport.
Just Shutters has enjoyed great success since the company was founded in 2006. From the roots of a Southbourne home-office, this specialist shutter company has gone from strength to strength.
There are currently 58 million contactless cards in circulation, and they're fast becoming a handy alternative, when making a low-value payment, to trying to tease out that loose bit of change wedged in the bottom of your wallet.
specialist knowledge and impeccable service. These ‘local’ business ethics have remained at its core as the company expanded into different territories across the South; taking franchisees that held true to the brand and very soon Just Shutters could be found in every county across the south.

He says, "I take great pride in assisting Companies achieve their strategic goals and meeting head on the challenges they face, I enjoy nothing better than being an integral part of a thriving, happy team."
2015 has heralded new bolder ambitions! The company is making the biggest leap yet, as the founders Chris and Helen Rocker have taken on business manager Simon Osterloh (pictured above) to oversee the day to day running of company operations. Simon’s business management background across a number
New franchisee Richard Hopper, pictured with his wife, is now proud owner of the Just Shutters Manchester and Cheshire franchise, expanding the company North – a push, which the company is keen to continue with the launch of new franchise website www.shutter-franchise.co.uk.
So how likely is it that someone will copy your details? Someone would have to be standing very close to copy your details without you knowing, and the card would probably have to be touched against a mobile card reading device too. The UK Cards Association says instances of fraud on contactless cards are "extremely rare", with losses of less than a penny for every £100 spent.
And if your card is used fraudulently, The UK Cards Association says consumers are fully protected against any fraud losses and will not be left out of pocket. Card providers should reimburse victims of contactless fraud, as long as they have taken reasonable steps to keep their card safe. And, if you're looking for another possible way to foil the fraudsters, the solution could be in your kitchen.
There are currently 58 million contactless cards in circulation, and they're fast becoming a handy alternative, when making a low-value payment, to trying to tease out that loose bit of change wedged in the bottom of your wallet. According to trade body, The UK Cards Association, more contactless transactions took place during the first nine months of 2014 than the previous six years combined: a record £2.32 billion. But there have been concerns about the security of contactless cards. Consumer group Which? acquired card reading technology to test how easy it is to remotely "steal" details from contactless cards, and managed to order a £3,000 television... The limit for a single contactless transaction will increase from £20 to £30 in September, despite one in eight Which? members saying they had had a problem paying with their contactless card in the past year, or had made an accidental payment.
Opening the doors to its flagship showroom in 2008, Just Shutters soon dominated the Dorset area, boasting the finest range of interior shutters on the market and coupling this with

So how can you protect your card? Well, if you have a few contactless cards, it's a good idea generally to take the one you want to pay with out of your wallet to pay, rather than just swiping the wallet on the reader. Just swiping the wallet could mean the reader takes the payment from a card you didn't intend to pay with.
The perfect event for smaller groups to join to make a grand festive celebration! From only £35.00 per person, enjoy an apéritif on arrival, three course festive dinner with tea or coffee and a disco.

My day didn’t start too well. Everything had got on top of me and I felt really low. When I called the Macmillan Support Line, I didn’t know where to start. But somehow they helped me find the words. Just talking honestly about how I felt was such a relief. Now I don't have to cope with the bad days on my own.
