Presidential Thoughts Mandy Payne, President, BCTC Welcome to this month’s magazine. As we enter the exciting summer period that fuels business in our town, I thought it pertinent to highlight what causes we’re giving back to for the next year.

After much deliberation, I am pleased to announce, on behalf Bournemouth Chamber of Trade and Commerce, my three chosen charities as President for 2014 are: BHCA, Lewis Manning Hospice and Wessex Cancer Trust.

BCHA is an organisation which gives support with housing, learning and living for those without a home throughout the South West, while Lewis Manning is a voluntary Hospice in Poole which provides specialist care to over six hundred local people suffering from cancer and other lifelimiting illnesses. Our final choice, Wessex Cancer, provides grants to individuals suffering with cancer across Dorset to help them cope with the increased living costs they can be left with.

It is always a hard choice to choose three charities to support for the year as there are so many local and national charities which do phenomenal work – as evident by the work done by the charities on our own Charity Forum here at BCTC. The charity forum was formed to help to grow relationships between business and charities – we have over 46 charity members at this time. Great relationships can assist both ways – fund raising, skills sharing and marketing benefits have been identified – to name but a few.

This year I, along with the other members of the Chamber, decided to choose three charities which are local to our area and specifically provide a crucial service to local residents. I strongly feel that without these charities many people would be lost. As our chosen charities we will aim to support them across all our events in the upcoming year.

Bournemouth Chamber of Trade and Commerce will be hosting a variety of events for local trade and commercial companies throughout the year and we welcome all those who would like to be supported or are interested in joining.

Dorset LEP invests over £3/4 million in old Remploy factory The Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), together with help from Borough of Poole’s Economic Development team, is supporting a series of exciting NEW Social Enterprise Schemes with the announcement of a five-year funding loan of £775,000 to BCHA. The former Alder Hills factory is being transformed into a hub of innovative Social Enterprise Schemes by Sequal Solutions, BCHA’s social enterprise arm.

Having lain empty since Remploy closed its doors in 2012, the renovation has now begun and completion is due in Autumn 2014. The centre will create employment and learning opportunities. It will encourage local people to get involved with a diverse variety of initiatives, from a training and skills academy, upcycling pre-loved furniture and bicycles, to gaining catering qualifications at its onsite café using local home grown produce.

Dorset LEP is keen to support the social enterprise centre as it will provide excellent skills training for local people leading to an increase in job opportunities in a range of sectors across the county.

Bournemouth Watt A Waste! Castlepoint Number Targets Energy Costs Works’nWords Celebrates Second Anniversary Southbourne residents Edward and Connie Rothman, owners of Bournemouth NumberWorks’nWords tuition centre, are celebrating two years helping Bournemouth students reach their full potential.

The tuition centre, located in Southbourne Crossroads, provides maths and English tuition for students from primary through GCSE. They help children who have learning gaps as well as children who are working above their year level. In addition, they offer 11+ exam preparation. Mum Nikki says, “Huge thanks to Edward & the guys at NumberWorks’nWords for helping to unleash Joe’s potential.”

Bournemouth’s Castlepoint Shopping Park has, over 7 years, focused on recycling waste and last year achieved a milestone by achieving zero waste to landfill. Now the Management team is stepping up its ongoing fight against energy wastage as part of its eco-friendly mandate. Over recent months, and over many visitors heads, Gareth Dix, Senior Electrical Engineer at the park has been working high above the top deck of the car park replacing over 100 of the original bulbs with new energy saving LED lighting.

Peter Matthews, General Manager at Castlepoint, said that the £35,000 investment will contribute to their battle against bills and energy wastage: “Since 2004 Castlepoint has saved an average of 100,000 kilowatts per hour each year but achieved a saving of 41,000 kilowatt hours last year. Our aim now is to minimise the power we use to light the centre down to only 1 million kilowatt hours per year, without reducing the safety and comfort of our shoppers.

We have 211,000 kilowatt hours to lose! The installation of the new car park lighting will also mean less time required on maintenance and the lights are controlled by both sensors and

timers to be even more efficient.”

Future plans include LED lighting for the lower level car park which already has energy saving lighting in sections that automatically dims when sensors detect no movement.

Since 2004 Castlepoint has saved an average of 100,000 kilowatts per hour each year but achieved a saving of 41,000 kilowatt hours last year.

High hopes for BCHA as new ambassador joins

New Recruit for Bennington Green Bennington green is delighted to announce the appointment of a new Office Manager.

Victoria Swann has joined the firm to ensure that efficiency and professionalism is maintained as the firm continues to increase in size.

Vikki, who studied at Parkstone Grammar, said: “I am delighted to join the Bennington Green team. Everyone has made me feel very welcome and there’s a great buzz about the office.

Jack Romero – A brief history

Hopes are high at BCHA, as Jack Romero, whose rags to riches story has been featured nationally, has signed up to be the new charity ambassador of the organisation.

BCHA, which provides lasting solutions to homelessness, unemployment and social exclusion in our communities throughout the South is thrilled to announce, Jack Romero, as the organisation’s charity ambassador. Jack, who led a rather turbulent life when after fleeing Lebanon, his war-torn country of birth at the age of 17, rose through adversity from sleeping rough on the streets of London, to owning his very own airline which was sold for £30 million.

Jack’s appointment was announced at BCHA’s staff conference on the 10th June, after giving a presentation summarising his story, Jack received a standing ovation from staff members who commented, “Jack will be a truly amazing ambassador for us, his determination, ability to not lose hope and to keep going no matter how bad things got is just the inspiration our clients need.”

On becoming the new charity ambassador of BCHA, Jack Romero has commented: “With my personal background I feel I can truly relate to what many who come to the organisation are going through. The work that BCHA do is extremely important. Without support people in such situations can easily begin to lose hope. Without hope, there is no determination to achieve and that can lead to a very dark place.

I am enormously passionate about the work of BCHA, delighted to become an ambassador and will be helping wherever possible.”

With little money, no grasp of the English language and without a place to stay Jack lived his first few years in England on the streets of London.

However Jack had an undying dream of becoming a pilot. It was with this dream in mind that Jack took any job he could find, sometimes working as many as three at a time in order to fund his passion and gain flying lessons. Yet this did not come cheap; two hours of flying lessons cost a week’s worth of wages and, unable to pay his rent, Jack was twice evicted from his lodgings and frequently forced to sleep rough.

But Jack persevered and banked the 700 hours of air time needed, gaining his private pilots licence in 1984. After working as an aerial photographer, Jack faced yet another setback as he was made redundant. With only a months-worth of rent left in his pocket, Jack realised his new dream, to set up his own airline, and invested that month’s rent into it. Whilst coming within weeks of being evicted and declared bankrupt, Jack was able to gain an airline licence, offices and £6 million pound from investors to form British Mediterranean Airways. From then on Jack’s airline took off and in 2010 Jack’s airline was sold for £30 million.

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi the founder of the programme introduced the technique 60 years ago in order to regenerate the world. Since then over 7 million people irrespective of race or religion have learned the technique.

Meditation has been misunderstood. That it is difficult, only the few get result and that practical life and our time has to be compromised in order get maximum results. Indeed we find the opposite to be the case when teaching Transcendental Meditation because it is so easy to practice.

It is evident that we cannot find satisfaction if our focus and attention is only on the surface of life’s ups and downs. During the practice of the Transcendental Meditation technique the mind settles down as stress and anxiety automatically dissolves in the body because we get level of rest 2-3 times deeper than sleep. We develop integrated brain functioning; that is unique and

Fernheath Play Let all the children play Fernheath Play is a reg.charitable Co(No:1148263) which has been running an Adventure Playground and playcentre at West Howe since 1976.

and 12 part-time staff, now that the local authority can no longer support our work to the same extent that they used to. We have no paid fund-raisers.

We welcome schoolage children from all backgrounds, whatever their ethnicity, culture, religion,gender, special needs or disabilities, after school,every weekend and every school holiday all year round.

Some of the children are on the Autistic spectrum and need one to one care. Many of the children are from families who are under stress through poverty,unemployment,alcohol and or drug abuse, divorce and disability; our aim has always been to reduce these stresses by giving children somewhere safe to play and giving parents a break from24/7 caring.

To avoid excluding any through poverty we charge only an annual reg.fee of £15 and no admission charges for our 3 hour play sessions. Working Parents who need All day care from 8.30am to 5.30pm do pay £20a day.

Equipment and capital costs can be covered as local organisations and individuals have helped with this generously,but it is increasingly hard to fund the high staffing costs for our 2 full-time

Health & wellbeing Tech a break Lack of time is often cited as one of the biggest barriers for not being as healthy as we’d like what with work, family commitments, the tedious commute into the office and a busy social life.

But these days, on top of all that, we also have modern technology zapping our precious minutes, with many (in fact, most) of us checking our phones, emails, and Facebook and Twitter accounts from the moment we wake to the moment we sleep .

Guaranteed, almost everyone standing at a bus stop, sitting on a train or even sitting on the sofa is fiddling with their gadgets, whether they’re listening to music, playing games or indulging in a quick selfie.

In itself, this now unavoidable part of life might not be doing us any real harm, but the side-effect of gadget addiction often means we’re losing valuable time that could be spent exercising, relaxing and eating healthily - three things which are vital to our overall health and wellbeing.

So before you declare: “I don’t have any time to work out!” take a long hard look at how many hours a day you’re spending glued to a screen.

Could you cut back on tech-time and replace it with some wellbeing wonders? You might be surprised by how much you can achieve in just short time-pockets.

“For those willing to get sweaty and breathless and workout at a tougher level, potentially just 15 minutes of exercise four times a week can deliver the same great health protective effects than long sessions,” says Rob Jones, a personal trainer at StrideFit (www.stridefit.com).

Also, according to research recently published in Organisational Behaviour and Human Decision Processes, late night smartphone, tablet, computer and TV use, interferes with our sleep and productivity the following day.

The devices emit a blue light which disturbs the way the brain processes the hormone, melatonin, which induces relaxation and sleep. “Getting less than seven hours’ sleep a night is below the recommended guidelines and is associated with a range of problems”. In the long run, this can include an increased risk of weight gain, heart attacks, diabetes and certain types of cancer.

So even if you can’t bear to tear yourself away from the screen completely , at least try and free up an hour - or just 15 minutes - a day, and you’ll soon realise the benefits of logging off.

TIME-ZAPPER: Social butterfly While it’s great to keep in contact with everyone and stay in the loop with those you love, a short break from scrolling through friends’ status feeds and photos won’t damage your social life. It could, however, be a great chance to activate your body and mind with some exercise.

TIME SWAPS: 15 minutes: Try a short bodyweight circuit at home or in the garden. No equipment required; you’re using your own bodyweight to build strength, with anything from squats, push-ups and sit-ups. Shorter rest periods between exercises will mean you’ll burn fat faster.

30 minutes: Go for a run. A brief half-hour jog

could boost your fitness in no time. Alternate sprint and jog speeds for bigger benefits.

1 hour: Take up a class or team sport, such as touch rugby which is great for all ages and fitness levels.

TIME-ZAPPER: Square eyes Watching Breaking Bad may have helped you get through the cold winter nights, but now the longer days and warmer weather are here, it’s time to change your habits. There’s nothing wrong with sitting down to enjoy programmes you enjoy, but mindlessly staring at the screen day after day could be doing your relaxation levels no favours.

TIME SWAPS: 15 minutes: Learn to meditate. It may feel odd at first, but even a short amount of time sitting quietly with absolutely no disruptions and focusing on your breathing can benefit your mind no end.

30 minutes: Go for a walk - and look at what’s around you, instead of keeping your head down glued to your smartphone screen. The fresh air, as well as taking in your surroundings, is a simple but failsafe wellbeing booster.

1 hour: Take a yoga class or do a session at home in your living room. As well as stretching your limbs and increasing blood flow, you’ll benefit from increased calmness too.

TIME-ZAPPER: Gorging on gadgets Do yourself a favour and leave the internet behind when you finish work for the day. Ditch some of the time you’d usually spend checking emails, browsing the web or social media sites to prepare some healthy grub. It only saves you money and time, but also improves your body and mind.

TIME SWAPS: 15 minutes: In the morning, this is all the time it takes to have a good breakfast full of low GI foods like porridge, or a colourful fruit plate, which will top up vitamin levels and keep your energy levels stable until lunch.

30 minutes: After work, make yourself a healthy lunch to take to work the next day.

This will give you more time to enjoy your lunch break and relax, rather than standing in a queue to buy an overpriced sarnie. You’ll also have complete control over what you’re eating, meaning less hidden sugar and salt and more health-boosting ingredients.

1 hour: After a long day at work, put all the devices away and make an occasion of dinner time, giving your meal the full attention it deserves without the constant disruption of bleeps and vibrations. Have fun experimenting with recipes and boost your health in the process.

A four-minute intense workout, Tabata’s been clinically proven to be the most effective way of burning calories for longer while also hugely increasing fitness. The basic principle is 20 seconds of intense exercise followed by 10 seconds of rest, repeated eight times. That’s about the same time as it takes to make a cup of tea! It is named after Japanese research scientists Professor Izumi Tabata, whose clinical trials have shown that after a Tabata session you can burn more calories for up to 12 hours. The four minutes can consist of the same exercise or a variety of exercises - the more you keep moving, the better.

What’s it like?

The 20-minute class consisted of a 10-minute warm-up, four-minute Tabata and a six-minute cool down. We did two ‘killer’ exercises, which vary with each class and are a combination of bodyweight movements. There’s also a ‘kinder’ option to make the workout easier if you’re struggling. Even though the trainer was driving the pace, it’s down to you how hard you push, but obviously, the harder you go, the more you will reap the benefits. Tabata is not for the faint-hearted and offers an exciting and quick way of exercising.

Local creatives Life’s a Silicon Beach Bournemouth and Poole’s growing reputation as a digital, advertising and media hub has received a huge boost with the expansion of this September’s Silicon Beach festival. Suzi Dixon reports.

There’s nothing more satisfying than combining a career you are passionate about with beautiful surroundings like ours. So it should come as no surprise that Bournemouth and Poole attracts a number of creative types in media and advertising - as well as, of course, a growing digital community.

With the expansion of the Silicon Beach conference into Silicon Beach+, three weeks of complimentary events taking place across Bournemouth.

September 18 and 19 are the dates for the fourth, and largest, Silicon Beach, attracting 21 of the UK’s leading thinkers and practitioners from the worlds of advertising and digital innovation.

Significantly, Bournemouth Borough Council have committed to support the conference for the next three years; founder Matt Desimier, of ThinkCreateDo, is delighted.

“I’ve produced the two-day event for the last three years, the intention always being to create an event of national significance that just happens to be based in Bournemouth,” he said. “ The event has been a huge success, enticing some big name speakers, and it continues to do so. The line-up this year is very impressive, even if I do say so myself, and the audience travels from all over the UK to attend.”

Four out of the 21 speakers this year are homegrown, so to speak. Nick Farnhill grew up in Wimborne and went to QE School; Danielle Newnham is a Bournemouth University graduate; Dean Johnson is a Arts University graduate; and Simon White once ran an agency based in Poole.

As well as a jam-packed programme of speakers, there will be plenty of ideas exchange going on behind the scenes, too, with the town’s digital and media elite all in attendance. Arabella LewisSmith, of Salad Creative, will be celebrating eight nominations and a Web Design win in last month’s prestigious RAR awards, as well as a

Best for being On Budget from the RAR Awards earlier this year. Certainly, Arabella believes this area is the perfect environment for creatives in the tech and media industries. “Our office overlooks Poole Harbour,” Arabella said. “You can’t get much more idyllic than that!”

Bournemouth and Poole’s thriving digital and media community is due in part to the worldclass Media School at Bournemouth University, whose graduates have either stayed in the town or migrated back after working at the highest level in London.

There have been some exciting and ambitious start ups in the past three years to add to the 400+ agencies in total across Dorset. UpRaw and DoMore Magazine, thriving what’s on and what’s hot digital magazines; The Game, an ambitious glossy high end health magazine; and BournemouthNews.info, an independent news website who work with Bournemouth’s Media School to give students real-time experience of reporting, photography and video production - they will be out in force throughout the two days of Silicon Beach, experimenting with new realtime news reporting techniques and social media formats.

“And then if you position Silicon Beach and Silicon Beach+ alongside the area having the World’s Largest Open Device Lab, WordCampUK coming to Bournemouth this July, All About People taking place last month and Re:Develop taking place in August too, ThinkCreateDo, the two universities and a myriad of award-winning agencies, Bournemouth is emerging as a creative and digital hotspot to rival Brighton or Bristol,” Matt said.

Bournemouth Coastal BID Time to take breath It’s just over two years since the Bournemouth Coastal Business Improvement District (BID) was voted through by local businesses – and it’s been a bit of a whirlwind since then, says Alun Williams, Coastal BID Manager.

Bournemouth is the only place in Britain to have voted through two BIDs simultaneously – on Friday 13th April 2012! The Coastal BID runs from Westbourne, through the West Cliff, East Cliff, Boscombe and Southbourne, to Hengistbury Head. It shares an office with the Town Centre BID. However, they are two independent companies, with their own staff and separate Business Plans..

The Coastal BID Business Plan sets out its objectives, eligibility criteria and framework budget for the five year term. There are around 760 businesses contributing £480,000pa.

Some 50% of the Coastal BID income is derived from primarily tourism related firms on the East Cliff and West Cliff. The other half comes mainly from retailers, food and drink providers in the coastal villages of Westbourne, Boscombe and Southbourne.

The BID has 3 key areas of promotional activity.

On the tourism marketing side it adopted, along with Bournemouth Tourism, the “Colour Your Life” theme which appears on all publications.

It’s run two autumn and two spring marketing campaigns aimed at attracting more staying visitors: Autumn Glow, Blooming Beautiful Bournemouth, Golden Ticket and this spring’s event orientated promotion which supported the new Wheels Festival.

Events have been a strong and growing theme.

The Coastal BID has sponsored four major, new, town events – The Family Adventure Festival (returning this autumn as “The Big Bournemouth Adventure Weekend”), Christmas ‘Gardens of Light’, Wheels and the P1 ‘Grand Prix of the Sea’. Locally it sponsored Christmas activities both years in the three coastal villages, plus the Great Exhibition of Boscombe (linked to Arts by the Sea), Halloween (2012 and 2013), the Tourism Award winning Shake & Stir (vintage music fashion, cars, food & drink), Talent and Fashion Competitions (Boscombe 2013) and the Easter Adventure (2012 & 2103).

Other activities in the coastal villages have included the popular Coastal BID walking map, and a wayfinding and signage project (in partnership with the Town Centre BID and Bournemouth Council). This will see a new coordinated pedestrian signage scheme installed

this autumn. 40 push to talk handsets to help combat anti-social behaviour in Boscombe (available free to BID businesses); an important retail research project (in conjunction with NCTA) and new footfall cameras. Three of the off season marketing campaigns have also encouraged local residents to explore Westbourne, Boscombe and Southbourne.

As BH Business goes to print the Coastal BID Board is also pausing, as they too review activities over the last two years and confirm the plans for the coming BID year which starts on 1 July 2014.

Zest for Bournemouth as Citrus Building launches Prospective buyers have begun viewing the first residential and commercial property to come from the Bournemouth Development Company (BDC), the delivery partner for Bournemouth Borough Council’s Town Centre Vision.

A show apartment has been opened at the stylish five-storey Citrus Building overlooking Horseshoe Common after an official launch attended by more than 60 guests.

The £12 million development, on the former council-owned surface car park at Leyton Mount, comprises 64 apartments and, once open, will house a 290 sq m (3,120 sq ft) café or restaurant.

Funding included a £5 million investment from the Get Britain Building programme run by the Homes & Communities Agency.

Duncan Johnston, BDC Development Director, said: “The launch event was a chance to say thank you to those involved in bringing the Citrus Building to fruition as we move into the go-to-market phase. This is an architecturally impressive building, with beautifully appointed apartments, which will help rejuvenate the town centre and

strengthen the area’s presence as a much sought-after location.”

Firms active in the planning and property sectors, such as Terence O’Rourke, Goadsby, Bond Dickinson and Princecroft Willis, were represented at the launch along with organisations such as Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership, Bournemouth Tourism Management Board, AFC Bournemouth and Bournemouth Chamber of Trade & Commerce.

Councillor John Beesley, Leader of Bournemouth Borough Council, who cut the ribbon to open the Citrus Building show apartment, said: “Our regeneration partnership BDC is going from strength to strength as we continue to stimulate the local economy, in this case through attracting new residents to the town centre, especially those who are first-time buyers.”

Apartments at the Citrus Building – so-called because of its bright orange, yellow and green exterior and curvy shape – range from studios to three bedrooms, all incorporating stylish, contemporary design.

Prospective occupiers must pre-register their interest for an

appointment to view the show apartment. The first occupiers are expected to move into the Citrus Building towards the end of the summer.

BDC, a regeneration partnership between Bournemouth Borough Council and Morgan Sindall Investments, is developing a number of surface car park sites in the town centre. The first development to be completed was the nearby Madeira Road multi-storey car park which opened earlier this year offering 382 public parking spaces over seven floors. Alongside, work is under way on three blocks of much-needed student accommodation for the Arts University Bournemouth. Due to open for the 2014-15 academic year, the residences will house 378 students.

Positive news for the Bournemouth area regarding new business formation.

Figures in the brand new Duport Business Confidence Report for Bournemouth show an increase in company formation numbers during the first quarter of 2014. I thank them for the following information.

The first quarter of the year saw a surge in company formations in Bournemouth, according to a new report from Duport.co.uk.

According to the research, there were 455 new companies formed during Q1, representing a 12% rise on the same period last year. The report also shows that February was a record month for company formations in Bournemouth.

The rise in company formations could be attributed to the area’s increasing popularity as a tourist destination. Bournemouth’s National Coastal Tourism Academy recently celebrated its first year of promoting the resort. Over the course of the year, the Academy focussed on creating an enhanced visitor experience, rolling out new training programmes and the creation of a new attraction, the Coastal Activity Park at Boscombe.

Mayor of Bournemouth to present awards at Jon Egging Trust blue skies ceremony Students from Glenmoor and Winton Academies in Bournemouth were presented with awards to recognise their completion of the Blue Skies Programme by the Mayor of Bournemouth and Test Pilot Flt Lt Mike Crockford.

The charity was set up in memory of Red Arrows pilot Jon Egging who tragically lost his life on 20th August 2011 whilst completing a display at the Bournemouth Air Festival. The charity realises his dream of helping young people overcome adversity, identify their strengths and work towards their ambitions.

Like Jon we want to see the next generation succeed and although we are a young charity we are growing fast. Within the next two years we will be operating in nine counties across the UK and by 2020 we aim to be offering life-changing opportunities through our Blue Skies Youth Programmes to 1000 young people every year.

20 students aged 13 to 15 from the schools have been mentored through the nine session

programme by inspirational individuals from MOD Boscombe Down, Wessex Archaeology, Air Traffic Control Swanwick, and HMS Collingwood.

With the help of trained personnel from these organisations, the level 1 and level 2 students have been guided through problem solving, teamwork and communication tasks, which will provide the Level 1 students with credits towards a qualification in BTEC Workskills.

The Glenmoor/Winton school has also named their hall the Jon Egging Building and will be unveiling a plaque in his honour.

West is Best Westbeach Restaurant June in Bournemouth usually ensures one thing. Traffic to the beach increases infinitely. But perhaps that’s not solely down to the ensuing sunshine.

It might just have something to do with one of the town’s favourite eateries being situated just alongside our seven-mile stretch of golden sand.

I’ve visited WestBeach before, to enjoy one of their popular Lobster and Burger nights, but had never dined A la Carte here. Though my recent visit highlighted why the seaside restaurant is in the jewel of Bournemouth’s gastronomic crown, and why it is one of just three listed in this year’s Good Food Guide.

On arrival, we enjoyed sipping on cold, crisp Prosecco, as we enjoyed some appertisers – hot pitta strips to dip in smooth, creamy Taramasalata – which served us well as we perused the extensive menu, featuring the best that the ocean has to offer (plus a good selection of dishes to keep the carnivorous amongst us happy).

To start, I enjoyed my fresh scallops served classically with pea puree and deliciously crispy parma ham, whilst my colleague selected an interesting take on an oriental favourite: Crispy duck egg, Peking style leg meat, served with cucumber, spring onion, crispy pancakes and of course the obligatory hoi sin dressing. Divine!

Sticking with the aquatic theme, I opted for the roasted fillet of monkfish, with silky-smooth mashed potato, glazed heritage carrots, decadent bone marrow, in a red wine shallot jus. My plate was clean come the end. My colleague preferred a meat option, and was not disappointed with his soft pork belly, confit for 24 hours, perfectly accompanied by sweet potato puree, a butter bean and chorizo cassoulet and finished off with circles of crispy squid.

Portion sizes are generous, so we welcomed a 10 minute break before dessert – the perfect opportunity to take in the simply magnificent seascape before us.

I confess, I had checked out the menu online (west-beach.co.uk) before our visit, and had already decided on my pudding in advance – and the warm chocolate brownie with glossy chocolate sauce, popcorn and clotted cream lived up to every expectation – worth the visit for this alone! My colleague’s Rhubarb-infused crème brulee crumble wasn’t to my taste, but he polished off the lot.

The truth is, if you’re looking for somewhere to impress clients, you can’t go far wrong here.

We are lucky enough to live in one of the best seaside resorts in Europe, and it is that spirit of the ocean that is embraced here – delivering precisely that: the quintessential taste (and view) of the sea – nothing less.

Queen’s speech highlights Major pension changes afoot giving greater flexibility and access to pensions.

Last month Queen’s Speech set out two Bills that could change the lives of millions of pensioners in the future. These changes have been set out to deliver greater flexibility and more access to pensions than ever before, and the government asserts that it will help deal with the significant pension shortfall that currently exists.

The first major change, a new Private Pensions Bill could allow for “collective pension” schemes. These schemes - also known as “pooled pensions” - would be offered directly through employers, with the aim being to reduce the risk to individuals – a system that is popular in Denmark and The Netherlands.

In the second major change, The Pensions Tax Bill could give individuals the freedom and choice to access their pension as they deem appropriate. This Bill addresses the rules that currently allow retirees to take a maximum of just 25% of their pension pot as a lump sum - the changes will now allow people to take the whole pot, subject to tax.

Richmond Home Improvement Co, Dorset’s leading replacement window and door installer warns of the perils of leaving general maintenance until it’s too late.

A recent call out to Richmond from a lady who was unable to close her patio door, involved completely boarding up the window to secure the premises.

Allan Tofield, of Richmond said: “This lady said there was a problem with her patio door as she couldn’t shut it, but when we arrived it was evident that the whole unit was completely broken and would require total replacement.

“First we had to remove the broken glass but were unable to completely secure the door leaf which was completely damaged so had to resort to boarding up for her security and safety. This added further unnecessary costs as a replacement patio door cost in the region of £1,200.

He added, “This is a classic case of lack of maintenance. The customer advised that the door had been difficult to open and close for some time. She now realises she should have called us out in the first instance to repair the frame which would have prevented damage to the door at a relatively small cost. As it was, the final cost involved total replacement of the door and a call out as well as the securing of the premises in the absence of the frame and glass and a further installation.”

Richmond advises that this could have been avoided with a few simple repairs.

Interview Nev Wilshire To viewers of The Call Centre, he is the real-life David Brent — a cheerfully deluded office manager whose eccentric charms inspired Ricky Gervais, no less, to dub him Britain’s most cringe-worthy boss.

How’s business nev?

Business is okay. It’s nothing to write home about. The financial side of things is picking up; the grant side is up in the air. It comes to April and the funding goes all over the place when the financial year starts, and then you get going again, so it’s just what it is. You get used to it.

How has your life and the business changed since series one of the call centre?

Yes, I’m doing a revisit of a money makeover I did nine years ago. The reason I wanted to do this one is because it is perhaps the most difficult money makeover I’ve ever been involved in. They were a family who were in terrible, terrible trouble. I had to cancel their Christmas. I had to tell them they had to sell their house - they’d run up £150,000 on the credit cards. It’s easy to go back three months later and say, ‘Oh yes, they’ve started to improve,’ but nine years on... did it work?

To be honest I enjoyed it. People were lovely they were so kind and congratulating.

Series one is out on dvd, so tell us about the second on bbc three?

The BBC are really excited about it; they think it’s funnier than the last one. There are a few new characters, and some of the old established ones - Hayley the tea lady; Twe, Thorpy. They’re still doing their bit.

There’s Jeffrey, he’s an accountant who came in from Nigeria, did a Masters in Swansea University, but he couldn’t get a job because his accountancy qualifications from Nigeria didn’t count over here. I found out a bit about him and said, ‘Get down to the accounts department and tell them to give you a job’.

He’s worked for me for a couple of years, and he came in about three or four months ago and his work permit was running out and said, “Can you sign my work permit?” - I won’t tell you any more because it goes downhill from there.

What’s your view on cold callers when you’re at home having your dinner?

You have to be better than everybody else. To be better you need the best systems, but most important is the best people.

I always listen to their pitch. It annoys me when they slam the phone down on me; particularly if it’s a foreign call centre - some of them have no manners. When they’re not doing their job properly it annoys me. If there’s a cheery voice and they’re genuinely trying to help you, it’s great.

18 Adido amigos get on their bikes for charity Eighteen people, all from the same Bournemouth business, are preparing to take part in the Macmillan Dorset Bike Ride, in aid of the cancer support charity.

Council-operated collection vehicles are out and about across the borough and beyond six days a week - did you know they can collect your commercial waste and recycling?

Businesses that sign up for the Council service can benefit from the easy recycling offered by a co-mingled collection - glass, plastic, metal, paper and card all go in one bin.

Recycling collections are much cheaper than general rubbish, so going green can also save your business money! It’s not as difficult as you think to start recycling at work – office recycling bins are readily available and can be emptied into wheelie bins which come in a variety of sizes. Or, if boxes are your main recyclable material, the Council can provide stickers for bundles of cardboard.

Food waste is also perfect for recycling and, using Anaerobic Digestion, household waste from the Borough is already treated in this way. By letting the waste “ferment” in gas-tight containers and harvesting those gases food waste can be used to generate renewable electricity. What’s left can be used as a fertiliser in agriculture, completing the full lifecycle of the food from farm to plate and back again! Starting from 1st July businesses can also benefit from this service, further reducing their general waste costs.

As a last resort there is a competitively-priced general waste collection service. Bournemouth Borough Council takes all general waste, household and commercial, for onward treatment using sophisticated mechanical sorting processes. These processes pull out further recyclable materials, and create a fuel for energy recovery from the remainder. The end result ensures in excess of 90% of general waste is still diverted from landfill.
