SANDBANKS PENINSULA COULD NOT BE A MORE PERFECT LOCATION FOR THIS STRIKING STRUCTURE, NOR COULD IT’S SERVICES BE MORE SUITED TO THE NEEDS OF THE ENVIRONMENT. The design is the brainchild of Eddie Mitchell, Seven Development’s Managing Director, who continues to put Poole on the map in terms of its architectural merits and what the area can offer to its residents and visitors to the area. The three storey structure would offer a casual café on the ground floor, bistro style restaurant on the first floor and exclusive cocktail bar and A la Carte restaurant on the crest of the ‘wave’ occupying the second floor. Constructed mainly from glass, the resemblance of a wave is no coincidence, in consideration of its waterside location, with Poole Harbour on its North West shoulder and the famous Sandbanks beaches to its South East. The opportunity to build such a landmark as this is something that Eddie has had his heart set on from a young age. Having been born and bred in the Poole area and building within the locality for over 30 years, his iconic buildings are now scattered over much of the Borough. To achieve the goal of creating and bequeathing such a stamp to his home town, would be his dream… his tour de force.

13

14

15

Lightbeam would arguably be his most adventurous and boldest addition yet, no doubt controversial, another ‘marmite’ development. But debatably a worthy addition to the future of the township. Eddie’s vision is illustrated by these GGI graphics, which give us a sneak peek at what could be the future of dining on the peninsula. The ground floor café would allow a pleasant environment in which beach goers and amblers can use the coffee bar to obtain beverages and light snacks to be enjoyed within light airy surroundings, where the views can still be appreciated from the shelter of indoors, or to take away to eat ‘al fresco’. The first floor bistro restaurant would provide a more formal dining experience, whether breakfast, lunch or supper, offering locally sourced and freshly cooked

16

cuisine. Being in an elevated position would offer the clientele a strategically placed hovering position betwixt the dual aspect shorelines. The marriage of good food and arguably some of the finest views in the country would serve to create an idyllic encounter. The jewel in the crown, at the apex of the wave, would without doubt be the exclusive top floor A la Carte restaurant, a fine dining experience with food served by award winning chefs, fine wines and cocktails offered by flair bartenders, to be supped whilst absorbing the breath taking views obtained by the prominent position some 20m high above the hustle bustle of the world beneath. An unforgettable encounter, a prime location, a legendary edifice.

DRIVE TIME INFINITI IS A VERY EXCLUSIVE BRAND, AND WHEN THE COMPANY DECIDED TO INTRODUCE A SPECIAL EDITION CO-DESIGNED BY F1 CHAMPION SEBASTIAN VETTEL, YOU KNOW THAT IT REALLY IS SOMETHING VERY SPECIAL.

Based on the Infiniti FX 50 S Premium crossover which itself costs around £60,000, the Vettel version costs £100,800 - around £40,000 more and perhaps evoking a sharp intake of breath! But be in no doubt this Vettel version raises the elitist benchmark and confers rarified status on the owner. Only 200 will be available worldwide and they have real potential to be future classics. The FX Vettel offers more power, a revised ‘power boost’ exhaust system, special interior design, unique alloy wheels and a package of VIP treats including high-performance training with star racing drivers and invitations to special motor sport events and even sessions in an F1 race simulator!

26

27

28

The most noticeable driving change is a new exhaust system that produces a wonderful growl under even the most modest acceleration. Standard Infiniti models are always beautifully put together and this new Vettel special edition even more so as it is finished by German tuning specialist and manufacturer Brabus. It looks and sounds glorious. Owners are able to track the production status of their cars on complimentary bespoke iPads – also useful for recording every highlight of their FX Vettel Edition ownership. The FX Vettel Edition is powered by a 420 hp 5.0-litre V8 engine that offers a top speed of 155 mph (limited) and the 0 to 60mph time is just 5.6 seconds - outstanding for a car of this size and weight. The modest power increase over the standard car comes courtesy of changes that include a new exhaust system which features an exhaust flap. Operated from a button on the dashboard, it boosts power and efficiency at the same time as enriching the drive with a delicious V8 burble. The aural stimulation is activated under acceleration or when the car is in manual mode and the transmission blips the throttle for down changes. Power is transmitted via a 7-speed automatic gearbox and four-wheel-drive, and there are also solid magnesium shift paddles on the steering wheel if you want to get more involved. Despite its awesome performance capability, combined fuel consumption is 21.5 mpg, quite respectable in this high-performance class. On the road the car is a sublime drive with taut, assured handling and an impressive precision feel helped by rear active steering and continuous damper control. This Vettel model certainly creates an immediate feeling of being in something that is really in a league of its own. That unique cachet is underlined by the fact that it takes 320 man-hours to build each of the FX Vettel models, most of the work done by hand.

DESTINY SANDBANKS “Following years of City living we decided to relocate to Sandbanks and fulfill our desire to wake up to a seaview in the mornings and have the beach on our doorstep. We found a truly unique property, with panoramic harbour views, however we wanted to put our own ‘stamp’ on the property. Given the size of the property we wanted to partner with a reputable local developer – Silver Arrow came highly recommended.

// THROUGHOUT THE PROCESS SILVER ARROW WERE VERY SUPPORTIVE, WHILST IT WAS OUR PROPERTY THEY WERE FOCUSED ON THE PROJECT, THEY LISTENED AND IMPLEMENTED OUR IDEAS

\\

The whole process was made clear and simple by the team at Silver Arrow, communication was great and if we had any questions during the build process no matter how trivial they were dealt with and were informed in a timely manner when we were needed to complete our choices for kitchens, bathrooms, lighting, paint colours etc. Throughout the process Silver Arrow were very supportive, whilst it was our property they were focused on the project, they listened and implemented our ideas and really cared about the appearance and quality of our home. Silver Arrow demonstrated exceptional business acumen, they were very aware of the qualities in a home that would lead to greater equity and re sale of the property and shared insight into the local market. We have maintained a great relationship and the team now manage all the on-going maintenance of the house – gardening, window cleaning and housekeeping, even keeping a watchful eye over the house when we are away. We truly have our dream home, and without a doubt this is down to the efforts of the Silver Arrow team. A big thankyou.” Owen & Jennie Owners of Destiny

GLORY CANFORD CLIFFS “We have visited Poole a number of times and particularly liked Canford Cliffs with its village atmosphere and being so close to the beach and harbour. We noted that many of the large modern houses in the area has been built by Silver Arrow and so it was somewhat wishful thinking when we walked into their offices and asked if they could build us something in the Canford Cliffs area within our more modest budget. The reception we received could not have been more welcoming and their positive attitude has continued throughout the whole process. From finding us a site that we could afford, obtaining all the necessary approvals, to constructing a new house to meet our requirements it has been a pleasure to work with them. Because of the quick programme we were working to, some aspects of the design evolved during the process and we always felt that they were very fair in the way they addressed the issues and dealt with the cost implications. They have always listened to our wishes and delivered to us a beautiful house whose traditional design sits comfortably within its context whilst achieving the contemporary appearance that we wanted and for which the company is renowned. Jil and Nigel Kirk Owners of Glory 34

IN DISCUSSION WITH FELIX BAUMGARTNER How do you feel now that you’ve had some time to reflect since your jump to think about your achievements? It’s still too much to fully comprehend. Besides the physical exhaustion and mental exhilaration, the huge response from people from around the world has been humbling. I am still taking it all in, and I truly appreciate all the good wishes and congratulations that have come my way. It’s been incredible. What are your plans for the near future? While I’ve enjoyed my time in New Mexico and will never forget my experiences – or the people – here, it’s time for me to start working my way home. I am heading to Los Angeles today, where I stayed while I did a lot of my training. I’ll enjoy some Southern California sunshine while I pack up and continue to try to absorb what I’ve experienced. I’ll also have a few media interviews while I’m in that area – the local media there have been fantastic throughout my stay. Then I’ll fly to the U.S. East Coast for a media tour in New York City and Washington DC on Monday and Tuesday. After that, I’ll get on the long flight back to Switzerland and -- not too long from now -- also Austria, to re-connect with all the family and friends who are waiting for me. I can’t wait to see them!

45

How about long term? What are your plans? Helicopters! You can’t keep me out of the air. I have already been flying as a commercial helicopter pilot in Europe, and now I will have the time to take that aspect of my career to the next level. I’m really looking forward to it. While you’re moving on to new adventures, people still can’t seem to get enough of Red Bull Stratos. How can they learn more? A feature-length documentary produced by the BBC and National Geographic is out now. It covers the project from the early stages through to the present – I just finished the last filming with their crew recently. I’ll enjoy seeing it and reliving the adventure myself! 46

How does it feel for a man who has just accomplished the dream of a lifetime? I feel like 20 tonnes of ballast have just dropped off my shoulders, that’s how it feels after seven years of preparation and after you’ve played through this moment in your mind so many times before. It was an incredible up and down today, just like it’s been with the whole project. First we got off with a beautiful launch and then we had a bit of drama with the chest pack. We were close to aborting the mission because the heater for my visor wasn’t working properly. I thought ‘this can’t be happening’. It didn’t get any better and it was very draining. But we decided to go ahead anyhow. As you can see that was the right decision.

Our hearts all stood still as you started to spin. It looked like about 30 times. Were you counting yourself? The exit was actually perfect. I felt like I came away very well. But then I started spinning slowly. I thought I’d just spin a few times and that would be that, but then I started to speed up. It was really brutal at times. I thought for a few seconds that I’d lose consciousness. I didn’t feel a sonic boom because I was so busy just trying to stabilize myself. We’ll have to wait and see if we really broke the sound barrier. It was really a lot harder than I thought it was going to be.

Now you’ve had time to reflect, what do you feel has been the greatest achievement from doing the jump? I can think of no greater honor for myself – or for this team – than to know that people informed by our mission will use the data to take aerospace safety to the next level; or to spark children’s interest in science; or simply as inspiration to pursue their own goals. I look forward to seeing what the realization of their dreams holds for all of us. Making a supersonic freefall from the edge of space was always my dream. But I never dreamed how many people would share it.

CANFORD CLIFFS

SOLD WIMBORNE Guide price £897,500

One of the most exciting observations from our first year of trading in Canford Cliffs is our successes across such a diverse range of prices and property types. With sold prices ranging from £500,000 to £4m we have successfully introduced both local and out of area buyers to apartments, bungalows and detached houses. The market conditions remain very challenging and therefore we are careful to analyze the source of our buyers in order that we can provide a marketing strategy that will give our vendors unrivalled local, national and international coverage.

SOLD POOLE HARBOUR Guide price £3,250,000

Many of the international buyers generated by the trips highlighted in this and our previous features do favour London but there is always a ‘ripple’ effect. The widening gap between London and country/seaside homes is starting to stimulate many enquiries and applicants looking for second homes, a change of pace or just a bit of fresh air are registering. Already in 2013, our extensive network has resulted in a diverse range of sales from a Grade II listed period home in Wimborne at £850,000 to substantial waterside property in Poole at just under £3m. Our register has grown to over 60 available for sale with a total value of well over £100m and we very much welcome all enquiries.

THE ASIAN AWARDS

Sir Ben Kingsley

On 16th April UK Sotheby’s International Realty sponsored the The Asian Awards at London’s Grosvenor House. This star studded event hosted by Lord Sebastian Coe celebrates excellence among the global Asian community and recognises the outstanding achievements of individuals born within Asia across all disciplines of life. Sir Ben Kingsley was honoured with a Fellowship Award to celebrate his outstanding five decade career and the evening was attended by well known celebrities across the worlds of music, sport, fashion and business including Colin Jackson, Philip Treacy, Christian Louboutin and James Caan. As well as being an excellent place to profile UK Sotheby’s International Realty, the awards raised a significant sum for the charity Arms Around the Child.

INDIA As mentioned in our Winter 2012 article UK Sotheby’s International Realty travelled 4,170 miles to India on 31st January to showcase clients’ properties to a global audience of high net worth individuals at the three day long India Art Fair. The fair has become one of the world’s most attended modern and contemporary art fairs attracting 80,000 art lovers, collectors and curators across the globe. Understanding the synergy between art and property and the growing appetite in India for British real estate, UK Sotheby’s International Realty took a stand at the fair so it could showcase it’s portfolio of properties from its Canford Cliffs, Chelsea, Mayfair, Cobham, Henley on Thames and Stratford-uponAvon offices to this global audience of high net worth individuals.

Stuart Cole of UK Sotheby’s International Realty

KAZAKSTAN Our visit to India followed UK Sotheby’s International Realty’s overseas trip in November 2012 to Almaty, Kazakhstan, one of the world’s most exciting emerging markets. The company was handpicked to attend an overseas property exhibition at the exclusive Golf Club “Zhailyau”, an invitation only event for 70 high net worth individuals along with Sotheby’s International Realty’s representatives from New York, the South of France and Turkey. Each company gave an informative presentation on the property purchase process in their area and showcased the most exclusive real estate available for purchase. UK Sotheby’s International Realty’s presentation was so well received it was featured on the Kazakstan national news and was also reported in Kazakstan’s version of Forbes Magazine.

Stuart Cole, Head of Region for Surrey, Berkshire, Sussex and Kent and Svetlana Shcholokova who runs UK Sotheby’s International Realty’s Russian Desk attended on the company’s behalf and were able to introduce the bespoke property buying and relocation service UK Sotheby’s International Realty offers. As well as guiding people through the entire purchasing process in the UK we can introduce clients to specialist education consultants, staffing agencies, interior designers, security experts as well as professionals who help with the practical side of residing in the UK. UK Sotheby’s International Realty is now actively searching for properties on behalf of prominent clients in Kazakhstan who are relocating to UK for business and educational reasons.

Much work was put into the preparation of the exhibition in pre-arranging meetings during the visit with established and new contacts seeking to buy properties in the UK, liaising with Sotheby’s International Realty’s global representatives and Sotheby’s auction house to co-ordinate the visit as well as in notifying clients that their properties would be taken ‘the extra mile’ to India. During the three day exhibition the UK Sotheby’s International Realty team attended private meetings with clients to discuss the bespoke service we offer, educated visitors to the stand on property buying process in Britain and showcased the real estate currently for sale as well as attended Sotheby’s cocktail party. A highlight of the visit was being hosted by Manjeet Bullar, India’s most famous interior designer who is looking to relocate to the UK and meeting Harmeet Bajaj, India’s answer to Richard Caring who owns 38 luxurious restaurants in Delhi, with whom the company has forged a long term business relationship.

UP THE CHERRIES FROM THE RELEGATION ZONE TO PROMOTION WINNERS IN JUST OVER SIX MONTHS, THE IMPACT OF EDDIE HOWE AND JASON TINDALL AT AFC BOURNEMOUTH HAS BEEN LITTLE SHORT OF MIRACULOUS. Having come agonisingly close to promotion in recent years, a disappointing start to the 2012/13 season left the Cherries languishing in 21st place, and it looked set to be a season of missed opportunities once again. While the pessimists came out in force, those within the Cherries hierarchy - who had spoken of their desire to propel the club into the second tier for so long - were working their magic. And on Saturday 10th October their efforts came to fruition, as 18 months after a heart-breaking departure to Burnley, Eddie Howe and Jason Tindall walked back through the doors at the Goldsands Stadium.

79

After an incredible 18-match unbeaten run, the atmosphere around the club had lifted. Howe and Tindall - who had together achieved such great things during their previous spell at the club - had got the Cherries’ promotion charge back on track. And after a mini-winter-wobble had hearts in mouths, the duo pulled off a record-breaking eight match winning streak to secure a historic promotion to English football’s second tier. As planning for life in the Championship begins, it seems like an eternity rather than seven months, since the Cherries’ most successful management duo of all time settled back into the hot-seat at the Goldsands Stadium. “When I saw that Paul and Shaun had unfortunately lost their jobs, my immediate reaction was disappointment because I wanted to see the club and everyone within it do well - there was certainly no thought process of mine that we would be coming back,” Howe explains, reflecting upon the pair’s move back down south. “It all happened very quickly in the end. An approach was made to Burnley and my initial thought was one of huge surprise, but the longer I thought about it the more it made sense, and myself and Jason were very keen on coming back. “It certainly wasn’t just the one discussion – it was a big decision for both of us to make, for our families and at the time we were at a Championship club, a year and a half into a project we had set out to do,” Tindall adds. “There were a lot of people we had to think about – the players at Burnley, our families, and what impact it might have upon our career.”

80

// NEVER IN OUR WILDEST DREAMS DID WE EVER IMAGINE THAT WE WOULD GET AUTOMATIC PROMOTION WITH ONE GAME STILL REMAINING

\\

Jason Tindall

With their families and the people closest to them clearly a residing factor in their decision, for Howe there was an additional lure to Dorset.

coming back, we wanted that happiness to remain and my biggest fear was that happiness would quickly turn to, ‘why has he come back?’

“For me personally there was a huge pull back here. As everyone knows I lost my mum very suddenly and that had a huge effect on me and my family, and with the majority of my family based here I was coming back regularly to check people were alright.

“People in life say that you should never go back and to look forward – we were really aware of all those negative emotions that can go with returning.

“It was such a huge life changing event for me that the more I thought about it and the consequences for my family, it was a decision I just had to try and push to make happen.

“So immediately when we stepped through the door it was a case of, ‘right, we have got to make this work and we have got to be successful because otherwise we will quickly find we won’t be as welcome anymore’.

“Sometimes your career prospects have to take a backwards step. The most important thing for me was to make sure those closest to me were happy, and that’s eventually what pushed me to make that decision.” So whilst the critics branded them mad for opting to drop down into the third tier once more, Howe and Tindall quietly planned another revolution at Dean Court. Having already performed the ‘great escape’ in 2009, securing the club’s Football League status despite a 17-point deduction, and then achieving promotion to League One a season later, the expectations were high. And whilst admitting that was a concern, Howe reaffirms that promotion was never expected of them initially. “The biggest fear for me was that we weren’t going to replicate the success we experienced the first time,” he admits. “As much as everyone was happy we were

81

// WHEN WE ARRIVED HERE AND SAW THE ABILITY IN THE SQUAD, WE KNEW WE HAD SOME VERY TALENTED PLAYERS THAT COULD DO WELL

\\

82

Jason Tindall

“There wasn’t talk of promotion this season. There was talk of ambition and trying to take the club forward, and a definite aim to get promoted next season was the brief.”

And Howe’s confidence was justified as a 1-0 victory at Stevenage in early March spawned the start of yet another impressive run – culminating in one of the greatest days in the club’s history.

“So for this season, the target was to was consolidate, get the team mid-table and then to push next year to try and get in the Championship.”

A 3-1 victory over Carlisle United on Saturday 20th April marked the return of the Cherries to the second tier for only the second time in the club’s 114-year history.

“We always said if we felt we could get into the play offs, maybe on the last day if we could sneak into the top six or be around the top six, we would view that as a success.” “When we arrived here and saw the ability in the squad, we knew we had some very talented players that could do well,” Tindall adds. “We take it game by game and never look too far ahead of ourselves.” “Then we went on the incredible unbeaten run and eventually as our results continued, other teams started to slip up and we started to get a little bit closer. But never in our wildest dreams did we ever imagine that we would get automatic promotion with one game still remaining.” October to January was a whirlwind for the Cherries as they flew to the previously unthinkable heights of the top half of the League One table. The torrid opening two months of the season, when the side had accumulated just 10 points from a possible 33, was all but a distant memory. Whilst the side looked set to soar into the Championship with ease, a run of five consecutive defeats between February and March left the Cherries faithful wondering if it was set to be another case of ‘what if ’. However, one man at least remained confident they would turn it around. “I’m really thinking honestly what I said in the interviews,” Howe reiterates. “If we had played poorly in the whole of those five games, I’d probably be concerned, but we deserved to win the three home games so that gave me confidence that we’d turn it around.”

“I didn’t really celebrate within myself until I saw the Brentford result at Hartlepool to know that mathematically, whatever happened regardless of goal difference, it was guaranteed,” Howe explains. “But even now I don’t think it has really sunk in yet. Things happen so quickly in football - as soon as one game is over, you’re on to the next game. As soon as one season is over you’re on to the next season so our minds are already on next year.” “You don’t get a chance to savour the moment, but it’s got to be our best achievement in management without a doubt. I never thought anything would come close to Grimsby and the ‘great escape’ but this certainly does. I think in time we will look back on it really fondly.” For now though, while the rest of Dorset spend the summer celebrating their side’s return to the country’s second division, the management duo are already making plans to ensure they remain there. “Immediately our eyes are now on pre-season and making sure our structure to the schedule is right,” Howe says.” “Of course we also have transfer targets, looking at ways we can improve the squad. And we are speaking to players about the seasons they’ve had and giving them off-season plans to go home with.” “There is lots of stuff going on to make sure we are as organised and as good as we can be off the pitch, for another hopefully successful season on it.” Words: Kelly Somers Images: Seeker News

“During those games, the footballing gods were doing their bit, trying to keep us grounded and trying to make it interesting I think.”

EDDIE MITCHELL NEVER LOOKING BACK WHEN EDDIE MITCHELL TOOK THE REIGNS AT AFC BOURNEMOUTH, HE ALWAYS KNEW LIFE AS CHAIRMAN OF A FOOTBALL LEAGUE CLUB WOULDN’T BE A WALK IN THE PARK. BUT THREE YEARS AND 11 MONTHS ON, HAS HE ACHIEVED WHAT HE SET OUT TO ACCOMPLISH?

June 22nd 2013 marks the fourth anniversary of the Eddie Mitchell led consortium taking over at Dean Court. With the Cherries saved from relegation from the Football League by the skin of their teeth just months previously, after suffering a 17-point deduction due to the club’s mis-managed finances, Mitchell had quite a task on his hands to drag the ailing club back into the black. In his first season he experienced jubilation, nursing the club back into the third tier of English football at the first time of asking. The scenes at Burton Albion were a million miles away from the barren years of administration and desperation. Mitchell and AFC Bournemouth then came a whisker away from back-to-back promotions. After losing Eddie Howe and Jason Tindall to Burnley midway through the season, Mitchell appointed from within, and Steve Fletcher and Lee Bradbury almost guided the squad through to the play-off final. Then came a season of rebuilding and regeneration, on and off the field. Big players left, but some important players were signed, with Charlie Daniels, Simon Francis and Steve Cook all joining the club permanently in January 2012. Although the finish wasn’t spectacular, the foundations were being laid and the Cherries were just 12 months from glory. “I have found it a privilege to be chairman,” Mitchell says. “Since I have been at the club I wouldn’t have changed a day; maybe one or two of the results, but apart from that every day has been a pleasure to be here.” “I thought I must be mad for getting involved, and a lot of people told me I was. But since walking into the club, everyday has been a blessing and has been enjoyment through and through, even in the bad times.” “It has been hard work but that’s nothing new to me. The people around me and the people involved with the football club off the pitch thrive on that type of environment, so we are looking forward to even more hard work.” “I am pleased with the progress since I’ve been here, but I don’t feel anywhere near that we’re at the end of the road yet. If we can achieve what we have achieved in the last four years, in the next four years, then I think my job will be well underway.” That is quite a statement from a man that has just propelled the Cherries into the second tier of English football for only the second time in the club’s 114year history.

As a season, 2012/13 began in earnest in October, when Mitchell pulled-off what seemed unachievable, luring Eddie Howe and Jason Tindall back to the club after 18 months at Championship Burnley.

The fruits of their labour were realised this spring, after an incredible run of form from Eddie Howe’s men catapulted the Cherries to the top of the pile with a handful of games remaining.

Howe and his assistant had achieved remarkable success in their first spell on the South Coast, and with both regarded heroes at Dean Court, Mitchell had taken criticism for allowing them to leave in the first place.

After a brief wobble that had supporters on the edge of their seats, the Cherries romped to eight straight victories and secured promotion to the Championship.

“I don’t think I could have done anything more to keep him. At the time, he (Howe) had out-grown the club. Now the club has managed to catch him up, hopefully we can go forward together for a long time.” “Not wishing to advertise Eddie, but his strengths are very good and he is going to go further. I think I knew that we would have to prosper to ever stand the chance of getting him back.” And prosper the Cherries did. Mitchell unveiled Maxim Demin as his co-owner in October 2011, and welcomed a determined, driven and intelligent friend and confidante into life at the top of a football club. Improvement at the club since Demin’s arrival has been tangible, with new training facilities built on-site in Kings Park, attracting a finer calibre of player to the seaside town. Work on developing the Goldsands Stadium as a venue and not just a football ground is ongoing, with a champagne lounge and car park realised, and a Club Store expansion nearing completion. Although the Russian businessmen avoids the limelight and keeps a low profile on matchdays, his dedication and guidance is immeasurable. “Max has had a tremendous impact. I feel somewhat that I have taken a lot of the limelight away from Max, but his involvement and his contributions in finance, thought and decision making has been tremendous.” “It would be great for me to have him celebrating our achievements alongside me, but he is a family man, a business man and likes to keep himself to himself. I admire him for that.” “I didn’t bring him into the club, he asked me if he could get involved. I don’t think his thoughts or his input financially would have been accepted by myself if I didn’t think he was the right person to get involved.” “It just materialised because our beliefs and our determination to succeed gelled really well from day one, and it has worked brilliantly.”

With the dust settled on a season never to be forgotten, and hard work already underway for life in the second tier, where the Cherries will host the likes of Leeds, Nottingham Forest and Birmingham City, has Eddie Mitchell proved himself to those who said he was ‘mad’ to take over at AFC Bournemouth? Has he proved himself to the doubters who have plagued his tenure at the top? “Whether I have changed peoples’ perceptions of me I don’t know, but of the football club itself? Maybe.” “My view of the football club was that it was used for a long time, for individuals’ benefits rather than the club as a whole. I think I have been able to give the club a direction, a strength and a determination that I think this club lacked, and many other clubs in the Football League lack.” “You need a strong leader and you need a direction and that’s really what I have done. Whether people think better of me for doing it is another thing.” And with Mitchell set to celebrate his fifth season at the helm in long unmarked territory, what does the future hold for a club currently experiencing such a steep ascent? “The club is on a forward motion,” the chairman continues. “We all believe in what we are doing and we all have the energy and determination to go as far as possible.” “I would like to see the club sustain its future for a long period of time and play a good level of football. I think that is all you can ask from any club.” “At times clubs have to roll the dice to try to get that little bit further, and sometimes it goes wrong. We have to be very sensible about how many times we roll that dice and that is something we want to give a lot a lot of thought to.” “We want to make AFC Bournemouth sustainable for the future, so it will go on for another 114 years for the people of this town to enjoy.”

THE HISTORY OF CHAMPAGNE THE FIRST WINE WAS MADE IN CHAMPAGNE ABOUT 2,000 YEARS AGO.

Champagne was already famous in the middleage. But it was not the same wine we use to drink these days. At that time, wine was red or white not sparkling, quite similar to wine from Burgundy. People used barrels to ship their wines. They noticed that the next Spring season following the harvest, the wine tended to foam. It was not good for business. The first Champagne was made in the 17th century. A monk called Dom Perignon was the first to understand the process of Champagne fermentation and to elaborate the process. He managed to mix red and white grapes from different villages and therefore perfected the way winemakers at that time used to produce sparkling wine. Nowadays, Champagne is a festive wine. AFC Bournemouth now have a huge selection of top house champagnes for you to celebrate Championship style.

ENGLAND DISTILLED, ICELAND CHILLED FROM AN OBSESSION FOR CRAFTING THE PERFECT GIN TO THE INSPIRED MADNESS OF BLENDING IT TO STRENGTH WITH ICELANDIC SPRING WATER, MARTIN MILLER’S GIN HAS BECOME A BRITISH BUILT, INTERNATIONAL SUCCESS STORY.

Born of love, obsession and a degree of madness, Martin Miller’s passion for creating the best gin money could buy became a reality in 1999, 18 long months after he first sat down with two friends in a Notting Hill pub and announced that he wanted to make his own. Gazing into their very sad looking G&Ts and limp lemon slices, and bemoaning the parlous state of gins available, the trio discussed how good a gin they could make if they placed no practical, fiscal or even geographical limitations on its creation. By the end of a long and liquid lunch Martin had persuaded them to take a stab at making the best possible gin money could buy, with the only downside being left lots of very expensive gin to drink if things didn’t work out. For Martin Miller, British iconoclast and author of the famous Miller’s Antique Price Guide and owner of Miller’s hotel chain, his mission was clear. To re-invent the quintessentially British tipple, shed its ‘old man and spinsters’ image, challenge the woeful examples being poured into G&Ts in almost every pub in Britain and get good gin back into the glasses of discerning drinkers. During those 18 painstaking months the trio experienced a steep learning curve, trying out endless combinations of distilling processes and botanical ingredients. Then, either by design or what Martin calls “stumbling around in the dark” (probably a bit of both), the world’s first super premium gin was born. 92

Martin’s obsession with every last detail of recipe, quality of ingredients, distilling processes and sheer madness by insisting they use Icelandic water has led to an exceptional and clearly differentiated product. Credited as pioneers of the new, super premium gin movement and with only the usual suspects for company when they started out (Gordon’s, Beefeater, Bombay Sapphire and the like) he and his friends hit the mark with disillusioned gin drinkers craving something better from their spirit. With a solid fan base that travels in search of the brand and mixologists and bar staff the world over that make it their gin of preference, the team’s modern take on a British classic has become the most awarded of all the super-premium gins, possibly all gins since its inception. Globally they are the fastest growing super premium gin, exporting across the world and encouraging a swathe of new wave gins to follow in their footsteps, many of these with labels promising a smorgasbord of exotic ingredients. But Martin Miller steers clear of the gin exotica, preferring to keep to traditional ingredients and production methods – something that lets the gin taste like gin, just very, very good gin.

93

The formula the team settled on was at once ‘back to basics’ and old-fashioned, yet with a ‘twist’ unique in the world of gin making. Martin Miller’s starts its journey at the Langley Distillery in the heart of the Black Country where ‘Angela’, their century-old gem of a copper pot still, is the real star of the show. Unlike all but a handful of gins, Martin Miller’s is batched distilled, like Malt Whisky, using a traditional pot still method – time consuming but, for gin production, unrivalled. Quality of ingredients, skilled distillers and traditional craftsmanship all combine to create the gin’s famous and multi award-winning taste and aroma. Uniquely, Martin Miller’s employs two separate distillations – one for the juniper and earthy botanicals and one for the citrus peels – this gives greater infusion and clarity of flavour that can’t be achieved in conventional gin distillation. Both batches of botanicals are then distilled separately using the highest grade grain spirit base. In the process of distilling they keep only the ‘heart’ of the spirit run and discard the heads and tails (the low quality beginning and end of the run). All other gin makers redistill this low grade spirit. Whereas all other gins are blended to bottling strength using processed, de-mineralized water, Martin Miller’s departs by boat on a unique trip to Iceland to be blended with the purest, unprocessed spring water which guarantees the gin’s freshness and smoothness, and coveted silky smooth texture and mouth feel. 94

Aware of its near magical qualities in taming raw alcohol, Martin Miller insists on its use and it is here in the village of Borganes that it is bottled on an eco-line powered by Iceland’s famous geothermal energy and then 10 days later is shipped back to England or on to its many destinations around the world; as Martin say’s “By happy accident, Iceland is on the way to nowhere, but halfway to everywhere.” The botanicals recipe is a taste feast too – familiar juniper, coriander, angelica, and orris root (also known as Florentine Iris) coupled with the more unusual cassia, cinnamon bark, and liquorice. The citrus elements are bitter Seville orange peel and lime. The first gin to use cucumber in it’s recipe, it is used in very small quantities not as a botanical in the classic sense, but as ‘functional ingredient’ giving Martin’s gin its characteristic long, dry and fresh finish and is added during the blending process. In keeping with Martin Miller’s passion for good design, inspiration for the simple, modern bottle comes from an antique fragrance bottle they had found with a three-faceted front and domed back. England and Iceland are integral to the Martin Miller’s story and the Icelandic water a critical element in its success, not just a gimmick, so the label importantly shows the journey between the two countries. They use crystal clear glass and, whilst spanning two countries in its development, the gin remains very much a British brand, so

much so that glass production has just been brought back to a UK manufacturer. Kicking off the ‘Gin Renaissance’ in 1999, many super premium gins have followed Martin Miller’s suit, a small handful of them artisans who deserve the label but many more that sadly don’t. Keen to distance himself from the ‘one man in a shed’ image (Martin is not keen on the ‘artisan’ soubriquet) his one-man crusade for good gin, and his journey of discovery, took many months to create. Along the way he used only the finest craftsmen distillers and ‘gin noses’ in his recipe’s development and as a result has been credited with pulling gin back from the brink of total obscurity. A genuine character and true British gentleman, he lives and breathes his product, making him far more than just a name on a bottle. With no advertising behind them and still proudly independent, he and his friends have created a super gin worthy of the title and with a following that has grown purely organically into a worldwide phenomenon, distributed and enjoyed in quality bars throughout Europe, the emerging Asian countries, the United States and South America. Set to sell 1 million bottles this year, this British export success story is based solely on the reputation and credibility their gin carries. www.martinmillersgin.com

MWAH SIMONE THOMAS, OWNER OF M.W.A.H BOURNEMOUTH TALKS TO HOT MAGAZINE ABOUT WHAT IT WAS LIKE TO OPEN HER FIRST SALON AND THE PLANS FOR THE FUTURE.

Hi Simone, It’s been an amazing 11 months for you at M.W.A.H; tell us what’s been happening. I opened my first salon M.W.A.H (Make Up, Wigs & Hair, and Beauty) in Westbourne in June 2012, and it’s been an absolute whirlwind! My feet have not touched the ground since. When I opened the doors and accepted the first customer we were a team of three, now we have expanded to a team of 9. I am amazed at how busy we have become in such a short space of time. So tell us, what prompted you to open M.W.A.H? When I was younger I suffered with hair loss, and being a model at the time my hair was very important to me. I had to find a way to hide my hair loss but when I started to investigate I found there was very little information available. The wigs were pretty tacky and the hair extensions on offer at the time did little to protect the hair I did have. From that moment onwards I made it my mission to one day help people in the same predicament that I found myself in. I guess that’s when the seed for M.W.A.H was planted. Over time I trained as a Master in Hair Loss in London, where I still regularly work from their salon one day a week. I am able to help my clients in that part of the country that are unable to travel to Bournemouth. I also found a fantastic wig supplier, who I work very closely with and together we design wigs and hair pieces. Working with so many clients who need these products, helps me to work closely with the designers to make custom pieces, and to also know what styles potential clients are looking for. This enables M.W.A.H to offer only the best top quality human hair wigs, hair pieces, custom made wigs and toupees, and great quality mono fibre wigs. To see clients – men, women and children, who suffer hair loss whether through alopecia, cancer, stress or burns smile and grow in confidence when they walk out of M.W.A.H really is humbling. It makes all the hard work and long hours worth it! So, you started with a team of 3 and now have a team of 9, tell us what you and your staff specialise in? I have a fantastic Aestheitc Therapist in Skin Peels and DermaRoller. Danielle is also a Dermalogica Beauty Specialist and was one of the first 10 people in the country to attain her Dermalogica credentials, and her skills and expertise are priceless. Her knowledge is extensive and I am lucky to have her on 122

board. Our client base is growing by the day. I also have another makeup artist, like me, to help with the wedding make up and prom bookings. It’s also allowed us to do more hen parties and spa packages, and more makeup training sessions, her vision is fantastic and cutting edge. We also have an award winning nail technician who has a celebrity client list; bookings in advance are highly recommended! All my hair team have been trained in London with regards to our Transformations Connections Hair Extension System. At last there is finally a hair extension technique that is suitable for all people, especially those who suffer hair loss issues. We also offer the PerfecTress Hair Volumizer System, which is revolutionary and completely undetectable, you can even go swimming and no one would ever know you have hair loss issues. We also have a weekly clinic with a fully licensed and trained in house doctor to offer Botox and dermal fillers etc. Bookings for these clinics are also highly recommended. So the future is looking bright for M.W.A.H, what is next? I am due to open in April a M.W.A.H salon at The Lewis Manning Hospice offering their patients free cuts, blow dry’s, advice/styling and a collection of wigs, manicures and pedicures. The salon is fully funded by myself and I am very honoured to off been asked to help them. My staff and I will work there on a weekly basis offering free services to any of their patients. Lewis Manning is a fantastic hospice and we are looking forward to working with them. Further details will be announced a long with a press launch and launch day. I also have plans and currently in discussions for a premise to expand M.W.A.H and open a specialist hair centre in Bournemouth this year. The enquiries I am getting and the work I am doing with local charities has only highlighted to me that there is a far greater need than I had first thought, and I need additional space in which to help these clients. I recently read an article that said there were over 8 million women suffering hair loss in the UK and many suffer in silence with their confidence eroding because they don’t know where to get help from. Hair loss through various reasons such as Trichotillomania, Telogen Effuvium, Chemotherapy, Radiotherapy, pregnancy hair loss and Psoriasis to name but a few. I want to help these people; I know what it’s like to lose your hair because I was once in that very same predicament. We work very hard at M.W.A.H to rebuild that lost confidence and bring back that smile!

Available in more than 750 stores across Australia, DOGUE has grown from a high-end dog boutique in Sydney to a household name over the last 15 years. GWYNETH HAVING REPRISED HER ROLE AS FLAME-HAIRED PEPPER POTTS IN IRON MAN 3, GWYNETH PALTROW TALKS TO HOT ABOUT GETTING OLDER, HER GROWING EMPIRE AND WHY SHE CONSIDERS CO-STAR ROBERT DOWNEY JR A WIMP..

126

Gwyneth Paltrow was recently hailed ‘most hated celebrity in Hollywood’, beating the likes of Anne Hathaway and Kristen Stewart to the dubious title. The accolade, if you can call it that, does seem a little harsh given that (bar the tearful Oscar acceptance speech way back in 1999 and a rumoured desire for depriving her children of carbs) the girl has done nothing to warrant such animosity. Perhaps it’s her predisposition to do annoyingly well at anything she turns her hand to. There are the indie films (Sliding Doors, The Royal Tenenbaums, Sylvia), the singing (Glee, Country Strong), the lifestyle website Goop and subsequent cook books and the news that she’s set to star opposite Antonio Banderas in the Spanish film 33 Dias. She is of course fluent. All this and she still manages to boast a gym-honed body and the picture-perfect family in the shape of Coldplay’s Chris Martin and their two children Apple, eight, and seven-year-old Moses. You just don’t want to like Paltrow - but then you come face to face with the Hollywood actress and she seems really rather sweet, nervous even. She might not relish interviews but needs must when there’s a movie of mega proportions such as Iron Man 3 to promote. In this third instalment of the franchise, she returns as redhead Pepper Potts opposite Robert Downey Jr’s billionaire-inventor-superhero Tony Stark, aka Iron Man.

She hadn’t even heard of Marvel’s Iron Man until the actor Jon Favreau approached her with the idea in 2007. “I’d taken a few years off and was at home having kids, and there was no script so I was really flying blind,” recalls the actress, who divides her time between London and the States. “I didn’t know anything about comics or the movie we were going to do but Robert and Jon talked me into doing it.” She admits she’d never thought of herself starring in a comic book superhero movie “and now I’m so glad it’s been my main job for the last six years”. This is the first movie that’s technically a sequel to two films (Iron Man 2 and The Avengers Assemble) and places Iron Man and Pepper, who’s now his live-in girlfriend and the CEO of Stark Enterprises, opposite super-powered humans.

“There’s a lot of comfort between them now, so it’s not the kind of tentative relationship they had in the first two films,” says Paltrow, who’s understandably grown close to Downey Jr over the last six years. “Robert and I have always had a really great working relationship and it’s nice to phase it into something new,” she says, before adding: “Robert definitely keeps you on your toes.” You sense Paltrow’s no walkover and she jokingly berates her co-star for moaning about the Iron Man costume. “Robert used to complain about it all the time but let me just tell you he is a wuss because it’s very easy to wear,” says the actress, who also dons the iconic suit this time round. “I really liked being in it. It felt very superhero-ish, very strong,” she says, laughing.

127

// Iron Man 3 boasts everything you’d hope from a summer blockbuster, a stellar cast including Sir Ben Kingsley and Guy Pearce, eye-popping action sequences and brilliant special effects. Even Paltrow was impressed with the final result, having watched it the night before with her family and friends. “Everybody loved it, including myself. I was really surprised,” she says. While each movie in the franchise has been “great in its own way”, Paltrow reveals she had the most fun shooting this one. “Pepper really steps into her power this time. She’s incredibly strong at work, you see her really as an equal partner with Tony and then she gets involved in all sorts of action so this one was the most fun in terms of where she is in her life.” Like any businesswoman worth her salt, Pepper can work a power suit and Paltrow, who’s known for her red carpet style, had a long meeting with the costume department about achieving the right look. “Any time you put me in a Tom Ford suit I’m very happy,” says Paltrow, looking slender in a printed black and white dress and fierce five-inch black heels. In the flesh, she’s as you’d expect, all glowing skin, barely there make-up and poker straight blonde hair. It’s incredible to think she turned 40 in September. 128

I DIDN’T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT COMICS OR THE MOVIE WE WERE GOING TO DO BUT ROBERT AND JON TALKED ME INTO DOING IT

\\

“When I was 39 I was freaking out about it but when I woke up on my birthday I was like, ‘Oh this is fine, yeah I like this,” she says, smiling. “I felt empowered by everything that I’d achieved and I have two healthy children.” It doesn’t hurt that she’s in such good shape, and she gets to show off her washboard stomach in the movie. A devotee of personal trainer Tracy Anderson, who she met through Madonna (before the actress and singer fell out), did she feel the urge to take her training up a notch in preparation? “The real answer to that is no,” she admits. “I work out all the time and my trainer’s really strict with me and I’m very disciplined about it.” Photography Theo Kingma/Rex Features

The daughter of the late producer Bruce Paltrow and actress Blythe Danner, Paltrow was 19 when she made her screen debut alongside John Travolta in Shout. But it was a role in Se7en four years later, and her ensuing relationship with co-star Brad Pitt that propelled her to stardom. While she and Martin are notoriously private, her ‘celebrity’ was key to the 2008 launch of Goop, a website ‘to share all of life’s positives’ as it states on its homepage. It was met with the sort of eye-rolling saved solely for celebrity-endorsed projects, but Paltrow has proven the naysayers wrong. “I was really just doing it for fun and to share information. I really didn’t know that it would end up having so many subscribers and such a big audience. It’s really thrilling for me,” says Paltrow. “I love women and I love to create a community for women and it’s been such a rewarding experience to do it.” In recent years, Paltrow has spent less time on the big screen but she isn’t tempted to give up acting to focus solely on a business empire. “You know, I really like the balance I have now in finding one really interesting film a year to do around the family schedule and my business life,” she says. “I don’t think I’d ever want to give up acting to only do business but I’m very stimulated by my website.” Looking ahead to “the second half of my life”, she hopes to continue this comfortable pace “I’m really happy at home, so I’ve got to find things where I’m really going to learn something or push myself to the edge of my capabilities.” And really, that’s no reason to be criticised.

A DAY IN THE LIFE... A BREAKFAST JOCK THE GUY WHOSE VOICE YOU HEAR ON THE HOT BREAKFAST LIVES A STRANGE LIFE.

Paul Stevens gets up at 4.30 to provide the soundtrack to your morning, sprinkled with local news every half hour, local travel every 20 minutes, plus information and chat about what’s going on in your world. So, what’s Paul’s morning like? I’d best let him explain. “I think Dolly Parton said it best: ‘I tumble outta bed and stumble to the kitchen. Pour myself a cup of ambition…’ Only instead of working Nine to Five, I work from five to nine!” “While you’re snoring away (you know you snore, don’t you?) I’m still in the kitchen (on my second cup of ambition) checking out the latest stories for Hot Off the Press at 7.10am, my round up of the morning’s front pages.” “Next, I investigate what else in the news I can talk about (I was a journalist for more than 20 years before this so I’m naturally nosey!).” “Maybe something’s happened to me or someone I know I can talk about? Maybe something wound me up? And what’s going to be happening in Poole and Bournemouth? (For the local sport I rope in Jordan the news guy: he knows all about that sort of stuff. Me? Not so much!).” “I like to sneak in a “haven’t heard that in ages” song every day so I find an artist whose birthday it is and put a song by them on at 7.35. That way it’s totally random and I have very little control over what it is (although I did reject Nick Berry and Little Jimmy Osmond in favour of Gabrielle recently: I do have some standards!)” “Then there’s Hot Stuff at 8.15, a chance to win something fabulous: like AFC Bournemouth tickets for the whole family; Hot Radio goodies; a big night out; a free meal; or something adventurous (zorbing anyone?)”. 130

“It’s all topped off with My Favourite Waste of Time just before 9am, something funny or strange to watch online before starting work. Recent videos include a man who solves a Rubik cube while juggling it and the footballer who took a penalty but somehow managed to kick the ball backwards!” “By the time I’ve organised all that it’s time to drive to the studio, listening to Hot Radio of course!” “It still feels a bit odd sometimes, standing in a studio by myself, playing music and talking into a microphone. But when the texts, emails and phone calls come in – and when I call a competition winner each day – it’s great to know we’ve got a growing audience across Poole and Bournemouth who love what Hot Radio’s doing.” “At 9am, just as most people are beginning their day, I’m pretty much done with mine. But don’t think my work is done: I’ve got a day job… teaching radio!” So there you have it, that’s how Paul rolls. Join him every weekday from 6am-9am and he’ll serve you up a Hot Breakfast.

RISING FROM THE ASHES

IT’S BEEN A CHALLENGING YEAR FOR IAIN ROBERTSON, HEADMASTER OF BUCKHOLME TOWERS SCHOOL AND NURSERY, BUT WE CATCH UP WITH HIM FEELING THRILLED ABOUT THE PROSPECT OF A BRAND NEW SCHOOL WITH A VERY BRIGHT FUTURE.

How did your own school differ from how you see Buckholme Towers school today ? My school was very different to Buckholme Towers. It was a state school, with some 400 pupils. Classes were large, with around 30 children in each. I wasn’t a naturally hardworking young man, so the large class afforded me the opportunity to keep my head down and to ‘cruise’. Classes at Buckholme Towers average around 14 pupils, so there is no hiding! But truth to tell, Buckholme pupils don’t want or need to hide. Their successes are celebrated at every level and opportunity; it’s cool to do well and achieve. The small environment and high ratios of adults to pupils, mean that all the pupils know each other and all the teachers know all the pupils. Furthermore, each teacher knows the expectations of every child. And, I can assure you, those expectations are high. What have been your highs and lows in the last year as Headmaster? Every day at Buckholme Towers produces highs. It may be a concert at Christmas, or the B Factor talent show, or a class assembly, or simply a pupil achieving beyond expectations. I try to spend as much time as possible in the classrooms, so that I have a firm handle on how each child is 132

performing. I also make myself very accessible to all pupils. They know they can come and find me any time they like; they might want to celebrate something with me, or maybe they have something they want to comment on or tell me about. My study is a busy place! As for lows, well, the fire hit everybody hard. Not just current parents, staff and pupils, but 73 years’ worth of parents, staff and pupils, it seemed! The strength of feeling around the community was also quite humbling. It is a small school with a very big heart and many, many people were shocked and saddened by the event. Now, of course, we are looking forward to the next 73 years in our brand new school. What advice would you give a new pupil starting at Buckholme? I would encourage them to embrace all the opportunities that present themselves, and there will be many. Whether it’s on the sports field or in the classroom, or on the stage, or even in a boat, it is vital that they rise to the challenges that school life presents; reward comes from trying your best. New pupils quickly learn the enjoyment that comes from being part of a culture of individual success and achievement.

What have you learnt from your own school experiences that you have brought to Buckholme Towers as a Headmaster? I have learned that unless children are happy, they will not learn. Buckholme Towers is a very safe environment, where children are made to feel they can really contribute and make a difference. Boundaries are clear, so behavioural issues are very rare. Children know that there is always someone to turn to if they have worries. The school is like a family, where everyone knows each other and everyone looks out for each other. The school motto is ‘Happiness through education, education through happiness’ and this underpins our whole ethos. How important are class sizes? Our small classes are one of the main things that attract parents to Buckholme. Year on year state schools are forced to increase their class sizes, sometimes with up to 34 pupils in each, with around 150 in a year group. I would seriously question whether or not pupils receive the individual attention they need to succeed, in such an environment. At Buckholme, the average class size is around 14. This means pupils get all the attention they need to achieve their potential, whatever that may be.

The vast majority of our pupils go on to local grammar schools, but they are not for everyone. We work closely with parents to ensure that each child achieves a place at the right school for him or her. What would you say to any prospective parents looking for a school ? I would urge parents to come and have a look at everything that Buckholme has to offer; our fees of around ÂŁ6000 per annum are well within the budget of many families in the area. The prospect of a brand new school is very exciting. It will still have the warmth and character of the old building, but it will be more eco-friendly, efficient and user-friendly, with better facilities throughout. While Music, Art and Science will all benefit from the refurbishment, it is in the area of IT where pupils will benefit most and on a daily basis. Children in every classroom will have PCs and laptops at their fingertips, along with touch screen technology, in the form of iPads and interactive LED whiteboards. IT will be a thread that runs through every subject. This is the future and it is very exciting.

Many employers, especially within the construction sector, currently hold a belief that there are plenty of candidates proactively looking for work. This may be the case but the most important question you should be asking is “Are these candidates right for my business?” With over a decade’s experience in recruiting specialist roles, Quantum Recruitment have noticed a serious trend in high achievers being retained by their current employers. These companies have positioned themselves well, communicating their ability to survive in difficult times as well as demonstrating growth during the recession. However it is very evident, by the amount of construction that has continued during the last few years, that the local

talent within the construction sector is very much thriving.

SO HOW SHOULD YOU ATTRACT THIS TALENT TO YOUR BUSINESS? By using a specialist agency, like Quantum Recruitment, you gain access to knowledge and experience that allows a greater match between the candidate and your corporate goals. Quantum Recruitment’s Managing Partner, Jacqueline Entwistle, says “Many candidates are not actively looking for work but armed with the knowledge of your business we are able to head hunt and use our extensive network within this sector to attract the right talent.”

OUTDOOR LIVING RELAXING AND ENTERTAINING OUTSIDE IS ONE OF THE SUMMER’S PLEASURES. Just saying ‘al fresco’ conjures images of informal gatherings and leisurely meals enjoyed outdoors, but it’s all about the setting. A dull space furnished with wobbly, uncomfortable furniture won’t encourage family and guests to linger, so it’s important to create a special ‘outdoor room’ where you can socialise and eat in style. There’s no excuse for a poor patio these days as the design and quality of outdoor furniture improves year on year, with an ever more versatile range including day beds and coffee tables as well as traditional dining sets and weather-resistant loungers. HOT Review

THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM WITH A RARE WEEKEND ON OUR HANDS WITHOUT A TODDLER TO ENTERTAIN WE RATHER EXCITEDLY PACKED OUR TRUNK AND SAID GOOD BYE TO THE CIRCUS, HEADING FOR THE ELEPHANT HOTEL AT PANGBOURNE. Much in need of some time to relax and unwind, this was the perfect destination to enjoy an evening of fine food and wine with the added luxury of no early wake up call to fear. We were warmly greeted on arrival and the manager was quickly on hand to personally welcome us. The hotel first opened in the late nineteenth century, but has recently undergone a complete refurbishment. The interior is now ‘quirky luxury’, an eccentric mix of styles with beautiful handcrafted Indian furniture, rich oriental rugs and an abundance of decorative elephants. The bedrooms were individually themed and we were booked into ‘The Charleston’, unfortunately that was as close as we got to any dancing during our stay. The room was spacious and light, equipped with all the essentials and even a complimentary organic elderflower vodka miniature which quickly vanished. The organic produce extended to the toiletries which were all made from sustainably sourced, natural ingredients reflecting the attention to detail throughout the hotel. Late in the afternoon the sun made a brief apperance so we were able to sit outside in the secret garden and enjoy a pot of tea and sample the local West Berkshire guest ales. Inside, the bar area was quickly filling up with guests and locals enjoying a drink and food from the more informal Babar menu. Having settled into the Charleston and freshened up it was time to head to the hotel restaurant, Christoph’s. Before being seated at our table we 144

\\ warm berry compote and iced raspberry parfait with honeycomb & raspberry sauce neither of which disappointed. All the dishes throughout the evening were beautifully presented and full of flavour, always tasting as good as they looked. On a warmer evening the garden booths would be ideal for a whisky and cigar but the complimentary truffle and liquor on offer was the perfect end to a delicious meal. We retired to our room and despite the crowds downstairs in the bar, enjoyed a very comfortable and quiet nights sleep. The following morning the nice powerful rain shower came to our rescue to wake us up. Breakfast was served in the dining room and we made good use of the continental buffet before we both indulged in the Elephant’s full english which was on a par with the previous evening meal. As we enjoyed our leisurely breakfast, reading the Saturday papers, staff were setting up for a wedding in the function room. The hotel would certainly be an ideal venue for any party or occasion to celebrate in style.

enjoyed pre-dinner drinks in the very comfortable lounge area, which provided a nice escape from the bustling bar. We perused the menu with particularly helpful and friendly assistance from the waiting staff. The dishes on offer had an innovative flair to simple, british cooking with the finest seasonal produce from local Berkshire suppliers. Despite a tempting selection of aperitifs on offer we opted to go straight to the wine menu ordering a light crisp Sauvignon Blanc from Valency, France and in contrast a full rounded red from the Il Faggio region of Italy. We were seated at our table just before our starters arrived. We had chosen the Smoked mackerel, beetroot salad & horseradish cream and the chefs special, Chicken parfait with a marmalade chutney which nicely wetted our appetitive for what was to follow. After a short pause we were then served our main course, roast new season lamb rump, spring onion & potato cake, glazed baby carrots & red wine jus and a Chargrilled 21 day aged Vicar’s Game sirloin steak, watercress, hand-cut chips & red wine jus which were both cooked to perfection. To round off the meal we enjoyed baked vanilla cheesecake,

Before checking out we took the opportunity to explore the local area, Pangbourne rests on the banks of the River Thames, and Pangbourne Meadow is a great walk next to the river only a couple of minutes from the hotel with stunning views of the wooded Chiltern Hills. Only a short drive up the road is Baseldon House, an impressive Georgian mansion, surrounded by glorious parkland worth exploring with more time available. It was soon time to head back to reality but at least we felt fully refreshed and revitalised after our stay. For a weekend trip, The Elephant ticks a lot of boxes, perfect for a relaxing break or alternatively a great base from which to visit many of the local attractions and events throughout the year, we definitely will be back. HARTNETT, HOLDER & CO AN EXCITING DEVELOPMENT AT LIMEWOOD, THE CHIC BOUTIQUE HOTEL IN THE HEART OF THE NEW FOREST COMES IN THE FORM OF AWARD-WINNING, MICHELINSTARRED CHEF ANGELA HARTNETT MBE, WHO HAD JOINED FORCES WITH LUKE HOLDER, LIME WOOD’S HEAD CHEF, TO CREATE A BRAND NEW RESTAURANT AT THE MUCH-CELEBRATED HOTEL Lime Wood’s new restaurant, Hartnett, Holder & Co, opened earlier this year in the hotel’s original David Collins-designed room, which has undergone an extensive makeover by Martin Brudnizki (Caprice, Corrigan’s, Hix, Sheekey’s, Oyster Bar). In creating this partnership, the team behind Lime Wood continues to put innovation at the top of its agenda. As one of Britain’s most successful, best-loved and busiest chefs, Angela needs no introduction. Her informal, grounded style of cooking with its Italian accent (courtesy of her Italian grandmother) will complement the fresh approach that Lime Wood’s new restaurant will bring to the country house dining room. Expect a relaxed yet confident service, in keeping with the overall style of Lime Wood and a far cry from the hushed, over fussed experience of the 80s and 90s. The restaurant is open seven days a week with an extensive menu of Italian-influenced forest dishes, pulling together both Hartnett’s and Holder’s much-admired signature styles. Relaxed brasserie-luxe service will show off the simple, yet carefully created dishes in a comfortable and unpretentious environment. Luke Holder says, “I’ve always been a fan of Angela’s food and am really excited to be working with her. We are already working together on dishes for the new restaurant it’s all coming together very well indeed. We’ve always shared the same culinary ethos coupled with a joint passion and a core influence from the Italian kitchen. Our plan is to make maximum use of the forest produce that is available literally on the doorstep.” www.limewoodhotel.co.uk 146

ENGLISH OAK VINEYARD

23,000 VINES, SOURCED FROM AROUND CHAMPAGNE NOW THRIVE IN THIS 23 ACRE VINEYARD

ESSENTIALLY, TWO PLANTS ARE SYNONYMOUS WITH WINE PRODUCTION, THE GRAPE VINE AND OF COURSE THE NOBLE OAK.

Both can be found just 6 miles from the centre of Poole, where Lytchett Matravers village sits comfortably in a picturesque landscape of attractive small valleys, open fields, thatched cottages, small oak woods and now a surprising delight to many, evocative avenues of grape vines.

A variety of 14 different Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay clones and rootstocks have been deliberately selected to emulate the complex and interesting blends which characterise the finest Champagnes and contribute something above the ordinary in English Oak’s exclusive character.

At the edge of the village, English Oak Vineyard, is dedicated to the production of quality English Sparkling Wine, from classic Champagne grape varieties, prepared faithfully by méthode traditionnelle.

The vineyard’s location, in the Purbeck region of the south coast, enjoys one of the most comfortable microclimates in the UK, with more than its fair share of sunshine and less than its fair share of rain. Shielded by oak lined hilltops and traditional country hedgerows, English Oak Vineyard blends beautifully into the English countryside, complimenting a perfect growing terroir with a rural location that’s ideal for an interesting visit or special occasion with a picturesque backdrop.

The picturesque vineyard surrounding a farmhouse, barn and stables dating back to the 17th century, is lined by numerous impressive oak trees from which it takes it’s name, the largest and most imposing of which is over 200 years old. 23,000 vines, sourced from around Champagne now thrive in this 23 acre vineyard’s fertile soil, produce delicious, crisp, lemon Chardonnays and warm, sensuously fragrant, smooth Pinots, lovingly blended to produce small quantities of English Sparkling Wine of exceptional quality.

156

The Stables at English Oak offers an unusual away from the office meeting venue for small groups, with optional guest speaker warm-ups to get your meeting off to an energised start or tailored training sessions which cover a wide variety of crucial business topics, all followed if appropriate by an interesting vineyard tour / wine tasting conclusion.

\\ On land that was previously lush pasture, the family of Sarah and Andrew Pharoah, with daughters Claudia and Amelia, planted the vineyard in 2007, taking inspiration from a chance meeting with a charismatic vineyard owner in the mountains of Cyprus. Building on Sarah’s previous experience in horticulture they qualified in viticulture at Plumpton College in Sussex, before contracting the experience and expertise of winemaker Dermot Sugrue to the team. Dermot’s well equipped winery, featured on the BBC’s Oz and James TV series, has the benefit of a traditional Coquard press, a type used extensively in Champagne to optimise quality, something that is a key part of English Oak’s commitment to produce only the best. Together, Dermot’s skills experience and reputation as a winemaker and Sarah’s excellent vineyard husbandry combine to create something truly special, lovingly and painstakingly crafted from the vine to the bottle, for your pleasure. englishoakvineyard.co.uk

ENGELMANN CUVEE 2009

CHINKAPIN ROSE 2009

The Engelmann Oak, from which this wine takes it’s name, grows 10m tall, is the northernmost species of subtropical oak and is evergreen.

The deciduous Chinkapin Oak, known for its sweet acorns, catches the eye with a classic rounded crown towering 50m tall. Crafted from the finest grapes grown in this boutique vineyard, Chinkapin Rose seductively demands equal attention, with a glamour derived from it’s distinctive blush signature.

Engelmann Cuvee is equally the perfect all year round sparkling accompaniment. From finest grapes grown in our boutique vineyard, strictly limited production blends classic Chardonnay’s citrus brightness and clarity, Pinot Noir’s spicy warmth and body and Pinot Meunier’s richness and charm. Elegant, young and vibrant, this beautifully drinkable wine opens with a warm golden colour and persistent bead of fine bubbles. To follow, the nose offers hints of warm summer meadows. Onto the palate its freshly cut green apple crumble, lime, gooseberry and early developing biscuity brioche notes, ending with a soft vanilla cream finish that exudes surprising depth and elegance for such a youthful wine. Perfect with anything, but perhaps we could suggest canapés, a warming soup, chicken or perhaps a parma ham entré.

Strictly limited production blends classic Chardonnay’s citrus brightness and clarity, Pinot Noir’s spicy warmth and body and Pinot Meunier’s richness and charm, to craft a lively yet balanced and elegant, creamy whole. Delicately pink in colour this beautifully elegant Rosé opens with streams of persistent tiny bubbles and a delightful light floral nose of bright berry fruit with a cheeky hint of cinnamon spice. Crafted by the traditional method from the classic Champagne varieties who’s cépage is Chardonnay 51%, Pinot Noir 16%, and Pinot Meunier 33%, the perfect balance of fruit, acids and subtle toastiness is achieved, with raspberries and cream, a hint of citrus, undertones of Pinot Noir spice and great length and complexity. Perfect for warm summer evenings and al fresco dining.

SAN GABRIEL BLANCS DE BLANC 2009 The San Gabriel oak thrives in cool clear crisp and light north American highland air. From the finest grapes grown in this boutique Purbeck vineyard, San Gabriel Blancs de Blanc occupies a similar high point, being crafted exclusively from Chardonnay grapes grown in the vineyard’s premier aspect. Strictly limited production exploits Chardonnay’s distinctive citrus brightness and clarity to create a light, lively yet delicate medium dry sparkling wine, Light, refreshing and balanced, the Chardonnay dominance in this beautifully elegant Blanc de Blancs brings a floral character to the nose, reflecting fresh lemons and subtle developing hints of biscuit. Crisp on the palate, with lemons, lime and baked apple fruit freshness. This wine offers a beautifully poised balance of fruit and acids, with a great length, clarity and youthful freshness and a big citrus bite, that’s a perfect accompaniment for fresh fish, an after dinner cheese board or even a tasty dessert.

TOY TOWN BROOKLYN BASED ARTIST HENRY HARGREAVES HAS TAKEN ALL THE FUN OUT OF A SERIES OF GAMES - BY PAINTING THEM ALL IN ONE COLOUR. Hargreaves has taken retro toys and games and blanked out their features with pastel hues. The 33-year-old New Zealander, now based in Brooklyn, says his ‘Game Over!’ project is a mixture of nostalgia and appreciating the classic pastimes as design classics. He has taken his brush to games including Battleship, Guess Who?, Connect 4 and chess. Henry explains: “Our generation has elevated the toys and games of childhood into heroic (or ironic) status. I wanted to strip away the colour, the fun and indeed the ability to play the games. To see the beautiful sculptural forms as standalone objects, separate from the meaning and memories that they evoke. For Game Over!, I literally painted all the objects and found matching set paper. I wanted to use a pastel palette as I find this palette evokes nostalgia for me.” “There were a couple of other games I tried that hit the editing room floor as they didn’t look too good - pick up sticks, monopoly.” Images: Henry Hargreaves/Rex Features

RECYCLING NEVER LOOKED SO GOOD AT REFORMED PLASTICS ALL OF THEIR PRODUCTS ARE MADE FROM 100% RECYCLED PLASTIC. THEY MANUFACTURE PRODUCTS THEMSELVES AND THEN SELL DIRECT TO THE DOMESTIC AND COMMERCIAL SECTOR.

Due to ever increasing importance to recycle & protect the environment, the products are made from 100% recycled plastic. The plastic used is recycled on-site and is the perfect alternative to wood. Our aims are to help rebuild the environment by utilizing a commodity, which people would otherwise just throw away, and so turn what to some would be rubbish into a valuable product for everybody. Plastic has many practical & very useful properties & has an infinite range of different uses, some of which being are as decking, fencing, outdoor furniture, planters, boardwalks, landscaping, bollards, signage & construction etc. The list of possibilities is endless and the long-term advantages it has over traditional materials are staggering! It’s a great investment, as it never needs to be replaced due to its high strength and durability, therefore it quickly pays for itself in the long run. In short, it’s worry free! They recycle plastic then manufacture goods from it, produce recycled plastic furniture for use in gardens and patios and retail recycled plastic products such as recycled plastic fencing and recycled plastic decking. The concept of Reformed Plastics was born over 10 years ago from the curiosity of its founder. Being an engineer by profession, and having had his own UPVC Windows business, and also being the practical and inquisitive person that he is, one day he decided to find out what was really happening to the waste that people were so freely throwing away. His research and interest lead him to focus on plastics, how it can be recycled and what it could be reused for. He discovered that the USA & a few European countries had been recycling and remanufacturing waste plastics into alternative timber products for many years, instead of throwing it all into landfill! Over time, slowly but surely he developed a few basic products in the form of planks and posts and very soon he began to receive interest from people wanting to know more about this revolutionary product that is both an environmentally friendly alternative to normal timber and sustainable which means it will save them a lot of money in the long term! From then on, the rest as they say is history. 176

WHAT CAN THE PLASTIC BE USED FOR?

The manufactured plastic has many practical and very useful properties. The main base of our products are in the form of planks and posts which can be used on their own for garden fences, both low for front gardens and high for side and back fences for instance, along road sides and around fields and paddocks just to name a few. It is also possible to produce a number of other products out of our plastic, such as picnic tables. These would vary in size, suitable for adults and children. Park benches, outdoor tables, square or rectangular plant boxes, decking and seating... the list is endless.

DOES IT NEED TO BE CLEANED? Products only need to be cleaned after a spillage. The collection of airborne dirt is inevitable and we would recommend a simple spray-down with a hose or wipe over with a damp cloth on a regular basis to ensure that your purchase is kept in the best condition

FINANCIAL BENEFITS

Achieving value for money is a key driver for any purchasing decision. Although some recycled products have greater up-front cost, their longevity and durability make them a more cost-effective option over the long term.

HOW STRONG IS IT?

It is extremely solid and strong being able to withstand stress levels of well over 10 tons. It is heavy, durable, virtually indestructible and will not need to be replaced. In short, it’s worry free.

// IT’S A GREAT INVESTMENT, AS IT NEVER NEEDS TO BE REPLACED DUE TO ITS HIGH STRENGTH AND DURABILITY.

\\

Remoulding the Past, Reshaping the Future, Rebuilding the Environment

IS THERE A COLOUR CHOICE?

Yes. Our main colours are black, brown and green. However, we can produce products to a choice of colours! This removed the need for painting & staining.

WHY ARE RECYCLED PLASTIC PRODUCTS DIFFERENT? • Does not rot • Will not need painting or staining • Is wear resistant • Resistant to vandalism • Resistant to salt water • Resistant to insects and bacteria 177

NICHOLAS JAMES UNAFRAID TO PIONEER NEW STYLES AND CHAMPION TRUE CRAFTSMANSHIP, NICHOLAS JAMES IS AN EXEMPLARY CONTEMPORARY JEWELLER, BORN OF A LIFELONG PASSION FOR DIAMONDS.

Brought up in a culture of fine jewellery, Nick Fitch followed in his father’s illustrious footsteps and soon made a name for himself with his natural talent for design and innovation. After qualifying as a gemmologist, Nick founded the Nicholas James brand, supplying his collection of strikingly contemporary pieces to over 70 independent stores. By the time he opened his first store in 1999, Nick was a highly respected designer, winning ‘Best Design in Diamonds’ at the UK Jewellery Awards. Nicholas James’ first showroom soon attracted a glittering following and by 2005 Nick had expanded into his current showroom in Hatton Garden. With luxurious styling and art-gallery displays, the new store broke every design convention and was rewarded with the prestigious accolade ‘Best Shop Design’ at the Retail Interior Design Awards 2005. More awards followed and in 2009 Nicholas James was announced ‘Independent Retailer of the

Year’ at the UK Jewellery Awards. In 2010 and 2012 Nick was selected as one of the industry’s ‘Hot 100’ movers and shakers by Professional Jeweller Magazine. For the past three years Nick has lent his considerable expertise as a judge to the Lonmin Design Innovation Awards. Nick also continues to contribute to the selection of the Jewellery Designer of the Year at the UK Jewellery Awards. Unafraid to push boundaries or tackle new challenges, Nick’s recent projects include customizing a titanium bicycle with diamonds and gold trim; producing a platinum and diamond pin to celebrate Battersea Dogs & Cats Home’s 150th anniversary; working on an exclusive range of interior accessories in conjunction with Arthur Price of England for Harrods; creating a provocative men’s sovereign ring range inspired by Jack the Ripper; a ladies half sovereign ring to commemorate the centenary of the

Titanic’s maiden voyage; as well as a collaboration with leather specialist Harcourt to create the unique ‘Brogue’ city bike. And the reason behind these many diverse and unusual projects? Nick explains; “After 20 years in the trade and reaching certain professional goals it has been extremely important not to stagnate, and to flex the grey matter. It reinvigorates by taking you out of your comfort zone and brings you back to the day job better, more focused with creative juices flowing.” One of the benefits of pushing the boundaries has been to win some daring, new customers who are more willing to participate in the design journey as opposed to the usual sense of conservatism often associated with bespoke jewellery. So what next for the Nicholas James brand? Plans include an exciting collaboration with a shoe designer, a new men’s range and a baby celebration ring collection… watch this space!

ULTIMATE GENTLEMAN’S CITY BIKE Specialist leather design and interiors company, Harcourt, and Award winning contemporary jeweller, Nicholas James, have joined forces to show their love for all things two wheeled with an exciting new partnership. The result of this unlikely collaboration is the ‘Brogue’; an immaculate, hand-stitched leather-clad 1970’s Triumph 531 frame, complete with matching saddle bag and individually woven leather handlebar grips. The handlebar ends are cast in sterling silver and finished with a rim of chocolate brown diamonds that perfectly complement the rich luster of the laser cut Italian vegetable-tanned leather. The saddle bag too features a contemporary reinterpretation of a traditional Conway buckle also cast in Sterling silver. Nick Fitch, designer and founder, of Nicholas James, adds; “Simon and I are both maniacal when it comes to getting things right. This has been a great opportunity to marry our two arts together. I love the contrast been the materials; the warm supple leather and the metal and diamonds. The finish is immensely tactile.”

LAFARRARI MODERN MASTERPIECE LUXURY WATCHMAKER HUBLOT HAS DESIGNED A UNIQUE MASTERPIECE IN TIME KEEPING, ‘LAFERRARI’ REPRESENTS A VERY SPECIAL SERIES, ENTIRELY DESIGNED AND DEVELOPED BY THE HUBLOT ENGINEERS AND WATCHMAKERS IN TRIBUTE TO THE SUPERCAR. In a testimony that lives up to the Italian car maker, it has achieved a historic record with its 50-day power reserve. It is also the watch with the most watchmaking components created to date by Hublot (637). The watch and the car: The MP-05 “LaFerrari” was developed - in technical and design terms - entirely in parallel with the car, alongside the Ferrari teams. They share a number of common points. Able to boast no fewer than 637 components for the 188

movement, which is also equipped with a Tourbillon, as well as a power reserve of approximately 50 days thanks to its 11 barrels, arranged in a line just like a spinal column and interconnected so that they do not each discharge in turn but support each other, this watch is closer to being a concept watch.

The hour and minute are displayed to the right of the barrels, also indicated by means of one anodised black aluminium cylinder each. On their left is the cylinder indicating the power reserve. Reinforcing bars either side, made from anodised red aluminium, bring to mind Ferrari’s red signature.

The watch is finely wrought in terms of shape, featuring a complex shaped sapphire crystal clearly reminiscent of the car’s outline, as well as an open case-back, and is made from black PVD titanium. It is topped by a titanium and carbon insert in its centre, revealing the winding crown. The timesetting crown is positioned under the case. Both are completely integrated into the design, and therefore practically invisible.

A small detail, but one which makes reading the time easier; on each cylinder the size of the numerals has been maximised with white SuperLuminovaTM, to enhance the display for ease of reading. This is all rounded off by a rubber strap with a special folding buckle in black PVD titanium.

The movement has an original display, featuring first off on the front vertical face the small seconds indicated by means of an aluminium cylinder fastened onto the suspended Tourbillon cage (significantly bigger than usual with a cage diameter of 14.50 mm, for even better appreciation of the mechanical parts).

The desire for a truly exceptional watch has been extended to the design of the presentation case, made from schedoni leather and carbon fibre, containing the specific tools for winding the watch, and whose design was also inspired by the world of motoring. The watch is limited to 50 numbered pieces so act fast.

// THE GARDEN HAS BECOME VERY MUCH AN EXTENSION OF OUR HOMES AND SHOULD WORK AS ANOTHER ROOM – JUST OUTSIDE.

\\

DESIGNED FOR OUTDOOR LIVING HOT MAGAZINE MEETS JOHN KING, FROM OUTDOOR LIVING SPECIALIST KINGSPACE.

Britons spend over £5 billion a year on their gardens, yet very few maximise on the benefits of outdoor living during the winter months, according to John King, owner of Kingspace in Bournemouth. “As a nation we have long aspired to the outdoor ‘cafe culture’ life of our European cousins blessed with warmer climates and while we don’t have yearround sunshine in this country, there’s certainly no need for us to stay inside,” he says. Not when you could be sat by an open fire, in the open air. Nor when you could be warm and cosy inside a glass room; the great outdoors outside brought inside. Or indeed when you could be submerged in warm, bubbling water with just the sight of your breath telling you it’s chillier than you think. “The garden has become very much an extension of our homes and should work as another room – just outside,” says John. “People spend a great deal of time making it look good which makes it even more important to be able to enjoy it all year round.” John worked in the building trade for many years before taking a late career break to study. It was while he was an architecture student at London’s Metropolitan University that he became fascinated by year-round outdoor living, which at the time was largely enjoyed overseas. 190

Part of John’s philosophy is to try to introduce people to new and exciting products you don’t find at your typical garden centres “Our Kingspace Barbecue Lodge is a prime example” he says “These superb structures originating from Lapland offer you a cosy space for shelter and cooking; they’ve been extremely popular since we introduced them and are perfect for both the British love of the barbecue and the inconsistencies of the Great British Summer!”. He set up Kingspace 3 years ago and even in that relatively short space of time the company has grown hugely. Part of its success is due to John’s passion for being the first to offer innovative, luxury outdoor products from abroad. The Canadian cedar hot tub is one such product. Encased in its own beautifully-crafted wooden summerhouse surround, the hot tub can be sunken into the ground. Glass of bubbly in hand you step up into the tub and sink into, yes, more bubbles. You don’t need the protection of a summerhouse says John. “Immerse yourself in the warm water of a spa, steaming in the crisp evening air and all the day’s stresses and strains will melt away,” he says. “Our swim spas allow outdoor swimming against a current, with the water heated to a bath-like temperature - warmer than most indoor pools.”

An outdoor space or garden can be completely transformed using artificial lawns. “People are getting ever busier in this day and age and don’t have the time to maintain a beautiful lawn all year round,” says John. “Artificial lawn technology has come on in leaps and bounds over the past few years and a lot of visitors to our Longham showroom don’t even realise they’re walking on an artificial product. It really does have the Grand Designs effect when we lay one of our lawns, bringing out the beautiful features around the garden.” And for those who enjoy cooking in the great outdoors, Kingspace’s wide range of outdoor kitchens includes electric rotisseries, fridges, hobs and sinks, with units available in a wide choice of colours and finishes. Your ‘extra room’ could be a room too of course – a glass room. Conservatories are one thing, but Kingspace ‘rooms’ can be created entirely from glass, with sides that fold back on sunny days. “Outdoor living is enjoying a popularity explosion,” says John. “Families are still embracing the whole ‘don’t move, improve’ phenomenon of recent years and the garden is often at the top of the list. Touches of luxury are highly sought-after and it’s easy to understand why. People work hard – and when they finally get home, they want to unwind, feel pampered and enjoy their living space to the full.”
