JOIN THE GEEKS FOR A WEEK! Autumn term and back at school? Do you want to put your knowledge of IT to the test and learn more? Rejuvenate IT have the answers. From 3rd November throughout the year the company is offering courses aimed at 14-17 year olds, delivered in their busy office space at Castle Parade in Christchurch. Aimed at appealing to young people with a flair for IT, these courses are a unique way of learning more about your chosen career path in a busy office environment. Each course accommodates a maximum of six students at any one time and the emphasis is geared to ensuring that individuals gain an in-depth and comprehensive appreciation of the IT industry over a one week period, 6pm – 9pm Monday to Friday. It is an ideal platform to kick start a career in this field and provides everything from computing basics to advanced level with a bespoke syllabus tailored to you. Students can enrich their CV, engage with people who really love what they do and receive a certificate on completion of the course. The week long course costs just £225 and includes 15 hours of tuition and experience. Nothing boring and not sitting in a room above an office but actually participating in a professional, environment learning, watching and appreciating how it all works. The busy help desk which is open to ‘walk ins’ every evening is yet another area where you will gain hands on experience with a chance to deal with the general public and help sort their problems under the able guidance of a computer geek! And that’s not just a survey statistic. The average internet user spends 88% more time on websites that feature videos. Sites with video gain two to three times more monthly visitors.

Search engines too, are ‘hardwired’, through the algorithms that govern their rankings, to respond to video. Having video on the landing page of your website can double its chances of appearing on the first page of Google and video anywhere on your website can increase search engine traffic by 150%.

DIARY OF A LETTING AGENT Sharon Canning Move on Rentals October has shaped out to be yet another very busy month. When I looked at the stats for last year, October 2013 we broke all records in our 9 years of business and we have matched the same amount of tenants moving in to properties again. This will no doubt add to April 2015 being busy with either renewing tenancies or reletting the properties again. We generally see a slowdown heading towards Christmas as most people are not particularly keen on moving in December. At Move On we have never had tenancies expire in December as we know how hard it can be to find a tenant at this time of year and then this leaves the landlord with no income until most probably end of January which is not only bad on the monetary side of things but certainly not very healthy for the property to be empty over a cold winter period. Also, a property that is empty for more than 30 days can void the buildings insurance, so again not ideal. I do not know why more letting agents don’t do this, it could be because being a landlord personally, I experienced it many years ago, and vowed I would not allow my clients to go through the same. We did have a couple of landlords approach us to find tenants at the beginning of December last year, the lettings department were able to fully devote their time and energy and came up with some very innovative ideas to attract tenants and successfully let the properties. It is also that time of year, where the maintenance department starts to get busy. This week we had a call from a tenant to say they had tried to put the heating on but it wasn’t working. The team asked the tenant if they had checked to see if the thermostat was turned up (a common occurrence) and indeed it was on zero – once turned up the heating then came on, a happy tenant and a cost saving to the landlord as it avoided a call out to the engineer. We are also getting ready to send out our winter packs to the tenants, part of this pack is educating tenants on the importance of airing the property. The last few years, our winters have been particularly wet and this has resulted in condensation building up in the properties due to windows not being opened. It is about educating the tenant and explaining if they are cooking, showering, bathing and drying clothes and not opening windows, then the moisture must go somewhere and that is the walls which will result in black mould. (nine times out of 10 the black mould is caused by condensation and not damp as they almost always believe it is) So, although we are entering a quieter time on the lettings side, the team are still busy with the day to day running of the management of the properties and most definitely busier on the maintenance side of things.

MOTORING

ALL-NEW MAZDA2 Set for sale in the Uk from early next year, the all-new Mazda2. Under the bonnet is one of four engines including the SKYACTIV-D 1.5-litre, a brand-new low compression clean diesel producing 105hp and CO2 emissions of 89g/km. The car will also be offered with the petrol-powered SKYACTIV-G 1.5-litre in three variants producing between 75hp and 115hp. Power is transferred to the front wheels via five- and six-speed SKYACTIV-MT manual transmissions as well as a six-speed SKYACTIV-Drive automatic. All are newly developed compact, lightweight versions of the gearboxes offered on other new-generation Mazdas. Prices of the new model range have not yet been announced.

VAUXHALL WARRANTY REVISED Vauxhall has announced the end of its Lifetime Warranty programme. From January 2015, all Vauxhall cars and vans will carry a 3 year/60,000 mile warranty with extra cost options for extending the warranty. Tim Tozer, Vauxhall’s Chairman and Managing Director cites the changing ownership patterns of new car buyers where 65% of retail sales are supported by a finance package and personal contract purchases. This has resulted in fewer customers retaining their cars beyond three years. Existing vehicles with Lifetime Warranty will continue to be covered for up to 100,000 miles whilst the vehicle remains with the first owner,

subject to annual validation. The new 3 year/60,000 mile transferable warranty includes AA roadside assistance (with Homestart and full European cover) in the first year and is available with extra cost options to extend up to 4 and 5 years. The demise of Vauxhall’s 100,000-mile ‘lifetime’ new car warranty could provoke a ‘domino effect’, prompting other manufacturers to turn their back on lifetime warranty schemes. Several manufacturers currently provide protection beyond the traditional threeyear warranty period. Warranty Direct, an extended warranty company, has previously questioned the quality of cover provided directly by manufacturers for cars over three-years old, saying how protection quickly tapers off and small print loopholes render policies useless as mileage and age increase.


Renault & Dacia Sales Boost Renault enjoyed increased sales in September with their Clio hatchback, Captur crossover and ZOE electric vehicles leading the way. Overall sales were up over 43 per cent with 12,993 vehicles sold in the month, significantly outpacing the UK car market which was up 5.6 per cent. According to official figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), Renault’s market share for the month is up 0.8 points on 2013 to 3.1 per cent. Year-to-date market share for the French car brand stands at 2.6 per cent with sales of 50,732 vehicles. Renault van sales were also up with 2,596 sales in the month of September - up 39.1 per cent on 2013 and representing a market share of 5.2 per cent. The Renault Group, which comprises Renault cars, vans and bargain brand Dacia, saw its 17th consecutive month of outpacing the growth of the UK market in last month with a total of 19,112 vehicles sold.

Amongst those favored topping combinations, the classics like ham and mushroom, chicken and BBQ sauce, and a trio of cheeses, Le Bateau have taken just a few steps outside of the box. Duck on a pizza, yes! China meets Italy and they have fallen in love. Shredded duck generously drizzled with hoisin sauce and thinly sliced cucumber and spring onion is the filling you would notably find in a Chinese pancake. At Le Bateau you can find it on a pizza. All weather warmer pulled pork with apple sauce, is no longer saved for hog roasts. Dorset has its own pizza delight. These are just a few of the more unusual pizza toppings that Le Bateau is serving up. House got stuck in and tried multiple toppings. A particularly loved topping was ‘Rosary Goats Cheese’. If you like goat’s cheese, then I cannot put this any other way than experiencing goat’s cheese heaven. Sweet caramelized red onions classically paired with goat’s cheese just got taken up a notch with the addition of roasted sweet potatoes and sun blushed tomatoes.

What I loved about the classes was everyone was so friendly, Charlie and Mike who take the classes were very supportive and made it fun by throwing in some Thai Boxing exercises that have not only toned my legs and bum but also taught me some helpful self defence techniques, I couldn’t be happier with the result which took about 7 weeks!

You really do only get out what you’re prepared to put in, but to have people there to motivate you towards your goal makes all the difference. In the first six months Fitter Than Fit helped me lose well over a stone in body fat. No two sessions have ever been the same. It’s hard work, with a firm but fair mentality, but you will not find a more engaging, enjoyable and rewarding way to exercise. It’s changed something I used to dread into something I can’t wait for.

I am more confident, have more energy and feel great.
