LANGSIDE SCHOOL DESIGN CHARITY CHRISTMAS CARDS TO RAISE FUNDS Pupils from Langside, a special school for children aged two to 19 with profound disabilities run by Diverse Abilities, have designed a range of Christmas cards to help raise funds for the charity that provides a lifetime of support to children and adults with disabilities in Dorset. James, Amelia, Gabby, Angel, Alicia and Isaac all enjoyed designing the cards while listening to Christmas music. The children also received help from their teachers while using their fingers and toes to create their master pieces. Each pack contains 12 cards and includes two of each design in every pack. They are priced at £4 for one pack or three packs for £10. International Cards & Gifts (ICG), in Ferndown, very kindly printed the cards for the charity

at no cost; therefore all profits will go direct to the Diverse Abilities. Simon Wagstaff, owner of ICG, said: “Diverse Abilities is a fantastic local charity. LOCAL SOLAR ENERGY INSTALLER PUTS DORSET FIRMLY ON RENEWABLE ENERGY MAP WITH PRESTIGIOUS AWARD The ‘Renewable Energy Advocate Award’ puts Dorset firmly on the map for quality solar installation. Nominated by leading industry solar inverter manufacturer, Enphase Energy UK, NGPS Limited of Poole in Dorset picked up the award for the South and South West at a prestigious event held at Birmingham’s NEC Arena. The event was organized by one of the UKs most influential solar energy magazines, Solar Power Portal, and the awards ceremony was a celebration of the UK solar industry during their Solar Energy UK Exhibition at Birmingham’s NEC. Enphase Energy UK pioneered a breakthrough in solar inverter technology with the introduction of the micro inverter. This meant an entire solar panel system would no longer be controlled by just one inverter, as each panel is able to host its own and be controlled individually. This has enabled a large degree of flexibility for shaded or dust prone roofs as the entire system is not compromised. The technology also enables the option of a split roof installation in the case of smaller roofs, and energy production is greatly enhanced as the panels can begin generating earlier in the day than a traditional system, and later into the evening. NGPS is one of the largest installers of Enphase micro inverters in the South West and now installs the product as standard on their solar photovoltaic systems. Enphase also adds the benefit of a 25 year warranty and enables even more homeowners to benefit from solar energy. It most certainly means better performance so our customer can reap a greater return on their investment and an even faster payback. And a happy customer makes the job even more rewarding for us as a business.”

Dawsons will be helping turn up the volume at the Goldsands Stadium after becoming sponsors of AFC Bournemouth’s Bubbles Champagne Lounge. All too often, the style of this room is an after thought and it ends up with play safe but dull decor, and a selection of mismatched furniture. “To create a fashionable feel similar to a 5-star hotel, ensure the bed is as large and comfortable as possible, and complement with two bedside tables and a mirror. Last but not least, have sufficient lighting - a table and a floor lamp will give guests a choice of ambience they wish to create - task lighting or soft, overall lighting. Give a priority to the room just as you would to your visitors.”

Fitted furniture solutions and space saving pieces can make all the difference. “In many households, the spare room needs to serve as a multifunctional space,” says Claire Hornby. “If space is limited, consider a sofa bed, so you retain maximum floor space during the day. Flexible storage, if you can’t afford fitted solutions, will help give the impression a room is larger, because clutter will be minimised and floor space maximised. “Storage trunks stacked in a corner look great, as do wire baskets, which are currently very on-trend. Drawers or boxes on wheels are also a wonderful option, as they can be moved around easily.”

TIP: Re-upholstering a headboard generally takes only a few metres of fabric, and sourcing it in remnant sales at a local haberdashery or department store can save money. Use a staple gun to fix. STYLISH SPARE: For a streamlined look, it’s hard to beat a fully-fitted room, which incorporates a foldaway bed. SEASONAL SETTING Red, traditionally the keynote colour for the season, is perhaps an over-bold choice for a bedroom, but perfect for an occasionally used spare room. This rich colour instantly has a cosseting, warm effect and adding luxury textures, like velvet and faux fur, will make it even more snugly. “A spare room should be a homely haven for guests, where they don’t just sleep but can also retreat and unwind occasionally - something which will

be especially welcome in a busy household at Christmas,” says Katie Watson, interior designer for furniture chain, Fishpools. “Splashes of deep colour always give a lift and if the room’s well equipped with ample free-standing furniture, it can be re-arranged to double as a restful homework/hobby area or den, for the whole family, once the festivities are over. “Essentials, space permitting, are a chest of drawers (the top surface can work as a dressing table), blanket box, bedside table and a wardrobe - or at least a hanging rail. FIVE RENOVATION MISTAKES YOU DON’T WANT TO MAKE 1. Don’t cut corners Don’t take on a big project unless you can afford to do it properly. If you’re going to spend money on building work, ensure you get the maximum benefit from it, both in terms of improving your home and adding value to it. With loft conversions, for example, incorporating a dormer window (planning laws permitting) will give you most head height and useable space in the loft room/s. Changing the line of the roof from sloping to ‘straight’ (looking from the front or back), with a dormer at the back spanning almost the whole width of the house, costs more but gives you the best possible loft room/s. Some homes have a converted loft that can’t officially be called a bedroom because it doesn’t comply with buildings regulations. If you can make your conversion comply, and get a completion certificate to prove it, it will be worth a lot more.

2. Don’t overspend Don’t overspend on your home, unless you’re not concerned about recouping the cost. It’s easy to splash out on expensive home improvements, but it’s wise to spend in proportion to the value of the

property and the area. Don’t, for example, pay £30,000 for a kitchen in a property that’s only worth about £150,000, as you’re unlikely to see that money back.

3. Don’t be too ruthless Don’t rip out original features. In decades past, beautiful period features weren’t always as valued as they are now, but original cornicing, floorboards, fireplaces, doors and the like add value and make your home more attractive and sellable. Features can often be restored if they’ve been removed, either original or reproduction ones - eBay’s a great place to find them.

4. Don’t be too different Don’t ignore what your neighbours have done. Not improving your home in line with the rest of the neighbourhood could cost you dear. Let’s take windows as an example: if all or most of your neighbours’ homes have the original wooden sash windows, replacing your windows with UPVC casement ones will probably devalue your home.

In some areas, UPVC windows are everywhere, so fitting them is more likely to add value than not.

5. Don’t ignore the rules Don’t forget to get permission. Planning permission is, of course, sometimes required for building work, but it’s not always obvious when you need planning and when you don’t - if in doubt, ask the local council. Flats and maisonettes don’t have permitted development (PD) rights, so if you live in one of these, you’ll need planning for things that you wouldn’t if you lived in a house, such as erecting a garden shed. Some houses have had their PD rights removed, so they have the same restrictions, and houses on ‘designated land’, which includes conservation areas, are subject to different planning rules to those that aren’t.If your home’s listed, alterations usually require listed building consent from the local council, or in some cases English Heritage. And if your home’s leasehold, you usually need the freeholder’s permission for alterations, depending on what the lease says. Even if you own a share of the freehold, you still need the other freeholders to agree.

DIARY OF A LETTING AGENT Sharon Canning Move on Rentals A piece of journalism caught my eye recently, with regards to buildings and contents insurance on a rented property which most landlords hope will never happen to them.

An additional and interesting twist to this case though, is that if they had taken out a policy that did cover them for any damage caused by a tenant, the probability of the insurer paying out would have been a nil again. This is because the landlords had not conducted a property visit in the 2.5 years they were abroad. So… the moral in this story is to check your policy and read the small print, make sure you are covered for malicious damage (as the majority of policies does not include this) and make sure you are conducting regular property inspections. I would also go one stage further and document all your visits with your findings (even if a good inspection with nothing to report) and ensure a written report has a paper trail (ie proof of postage, or proof of email) with a dated photograph of the property (be it the garden, kitchen or bathroom). I recently relayed this story to a client, who subsequently checked with his insurer and was told they were not covered for malicious damage. Forewarned is forearmed as they say and I do hope it never happens to you.

HOTEL DU VIN & BISTRO The Quay Thames Street Poole BH15 1JN

One rather wet afternoon House paid a visit to cobble paved Hotel du Vin. Stepping into the shelter you know you’ve walked in to a little slice of heaven. Soft velvets, rich burgundy walls, and hints of paisley make you feel instantly warm on arrival. If it were a Sunday I could have quiet happily cushioned myself into one of the many plush sofas, sipped a tea and watch the world go by. With winter nights upon us, all you need is a log fire brewing, a glass of red wine from the extensive wine collection and to perhaps sit yourself by the window so as to watch the raindrops slosh against the pane. When I state the extensive wine collection, I am by no means exaggerating. Playground to Head Sommelier Chad Christian, three floor-to-ceiling walls are doused in bottles of wine making up the Laroche Wine Tasting Room. During our lunch a few of us opted to try the house Merlot. Perhaps a safe option, in my opinion you tend to trust a house wine to be something you will enjoy, but you’re probably not going to be wowed by it. Contrary the Merlot was in fact delicious and complimentary to the Christmas meal that was to follow. The restaurant has lighter tones of mustard yellow rag washed across the walls and a plethora of framed pictures and canvases. Dimmed lighting illuminated by candles set a sultry mood, the perfect ambiance for a romantic occasion if you

wished. Encircling the whole room are empty wine bottles stacked like soldiers creating their own fortress. A picture of bottle beauty they are quite a feature. Mahogany chairs dressed in black leather sit around large tables adorned with candles and this season’s party menus. A gem on the table had to be ‘the little burgundy book’ filled with pages of info regarding the rest of the Hotel du Vin family. Maybe a little gimmicky, but I loved the spin off from the little black book. A running theme of burgundy surpasses to each menu tagged with the line make this Christmas really special. The staff were courteous and impeccably mannered. In fact they were faultless. Having been sat and enjoying our glass of Merlot, we feasted our eyes on the menu. Christmas has come early for House. For starter the winner of the menu had to go to the celeriac and wild mushroom soup drizzled with white truffle oil. Served in mini hot pot dishes, which really were rather cute, and topped with

sliced mushrooms, a pang of jealousy struck a few of us. Other choices were Christmas cured smoked salmon accompanied by pumpernickel and dill pickles, and both sales men of House chose ham hock terrine with piccalilli. With two rounds of sliced French stick dipped in olive oil and balsamic vinegar a few of us were filling up rather fast. Bread always catches you out. Since this is a Christmas meal half of us decided on the roast free-range turkey ballotine with all the traditional trimmings. Bread and cranberry sauce, one rather large pig in a blanket and of course the stuffing. Christmas dinner cannot be named as such without the stuffing. Ladled with gravy and a helping of seasonal veg roasted to perfection, mnnn is the only adjective that springs to mind. As a vegetarian option parsnip, cranberry and chestnut loaf was dished up. I decided that since this was a faux Christmas I would chance my luck and try out the loaf. Served in a shallow bowl I was a little skeptical that perhaps I had made the wrong decision. Especially after eying-up the turkey, but looks can be deceiving. It was delicious. Rich with flavor and jewel studded with cranberries. Yum yum. Beef bourguignon and pan fried Sea Bass were also available on the menu for those wanting to taster a less traditional Christmas perhaps.

Now for dessert. I am a dessert kind of girl, but I would imagine that even if your preference were more savory inclined you would still be praising the gingerbread ice cream. Deep in heat with spice and served as an accompaniment with mulled wine poached pear, I don’t think gingerbread ice cream could get any better than this. Of course one of us had to pick the classic Christmas pudding pooled with brandy sauce. Topped with a sprig of mint and redcurrants lightly dusted with icing sugar it looked the picture of Christmas. For those chocolate lovers, another traditional dessert, chocolate yule log. Glossy with a dark chocolate coating, this is not a dessert for the faint hearted. Since House were on a lunch break, we felt a little naughty stepping away from the office for quite so long, so we headed back to the office after finishing our dessert. However for those who have time on their hands you needn’t rush off. Tea, coffee and mince pies are next. I did spy some other diners tucking into star topped minced pies as we left, and although I was incredibly full, I wished I could stick around and indulge myself some more. If you’re looking for an intimate Christmas filled with warmth and a hint of spice then I highly recommend you book a table and treat you’re loved ones to a very special Christmas.

Hotel du Vin & Bistro Poole has a rather sad tale behind its doors, but one that gives life and meaning to this beautiful building. Prior to its opening as Hotel du Vin in 2008, this remarkable building was to be the ‘Mansion House’ of businessman Isaac Lester, an industrious but notoriously sharp businessman. Isaac delighted in forging his own home, employing craftsman Blandford and purchasing bricks in from Lymmington. Sorrowfully Isaac Lester was to pass away prior to the completion of his home and younger brother Benjamin Lester was left to finish Issacs dream home. Since the completion of the house it has been passed down through generations of the Lester family and onto the Garland family. It wasn’t until 1836 that John Bingley Garland sold the house. Having survived the Second World War the building landed in the hands of Robert & Val Leonard. The pair chose to turn the home into a hotel and dining club before Hotel du Vin purchased it in May 2007. Upon opening its doors guests must walk up the original stone stairs, which leads you into the entrance hall. A grand affair itself with its high ceilings unveiling a stunning contemporary chandelier made of wine glasses, and overhanging

balcony you get a sense of just how majestic and regal this building is. Before leading through into the lounge and bar area there is a rather dear room just down a few steps. A mention has to be given to this snug with its deep burgundy coloured sofas, low beams and soft lighting. Who wouldn’t want to take a little nap in this charming space? Hotel du Vin has adopted a wine theme as the French name suggests and dubbed each of the 38 bedrooms with the name of a wine. With regards to the seaside town the rooms have embraced a marine theme. Ultramarine, Persian blue and sand in the form of strips, velvets, silks and tassels make each room sympathetic to Poole. A multitude of bathrooms feature the signature roll top baths and vast wet rooms for your comfort. A rather nice touch is that Hotel du Vin offers their own bathroom products ‘Terre du Vin’ made exclusively by Miller Harris. If you are looking for the ultimate bathroom experience then the master suite rather aptly named ‘Dom Perignon’ has two plasma screens for you to sit and watch tv whilst bathing. I think perhaps during the winter months if Bridget Jones was on and I had a large glass of Sauvignon Blanc, I would choose never to leave the bath.

House is grinning from ear to ear. Yes just like the Cheshire cat, spoilt just became our middle name, we have just dined at Koh Boscombe. An orange and red hue floods Koh Thai’s Boscombe branch creating an instantly warm and cozy atmosphere. A step away from the buzz of their flagship branch in Bournemouth, Koh Boscombe offers their diners an escape from the crowds whilst still maintaining the same excellence of food and service. Large golden lamps hang from the ceiling, cushions embellished with embroidered elephants, and wooden carved figurines are all but a few things that create an authentic ambiance. Each Koh branch follows the same ethos, CDE - The Complete Dining Experience. This is everything from the tapas, and service to the lighting and soft furnishings, whilst retaining their own unique personality. Since Boscombe was the first little island of the Koh family, they have got this down to a T! Did I hear you say the word ‘cocktail’? Or better still ‘Kohtini’. I think most of our days just got that little bit brighter sipping on Kohs famous twist on the Cosmopolitan. I do like to think of myself as a bit of a Cosmo connoisseur, not that I can unfortunately say I have any mixology qualities, but let me tell you, I can spot the good from the very good. This one possibly tipped the scales on very very good. You get the gist of it. Go try it this once, you wont begrudge my forcefulness I promise. General Manager Jenny is simply a delight to chat with and will be more than happy to make sure her best bartender is on hand to tend to your every need. The Boscombe branch has undergone an expansion, and is now able to offer a private dining experience.

This Christmas will mark 5 years of business for Koh and will be there biggest yet. So with Christmas round the corner, for those larger parties such as corporate parties Boscombe can now easily accommodate. Your own bar complete with bartender can allow up to 16 guests to enjoy a cocktail without a spill from bumping with the crowd. When’s your next celebratory event? I am trying to think of an excuse as we speak to book out this charming area. Tapas. I can’t quite believe it has taken me this long to talk about the delicious Thai tapas, but make no mistake this is most certainly not because it’s the last thing on my mind. The food, well it quite frantically blew me away, literally when I tasted the ‘Koh Jungle’ curry. If you like spice, and the hotter the better then this is the curry for you. Koh’s hottest dish on the menu, close in conjunction with “Boozy Duck” you’re sure to be leaving with a dancing tongue. It was explained that “Boozy Duck” was aptly named due its ability to remedy a hangover. I rather liked this name. Having sat down it dawned on myself that we had a vegetarian amongst us. Jenny was fantastic at quickly accommodating, and our vegetarian needn’t know I had forgotten her. The options served up were corn cakes and vegetable spring rolls. As a meat eater myself I would not usually choose to pick a sweet corn cake, but each member of the House team commented on how much they enjoyed this corn fritter. An alternative perhaps for those who fancy a slightly lighter starter? House

did agree that a favorite amongst the mix had to go to the ‘Dim Sum’. A Thai delicacy, that caused just slight controversy when the last one was left on the plate. “Don’t worry you can have the last one” was not a line to be heard on this table. Other favorites included ‘Prawn Tempura’, and ‘Thai Grilled Pork’, and these were just the starters. Be warned House has learnt the hard way. Pace yourself. It is too easy to get carried away with the starters and forget that another course is still to come. A course that is equally as good, and you are going to want to eat ever last mouthful, so save some room. The most popular dish on the Koh menu is the Pad Thai. We know why now. I can’t tell you what ingredient it is that makes this dish so addictive, but like Pringles, you cant stop going back for more. It is quite frankly delicious. If you enjoy lamb then a must is the ‘Massamann Lamb’ curry. New potatoes, peanuts and slow cooked pieces of lamb’s leg, my pupils are dilating. ‘Green Thai’ curry is always a favorite dish and Koh’s had a little but firm kick to it. If your wanting to taste a few of the dishes and are uncertain of what you wish to pick then you can always opt to try the £20 per head or £25 per head menu, which is exactly what we did. Large floor to ceiling windows conceal the front of Koh Boscombe creating the perfect atmosphere for live music. An invitation without the paper to come inside and enjoy our live lounge twice a week. So if you’re taking a seat and sipping a cocktail, you might as well enjoy a little tapas.

RANCHO STEAK HOUSE 15 – 17 Poole Hill Bournemouth BH2 5PW

House has discovered a delight on Poole Hill. Rancho Steak House I’d say is a diamond in the rough. With its pumpkin orange awnings, and statement logo of a bull’s head, you know your not walking in for a light salad. As you can imagine every man here at House was salivating just at the thought of what was to come. The interior is a representation of what it says on the tin, it has a ranch feel about it. All be it a rather plush ranch. Earthy browns, taupe and burnt orange set the tone, with soft leathers, cow skins and various cowboy related apparel adorn the walls. Pillars of canary yellow much like beams of sunshine brings warmth no other colour can quite match. A particular love for House was discovering that ‘Rancho’ has Rekorderlig on tap. For those of you who may perhaps be unaware of this delicious thirst quencher, it is a fruit cider in its simplest form. To find this on tap, well it’s like detecting gold. With Rekorderlig and rather appropriately named ‘Spitfire’ ales slipping down our throats rather too easily for a Tuesday lunchtime, starters began to fill the table. Chilli squid, BBQ ribs, Pork Chorizo and Nachos with what I might call blow your head off red sauce were placed in front of us ready to be… photographed. Possibly some of the most painful few seconds of each House member’s life, as soon as

the camera was put down, it all went in a flash. The chilli squid was pleasantly not to spicy and lightly battered providing that perfect crispy skin. A definite favourite had to be the sticky BBQ ribs coated in a costa picante glaze, succulent ribs slathered in a spiking hot homemade sauce. The steak - House can unanimously state that the steak served up at Rancho is perhaps the best steak any of us have ever had the pleasure of tasting. Imported from Australia, most of us opted for a fillet cooked in the medium – medium rare region. Perfectly tender and juicy your knife just glides through the meat and melts in your mouth. The table went completely silent for a good 5 minutes. Other choices included rump steak, and the chefs special steak known as ‘Lomo de Churrasco’. An incredibly tender piece of meat marinated in a traditional rub of garlic and parsley. A slightly more unusual side of garlic chips was ordered to accompany each of our chosen steaks. Rather than the tradition rectangular cut of a chip these were rounded discs cooked with sliced garlic that had become golden in colour under the heat. For our vegetarian we were a little sympathetic prior to our trip to Rancho, but we need not have been. The vegetable fajitas came out sizzling on a hot grill and every one of us turned and doubted our meat decisions for a moment. One thing to keep in mind when visiting Rancho steak house is to take your

MERCEDES AMG GT DEBUT

APPLE AWARD FOR MITSUBISHI Mitsubishi’s big but frugal Outlander PHEV has taken top spot in a set of awards for cars that mix modest thirst and emissions with the ability to entertain their drivers and keep running costs down in the real world. The Green Apple Awards organised The Green Organisation - and were judged by members of the Midland Group of Motoring Journalists. Midland Group chairman Ian Donaldson said: “When The Green Organisation asked us for our current green champions we wanted to go further than some other awards and look beyond the official figures and rank our favourites in the real world, taking into account how they performed in our hands.” One judge said of the Outlander PHEV: “Many car firms have claimed to have introduced a ground breaker in the past 12 months but this one really is. It embraces everything thatís good about new technology without compromise and has the potential to save you a small fortune. Mitsubishiís decision to price it the same as diesel is the real clincher.” Second place overall went to the diesel engined Honda Civic, which judges said astonished them with its real world economy. Category winners: supermini: Skoda Citigo; smaller family car: Honda Civic diesel; larger family car, Peugeot 308; smaller SUVs, Nissan Qashqai; electric and/or hybrids, Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV; executive car, Audi A6.

The all-new 193 mph Mercedes-AMG GT has opened for ordering in the UK – with prices starting at £97,195. The first models set to arrive in the UK in April will be the GT S and GT S Edition 1 variants – powered by an all-new 4.0-litre biturbo V8 engine developing 510 hp. This gives the car a 0-60 mph in 3.8 seconds and a top speed of 193 mph. The GT – set to arrive in the UK in late 2015 – uses the same dry sump V8, albeit in 462 hp guise – developed at 6,000 rpm. This version has a 0-60 mph time of 4.0 seconds before reaching 189 mph. Every GT will feature 19 inch wheels (front and rear),a mechanical limited slip differential, a switchable AMG performance exhaust, COMAND Online

(complete with an 8.4-inch screen), AMG sports suspension and an adjustable electronic rear wing. The GT S adds 20 inch rear wheels, red brake callipers clamping enlarged discs, an electronically-controlled rear differential, AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension with three selectable modes and an increase in power from 462 hp to 510 hp. The GT S Edition 1 brings with it even greater visual presence – from the fixed rear wing and accompanying deep front splitter extending up to the airdams, just ahead of aerodynamic flicks on the front wings. High-gloss silver and black 19 inch (front) and 20 inch (rear) wheels, a carbon roof, a set of black mirror surrounds with matching window surrounds and rear

diffuser and black exhaust tips complete the enhancements. Inside, there are 14 leather and five centre console colour combinations and finishes to choose from – as well as two different styles of seats, from the AMG sport seats to the more trackorientated AMG performance seats (£1,895 - standard on the GT S Edition1). For those intending to take their GT on track, there’s the option of an AMG high-performance ceramic composite braking system – £5,995 – providing even greater stopping power than the AMG high-performance steel composite brake system which is fitted as standard. Mercedes says the GT can “strike a balance between being driven hard, and being viable for everyday use.”

ALL NEW CITY CAR FROM SUZUKI Suzuki’s all new global compact City car - the Celerio - will go on sale in the UK from February. Prices have not yet been announced. The new model has class-leading boot space - 245 litres - and provides an elevated driving position. A height of 1,530mm and a nonslanting roofline allows greater headroom for occupants. The 2,425mm long wheelbase provides plenty of space in the cabin for five occupants. Standard specification for the range include six airbags, air conditioning, alloy wheels, DAB Radio, CD Tuner, USB and Bluetooth connectivity. Celerio offers low CO2 emissions of 99g/km and fuel consumption of 65.7mpg combined. In the Summer of 2015 a new engine will be available offering even higher fuel economy and CO2 emissions that fall to just 84g/km

thanks to the introduction of Suzuki’s new Dualjet engine technology. Also available in the summer will be Suzuki’s newly developed Auto Gear Shift. This system features an Intelligent Shift Control Actuator positioned at the top of the transmission that operates the gearshift and clutch automatically. Says Suzuki: “With AGS, the driver can enjoy the effortless driving of an automatic,

particularly in City traffic, but without any loss in fuel efficiency or increase in CO2 emissions that would normally be the case with a conventional torque converter equipped automatic transmission.” A unique feature of the Suzuki AGS is a low speed ‘creep’ facility which allows the car to move in gear without the accelerator being applied, ideal in slow traffic and when parking.

Following Jenkins & Sons rebrand as part of umbrella company ‘Urban Guild’, a treasure trail of pineapples has been set loose. Urban Guild explains; “Legend has it that upon return from global travels the Captain of the ship would stake a pineapple to his door or fence post outside his house. This would symbolise to friends and locals that his doors were open to enjoy fine food and booze from around the globe, to celebrate his return and to share stories of his travels. Over the years pineapples have been carved into wood, stone, bedsteads and on signs outside inns and homes, in each case to symbolise warm welcomes and great hospitality.” Jenkins & Sons brings the story to life, providing a cozy ambiance to curl up away from the elements and enjoy their classics. Beer battered hake fillet and Jenkins & Sons burger accompanied by oozing Somerset brie and fat chips are just a few of the favourites. The mention of fat chips was by far not an understatement. These chips were the crème de la crème of fat chips, if there ever was one. Twice baked, crispy on the outside and fluffy in the middle. I dare say you can’t get much more from a chip. Jenkins & Sons have sought carefully to create an environment that is warm and desirable to sit within. A homely feeling is how I would best describe it. Small nic-nacs are displayed on the

shelves amongst aged books and fading candles. A rather charming part of the experience of dining at Jenkins & Sons is the seating itself. Rustic beams bound to each other’s sides make each table unique. All components have no distinctive purpose but matter, united to create an intimate space. Renowned for their ‘Josper Grilled’ aged steaks, House must praise Jenkins & Sons, as they certainly lived up to expectations. For those of you who might be drawing a blank, let me enlighten you. Your steak is placed in a box and then cooked at an extremely high temperature over charcoal only. Essentially recreating a BBQ, but in a box, minus the gas. Why, because this seals the juices into the meat, creating a tender juicy steak for your eating pleasure. Fit for a king! If you would like to indulge in a starter, main and dessert for lunch, then you most certainly can. House treated ourselves to the twice baked goats cheese soufflé, accompanied by candied walnuts, celery, apples and grape salad, it was quite the perfect picture on a plate. Beautifully executed, this dish had been handled with care by its artist. Similarly with a light touch I opted for a smoked

salmon salad for main course. Served with gaufrette potato mille feuille I was rather unsure of what I had ordered. When the dish arrived to the table everybody’s head turned. Thin slices of potato crisps layered with asparagus and smoked salmon pilled high on top of each other resembled the leaning tower of Pisa. A work of art. For those just popping in to Jenkins & Sons to simply relax, sip a coffee or taste the countless variety of ales, you might fancy a slice of cake to go with that. Kay gets up every day at 5am to bake fresh cakes ready for the day. You did hear that correctly, every day, fresh. Getting excited? Go go go… cake is calling your name. So if you fancy hunting pineapples you know where to start, but better still take a companion and enjoy a tempting sharing platter for two.
